After going on a few trips with a Graco Pack ‘n Play travel crib that we got as a hand-me-down, I was a feeling a bit let down by the stress of it. After all, the ubiquitous Pack ‘n Play crib is heavy, bulky, hard to carry and not outrageously attractive.

I learned that there were other better travel cribs out there, and I was excited to try the BabyBjorn Travel Crib as one that we’d be excited to use during trips. Even someone like me can fold it up and unfold it again, without much of an instructional manual.

In this review, I’ll detail how BabyBjorn’s travel crib is working out for us, from folding it up into its carrying case to how we even used it as a play pen for several months. Read on, to see my experience with this lightweight crib.

BabyBjorn generously gifted us the Travel Crib Light ; however, this review is not sponsored and all photos and opinions are authentically my own.

Summary of the Travel Crib Light

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is one of two BabyBjorn baby products for sleep. It’s specifically for travel, as it folds up to the size of a “large briefcase,” as I’ve described it. Having a travel crib that your child is used to may be a safer alternative to a hotel crib, if you’re looking for tips for staying in a hotel with a baby .

What’s nice about how it folds up is that it’s slim, so you could put it flat on top of luggage in a trunk. I’d actually say that’s why it’s a great pick for road trips with a child who is past the “bassinet stage” and up to age 3 (if they fit).

The travel crib is different from the traditional Pack ‘n Play because the mattress is much closer to the floor, suspended by a mesh enclosure. You’re able to see the child from all angles, with no blocked areas.

Overall, it’s a minimalist design, with angles toward the bottom, and slim poles. There is soft padding over the top edges, so there’s nothing sharp or hard for toddlers who are able to stand up in the crib. Also, there’s no upper weight limit! The “able to climb out of it” is the designated time to stop using this travel crib.

Remember: the Travel Crib Light is NOT suitable for toddlers or children who are able to climb out of it on their own, and should also not be used in place of a bassinet for newborns.

Features of the Travel Crib Light

I’ll name a few of the features of the Travel Crib Light that we’ve enjoyed while our daughter has been in it.

Weight and dimensions

When assembled, the Travel Crib Light measures 32 x 44 x 24 in. It’s not an overbearing size, and I think that’s something worth noting. We kept ours in our living room for months, as a play pen.

As for weight, the entire travel crib weighs 13 pounds including the carrying case. As it’s the lightest travel crib we own, it’s what made me feel comfortable asking my mom to carry it by herself to the car from my apartment (which is a bit of a walk to the parking lot).

The fact that the travel crib folds down so slimly overall makes it a less overwhelming item to bring over to a family member or friend’s house, for a child’s nap time or night sleep. Showing up at the door with the hefty Pack ‘n Play feels more burdensome to me.

Foldability and packability

To fold up the Travel Crib Light , I first remove the mattress, and fold it in half. This is what gives the Travel Crib Light its shape when it’s in its carrying case.

Then, I unhook and fold each pole using the arrow symbol as the way in which it should fold down. With the four poles folded toward the center, it’s then possible to fold the entire crib frame in half. With the frame nestled in the center of the mattress fold in the carrying case, all you have to do is zip it up for taking on the go.

Included items

What’s included in buying the Travel Crib Light is the carrying case, mattress and entire crib frame, as well as a fitted sheet. You can also get an extra sheet as an add-on.

Machine washable

The crib fabric is removable and able to be washed in a regular washing machine. This is great because especially when being used as a play pen, like we’ve used ours, you never know what can happen.

Safety standards

The Travel Crib Light upholds both the EN 716 (standard child sleep safety in domestic environments) safety standard as well as requirements for national fire safety.

Comparing the Travel Crib Light to the Graco Pack ‘n Play

The biggest comparable factor between the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Graco Pack ‘n Play is the weight and shape. When we were packing and getting ready to take a road trip the Upstate NY, Dan told me to not even try to lift our Pack ‘n Play, because it was going to be too heavy for me.

He was right! That thing is like a rock.

Dan carried the Pack ‘n Play down to the car so that I didn’t have to (this was before we had the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light). That is because it weighs almost 19 lbs, and folds down to a bulky size.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light folds down to 6 pounds less, and you can feel that difference. The shape into which the Travel Crib Light folds is manageable and carry-able. I have no problem lifting it with one hand.

The Pack ‘n Play is also pretty long and awkward when it goes into our trunk. The BabyBjorn crib is a much more manageable size when folded.

(Here’s a photo of our Pack ‘n Play, assembled at an Airbnb, before we got the BabyBjorn Crib)

Comparing the Travel Crib Light to the Guava Travel Crib

More interestingly, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Guava Lotus Travel Crib are worth comparing because they are both mesh travel cribs that have the mattresses on the ground. The designs are similar. The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light happens to weigh slightly less than the Guava Crib, which weighs 15 lbs.

Baby Bjorn travel crib feet on a hard wood floor

In comparing price, the Guava Lotus is less expensive and sometimes, it goes on sale. The Lotus folds down into a different shape, though, which is interesting. While the BabyBjorn Travel Crib folds down into the taller and flatter shape, the Lotus folds down into a compact long cube, and becomes a backpack for wearing while walking through the airport.

Both have that minimalist design through the slanted poles and the mesh crib body. Both fold down simply and are quite unassuming as pieces of luggage to take while you’re traveling with your baby.

I think the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is better for road trips if you often have a full trunk, due to how it’s a pretty flat item. The Guava Lotus may be better for how to fly with a baby .

Here’s a photo of our Guava travel crib in its case. To see our thoughts on the Guava crib, check out my Guava Lotus Travel Crib review .

Is it worth the price?

I think that for a lightweight machine-washable travel crib, what you’re paying for with the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is that it’s a thoughtful manageable shape and size for so many parents. The price reflects the lengths that BabyBjorn has gone through to get this crib down to 13 lbs. and into a slim carrying case with a simple fold-out method.

If you plan to have several children and use this crib for lots of travel, I’d say the decision is quite simple. Of course, if you don’t travel too often and the crib will get limited use, maybe try to borrow one from friends or family.

Also, if you’d like to do what we did, and use the Travel Crib Light as a “play pen” at home, try that! It’s easily foldable to remove from your living room or family room when you have company, so it’s like a temporary solution for containing a baby who’s sitting, but not yet crawling.

Where to buy the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

While this crib is not carried everywhere, I’ve found it at these 4 retailers, including BabyBjorn.com (recommended).

  • BabyBjorn.com : Buying on BabyBjorn’s website will get you free shipping. The item will ship in 1-2 days! Buying here also lets you bundle with the sheet, which may not be possible at other retailers below. (Also, all 3 colors are available!)
  • Amazon (only black and silver colors are available)
  • Target (only silver color is available)
  • PotteryBarn Kids (only black and silver colors are available)

Tips for getting the most out of your BabyBjorn Travel Crib

Here are a few more nice-to-know things about this baby product for travel.

Flying with the BabyBjorn Crib

Due to the size when folded up in the case, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib (typically) can’t be carried on as a carry-on item for a flight. It’ll have to be checked as luggage upon check-in at baggage drop. The good news is that the mattress itself creates protection around the poles, so that acts as padding in-flight.

Update: some parents reported having success in getting the Travel Crib Light into an overhead compartment, but unless you’re traveling on a large plane with very spacious overhead bins, I wouldn’t bank on this.

Take it around a room or through the house

Something that’s different is that the Graco Pack ‘n Play is much bulkier to move around once it’s folded up. Because the BabyBjorn Crib is so light, you can easily pick it up and move it around the house without collapsing it.

This is less possible and more of a chore with a Pack ‘n Play. Just ask my mom, who has had to move the one at her house from room to room when my niece and our child are visiting at the same time!

Figuring out the fold-up process

Many parents find that the entire crib is pretty snug when you put it into the transport case. After packing it a few times, we got more comfortable with the process. To be fair, we’ve needed a few times of practice with both the Pack ‘n Play and the Guava Lotus Crib as well, before getting the hang of it.

