Essex Tech's final touches: Tour highlights state-of-art school's signature features

DANVERS — The main building of the $135 million Essex Technical High measures three football fields in length.

It’s just one of several buildings built on a brand-new campus along Maple Street as part of the creation of a new regional technical school.

“We are at 90 percent completion,” said Superintendent Dan O’Connell. “We are on time, we are on budget for $135 million, and we plan on being here, bringing in all the furniture late June and early July.”

When the 1,440-student school opens in the fall, it will house the programs of state-owned Essex Agricultural and Technical School, which draws students from across the county; the 16-district North Shore Technical High in Middleton; and Peabody’s high school vocational programs. The school is being built on the campus of Essex Aggie in the Hathorne section of town.

Once complete, the school will house four separate academies and 24 technical areas. The agricultural buildings are already occupied by Essex Aggie students, and new automotive and collision-repair buildings have sprung up at the back of the school. The campus will also have a lighted stadium with a running track and an artificial turf field.

During a tour Tuesday, workers were putting the finishing touches on the project amid newly installed floors, walls and carpets. One could see the metal studs of interior walls for the HVAC area, one of four new programs at the school. The tour also took in the sight and smell of the freshly varnished floor of the Essex Tech gym, which already sports the school’s mascot, the hawk.

Getting his first look at the school was former Senate Majority Leader Fred Berry, who said he pushed for the merger so the North Shore could have a state-of-the-art technical school similar to other regions in the state. He anticipated a long waiting list for enrollment once people see the facility.

“I’m thrilled; I’m thrilled,” said Berry of his first impression of the school. “I had a vision of this, and this vision is being fulfilled. I thought it was very important to get a first-class vocational school for my district. We had none. Every place in the commonwealth had theirs. I had to fight for mine. Now, I cannot be happier.”

Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt also came along. Peabody is new to the regional vocational school district and will have one of the largest enrollments of any community in the new school.

“It’s exciting to think about the type of learning that is going to take place,” Bettencourt said, “and it’s going to benefit the students of Peabody for many years to come.”

O’Connell said many spaces in the school are designed to have more than one function. Bump-out areas in corridors can also be used as learning spaces. Walls between classrooms can be taken down or moved as space needs change.

“The classrooms are all connected in tubes, so you have little knuckles of classrooms that have a soundproof wall between them that can be separated,” O’Connell said. “None of the walls between classrooms are (load) carrying walls, so 10 to 15 years from now, we have to redesign anything, it’s just knocking out a metal studded wall with soundproofing.”

Since the school is so large, officials created a main cafeteria and two dining areas lit by a soaring wall of glass and steel. The smaller dining areas are also “flexible learning spaces” where lectures can be held. Technology to run presentations are built into the walls, and cafeteria furniture can be turned into classroom furniture.

This kind of flexibility also extends to science labs, O’Connell said.

One of the signature features is a circular restaurant, which is suspended over the main cafeteria. The plan is to have the restaurant open four days a week for breakfast and lunch, and for private functions and business meetings, all served by culinary arts students.

The school’s cosmetology lab is adjacent to the front entrance for public access. The large cafeteria can also serve as a lecture hall or instructional space, O’Connell said.

Essex Tech secures $850K in federal funding for campus, program expansion

DANVERS — Major upgrades to Gallant Hall and a planned expansion on campus for a program for veterans at Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School got a big boost with the news of $850,000 in federal funding.

The school announced earlier this week it was receiving the federal funding to expand opportunities for workforce development and veterans-focused programs through infrastructure projects on campus. The money is part of a more than $13 million investment package secured by Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Salem.

The building expansion project at the school includes an upgrade of Gallant Hall HVAC systems, windows, doors, and the Alumni Gymnasium bathroom, in addition to the construction of a new modular building connected to the Angell at Essex clinic.

This new space would house a veteran service animal training center for Company2Heroes, a nonprofit service dog training organization that specializes in dogs working with combat veterans who are diagnosed with traumatic injuries.

“We have been working on expanding access to vocational programming due to our waitlisted students and trying to get as many students the opportunity for vocational education as possible,” Essex Tech Superintendent Heidi Riccio said. “As a result, we’ve been looking at competitive grant funding.

“We also have a bond for the animal science building and a private donation of $750,000 for the renovation of Gallant Hall, which along with the $850,000 from Congressman Moulton, will allow us to upgrade the HVAC systems, a new boiler, and a bathroom at Alumni Hall.”

In 2018, Essex Tech started working with Company2Heroes, an organization that collaborates with day students and is on campus on Thursday evenings training veterans and support animals to assist veterans affected by PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, or military sexual trauma. Training is free of charge for veterans thanks to grant funding from Gov. Maura Healey.

“We’re extremely appreciative that we were considered for this funding and to be able to expand our campus and really keep it open to our greater school community for adult education programming,” Riccio said.

Dr Feelgood reveal Facebook list of stolen items

Rock band Dr Feelgood have revealed an extensive list of £20,000 of equipment stolen from their tour van.

The theft took place outside bassist Phil Mitchell's home in Hockley, Essex between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

He said his bass guitar bought when he was just 17 had been taken.

