Harris to embark on a seven-state campaign blitz with her VP pick

Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump.

It will be a critical week for Harris, who is rushing to introduce herself to voters with just three months until Election Day. It will also be the first time she will appear with her yet-to-be-announced running mate.

Starting Tuesday, Harris will campaign across seven swing states over five days, one of the heaviest weeks of campaign-related travel in the general election.

Her team has vetted six contenders to be her running mate: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Walz, Shapiro and Kelly each met separately with Harris on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the meetings.

Harris is set to appear alongside her running mate for the first time Tuesday in Philadelphia , where the pair will kick off the cross-country tour.

Her travel swing is a stark contrast to the pace of Trump and President Joe Biden. Trump has delivered remarks in 10 states since the June 27 debate, while Biden traveled to campaign stops in eight states during the final 24 days of his candidacy. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time.

Harris will visit five states that she and Biden flipped blue in 2020: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. She will also make stops in North Carolina, which Biden lost by a slim margin, and Nevada, where Democrats won narrowly.

The trip highlights the generational gap between Harris compared with Biden and Trump, Democratic allies said.

Biden’s candidacy was consistently plagued by voter concerns about his age, and his final weeks as the presumptive nominee were punctuated by a stream of congressional Democrats urging him to pass the torch to a new generation.

“Age really does matter” when it comes to a candidate’s ability to commit to long campaign trips, said Amanda Renteria, who was the national political director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

Harris, 59, is a generation younger than Trump, 78, and Biden, 81.

In 2020, Biden was the oldest presidential winner in history. If elected, Trump would be the oldest sitting president by the end of his term.

“It is amazing what candidates can do when they’re traveling around, and you don’t know what time it is, and you don’t know what day it is, but everyone’s in it,” she said. “And you can only sustain that for so long. And when you’re at the age of Trump, I don’t know how you keep up with that.”

Trump is scheduled this week to hold a rally Friday and deliver remarks at a dinner in Montana, a state he won in 2020 with 56.9% of the vote. He is also scheduled to hold a fundraiser Saturday in Colorado, which Biden won by a similar margin in 2020. Neither state is considered to be a swing state.

Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips.

"In this cycle, President Trump has by far visited more battleground states, held more rallies, held more fundraisers, done more interviews and engaged with local reporters," Cheung said of Trump, who launched his campaign more than a year and a half before Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

"Kamala Harris can’t even give a simple media interview since she was anointed the Democrat nominee," he continued. Harris has not held a sit-down media interview since Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, though she has answered journalists' questions in media gaggles.

In the days after Biden's widely panned June debate in Georgia, his campaign was in damage control mode. Biden spoke at a North Carolina rally and traveled to fundraisers in New York, New Jersey and Virginia before he held a rally in Wisconsin.

His next campaign trips were to Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada, the last of which was cut short when he contracted Covid. Days later, he dropped out of the race.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Abhi Rahman said that if Biden had stayed in the race, "I'm sure that there would have been blitzes like this, as well."

But now "there's definitely a lot of desire to make sure that the vice president is defining herself and her VP before Republicans get a chance to," Rahman said. "So the timing of this definitely goes with that."

When Biden was the presumptive nominee, the Trump campaign aimed many of its attacks at his cognitive ability, leaning into voters' concerns about his age. But with Harris' being a generation younger than Trump, Republicans have had to pivot their approach.

"I think she's making a point of her relative youth and vitality," said Bill Galston, a Brookings Institution fellow and official in President Bill Clinton's administration. "It's a point that she doesn't have to talk about because she's just showing it."

Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

"I think the fact that she's willing and able to do this many events in a small amount of time is something that can make a real difference, especially when we're less than a hundred days out" from the election, Cavalier said.

Traveling for campaign events can create more opportunities for local media coverage, accelerate fundraising and identify potential future volunteers, said Eric Jaye, a Democratic consultant at Storefront Political Media, a campaign consulting firm. But most important, candidates are activating thousands of "micro-influencers" at rallies, he said.

"They're all holding up their phones, and they're all publishers," he said, adding that when rallygoers post pictures of themselves with a candidate, "that will go out to their networks, which is an endorsement for their networks."

"If you can get 10,000 people to share that they trust Kamala Harris, that has an impact as a form of media and communication in and of itself," Jaye said. "So essentially these are conventions of micro-influencers."