Cleaning the BabyBjorn Travel Crib

Accidents happen, so is this crib washable? The mesh siding and mattress cover are removable and machine washable for cleaning, which helps. The poles could be wiped clean with child-safe cleaning products.

The mattress cover can be washed on a hot setting. Remember to wash the sheet (on “warm”) before use!

Getting replacement parts

If you lose or damage the main parts of the Travel Crib Light , you can buy replacement parts at BabyBjorn.com like the mattress , an extra fitted sheet and the entire transport bag .

What is the BabyBjorn brand?

BabyBjorn is a brand I was first introduced to with my use of the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini , which Dan and I both used when our baby was a newborn. We liked the relative ease of use of the carrier, and versatility that it was a product for both moms and dads, and everyone in between. It let us tote our infant around Litchfield, Connecticut , and the Catskill Mountains , during weekends away.

From months 1-6, we also made great use of our BabyBjorn baby bouncer , which seemed to be a #1 pick among all our “parent friends.” This bouncer is so well-made and popular, it became a great product to plop our baby into when we’d visit friends’ houses. We’ve even considered taking it on road trips with a baby (but didn’t quite have the trunk space for it).

As we learned more about the brand, we saw BabyBjorn’s other baby carriers , products for sleep , kitchen items like feeding sets and potties for the bathroom . We’re about to read BabyBjorn’s blog about travel with a baby and see that other couples just like us are learning the ropes about how to leave home with a little one.

What we like about BabyBjorn products is that there aren’t too many of them . That’s right: the brand focuses on bestsellers and parent favorites in a few categories, and doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of products to make you second-guess your choices when checking out your cart.

BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light Review

Pros • Simple setup and take-down • Lightweight and easy to carry with a compact carrying case • Mattress is soft and comfy yet still firm

Cons • Won’t fit into most suitcases, so you have to check it separately at the airport

Bottomline The lightweight carrying case and firm but soft mattress makes this travel crib a breeze to bring to the airport or throw in the car. It’s super-easy to set up and provides a safe and comfortable place for baby to sleep whenever you’re away from home.

Rating: 4.5 stars

Being an avid traveler, I always imagined that I’d be jet-setting around with my kids when I finally had them. Then reality hit: With two babies only 18 months apart, the hassle of lugging around a crazy amount of baby gear and the fear of exhaustion from disrupted sleep schedules have kept me closer to home. And one of the biggest factors keeping me from taking those family trips I’d dreamed of was not wanting to carry heavy playards that I would then have to wrangle into place like I was playing a game of Twister. I’ve also worried that having to put my 5-month-old daughter—who was only just beginning to get over colic—to sleep in a travel crib would certainly lead to neither of us getting any sleep at all. Thankfully with the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light that wasn’t the case.

Getting this travel crib was a game changer for me. Not only is it compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry at the airport or throw into a car, but opening it up and folding it back down can both be done in under a minute. And the crib itself is super-comfy so baby (and by extension, you!) can get a good night’s rest.

The first trip we took with both kids was a baby step to test my comfort zone: a four-hour drive to visit my mother for the weekend. I loved how easy it was to pack the BabyBjörn—it comes in a black compact carrying case with handles, like a big briefcase. At only 32 inches long, 24 inches tall, and 44 inches wide, it doesn’t take up much trunk space. Plus, it weighs only about 13 pounds (which is about half of what the Pack ‘n Play weighs), so I could carry a baby in one arm and the playard in the other.

The setup was relatively frustration free, especially since I hate reading instructions and find no joy whatsoever in trying to figure out how to put things together. I need even more idiot-proof gear considering I have to also keep a constant eye on my toddler to prevent him from trying to hit his baby sister in the head or hurl a toy in her direction. Happily, I didn’t need to read any instructions (or watch any YouTube videos!) the first time I set up the crib. I simply unzipped the case, pulled out the crib frame that was nestled inside the folded mattress and snapped the legs into place. Then I clipped the mattress tabs onto the poles at each of the corners—that keeps the mattress from sliding around and helps with stability. Done!

Once it’s set up, the crib is very stable and doesn’t wobble, since the mattress rests on the floor and the frame has a wide base. I also like that the breathable mesh sides make it easy for me to see my daughter from any angle. The padded edges around the top rail make it more comfortable for me to lean over and soothe her—and they’ll make it safer when she starts standing, so she doesn’t bang her head. The mattress is soft, but also firm enough that I don’t worry about safety.

Folding up the crib took a few minutes to figure out because it wasn’t immediately intuitive to me that I had to pull the legs out and up in order to release them. But once I figured that out, I simply put the crib back into the case the way it came—by first placing the folded mattress inside and then tucking the collapsed crib frame into the center of the mattress so it was protected on the outside. Then I zipped up the case and threw it in the back of my car.

Performance

The real test was seeing if my daughter, Athena, would go to sleep in the crib. My husband and I refer to her as the “princess and the pea” because she does not like to be uncomfortable in any way—and lets us know it by her sharp cry. I did the same bedtime routine we do at home, which starts with bathtime and a baby massage. Then I turned on a sound machine app that I use on the iPad, plugged in the night light I brought, and put her Lullaby Gloworm doll in the crib.

She usually doesn’t go down very easily and I did have to rock her in my arms and sing to her for about 10 minutes, but when I placed her into the crib, she fidgeted for only a few minutes before falling asleep.

Athena still woke up a few times during the night as usual (though I fed her only once), but she went to bed on time, didn’t have much trouble falling back to asleep when she did rouse at night, and she awoke right on schedule at 7 a.m. I was thrilled that sleeping in the travel crib didn’t seem to disrupt her normal sleep routine.

Since I know that my daughter is comfortable in the crib and that it’s lightweight and easy to carry and set up, I even bring it with me for visits to friends’ houses during the day when they overlap with Athena’s naptime. I also sometimes use it as a playard in my living room; I put her in it with a few toys when I want to keep her contained (and protected from her 23-month-old brother).

is baby bjorn travel crib safe

I have the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light in Silver, and am really happy with the quality. The mesh material is durable and hasn’t snagged while letting you easily keep an eye on baby. The mattress cover can be removed for easy cleaning (love that it’s machine washable for when we have accidents!), and the mesh fabric also unzips so you can take it off and wash it easily.

The crib looks sleek and compact when set up, and I like the silver color, which gives it a luxe feel (it also comes in black, blue and pink/purple). The angled legs help the crib not take up a lot of space while giving baby plenty of room to sleep. The storage case is also really well made, and I like that it looks like a small suitcase when folded up so it fits easily under a bed or in a closet. When toting it around it can be carried like a briefcase, but I do wish it also had a backpack-style carrying option to make it easier to lug when my hands are full.

Fears about disrupting baby’s sleep schedule and the hassle of packing heavy gear may hinder some parents from traveling with baby—this was the case for me. The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light helps ease these concerns. The soft yet firm mattress gives babies a comfy place to sleep, and the lightweight, compact design with a sturdy storage case makes it easy to transport. You can assemble and disassemble the crib in under a minute to make setting up a portable nursery a snap when you’re away from home.

Babybjorn Travel Crib Review After 6 Countries of Testing (Not Sponsored)

The BabyBjorn travel crib (officially known as the Travel Crib Light ) is one of the best and most popular travel cribs you can buy. Super light weight, and super easy to set up and fold and get back in the bag when you’re done with it, it comes with a known brand and a ton of positive customer reviews.

Including our family!

I’ve used the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light in 6 different countries when my daughter was a baby. We tested it out traveling on planes, trains, and in automobiles (seriously!).

It’s great!

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light Review. The Baby Bjorn travel crib light sits in a hotel room near the window. A beautiful view of Bergamo, Italy is out the window.

