The moisture-wicking, breathable back panel keeps you cool and doesn’t trap sweat, plus the built-in belt is made from flexible elastic that is designed for a 27- to 41-inch waist, but can stretch to accommodate a bit more. We found the waist clip easy to adjust and very secure, which is a major factor in choosing a reliable money belt. It also felt soft against our skin throughout the day thanks to the padded mesh backing. If you’re worried about it being seen through your clothes, opt for looser garments or only toss in the essentials.

When purchasing a travel wallet, make sure it has enough slots for all of your travel needs. If you’re a frequent international flier, you might want to prioritize space for a passport, or something large enough to accommodate various currencies (and a coin pouch for countries in which coins are commonly used). If you’re looking for something more minimalist, you might want to opt for a wallet with a detachable card case as well, so that you can truly pare down to the basics. 

Durability is key

A wallet that falls apart mid-trip is not just annoying, but potentially disastrous — especially if it’s housing your passport. Investing in a piece that’s well-made and ideally water-resistant is of the utmost importance for protecting your belongings. Leather (or high-quality vegan leather) and ripstop nylon are some of the sturdiest options for keeping your things secure. 

Prioritize safety features

While zip closures aren’t necessary, they do offer the highest protection, as they secure your belongings from slipping out. Ideally, look for a wallet with at least one zippered pocket, to tuck away any small valuables. Hidden pockets for cards or cash are also important to help avoid flashing how much cash you’re carrying while you’re out and about. Passports can be easily battered: Thin and light, they get worn down if you're a frequent traveler who shoves them into jeans pockets or carry-on backpacks that are filled to the brim.

I was never a fan of passport holders and cases until I found myself in situations when I needed one. I took a few international flights where I couldn't use mobile boarding passes and had to carry paper ones. I remembered what a pain it can be to keep track of your passport, boarding pass, and landing cards, plus other notes and documents you might need when you're throwing everything loose into a backpack pocket.

I decided to look into travel wallets and passport covers, thinking I can streamline everything if I could keep all the travel documents for a given flight in one holder; I'd also be able to protect my passport. I knew that money belts and travel wallets that go around the neck are popular, but I had no interest in one of those. I wanted a sleek, clean-looking wallet.

After researching different options and testing a handful, the Bellroy Travel Wallet was my consistent go-to. I've also included other great travel wallet options if Bellroy's wares aren't for you. Read on to see which of our picks is the best for your travel wallet needs.

If you're a regular reader of Insider Reviews, chances are you're already familiar with Bellroy — after all, the company makes our favorite wallets. The Australian brand has a smart, minimalist, and functional design philosophy. It also uses ethically-sourced materials and has a great manufacturing process to produce high-quality gear.

What I love about Bellroy's travel wallet is that it holds everything. It has room for all of the travel documents you might need over the course of a multi-stop international trip, plus cash, credit cards, a SIM card, and even a pen.

At first glance, the wallet looks like an oversized bifold, opening just like an everyday wallet. One side has room for your passport, with a dedicated pocket that takes up that whole side. The other side has credit card slots — either two or four, depending on which edition of the wallet you choose — positioned vertically so you just drop the cards in. The wallet also has an open-top pocket like a traditional bill compartment, but it's divided into two sections.

There are a few more "hidden" card slots and a sim-card holder within the inner cash compartment, as well as my favorite feature of this wallet: a tiny pen, which is kept tucked away right in the middle so that you can fill out landing cards and jot any quick notes you need.

Available in a few colors, the wallet is big enough to hold just about any currency, and I like to keep a little bit in one of the sections of the large cash/document pocket. The other section is great for holding boarding passes, custom cards, and any other travel documents you might need to have handy. I prefer putting these in the outermost section so that they don't crease when folded. I use the inside part for cash — You can put cash in both sections, using the divider to keep different currencies separate.

In theory, Bellroy intends the travel wallet to be your everyday wallet on the road, something you can carry with your cards, cash, passport, and everything else you need for a day of exploring. I think it's a little big for that. I can certainly fit in in a back pocket or jacket when I'm in the airport, but it's big enough that I would be worried about theft walking around a city with it. 

The handmade Mr. Lentz Slim Passport Wallet is timeless and built to last.

Pros : Slim, rugged, handmade, holds the essentials

Cons : Needs to be broken in, brass rivets may not appeal to everyone

The Mr. Lentz brand is run by one person — Evan Lentz — who makes all of his products by hand in his own workshop. Lentz built the brand with a "modern cowboy" feel, designed to evoke days of hard work on the windswept plains, and his online shops reflect that with old-west images and icons.

Mr. Lentz makes wallets, bags, and other accessories using durable, rugged, and time-proven materials like full-grain leather, brass, and wood. Lentz's passport wallet is a typical example of this style.

The wallet is much more scaled-down than the Bellroy Travel Wallet making it great for those who just want to ensure some protection for their passport without adding a ton of bulk. A solid piece of leather makes a bifold that opens like a book. The right-side has a pocket for your passport, which is a little tight and only meant to fit the back cover of the passport. That way, the passport can be read without removing it from the wallet. You can just hand the whole package to the customs agent. Once the wallet breaks in a bit, you can fit the whole closed passport in that pocket.

The other side of the wallet has two card slots that can hold four to six cards. There's a larger pocket right behind the card slots that is perfect for holding a bit of spare cash. You can also fit travel documents, like boarding passes, in this sleeve.

Aesthetically, the Mr. Lentz Passport Wallet looks rugged and hardy. The thick full-grain leather holds up well and develops a nice patina as you use it and break it in. Solid brass rivets line the outsides of the wallet, holding it together. The wallet also ships with a free tin of proprietary leather conditioner to help keep it soft as it ages and breaks in.

Thin enough to fit in a front pocket, this wallet is a perfect option for those looking for something that will last a long time and hold just the essentials. You can also choose to engrave the wallet, using any of a few different methods.

The Fjällräven Passport Wallet closes securely with a zipper and will hang on to your documents no matter where you go.

Pros : Water-resistant, protects your travel documents from the elements, keeps things from falling out and getting lost

Cons : Both sizes are bigger and bulkier than other travel wallets because of the zipper and material

If you're backpacking and carrying a lot, or want to just throw your travel documents in a bag's main compartment, a bifold travel wallet might not be your best option.

