What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

Linen Capsule Wardrobe

To know what a Summer travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe actually is!

Generally speaking a travel capsule wardrobe is a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists , and thus preventing you from overpacking .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Now depending on the length of your travels or vacation, the time of year you are traveling and the destination will depend on how many items should be included in your capsule wardrobe. However in my opinion the less the better. But be sure to pack enough so you don’t have to do laundry or buy new items at your destination.

Some ways we create out capsule wardrobes are using the following packing methods:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method)
  • . 4 x 4 packing method

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

So now you know what a travel capsule wardrobe is we will look at capsule wardrobe for Summer in particular.

Our Summer packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Summer months of June, July and August in the Northern Hemisphere such as in Europe, Asia and of course the USA and Canada.

Note : if you are travelling to the Southern Hemisphere Spring is categorised as December, January and February.

And if you are traveling at another time of year of for a specific type of vacation be sure to check out our other capsule wardrobe packing lists for more specific guidance:

  • Beach Vacation Capsule Wardrobe
  • Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • River Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • Safari Capsule Wardrobe.

So now you know what a Summer travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

WomAN in hat and red dress overlooking coatst in Calabria Italy

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe I always start making my wardrobe in the same way using a couple of considerations these are:

Color palettes

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits for a true minimalist closet.

Now obviously monochrome is the easiest capsule wardrobe to make as you are so limited in colors. However I find this makes my vacation photos look a bit boring, especially for vibrant summer destinations and beach destinations.

When I put together my own Summer capsule wardrobe I always gravitate towards bright colors, pastels and florals. My favorite color palettes for a Summer capsule wardrobe are:

But this is very much a personal choice and you should pick a color palette that you feel comfortable in.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times. This is why I like the sudoku method as it is the easiest method of laying out outfits.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Summer capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Summer weather. For this reason waterproof wear is not a top priority for this list. However, a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

And if you are looking for other seasonal capsule wardrobes these posts may be of interest:

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. To check your destination and time of travel head to the search function on the top of this page and type your destination and month of travel (i.e. Venice August or Italy July ). This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a Summer travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include no matter the destination:

Best Pants for your Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

The essentials on your summer capsule list are:

Linen Trousers / Linen pants

heipeiwa Women's Linen Summer Casual High Waist Wide Leg Dressy Pants Flowy Trousers

Linen trousers are a great pick for Summer no matter where you are traveling to. We like to pick linen pants in a neutral color such as cream, beige or white as they work well no matter the color you pick for your capsule wardrobe.

Dress / Skirt

Amazon Essentials Women's Short-Sleeve Maxi Dress, Black, X-Large

As you transition from your Spring capsule wardrobe into your Summer one, you will want to change the skirts and dresses you wear. Personally I like a Maxi Dress or Skirt or midi one as I find they work no matter where you are., These work even if you plan on visiting religious sites such as churches or mosques .

I also like that these are great day to night transition pieces with a little dressing up with jewelry and pashminas.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only. They also work well for nights out where you want smarter trousers.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Nautica Women's Comfort Tailored Stretch Cotton Solid and Novelty Short, Navy, 12

Although not for every destination, when we are visiting summer destinations with beaches, or outdoor activities as opposed to cities I always pack shorts.

I tend to pack smarter more tailored shorts such as chino shorts instead of short shorts or denim shorts as these work in more settings.

Best Tops for Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your Summer travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

Amazon Essentials Women's Classic-Fit Short-Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt, Pack of 2, Bright Pink/White, Large

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain white tee.

For Summer I tend to pack more short sleeve t shirts as opposed to long sleeve ones.

Click here to shop basic tee shirts.

Note : For Europe in Summer I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your Summer outfit combos. But also they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Also for cities rather than beach destinations, I tend to avoid tank tops because at some cultural institutions these are not appropriate.

Blouse / Shirt

Runcati Womens Button Down Shirt Cotton Linen Long Sleeve V Neck Dress Shirts Casual Loose Roll Up Work Blouse Tops with Pockets White

A shirt or blouse is a great addition to a summer capsule wardobe. Again I stick with tops in natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to reduce sweat.

Personally I love a floral blouse but also think you can never go wrong with an oversized linen shirt. And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

Click here to shop printed and patterned blouses.

Best Layers for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel even in Summer. Now depending on the location will depend on the thickness you need.

However, generally speaking I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel which in Summer usually consists of:

Lueluoye Chunky Crochet Cardigan for Women Long Sleeve Waterfall Open Front Knit Cardigans Sweaters White XXL

A cardigan is essential for this time of year as it can be layered on top of blouses, tops, t shirts and dresses whether you need an extra layer during the daytime, or want to use it to dress up your evening attire.

You can choose the color based on the palette you have in your wardrobe.

Click here to shop cardigans for Spring.

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Long-Sleeve V-Neck Tunic Sweater (Available in Plus Size), Pink, Large

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

Best Jackets for Summer Travel (Optional)

Waterproof jacket.

LOMON Women Waterproof Lightweight Rain Jacket Active Outdoor Hooded Raincoat (M, Black1)

Depending on where you are going will depend on whether you need a pack-away rain jacket. For instance I would never travel to the Fjords in Norway without one, however in Spain in summer I would definitely leave this off my packing list.

Click here to shop jackets for travel.

Shoes for Summer Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack . However, for Summer I recommend packing just two pairs of shoes. They are:

adidas Women's Advantage Cloudfoam Sneaker, Cloud White-violet Fusion, 7.5

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. Bit ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However my favorite sneakers of the moment are the Addidas Cloud Foam . These are white sneakers which are very versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe but also are very comfortable for walking long distances.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Teva Women's Midform Universal, Black, 9 M US

A sandal is perfect for summer travel. Depending on how much walking you plan on doing depends whether you need something with arch support. If you do want a comfortable sandal for walking, we don’t think you can go wrong with Teva.

Optional Shoes

Other shoes you may want to add depending on the destination include:

Best Accessories for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Summer travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Summer travel accessories include:

Achillea Soft Silky Reversible Paisley Pashmina Shawl Wrap Scarf w/Fringes (Dark Seagreen)

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect summer capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

Travelon Women's Messenger Bag, Black, One Size

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in European cities such as Rome and Barcelona which do have pickpocket problems.

I find these types of bags give me a bit more peace of mind when traveling as they make it harder for pickpockets to get into. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop crossbody bags here.

Note: a tote bag is also handy for souvenir shopping too.

FURTALK Womens Beach Sun Straw Hat UV UPF50 Travel Foldable Brim Summer UV Hat

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photos as well as a great way to keep your face protected in the sun..

We like the floppy wide brimmed hats in a color that complements rather than matches your capsule wardrobe. For beach destinations you can go for wider brims than cities.

Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and lightweight linen dresses to walking sandals and packable beach totes, you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane, Lululemon, Banana Republic, and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your item of choice.

Build your summer capsule wardrobe:

The breathable tank top, the perfect short, the linen pant, the classic button-down, the basic tee, the midi dress, the midi skirt, the exercise dress, the white sneaker, the walking sandal, the comfortable heel, the quality bathing suit, the packable tote.

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I own it in multiple colors). Nike and Lululemon make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. High-waisted, light wash options are ideal for hot summer days and pair well with just about any top in your suitcase.

travel capsule summer 2022

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

travel capsule summer 2022

Every traveler needs a go-to tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). Cotton tees from Everlane, Skims, True Classic, and Cuts are breathable and lightweight, making them year-round staples for every type of packing list . No matter where I'm headed, whether it's a beach trip in Miami or a cabin getaway in Vermont, I have at least two comfy tees in my weekender .

travel capsule summer 2022

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool , or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down will keep you cool and covered.

travel capsule summer 2022

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Abercrombie's linen blend dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus, Farm Rio, and Banana Republic. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

travel capsule summer 2022

Equally elegant and comfortable, a midi skirt can be dressed up or down with a pair of low heels, sneakers, or sandals. A skirt like this elevates an otherwise simple look and can be reworn endlessly throughout a trip with any of your favorite tanks, tees, or blouses. We love these chic styles from Free People, Banana Republic, and Cuyana, but for something under $40, Amazon brand The Drop's high-waisted skirt is a great staple.

Image may contain: Clothing, Dress, Adult, Person, Accessories, Jewelry, Necklace, Fashion, Footwear, Shoe, and Beachwear

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a cute daytime outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do, a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel and whatever comes next. For practicality and comfort, I love ones that have built-in shorts underneath, like the Outdoor Voices style.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our team's favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for each.

travel capsule summer 2022

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without causing blisters, but that still leaves you looking put together. These options below from Rothy's, Olukai, Birkenstock, and Teva can take you from the pool to lunch to sightseeing around town. Comfortable, versatile, and packable, a good walking sandal is simply a must.

travel capsule summer 2022

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings or special events you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in. Bonus points for block heels and mules—both styles are easier to walk in and provide decent stability on uneven ground.

travel capsule summer 2022

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece or high-waisted set. Some of our favorite men's swim trunks are from Todd Snyder and Lacoste, but we have plenty more options where that came from.

travel capsule summer 2022

A packable tote bag that you can bring to the beach, shopping, or to the hotel pool will always come in handy. When I'm low on suitcase space, I prefer one that can lay completely flat—like Rothy's Lightweight Tote. These roomy, beachy bags all fit a day's worth of essentials, including a beach towel , water bottle, and lots of sunscreen .

The Ultimate 2022 Capsule Wardrobe in 9 Simple Buys

Maxine Eggenberger

If you're a loyal Who What Wear reader, as I suspect you might be, you'll have already devoured our  summer 2022 trend report , outlining every notable look, garment, and accessory we saw during September's fashion-month showcase. If this, however, is not the case, I suggest you take a look at it and meet me back here once you're up to speed.

Okay, now that you know precisely what the new collections look like, let's talk about how to channel them in real life. We know the runways present an exaggerated interpretation of the trends. Still, I'm always interested in seeing how I can realistically add them to my wardrobe and work them into my daily outfits—this is where my 2022 capsule wardrobe  comes in.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1655117453667-main

Neutral tones are a fashion headliner this year.

Below, I've taken the key looks from the summer 2022  shows and have pinpointed the nine pieces you need to stay on top of the trends for the season ahead. No, you read that right—you only need  nine  pieces to complete 2022's covetable aesthetic. These items are guaranteed to be huge for the foreseeable future, and if you ask me, it's never too soon to start test-driving what's next in fashion.

So keep scrolling to discover what you need in your 2022  capsule wardrobe and to shop my favorite finds for each category.

