Vagabond Journey – Around The World Travel

Top Attractions of the Amalfi Coast

Going to the south of Italy? Be sure to go here.

Italy coast

It goes without saying that every nook and corner of the Italian Peninsula has its charms. But when you hear the name of the Amalfi Coast, a fantastic panorama of multi-colored towns and picturesque cliffs and mountains immediately pops before your eyes. So it’s no surprise that Amalfi Coast tours continue to be a hot favorite for thousands of people all over the world, including Hollywood celebrities who choose to vacation to this paradise every summer. Although the coast is widely known for its posh restaurants and luxury hotels, it has a lot in store to overwhelm even the most sophisticated traveler.

Towns to fall in love with

Those who have never visited the Amalfi Coast before should consider starting their Southern Italy tour from exploring the charming historic towns. The first point on the route which is definitely worth the ride is Amalfi, the main town of this fascinating region. Its spirit captivates from the very first minutes, but what really stuns each and every person visiting this place is the Duomo di Amalfi, a 9th-century Roman Catholic cathedral which conserves the ancient spirit and has a majestic appearance.

Another excellent stop to put on your must-travel list is Spoleto. Apart from breathtaking 12-14th-century sights, any traveler is welcome to take part in the annual summer Festival dei Due Mondi which is a great opportunity to get the taste of national Italian music, theatre and dance performances.

However, your tour to Italy and to the Amalfi Coast in particular won’t be complete without visiting legendary Positano. Being located on a high cliff, the village represents a dramatic colorful spot seen from the sea. Its narrow cozy streets, multi-colored Mediterranean houses, the crystal blue colors of the sea and the dizzying heights will take your breath away.

Furthermore, the Amalfi Coast has many more destinations to choose from such as Sorrento that overlooks the waters of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius; Ravello, a remarkable place for relaxation and relishing the best views on the coast; and, of course, Salerno, the largest town of the region that represents an extraordinary mixture of the old and the modern.

The Ferriere Valley

Even the most inveterate travelers can sometimes get tired of the hustle and bustle of crowded Italian towns but the Amalfi Coast has a unique place that can become a real breath of fresh air and a shelter from the Italian sun’s heat. The Ferriere Valley is a natural reserve in the province of Salerno which is appreciated by those who enjoy hiking and staying outdoors. Once you climb a rocky path through the luscious forest, stunning natural scenery of beautiful waterfalls opens before your eyes.

The Emerald Cave

The Emerald Cave, also known as Grotta dello Smeraldo, is one more natural wonder set in the charming bay of Conca dei Marini that’s worth visiting. Often called a gem of the Amalfi, the place has a special vibe: inside the cave is filled with stalactites, stalagmites and mysterious green light which creates a fairy tale atmosphere. There’s no doubt that visiting this natural masterpiece will become an unforgettable experience, so keep in mind that the recommended time for visiting is early afternoon as it’s the best time to enjoy the whole palette of colors.

Sirenuse Islands

Another place in the surroundings of the Amalfi, shrouded in myths, is the Sirenusas archipelago that is made up of little islands located between the Isle of Capri and southwest of Positano. This small island chain is named after the mythological Sirens who supposedly lived there many years ago. Moreover, the Sirenusas islands of Gallo Lungo, Isca, La Castelluccia, Vetara and La Rotonda are uninhabited which adds some special charm and mysteriousness to the board trip around them. By the way, the surrounding waters are perfect for snorkelling so you can also be able to savor the amazing scenery of local marine life.

Delicious must-taste local food

The Amalfi Coast remains one of the top destinations of Italy not only due to its stunning landscapes but because of its delicious national cuisine as well. Each Italian region is fiercely proud of their local dishes and the Amalfi is not an exception, so when exploring the beauty of the region, make sure to make stops at some restaurants and dedicate a night to relishing the best typical delicacies.

What you should know is that this coast boasts one of the best fish cuisine in the world that’s why it would be a serious mistake to miss the opportunity to try the famous ‘scialatielli ai frutti di mare’, fresh pasta with seafood; shrimp and citrus ‘risotto’ or salted sauce from the best Italian anchovies ‘colatura’.

Still keeping Italian cheese making tradition, the region abounds in variety of cheese so trying local ricotta, fiordilatte and provola with the scent of herbs is another must.