Below, I share my Babybjorn travel crib light review, including the pros, cons, and how it compares to some other leading travel pack and play options . All of this is based on my personal experience using this crib, plus testing it against my “travel crib criteria” which I also used to evaluate the Guava Lotus Travel Crib and the Bugaboo Stardust playard .

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light Review Key Takeaways

  • Lightweight and compact, with its own easy to carry bag.
  • Easy to setup and takedown quickly.
  • Sturdy construction that sits well, without tipping or wobbling.
  • Comfy mattress that is comparable to the Guava Lotus and better than many other pack and play mattresses.
  • Breathable, with mesh fabric around the sides to allow airflow.
  • From a known brand with a strong history of safety and quality.
  • Machine washable, including the mattress cover.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified textiles.

  • Tough for short caregivers to place a baby in the crib due to a taller frame
  • Doesn't come with a bassinet option.
  • Not Greenguard Gold Certified.
  • It's not carry-on compliant for most airlines.

What is the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light (& How is it Different from Other Travel Cribs?)

The Babybjörn travel crib light is a super lightweight pack and play or play yard that’s great for using at home, toting across town to a friend’s house or the park, or on a big trip across the country or across the world.

Along with the Guava Family Lotus , it’s probably one of the most popular travel cribs on the market currently. And with good reason.

There’s a lot to love about this crib, including super easy set up and fold up, a strong and sturdy carry bag, and a soft and comfy mattress.

In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to other travel pack and plays in that it’s easy to use and transport.

At 13 pounds, however, it’s lighter than what I consider its closest competitor: the Guava Lotus . It’s also easier to set up and tear down, has faster drying fabric after a wash, and it fits into the carry bag better – it’s a great fit with no squishing required.

However, you do give up two key features of the Lotus when you choose Baby Bjorn .

First: the side zipper opening. I’d say this is one of the key differences between these two products, and is worth pointing out that the BabyBjorn doesn’t have a side opening. This is especially important to shorter people, such as myself (I’m 5 foot, and find it slightly challenging to lean all the way over and down to reach the mattress on the BabyBjorn).

Second, it doesn’t have a “converts to a backpack” carry bag like the Guava does, meaning you have to carry it with your hands, rather than a hands-free option on your back. This is fine for most trips, and the carry bag overall is excellent. But you might prefer the backpack feature of the Guava if you’re off on a months-long adventure or longer trip across multiple countries.

For a trip to a resort, I’d take our BabyBjorn travel crib lite . For a 3-month family backpacking trip across SE Asia, I’d take the Guava Lotus. If I was planning a 2-week Europe trip with a few different countries, it’s a toss up as to which I’d take. The Babybjorn is a bit easier to set up and tear down when changing hotels, but the Guava is a bit more compact for taking on trains, and the backpack carry bag is also extremely convenient.

Why Buy a Travel Crib such as the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light?

For me, a lightweight travel crib is a no brainer when traveling with a baby or toddler under 3. I say this as someone who first travelled with our baby without a travel pack and play, and then immediately went out and bought one to rectify the mistake. Here’s why I think investing in a travel crib makes sense:

  • It gives you more flexibility in terms of the type of accommodation you book. While many hotels have a limited number of cribs for guests to use, many short term apartment rentals do not. If you become a BYOTC (bring your own travel crib) family, you can book those short term apartments, which also gives you access to the other things families with babies often need: fridges, microwaves, etc.
  • You can take nap time on the go. When we were in Spain, we went to visit some friends during our daughter’s nap time by taking our BabyBjorn travel pack and play with us. She snoozed in their spare bedroom while we visited our buddies, and it was easy for us since it’s such a lightweight travel crib!
  • It removes “first come, first serve” stress at hotels. If you’re traveling to a resort or hotel, most have a first come, first serve policy for baby products such as cribs. There’s a chance you’ll show up and someone else has taking the last available crib, leaving you to figure out a panicked Plan B instead of enjoying your vacation.
  • Some hotels charge A LOT to use one of their baby cribs. When we were in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, some hotels wanted to charge us the equivalent of 30 Euros…PER NIGHT to rent their crib. Thankfully we had our BabyBjorn play yard on that trip.
  • Hygiene, cleaning and maintenance are an unknown with hotel cribs, but it’s something you can easily control for if you BYO. I’d rather have my own pack and play vs a crib I have no control over.

Detailed BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light Review

Portability and ease when traveling with it.

After a few years experience traveling with a baby, then toddler, and now preschooler, this is my top criteria against which I evaluate all “travel stuff for kids” – travel crib included.

Travel with a baby involves lugging around more stuff than I expected…plus you have to carry the baby, too.

Bringing a travel crib with you shouldn’t feel like a huge chore or downer. Quite the opposite, it should make your trip better by reducing uncertainty related to first-come, first-serve hotel crib rental policies, and help your baby feel they’re in a familiar place, even if you’re country hopping.

We travelled with and used the Babybjorn travel crib light with our baby in 6 countries (Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Spain, Austria, and Hungary), taking it on planes, trains, and in cars (rentals and taxis). Even though we already owned a travel crib (the Phil & Teds) we wanted to test out the BabyBjorn for this blog, so bought it before this trip so we could give it a proper 6-country test for this review!

I’m confident when I say the Travel Crib Light is very portable…I’ve tested it to make sure!

The slim profile of the carry bag means it’s easy to fit it into narrow spaces on luggage racks if you’re traveling by bus (even if it’s just an airport bus) or train. But, that slim profile means the overall footprint of the case (a rectangle that’s about 5.75″ thick and about 23.5″ x 18.5″) is bigger than the Lotus travel crib, for example.

Likely, you’ll need to check this as an extra piece of luggage when traveling – that’s what we did when we flew with it.

Setting It Up and Using It

In theory, a lightweight travel cot should improve your vacation. But that theory only holds true if it’s easy to use.

No one wants to arrive at their hotel after a long overseas flight with a screaming baby, only to struggle with the very baby gear they brought that was intended to make life easier.

Thankfully, the BabyBjorn travel crib ligh t is so, so easy to set up, and you can get that jet lagged, over tired baby to bed in mere minutes.

To see exactly how long it took me to set-up our BabyBjorn travel play yard, I asked my Google Home to time me with a stopwatch. This included everything you need to get it ready for your kiddo (except the sheet), from removing it from the bag to putting the mattress in and attaching it.

It took me 2 minutes and 9 seconds to set it up. That includes 41 seconds to unzip the bag and set up the crib with the mattress placed inside, and then another 1 minute and 28 seconds to attach the mattress with the hook and loop system.

While 2 minutes is fast on a “first try in a long time,” with a few practice tries I was able to get my setup much, much faster: 1 minute and 16 seconds on my second try.

In particular, I realized that if I push the crib over onto its side, I can get the hook and loop system used to secure the crib mattress to the frame way faster: I went from 1 minute 28 seconds on my first try, down to 17 seconds on my second try (with the crib on its side as pictured below).

Overall, this travel crib unfolds and sets up with incredible ease, as evidenced by how quickly I’m able to do it myself. The legs click in place easily, too.

My super fast set up is encouraging…but what about take down? And wrestling it back into the carry bag when vacation is over (or you’re on to your next destination)?

I again used my Google Home as a stop watch to time exactly how long it took me to collapse the play yard and put it all away (including getting it back into the carry bag).

The results of this test? It took 1 minute and 14 seconds. It took 12 seconds to unclip the mattress, 36 seconds to collapse the crib and tuck it into the folded mattress, and 26 seconds to get it all into the carry bag, and get that zipped up.

Collapsing the crib itself requires you to pull up from the middle of the base (with the mattress removed). To release the legs so they can fold, you simply give them a little tug downward, and they un-click and fold in easily. I was easily able to do all this by myself, and it doesn’t take any particular finesse or strength to do so. When I pulled on the legs, I immediately felt them release.

Getting it back into the bag was easy, and didn’t require any wrestling at all.