1. OVERSIZE BLAZER

It's hard to call  blazers a trend, as they're one of the most classic pieces you can own, but the oversize silhouettes seen at Stella McCartney and Jil Sander are absolutely worthy of that accolade.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093731874-image

2. MAXI SKIRT

It's been a long time since maxi skirts were so prevalent on the runway, but they just kept cropping up. Everyone from Chloé to Givenchy showcased them in their collections. There was, however, one commonality: They were all sleek and streamlined.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093459396-image

3. PLATFORM SHOES

Platforms are a trend that has been bubbling under the surface for a few seasons now, but make no mistake—they are very much back this year. Nodaleto has a new slingback silhouette I just know is going to fly, but you can also get your stacked fill on the high street should your budget not stretch that far.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640094552911-image

4. WHITE DRESS

Flocks of white dresses cascaded down the runways throughout the course of fashion month. Although they always make a comeback for summer, 2022's iterations are distinguishable by their cutouts, ruffles, and fancy fabrications like tulle and sequins.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093074957-image

One of the more controversial trends from the spring/summer 2022 runways, bra tops were everywhere you turned. Worn boldly on their own or layered under shirting and jackets, how you style yours is entirely up to you.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640093293731-image

6. SOMETHING FEATHERED

Feathers are synonyms with party season, but this year they're sticking around for spring. Pastel shades decorated the collections of so many designers—Gucci, Valentino, and Giambattista Valli to name a mere few. My favorite way to channel the trend is with a cardigan trimmed with the fluffy stuff. Though, Karen Millen's trousers are tempting too.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640091624750-image

7. PREPPY KNITWEAR

I've never been the sporty type, but I'm thinking of joining this fashion league. Cricket and varsity were the dominant knits on the spring/summer 2022 runways and will help you perfect the preppy vibe that overarches the season with ease.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640092095104-image

8. LOGO BAG

Designers have been delicate with their branding on bags for a while now, but not for 2022. No, this is the year where in-your-face branding will make a comeback, and you'll want absolutely everyone to know where your bag is from. Gucci and Loewe have already mastered the look (as did Tory Burch on the runway), but I'm also enjoying the high street's take.

2022-capsule-wardrobe-296678-1640092679350-image

9. TROUSER SET

If you lived in your knitted set in 2021, rest assured this is a safe space, and you have nothing to feel ashamed of. Still, times are changing, and I'm going to do my best to wean myself off loungewear. Instead, I'll be investing in a sleek trouser co-ord for a simple but elegant outfit solution.

2 Weeks Travel Capsule Wardrobe Ideas: Travel Light in Europe

In this post, I’m sharing my capsule wardrobe for 2 weeks in Europe this summer, how I was only able to pack 8 clothes items for a 2-week trip in Europe while visiting two countries.

We have been staying at home most of the time during the lockdown, so in 2022 early summer, we were super excited to finally stepped outside of California and visit UK and Italy for an 18-day trip – just a little over 2 weeks! Our trip is extremely packed with itineraries, as we planned to spend only 2 to 3 days in each city before moving onto the next one.

For minimalists like me, traveling is the true test of minimalism. And what is a better challenge than planing and trying out a travel capsule wardrobe this summer? So I was determined to make it work!

Although I generally prefer to travel light, this is really the lightest we’ve been with the smallest capsule wardrobe pieces. In fact, our entire luggage was just two normal size backpacks!

2 week travel capsule wardrobe

What’s the selling points for traveling so light?

Traveling light with a compact travel capsule wardrobe can be very beneficial. Here are two points that stood out to me the most:

  • First of all, if I can pack everything into a backpack, it makes my travel day way easier. No need to check bags with the airlines which often comes with additional fees and waiting in lines. Besides, I don’t have to compete for the overhead luggage storage space on the airplane, as I can just slide the backpack under my seat.
  • Because we were traveling to Europe, we learnt it can be challenging to move big luggages on those old European cobble stone roads, not to mention we were constantly moving between cities.

2 week travel capsule wardrobe items

When reading articles about travel essentials or what to pack, people usually share a comprehensive list of type of items to pack, not so much on how to select them, especially how to make sure a small selection of clothes can work with each other during your trip. So this post is dedicated to how to select a limited number of clothing pieces as your travel capsule wardrobe and create looks for your travel.

I was traveling to UK and Italy in early summer 2022, where UK was a bit chilly and Italy was very hot. So I will be using this European trip as an example for spring to summer, or summer to fall travel capsule wardrobe demonstration, but the rules and tips can pretty much apply to any season.

Essential clothes to pack for a 2-week travel

So before sharing a looks, I thought I’d walk you through what I have packed in terms of clothing pieces. Because there will be temperature variations, I was primarily relying on layering for warmth, instead of packing super warm and chunky clothes (as they will take a good amount of space).

2022 summer europe travel capsule wardrobe essential

The picture above shows all the clothes I have packed, including what I was wearing to the airport.

To account for summer weather in Europe, which is really temperate to hot, I packed:

  • 2 short sleeve tops . For hot days. The V neck gingham was from Madewell with sleeve alteration .
  • 2 long sleeve tops . For moderate days, or better protecting my skin from the sun. The blue pattern top is handmade, which I’ll share a post soon.
  • 2 pairs of pants, in white and denim . This is to give more variety to my looks.
  • 1 cashmere sweater and 1 long coat . For layering and adding warmth during chilly days.

When selecting travel capsule wardrobe pieces, I made sure each clothes I’m bringing will work with at least two other pieces in the same capsule in terms of color and style. A couple tips of choosing pieces to pack for travel:

  • Stick to a color palette . Since I’ve only packed 8 pieces, I need to make sure each one will work with at least 2 pieces in the same capsule. So I’m sticking to a neutral color palette which is white, blue, and navy. Those colors also represent the majority of my wardrobe, so selecting pieces was fairly easy before the trip.
  • Make sure they layer well . For example, the tops I’ve packed are in two neck styles: crew neck and V neck. So I packed V neck cashmere sweater to layer with V neck tops(the short sleeve one and the long sleeve one). And my navy coat works for all 4 tops I have.
  • Be ready to wash your clothes from time to time . For longer trips like this one, you might need to wash some clothes so you can wear them again later in the trip. In my recent Europe trip, I have washed both the short sleeve tops and long sleeve tops which were relatively easy to wash. Just do it in an evening that you know you won’t have to change hotels the next day – so they get ample time to hang dry. I didn’t wash my pants during this trip as pants don’t get much sweat.
  • One example is about packing dress or not. I’m a dress person and love to sew dresses for myself, however, I made a decision to sticky with pants for this trip. That’s because I think pants are a bit easier to move around given how intense our trip is. But I would totally pack dress if I’m traveling to a super warm place for the entire trip.
  • Another example is packing swimsuits. So we spent a day in Capri, Italy, and one activity we did was to sail a boat around the island. It might be nice to pack swim suits so I can jump into the ocean if I want, but I decided it wasn’t worth it for me to carry my swim suits for 18 days just so I can wear them for 3 hours during sailing. At the end, we stayed on the boat and didn’t regret a bit about not packing swimwear.

Essential accessories to pack for 2-week travel

Now let’s talk about accessories and other capsule wardrobe items I brought for the 2 week trip in summer Europe. Because accessories don’t get dirty as quick as clothes, I brought one per category, except I packed an extra pair of earrings as they are so small.

I wore my sneakers to the airport so I only had to stuff my flip flops in my backpack. I’m a big fan of packing flip flops: they are quite lightweight to bring, and you can wear them in the hotel to free your feet after a long day, plus wear them after shower with wet feet.

Sun hat is useful when you are traveling to anywhere sunny. The yellow Kanken bag is my go-to luggage bag because they are extremely lightweight without sacrificing the durability.

Capsule wardrobe looks for 2 weeks in Europe

Now with knowledge of the all clothes and accessories I included for my capsule wardrobe , here are the looks I’ve created with them for my 2 week travel in Europe this summer.

Note: This is not a comprehensive list of all the looks I have wore during this 2 week trip, but they are here to give you some ideas of how I’m layering them together without being repetitive. For example, in each look, you can swap a different pair of pants, earrings, or tops.

From look 1 to look 6, these capsule wardrobe looks are arranged from hot weather to cold weather.

2 week travel capsule wardrobe looks in my real life Europe trip

Now I want to share some examples of me wearing my travel capsule wardrobe for our 2-week European trip in summer 2022.

This photo was taken the first day of travel, right before we hopped on an Uber to go to the airport. I was wearing Look 5 .

When traveling by flight, I like to wear more layers:

1. To offload my luggage, so I could pack a bit more in.

2. To keep myself warm during flights as it can get quite cold.

europe summer travel capsule wardrobe

I was wearing Look 3 in those two photos above. On the right photo, I layered V neck cashmere sweater on top.

In fact, when I’m unsure about the weather, I just pack the sweater in my backpack, enclosed in a small linen bag to protect it. This way I can take it out whenever feeling cold. They are quite lightweight too.

summer italy travel wardrobe europe

I was wearing Look 2 and Look 4 in those photos above. You might notice I was wearing the same top. Just by changing up the pants and adding a layer piece, they look quite different.

In Look 4 , the top layers work quite well together as they are both V neck.

Hope those photos taken from my 2-week European trip were helpful to show how some of the capsule wardrobe looks appear in real life travels.

I have worn all 6 looks, plus more variations for more than 2 weeks in Europe this summer. I just selected a few photos to show you the idea as I was mostly taking photos of the architecture during travel, not so much of myself 🙂

Which one is your favorite look?

Save for later

Capsule wardrobe packing list for 2 weeks in Europe this spring / summer, how I was only able to pack 8 clothes items for a 2-week trip in Europe. Great for minimalists who want to travel light and are looking for outfit ideas!

28 Summer Capsule Wardrobe Staples That Are Just Impossibly Cool

Real talk: Warm-weather dressing isn’t always as effortless as throwing on a dress and slippers, but a summer capsule wardrobe can help you stylishly navigate the very hot and humid spaces—and the most refrigerated ones—with ease.

The trick to building out the ideal summer capsule wardrobe is focusing on fabrics and silhouettes. Just as in spring you gravitate towards wardrobe essentials that lend themselves well to layering, for peak temperatures you want breathable, lightweight materials, like linen , cotton, and silk, that move easily and feel good on skin—and don’t trap heat. When it comes to fit, anything loose and flowy usually works. (It’s little surprise that one of the most popular summer fashion trends is relaxed suiting.) And don’t sweat the length: Midi and maxi styles tend to be just as—if not more—comfortable than minis, while tailored shorts (and jorts) read more appropriate than cutoffs in semiformal settings.

Our top picks:

  • Best Tank Top: Free People Kate Tee , $38
  • Best T-Shirt: Hanes Essential T-Shirt (4-Pack) , $16

The best part about dressing for the season, though, is all the colorful accessories that come out to play. A great beach bag , a charming woven tote , and stackable summer jewelry —these are small staples that pack a punch with a simple look—and tend to get a ton of wear.

To make the next few weeks as fuss-free as possible (at least when it to comes dressing for the heat), we rounded up all the warm-weather essentials you need for a stylish summer—check them out below.

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Steve Jobs wore his trademark black turtleneck. Former President Obama keeps his wardrobe simple to avoid decision fatigue . Forbes even made a list of celebrities who always dress the same . What can we learn from the idiosyncrasies of the rich and famous?

We can learn to keep our wardrobes simple, especially when traveling.

Building a core wardrobe of matching basics will help you pare down your packing list and travel with just a carry on backpack , saving time and money.