Sweet teeth also won’t be disappointed at all as Amalfi is swarming with talented pastry chefs, ready to lavish you with their delicious desserts. The air of the coast smells like the sea, freshness and … lemons! This sunny fruit is used in many local recipes, especially in desserts. The most famous one is perhaps ‘delizie al limone’, a mouth-watering sponge cake filled with lemon cream which won’t leave anyone indifferent.

And, of course, any meal can’t dispense without the classic of classics, the world famous lemon liqueur ‘Limoncello’ which remains the calling card of the Amalfi and whole Italy.

All in all, the Amalfi Coast is a perfect destination for a memorable adventure. Plus, if you’re planning a full-fledged Italy getaway, the sun-kissed Amalfi Coast fits perfectly as an extension of Tuscany tours. Italy is an amazing country that offers a myriad of attractions and makes you fall in love with it from first sight, so are you ready to hit the road?

Amalfi Coast Cultural Walking Tour

Image Gallery

On a launch approaching the Amalfi Coast at the start of our tours, you face a startling sight— like oversized rock climbers, gleaming villas cling with no visible foothold to the sheer cliffs. You have to ask yourself how…why? But when you swing open the shutters in your cliffside hotel room, the jaw-dropping view is all the answer you need. Situated on the "ankle" of the Italian boot, Amalfi has a balmy climate. Orange trees line village streets. Breezy seaside footpaths around Positano encourage a nice slow pace perfect for absorbing the atmosphere. We also settle in for two mellow days on the glorious island of Capri—one of our favorite places in Italy. We make time for Pompeii, and unlike most visitors, you'll see Amalfi in the best way—in the company of an Italian friend who knows the ins and outs of life on the edge of the sea. See Sicily, too! Our Sicily tour starts the day after Amalfi ends. Pair up the two for an amazing Italian vacation. Call 800.200.3887 for details.

  • Trace ancient footsteps in Pompeii, during a private, archeologist-led exploration of the city’s excavation
  • Experience Capri as only the locals do, with two leisurely overnights in a luxurious hotel overlooking Roman emperor Tiberius’ villa and the sparkling blue sea
  • Hike to a 14th-century monastery atop Monte Solaro for Capri’s most iconic vista: the striking Faraglioni rising from the sea
  • Walk through scenic fields of terraced wildflowers past wild goats
  • Follow a centuries-old footpath with lemon trees and waterfalls then stroll through the gardens of Villa Cimbrone
  • Walk along the aptly named “Path of the Gods” trail with its stupendous coastal views
  • Visit a tiny limoncello factory to see how the local lemon liquor is made
  • From Positano, follow the coast to a pizza-making instruction overlooking the sea

Trip Overview

Our tour starts with transportation from Rome Termini train station. We’ll travel together to Naples and have a short walk in Naples, followed by a pizza dinner in the birthplace of pizza!

On our first full day, we’ll see more of Naples center, and then take the ferry to Capri. On Day 3, we’ll ascent the summit of the island for gorgeous views.

Day 4 will be spent exploring the center of Capri and its shops, with an optional walk to see the rock formations. On Day 5, we will experience nature and small villages and an agriturismo farm.

Day 6 will take us to the beautiful medieval village of Ravello, and seeing waterfalls and a magnificent duomo. On Day 7 we’ll visit the Greek temples at Paestum, and have a cooking class.

On Day 8 we’ll have a hike and some time at the beach. Day 9 brings us to the ruins of a medieval village, with beautiful views of the Cilento Mountains.

Our final day we will transfer back to Rome after breakfast.

Ibis Styles Napoli Garibaldi Il Tramanto Anacapri Hotel BB Locanda del Generale Agriturismo Al Sentiero

Try to arrive in Rome early in the day on Sunday. If you are already in Rome, we will departing Termini rail station between 3-4 pm. We will give you instructions on how to reach Termini rail station from the airport. There are some vegan options in Termini station, and you’ll have time for a quick lunch before boarding our train to Naples. Upon arrival in Naples we’ll drop our bags at the hotel, and our local guide will take us for a short walk around and for a casually delicious pizza marinara, the original pizza which just happens to be vegan!

Monday, our first full day, we will have a walking tour of chaotic Naples. Indeed, it’s not a city for everyone, but it should be experienced once, and we’ll have a local guide to make things easier for us. Its food is some of the best in Italy, and its setting on the Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius in the distance, is quite stunning. We’ll then take a ferry and taxi to the village of Anacapri, on the isle of Capri. Anacapri is a sleepy, timeless, authentic village lying on the slopes of Mount Solaro, filled with artisan workshops. After checking into our accommodations, we’ll relax and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant with a fabulous sunset view.