Already, the Harris campaign has touted a groundswell of volunteer support, noting in a memo released Saturday that over the previous 12 days, volunteers had placed 2.3 million phone calls and knocked on 172,000 doors.

The seven-state tour “shows that she has a ton of energy,” Renteria said. “It shows that her campaign is ready to go and is thinking through things and able to execute well. So it’s super exciting.”

Snoop Dogg Has the Funniest Reaction to Seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre

The special NBC Olympic correspondent found his Revolutionary Cap while led through the empty halls of the world's most famous museum.

road dog tours

It was a Night at the Museum for special NBC Olympic correspondent Snoop Dogg , and a history lesson unlike most.

As the 2024 Summer Olympic Games continue in Paris, Snoop was given a private, after-hours tour of the Louvre, home to some of the world’s finest art, as seen in a Thursday, August 1, 2024, promo clip on TikTok by NBC Olympics . The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper was guided through the grandiose empty wings to do some “snooping around,” avoiding the tens of thousands of tourists who visit the museum daily.

Snoop’s first stop? One of the world’s most valuable paintings: Leonardo Da Vinci’s early 1500s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa.

Against the backdrop of French accordion music, Snoop let viewers in as he gazed upon the oil painting, studying the exhibit from a straight-on point of view.

“I just found out I was Mona Lisa’s twin brother, Tony Lisa,” Snoop joked.

Snoop moved around the protective rail to see if the portrait’s eyes followed, to which the musician said, “She smile real hard when I stand on this side.”

Decked out in his patriotic red, white, and blue to represent the U.S. Teams , Snoop and his male private tour guide walked along the empty halls, marveling at numerous priceless showpieces hanging on the walls.

“Is that somebody’s head getting chopped off?” Snoop pointed in passing.

Snoop admires other show-stopping pieces

There was much to see in the one-minute-plus video, but the guide emphasized the importance of getting a close-up of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a cherished marble sculpture created during the Hellenistic era.

The sight was perhaps befitting for the Olympic Games since the piece is also called the Niké of Samothrace, named after the ancient Greek goddess of victory. The headless statue was not only the muse for the big-name shoe brand, but the female subject’s wings also reportedly inspired the Nike company’s famous swoosh logo.

“That was made 2000 years ago?” Snoop wondered.

Snoop Dogg holds an umbrealla at the 2024 Olympics

“2,200 years ago,” the tour guide clarified.

“I love this,” as Snoop stood in awe. “This is beautiful.”

The art expert informed Snoop that one of its wings had been “nipped and tucked,” urging the singer to guess which one was original and which wasn’t. Snoop inspected the monument, which stands eminently at the top of the Louvre’s master staircase, and settled that the right wing was only a replica.

“Bravo!” the tour guide remarked. “Bravo.”

A painting of Cupid and Snoop’s revolutionary cap

Snoop and the guide continued through the gallery, passing by one particular painting that caught Snoop’s attention.

“It’s two ladies in the bed,” Snoop commented. “One of them flying away.”

The Frenchman leaned in, hiding his mouth with his hand, and said, “That’s not a lady.”

“That ain’t a lady?”

Upon a closer inspection, Snoop realized the naked, winged subject leaving a woman asleep in the bed was actually a male. In fact, the being was a depiction of Cupid, the Roman god of love.

The painting itself was an 1817 piece of art by famous French painter François-Edouard Picot, representing the second-century story of Cupid and Psyche .

“Cupid?” Snoop said. “I knew it was somebody I knew.”

Last, Snoop stopped at one of the world’s most famous French pieces, Liberty Leading the People , an 1830 oil painting portraying the July Revolution. By Romantic-era French artist Eugène Delacroix, it depicts a bare-breasted woman waving what is now France’s national flag atop the men who lost their lives during the 1830 revolution. In the backdrop, visitors can see the historic Notre-Dame, a treasured part of Paris, and a centerpiece at the 2024 Summer Games Opening Ceremony .

“The cap that this woman is wearing is called the Revolutionary Cap,” the tour guide explained.

“She got on what I got on right now,” Snoop noted of his blue wrap headpiece.

“You’re wearing your Revolutionary Cap, Snoop Dogg!”

“The revolution will be televised,” said the sports commentator.