Plus, since your clothing is meant to mix and match, a capsule wardrobe makes figuring out what you want to wear that much easier—you can recombine any pieces you like into a fresh outfit.

In this article, we’ll show you how to build a capsule wardrobe that will fit in your carry on and keep you looking sharp wherever you go. Then we’ll look at example packing lists for different types of trips and travelers . Finally, we’ll dig into specific product recommendations that deserve a spot in your bag.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

What Is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of basic, functional clothing that won’t go out of style . Each item should be multi-purpose and compatible with the rest of the wardrobe. Think versatile staples , not this season’s must haves .

An ideal travel capsule wardrobe will also consist of a small number of quality items that can withstand the rigors of life on the go. You shouldn’t need to replace everything on your next trip.

Finally, you should genuinely like every item in your capsule wardrobe. Remember, simple and functional don’t have to mean ugly. You want to feel good about reaching for these pieces again and again.

Woman wearing the Outbreaker Travel Backpack

Choose the Right Bag

A capsule wardrobe won’t go far without the right bag to pack it in. Choose a travel backpack that’s carry-on-sized like the Outbreaker Backpack . The Outbreaker fits a week’s worth of clothes, making it ideal for traveling with a capsule wardrobe.

Your travel capsule wardrobe should follow the principles of packing light .

Pack for One Week

You don’t have to replace your entire closet. Your packing list should include enough items for one week’s worth of outfits. When you travel for longer than a week, do laundry.

Pack Layers, Not Bulk

A few thin layers are more versatile than one heavy layer. Light pieces are also smaller to pack, making them perfect for carry-on traveling.

Choose the Right Fabrics

To avoid breaking out the iron in every place you stay, opt for clothing that’s naturally wrinkle-free .

Merino wool is good at repelling odors and regulating temperature, while synthetic performance fabrics are good at wicking sweat. Avoid 100% cotton, which is quick to smell and slow to dry.

Aim for clothes that are easy to maintain. Vacation is too short to waste on trips to the dry cleaner.

Invest in Quality Materials and Craftsmanship

A high-quality t-shirt can immediately elevate your outfit. You also don’t want ripped seams and lost buttons on the road, so don’t cheap out on the basics. Opt for well-made items that you can count on for many trips to come.

Avoid fast fashion, which won’t hold up in a capsule wardrobe.

Simplify Your Color Palette

Keep your capsule wardrobe within a matching (and ideally neutral) color palette, so you don’t have to decide which clothes to wear together. Leave bright hues and wild patterns as accent pieces or for the rest of your closet at home.

Pick Timeless Cuts

Remember, a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. Go for timeless silhouettes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t waste energy worrying about the latest trends.

Consider Tailoring

Proper fit can make all the difference between looking sloppy and looking chic. Hem pants, shorten sleeves, and take in waistbands to add polish to even the most basic outfits.

You’ll be getting a lot of use out of these pieces, so a trip to the tailor is worth the cost.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Checklists

Our basic capsule wardrobe packing list will work for most kinds of trips. We’ve based this list off of our ultimate carry on packing list , which is designed to last a week in a carry on . You can mix and match items and lists to build one that makes the most sense for you and your travels.

We’ve also included additional packing lists for business travelers , outdoor adventurers, and those heading to extreme climates below.

Women’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts or tank tops
  • 2 blouses for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 light jacket or fleece
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 2-3 bras (including 1 sports bra; stick to smooth, skin-toned fabrics that won’t show through your tops or require delicate cleaning)
  • 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and everyday use
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (flats, booties, fancy sandals, etc.)
  • 1 pair of athletic shorts
  • Optional: 1 pair of exercise shoes (tie or clip these to the outside of your bag to save space)
  • Optional: 1 midi skirt , maxi skirt, or lightweight dress (if you’re traveling somewhere cold, add a pair of tear-resistant black tights )

Men’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts
  • 1 button-up shirt for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (oxfords, loafers, etc.)

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for beach vacations , cruises, and other warm-weather trips.

  • 2-3 casual, comfortable t-shirts or tank tops in breathable fabrics (skip long-sleeve tops)
  • 1-2 short-sleeved blouses or button-up shirts
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down (consider breezy pants, shorts, or lightweight skirts )
  • 2-6 pairs of socks (If you plan on lounging at the beach all day, you can cut this number down to two: the pairs you’ll wear on your roundtrip flights)
  • 2-3 bras (sports bra and everyday)
  • 1 pair of flip flops or walkable sandals (if you’ll be doing any sort of hiking or water sports, make sure to get sandals that you can secure to your foot)
  • 1 pair of “nice” sandals or shoes
  • 1 baseball cap or sun hat
  • 2 bathing suits (one to wear while the other is drying)
  • 1 beach cover up (a lightweight sarong, beach dress, or shorts/top combo)
  • 1 lightweight cardigan, gauzy button up, or other layering top (you don’t need a heavy or insulated jacket for hot-weather trips, but should still bring a light cover-up for air-conditioning and unexpected weather changes)

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for winter travel, especially if you’ll be spending time sightseeing outdoors.

  • 1-2 comfortable, casual t-shirts for layering
  • 2 long-sleeved base layers for particularly cold days
  • 1 long-sleeved button-up shirt or blouse for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 sweater , fleece, or hoodie
  • 1 packable puffer jacket for added insulation (depending on how cold and wet your destination is, you may need to bring an additional coat or shell to protect against rain and wind)
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of weather resistant boots (duck boots, Blundstones , etc.)
  • 1 pair of “nice,” closed-toe shoes
  • 6 pairs of tall socks
  • 1 pair water-resistant gloves
  • Neck gaiter or scarf
  • Optional: long johns or leggings to wear under pants on extremely cold days

Business Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If your travel includes regular meetings, in person or online, consider adding the following to items your capsule wardrobe:

  • 2 collared dress shirts or blouses in wrinkle-resistant fabric (having two means you can rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 2 professional bottom-half pieces, like wrinkle-resistant slacks or knee-length skirts
  • 1 travel blazer
  • 2 pairs of dress socks (if you’ll have in-person meetings)
  • 1 pair of comfortable dress shoes, pumps, or block-heeled sandals
  • Optional: 1 pair of earrings (think: simple studs or small hoops that will go with multiple outfits; don’t bring anything valuable)

Adventure Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list if you plan to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors:

  • 3 t-shirts or tank tops in performance fabrics like merino wool
  • 1 packable puffer jacket or fleece (plus climate-specific gear if necessary)
  • 2 pairs wool hiking socks (yes, in addition to your other socks; you won’t want to spend the evening lounging in the same grimy socks you wore all day on the trail)
  • 2 sports bras (to rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 1-2 pairs of athletic shorts
  • 1 pair of quick-drying travel pants
  • 1 pair of sturdy, closed-toe shoes like cross trainers, which are lightweight yet can handle rough terrain (if your trip includes serious trekking, consider clipping a pair of hiking boots to the outside of your pack)
  • 1 pair of water-friendly shoes (stick to shoes like Tevas , Keens , or Chacos , which offer much more stability than flip flops)
  • Baseball hat or visor for sun protection
  • Optional: 1 pair of jeans or other casual bottoms (to wear when not actively adventuring)
  • Optional: 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and casual everyday use (consider a supportive slip-on style that’s easy to don after a long day on your feet)

Depending on the weather at your destination, make two workout capsule wardrobes: one for cold weather and one for warm weather. Store one at your home base and swap it out when needed.

The Best Clothing for Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Remember that a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. No cheap throwaways. No fast fashion.

This wardrobe is an investment. If something costs more than you would usually pay, that’s okay, as long as it lasts longer and never goes out of style.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe T-Shirts

Merino wool is the ideal t-shirt fabric because it regulates your body temperature and repels odors. You can wear a merino shirt multiple times before needing to wash it.

Smartwool and Icebreaker are the most popular choices. We also like newer brands like Unbound Merino , Wool & Prince , and Outlier .

For non-wool t-shirts, check out brands like Everlane and Uniqlo .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Jackets

Your choice of jacket completely depends on the weather in your destination and your travel style.

Rainy weather is easy. Most outdoor companies make thin, packable rain jackets . Multiple Tortuga recommend the Patagonia Torrentshell ( men’s , women’s ). L.L. Bean’s H2Off and Columbia’s Arcadia II are solid, affordable picks.

Temperate weather and city trips call for canvas, jean, or shirt jackets, which are easy to dress up or down. Just avoid anything too bulky.

Leather jackets look great with just about anything but are heavy. If you’ll wear yours every day (and thus never have to fit it in your bag), a leather moto can make a strong addition to your wardrobe.

For cold (but not frigid) weather or more outdoorsy destinations, go for a packable puffer that you can layer over a fleece or under a weather-proof shell.

Down insulation offers the best warmth to weight ratio. My Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) kept me warm in actual Patagonia and smooshed into the size of a baseball in my backpack. Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) is a comparable budget option.

Because down doesn’t work well when wet, consider synthetic fill for drizzly destinations. Synthetic fibers dry faster than down and are also generally cheaper. Either way, stick to dark colors, which keep puffers looking sleek.

For very cold weather, invest in a hip- or knee-length water- and wind-resistant parka. While heavy, you can always stick your parka in the overhead bin during flights and leave it in your room when necessary.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Pants, Shorts, and Skirts

Jeans are some of the toughest, most versatile travel pants around. Just remember to wear them in transit as they’re big, bulky, and hard to pack. Go with your favorite style but avoid pairs with rips and distressing, as this makes them difficult to dress up.

Chinos are classics too. Our favorite travel chinos are from Bluffworks , but every brand from Gap to J. Crew to Banana Republic makes its own version. Find a pair that fits you well and isn’t too bulky.

Active brands like Athleta , Outdoor Voices , and Lululemon also offer a good selection of comfortable, travel-ready pants. Go for dark colors and no one will be able to tell that you’re wearing performance fabrics.

Athletic shorts are another versatile option on the road. They can be used at the gym, for outdoor adventures, as a substitute for pajamas, and as swim trunks.

Midi and maxi skirts are perfect for warm climates because they look fancy while also being comfortable, breezy, and modest.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

Unless all you’ll be doing is ordering piña coladas from a lounge chair, you’ll need more than a pair of flip-flops.

All travelers should invest in reliable, walkable travel shoes . Depending on the activity level of your trip, these can be loafers, ankle boots, cushioned flats, or even a pair of Birkenstocks .

Cole Haan is famous for its comfortable oxfords, with the packable ZERØGRAND line being particularly great for travel.

Sneakers are fine, but avoid pairs with loud colors or logos that will clash with the rest of your wardrobe. Brands like Thousandfell offer classic white tennis shoes in stain-resistant fabrics, while you can toss Allbirds’ Wool Runners ( men’s , women’s ) directly in the washing machine when your trip’s over.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Socks and Underwear

Choose any brand of underwear that looks good and feels comfortable but avoid cotton if you can. You need a fabric that will repel odors and dry quickly. We’re long-time fans of ExOfficio underwear. ExOfficio has a variety of styles for men or women that dry quickly, wick sweat, and repel odors.