Meals Included Day 1: Dinner Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3 affords us a moderately challenging hike from the hotel to the summit of Mount Solaro for 360 degree views of the sea and the Capri cliffs. We’ll then walk down to the village for a picnic lunch. The afternoon gives another opportunity for a hike, up through the coastline to Punta Carena lighthouse, one of the oldest in Europe. Those interested can swim in some of the most pristine waters of the island. We’ll enjoy an aperitivo while watching the sunset, and then take a local bus back to our hotel, after eating dinner close by.

Day 4 will have a walk to see Capri’s stunning natural rock formations. We’ll then meet for lunch at a restaurant with a beautiful terrace and a spectacular view over the sea and rocks. We’ll then walk down to the main port and take the ferry to Amalfi, a town in a dramatic natural setting below steep cliffs. After checking into our hotel, dinner will be at a local family agriturismo farm.

Meals Included Day 3: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Day 4: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Departing from the hotel on Day 5, we will hike through the Fjord of Furore, an arched stone bridge crossing a striking gorge, into nature and villages, and onto the Path of the Gods, a once-in-a-lifetime hike affording some of the most exquisite panoramas in Italy. You’ll walk on ancient mule paths of varying difficulties and will witness dazzling views of cliffs, beaches, and the Mediterranean Sea below. Our lunch spot will be at another Agriturismo with organic vegetables, fruit, and homemade wine. Dinner will be at yet another farm.

Day 6 has us leaving early for Ravello, the city of music and with many buildings from the medieval period. We’ll have some free time there, and then we’ll walk through the Ferriere Valley, an easy downhill 3 hours walk on a wonderful path along a river. We’ll wind through beautiful forests, springs, small waterfalls, and will see ancient paper mills from the 12th century. Lunch will be on the way, and we’ll finish in Amalfi, at its magnificent duomo. After some free time in Amalfi, we’ll transfer back to our hotel and have dinner at an agriturismo.

Meals Included Day 5: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Day 6: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

On Day 7 we’ll leave early for Salerno and Paestum, with a short stop to see the Greek temples, dating from about 500 BC. This is one of the most beautiful archeological sites in Italy. We’ll then have a master class with Giovanna Voria, Ambassador of the Mediterranean Diet. We’ll feast on a homemade lunch of organic local products. We’ll then transfer to Galdo village, where we’ll check into our agriturismo, and will have dinner there.

Day 8 will include a hike from Galdo to Pollica, after which there will be relaxation time at a beach club. There will be some free time in the village of Acciaroli, a charming seaside hamlet where many of its residents live to be over 100 years old. Dinner will be back at the agriturismo for a homemade meal with local vegan wine.

Meals Included Day 7: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Day 8: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Our last full day will take us to San Severino, a medieval village of ruins, overlooking a wonderful view of the Cilento Mountains. A Nonna of the typical village will cook homemade lunch with vegetables and beans from local farmers, served at a local bar with local people. We will then trek to Palinuro Cape after lunch, and if the sea is calm, then take a boat to a blue grotto. We’ll then transfer to our agriturismo for our farewell dinner.

On Day 10 we’ll take the fast train to Rome (about 2 hours) after breakfast. If you are flying back to the US, you’ll most likely need to spend the night in Rome, to catch a morning flight the next day.

Meals Included Day 9: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Day 10: Breakfast

Amount of walking: 3-10 miles per day

Please plan to fly into Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) by 12:00 pm the first day. We will give you instructions on how to reach Rome Termini train station. We will meet there and take the train together to Naples.

You may want to depart from Naples International Airport (NAP), or take the train back to Rome or another destination in Italy. If you are flying from Rome with a morning flight, you will most likely need to spend the night in Rome after the tour, before you fly. We can help you book a hotel.

  • Hike along the Path of the Gods along the spectacular Sentiero degli Dei – one of the most scenic trails in the world – in picturesque Amalfi.
  • Explore the island of Capri – once a lavish retreat for Roman emperors – and see the mighty cliff faces, secluded coves, grottos and sweeping Mediterranean scenery.
  • Discover the ancient Roman town of Pompeii, frozen in time under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Explore the vast ruins, including the House of the Faun and the Temple of Apollo, then ascend the volcano and explore hidden sulphonic vents with a specialist volcanology guide.
  • Make the most of your time in Italy – from Naples to Amalfi, why not indulge in all the traditional pizzas and homemade pastas you can eat and all the classic wines and aperitifs that come before, after and in between your meals.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio. Donations help them regenerate 22 hectares of unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in Italy. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This Multi-Active trip requires a good level of fitness, due to the varied terrain and potentially hot temperatures. Many of the hiking days involve steep hills and lots of steps that you'll need to be able to walk up and down. Walking times vary between three and six hours a day, but the rewards are worth every step.
  • Summer temperatures around the Amalfi Coast can be extreme (up to 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same sex. If you’d prefer not to share, a single-room supplement is bookable at an additional charge, subject to availability. Please ask your booking agent for more details.