The painting specifically shows the woman wearing a phryge , which is the inspiration for the Paris Olympics mascot.

“Rather than an animal, our mascots represent an ideal,” Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet previously said in a statement about the figure. “Since it is familiar to us and appears on our stamps and the pediments of our town halls, it also represents French identity and spirit.”

Clifford the Big Red Dog visits Jacksonville's Tiger Academy on road safety tour

Portrait of Beth Reese Cravey

About 100 students at Tiger Academy in Northwest Jacksonville recently met Clifford the Big Red Dog, known from the children's book series of the same name, and got to check out his latest adventure, the newly released "Clifford Takes a Ride."

The First Coast YMCA charter school was part of a four-city book and safety tour hosted by Mercedes-Benz USA and Safe Kids Worldwide. The automotive company, the nonprofit and Scholastic , an educational publishing company, collaborated to publish a Clifford book about passenger and pedestrian road safety that includes life-saving car and safety tips.

"Mercedes-Benz has a longstanding commitment to safety and innovation," said Dimitris Psillakis, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "We are proud to reinforce these vital topics with a young audience through this fun and educational story and have the chance to directly interact with kids across the country."

The tour brings "these important lessons to life," he said.

About 30,000 free copies of the book were distributed during the tour.

The Tiger Academy event began with a book reading and Clifford's appearance and also included interactive safety education stations led by Safe Kids. The stations featured passenger, pedestrian and bike safety information, as well as a bike rodeo, helmet fittings and pedestrian crossing activities.

"Each year, many child passengers are tragically lost or injured in motor vehicle crashes, but ongoing safety measures and awareness campaigns are making a positive impact," said Torine Creppy, president of Safe Kids Worldwide. "We know teaching children and families how to be safe in and around vehicles can save lives."

This is a really great idea for a private group. Though pricey, we had plenty of beer- but no food until some trail mix at stop 3. Plan accordingly, thank goodness we brought snacks. The 3 breweries we went to were a great mix of large to small, all with different vibes and types of beer which was great. The three stops were Phoenix Ale Brewery, Wren House, and The Shop. The main point holding me back from a better rating is the transportation. The van was TIGHT for seating 14 (and we only had 13), I mean we were practically on top of each other, and the AC was not working in 100 degree PHX heat. Everyone was uncomfortable. Phoenix Ale Brewery was the largest facility and had a great variety of beer, but heads up no AC. They also gave us pint glasses which everyone was excited about. Wren House was so cozy we instantly felt at home and started playing jenga at the table. This was the best presentation of beer as everyone got a 4-beer flight. Our best stop on the tour was at The Shop (formerly Cartel Brewery) because a brewery employee came in the back with us and really gave us some personal insight to the company and the process. She was so personable, and everyone appreciated the hospitality they offered us at this stop.

Review for a Saturday evening tour: - lucky no one else signed up! Hubs and I had a great time with Joshua. - as it's just 2 of us, your went by fast and took 2.5 hours. - visited 3 breweries: Phoenix, Cartel and Wren House. - we had beer tours in San Diego, Mexico, Petaluma area. The Phoenix breweries were on par with the rest. Really awesome to know! - would definitely go again next time I'm in Phoenix!

Cartel brewery - one of my favourites on the tour! The cold brew coffee beer was fabulous!

Went to make reservation online, for Phoenix tour, immediately sent me to book a Seattle tour...emailed them- no answer, called them-no answer. Went to where it stated they start the tour at Angels Trumpet, the workers had no clue what I was talking about. Not sure if they exist anymore. Angels Trumpet was very good though!! Drinks & food!

What a fantastic outfit this company is. Recently expanded from the very successful Seattle Brewery Tours, the Phoenix Brewery Tours offer an extremely educational, fun, and (most importantly!) delicious brewery experience! We got to check out three local breweries, talk to brew masters, taste various brews, and generally geek out on fantastic beers for three hours. What more could you ask?!! Our tour guide was friendly, very well educated on brewing, and the others on the tour were a blast! I couldn't recommend this company more. We had a great experience and can't wait for Phoenix to discover the gem we've just gained in Road Dog's Phoenix Brewery Tours!