A more secure passport wallet with a zipper, like the Fjällräven Passport Wallet, lets you toss it in a bag with everything else, and you don't have to worry about anything falling out or getting lost.

The Fjällräven Passport Wallet is made of a water-resistant waxed canvas. Like most of the other passport wallets you'll find out there, the Fjallraven option is structured like a bifold, but this one has a zipper running along the entire outside.

When opened, the wallet has space to tuck your passport and folded boarding pass on the right side. There's also an interior zippered pocket, perfect for coins, ticket stubs, or other odd bits and ends. The left side of the wallet has six card slots, and there's an open pocket at the top for cash.

Fjallraven also makes a larger version of this wallet called the Travel Wallet , rather than the "Passport Wallet." They're basically the same thing; the main difference is that the Travel Wallet has a few more card slots and a loop to hold a pen, and is designed to fit unfolded boarding passes. It's almost more like a small purse or clutch. The smaller Passport Wallet can also hold a small pen and boarding passes, but there's no loop to keep it in place and boarding passes must be folded.

Personally, I prefer the smaller Passport Wallet — even though you have to fold your boarding passes to fit them, it's just a nicer hand-held size. However, both are great options, especially if you're storing the wallet in a bag.

While there's not much to do about it, you can at least make your group's time at the airports a little bit easier with the Lewis N. Clark Travel Wallet . With room for about four passports, plus cash, cards, boarding passes, customs forms, a pen, and even a phone, this is more than a travel wallet. It's more like a family travel organizer.

While the Lewis N. Clark is naturally bigger than a one-person travel wallet, it's smaller than you might expect considering how much it holds. That said, this isn't going in anyone's front pocket — think of it more as a folio.

The wallet folds closed like a clamshell and zips shut all the way around. When it's closed, there's still access to a small zip pocket on the front. 

When open, there are three pockets on the right side that are for passports. You can fit a few passports in each pocket, according to Amazon reviewers. It has six credit card slots, a zipper compartment for change and cash, and a larger zippered compartment for boarding passes or cash on the left side. In the middle, there's a loop for a pen so you can fill out forms on the plane.

The Travel Wallet is made from nylon that's durable and protective. It also has RFID-blocking material built in to add an extra layer of protection to your cards and passports. As for downsides, some buyers mention problems with the zipper.

Cuyana is known for making quality leather goods for very affordable prices. The Insider Reviews team recently tested a number of the company's wallets, including the Classic Passport Holder. We loved the wallet so much that we wrote a full review about it.

The simple leather wallet was designed in San Francisco and handmade in Argentina. Measuring 9-inches long, it's longer than most other passport holders, so it can hold a full boarding pass without wrinkling or folding. Cuyana also added a dedicated pocket for your passport, six card slots, and two large slide pockets for travel documents and anything else you need.

The pebbled leather is soft and smooth, and the card slots keep your cards in place securely without being too tight. You can get the passport holder in navy blue, stone gray, red, black, or a crocodile-embossed black. If you so choose, Cuyana will even monogram your wallet.

Based on our experience, it's the perfect stylish travel wallet, but it won't fit in your pocket, unless you happen to be wearing some intense cargo pants. It's a great pick if you have space in your bag and need to manage documents that you simply don't want to fold. — Malarie Gokey

From passports to visas, the paperwork is all important when it comes to jetting from one country to another, which is why it’s worth investing in one of the best travel wallets, to keep all your documents safe and ready to access when you need them.

Luckily, some of our favourite travel accessory brands have risen to the challenge, producing fantastic travel wallets that not only have room for all the essentials but look incredibly stylish and reduce the risk of identity fraud, too.

We strongly recommend opting for RFID (radio-frequency identification) wallets, which use nickel and copper-coated material (usually polyester) to reduce the risk of identity fraud, by blocking the electromagnetic signals emitted from your bank cards.

Take the time to think about what you’re going to be using your wallet for – if you’re going to fill it to capacity, we’d recommend opting for a zip closure, but if easy access is a priority, don’t write off the humble magnet or press-stud closure.

We’re also huge fans of wallets that have clamshell openings – ones that open fully, like a book , rather than requiring you to extract your essentials through tiny openings.

Our recent trips involved a lot of paperwork (such as visas), currency in various denominations as well as essentials such as our passport (obviously), boarding passes and bank cards. Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet

• Handy transparent pockets

This wallet has seven card pockets, including one covered by transparent plastic. Our advice? Use this one to stash ID cards, such as a driver’s licence – you can flash it without having to remove it from the wallet.

Larger slip pockets – placed beneath the smaller ones – are ideal for boarding passes and passports, and we used the pocket made from mesh to stash our iPhone. It’s another RFID wallet, which relies on nickel- and copper-coated polyester fabric to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Call us fickle but we loved the choice of four colourways, too.

Identity theft is no longer an invisible threat that brands merely use to convince us to part with extra cash. Well, some brands might still take this approach but Go Travel, which is known for its top-quality RFID travel wallets, definitely isn’t one of them, and this wallet is a case in point.

Despite its slimline design, it’s stuffed with pockets, to hold everything from passports (our rigorous testing proved that there was more than enough room for four) to boarding passes, which we placed in the extra-wide pockets beneath the ones designed to hold passports.

Unlike with similar products, the RFID tech has added minimal bulk, and its clamshell design, with zips that opened on three sides of each half of the wallet, meant refreshingly easy access to the contents.

Fjällräven kånken travel wallet

• Best : Travel wallet for easy access
• Material : 65 per cent polyester, 35 per cent cotton
• Extra-wide pockets
• Tough and water-resistant

How Fjällräven managed to squeeze so many pockets into such a compact wallet, we’ll never know. We had plenty of room for our passport, vaccination documentation and foreign currency, which we placed inside the wallet, while we kept our boarding passes in the extra-wide exterior pocket on the wallet’s rear.

There’s an incredible sense of toughness to the kånken (thanks, partly, to the water-resistant G-1000 fabric), and we loved how the concertina-like strip of material between the wallet’s two halves meant we could open the wallet fully – no fumbling around through narrow openings to extricate essential documents.