For socks, we recommend Smartwool and Darn Tough . Both brands make wool socks that stay up and fit snugly. You can find both men’s and women ’s socks in every style from thick, calf-high hiking socks to thin, low-rise athletic socks.

A capsule wardrobe ensures that you’ll look great, no matter where your travels take you. You’ll also save time and money in shopping for, packing, and maintaining clothing in the long run.

Best of all, a capsule wardrobe reduces decision-making and eliminates stress from your packing list. That means you can get back to focusing on what matters: enjoying your trip.

Do-It-Yourself Travel Capsule Wardrobe 2022

Building a travel capsule wardrobe can be quite simple–if you know what you’re doing and what you need. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about travel capsule wardrobes:

The first step is to figure out what items you need and want to take with you on your trip. Make a list of everything you think you’ll need, including both clothing and non-clothing items. Once you have your list, start paring it down. Ask yourself if each item is truly essential. If not, get rid of it.

There’s no hard and fast rule, but a good guideline is to aim for around 30 items, including both clothing and non-clothing items. This may seem like a lot but remember that you’ll be wearing some of these items more than once.

A summer capsule wardrobe is similar to any other capsule wardrobe, but with a few key changes. First, you’ll want to focus on light, airy fabrics that won’t weigh you down in the heat. Second, choose items in cool, refreshing colors like white, blue, pink, and/or green. And finally, make sure to pack items that will protect you from the sun, like a hat and sunscreen.

A travel capsule wardrobe is a versatile and stylish way to pack for your next trip, whether you’re headed to the beach or the mountains. But how do you build one?

  • Start with the basics: choose a color palette of neutrals, like black, white, and navy.
  • Then, add a few pops of color with statement pieces like a brightly-colored top or printed dress.
  • Next, select versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks.
  • Think: a blazer that can be worn over a sundress during the day or paired with jeans and a tee for dinner.
  • Finally, accessorize! A great pair of sunglasses, a straw hat, and a cute crossbody bag will take your travel capsule wardrobe to the next level.

Now that you know how to build a travel capsule wardrobe, get started packing for your next adventure! Bon voyage!

Summer Capsule Wardrobe 2022

As someone who loves to travel, I am always looking for ways to make packing easier. I have found that one of the best ways to do this is by creating a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. This is perfect for travel because it means that you can pack fewer items and still have a variety of outfit options.

One of the first things you need to do when creating a travel capsule wardrobe is to choose a color palette. When choosing your colors, it is important to consider the climate of your travel destination.

For example, if you are traveling to a warm climate, you might want to pack light and airy colors like white, cream, and pastels. If you are traveling to a cold climate, you might want to pack darker colors like black, navy, and gray.

Once you have chosen your color palette, you can start selecting the pieces that you will include in your travel capsule wardrobe.

When choosing your clothing items, it is important to consider both function and style.

You want to make sure that all of the items you pack can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. And, of course, you want to make sure that your travel capsule wardrobe represents your personal style.

  • A versatile travel dress
  • A pair of comfortable jeans
  • A light sweater or cardigan
  • A travel jacket
  • A pair of walking shoes
  • A pair of dressy shoes
  • Undergarments

Of course, your travel capsule wardrobe will also need to include toiletries and other travel essentials. But, these are just a few examples of clothing items that you might want to include in your travel capsule wardrobe.

I hope this blog post has given you some helpful tips on how to build a travel capsule wardrobe. Creating a travel capsule wardrobe is a great way to make packing for your next trip easier and more fun. So, get started planning your travel capsule wardrobe today!

You may be wondering, “What is a travel capsule wardrobe?” A travel capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few versatile pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. This type of packing is ideal for travel because it minimizes the amount of clothing you need to pack and helps reduce wrinkles.

So, how do you build a travel capsule wardrobe? Start by picking a color palette. For example, you might choose neutrals like black, white, and grey. Then, add in a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. These might include a versatile dress, a cardigan or jacket, a pair of comfortable shoes, and some accessories.

Once you have your travel capsule wardrobe sorted, it’s time to start planning your outfits .

First, decide what kind of activities you’ll be doing on your trip. Will you be sightseeing during the day? Or going out for dinner and drinks in the evening? Then, mix and match items from your capsule to create looks that are both stylish and practical.

For example, if you’ll be doing a lot of walking during the day, you might want to pair your versatile dress with a cardigan and comfortable shoes. Then, for evenings out, you can swap the cardigan for a jacket and add in some statement jewelry. By planning your outfits in advance, you’ll be able to pack light and travel with ease.

I Asked ChatGPT to Build Me the Perfect Summer Travel Wardrobe — Here Are the 12 Capsule Items I'm Now Buying

Score the perfect white tee, comfy denim shorts, supportive walking shoes, and more, all for under $50 at Amazon.

travel capsule summer 2022

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m skeptical of the entire idea of AI, but when I realized that the technology could help me with the one thing I hate the most, well, I was all ears. What is that one thing, you might ask? Packing . I find the entire task to be incredibly overwhelming, and I’m often left with the pervasive fear that I’ve forgotten something important. So, as a test run, I took to ChatGPT to build the perfect packing list that I could use for summer travel — and it did not disappoint.

With options broken down into categories such as tops, bottoms, shoes, and dresses, I was able to get a clearer picture of exactly what I needed to make a multitude of outfits with as few pieces as possible, and now I’m more aware than ever of the holes in my summer wardrobe. If you’ve found yourself in a similar dilemma, keep reading to find the 12 essentials from Amazon that ChatGPT recommends adding to your suitcase for your next summer trip, so you never wind up forgetting the basics ever again.

White T-shirt

Building the perfect capsule wardrobe starts with identifying a white T-shirt with a fit you love, and this flattering scoop neck is a great place to start. A simple base to shape every outfit around, this top can easily be dressed up or down with anything from a maxi skirt to a pair of denim shorts, and at just $15, it’s an affordable addition to your suitcase. This particular shirt is made from a breathable polyester blend that won’t wrinkle easily when packed away, and it’s complete with a form-fitting finish that makes it ideal for layering.

Striped Blouse

Your ideal packing list should also include a more fun, patterned shirt to add dimension to your wardrobe, and this striped tee is another top that you’ll be happy to have packed for your next trip. The cotton blend will feel soft and gentle against the skin while remaining lightweight and airy, and I’m sure I’ll be able to create endless outfit options with it without having to go overboard on my packing. ChatGPT recommended a striped tee of any kind, but the thin stripes on this top are an incredibly flattering option that I’m partial to.

Denim Shorts

Denim shorts will never truly go out of style, which is exactly why AI recommends adding a pair to your packing list for any trip you have planned this summer. I’m loving the slightly looser fit of this mid-rise pair that’s simple enough to be worn with any top in my suitcase, plus, the longer length will help to ward off chafing and discomfort during long sightseeing days. They’re stretchier than traditional denim, naturally making them more comfortable, so even if I wind up wearing them during a long car or train ride, I’ll feel just as good as if I were wearing lounge pants.

Linen Pants

Combine the comfort of pajama pants with the style of trousers in these effortless, loose-fitting linen palazzo pants that fit on your packing list for everything from a beach vacation to an international city excursion. The ruched waistband of these pants make them supremely comfortable for wear during a longhaul flight, while the relaxed fit of the legs will never constrict movement or make you too warm. I can already see them becoming my go-to base for every look I wear during my next trip — and they’re only $32.

Flowy Midi Skirt

This gorgeous white maxi skirt is poised to be the best new addition to your wardrobe for the spring and summer, and with an elasticized waistband, it might just be the most comfortable as well. Landing just above the ankle, this skirt is an ideal length for sightseeing as it won’t drag on the ground, and it even boasts deep pockets which only add to its convenience for wearing on the go. Dress it up with sandals or down with sneakers, but this skirt will make you the best-dressed traveler at any outings you have planned for your next vacation.

Pieces that you can throw on and run out the door in are always going to be major assets while traveling, which is exactly why ChatGPT suggested adding a neutral maxi dress into your suitcase for the days when you want to look your best with minimal effort. This boho-style piece is sure to turn heads even if you’re wearing it during a day of sightseeing or shopping, while the breezy material promises to keep you cool even as the temperatures soar. I’m eyeing the simple apricot shade, but if you’re looking to get a pop of color into your suitcase, you’re in luck — there are 24 options to choose from.

If you’re limiting yourself to only packing two dresses from your summer capsule wardrobe, AI suggests including a flouncy sundress for daytime activities and warmer weather. This effortless number can be worn as a beach cover up, to a nice dinner, or during a day of taking in the sights of a new city, so you’ll never feel ill prepared for any occasion with this tucked into your packing cubes. It’s lightweight and airy so you won’t be bogged down by heavy materials in the sweltering summer heat, and a wide open tie-back is the icing on the cake of this effortlessly cool and carefree piece.

Lightweight Cardigan

When it comes to selecting the best layer to add to your suitcase during the warmer months, a loose and flowy cardigan will never do you wrong. From the plane to an overly air conditioned restaurant, this breezy sweater is perfect to quickly warm you up, and it can be thrown into your bag or around your shoulders while taking up minimal space. Even when you’re embarking on a tropical getaway, it’s still essential to have a top layer at the ready, and the loose, relaxed knit of this piece makes it a must-have addition to any wardrobe to address unexpected chill in style.

Comfortable Sandals

Narrowing down your footwear options for travel is no small feat, but according to AI, a pair of comfortable sandals should not be left out of the running. This supportive pair is designed with footbeds made from yoga mats for truly unparalleled comfort, while the adjustable straps allow for the perfect fit every time. These sandals are especially well-suited for traveling since they can be worn hiking, sightseeing, or during long hours at the airport — after all, versatility is the name of the game when it comes to your capsule wardrobe.

White Sneakers

It’s no secret that our editors at T+L can’t get enough of white sneakers for traveling, so it came as no surprise that AI was in agreement that they’re an obvious choice for one of the two pairs of shoes you might need on your next trip. This ultra-cushy pair from Rocket Dog is on my radar as a new addition to my shoe collection since they’re designed with comfort in mind, and padded heels and breathable canvas uppers make these shoes practically perfect for the summertime, taking me from day to night without ever causing blisters. Best of all, they’ll look great when paired with any of the other pieces in this capsule wardrobe, so I know they’ll get plenty of wear.

Bathing Suit

It’s never a bad idea to throw a bathing suit into your suitcase depending on where you’re headed this summer, and this sleek one-piece with a tasteful cutout in the mid-section is my top choice right now considering that the $36 suit has earned a whopping 8,200 five-star ratings at Amazon for it’s flattering fit and comfortable design. The bottom of the swimsuit provides full coverage which is always a plus, while the criss-cross top provides ample support. So, if you end up signing up for any aquatic activities like surfing or rafting during your next vacation, you’ll be happy to have a one-piece at the ready.