What a great beer tour! Jenna arrived early, with a smile & friendly demeanor, and we were off. We started off with a tasting flight at a brewery, sitting inside where the creative process happens. At each destination, it was obvious that Jenna has invested in building relationships with the various brew masters and other staff. They knew her & seemed happy to welcome us and, I believe, this is why the breweries allowed us the opportunity to see the " behind the scenes" of their processes. Best of all, Jenna is the one that showed us the inner workings of the brewery-she knows her stuff! This was a great opportunity to find a couple of breweries that we would not have found on our own Make sure to ask for Jenna to lead your tour!! Oh yeah.. and we received a t-shirt & beer glass too!!

My wife and I came down to Phoenix for the first vacation we had in 3 years without our daughter, who is 3. Our pick up location was the Old Town Tavern in Scottsdale (great local bar). We arrived at the pick up location 30 minutes prior to our tour starting, which was 6:00 PM. Road Dog Tours never showed up so I called Road Dog Tours about this. They did call me back fairly quickly and I was told the tour guide never received information about picking my wife and I up. They did send an apology email and text message, which I did appreciate and ensured me this would never happen again. I would have loved to give the tour a higher rating if I got to experience it, however I was very impressed with the customer service.

It was a great little adventure for a Valentine's day! Our guide was very very knowledgeable and nice, we visited 3 breweries and we were very pleased with each one of them. Comfortable transportation, on time! the tour is even educational. Hopefully I will do this again in Seattle!

Jenna was an awesome tour guide! She picked some of the best breweries around town that had not only fantastic beers but also chill environments and great people! She was incredibly personable and truly enjoyed showing us around! I would recommend anyone traveling to Phoenix to take a tour with Jenna and Road dogs!

We went on a tour, to celebrate my buddy's b-day and had a blast! Our tour guide/driver, Jenna, was awesome! She is very knowledgable and easy going. She made sure we were treated like kings at all our stops. Especially the first one, Phoenix Ale Brewery where we received a preview of an upcoming beer(straight from the tank). The last stop, The Shop, had some of the best beers we tried. It was nice cozy tap room, where we received a nice tour of the back. I definitely recommend this tour for out of town visitors or AZ residents. I will be taking more of my friends and family on this tour, when they come into town. I can't really express on here how much of a good time we had.

An amazing experience for my girlfriend and I! A very personable and fun tour. We got to get in on the ground floor, see the brewing process and machines while tasting the beer, which was delicious. Josh, our guide, was extremely fun and knowledgeable, explaining everything we saw and answered all our questions. Road Dog Tours was an awesome tour that I think you should try for yourself!

Ukraine Launches Rare Cross-Border Ground Assault Into Russia

Troops and armored fighting vehicles crossed into Russia’s western Kursk region on Tuesday, according to Moscow and independent analysts. Ukrainian officials have not commented.

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

Ukraine has launched a surprise ground assault into Russia with troops and armored vehicles, Russian officials and independent military analysts said on Wednesday, in what could be one of the largest Ukrainian incursions onto Russian soil in more than two years of war.

The assault, which began on Tuesday in the Kursk region of western Russia, has resulted in heavy fighting, according to images from the battlefield verified by independent military analysts and Russian statements.

Videos verified by The New York Times showed armored vehicles being struck several miles inside Russia , and Moscow said it had rushed troops and fighter jets to respond. Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov, the commander of Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, said the advance of Ukrainian troops had been halted on Wednesday evening, while pro-Kremlin military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had captured several settlements near the border.

“Alarming news is coming from the Kursk region for the second day,” Igor Artamonov, the governor of the Russian region of Lipetsk, which borders the Kursk region, said on Wednesday. “The Kyiv regime is attacking our borders.”

By Wednesday evening, Ukrainian troops appeared to have advanced several miles into Russian territory, one analyst said, and Russian officials said the fighting was continuing.

The various reports could not be independently verified, and the Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the assault. Two spokesmen for the Ukrainian Army did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This is not the first time that Ukraine has staged ground attacks across the border into Russia. But while previous assaults were carried out by armed groups of Russian exiles backed by Kyiv’s army, the attack on Tuesday appeared to have directly involved Ukrainian troops, according to Pasi Paroinen of the Black Bird Group , which analyzes footage from the battlefield.

Mr. Paroinen said that a few hundred Ukrainian troops, supported by armored vehicles, had most likely crossed the border on the first day of the attack, and that more soldiers had arrived on the second day. General Gerasimov said that up to 1,000 Ukrainian troops took part in the cross-border attack, a figure that could not be confirmed.