Keela travel ID wallet

• Best : For simplicity
• Material : Unspecified
• Can be worn under garments
• Great for easy access
• No bells an whistles

To begin with, we were sceptical about the simplicity of this wallet but we’re now total converts. In recent years, partly because of the extra documentation required for travel (whether it’s vaccination paperwork or visa forms, much of which isn’t required to check in for a flight), we’ve taken to carrying our passport in a separate wallet, simply so we can produce it without riffling through irrelevant paperwork. Our top tip? Before entering the airport, place your boarding pass and passport in this transparent wallet (which slips neatly under jackets or T-shirts) and simply whip them out as and when required.

Jack Wolfskin cashbag wallet

• Best : Compact travel wallet
• Material : Shell: 100 per cent polyamide; lining: 100 per cent polyester
• Great for thick wads of cash
• Small and easy to carry around

We love the name of this RFID wallet – if only because it brings to mind an accessory stuffed with thick wads of cash. That wasn’t the case where we were concerned, to be clear, although, we did find the extra-wide pocket useful for quickly stashing a wad of 1,000 Indian Rupees (don’t get excited – this equates to about £10).

It’s one of the smallest travel wallets in our selection, but that’s precisely why we love it – although it might not be large enough for your passport, it’s got more than enough room for currency, boarding passes and paperwork, and its size means it slips easily into pockets.

House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet

• Best : Large travel wallet
• Material : Vegan-friendly ‘leather’, faux cheetah fur, cotton lining
• Funky, stylish design
• Labelled compartments

We were instantly smitten with the flash of pink against the animal print, but the interior of this wallet was just as impressive. A zippered pocket was perfect for stashing loose change, while we used the shallow card pockets for hotel room keys and business cards. The highlight, however, was the main compartment, with its four dividers, clearly labelled (in chic golden font, no less) to indicate separate pockets for passports, tickets, documents and ‘other’.

Full disclosure, we were initially concerned by its larger size but a trip to India, which involved multiple internal flights (read: lots of tickets), visas and vaccination documentation, meant we easily filled this particular wallet.

The verdict: Travel wallets

If you want a wallet with all the bells and whistles, the Lifeventure RFID mini travel wallet is an absolute essential for jet-setters. It’s a great example of a product that proves opting for extra security doesn’t require going down the supersized route. Meanwhile, Fjällräven’s kånken travel wallet is a sturdy, stylish piece of kit that stands up to serious amounts of wear and tear. If you like to stand out from the crowd, however, the House of Disaster animal-print travel wallet offers a dose of dopamine-boosting design.

Are Travel Wallets a Good Idea?

Yes, a travel wallet can help savvy travelers keep their cash, cards, and identity safe. With identity protecting features like RFID blocking and security features like hidden stash pockets, a good travel wallet is more functional than an everyday wallet.

The kind of travel wallet you need varies by destination. Europe and Australia use a lot of coins, so unless you want $20 rolling out of your pocket every time you sit on the train, get a travel wallet with a dedicated zipper pocket. In South America, cash is king, and  ATM fees add up , so carry a travel wallet slim enough to fit in your front pocket (aka theft proof ), yet big enough for your cash.

Sometimes, all you need is a credit card, ID, and a bit of cash. These wallets get that.

1. Tyvek Paper Travel Wallet ($18)

I picked one of these futuristic durable paper wallets up a few years ago, and I loved it—while it lasted. While durable, they just don’t last as long as other wallets. And that’s ok.

These wallets are incredibly thin (just 3mm!), stupid light, and they’ll last for a few months of heavy use.

The best part is that they come in a wide range of awesome colors and styles, so go nuts and get one that really highlights your travel persona. I loved mine, and I remember it all these years later. That’s saying something.

3. Casmonal Slim Minimalist Elastic Travel Wallet ($10)

If you’re looking for a great budget travel wallet, the Casmonal Elastic Travel Wallet is a steal. The design is similar to the Nomatics Basic, with slightly more give and capacity thanks to the elastic band.

Stuff up to 6 cards in the main compartment with room for your cash and other small items. These wallets are interesting, light, and a great way to flaunt your minimalism… if that’s even possible.

The wallet comes in 20 different color combinations, so that might help.

5. CHUMS Zipper Wallet ($12)

I’m a big fan of this “fanny pack” of travel wallets. As a surfer, I appreciate the zippered construction and nylon material, as well as the key ring.

This wallet/coin purse is perfect for keeping your wallet and keys together. Always. Ideal for travel in Australia, New Zealand, or Europe, especially if you’re a budget traveler trying to keep track of every one of those precious coins.

2. Nomatics BASIC Minimalist Travel Wallet ($20)

This sleek, minimalist wallet is the epitome of “less is more.” Designed around the idea that most travelers use one card everyday, Nomatic created an easy access tab for getting to your most used card. This wallet is great for every day carry, but it’s really designed for  digital nomads  and savvy travelers. You have your one loyalty card (that thing that gets you free flights), and you use it everywhere. Keep it handy with this minimalist wallet.

The stash pouch is also great for your Airbnb key or valuable coins when you’re abroad, and the main compartment holds an additional 3-4 cards with room for cash.

I’m a big fan of front pocket, minimalist wallets, and I’ve been rocking this wallet for a while, and while it’s a bit of a squeeze, I dig it. Keep your nicknacks, photos, and souvenirs where they’re safe— in the cloud .

4. Decommissioned Firefighter Hose Money Clips ($29)

Not all money clips are created equal, especially when some are made out of actual upcycled polyester firefighter hose material.

Each wallet is unique, since they’re made from actual firefighter hoses, and they can obviously take a beating. Woven with T-90 nylon thread, and with room for 4-8 cards and cash, these wallets can take anything you can dish out.

With over 241 reviews, and a 5-star rating, what are you waiting for? Also, did I mention they’re made out of firefighter hoses? Oh, I did. Cool.

6. Infinity Minimalist Travel Wallet ($13)

This coal black, super slim nylon-elastic fabric travel wallet is only for the true minimalist.

It features one main stuff pocket that stretches to accommodate up to 10 cards (although you won’t want to fit that many), and a cash pocket, which is small. This is a great wallet for weekend travel or for the digital nomad that lives in the cloud.