Based on my personal experience, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light fits back into its carry bag easier than the Guava Lotus does – it’s all a bit more smooth with less squishing down and holding to zip the zipper closed.

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light Mattress Review

When it comes to travel crib mattresses and pack and play mattresses, Babybjorn has long been the king of the “soft and comfy mattress” market.

However, I feel though this common comment about this travel crib may actually refer to a previous version of the travel crib (the Travel Crib Light 2, which is no longer available).

I know this because we’ve personally owned both an old version of this travel crib (2019) and a newer, current version. And if memory serves me, the mattress on the old version was much thicker than in this new version.

With currently available versions of the products I own or have recently tested, I feel like mattress thickness is actually a tie between the Guava Lotus mattress (which I measure to be 1.5″ thick) and the Babybjorn mattress (which I measure to be 1.25″ thick).

In my opinion, this is an improvement, as super thick, soft mattresses and babies aren’t a good combo , safety wise.

However, the fabric mattress cover on the BabyBjorn feels softer when I touch it.

The mattress is made of polyurethane foam. This is what it looks like when I pull away the mattress cover:

The mattress cover is waterproof (this is pretty standard in the travel cribs I’ve reviewed), so there’s no need to buy a separate mattress protector or cover. It’s made of a combination of polyester and polyurethane, as you can see on the mattress tag on our crib, shown below.

In the old version of the Babybjorn Travel Crib Light , I don’t remember having to attach the mattress to the frame. In this new version, however, there’s a hook and loop system.

The bottom of the mattress has a loop attached to each corner (the red things in the picture below).

You then hook the loops onto a hook attached to each corner of the travel crib frame to ensure the mattress doesn’t shift or lift, and generally stays in place as it should.

Once you get the hang of this, it’s pretty easy. As mentioned above, I find it easiest when I tip the crib onto its side.

If you’re worried your baby may be cold sleeping on a floor mattress, we tried to make it more comfortable by adding a folded blanket underneath the bottom of the crib (don’t put it in the crib!). It still needs to be a firm flat surface to place the crib on, and please don’t consider this a recommendation – simply something we tried.

Washing the Babybjorn Travel Crib Light

Traditional pack and plays are notoriously tough to clean, and can only be spot cleaned safely .

Not this BabyBjorn.

The fabric portion of the Babybjorn travel crib is machine washable on warm or cold (not hot), using a gentle or mild detergent. We use True Earth fragrance free detergent strips, and they work great.

To wash the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light , unclip the mattress from the frame, and remove the detachable feet from each of the four legs of the frame. They pull out very easily. In a side-by-side comparison, the feet of the BabyBjorn pulled out much easier for me than the Guava Lotus feet.

Then unzip the fabric along the top railing to remove the fabric unit completely from the frame. There’s a separate zipper on each of the four sides.

I like to wash pack and play fabric in a large mesh laundry bag , with a few towels thrown in. This helps protect it against snags. When I washed it, the fabric came out looking great, with no snags or signs of wear.

To dry, it’s hang to dry only: no tumble drier, please!

Out of curiosity, I timed how long it took the fabric to dry after washing. This is important if you’re on a trip and your baby has an accident in the crib, and you need to get it clean before the next nap or sleep. In my experience, huge amounts of vomit while on vacation is standard operating procedure for many babies, so ease of washing and speed to dry is key!

At the 2 hour mark, I felt the fabric and the side mesh and base fabric was dry enough that I’d feel okay temporarily putting it back on the frame for a nap. At the stage, the zippered sides which sit around the top of the frame still felt wet, but they were far dryer at this stage than the Guava Lotus padded sides were when I ran the same test on that crib.

After 3 hours of hanging to dry, the fabric felt almost completely dry, other than few lightly damp corners. If I wasn’t going to pack it away, I would have reassembled at this point and let me kid sleep.

Five hours after washing, the fabric felt totally dry and ready to be zipped back onto the frame. This was much faster than the same test I did with the Guava Lotus , which took 9 hours to dry completely under very similar climate conditions and just a few days apart. The padding that goes over the top frame of the Guava Lotus feels a bit thicker, and is possibly a different type of technical fabric. Whatever the reason, the Guava is much slower to dry – more than double the time of the BabyBjorn based on my testing.

(I did my time to dry test for the BabyBjorn and the Guava in the dead of winter, drying it inside my house on a drying rack. If you could hang outdoors in the summer, I expect both would dry faster than in my testing).

I also wondered how long it would take to put the fabric back on the crib frame, after machine washing. Once again, I set a timer and timed myself getting the fabric back on. It only took 1 minute 39 seconds to reassemble.

Everything about this travel crib (setup, take down, re-assembling after washing) is just so, so fast…under 2 minutes for each.

Worth noting, the mattress cover can also be machine washed. I appreciate this, as the mattress cover on the Lotus travel crib isn’t removable or washable.

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light Frame Review

The Babybjorn travel crib light has a sturdy frame, with an angled set up whereby the top is a bit narrower than the base for stability ( the Guava Lotus travel crib has the same general shape to it). There’s a difference of roughly 10″ from top (narrower) to bottom (wider) on both the length and the width.

When I shake the frame on the BabyBjorn travel crib , I can feel and see the legs wobble somewhat from the upper joints, but it’s very sturdy and not tippy. Because the mattress sits on the floor, there is no upper weight limit for use , unlike more traditional pack and plays, such as the 4moms Breeze. My daughter would stand in our travel crib and it was fine, but stop using a pack and play once they start to try climbing out .

Once setup, the frame stands about 25 inches tall. I am exactly 5 foot tall, and I think anyone shorter than 5 foot will likely have trouble bending all the way over to reach the mattress in the crib.

I can bend over the crib and reach the mattress – and I just make it – but it’s not the most comfortable to be honest, and if I had an infant in my arms I would be a bit nervous.

You can see me reaching into the BabyBjorn crib in the photo below, and how the top rail of the crib touches me right below the bottom of my rib cage.

If both caregivers are on the shorter side, or you are short and expect to use this on your own with a newborn who can’t yet sit up or doesn’t have neck control yet, this might not be the best choice for you.

If you are super short like me, and have a baby that can’t sit or stand yet, I recommend either the Guava Lotus or the Phil & Teds Traveller . They are both around the same height as the BabyBjorn travel cot (25.5″ for the Guava and 25″ for the Phil & Teds) but both have a side zip door which you can use to place your baby or get them out. We used the Phil & Teds for a few months starting when my daughter was 5 months, and that’s how I got her in and out every time. It worked great, and the Guava has the same system. Overall, the Guava would be my choice between Phil and Teds vs Guava Lotus, as its much easier to setup.

Once my daughter was older, I didn’t have any problem lifting her out of the crib from sitting or standing, or placing her standing, into the BabyBjorn crib .

Color Choices

Unlike some of its closest competitors, the Babybjorn travel crib light comes in a few color choices. Silver and black are most common and most widely available, and we really liked the light and airy design and look of our silver one.

However, if you’re really stuck on getting it in a bolder color, BabyBjorn sells it in a dark green color on their website (although, at the time of writing it was unfortunately listed as out of stock).

What About Safety?

All cribs, travel cribs, and play yards sold in the United States have to meet federal safety standards. The trick is to looking for any “over and above” safety features companies offer.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is JMPA certified, which is an optional certification requiring the product be independently tested to meet ASTM standards.

From JMPA’s website:

“To become certified, each product is sample-tested at an independent laboratory to verify it meets the highest standards for safety, performance and functionality.

JPMA Certification is voluntary, and based on adherence to ASTM standards, federal and state laws and some retail requirements. The program is designed to provide peace of mind to parents that these products have been independently tested to the most stringent standards.”

It also uses OEKO TEX Standard 100 fabric. This means the fabric components of the travel crib have been tested to be free from harmful substances and chemicals.