The final — and perhaps most obvious — item that should find its way into your summer capsule wardrobe is a comfy loungewear set that you can wear anywhere from the airplane to the city streets, and even to bed (provided you wash it first!). Since the weather is heating up, I’m opting for a short-sleeve and shorts combo which will keep me looking and feeling cool, and paired with the sneakers or sandals and even a loose-fitting cardigan , this is an outfit that I’ll feel confident sightseeing in. This tracksuit set is made with a loose waffle knit that will feel as soft as a cloud against my skin, and I especially love the drawstring and elastic waistband so I can achieve a supremely comfortable and relaxed fit with every wear.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — After years of delays and stumbles, Boeing is finally poised to launch astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA.

It’s the first flight of Boeing’s Starliner capsule with a crew on board, a pair of NASA pilots who will check out the spacecraft during the test drive and a weeklong stay at the space station.

NASA turned to U.S. companies for astronaut rides after the space shuttles were retired. Elon Musk's SpaceX has made nine taxi trips for NASA since 2020, while Boeing has managed only a pair of unoccupied test flights.

Boeing program manager Mark Nappi wishes Starliner was further along. “There’s no doubt about that, but we’re here now.”

The company's long-awaited astronaut demo is slated for liftoff Monday night.

Provided this tryout goes well, NASA will alternate between Boeing and SpaceX to get astronauts to and from the space station.

A look at the newest ride and its shakedown cruise:

THE CAPSULE

White with black and blue trim, Boeing's Starliner capsule is about 10 feet (3 meters) tall and 15 feet (4.5 meters) in diameter. It can fit up to seven people, though NASA crews typically will number four. The company settled on the name Starliner nearly a decade ago, a twist on the name of Boeing’s early Stratoliner and the current Dreamliner.

No one was aboard Boeing’s two previous Starliner test flights. The first, in 2019, was hit with software trouble so severe that its empty capsule couldn’t reach the station until the second try in 2022. Then last summer, weak parachutes and flammable tape cropped up that needed to be fixed or removed.

Veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are retired Navy captains who spent months aboard the space station years ago. They joined the test flight after the original crew bowed out as the delays piled up. Wilmore, 61, is a former combat pilot from Mount Juliet, Tennessee , and Williams, 58, is a helicopter pilot from Needham, Massachusetts. The duo have been involved in the capsule’s development and insist Starliner is ready for prime time, otherwise they would not strap in for the launch.

“We’re not putting our heads in the sand,” Williams told The Associated Press. “Sure, Boeing has had its problems. But we are the QA (quality assurance). Our eyes are on the spacecraft.”

THE TEST FLIGHT

Starliner will blast off on United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. It will be the first time astronauts ride an Atlas since NASA’s Project Mercury, starting with John Glenn when he became the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. Sixty-two years later, this will be the 100th launch of the Atlas V, which is used to hoist satellites as well as spacecraft.

“We’re super careful with every mission. We’re super, duper, duper careful" with human missions, said Tory Bruno, CEO of ULA, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Starliner should reach the space station in roughly 26 hours. The seven station residents will have their eyes peeled on the approaching capsule. The arrival of a new vehicle is "a really big deal. You leave nothing to chance,” NASA astronaut Michael Barratt told the AP from orbit. Starliner will remain docked for eight days, undergoing checkouts before landing in New Mexico or elsewhere in the American West.

STARLINER VS. DRAGON

Both companies’ capsules are designed to be autonomous and reusable. This Starliner is the same one that made the first test flight in 2019. Unlike the SpaceX Dragons, Starliner has traditional hand controls and switches alongside touchscreens and, according to the astronauts, is more like NASA’s Orion capsules for moon missions. Wilmore and Williams briefly will take manual control to wring out the systems on their way to the space station.

NASA gave Boeing, a longtime space contractor, more than $4 billion to develop the capsule, while SpaceX got $2.6 billion. SpaceX already was in the station delivery business and merely refashioned its cargo capsule for crew. While SpaceX uses the boss' Teslas to get astronauts to the launch pad, Boeing will use a more traditional “astrovan” equipped with a video screen that Wilmore said will be playing “Top Gun: Maverick.”

One big difference at flight’s end: Starliner lands on the ground with cushioning airbags, while Dragon splashes into the sea.

Boeing is committed to six Starliner trips for NASA after this one, which will take the company to the station’s planned end in 2030. Boeing’s Nappi is reluctant to discuss other potential customers until this inaugural crew flight is over. But the company has said a fifth seat will be available to private clients. SpaceX periodically sells seats to tycoons and even countries eager to get their citizens to the station for a couple weeks.

Coming soon: Sierra Space’s mini shuttle, Dream Chaser, which will deliver cargo to the station later this year or next, before accepting passengers.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has made nine taxi trips for NASA since 2020, while Boeing has managed only a pair of unoccupied test flights.

Boeing program manager Mark Nappi wishes Starliner was further along. “There’s no doubt about that, but we’re here now.”

The company’s long-awaited astronaut demo is slated for liftoff Monday night.

Provided this tryout goes well, NASA will alternate between Boeing and SpaceX to get astronauts to and from the space station.

A look at the newest ride and its shakedown cruise:

THE CAPSULE

White with black and blue trim, Boeing’s Starliner capsule is about 10 feet (3 meters) tall and 15 feet (4.5 meters) in diameter.

In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, workers open up the capsule of the Shenzhou-17 manned spaceship after it lands successfully at the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Veteran NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are retired Navy captains who spent months aboard the space station years ago. They joined the test flight after the original crew bowed out as the delays piled up. Wilmore, 61, is a former combat pilot from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and Williams, 58, is a helicopter pilot from Needham, Massachusetts.

We’re super, duper, duper careful” with human missions, said Tory Bruno, CEO of ULA, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Starliner should reach the space station in roughly 26 hours. The seven station residents will have their eyes peeled on the approaching capsule. The arrival of a new vehicle is “a really big deal.

While SpaceX uses the boss’ Teslas to get astronauts to the launch pad, Boeing will use a more traditional “astrovan” equipped with a video screen that Wilmore said will be playing “Top Gun: Maverick.”

People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.

Temporary cinemas will be popping up across Moscow very soon, starting from July 16. All of the spots are brilliant examples of either constructivist or avant-garde architecture, so expect striking settings. A selection of classic Soviet films will be aired using cinematic equipment from the last century. All the screenings are free although online registration is required beforehand, while there will also be guided tours of the spaces, organized by the “Moscow through the Engineer's Eyes” company.

Registration will be open soon at mos-kino.ru

Following the success of former factories transformed into art spaces (VinZavod, Arma, Trekhgornaya manufacture), Khlebzavod (“bread factory”) No 9 is one newly opened joint that is attracting creative types from all over the city. The movie Time! Forward! will be screened in the building’s boiler room on July 16. It follows workers from the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, one of the largest steel companies in Russia, and is based on a novel by Soviet writer Valentin Kataev.

What’s more, Khlebzavod is a monument to constructivist architecture. Where better to watch such a film?

Roof of the Narkomfin Building

Narkomfin Building / Kirill Zykov/Moskva Agency

The Narkomfin Building was originally designed to house high ranking employees at the Commissariat of Finance. It was built by architects Moisei Ginsburg and Ignaty Milinis. Also a fine example of constructivism, it’s currently in a state of disrepair, locked down, and fairly difficult to get into - which is like a red flag to a bull for more adventurous types.

However, on July 30 the place will be opened up and people will be welcomed onto the roof to watch the film Faith and Truth.

A courtyard located in the 9th experimental block of the Novye Cheremushki district will turn into an outdoor cinema this summer. Cheremushki is the first district where Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchyov decided to build the iconic Khrushchyovka apartment blocks in the 1950s. As a result, thousands of Russians were given their own pads after decades living huddled together in communal apartments known as kommunalka .

Cheremushki is the adapted film-version of Dmitry Shostakovich’s operetta and will be shown here on Aug. 6. The organizers of the multiple screenings - the Moskino cinema chain - say they will revive the Soviet tradition of neighbors meeting in courtyards for a good old tongue wag. There will also be a guided tour of the block.

The last cinema venue remains a secret. On Aug. 27 there will be a screening, but at the moment no one knows where. Information will appear on mos-kino.ru but those who attend all four screenings above will be able to guess the last location.

A talk about architecture and Soviet history also will be hosted here.

Concur, P-Card, travel updates for summer 2024

An aerial shot of a sidewalk with a few students, leading to a building on the right side and flanked by a body of water on the left.

It’s been nearly a year since the introduction of the new travel policy and Concur to Clemson University. P-Card holders have been utilizing Concur for over a year now. Significant developments have occurred, and Procurement and Business Services is constantly refining the system and procedures for better efficiency. We’d like to provide you with some updates on Concur and the travel and expense protocols:

  • On April 10, Concur released a brand-new visual design theme for all users. This update brought a refreshed, modern look and feel with inclusive accessible design for all. The functionality of Concur did not change, only the colors and visual layout. For more information, visit the Announcements page on the Procurement website.
  • Updates to the Procedures: Employees traveling on Federal or Sponsored Awards should review the updated requirements in section 17 that specifically references meals and lodging requirements.
  • Conference Agendas: High-level agendas are not required unless traveling on Federal or Sponsored Awards.
  • ExpenseIt: Receipts uploaded manually, emailed, or uploaded via the Concur app will automatically be read and processed by Concur’s artificial intelligence (AI) software. ExpenseIt will take the charge/receipt details and attempt to fill in missing information such as expense type, total amount, vendor name, etc. Occasionally, the AI software can mislabel transactions, but this can be changed once the charge/receipt is added to a report. Users can disable this feature if desired in the expense preferences in their profile settings.
  • New P-Card Contact: We are happy to announce that we have hired a new P-Card Coordinator, Katie Jennings, who will begin later this month. Please continue to send all P-Card related questions to [email protected] and we will provide updated contact information once it’s available.
  • AI Functionality in Concur: The “External Validation” step that was built into Concur is currently turned off while we explore a new solution for monitoring receipts and transactions. In the interim, liaisons should be monitoring P-Card reports more closely for duplicate charges, unallowable, and unauthorized transactions. Once a new solution is put in place, we will send out updated information and what liaisons should be monitoring. The good news with this change is that Concur was now able to put a budget check step at the beginning of the approval workflow. We expect this to remain as the first step with any future tools we incorporate into the approval process.
  • Anthony Travel: Certain airlines have begun offering discounted fares when booked directly through the airline. Specifically, American Airlines offers deeply discounted rates directly through their site. If you are booking flights in Concur and notice that prices are higher than on other sites, please provide screenshots to Anthony Travel so that they can secure the lesser fare option. If they cannot secure it for you, they will give you permission to book outside of the system. Anthony is a “preferred” travel agent for American and should be able to offer the cheapest pricing, but some hurdles are still being worked out with American throughout the industry. But overall, Concur should be offering the same pricing available on direct airline and hotel sites, so there is not a requirement to confirm all reservations.
  • Please continue to reach out and provide feedback to our team ( [email protected] ) about any questions or challenges you have with Concur or the travel policy. It’s the only way we can make it better. Also, know that we are more than happy to meet with your department to discuss how Concur is being used in your area specifically. We have found that these discussions at the department level are the most effective way to clarify misunderstandings where folks are doing unnecessary work as well as allowing us to suggest changes to the process to address what the department is currently seeing as hurdles within Concur.