The Best RFID Travel Wallets for Men

Unlike regular wallets, RFID-blocking wallets have a thin metal mesh in them to prevent people with RFID readers from reading personal identifying information, like credit card details, in your wallet.

Another great departure from bulky bi-fold wallets that just don’t fit in your front pocket, it’s got six card slots, and another dedicated “everyday” card slot. Plus, there’s a window pocket for your ID, so you don’t have to dig it out all the time.

According to the Django Products description, this heavy duty wallet is built to “solve problems.” And it does. This minimalist powerhouse holds up to 12 cards while still looking slim and feeling light thanks to the anodized aluminum hardware and silicon band/cash strap.

Finished with premium leather and built-in RFID blocking, this wallet is stylish and will help protect your identity abroad.

4. Bellroy Hide & Seek Travel Wallet ($89)

Duct Tape Wallet (Free)

Yes, you can make your own duct tape wallet. Just  follow these instructions , and you’ll be on your way to hipster saintdom. Honestly, these wallets work just fine, but building them is a pain in the ass, and they don’t hold up well to weather or heavy use. Just spring for an actual travel wallet.

DIY Money Clip (Free)

A slightly better DIY travel wallet is the old binder clip wallet. This guy has a decent  YouTube tutorial  on it, but essentially, you clip your cards together in the main section of the clip, then wrap your cash around those cards, securing it all with the clip “ears.”

I’ve used one of these for a few months, and it was fine, but the clip really doesn’t handle too few cards very well, and it’s not the easiest wallet to use. You’ll probably lose a card or some cash, and if nothing else, you’ll scratch up your cards and ID. Not highly recommended, but still pretty neat if you need something in a pinch.

Travel wallets are all about getting rid of clutter, keeping your valuables safe and organized, and making sure you enjoy your trip. Less is more when it comes to carry on packing and  digital nomadism.  Nowhere is that more true than your bulky, unsafe, outdated wallet.

Human-sounding AI can plan, help book your travel. But can you trust it?

It wasn’t so long ago that travelers planned trips without the internet.

“Back in the day, our parents used to go to these travel agents and really kind of express what they were looking for and what kind of vacation they wanted,” said Saad Saeed, co-founder and CEO of Layla, an AI travel planner whose website launched this year. “Slowly, we kind of acclimatized ourselves to start using these search boxes, clicks, these forms and filters.”

Artificial intelligence-driven tools like Layla can now turn back the clock on that experience, engaging with users almost like humans to customize travel plans with lightning speed plus all the resources of the web. But does AI actually make travel planning easier and can it compare to human expertise? 

Yes and no. Here’s why.

Can AI actually understand us?

It can try. 

“What are you personally looking for in this trip and what do you want out of it?” asked Saeed. “Do you want to reconnect with your partner, for example, or do you want to just feel some adventure and thrill?” 

A human travel agent may ask a series of questions to understand a client’s needs. So can generative AI , which picks up on keywords. Mindtrip, an AI planner launched publicly on May 1, has an actual travel quiz that asks users to rank priorities like “Is your ideal vacation day an exhilarating adventure or a relaxing break?” using sliding scales.

“What we get at the end of that quiz, using the AI, is a really customized description,” explained  Mindtrip Founder and CEO Andy Moss. That then informs what the AI suggests to the traveler. 

Informed suggestions can save users time in narrowing down destinations and experiences, as well as  introduce places users may never have discovered on their own.

Can AI fully replace humans?

No. Layla may sound human, using conversational phrases like “I've got three cozy nests that won't make your wallet cry.”

“She has a personality. We try to make her funny and so on, where it's really that friend that can get to know you and then recommend you the perfect stuff,” Saeed said.

But part of Layla’s expertise comes from the real-life experiences of some 1,600 travel content creators  the Berlin-based platform has partnered with. Their videos and insights can give users a richer picture of what to expect.

Mindtrip also leans on human expertise, having tapped a limited group of travel influencers for curated content with plans to eventually open it up so anyone can share their travel itineraries and experiences with the public.

Is AI a threat to privacy?

With all the rapid advancements in AI in just the past year, some users are wary of its safety .

“Data privacy is definitely one of our biggest concerns, and we ensure that none of the personal identifiable information ever reaches basically the model providers. That will all stay with us,” Layla’s Saeed said. “None of their personally identifiable data can ever be basically used to profile them or basically go into any of these systems, which are training these different models.”

Booz Allen Hamilton, the nation’s largest provider of AI to the federal government , focuses heavily on ethical and  secure AI, as well as adhering to the government’s policies on data collection. 

“We collect as little information as we can in order to provide a secure transaction,” said Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Will Healy, who heads up their recreation work, including Recreaton.gov , the government’s central travel planning site for public lands like national parks. “We don't save your searches. We don't save your credit card data. We're very careful about the data that we store.”

Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory , isn’t too worried about security in the initial brainstorming stages of travel planning with AI.

“I don't see, at this point, how AI-generated advice is spiritually different from travel guide articles that you might read on certain websites,” he said. “Travel planning is one really nice use case of these models, as narrow as it is, because it's a scenario in which you want to be given ideas but you don't actually need to commit to them.” 

What’s next for AI? 

Things could be different, though, if AI is used beyond trip planning. Deloitte sees AI being woven into all parts of travel.

“There is an opportunity for a real engine – I'm going to just use a generic term, engine – that allows you to search and pull it all together and to sort based off of your personal reasons for prioritization and then not stopping at ‘hey give me a list’ or ‘here's what to do,’ but ‘OK, now go create my itinerary, help me book it, track it all the way through that travel process,” said Matt Soderberg, principal, U.S. airlines leader for Deloitte. 

Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report, released in early April, identifies seven stages where AI can intersect with a trip, from personalized recommendations based on past travel, online purchases and tendencies to day-of issues to a post-travel pulse, where travelers may be asked about their experience and start thinking about future trips. 

“When you solve across all of those, that's going to be the Holy Grail,” Soderberg said. “The difficulty is that doesn't all sit in one place. And so how do you get the right information and the right data to bring all of that together for a single experience for the consumer? And who's going to own that?”

Layla and Mindtrip, among others, already offer booking through partners like Booking.com. “It's all about making things actionable,” Moss said.