There are few design aspects that also appear to lend themselves to safety, including:

  • Mesh sides, which allow a good amount of airflow through the crib, and may help to keep your baby cool in hotter climates.
  • A floor standing mattress, which helps ensure stability while also allowing the product to be ultra lightweight (most pack n plays have a built in platform the mattress sits on, but that adds a lot to weight).
  • The “triangular” shape to the frame, with the wider base and narrower top. Again, this should add to the stability of the design.

Unfortunately, this travel crib isn’t Greenguard Gold Certified. To be fair, most travel cribs and pack and plays aren’t. But, the Guava Lotus travel crib is, which is a nice to have (although, the Lotus doesn’t use Oeko TEX certified fabrics, so it’s a trade-off.

Final Thoughts

We loved our BabyBjorn travel crib for our own family, and were so happy to have it on a trip of a lifetime when our daughter was a baby.

These days, there are more options available, but the BabyBjorn still stands out as one of the best choices for ease of use, portability, quality, and safety .

The price is one of the huge drawbacks to this product, and it’s certainly not a budget choice.

However, if you’re looking for a high quality travel crib, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light was a great choice for our family, and think it will be for many other families as well. I do recommend you buy the bundle with the fitted sheet, as crib sheets are too large to use with this, and you want a proper, snug fit for safety.

Winner: Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light and the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib are both top-of-the-line options for families looking for a high-quality pack and play. We liked both cribs during lab and at-home testing, naming the BabyBjörn Best for Travel and picking the Lotus Travel Crib as Best Compact in our lab test of the best pack and plays. Ultimately, both models have handy features and are lightweight, but the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib made a stronger impression with its backpack carrying bag and side zipper.

Keep reading for our in-depth comparison of the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light versus the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib.

BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

Who It’s For: Simple yet sturdy, the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is best suited for busy families that prioritize saving time. Assembling and collapsing this pack and play is quick and easy, and the fabric can effectively be spot cleaned without having to put it into the washing machine. It also fits into the included travel bag for portability.

Dimensions: 32 x 44 x 24 inches | Weight: 13 pounds | Storage bag: Yes | Wheels: No

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

Who It’s For: The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is ideal for families that are frequent fliers. In addition to being lightweight (it’s only 11 pounds), it was the only model in our pack and play test with a travel bag that can be carried as a backpack or on a shoulder. If you’re wrangling children through the airport or into the car, it’s helpful to have the option to carry the crib hands-free. Plus, it’s compact when folded for easy storage.

Dimensions: 46 x 31 x 25.5 inches | Weight: 11 pounds | Storage bag: Yes | Wheels: No

Winner: BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

Both travel cribs were easy to assemble in well under three minutes, but the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib was trickier to collapse. To set it up, the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light simply needed to have the legs popped into place before testers sprung it open and slipped in the thin mattress. (For bedtime and naps, you should also put a crib sheet on the mattress before inserting it into the playard.) Collapsing it took just over 4.5 minutes, and we needed to refer to the manual a few times.

The Guava Family Lotus was similarly easy to assemble without a manual. We extended the aluminum legs and pulled the crib's sides open until they clicked into place. Taking down the pack and play, however, was more of a challenge. “Collapsing the legs … took a little while,” a lab tester noted, while our at-home tester added that since the folding process was not intuitive, she was repeatedly searching online tutorials. Strapping in the mattress to secure it to the crib took a while, too.

Verywell Family / Leticia Almeida

The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib edges out the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light for compactness and portability due to its lighter weight and handy dual-use carrying bag, although both cribs are solid options in this category. Weighing just 11 pounds—or 15 pounds when in the travel bag, according to the brand—the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is very light. It also folds to half of its size and “doesn't take up a lot of space to store,” earning it a spot as the Best Compact pick in our lab test. When it comes to portability, the folded pack and play fits into the included travel bag, which can be worn on a caregiver’s back like a backpack or on a shoulder. In testing, we found that the crib's light weight makes it easy enough to move around a room, even though it lacks wheels.

The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is not much heavier at 13 pounds (not including the travel bag), and we had no problem moving it around. In the lab, we did find that “the red ties on the legs catch on [the] carpet when you drag it across,” and the crib doesn’t have wheels. Like the Guava, it comes with a zippered carrying bag for toting it through the airport or storing it in a closet, though the bag doesn’t have a backpack option.

Winner:  BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

After spot-cleaning both cribs as part of our lab test, we decided that the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is the best in this category since it can be spot cleaned without leaving a stain. To assess how easy the pack and plays are to clean, we intentionally spilled applesauce on the fabric. Spot cleaning the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light was just a matter of wiping off the muck. For deeper cleaning, the crib’s fabric is also detachable and can be put in the washing machine. On the other hand, the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib wasn’t as easy to spot clean, with the material absorbing some of the liquid from the applesauce and cleaner, leaving a stain. Luckily, the fabric is also removable and machine washable, so it can be thoroughly cleaned, but it will take longer.

Winner:  Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

There are a few design features on both cribs that are worth mentioning. The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light comes in a couple of color options, while the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is only available in one color combination. Both travel cribs come with a thin mattress included, and while some testers wished the mattresses were thicker for added comfort, the mattresses are thin and firm to comply with safe sleep guidelines. One unique feature we really appreciate in the Guava Family Lotus is the way one side of the crib unzips, helping caregivers put their babies down without hurting their backs and turning the travel crib into a play space for supervised toddlers. This zipper, plus the sleek aluminum legs, helps the Guava Family edge out the BabyBjörn to win Best Design. However, both pack and plays are solid, well-made options.

Winner: Tie

Both travel cribs are priced similarly, with the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib costing $280 and the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light going for $280-$300, depending on the retailer. Each pack and play requires you to buy crib sheets from the brand separately. The Guava sheets cost an additional $25, while the BabyBjörn sheets are an extra $30 and can also be purchased in a bundle with the crib itself for $310. Ultimately, the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is slightly less costly, but both models are a similar investment.

What You Can Expect to Pay

When shopping for a travel crib or playard, you can find more basic options for around $100, while models with more features can cost up to $400. Most of the best pack and plays that we recommend fall into the $100-$300 range, and we think the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is reasonably priced at $280. When picking the best option for your family, consider how long you will need it and how often you intend to use it, in addition to the features and capabilities that matter most to your family.

How do I get my travel crib onto a plane?

Taking a travel crib with you on a plane flight will look a little different depending on the airline you’re flying with. Some airlines require all pack and plays to be checked before going through security, which may cost an additional baggage fee. Other airlines may allow you to check it gate side for free or even take it as a carry-on if it fits the size requirements. Similarly, rules for taking strollers and car seats on planes will vary by airline, so make sure to do some research before flying with your little one (and all of their gear).

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light Review

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light Carrybag

If so, you should consider the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light

So, what is so good about the Travel Crib?

For those who do not have time to read my full review click here to go to amazon

HOW LIGHT AND PORTABLE IS THE CRIB?

As the name suggests, it is light, weighing in at just 13lbs , and it folds up in to a carry bag, which makes it super easy to carry with one hand, leaving you a hand available to hold your baby, or other luggage.

Any travel crib has to be easy to assemble and put down, otherwise it gets left at home and not used, and the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light does not disappoint in that regard :

HOW EASY IS IT TO SET UP THE TRAVEL CRIB?

It is exceptionally easy and quick to set up, it takes just a few seconds to open up the bag, and the spring loaded legs go in to action.  Just pop in the mattress and sheet, and you are ready to go.   When you have a tired baby at the end of the day, this is a godsend!

AND HOW EASY IS IT TO FOLD?

As with the set up, it is also pretty quick to dismantle, and just involves removing the mattress, turning the crib over, unclipping each of the legs, and folding them in.  Just put the mattress, and then the crib, in the carry bag, and you’re good to go.

HOW SOLID DOES IT FEEL?

Unlike cheaper travel cribs, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light feels very sturdy, and the mattress feels substantial , which is what you want for your baby or toddler.   The built in rigid base makes the crib sturdy and wobble-free .  It also helps that it is slightly tapered, ie the base is slightly larger than the top, so this helps keep it stable and safe.