What Do People Wear in Italy?

Fashion in Italy is the same as other parts of the world. There are a variety of Italian attire style preferences to reflect the tastes of different personalities.

With the popularity of athleisure, over the years Italian fashion along with that of other European countries , has become more “casual”, not to be confused with gym clothing.

However, casual or any other clothing in Italy generally tends to differ from some countries in the sense that people wear items that are fitted to their bodies. A tailored look is the true secret to the Italian everyday fashion observed by visitors.

As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear for the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in a city. Unless you’re actually headed to the gym, you may want to consider not wearing gym attire.

While it’s not uncommon to wonder what do Italians wear , it’s also important to remember that the best clothing to pack on any trip is what makes you feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

What’s important is that you choose clothing when you travel that makes you feel good when you look in the mirror because confidence is key to style in Italy and everywhere else.

Insiders do note that Italy’s clothing style may vary from the north to the south and between generations.

  • Rome and the south may be considered to be more traditional with local trends.
  • In Venice , the weather might dictate the clothing over trends, especially when it rains.
  • Milan and the north, locals may have a very fashionable and sometimes over-the-top style, particularly when it comes to fashion week.
  • Overly-revealing clothing isn’t recommended when entering religious buildings.

What are the best shoes for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets. They’re BRUTAL when you’re on your feet sightseeing all day. Choose form and function over fashion!

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Popular shoe options include (click each item below for suggested styles):

  • Ankle Boots for spring and autumn
  • Ballet Flats and Loafers to dress up or for warm weather
  • Waterproof Boots for rain and snow
  • Comfortable Sightseeing shoes for year round visits
  • Cute Comfortable Summer Sandals
Read this post about how to choose the best walking shoes for Europe .

Popular cities like Venice or Rome are made for walking, so be sure to choose comfortable shoes . Consider waterproof leather boots for the colder months and simple, comfortable, canvas shoes for the warmer months.

Locals like to dine out with style and elegance so you may want to consider bringing some slightly dressier shoes if that suits your style. When deciding what to wear when traveling to Italy, avoid heels because they’ll leave you feeling uncomfortable.

What Should I Wear in Italy?

The most important factors in planning what you should and shouldn’t wear to Italy are your activities and the weather .

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Nothing will ruin your trip faster than being unprepared with the wrong clothing for the weather.

Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Below you’ll find helpful seasonal clothing tips and suggested packing lists with capsule wardrobe ideas that you can use as a guideline to prepare for a trip to Italy:

What to Wear in Italy in Spring

What is the weather in italy in spring (march, april, may).

Italian spring is beautiful–you can spot flowers and green everywhere. Spring may be considered the best season to plan a trip to Italy, as the temperatures are more moderate and the crowds lighter when compared to summer.

Spring in Italy can be unpredictable. The temperatures can vary from chilly to warm and sometimes even hot, from a minimum of 15°C/59°F to a maximum of 28°C/82°F. When it rains, and during early morning hours, the temperature can go down to 10°C/50°F. Checking the weather forecast before any trip is always recommended.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in Spring?

With fluctuating weather in the months of spring, layers are an absolute must! For example, what to wear in Italy in May will be different from what to wear in Italy in April.

Always choose 10 to 15 items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested spring Italy packing list below.)

Look for bright and light colors during this finicky season; when it’s sunny, it’s very warm. Jeans are a good choice or skirts in light fabrics.

Match your bottoms with a quality tee or pretty blouse, and don’t forget a sweater and light jacket for layering on cold days and evenings. Bring a waterproof outerwear item, such as a light trench coat, for unexpected rainstorms.

Choose one of these stylish travel raincoats for women to keep you dry!

Accessories always make an outfit but some may choose to avoid expensive jewelry or sunglasses. Consider bringing a sunhat for hot days.

What shoes should I wear in Italy in spring?

As with your clothes, plan your shoes based on the weather and your planned activities. Choose no more than two to three pairs of shoe in neutral colors that can mix and match with all your clothing. We suggest comfortable sightseeing shoes , activity shoes, and a second pair of sightseeing shoes if you’ll be experiencing mixed weather.

Make sure your sightseeing shoes are broken-in properly. Opt for a pair that is comfortable and you can wear it for hours without discomfort.

Popular sightseeing styles include sneakers ( Supergas tend to be a popular option) or waterproof shoes. Note that the best waterproof shoes are not made out of rubber; instead choose leather ankle boots , which are the best shoe option for travel to Europe in spring.

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats , loafers , or boots can be good options should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip. Alternatively, bring closed toe wedges if you prefer a shoe with a heel.

What to Wear in Italy in Summer

What is the weather in italy in summer (june, july, august).

Summer in Italy is insanely hot: temperatures can reach 35°C/ 95°F or higher. Not only is the heat strong but the air can feel muggy and humid. Tropical-type showers may occur in some areas such as Venice . For example, what to wear in Italy in June will be pretty similar to your July and August wardrobe.

Be careful to protect yourself during the hottest hours of the day by wearing sunblock and a sun hat .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in summer?

When deciding how to dress in Italy in the summer, dress comfortably with loose and light clothes. Light dresses might be the most comfortable this time of year, particularly in places such as Rome where the heat can feel unbearable.

Skirts , cropped trousers , (dressy) shorts with a nice top or a dressy blouse and a hat will complete the look.

Choose light colored clothing to avoid scorching in the blaring heat. Cotton, linen , and rayon fabrics are best.

Make sure you’re not wearing revealing clothing when you visit religious sites. Covered shoulders and below the knee clothing is recommended but not enforced. While you may not be stopped from entering the Vatican or St Mark’s

Basilica, it’s respectful to follow local traditions. Opt for a midi or maxi dress below your knees and a light wrap that you can place around your shoulders if wearing a sleeveless top.

Planning to visit religious sites? Find out what to wear to the Vatican and other religious buildings!

Always choose ten-fifteen items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. (See suggested summer Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Fall

What is the weather in italy in fall (september, october, november).

Autumn does not differ much from spring. Temperatures fluctuate from 15°C/59°F to 24°C/75°F and it rains quite a lot, so what to wear in Italy in September will be different than what to wear in Italy in October. In the plains in the north of Italy, you can experience foggy days, which are quite fascinating in cities like Venice or Milan .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in fall?

In September and autumn, you should pack the same items mentioned in the spring section above. These two seasons are similar and the only variations may be an umbrella and trench coat . Layers are essential especially as the weather begins to cool.

The key colors of the season are brown, purple, gray, and black, but you can always choose lighter colors to provide relief from warmer weather.

When in doubt, plan a monochrome travel wardrobe consisting of mostly black, a stunning handbag, and silk printed scarf.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Rather than Google search “dress Italy,” follow our guide on how to choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested fall Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Winter

What is the weather in italy in winter (december, january, february).

As mentioned before, winters can be quite cold. In the north, it snows a lot and sometimes it’s difficult to move around the city without slipping. The south is warmer but it snows at least once a year. Temperatures range from 10°C/50°F down to -8°C/18°F. And where the climate is humid, it’s colder–you can feel it in your bones.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in winter?

Pack a pair of warm gloves , a thick scarf , and a hat . If you are planning to go to the north, I suggest a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals , too.

In the south, you can take a winter coat or a quilted jacket. The rule in winter is to dress in layers as temperatures might change during the day, so pack some long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters , and cardigans .

A waterproof rain jacket can be useful, but I would suggest taking an umbrella, as it is more handy and fashionable.

The secret to packing light in winter is thermal underwear for women – these are a must!

What is the Best Luggage for Italy?

So the hard part’s out of the way; after much turmoil you’ve finally perfected your travel wardrobe and created a chic capsule collection – now it’s time to get packing! Which luggage will work best for you?

what-to-wear-in-italy

Travelpro Maxlite 5 19″ Softside Expandable Luggage | Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage

There are various things to consider when choosing the best luggage for Europe including a difference in carry on size, strict weight restrictions, mobility on the cobblestone streets, and long flights of stairs.

The best suitcase to have when traveling Italy can be a personal choice. Some prefer a hardside suitcase or softsuide suitcase , but it’s best to choose something between 19” to 20” for most European airlines, and ideally with four castors. The suitcase should be divided into two compartments (not just one big compartment) for easy packing. These are easy to travel with on bumpy terrain.

what-to-wear-in-italy

Tumi Voyageur Celina Laptop Backpack | Baggallini Avenue Tote Top Handle Bag

The best international carry on luggage can also entail your personal onboard item. The allowed personal item carry on size is generally 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. When choosing a personal item , ensure it has sufficient organizational compartments for your flight essentials, including an area for your devices, like a tablet or laptop.

For a European carry on size bag, a backpack is always a safe option. It’s also the perfect fit for those of us who prefer to travel hands-free.

Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes

Depending on how many days or weeks you’re traveling, you may want to use luggage organizers such as packing cubes , which allow optimum use of the space in your luggage, keeping everything organized and in place during your travels, and making the task of unpacking and repacking simple and stress-free.

As you’re headed to fashionable Europe, use an equally stylish carry-on , such as the Osprey Ozone , which is a personal favorite. Keep in mind that most of Europe’s budget airlines have a carry-on bag allowance of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airlines individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

A last thing to remember about luggage is that moving from plane to train or bus means there will be moments you won’t be with your suitcase. A wise security measure is to use a luggage tracking device . The Apple Airtags are highly popular for iPhone users and can be monitored through your Find My app, while Android users swear by the Galaxy SmartTag . Another popular one is the TilePro luggage tracker which works with both iOS and Android.

When traveling to Italy, you’ll need some of the standard, essential toiletries, including:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Moisturizer (face and body)
  • Makeup (we recommend keeping it simple: mascara, concealer, and a lip tint that doubles as a blush)
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Dry shampoo

Worried that all your toiletries, makeup, skincare, and hair styling tools won’t fit into your suitcase? Read these tips on how to travel size toiletries to learn how to make the most of limited space without sacrificing your routine!

We recommend you take the most important products in travel containers like these and try to either buy basics like shampoo and shower gel in Europe or use the items provided by hotels.

Also, consider your makeup–in many European cities, women opt for natural makeup focusing on a well groomed but not over-the-top appearance.

While a daily salon blow out isn’t necessary, be mindful of your hair and makeup. Find out if it’s necessary to bring a travel blow dryer here .

When choosing your styling tools, choose items that have dual voltage and bring along a travel adapter for all your electronics. Just make sure to add all these items to your backpacking packing list for Europe so you don’t forget them.

Check out our guide to toiletries for more tips!

What Should I NOT Pack for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets.

In addition, there is an Italian dress code in churches and other religious centers. You should cover your shoulders with a shawl or scarf, and wear bottoms that cover your knees.

Are jeans appropriate to wear in Italy?

While Europeans tend to dress up more than Americans, you still can wear jeans in Italy. However, avoid acid wash and extremely distressed denim and opt for medium-dark blues and blacks. Black skinny jeans always look chic in Europe!