Benvenuto! Welcome to Italy. Your adventure begins in Naples, the capital of the Campania region, with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, maybe head out and discover some of Naples' impressive architecture and monuments, many of which date back to the Spanish rule of the 16th and 17th centuries. You could also check out the Royal Palace of Naples or head through the grand plaza to Museo di Capodimonte. After the meeting, ask your leader for dinner recommendations and maybe share an authentic Neapolitan pizza while you get to know each other.

  • Hotel in Naples (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If your trip starts on a Thursday, Day 5 and Day 7 will be swapped to allow a visit to the Villa Jovis in Capri (closed on Mondays).

After a leisurely breakfast, board your private minibus to the mighty Vesuvius. Walk around the rim of Vesuvius' crater and watch the sulphuric gases and steam emerging from the gravel. Then, take a scenic drive to the Agerola high plain. Along the way, you'll see views over the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast. After, head to the Pompeii archaeological site. Finely preserved, these ruins give you an authentic image of what daily life was like in an old Roman city with villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets. Walk along the chariot-marked streets that sat under the shadow of Vesuvius, until the fatal eruption in AD79. Visit the Roman Forum and Basilica, nearby temples, public baths and the tiny Odeon that was created for music recitals.

  • Hotel in Agerola (1 night)
  • Pompeii - Archaeological Site
  • Guided Hike along Vesuvius' Crater Rim and Summit
  • Pompeii - Guided walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours. Your walking time will be approximately 3 hours or 4 km.

Many people prefer to wander the ruins of Pompei at their own pace, so a cultural guide is not included. If you wish to have a fully guided tour, your leader can arrange a local guide at an extra cost.

Today is a free day for you to relax in Agerola or take on some of the area's walking trails. You can head to the viewpoint of Punto Panoramico for views over the Amalfi Coast – from here, descend through a spectacular landscape, which overlooks the Isle of Capri and the densely forested mountains of Cilento National Park. Your path leads you through Mediterranean landscapes covered in vineyards, chestnut trees, oaks, shrubs and flowers. Spot the many old ruins dotted along the hillsides as you go. In spring, you can even smell fresh Italian herbs as you walk past steeples of limestone rocks through lush vineyards. This afternoon, maybe visit the village of Bomerano and grab some lunch, an aperitif or a glass of the local limoncello.

  • Punto Panoramico Hike - Free
  • Bomerano Limoncello Tasting - EUR5
  • Orrido di Pino Hike - Free

This morning, you’ll take on what has become one of Italy's most famous hiking trails – the Sentiero degli Dei (Footpath of the Gods) – which will bring you all the way to Positano. This path winds its way through unique scenery and boasts unrivalled views of the coast. Walk through forests and fields of wildflowers, past ancient stone huts and beside sheer walls of granite. Glimpse local farmers tending their crops by hoe and elbow grease, herds of goats feeding beside the trail beside their shepherds and teams of workmen commuting by mule. By late morning, you’ll reach Vallone di Grarelle, then continue to the hamlet of Nocelle – a picturesque village above Positano. Walk through the village to the Montepertuso Crossing – a deep gorge with limestone walls. From Montepertuso you’ll walk down the old steps, through olive groves and vineyards, to Positano. Continue to Amalfi by boat and take in the gorgeous scenery from a different viewpoint.

  • Hotel in Minori (Amalfi Coast) (1 night)
  • Sentiero degli Dei (Footpath of the Gods)
  • Boat Cruise Positano to Amalfi

Your walking time today will be approximately 5 to 6 hours or 7 to 10 km. Your luggage will be transferred for you, between Agerola and Amalfi, so all you need to take is your day pack.