But for now, if issues come up mid-trip, AI tools can’t fix them like humans can. Humans still have to get involved.

After traveling in a van for 2 weeks, I saw how the lifestyle could be cheaper than my Denver life

• I lived and traveled in a campervan for two weeks.
• I wanted to explore the US, but I also wanted to see if van life was something I could do full-time.
• The trip highlighted how life could be more affordable — but only if I worked at it.

It was my third gas station Icee within my first week of traveling by van , and I knew that if I did van life full-time, I'd have to cut the habit.

Not just for the sake of my sugar levels but for the sake of my wallet.

While a $4 Icee doesn't seem like much, it adds up. I quickly realized that these small costs — eating out, gas station snacks, souvenirs — are where van life can get expensive.

At the same time, I saw ways that the van-life movement can be a more affordable way to live.

Like most cities, Denver isn't a cheap place to live

Last October, I left my apartment in Denver for a two-week van trip exploring Southwest America in a rented Ram ProMaster. My route included six states, a handful of national parks , and stops in small roadside towns.

I've long romanticized the choice to live out of a vehicle and explore nature, so while I wanted to see new parts of the country, I also wanted to test-drive the lifestyle .

My desire to ditch my belongings and live in a van has only grown in recent years as I've watched the cost of living rise, too.

Apartments.com reported that the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Denver was $1,681 as of March. Although that number is slightly lower than last year's, Axios reported that Denver's year-over-year inflation rate was the second highest in the country last summer.

It's not just Denver that's feeling these increases. The cost of living is high in major cities across the US, and it's only getting more difficult to find cheap rent .

Plenty of nomads I've interviewed cited expensive rent as the reason they considered living on the road in the first place.

Brittany Newson , for example, said she was living in San Fransico and spending $1,300 to rent a room in a house with four other people. She told BI that she remembers thinking, "There has to be a better way." In 2019, she moved into a renovated school bus.

I've felt that strain firsthand. While I pay a bit less than average for rent, I'm spending more on groceries, paying more than financial advisors recommend I should for my apartment , and I'm thinking twice before eating out these days.

So finding a lifestyle like van life, which includes adventure and potential savings, sounds too good to be true.

Living in a van eliminates some costs but adds others

Throughout the two weeks on the road , I spent less than I normally would on certain things. I also spent more in other categories.

I added 3,000 miles to the van's odometer, making gas one of my most expensive spending categories. Over two weeks, I spent $660 at gas stations. If I took on the lifestyle full-time, I would travel slower and spend less. However, it'd still likely be more than the $75 I budget for gas in Denver each month.

Multiple nomads have said gas is their new rent when living on the road. Zach Nelson , for example, told BI that he got a solid deal from an old boss for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter he lives in today. Now, gas is one of his few expenses.

"Other than car maintenance and insurance, the only thing you really pay for is gas and food," he said.

When it came to food, I spent about the same on groceries as I do living in Denver. I shopped for the trip at Costco and Trader Joe's and spent less than $150 with plenty of food left over. I also spent about the same eating out.

As for accommodations, this felt like the cheapest part of the trip. I splurged on one night at an RV resort, which cost about $60. I also spent $25 to sleep in Joshua Tree National Park and a similar rate for a nearby campsite. Most nights, though, I found free public land or a free parking lot outside a Walmart or Cracker Barrel . Altogether, I spent less than $170 on campsites.

The largest expense would likely be the cost of the van itself. For this trip, I received a media rate from Native Campervans for the van rental. If I did this full-time, though, I'd purchase my own vehicle.

If I was willing to rough it, I could purchase a used bus, van, or car for a few thousand dollars. On the other end, a new Mercedes Sprinter van starts at $71,000 before conversion.

Realistically, the price would be somewhere in between for me. If I wanted to purchase a Ram ProMaster in Denver, I'd likely spend about $27,000 for a used model, according to TrueCar . If I planned to live in a van for about three years and snagged a solid interest rate, I'd pay about $900 a month, according to Bankrate . Hopefully, I'd make some of that back by selling it afterward.

If I calculate the cost of a van loan, campsites, and gas, that still is less than my $1,500 rent. But only by a few hundred dollars.

From the nomads I've spoken to, how much you want to spend is truly up to the individual. Some families have saved tens of thousands of dollars by buying and renovating a school bus instead of a house. I experienced ways that living in a van could be cheaper than my lifestyle today

There are hidden costs that come with van life . You often have to pay for showers, clean water, and emptying your van's gray water tank. Vehicle maintenance issues can arise, and my car insurance would likely be higher than I pay today.

But I'd also eliminate costs with van life. I'd no longer worry about electricity, gas, or water bills. I'd cancel my expensive climbing gym membership and pivot to the outdoors. And I'd spend less on clothes since I'd have nowhere to store them.

Plus, my day-to-day activities would be cheaper. I'd save money by swapping my Sunday brunches with Sunday hikes and nights at the movie theater with evenings stargazing.

I'm not saying van life is necessarily cheaper than city living, but I am convinced it can be if I work at it.

For now, I'm waiting for auto loan interest rates to plummet and am searching for an affordable used van before I make the leap.

George Bush International Airport (also known as Houston Intercontinental) isn’t the city’s only major airport facility, but still ranks among the nation’s busiest in terms of passenger traffic. Ongoing construction and renovations have impacted lounges in the Houston airport in recent years.

Here’s what you need to know about all the Houston lounges airport goers can visit, including location, how to gain access and what you can expect once you’re there.

Houston Intercontinental is a hub for United Airlines, and serves dozens of other carriers on domestic and international routes.

The facility has five terminals (A, B, C, D and E) connected by two automated people movers: the Skyway train (operating above ground and beyond security) and the Subway train (operating below ground and before security). Terminals B, C, D and E are also connected internally so passengers can walk between them.

There are 12 Houston airport lounges in total, including at least one in each terminal. If you’re flying in business or first class, have airline elite status , or hold a credit card with airport lounge access , there’s a good chance you’re eligible for complimentary admission to at least one Houston airport lounge. If not, many lounges have day passes available for purchase.

Most lounges require you to show government-issued identification along with a same-day confirmed boarding pass, and may require additional credentials (such as a lounge membership card). All lounges in the Houston airport offer complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, as well as the other amenities described below.