Are leggings okay to wear in Italy?

Some travelers love wearing leggings for comfort, but they’re often too casual looking as pants for Italy. If you’re a big fan of leggings, consider pairing a black pair with long tunics during the spring, or wearing them under dresses and skirts in fall and winter.

What are the Best Shoes to Wear in Italy?

Based on reader recommendations, we suggest tall boots for winter and wedges for summer; other styles can be used interchangeably throughout the year.

Depending on the weather, flat ankle boots , boat shoes, or driving mocs are other top recommendations amongst our readers. They’re classic options and make the perfect alternative to ballet flats , especially if you need a little more room for soft insoles.

Italy Travel Tips

Before you head on your tour of Italy , check out these frequently asked questions on traveling to Italy.

What’s the best time of year to visit Italy?

Italy is a wonderful destination to visit year round but many agree that Spring is the best time to visit Italy. You’ll experience less crowds and moderate weather in comparison to summer when it’s scorching hot and busy.

Note that some places close in August for the local vacation period.

Weather in Italy

As you plan your packing list for Italy, keep in mind that the north is normally cold in winter and warm and humid in summer. Cities located on a higher altitude are more windy and cold, but you can enjoy a summer heat, thanks to the sun.

The south is characterized for being warmer, year-round. In some areas, it doesn’t even snow! Rome and the south are very hot in the summer 35°C/95°F (May-September), but it can be enjoyable thanks to the sea breeze. Winters are warmer and not as cold, with better weather than in the north.

Never travel without checking the weather forecast as this will be your ultimate packing guide for Italy. Remember that each city will have its own weather pattern so check the forecast for all the destinations you plan to visit.

Use websites such as Accuweather or Holiday Weather for advanced forecasts and don’t forget to check the weather one week and three days before your trip as mother nature doesn’t run on a tight schedule.

Sunglasses are a must every season; the sun seemingly never stops shining on the Italian peninsula.

What are the best accommodations in Italy?

We love Airbnb for accommodation in Italy. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

Transportation

For flights, I like booking through Travelocity or Cheapoair (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . You can also use ItaliaRail if booking for more than one person as the multiple booking option seems to give better rates than Trenitalia.

In Venice and when traveling to Sardinia or Sicily, you can take a water taxi or boat, which run regularly and are affordable.

You can also rent a car or vespa to travel within cities. Just keep in mind that the streets are very narrow and traffic can be intense, so if you’re not used to driving in Europe, you’re better off opting for a bus, metro, train, or boat.

Things to Do in Italy

Italy is one of the most amazing countries to visit because there are so many beautiful cities to see and sites to take in. Follow our recommendations before you travel to Italy .

What are the best sites in Italy to see?

  • Trevi Fountain
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • St Mark’s Square
  • Florence Duomo
  • Amalfi Coast
  • Cinque Terre

Where’s the best shopping in Italy?

If you find you have left behind an essential, or need to add to add classic Italy clothes to your travel wardrobe, don’t panic. Italy is the cradle of fashion and all of the biggest brands are located in every city. Stores like H&M and Zara are highly fashionable, with a wide range of clothes.

Italian department stores such as Coin and La Rinascente can be handy when looking for quality items. You can also find designer outlet stores in major shopping destinations, too! Before shopping, see what others are wearing on the streets to capture Italian street fashion.

Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet

Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy areas like major cities in Italy, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.

How can I stay safe while traveling in Italy?

Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof and choose items with strong zippers. Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch it. Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.

And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap. Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses .

Remember, the safest place for your passport is locked in your accommodation. Carry a photocopy or other ID when you’re sightseeing or are out at night.

Read these tips on how to keep your passport safe when you travel!

Suggested Anti-Theft Accessories for Italy

  • Bra stash , neck pouch , or money belt with RFID protection
  • Anti-theft crossbody bag
  • Passport case
  • TSA-approved luggage lock
  • Clothing with hidden pockets (like underwear , tops , and scarves )

Key Takeaways:

  • In general day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style, but this does not mean business clothing. A nice blouse and well-tailored denim is a timeless uniform that can work in Italy just as well as any other part of Europe.
  • Ultimately, choose comfortable, classic clothing that will transcend trends so you can look back at the pictures from your trip with fond memories.
  • With shoes, always choose comfort over fashion as you’ll spend long hours on your feet – don’t forget to break them in!
  • Elevators are not prevalent in local accommodation; be prepared to lift your own luggage up many flights of stairs and steep cobblestone hills.
  • Avoid oversized, heavy luggage if you plan to use trains, buses, or budget flights as storage space is limited. You should be able to maneuver through train stations (and trains) with ease.
  • Pickpockets are prevalent in all tourist cities, be aware of your surroundings and be practical about your belongings.
  • ALWAYS check the weather before you travel.

This packing list was my EVERYTHING for my September 2021 4-week trip to Italy for which I successfully packed carryon only!! I followed these recommendations to a T and even purchased many of the recommended items (sandals, sneakers, tops, Anatomie pants) and they worked wonderfully!! Thank you for such comprehensive and helpful guide!!

Jenn D.

Thank you so much for this list!!! We are planning on going to Italy for 10 days this coming year and I am planning on just packing a carry-on!

Alex

Have an amazing time Jenn!

Dear Alex, I could really use your expert help! I’m a 60 year old fashion forward man, well traveled in Italy and typically for a month, and only take carry-on luggage. All of your advice to others above is spot on! My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out!

For tips to help you pack for the mixed weather, check out this guide: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-guide-to-packing-for-different-climates/

We always recommend that for any destination, so long as you’re dressed appropriately for the weather, the culture, and your planned activities, your aim should always be to dress for your personal comfort level vs trying to blend in. For help with your packing also check out this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Hope this helps. Have the most amazing time in Italy! ?

It will be me, my husband, mother in law and uncle and aunt in law travelling this year in late July 18 days. Super excited but it has been many years since I traveled in Europe. Your tips are so helpful and appreciated. We are also going to be on a 7 day cruise from Rome to Venice so we must pack for both

Any tips you can provide are appreciated. I have read through about 20 different articles you have on your site. SUPER helpful

I didn’t see a lot of mention on shorts. In places like sightseeing in Pompeii is it acceptable? On shorts are the shorter denim with the appearance of wear or tears appropriate?

Hi Samantha, thank you for reaching out! Our 10 step guide to Europe may be a good place to start planning your packing: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ For dressing appropriately for sightseeing, particularly when visiting churches, have a read of this: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/ For the best advice, I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions, like wearing shorts around Pompeii, there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and travel tips and Italy is a popular destination so they will be able to help you with your questions. Deejay

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. I closer to 60 so just trying to work out suitable clothing for both destinations. I think I will just need light clothing for Greece and most of Italy.

Hi Deejay, the best place to start planning your packing may be to have a look at our 10 step guide to Europe: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/ Light clothes are fantastic especially if the weather will be particularly warm. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Also have a look at our articles which are written for people of an older generation: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/over-40-fashion/ You may find some ideas and suggestions you like! Have the most incredible time on your trip!! 🙂

Jessica

Just came across your post and plan to go to Italy in spring 2019. Your packing list looks great. I am going for 12 days, how many days is your list for?

Hi Jessica, here is a helpful guide that explains more about how to use our packing lists: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ The vacation packing lists are for indefinite travel. Generally speaking, you can pack enough for one week then do laundry and/or replenish toiletries once a week for the duration of your trip. You can also adapt it as needed. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful trip!!

Rachel

A scarf was a MUST for me. I could throw it over my shoulders when visiting churches and then toss it in my bag afterwards.

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel essential for Italy with us! 🙂

Anne

I was just in Northern Italy last week. Polo shirts are very popular with Italian men. Guys 30 and under wear shorts but those older do not in the cities. Metallic or beaded sneakers were popular with women and in store windows.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us! Hope you had an amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

Sylwia

I am going to Italy in April for the first time and your blog helps me a lot! It looks like my shopping won’t be too much of stress as Italian style is quite casual yet smart which I like. Besides that, I won’t stand out in the crowd! Thanks a lot! 🙂

Liz

Visiting Italy in May and basically fell in love with “Dress 1” on your list for spring packing, but the link isn’t right for SheIn and I can’t find it on their website. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean they’re not selling it! I have been looking for something relaxed and comfortable like that!

Hi Liz, thank you for reaching out! Dress 1 on the spring packing list is the Missufe Women’s Runched Casual Sundress which you can find here: https://amzn.to/2HTAVoK If you were referring to another dress, please let me know? Hope this helps. Have the most amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

I am off to Italy next summer for a foodie tour and your packing list will be a great help as i will be moving from place to place everyday.

This is an awesome website that I stumbled upon!!! My daughter and I will be taking a trip to Italy from July 10-20, 2017. We will be with a group of 64 from her school in Michigan, USA, and traveling from Milan to Capri, Italy. Six out of the ten nights we will be in a different city. Is there any advice you can give us so we get the most out of our packing and travels…What to bring, what not to bring…What types of clothing we will be most comfortable in? We are thinking a lot of maxi dresses/sundresses or skirts. What types of shoes for hiking and walking (plus they have to look stylish)? We know we will need a light cover for shoulders in holy places. We will be toting our luggage each day so I’d like to pack as little as I can and get the most out of our space and wardrobe. ANY advice you can give us would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Maureen Mansoor

Hi there. My sister and I are going to be in Italy from May 26 to June 12, 2017 starting in Venice then going to Florence, Rome and lastly Sorrento to take in the Amalfi Coast. Since this is kind of on the cusp of Spring and Summer we are unsure of what to take. Also I have read that shorts are not widely worn in Italy; what about a white denim skirt which is mid thigh? Also I am wondering if it is appropriate to wear distressed jeans i.e. with factory tears in the fabric in Italy? What about white denim pants or capris at that time of the year? Is it too early? Thanks so much for your help!!

I forgot to mention that we are two women in our 60’s.

Marian Fornieles

Very interesting article and very original. I went last weekend with my husband to Rome and this article was very useful!

Lauren W.

Your articles are helping me so much to “pack smart!” We are headed to Venice, Rome, and Florence in early March. Should I try to combine the winter and spring wardrobes for predicted weather in the 40-50 degree Fahrenheit range? Do you have any new items you would add to the Spring recommendations? Thanks!!

alex

Hi Lauren, the best way to plan is to keep an eye on the extended weather forecast closer to your trip. Here is a post that can offer you more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/

After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

Thanks for the feedback Dominique! Very helpful! Thanks for reading!

Annie

Hi I am from the Caribbean and will be traveling to Venice for a business conference next week. What should I pack for this trip is it ok to pack business skirt suits?

Absolutely! Whatever makes you comfortable! Especially in Venice you can be as stylish or simple as you’d like! Wear what makes you feel great! Enjoy your trip!

Marlene Cavagnuolo

We are going to Naples, tour of Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, and Capri last week of April; Sicily, tours of Siracusa and Mt Etna (not hiking) first week of May. We are staying in four star hotels and using private drivers for transportation and tours. My questions: Jacket – leather and/or lined waterproof rain jacket? Shoes for evening – booties or chunky heeled sandals? Thanks!