Just watch out though, as it can be easy to trip up on the legs, as they do stick out, but you’ll soon get used to it.  Try to make sure you don’t set the crib up in a narrow area where you need to squeeze past.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

Not only will it last your first child for 3 years, you can then use it again for your second child, and probably your third, if you go there!  This makes it great value for money, if you are able to re-use it, and then it not as expensive as it could be.  It can be very frustrating to have to buy new equipment for each new baby!

CAN YOU SEE BABY EASILY?

is baby bjorn travel crib safe

Another great feature of this crib is that the sides are made of a light and airy mesh fabric , which allows you to see in to your baby, and your baby to see out, and is breathable, which again is highly important to me.  The mesh goes all the way down to the mattress, so there are no concerns about baby not being able to breathe in the crib, and there is nowhere for the little one to hide!

DOES IT SMELL?

The fabric used feels great, and doesn’t smell, which can happen with cheaper cribs.  The Baby Bjorn crib uses natural, organic fabrics which are free from allergenic substances , which is important to know.  I personally don’t want my baby next to fabric with potentially harmful fumes.

Click here for great prices on the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib

HOW DO YOU CLEAN A BABY BJORN TRAVEL CRIB?

Machine wash ability is a big must for me, as babies do tend to make a mess don’t they?  The mesh fabric and the breathable, waterproof mattress cover are both removable and can be machine-washed, along with the sheet that you will use.  The crib doesn’t come with a sheet, however Baby Bjorn do have an organic sheet which can be bought separately.  Alternatively you can use your own sheet with this crib (the Baby Bjorn organic sheet is lovely, but very  expensive).

WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?

Apart from the sturdy tapered design, which keeps it upright, the mattress is made from flame retardant materials, without having the toxic chemicals in them, which are still legal in the US.  Baby Bjorn have gone above and beyond to make their products as safe as possible.   You can see here what they say on their website about this.

WHAT AGE IS THE CRIB SUITABLE FOR?

Baby Bjorn market this crib as suitable for newborn up to three years , although interestingly there is no upper weight limit, unlike most other cribs.  Baby Bjorn say on their website that it is fine for even adults to stand in, however as soon as your child is able to climb out, it is time to stop using it, so you can expect it to last until your child is 3 or thereabouts.  It will depend on how tall and agile your child is.

WHAT COLORS DOES IT COME IN?

At the moment, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light is available in 4 colors: silver, black, dark blue and pink/purple.  They all look good, but my favorite is the silver because it can be used for either a boy or a girl.

ANYTHING ELSE?

My only comments would be, apart from thinking this is probably one of the best travel cribs ever, are these:

The mattress is virtually on the ground , so although a newborn is light, you still have to lean right over and inside to pick them up.  If this isn’t an issue to you, that’s good.  If it is, you may want a bassinet for when your baby is young, and move to this crib when they are a bit older.  When your baby can sit up or stand it is a lot easier to reach in and get them out.

Your baby is sleeping really close to the ground, which is fine when you are at Grandma’s, but in hotels you may want to re-consider, depending on the hotel.  If I am concerned I put a towel or blanket on the floor below the crib, just to make me feel better!

IS THIS THE BEST TRAVEL CRIB TO FLY WITH?

The carry bag is too large to take on a plane as hand luggage , so it will need to be checked in, which can be expensive if you take it as a separate piece of luggage.  A much better way is to pack it in a larger suitcase, if you have used up your bag allowance, and put other baby things in the same suitcase.

No problems with the carry bag if you are going by road, as the bag will easily fit into the trunk of a car.

VITAL STATISTICS

Weight (including carry bag): 13 lb/6 kg Mattress: 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in/60 x 105 x 3 cm. Assembled: 32 x 44 x 24 in/82 x 112 x 64cm. Folded up in bag: 19 x 23.5 x 5.5 in/49 x 60 x 14 cm.

A fitted mattress is included.

The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light is lightweight, portable, sturdy and safe, as well as looking good and long lasting, hence the price is at the top end, but if you are going to be using a travel crib a reasonable amount, it is money well spent.  However, If you do a lot of your traveling by plane, consider your luggage options before you buy this, and be prepared with a larger suitcase, so you can maximize your luggage allowance, and don’t end up with additional baggage fees.

Wow! I love this travel crib! There was nothing like it available when I was having babies. We had a port-a-crib, but it weighed a ton and was a pain to put together. Now my kids are getting married and starting families. I will definitely keep this in mind for them. I might be a good one to keep at Grandma’s house, too. It wouldn’t take up much space.

' src=

Thanks for stopping by Marge – I think you children will definitely appreciate this crib when the time is right, or as you said, you could keep one at home in readiness

' src=

This is a fantastic review – when I was traveling with my kids, we had a pop-up travel crib – but that goes with all the difficulty of getting it folded up by twisting it the right way etc. This looks a whole lot simpler!

Thanks for your comment Dawn, you are right, the Baby Bjorn Travel crib is very simple to assemble and re-assemble, I’ve never been good at the pop-up versions either

' src=

Could it also double as a playpen? My parents have a house full of breakable items and that makes it hard to visit them.

Thanks for your question Elizabeth, and yes, it definitely can be used as a playpen as well

' src=

This seems way more convenient than a pack n play. I like your suggestion about putting down a blanket under the crib since it touches the floor. I’m a bit of a germophobe so that’s a great idea!

' src=

I really like the features of visibility – in and out of the crib. I also like that the product is made of safe materials – so important to not breathe in those toxic fumes that some cheaper products have.

' src=

I like the idea that it can be used for a playpen as well, perfect that it light sounds like it would be the right gift for my niece. One that she would find really useful.

' src=

I am going to echo one of your other commenters above and say that this looks like a perfect solution for me (a soon to be gradma). You’ve pointed out a lot of other benefits in the article that I hadn’t thought about as well, thank you!

' src=

I was looking for some good baby shower gift ideas … this looks like a great one! Like some of the comments above, I would have sought out this travel crib when my kids were little. It looks much easier to use and safer than what we had. And we did travel a lot. Thanks for the review!

' src=

Very nice for traveling. I like that it is light weight and will fold up into a bag. Also that the fabric is see through for Mother and baby, It sounds like it would be cooler as well.

' src=

We had the Graco Pack n Play and it worked quite well, but this looks like an improvement. Much lighter and more packable. I wonder is it easy for the child to tip over if they get extra active?

I was searching for a proper explanation on Sides of a Travel Cot. Thanks, admin, for sharing such wonderful content on this topic. To know more you may check this site where given relevant information about it. Seeoutdoor

My 5 Favorite Travel Cribs to Bring on Vacation

A s a longtime travel writer, I had my streamlined travel routine perfected. And then I had a baby, and had to reimagine what it took to travel. A surprisingly big part of that adjustment was finding gear like travel cribs (along with strollers and baby carriers), things that would allow all of us to sleep safely, if not always soundly.

As I started researching and then testing the travel cribs, I realized the best of the best are part comfort, part portability, and all magic. Because there’s a lot to consider when you’re on the hunt for the right portable crib—you want it to be small enough that it’s easy to pack into a car or onto an airplane, but big enough that your baby will be able to sleep comfortably and safely in it on vacation until they’re ready to transition into a big-kid bed .

There’s also the ease-of-set-up factor: A lesson I only needed to learn once is that no one needs to be wrestling with a portable baby bed in the middle of the night in a desperate effort to transition a sleeping little one from the car seat to travel crib.

The Best Travel Cribs to Bring on Vacation

Find the right travel crib and suddenly sleeping away from home feels at least 60 percent more manageable. With that in mind, I put together this list of my favorite travel cribs on the market and given you the details you need to make an informed decision. 1. Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

Anyone considering the Baby Bjorn Travel Light Crib should also consider the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib . These two travel cribs are similar in many ways, but each offers compelling unique features. The Lotus Travel Crib packs into a lightweight and very portable shape, a narrowish boxy case that comes with both an over-the-shoulder carrying strap and comfortable backpack straps that make it easy to travel with.