Terminal A is accessible on the inter-terminal trains, but can’t be reached on foot from the other terminals. In addition to the two lounges described below, Terminal A is home to Cadillac Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar, which offers credits to eligible Priority Pass members.

American Airlines Admirals Club

Located airside near gates A25 and A26.

Complimentary access for Admirals Club members, qualifying first and business class passengers, eligible AAdvantage credit card members, and non-AAdvantage oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members. The lounge is also accessible with an Admirals Club one-day pass, and by uniformed military personnel traveling on a same-day American Airlines flight.

Visitors must present a valid photo ID and boarding pass, along with other access credentials (like an Admirals Club membership card).

Measuring at only 4,300 square feet, this lounge manages to fit all the standard Admirals Club amenities. Visitors can enjoy the buffet for light fare, snacks and beverages, as well as a full-service bar with complimentary house drinks — larger meals and specialty drinks are available for purchase.

Along with the usual magazines, newspapers and flight boards, the space also boasts a private room with a conference table (available for rent), and views of the two westernmost runways.

United Club

Located airside across from Gate A9.

Complimentary access for United Club members and one-time pass holders traveling on United or a Star Alliance partner; United and Star Alliance first class and business class passengers on eligible itineraries, Star Alliance Gold members on eligible itineraries, and Air Canada Maple Leaf Club members flying on Star Alliance airlines.

Active duty U.S. military personnel may also be eligible for complimentary access.

One of five United Club locations at Houston Intercontinental Airport (not including the United Polaris lounge), this location offers a buffet with snacks and light fare, as well as a full-service bar.

House drinks are complimentary, while premium drinks carry an additional charge. The lounge offers natural light from its west-facing windows, but does not have its own restroom facilities.

Terminal B is accessible on the inter-terminal trains, and can be reached on foot from Terminals C, D and E via the north section of Terminal C (near Gate C15). There’s only one lounge in Terminal B.

United Club Terminal B

Located airside on the mezzanine level above the United Express ticket counter

The only lounge option in Terminal B, this location offers a buffet with snacks and light fare. The full-service bar offers complimentary house drinks, while premium drinks carry an additional charge.

Rather than use an open floor plan, the space is broken up into smaller seating areas, including a section of personal work areas. Unlike the United Club in Terminal A, this location has its own restroom facilities.

Terminal C is split into two parts: the north section includes Gates C1-15, while the south section includes Gates C29-45. In addition to the two United Clubs described below, Terminal C is home to Landry’s Seafood and Minute Suites, which offer eligible Priority Pass members dining credits and a free 1-hour visit, respectively.

United Club Terminal C North

Located airside near Gate C1.

This location offers a buffet with snacks and light fare. The full-service bar offers complimentary house drinks, while premium drinks carry an additional charge.

The lounge mostly comprises one long, open room, with north-facing windows looking out on the apron of the nearby C gates and the runway beyond. The space is broken up by a few glass dividers, but offers little privacy apart from two small enclosed work areas.

Unlike other United Clubs at IAH, this lounge offers single-occupant restrooms.

United Club Terminal C South

Located airside near Gate C33 

Rather than use an open floor plan, the space is broken up into smaller seating areas, including a tv lounge and a section of personal work areas. This location also has its own restroom facilities.

Terminal D is accessible on the inter-terminal trains, and can be reached on foot from Terminals B, C and E. Terminal D is home to five lounges, and while it’s the only terminal without a United Club, the ones in Terminals C and E aren’t far off.

American Express Centurion Lounge

Located airside near Gate D12.

Complimentary access with the Centurion Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express when traveling on any airline, and with the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card when traveling on a Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight. Terms apply.

Centurion cardholders have no time restrictions. Platinum cardholders may enter up to three hours before a scheduled departure or up to three hours before the lounge closes (with a scheduled departure after that time). Connecting passengers may enter upon arrival.

You must present your valid, eligible AmEx card, the boarding pass for your departing flight, and a physical government-issued ID for access.

Operating since 2016, this lounge offers 8,500 square feet of space to relax with amenities typical of the AmEx Centurion Lounge network. You’ll find a buffet with separate breakfast and lunch/dinner menus designed by local chef Justin Yu, and a full-service bar with Houston-inspired cocktails and wines.

Visitors also get access to shower facilities, a computing and printing workstation, and the lounge’s wellness area (with complimentary access to content from meditation app Calm).

One thing you won’t find is a view, as the lounge is void of windows to the outside. Nonetheless, this is the nicest of the lounges at Houston airport Terminal D.

Air France Lounge

Located airside by Gate D18.

Complimentary access for La Première (first class) passengers, business class passengers traveling on Standard or Flex fares, Flying Blue elite members with Gold status and above, and SkyTeam Elite Plus members.

As part of the Priority Pass network, complimentary access is also available to eligible Priority Pass members, though access may be restricted due to space constraints.

This space is on the small side, but offers most airport lounge essentials. Visitors can expect a buffet with snacks and light fare, a selection of hot and cold drinks (including beer, wine and spirits), access to a variety of newspapers via the Air France app, and a few different seating options.

One notable shortcoming: the lounge doesn’t have its own restrooms, though there are some nearby at Gate D16.

KLM Crown Lounge

Located airside across from Gate D15.

Complimentary access for business class passengers traveling on Standard or Flex fares, Flying Blue elite members with Gold status and above, and SkyTeam Elite Plus members.

As part of the Priority Pass network , complimentary access is also available to eligible Priority Pass members, though access may be restricted between 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. due to space constraints.

Renovated in the fall of 2023, this lounge remains on the smaller side, measuring a shade under 4,000 square feet and accommodating up to 100 guests.

You’ll find a self-service buffet with hot and cold options that vary throughout the day, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, international newspapers, luggage storage and closet space. While there’s no shower suite, this lounge does have its own restroom facilities (unlike the Air France lounge nearby).

Located airside across from Gate D8.

Free of charge to traveling Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as their families.

As one of three USO centers in the Houston area, this lounge offers a range of standard services in addition to special holiday celebrations and other morale-boosting programs. Amenities include snacks and beverages, computer workstations, TVs and video games, a children’s play area and more.

HAS Executive Club

Open daily from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 a.m.