Today, you’ll explore the gorgeous Isle of Capri, where Roman emperors used to holiday. Take a ferry along the beautiful coastline, passing the islands of mythical sirens from Homer's Odyssey. As you approach, you’ll be welcomed by cliffs and crashing blue seas (don’t forget your camera!). When you arrive in Capri, head out for a walking tour of all the local sights, then take a circuit walk passing Villa Jovis (the ruins of the most impressive Roman villa on the island, once home to Emperor Tiberius), a historic monastery and the winding alleyways of the village of Capri. Follow the untouched coastline and many impressive grottos (take some time to dip your feet in the water – the best way to cool off). Later this afternoon, take the ferry back to Minori for the night.

  • Villa Jovis Archaeological Site
  • Boat Ride to Isle of Capri
  • Capri Coastal Walk

Your walking time today will be approximately 4 hours or 10 km. The walk through Capri can be extended, depending on the group’s ability and desires.

This morning, you’ll hike to the village of Pontone through the Scala di Pontone (the Stairway of Pontone). This staircase is part of the network of paths that crisscross the Amalfi Coast, providing access between the coastal towns and the hillside villages. Once in Pontone, continue through the Valle del Dragone (Dragon Valley), characterised by its expansive views of the Mediterranean Sea. This valley is known for its dramatic landscapes, including steep cliffs, deep gorges and waterfalls. The lush vegetation, including olive groves, lemon orchards and Mediterranean scrub, adds to the beauty of the area. The name is said to come from the winding shape of the valley, which resembles a dragon's tail. After some time to refuel, head back to Amalfi and hit the beach for a kayaking experience along the coastline. Paddle along the coast towards Santacroce – a small but gorgeous beach where you can grab an aperitif before paddling back.

  • Hotel in Amalfi (1 night)
  • Kayaking to Santacroce Beach
  • Valley of the Dragon Nature Hike
  • Scala di Pontone hike

Your walking time today will be approximately 3 hours or 6 km. The kayaking activity is weather-dependent and may be cancelled in adverse weather conditions.

This morning’s hike from Minori to Ravello offers gorgeous views of the Amalfi Coast and you’ll be able to explore the small villages that dot the way. Begin your ascent towards Ravello, situated high above the coastline. This scenic trail winds its way through terraced lemon groves, offering panoramic views of the coastline below. When you arrive in Ravello, take some time to explore the hilltop village. Visit the historic sites such of Villa Cimbrone, wander through the streets and enjoy the views from the gardens overlooking the coast. From Villa Cimbrone, you'll start your descent towards the town of Amalfi. Take the Via Santa Chiara – a scenic path that winds its way down the hillside. After a day of exploring, retrace your steps along the steep mule track back to Amalfi. Tonight, why not find a spot with a view and tuck into a bowl of pasta to reward your efforts.

  • Villa Cimbrone

Your walking time today will be approximately 4 to 5 hours or 9 to 12 km.

After breakfast this morning, your adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to stay in the area for longer, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time. You might like to board one of the ferries that sail from Amalfi/Minori to Salerno or Naples. Alternatively, local SITA buses run to Sorrento, Salerno or Naples, where you can catch onward rail connections.

Italy has a good internal transport system with many options to get around the country. Do note that transport strikes do affect the network from time to time which usually means less options and long delays.

Cheap flights can be found linking many of the major cities in Italy.

The most popular way of travelling around  Italy is by train.

Most long-distance and many regional trains are operated by Trenitalia which operates an excellent website in multiple languages. There is also an app which you can download which stores your bookings.

Italy operates three different types of trains.

High Speed Trains.

These trains are called one of the following Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, or Eurostar Italia and link all the major Italian cities.

The high speed trains are fast (up to 300 kms per hour) stop at limited stations, are clean, efficient and generally run on time.

Reservation are required when travelling on fast trains. Tickets can be purchased on line or at the station.

These are the most expensive trains to travel on in Italy.

Inter City Trains

Inter City trains also link most Italian cities

Intercity trains (IC) are slower, stop at more stations and are less reliable that the fast trains however are considerably cheaper.

It is advisable to reserve seats on intercity trains particularly in high season.

Regional Trains

Regional trains meander from town to town, are much slower than the other two train types stop at every station and often are delayed.

A good option if you are just going a short distance.

International Trains

Eurocity trains links Italy with other European cities.

As with the fast trains reservations are a must and booking can be made on-line or at the station.

Buying Tickets

There are a few ways you can buy tickets for train travel in Italy.

NOTE: If you have a paper ticket you MUST validate it at one of the yellow validation machines BEFORE you get on the train, if you do not you may be fined.