ON THE ROAD:  How to Safely Road Trip with a Baby (and Make it Fun)

Set-up is quick (not quite as quick as the Baby Bjorn, but still simple, straightforward, and fast), as is takedown. The mattress is fairly thin (it adheres to the current federal standards for safety) but has nice padding that keeps babies and toddlers comfortable all night long. It has a nice wide opening and, best of all, a zippered side door that’s hugely useful if you find it hard (or painful) to carefully lower a sleeping baby into the travel crib.

Reviewers also note that it’s handy to be able to do in-place middle-of-the-night diaper changes or feedings. And, the zippered side means that it’s hours of fun during awake time. My kids regularly used it as a playhouse during the day, which was great on trips when toys were minimal.

2. Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light

The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light has a lot of fans. It sits securely on the ground, so there’s not a lot of squeaking and rocking as babies get more mobile. I love how it’s remarkably easy to set up and take down—you just sort of fold it open and it pops up, and when you’re ready to store it in its carrying case, you do the reverse movement. The mattress is generously padded and comfortable but not to the point where you need to stress about it being dangerously squishy. And, the mesh sides maintain good circulation, which means it’s not a big deal if your baby (like mine) is one of those who loves to sleep with their face right up against the side of the crib.

BABY CARRIERS: 7 Best Baby Carries for Traveling the World with Little Ones

Another bonus: Since it sits on the ground, there’s no upper weight limit. Baby Bjorn simply suggests that your kid is too old for it when they can climb over the sides. All materials are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 for baby products, which means they’re not going to irritate skin. This Baby Bjorn travel cot weighs 13 pounds (6 kg) and stores into what looks like a smaller suitcase, so it’s relatively easy to carry. The mattress cover and crib fabric can be removed and laundered, which you know is going to be necessary at some point.

3. Chicco LullaGo

When my kids were babies, I had a rule: If it made my life 20 percent easier for at least a month, it was worth a bit of added expense. And while buying a separate travel bassinet knowing that you’ll need to upgrade to a standard-size travel crib counts as an added expense, for many people, a bassinet you can use at home and take on the road is priceless. Especially in those first few months when you’re getting used to parenthood and want to keep your baby close but safe when you sleep.

TRAVEL STROLLERS: 10 Durable Travel Strollers That Are Surprisingly Lightweight

Chicco’s LullaGo bassinet series includes the Lullago Nest (featuring a canopy with toys) and the travel-friendly Chicco LullaGo Anywhere . The travel-sized bassinet can be used for babies up to 20 pounds (or when they can push up onto hands and knees, at which point the lower sides become a safety issue).

While it’s not a single solution to the portable crib conundrum, it does serve its limited-time purpose extremely well. It’s bed height, so it can nestle up close while providing baby with a safe space to sleep, giving you the benefits of co-sleeping without the danger. Because it’s elevated, it’s generally a bit warmer and it’s also much easier to get baby in and out, a major plus during those months babies have frequent naps during the day and frequent waking at night. Packed down, it’s long but fairly flat, and has a carrying case with a strap.

4. Graco Travel Pack n Play Playard

In the world of portable cribs, there’s perhaps no better-known option than Graco’s Pack ‘n Play series. These “playards” work for daytime play, naptime, overnights, and travel. There are different models with an assortment of bells and whistles including built-in mobiles and changing areas, but for travel use, simpler tends to be better (and lighter). Both my babies were regular nappers in Graco’s playard, and there was one set up in my bedroom for a full two years—this little workhorse remained sturdy and in good shape for the whole time.

Among the best travel Pack ‘n Play options is the Pack ‘n Play On the Go Playard . The On the Go features an included full-sized bassinet add-on that’s great for younger babies, which makes this a two-in-one travel crib option. It’s easy to set up and take down, and traveling families in particular appreciate the light weight.

5. Nuna Sena Aire Travel Crib

The highly reviewed and much praised Nuna Sena Aire Travel Crib is a travel crib with a slightly higher price tag, but it delivers serious value and can be a single solution to the travel crib challenge. The Nuna Sena Aire is beloved for its easy one-hand open, exceptional travel crib mattress, and stability.

BABY ON A BIKE: 8 Best Baby Bike Seats and Trailers

The sleeping surface can be placed at bassinet or crib height, which allows it to grow with your baby. The Sena Aire has a padded, ventilated, organic mattress. And, unlike most travel cribs, this one comes with sheets (most of the time, you have to buy sheets separately). Its unusual eight-legged system is hyper-stable and skid-free, but also really easy to set up. When I borrowed one to test it out I really liked it as a parent, and my baby slept well, which I took to be a five-star review on the infant front.

  • Placing a sheet on the mattress might be difficult as the corners tend to get slightly pulled up.

Unique Features

Following are some of the unique features of this crib:

  • Zipped side door – as mentioned before, this is one of its best features, which is a rare feature in most lightweight cribs.
  • Eco-health and safety  – the Greenguard gold standard certification indicates that this crib has been thoroughly tested for chemical emissions and has passed with flying colors. Most importantly, this is the only crib to receive this rigorous certification, giving it 10 out of 10 for eco-health.
  • Backpack carry-case  – this is another unique feature of this crib. It can be carried around like a backpack, which makes it easy for you to carry your baby and handle the rest of the luggage.
  • Price and size  – the price of this crib is reasonable, considering its high quality, safety, and convenience. It weighs only 13 lbs and the size of the mattress is 42 x 24-inch. This makes it highly compact when it is folded to carry around easily.

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light Overview

is baby bjorn travel crib safe

It comes with a carry-on bag with sturdy and comfortable handles. The crib can be easily and quickly folded and placed in the bag, which gives it a plus point.

Following are some of the pros of this travel crib:

  • It has a net side panel so you can keep a watch on your baby at all times.
  • The mattress is easily removable and machine washable.
  • This travel crib is also super light and can be folded up, making it rather portable.
  • The sides of the crib are also made from mesh, which means you can keep an eye on your baby. It also gives your baby a breathable, comfortable and airy area to sleep and play in.

Cons of Baby Bjorn Travel Crib :

Following are some of the cons of this travel crib:

  • The price of this travel crib is higher as compared to the other travel cribs offering similar benefits.
  • The walls of the crib are higher, making it slightly difficult for you to bend and place your baby inside.
  • It doesn’t come with a sheet.
  • This crib doesn’t have a zipped side door.
  • The carry-on bag is convenient, but the Lotus backpack makes it easier for the parents to carry around the crib.

Eco-friendliness  – the crib is eco-friendly and free from harmful substances. It has been approved by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification.

Which Is Right For You?

Let’s break it down further to determine which crib is right for you.

These cribs offer higher safety as compared to the travel cribs by other brands. However, while Baby Bjorn has Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, the Lotus travel crib has the highest safety score. It is the only crib which is GreenGuard Gold Certified.

Therefore, if the safety of the crib is your top priority and you want to ensure that the travel crib you use is non-toxic, then Lotus is perfect for you.

Portability

Again, both these travel cribs are portable as they come with a carry-on bag.

The Baby Bjorn easily folds into a briefcase-style carry bag, which is around 5.5” inches wide. It has soft handles that are sturdy enough not to rip off easily. On the other hand, the Lotus travel crib comes with a backpack-style carry case, which is a bit wider than 7” inches.

The main difference is the construction of the carry cases. The one that comes with the Lotus travel crib gives you a hands-free option, which can be a major life-saver while tackling luggage and carrying your baby during your travels.

If you are looking for high portability and convenience, then you should go with the Lotus travel crib.

Ease of Setup

When you are traveling, easy setup and takedown is one of the top factors for travel cribs. You might be on the go every day, which means you don’t want to get stick with a travel crib which takes ages to set up and fold.