Complimentary access available to eligible British Airways, Emirates, EVA Air and Oneworld passengers and elite members.

Not tied to one airline (or even one airline alliance), this lounge is contracted by several carriers to accommodate their passengers traveling to and from Houston.

It features an extensive hot and cold self-serve buffet and full-service bar and a business center, and a separate TV room. The lounge lacks restrooms, so you’ll need to use the ones in the terminal nearby.

Terminal E is accessible on the inter-terminal trains, and can be reached on foot from Terminals B, C and D. The terminal is home to two adjacent United Airlines lounges: one is a standard United Club, while the other is a more upscale Polaris Lounge.

United Airlines Polaris Lounge

Complimentary access for United Polaris business class passengers, and for first and business class passengers traveling on Star Alliance airlines.

Designed for business and first class passengers, this lounge offers a step up in service compared to standard United Clubs. Offering over 12,500 square feet of space, there are seating options for both large and small parties.

In addition to a self-serve buffet and full-service bar, guests can enjoy restaurant-style dining from separate breakfast and lunch/dinner menus offering both small plates and entrees. The lounge also offers shower suites, daybeds and single-occupant restrooms.

It was a sunny afternoon in February at the height of the high season on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, but my partner, Aaren, and I were far from lounging on a white-sand beach, snorkeling over a coral reef or strolling among the Easter-egg-colored buildings of Willemstad, Curaçao’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site — typical activities for travelers to this former Dutch colony.

Instead, on a kayak tour with Serlon St Jago, a guide from the Curaçao Rif Mangrove Park , we were learning about the country’s mangrove restoration, and the vital role mangrove habitats play in coastal resilience, protection for marine and bird species, and fighting the effects of climate change.

No poisonous snakes, alligators or large predators live on Curaçao, Mr. St Jago said, reassuring information as we paddled toward a forbidding wall of mangroves lining Piscadera Bay. Up close, the trees were magnificent and cheerful. Colorful birds roosted on tangled branches and trunks, and small paths under the green and occasionally yellow leaves beckoned us to explore. With our kayaks beached, Mr. St Jago pointed out fiddler crabs and mussels, and described differences of the local mangrove species — the red, white and black — and how they adapted to live and propagate where water meets land.

“There’s so much life here,” he said with infectious enthusiasm.

We were the only tourists on the water, but getting more visitors like us interested in mangroves, perhaps even persuading them to replant some of the vital trees themselves, has been a priority of scientists, activists, park rangers and tourism operators on Curaçao in recent years.

The island isn’t alone in its efforts: Similar mangrove-focused work has started around the world, in places like Indonesia , Australia , Belize and Florida , as fragile destinations balance tourism’s growth with the conservation — and restoration — of the natural resources that captivate visitors.

“Coral reefs get all the attention. But mangroves are probably a lot more important,” said Gabby Ahmadia , a vice president with the oceans program at the World Wildlife Fund who oversees the organization’s mangrove science and restoration programs. “My favorite analogy about mangroves is that they are Swiss Army knives, because they do provide so many different benefits and they can do so many different things.”

Though these forests are one degree of separation from the sights and the activities that traditionally draw visitors to the ocean, changing perceptions might be hard. To protect the environment, mangrove kayak tours can be — as are most snorkel, fishing and bird-watching tours offered in other destinations — limited by number, and visitors must be interested in the first place. With their summer reads and beach toys, family traditions and limited vacation days, most tourists might simply agree with the old saying “Life is better at the beach.”

A foundation of life

The twisty branches, trunks and distinctive aboveground roots of mangroves are a stark, complex repudiation of how a child’s drawing portrays a common tree. The roots can arch up, pop up spikelike from the water or form stilts above and under the surface. Adapted to oxygen-poor soil, high salinity and the ebb and flow of an intertidal zone, coastal mangroves thrive where other trees and shrubs would perish. Unless they are yellow, the leaves are green, and some, if you lick them, taste salty.

Mangrove forests can appear impenetrable, muddy, smelly and swampy. For centuries, they have been cleared for firewood, farmland, urban development, aquaculture and, yes, tourism. On Curaçao, mangroves are now found on only 0.012 percent of the island. Globally, more than half of the mangrove forests have been cut down or otherwise destroyed in the past 50 years. Deforestation has slowed — but not stopped — in recent years, and rising sea levels and increased storm activity have done further damage.

But coastal mangroves — there are some 60 species worldwide — are the foundation of life above and below the water. With intricate root systems, they act as nurseries for juvenile fish and other marine life. Mangrove branches and trunks make safe feeding and nesting sites for yellow warblers , tricolored herons and other bird species, reptiles like iguanas, and insects aplenty.

Those strongly anchored roots also protect from flooding, erosion and tidal surges by slowing down seawater and trapping dirt and debris. More crucially, mangrove forests are extraordinary for decreasing the effects of global warming, by absorbing and storing carbon annually at a rate 10 times as great as tropical rainforests. Mangroves, along with other coastal wetlands, “sequester enough carbon each year to offset the burning of over one billion barrels of oil,” according to the Nature Conservancy .

Surreptitious beginnings

Ryan de Jongh, a 53-year-old Curaçao native, activist and tour guide, is the living embodiment of regenerative tourism. He’s an important reason we encountered a lush, thriving ecosystem in Piscadera Bay, and demonstrates how one person can make a difference.

Mr. de Jongh grew up swimming in the bay and watched the area’s mangroves being cleared for fuel and construction. In 2006, he surreptitiously planted the first mangrove tree — a single seedling can mature in around 15 years and lead to an entire thicket — and now, he said, more than 100,000 trees are growing. He made similarly stealthy plantings at other inlets and bays, making himself a local hero in the process.

Mr. de Jongh, who gives kayak tours himself , now works on widespread government-sanctioned restoration projects.

His aim is to eventually plant 1.3 million trees on the island. “I have to transform literally a desert back to green,” he said.

The interior of Curaçao certainly looks like a desert, with a dry, dusty landscape of cactus and other succulents. Along with its closest island neighbors, Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao is outside the Caribbean’s hurricane belt and receives minimal rainfall. People on the island drink desalinated seawater.