  • On-line. If you have purchased your ticket online you will receive have an e-ticket (PNR number) which can be  stored on your smart device and shown to the conductor who will issue you a receipt. If you have a e-ticket you will not need to validate it at the station.
  • At a vending machine at the train station. The machines are in multiple languages – touch the British flag icon for English.
  • At a ticket booth at the train station.

Long Distance Bus Travel

While cheaper long distance buses are less popular than train. If you wish to travl long didtance by bus FlixBus is a good option.

  • FliXBUS Connects many towns and cities in Italy, in addition to providing international services travelling to/from multiple countries.

Traveling to Italy

Italy, a country synonymous with romance, history, and exquisite cuisine, captivates travelers with its timeless beauty and cultural treasures. From the ancient ruins of Rome to the Renaissance art of Florence and the picturesque canals of Venice, Italy offers a diverse range of experiences for every traveler. Whether you’re exploring historic landmarks, lounging on sun-kissed beaches, or indulging in delectable Italian cuisine, a trip to Italy promises unforgettable memories and experiences.

How to Plan a Trip to Italy

When planning a trip to Italy, consider the diverse range of experiences the country has to offer and prioritize your interests accordingly. Begin by selecting which regions and cities you’d like to visit, taking into account factors such as transportation, accommodation, and budget. Italy’s extensive rail network makes it easy to travel between cities, while domestic flights and rental cars offer additional flexibility.

Research accommodation options, from luxury hotels to boutique guesthouses and budget-friendly hostels, and book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Consider staying in centrally located accommodations to maximize your time exploring Italy’s attractions and landmarks.

When it comes to dining, Italy is a culinary paradise, known for its fresh, flavorful ingredients and regional specialties. Be sure to sample local dishes like pasta, pizza, gelato, and espresso, and don’t forget to indulge in wine tasting experiences in Italy’s renowned wine regions.

Lastly, familiarize yourself with Italian customs and etiquette to ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. Learn a few basic Italian phrases to communicate with locals and immerse yourself in the rich culture and hospitality of Italy.

Italian cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its simplicity, freshness, and bold flavors. From hearty pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas to creamy risottos and succulent seafood, Italian food offers a mouthwatering array of options to satisfy every palate.

In Rome, savor classic Roman dishes like carbonara, cacio e pepe, and supplì (fried rice balls), while in Florence, indulge in the city’s famous bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak) and ribollita (Tuscan vegetable soup). Coastal regions like Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast are renowned for their fresh seafood dishes, while the culinary traditions of Sicily offer a fusion of Italian, Arab, and Mediterranean flavors.

No visit to Italy is complete without indulging in gelato, the country’s beloved frozen treat. Sample artisanal gelaterias and savor flavors like pistachio, stracciatella, and tiramisu, or opt for a traditional Italian espresso to accompany your sweet treat.

Culture and Religion

Italy boasts a rich cultural heritage shaped by centuries of history, art, and architecture. From ancient Roman ruins and medieval castles to Renaissance masterpieces and Baroque churches, Italy’s cultural landmarks are a testament to its storied past.

Religion plays a significant role in Italian culture, with Catholicism being the predominant faith. Italy is home to some of the world’s most renowned religious sites, including the Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel in Rome, as well as the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi and the Basilica of San Marco in Venice.

Italian culture is also celebrated for its contributions to the arts, literature, music, and fashion. From the works of Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to the operas of composers like Verdi and Puccini, Italy has long been a center of creativity and innovation.

Today, Italy continues to embrace its cultural traditions while also embracing modern influences from around the world. Visitors to Italy can immerse themselves in the country’s rich artistic legacy, explore its vibrant cultural scene, and experience the warmth and hospitality of its people.

Safety and Dangers

Italy is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, with low rates of violent crime. However, like any popular tourist destination, it’s essential to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas where pickpocketing and petty theft can occur.

Be cautious of scams targeting tourists, such as fake petitions, street vendors selling counterfeit goods, and unauthorized tour guides. It’s best to avoid engaging with unsolicited approaches and to keep your valuables secure at all times.

While Italy’s cities are generally safe, some areas, particularly in southern Italy and urban neighborhoods, may have higher crime rates. It’s advisable to research your destination beforehand and to exercise caution, especially at night.

Italy also experiences occasional demonstrations and protests, which can disrupt travel plans and pose safety risks. Stay informed about current events and avoid large gatherings or areas where demonstrations are taking place.

In terms of health and safety, Italy has excellent medical facilities, but it’s advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical treatment in case of emergencies. Tap water is generally safe to drink in Italy, but bottled water is readily available and recommended for travelers.