It can be quite rainy in that region at that time of year, so if you choose a leather jacket, I would definitely pack an umbrella! And booties may be better for the temperature! Thanks for the comment!

Amy RC

This is so helpful! I’ve been stressing over what to wear in the fall. Thanks for covering all seasons!

Jill

I’m going to central Italy in 4 weeks, and this is very helpful. Shoes are the hardest thing to find! I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Still looking for something light that doesn’t make me look dowdy. And something I can actually afford.

Glad we could help Jill! Sounds like an awesome trip! Enjoy!

mildred

Hello! Need advise on what to pack for honeymoon to Italy in November, thanks.

There are some great options in this post Mildred! Hope you found it helpful!

Janice

Hi Alex going to Sorrento on the 30th of September , should I follow summer packing ? .

The best thing would be to check the weather forecast prior to traveling in order to determine the corresponding clothing to bring. You might also like this article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Have a great trip!

Taylor

Hi there! I will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome from December 23-Jan 3 and I am trying to figure out what shoes to bring. I am leaning towards booties/heels for night time and a pair of oxfords for day time exploring the cities, but I’m not sure if oxfords will be warm enough. Also I will be celebrating my 21st birthday while I am there and was wondering what people would usually where when going out for drinks at night?

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Taylor, thanks for your question! The most important thing to remember is to find something that you feel comfortable in that makes you feel special for your birthday! I am actually going to post your question on our Facebook Page to get you more insight, so make sure to check back there so you don’t miss your questions! https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl

LOVE your posts! We’re traveling to Sorrento in mid October. I’ve planned an 8 day wardrobe around navy, white, red & gray. My shoe choices are strappy tan wedge sandals & top siders. Any other suggestions?

This sounds great 🙂 Nice work – For more ideas have a look at this post https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/

Thank you, these lists are so helpful!

You’re welcome 🙂 Glad you find them helpful!

Brittany

Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

There are a few restaurants that have this rule, however many touristy places will let you in without heels. As with other places in Europe, comfortable shoes are always a must! Take a look at this article about shoes in Italy and what other readers think of heels http://bit.ly/28aU1LI

Faith

I’m leaving for Italy in a couple of days and will be there for a few weeks and would like to know if you recommend any good, yet fashionable, walking shoes. I’m not one who usually wears a canvas-type shoe and the one pair I do own no longer fits. Thank you!

Hi Faith 🙂 It depends what kind of activities you’ll be doing i.e. hiking or city walks but this guide could point you in the right direction – http://bit.ly/1rOuabK – Have a great time in Italy and good luck with the shoe hunt!

Julia

Absolutely awesome post. I only wish it came out sooner and that some items could be purchased from Canada

Hi Julia 🙂 Glad you liked the post! We’re posting daily on the site so keep checking back in to see if there is anything helpful to you 🙂

Verbana

I agree with another poster, shorts don’t belong on this list. You will never see Italians wear shorts unless they are children. Skirts, or capris.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for the tips, I used this for packing for Italy in the March, it helped so much.

That’s awesome Demra! We’re happy to help 🙂

king

what about for men?what to wear? we will be there on the second week of april. thanks

Hi King, we do have some tips in this post for men in summer but unfortunately, we don’t offer too many tips for men since it’s a website for women. Here are a few more packing tips for Europe (for men): https://travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Claire

I going to an outdoor wedding in June and its in Sorrento. What should I wear.

Thank you Claire

Hi Claire! This article gives you good insight on the vibe of Sorrento: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Plan to dress to impress 🙂

Kristina

Hi! I am going to Florence in mid March to visit friends studying abroad. What they have told me so far is that people in Florence dress in very neutral colors and kind of simple clothes. Is this true? I want to make sure I pack accordingly and don’t stand out as an American touristy looking person lol

Hi Kristina, sounds like an awesome study abroad experience. Europeans tend to dress in more classic styles choosing quality over quantity. The main difference is that women look great in even the most basic of outfit because they maintain a well-groomed appearance, wear tailored clothing that fits their body (not too big or too tight), and focus adding accents to a strong capsule wardrobe of versatile, neutral pieces. It’s not boring but more sophisticated – casual chic.

Take a look at these posts for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-to-live-or-work-abroad/

Have a great trip!

Cindi

I have not been to Italy in 15 years! There is no rule on having to wear dress/skirt or hair coverings when going in to churches any more ? Thx

I’ve been advised that you do still have to cover your shoulders and cover your knees when visiting a church.

jill

Hi im going to tuscany in october any help on what the weathef is likely to be and what to pack would be really helpful …im comfortable in flat pumps skinny jeans loose blouses silk scarfs and blazer will these be to warm any help appreciated x

Hi Jill, the best advice is to keep an eye on the weather on http://www.bbc.com/weather/ and for extended forecasts check out http://weather.com/

Your outfit sounds great so perhaps you can start off with that as a base and work around it: add a coat, scarf, and boots if the weather’s colder or don’t wear the blazer if it’s warm. Be prepared to layer during this time of year. These tips could also help: http://goo.gl/GjjCaY I’ll also post your question on our facebook page to get more feedback for you. https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Hope this helps!

T. French

I haven’t been to Milan since 2104, but will be there next month. Sounds like skinny jeans are still the way to go, correct?

It doesn’t seem that they’re going anywhere any time soon 😉

Bushor

Hi.. We are planning to visit Italy (milan) in the Christmas holiday.. What clothes and shoes shall i bring specially we are from warm country and coming with my little kids.

Hi Bushor, you can find out best tips on packing for Italy here http://goo.gl/IaDMDl We don’t have a specific guide for Milan so I’ll also share your question on Facebook this weekend. Keep an eye out for replies from other readers: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Thanks for posting!

I was in Rome 2 weeks ago , and I have searched every website looking for a paticular Italian clothing store on ether Via Frattina ViaVia Borgognona Walking down either street from the Spanish steps it is on the left hand side of the street near the top . It is a high end store only found in Italy with women clothing. Do you happen to know the name of it?

thank you for your help.

Hi Karen, have you tried using Google Maps? Here’s is what I found:

So excited to finally go overseas and Italy has been my dream. Will be in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and even Lugano, Switzerland. Do you think it will be better to pack boots, sneakers, loafers or sandals? I’m not sure how cold my feet will be.

Hi there! Check out this guide for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ The best thing would be to check weather.com before your trip to determine the weather forecast and best packing list to follow. Hope you have fun!

Valentina Wurth

Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

Diana

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. If we are doing a lot of sightseeing, would flat-soled leather boots be appropriate? I don’t want to wear tennis shoes everyday. Amazing blog, having fun getting ideas for my shopping list!

You got it right! That seems to be the best way to go in Europe especially as the weather starts turning. Have fun!

Debbie

I had the same question about going to several cities from Venice to Rome leaving the first of May. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. I am also taking ballet flats for warmer days. Should I leave the boots or take them?

Hi Debbie. Great question! Ballet flats, boots (ankle, mid, or tall), and one additional pair sound like just the right type of shoes for Italy. I’ll also post your question on Facebook too. Check out this post on what shoes to wear in Italy: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-shoes-for-travel-to-italy-should-you-pack-your-heels/

Julie K

So happy I found your website! My dream vacation has been Italy for almost 30 years and I’m finally getting the chance to go next end of March/beginning of April! I’ll be hitting Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples over a 17 day period and I don’t know if I should pack for Spring with some warmth for Winter? And what kind of overcoat or coverup would you recommend? Will it rain a lot then?

I have so many questions and I’m so excited!!

Thanks again! Julie

Hi Julie, congrats on your dream vacation becoming a reality! These are some tips from the TFG readers on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/posts/670907509599587

Stephanie

Such a blessing that I found your blog! Going to Italy (Florence, Venice and Rome) for my 1 year wedding anniversary this upcoming December. I always overpack, and am really worried about fitting everything I need for 8 days in a carry-on luggage during the winter in Italy. Can I do it? Also, hearing about all the pickpocketing, what do you recommend for holding my money/cards, and my cell phone? Just trying to make sure I’m prepared! Thank you so much!

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for your comment and congrats on your wedding anniversary! This post will give you tips on theft proofing your gear: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-money-belts-and-anti-theft-travel-accessories/

I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get your more reader feedback 🙂

Thanks so much, Alex! I really, really appreciate it. I need all the help I can get! haha 🙂 I’ll definitely be checking back on your blog for any additional comments or help for any of my travels!

Hope you’re enjoying your current travels!

There’s tons of tips already! Check them out 🙂

Mimi

Love your website, follow you on instagram and facebook! 🙂 In two weeks I’m leaving for a 20 day trip that starts in Venice,Florence,Rome, Sicily (Palermo) and ends with four days in Paris. I tend to over pack always! (even for weekend trips!) Not sure if I should include more summer than Fall clothes? Thank you 🙂

Thank you Mimi for your compliments and following TFG 🙂 I’d say pack for Fall with a variety of clothing that you can layer. Always check the weather reports to your destinations first so you can plan as accurately as possible. I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get more feedback for you. Thanks for reading!

Cindy

Hi Alex, I didn’t see Mimi’s question on Facebook. Also, is it ok to wear a white capri in October in Italy? Thanks

Rachelle

Super helpful! I am leaving for Italy this week for a ten day trip (Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Amalfi Coast) and I think I’ll lean more toward the summer wardrobe but will add a few fall pieces just incase! I wasn’t planning to pack a pair of heels (and I am a huge heel girl)…so now I am rethinking my no heel decision. Perhaps wedges can suffice?

Hi Rachelle, I’ll post your question on FB to see what everyone thinks 🙂 Thanks!

ricki

Thank you for “What to Wear in Italy” it helped so much 😉 My suit case is packed and ready for Rome next week! I love this Travel Blog!!!!!!

Thanks Ricki! Hope you have a great trip 🙂

Christina

Love that you put this together. Doing a 17 day tour of Italy starting mid-September – should I follow more of the summer or autumn list?

Maybe a bit of both since the weather will vary based on your location.

Thank you so much fo putting these lists together – super helpful in determining what’s acceptable by geography. Traveling to Italy mid-September for just over two weeks – should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn if our itinerary includes Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Como?

You should plan for both since the weather will vary based on your location – just plan to layer 🙂

Thank you so much for putting these together. I always struggle with what to pack based on culture and geography. Headed to Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice, Como and Milan) on the 10th of September – any packing suggestions? Should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn at that point?

Michelle

Incredibly stylish! Will there also be a Scotland series?

Yes, it’s a little delayed but it’s coming 🙂

Penny Sadler

Great job! Thank you for confirming too, in the south, don’t show too much skin. I often see tourists in short shorts, tank tops, too much skin. I don’t even pack shorts for the south. Can’t wait to return to Italy this fall!

Happy that Jacopo was able to give us info straight from the source 🙂

Clare

This could not have come at a better time for me! I’m packing for Italy as I write this! Might throw in an extra pair of heels…

Happy the timing was right 🙂