Mitchell, 71, said: "It leaves you feeling a bit violated when it happens at your home."

An investigation has been launched by Essex Police and a spokesperson said: "The van contained a number of musical instruments and other equipment with a total reported cost of about £20,000.

"Including the van and associated work carried out on it, the total loss to the victim is about £70,000".

Among the items stolen was a Fender Telecaster guitar, made in Japan, and a Fender Precision Bass 1970 with the serial number 295309.

Amplifiers, drum equipment and other kit has all been listed by the band on Facebook .

Mitchell said they posted the list on social media after fans suggested to look out for any of the items surfacing online.

He said: "We live in hope" but added, "I don't expect to see it again. I think it is probably long gone."

The popular group, formed in 1971, have had to rent a new van and equipment ahead of their Germany tour next week.

The Mercedes Sprinter van had been used by the band for getting to gigs for the past decade.

"We had invested a lot of money into it and it had been kitted out for touring with comfortable seats and electricity inside - it even has a fridge in it," Mitchell added.

Dr Feelgood reunited with their instruments after stolen van is recovered

Veteran British rockers Dr Feelgood are to be reunited with thousands of pounds worth of musical equipment that was inside a stolen van after police tracked it down.

Essex Police said the grey Mercedes Sprinter tour van, belonging to the rhythm and blues act, was stolen in Hockley between 6pm on Monday and midday the following day.

The force said officers were called to a disturbance in Tolleshunt D’Arcy, about 24 miles away, late on Wednesday evening and found the Mercedes van on false registration plates.

There was evidence of a chop shop – a garage where stolen vehicles are dismantled or given false identities – and there were a number of other vehicles there, police said.

Officers established that the van was the stolen vehicle, and the band’s equipment was found nearby.

Police officers said the band members have been made aware and collection of the musical equipment is being arranged “very soon”.

The force said that no arrests have been made and officers are continuing to explore a number of targeted lines of inquiry.

Police Constable Paul Gerrish, of Essex Police’s stolen vehicle intelligence unit, said: “I know that the band are due to start a tour of Germany and without us finding the kit, I know it would have severely affected their plans.

“It was the presence of the equipment, which was clearly of value, which allowed us to make the quick connection.

“We know that it is quite often the personal possessions in a vehicle, which cannot be replaced, which are far more valuable to people than the vehicle itself so I’m really happy that we’ll be able to reunite the equipment with the band.”

Dr Feelgood, whose line-up has changed over the years, formed in the 1970s in Canvey Island, Essex.

Guitarist Wilko Johnson, who found fame with the band before a four-decade solo career, died in 2022.

How to Watch Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Film Before Her New Album Drops Tomorrow

A new era is about to begin. Taylor Swift's newest album The Tortured Poets Department will be released tomorrow. And if you want to celebrate and relive all the eras that came before, you can now watch Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film exclusively on Disney Plus. The Disney Plus version of the film includes new performances, including  Cardigan , and says goodbye to a few fan favorites.

The first version of the Eras Tour movie hit theaters late last year, and became the  highest-grossing concert film  ever, as reported by Variety. Then it was available to rent on demand. Now Disney Plus' version of the film promises new performances, and says goodbye to some fan favorites.

What's new in the Disney Plus version of the film?

Disney Plus' version of the flick will feature Swift's performance of Cardigan, which was previously cut from the theatrical release of the movie, and four additional acoustic songs. You can check out a preview of the Cardigan performance here , in an exclusive early clip on Apple's App Store. Swift had also released the names of the four new acoustic performances leading up to Thursday's release on ABC's  Good Morning America (also owned by Disney). Now that the film has officially dropped, we know that the four acoustic songs featured in the Disney Plus version of the film are I Can See You, Death By A Thousand Cuts, You Are in Love and Maroon (which is accompanied by another performance of You're On Your Own Kid). It's important to note that these songs are included at the end of the film, after the credits. 

Swift  recorded  six acoustic songs during filming in August, and the performances of Our Song and You're on Your Own, Kid made both the theatrical and on-demand rental versions of the film. Now, all six performances have found their way into the concert flick, which is an extra treat for super fans like ourselves. 

Songs excluded from the Disney Plus cut of the movie include Long Live, The Archer, Wildest Dreams and No Body, No Crime. 

The Eras Tour concert film hits streaming on March 14. 

Disney Plus is already home to another Swift exclusive,  Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions , a series that chronicles the making of her 2020 album Folklore. Swift's other documentaries and concert films have been available sporadically on various streaming services, including  Netflix  and Prime Video. 

Release time for the Eras Tour film in the US and abroad

The film will land on Disney Plus on Thursday, March 14 at 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET)  in all territories except Turkey, where it will be released on April 3. Swift announced that the film would be available earlier on Monday, along with a new trailer. 

Pricing for Disney Plus starts at $8 per month in the US, but if you live in Canada, the platform costs CA$12 a month. UK fans can get the service for either £5 with ads, or £8 a month without ads. You can subscribe for a year and save 16%. In Australia, fans get Disney Plus for AU$14 per month.