Natural dangers in Italy are relatively rare, but travelers should be aware of potential hazards such as earthquakes in regions like central Italy and volcanic activity in areas like Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. Additionally, Italy’s mountainous terrain and coastal regions can pose risks such as avalanches, landslides, and rip currents, so it’s essential to heed warning signs and safety advisories when exploring outdoor areas.

Amalfikysten, 5 dage

DENNE TUR ER MED APP

Vandreture

  • Du har base to dejlige steder, bl.a.

Overnatning i Scala. (-/-/A).

Snart har du udsigt over havet, snart går du zig-zag ad stierne. Besøg i flere pragtfulde landsbyer, bl.a. Overnatning i Scala. Vandring ca. 4-5 timer, 500 m op/500 m ned. (M/-/A).

Overnatning i San Lazzaro. Vandring ca. 5 timer, 550 m op/ 200 m ned. (M/-/A).

Overnatning i San Lazzaro. Vandring 3-6 timer (valgfrit), 500 m op/ 500 m ned eller 200 m op/ 200 m ned.(M/-/A).

Meet the VagaHQ Team

Meet the awesome crew who power our small-group tours of Ireland

Could you join our team? We are currently recruiting for Adventure Tours Driver Guides

Meet The VagaHQ Team

Founder and Managing Director of Vagabond (but really wants to be Bear Grylls when he grows up). Rob is originally from Scotland but has lived in Ireland for many happy years with his wife Amy and 3 kids. Rob started Vagabond in 2002 after travelling in Africa. He noticed that an active adventure tour would be a great way for visitors to experience Ireland.

Rob is an outdoor enthusiast — hiking, mountain biking, sailing and wilderness camping. He also a keen amateur historian with an MA in Modern History. Rob is dedicated to making tourism more responsible and sustainable; he speaks regularly on the topic.

Border between sections

Vagabond’s Marketing Director — Dictator?! — boasts years of experience with blue-chip brands. Originally from Dublin, Amy met Rob at university in Scotland, from where she holds an MA in Psychology.

Amy is a keen outdoor enthusiast, a really fast runner and qualified sailing instructor, not to mention a mother of three kids — four, if you include Rob. She has travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and Africa. Her favourite travel experiences include safari in Africa, Italy’s Amalfi coast and the southwest of Ireland.

Our Transport & Operations Manager is the type of guy that people tend to look up to. Not least because Russ stands 6’5’’ in his socks. He's a fully trained ambulance medic and is handy with a chainsaw (Russ holds a qualification in horticulture).

Having travelled extensively through Europe, North America and Australia, Russ joined Vagabond in 2012 to share his passion for, and knowledge of, his country. Russ’s calm and professional style made his guests feel welcome while leading tours. Now he's calm and professional while managing our team of VagaGuides and fleet of Mercedes tour vehicles !

Back in 2012, our Group Accounts Manager decided she had had enough of mucking about every day. Gillian paused her archaeology career to become Vagabond HQ’s first permanent recruit beyond Rob and Amy. Over 12 years later, Gillian’s attention to detail and tenacity in seeing projects through to the end is still as strong as ever. These skills are a legacy from her previous habit of excavating ancient treasures.

Life at Vagabond is — disappointingly — not quite as mucky. Besides managing company accounts, Gillian takes care of our fantastic hotel partners and, in her own time, keeps an ever-growing flock of rescue hens and ducks.

Vagabond really is the sweet spot for our Sales & Marketing Manager . Before Deirdre became a key member of our team, she kept things sweet for a chocolate manufacturer, a sugar company and a soda distributor. For desserts, Deirdre had a stint at a toilet paper manufacturer — make of that what you will!

Outside of VagaHQ, Deirdre is happiest spending time with family at home in Wexford, exploring Ireland and walking her cockapoo, who loves being the centre of attention.

Vagabond's Content & SEO Manager is a bit of a tree-hugger. Unsurprising when you consider that Derry's name means 'oak' in Irish. Before settling into Vagabond life back in 2018, Derry studied History & Politics in Dublin, spent a year learning Japanese in Tokyo and completed his MSc at City University London.

Derry has tried out an equally eclectic range of jobs: writing a book about revolution; wine harvest in Oregon; selling sushi in London; picking kiwis in New Zealand; even cleaning toilets on a car ferry!

Our Sales & Reservations Supervisor will be familiar to both past and future Vagabond guests. That's because John is an experienced former VagaGuide . A legend on the road in bygone seasons, John has enhanced VagaHQ with his passion for Ireland and his knowledge of the travel industry.