The trade winds bring cooler temperatures. In the 16th century, they also brought Europeans who enslaved and deported the Indigenous population and turned Curaçao into a slaving port. The colonists also planted oranges, sugar cane and other nonnative species, with varying degrees of success, and developed giant salt pans for export, but it was the construction of an oil refinery in 1918 and growing tourism that finally brought widespread jobs. The refinery shut down in 2019 — nine years after Curaçao voted to become a semiautonomous nation from the Netherlands — an event that only emphasized tourism’s importance for Curaçao’s economy. Last year, the island, only 40 miles long, welcomed 1.3 million visitors .

Aaren and I gladly did our part to support the economy: In Willemstad, that meant eating at Plasa Bieu , the Old Market, where individual vendors cook and sell local cuisine. We fought with each other over the fried wahoo and an arepa di pampuna — pumpkin pancake — but we were warned off the cactus soup. “I live here,” said another diner, “and I don’t even eat that.” We also snapped photos, like so many other visitors, while crossing the floating Queen Emma Bridge , and watched it open and close for marine traffic.

We waited in an hourlong, locals-heavy line at De Visserij Piscadera Seafood restaurant (“slaying and filleting” since 2017), where diners choose and purchase their fish fillets before sitting down; we drank oregano punch for the first time (think mint ice tea, but oregano and oh so refreshingly delicious); and we inhaled grilled shrimp and raw fresh tuna.

Further north, we ate “williburgers” — goat burgers — at Marfa’s GoodHangout in Sint Willibrordus, which overlooks an old salt pan that, sadly, the resident flamingoes absented that day, and delighted upon coming across a coral nursery while scuba diving right off the jam-packed Kokomo Beach.

Coral reefs are crucial to Curaçao’s tourism and fishing industries and valued at more than $445 million annually, according to a 2016 economic assessment published by the nonprofit Waitt Institute. And coral reefs, which support roughly 25 percent of all marine life, are enduring cataclysmic bleaching and disease brought on or compounded by climate change.

In the last 10 years, scientists have better understood the symbiosis between coral reefs and mangroves: They don’t need each other to exist, but proximity brings benefits to both ecosystems.

“Working in this field of conservation, you might come in from one entry point and then you realize everything is connected,” said Dr. Ahmadia of the W.W.F. “We can work on coral reefs, but we should be thinking about sea grass beds and mangroves, because they are all really connected. And then of course, they are connected to the human environment.”

One morning, Aaren and I walked through the 30-acre Curaçao Rif Mangrove Park , a short stroll from the center of Willemstad and a shorter one from the island’s cruise ship terminal. Open since 2022, the park offers guided and audio tours, elevated boardwalks, programs for local schoolchildren and a tiered entrance-fee system (guilders and U.S. dollars accepted) for residents and overseas visitors. Some 17,766 people came in 2023, an increase of 14,687 from 2022.

Manfred van Veghel is the new director of the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation, which oversees the mangrove park and five other national parks. Working with the government of Curaçao, local travel operators and activists like Mr. de Jongh, Dr. van Veghel aims to expand park access, construct an elevated bridge and add a visitor center, among other goals. The efforts are part of his desire to transform Curaçao into more of a nature-based tourist destination.

“We had a record last year and they are pushing to get more,” Dr. van Veghel said of Curaçao’s number of annual visitors. Yet, he said, the beaches are getting full. “So we need to get activities other than going to the beach — and the mangrove park is an excellent activity.”

Mark Spalding is a senior marine scientist with the Nature Conservancy and lead scientist of the Mapping Ocean Wealth initiative , an online tool that applies economic value to coastal ecosystems.

Dr. Spalding said a draw of mangrove activities, like boating and hiking, is that “without having to trek through the Amazon for hours and hours, you can get that sense of wilderness and experience, and also the peace and tranquillity very quickly and very easily.”

“It might only be two hours of your entire holiday,” he said, “but it’s the thing you take home with you — the story you tell.”

75-year-old 'mastermind' of a 2005 armed robbery that killed a UK police officer sentenced to life

A 75-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a British police officer who was shot dead during an armed robbery of a travel agency in northern England nearly two decades ago

LONDON — A 75-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced Friday for the murder of a British police officer who was shot dead during an armed robbery in northern England nearly two decades ago.

Piran Ditta Khan was convicted in April, as he had fled the country to Pakistan soon after the murder of Sharon Beshenivsky. He was extradited to the U.K. last year.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard sentenced him in Leeds Crown Court to life imprisonment. He must serve a minimum term of 40 years in prison.

“You will inevitably spend the remainder of your life in custody, but that is a consequence of sentencing a man of your age for a crime of this particular gravity,” he said. “You have had your younger and healthier years at liberty because you chose to leave the country when you feared you were about to be arrested.”

Though Khan stayed in the lookout car during the robbery at the family-run Universal Express travel agents in the city of Bradford in November 2005, prosecutors argued that he was the “mastermind” behind the robbery as he organized it and purchased the weapons. Police officers in Britain do not carry guns on routine patrols.

“Even though he did not fire the fatal shot, his actions stole from Sharon and those who knew her a lifetime together, and as he is sentenced today our thoughts remain with her family and loved ones,” said specialist prosecutor David Holderness.

Beshenivsky was 38 years old and only nine months into the job when she responded to an alert about the robbery. She was shot dead at point-blank range by one of the three men who carried out the robbery. Her colleague, Teresa Milburn, survived after being shot in the chest.

Beshenivsky, who had three children and two stepchildren, was gunned down on her youngest daughter’s fourth birthday. In a victim personal statement read in court, Beshenivsky’s daughter Lydia said she was “too young and innocent” to understand what happened when her mother failed to return home from work to celebrate her birthday.

“There will always be a void in my life — a void that should have been filled with my mum’s presence but as a result of violent, callous actions by you, Piran Ditta Khan, and your associates that day, you robbed me of a future and precious time with my mum,” she said. “Every birthday is a reminder of what happened that day.”

Paul Beshenivsky, who had been married to his wife for four years when she died, said telling the children what had happened was “the hardest thing I have ever had to do.”

Khan fled to Pakistan two months after the robbery. He was arrested by local authorities in Pakistan in January 2020 and extradited to the U.K. last year.

Khan denied the allegations.
