HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of a band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

To spread word of free tuition and boost low-income enrollment, a college goes on a Western Slope high school tour

western university tours

In Colorado, fewer than half of high school graduates go on to college, well below the national average . In recent years, universities across the state have stepped up efforts to change that by offering free tuition to low-income students.

Colorado Mesa University is one of the latest. As the fall semester gets closer, university President John Marshall is touring mostly rural high schools across the Western Slope. In communities like Nucla, Craig and Cedaredge, he’s sharing this message: College is possible.

In a town of 10,000 people, Rifle High School is surrounded by bright-green cow pastures and distant mountains. On a recent morning, Marshall spoke to an auditorium filled with many students who could become the first college graduates in their family.

“One of the things we’re really focused on is not just how to get you to college but help you be successful once you get there,” he told the group, with a student on hand to provide translation in Spanish.

Teens are notoriously hard to read, but as Marshall wrapped up his presentation, several students waited to talk to him more in depth about a new university program called the CMU Promise. Starting this fall, it will give free tuition to Western Slope students whose families earn $65,000 or less a year.

Even as a little kid, 17-year-old senior Randy Martinez Gomez knew he wanted to be an inventor and that going to college would help build a solid foundation for his future. But college didn’t always feel attainable.

“The amount of money is often really scary,” he said. “You start thinking, 'Is that a toll you want to put on your family?’”

Martinez Gomez’s parents are Mexican immigrants who didn't get a chance for higher education, but they’ve been saving money to help pay for their son’s college for years.

Martinez Gomez says the free tuition and the school’s aid package gives him a lot of hope.

Junior Laura Gonzalez, also 17, said student debt is a constant topic of conversation in the media — and in her own life.

“I can name about three people that are in student debt right now that are close to me and are still paying it off to this day, even though it's been years — even before I was born — that they went to college,” she said.

She wants to help people stuck in that debt when she becomes a state representative one day.

Gonzalez, whose family is also from Mexico, knows that many children of immigrants don’t apply to college because they worry immigration officials will use government forms against their family who may not have documentation.

“This is the opportunity that they're giving you because they want you to go to college,” she said, “and it's not because they want to take your parents away.”

Gonzalez hopes the CMU Promise program will help build trust and start a conversation that will bring in more students with backgrounds like hers.

Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

The Waa-Mu Show will take you away

One woman leans toward another as she sings

  • School of Communication
  • Student Experience

In its 93 years of existence, Northwestern’s Waa-Mu Show has evolved continuously. What began as the University’s Women’s Athletic Association and Men’s Union joining forces for a musical revue eventually morphed into a full-length, original musical penned by students.

This year, the show once again forays into uncharted territory with a change: Rather than one musical, it is now three shorter musicals. “ Taken Away: A Musical Trilogy ” opens Friday, April 26, at Cahn Auditorium.

The show begins with “The Art of the Heist,” a supernatural tale that follows an artist who must steal back the last portrait of her late lover, followed by “Stolen Thunder,” a reimagining of Greek myth portraying the struggle for power between Zeus and Athena. It closes with “A Bird’s Song,” which centers on a whimsical forest-surrounded town outside reality, where melodies have transformational consequences.

With their varied settings, plots and musical styles, the works offer a glimpse of the many forms musicals can take. However, as the show’s title suggests, they are united by the common theme of something being taken away, with additional smaller motifs throughout the works in the form of details like set pieces and musical themes. The same cast members also act in all three shows.

Buttressing the change to the structure of the show are changes to the creative process behind it. This year, students began work on the show sooner, pitching and workshopping ideas in the fall so they could begin refining and revising in the winter, beginning spring rehearsals from a strong foundation.

It’s really what theater should be, which is experimental, fun, moving and shocking.”

Alongside the schedule change, faculty mentorship has been integral to every stage of this year’s show-writing process. At the center of these efforts are Tommy Rapley, the show’s director and an assistant professor of instruction in the School of Communication’s theatre program, and Ryan T. Nelson, a long-time Waa-Mu music supervisor and an associate professor of instruction in the same department. The new approach allows students to engage more deeply with the work and each other, Nelson said.

“It's about connecting the classroom and the practical performance of theater and engaging students and faculty,” he said.

Anand Choudhary, a second-year psychology major in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences who is in the show’s cast for the second year, said this year’s process has placed a new emphasis on the educational aspect of The Waa-Mu Show.

“I've learned so much of how to become a better actor, how to connect with the script, how to connect with my character and how to have fun doing it, too,” Choudhary said.

For Sadie Fridley, the Waa-Mu Show has always been a chance to experience the magic of watching ideas and “what-ifs” transform into a full production on the stage in Cahn. The third-year student in the School of Communication’s theatre program has been part of the show’s cast and music team every year since she arrived at Northwestern. This year, she said, students have been able to dig deep into the emotional hearts of their shows.

“I think that we've pushed a lot of boundaries this year, in staging, in set, in music, in story, and I'm really excited for the audience to feel things that they've never felt at a Waa-Mu show before,” Fridley said.

Emerson Steady, who pitched what became “The Art of the Heist” and is a writer and co-script supervisor for the piece, said the change to the format is also a chance to embrace a spirit of experimentation that is dominant in the professional musical theater world.

“I really am excited for the audience to come in with an open mind and get a glimpse of what musical theater can be, all the potential,” Steady said.

The third-year student in the School of Communication’s theatre program was also a writer for last year’s production, and they’re eager to see how subsequent Waa-Mu Shows develop.

“I hope it continues to evolve,” they said. “I hope that it never gets nailed down to be one particular thing.”

Whatever the future holds, the Waa-Mu cast and crew are looking forward to when the curtain rises on the latest iteration of the show this weekend, and they hope the audience is, too.

“It's going to be a wild ride,” Nelson said. “I think it's going to be quite historic. It's really what theater should be, which is experimental, fun, moving and shocking.”