That's not to mention his cheeky humour, his masterly table tennis skills and his way with words. In fact, John loves words so much that he has also achieved a BA in Journalism and harbours secret ambitions to become a Nobel prize-winning author.

Travel makes the world go round for Group Accounts Assistant, Dee.  Travel... And her beloved Boxer pooch, Darcy. And, yes, you would be correct in assuming he is named after Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice. As well as a keen reader, Dee is a proud Wicklow native who has travelled the length and breadth of Ireland. The Kingdom of Kerry — favourite of many a Vagabond guest — is Dee's home away from home.

Her background in hospitality and spa therapy will come in useful here at Vagabond. Our male VagaGuides keep a strict waxing routine. They just LOVE to be pampered.

Don't mess with our Digital Marketing Executive, who is — unofficially — the most second most competitive team member at VagaHQ (after Rob) . That's a result of Shauna having previously captained her home county of Wicklow in the Gaelic sport of camogie.

Nowadays, Shauna expertly calls the shots across our social media content and digital advertising campaigns. She loves travelling, both in Ireland and further afield. Oh yes and Shauna also boasts a spiralling addiction to garlic mayo; a must-try condiment during your tour of Ireland.

Our Product Development & Operations Executive is another welcome VagaGuide graduate. Corkman Michael can still occasionally be found behind the wheel of a VagaTron  — but spends most of his time now perfecting our tour itineraries and dreaming up new ones!

Michael is a seasoned world traveller. Not only has he visited Honduras, New Zealand, Spain, South Asia and Nepal, Michael has worked as a sound engineer, plays guitar, enjoys live Irish music and, in his own words, "loves to ramble on to anybody that will listen." Michael's surname is Stout... But please, no Guinness jokes. Hailing from Cork, Michael prefers Murphy’s (obviously).

Our Operations Executive is a real renaissance woman. Ciara is not only one of our most experienced former tour guides, she also boasts qualifications in Film Production and First Aid as well as instruction in adventure sports like rock climbing, kayaking, snorkeling and sailing.

She is an ex-member of the Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team, has volunteered with the National Parks & Wildlife Service, has worked on a farm and can drive a tractor. Is that not enough? She also bakes extremely creative and delicious cakes for all of our office birthday parties!

Our Sustainability Executive is part of the endangered species of redheads.  Of course, the other reason Ed the Red is so-called is because she's a Cork native — red is the county colour.

With years of experience leading Vagabond & Driftwood tour groups, a burning passion for the natural world, a quick wit and a laid back manner, Ed was the perfect candidate to further our sustainability mission, renew our B Corp certification and continue leading the charge for responsible tourism in Ireland.

Our Sales & Reservations Executive loves camping and the great Irish outdoors.  Danielle is based in wonderful Wexford but is on a mission to explore all 32 counties of Ireland, with tent and sleeping bag in hand. Her partner, 3 kids and Golden Labrador are helping her make this dream come true!

Ask Danielle anything about Ireland! She boasts significant experience in Irish tourism with past roles working at hotels and spas. Her favourite part of Ireland is the spectacular southwest corner: Cork and Kerry.

Our Training & Guide Liaison has worked as a mountaineering instructor for over 20 years across the world.  Tim's mission is to ensure all of our VagaGuides are highly-trained experts in mountain hiking and safe driving. Oh yes, and to make sure they love jumping in bogs and telling silly stories, just like him.

Tim Trivia: he trained as a luthier, making classical guitars, mandolins, mandolas and bouzoukis. When he was leading tours, one of Tim's guests suggested he looked a bit like George Clooney. A bit.

Cork-born and bred, our Marketing Executive knows a thing or two about Ireland.  Brian is also a VagaGuide, an award-winning travel blogger and a published Lonely Planet author.

But this fella is also a true ramblin’ man, having lived in 17 different countries around the globe and travelled to many dozens more. Vegan Brian is now based at VagaHQ, ready to sink his teeth into all questions big or small about exploring Ireland!

Local Newtown resident, Paige, is the newest recruit to our friendly Sales & Reservations team. Paige enjoys the simpler things in life. A few rounds of Bingo on a Friday night. Listening to country music. Snuggling her King Charles Spaniel

Paige would like to take this opportunity to state that her doggy's name being the same as her colleague — Brian — is a coincidence, plain and simple. Any rumours to the contrary are pure speculation.