Military analysts said the attack could be an attempt to divert Russian units from the front lines, thus relieving the pressure on Ukrainian troops struggling to contain Russian advances . But they added that the Russian Army had ample reserves of troops to commit to the fight and that the attack risked further stretching Ukraine’s already outnumbered forces.

“Operationally and strategically, this attack makes absolutely zero sense,” Mr. Paroinen said. “This seems like a gross waste of men and resources badly needed elsewhere.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attack started around 8 a.m. on Tuesday with Ukraine’s 22nd Mechanized Brigade attacking border units in the Kursk region, backed by some 30 tanks and armored fighting vehicles. Mr. Paroinen reported “multiple sightings” of Stryker armored fighting vehicles, which the United States sent to Ukraine last year .

Rybar, a prominent Russian military blogger, said on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops had crossed the border at different points, along at least two lines of attack. He said Ukraine had captured three settlements on the first line, which runs north from the Russian village of Nikolayevo-Darino. On the second line of attack, toward the town of Sudzha, Russian troops were “almost completely surrounded” in the village of Oleshnya, Rybar said.

Mr. Paroinen said that Ukrainian troops appeared to have advanced up to five miles north of Nikolayevo-Darino and that they were pushing toward Sudzha.

Ukrainian shelling in the area of the assault killed five civilians and wounded 24 others , according to the Russian state news agency TASS. Alexei Smirnov , the acting governor of the Kursk region, said thousands of residents had evacuated the area of the fighting, most of them by their own means.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Wednesday that he would meet with his country’s security services to coordinate a military response to the attacks and that instructions had been given to assist residents of the Kursk region.

Although Ukrainian officials have not officially commented on the attack, Andriy Kovalenko, a senior official focused on Russian disinformation operations, appeared to acknowledge it, writing on Telegram : “Russian soldiers are lying about the controllability of the situation in the Kursk region. Russia does not control the border.”

On Wednesday, Volodymyr Artyukh , the Ukrainian governor of the Sumy region, which sits across from Russia’s Kursk region, ordered the evacuation of some 6,000 residents amid the fighting.

Ukrainian shelling and bombings have in the past targeted Russia’s border regions of Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk, but cross-border attacks have been rare. The first such attacks reported took place in May of last year , carried out by anti-Kremlin Russian fighters aligned with Ukraine. A similar ground attack took place this March .

On both occasions, the attacks were seen as an attempt to unnerve the Russian public and undermine Mr. Putin’s efforts to insulate them from the war.

But Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, wrote on social media that those attacks “had little effect on the fighting” in Ukraine and “did not have serious domestic political ramifications for Putin.”

He and other military experts said that if the aim of this week’s attack was to draw Russian troops away from other parts of the front, it had little chance of succeeding.

“Russia already has greater forces/conventional capabilities in the area, better command and control, and it has conscript units that can be deployed, which are not used in Ukraine,” Mr. Lee said. “It is unlikely this operation will force Russia to pull significant forces from Ukraine.”

Sanjana Varghese contributed reporting from London, and Ivan Nechepurenko from Tbilisi, Georgia.

News and Analysis

Russian forces, even as they scramble to respond to the surprise incursion from northern Ukraine into Russia, are pummeling Ukrainian forces  and using aerial bombs along the front lines in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian military officials said.

The local government in the Russian region of Kursk declared a state of emergency as Kyiv shifted tactics with a surprise attack into Russian territory  that caught Moscow off guard and opened a new front in the 30-month war.

Ukraine has “made a lot of progress” on battling corruption, “but there’s work to do” before its economy can achieve its full potential , Penny Pritzker, the U.S. special representative for Ukraine’s economic recovery, said.

Summer Camps During War: As the once carefree summers of Ukrainian childhood and young adulthood are forever altered by war, traditional camps have taken on a more patriotic tone .

Ukraine’s Sports in Tatters : Facilities have been battered. Coaches are in short supply. Children have moved abroad. Ukraine faces a long hard road toward  rebuilding its athletic programs.

A ‘Love Crisis’ for Ukrainians: While the pursuit of love might seem secondary to dealing with the horrors and privations of the war, many Ukrainians say they need romantic relationships to help them cope .