Fortunately, both Lotus and Baby Bjorn travel cribs are designed for fast and easy setup. You can assemble and fold these cribs quickly to provide your baby a comfortable space to rest and play. Both cribs have all the parts built-in, so there isn’t a need to spend time building the crib. Instead they can easily be deployed in a few seconds as soon as they are out of the bag.

However, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib is a few seconds faster to set up as compared to the Lotus crib. Moreover, it has easy an folding, clicking and securing feature that can be done quickly.

If easy setup is your priority, then opt for the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib.

These travel cribs are designed to enhance the safety and comfort levels of your baby. Both products have mesh sides, making them breathable for your child and easy for you to keep an eye out for them.

The one major design feature that is a big difference between these two travel cribs is the zipped side door! Almost the entire side of the crib unzips and opens up to make it easy for you to place your baby inside or cuddle up.

This feature also makes this crib a fun play area for your baby or toddler. It gives your child more room and freedom to move around and play, making it a less confined area.

When it comes to design, the zipped side door of the Lotus travel crib enhances its functionality and makes it superior to the Baby Bjorn travel crib.

Lastly, both of these brands are extremely reliable and offer high quality products. However, the Baby Bjorn crib offers a two-year warranty, whereas Lotus offers a one-year warranty.

Although both Lotus Travel Crib and Baby Bjorn Travel Crib have numerous similarities, the former is a reliable option when the two are compared.

The zipped side door of Lotus makes it easy to interact with your baby or toddler as compared to bending over the Baby Bjorn crib. The backpack-style carry case is highly convenient for you to carry around on the go, leaving your hands free to tackle other luggage and carry your baby.

Indeed, a right travel crib for you would be based on your unique needs and requirements. Both these cribs are rated among the top reliable and safe travel cribs for babies and toddlers. Therefore, you can select either one of them, based on your preferences on size, versatility and cost.

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light for frequent travelers and Pack n Play for those who seldom travel and are on a budget.

So what’s the difference between a Baby Bjorn Travel Crib vs Pack n Play?

It basically comes down to price and convenience.

The Baby Bjorn is more expensive but is much lighter and easier to clean than a Graco Pack N Play.

But what the latter lacks, makes up for its features and accessories. A pack n play can become a great crib alternative. Some pack n play models come with storage, organizers, bouncer and a whole lot more.

Check out a more detailed info on the Graco Pack n Play vs Baby Bjorn Travel Crib.

Difference Between Graco Pack n Play vs Baby Bjorn Travel Crib

The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib when assembled, measures ‎44 x 25 x 32 inches and weighs 13 lbs/6 kg (including carry bag).

The pack n play or playards on the other hand, have sizes ranging from from 28″ to 41″ in length, 28.5″ to 39″ in width and 29″ to 41″ in height.

Their weight varies too, depending on the model and the number of accessories it has.

In general, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib is more lightweight and portable, making it easier to bring on trips and vacations.

Baby Bjorn has only 1 travel crib in their selection and it comes with its own mattress and transport bag.

Pack ‘n plays on the other hand, have so many types and models!

For this comparison article though, we will only focus on Graco, the brand synonymous with the word pack ‘n play.

Graco playards ranges from simple to those that comes with the full bells and whistle – removable seat, bassinet, diaper changing table, storage, toy mobile and more.

You can check out some of those types below:

Graco Pack ‘n Play Quick Connect Playard with Portable Bouncer

is baby bjorn travel crib safe

The Baby Bjorn mattress is softer and much more comfortable than a pack n plays. It’s much more cushioned and provides more padding.

Pack n plays’ mattresses are usually thin and less firm and can get lumpy overtime.

But both mattresses are safe to use when safety protocols and regulations are followed.

Mattress Sheets

You can choose to get the Baby Bjorn travel crib with it’s waterproof and breathable mattress cover.

Pack n plays don’t usually come with a mattress cover.

So if you want to get one, check first with the manufacturer or the store (where you got your pack n plays) about the brand of sheet to buy for the mattress.

An ill-fitting sheet can become a safety issue and might accidentally cover your kid and suffocate them while sleeping.

It’s easy to find pack n play or travel crib sheets online but always check if it’s the right size.

Travel Crib Fitted Sheets Compatible Baby Bjorn

Fitted Pack N Play Playard Sheet

Also always buy some extra mattress sheets, as kids can cause a lot of mess – diaper blowouts , spit-ups, vomits etc.

Portability

Both can be portable in their own ways.

But when it comes to a more lightweight packing and carrying, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib is hands down so much better than a pack n play.

It’s easier to fold and store plus it only weighs 13 lbs/6 kg.

It can even fit in a huge luggage!

Which is very helpful, especially if you don’t want to pay additional baggage fees and you frequently travel with your little one.

Pack n plays can be portable too as some come with its carrying case and wheels, but it’s much heavier than the travel crib.

You need to check this in separately, if you’re traveling by plane.

Assembling the BabyBjorn Travel Crib is way easier and faster than a pack n play.

One mom even mentioned that she was able to assemble it in less than 10 minutes while holding her very active baby!

Pack n plays are not that difficult to assemble but it does take more time, compared to the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light.

Pack n plays have multiple uses – overnight sleeping, napping, travel crib, playpen.

And depending on the model, it can also be used as a bassinet, for changing diapers, for storing and organizing diapers and small baby stuff.

Some even come with a portable bouncer and vibrating seat!

Other playard brands can even fit in twins comfortably such as the Joovy Room²-Playard, Portable-Playard .

The BabyBjorn travel crib on the other hand is only used for sleeping.

It can’t be used as a playpen, as it has a narrower top, which gives it a weird, claustrophobic feeling for playing.

Accessories

The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light doesn’t come with any accessory.

While the pack n play has tons!

Depending on the model, it can come with a toy mobile, diaper changing table, bassinet, organizer, even a vibrating seat and many more!

The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light has a sleek, minimal look which I think is more aesthetically pleasing than a pack n play.

Pack n play designs and colors are usually very loud and lively.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is waaaay more expensive than a pack n play.

Some pack n plays come with so many accessories but it’s still not as expensive as the BabyBjorn Travel Crib so you might consider that.

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib vs Pack n Play: Similarities

Baby Bjorn travel crib comes with an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification . It means that all fabrics that come in contact with your child are baby-safe materials.

Graco Pack n Plays are also in compliance with government standards.

There is no weight limit for the BABYBJORN Travel Crib Light as the mattress is on the floor.

It’s safe to use as long as your kid can stay inside it and is not attempting to climb out of it.

Pack n plays are also the same but it does have a weight limit of 30 lb (14 kg) and height limit 35 in (89 cm).

Personally though, I know of families who’ve used their pack n plays until their kid was 4 years old. Kid was mellow, never tried to climb out of it or anything tricky so it really depends on your children.

Both the Pack n Plays and the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib are very durable and sturdy.

The BabyBjorn’s travel crib’s base keeps it standing firmly on the floor.

While Pack n Plays are trusted to be more durable as some models have bassinets in them, which can be used for newborns.

Which means they have to strictly follow government regulations and be as stable and heavy-duty as much as possible.

Plus some pack ‘n plays carry a lot of accessories so sturdiness is a non-negotiable.

Both comes with a carrying case and can be folded for storing when not needed.

Tips and Tricks: Baby Bjorn Travel Crib vs Pack n Play

• Bring your sheets when traveling

Change can be hard for little ones and they will mostly miss their home environment or their bed when traveling.

For them not to miss the “smell of home,” some parents advised to bring your sheets, instead of using the hotel’s.

The familiar scent of your pack n play or travel crib’s mattress cover might soothe your little one’s fear of being away from home.

It might help them sleep in an unfamiliar place, especially if you’re traveling while sleep training .

• Put climbers in a sleep sack

This is a great hack for kids who are trying to climb out of their pack n play, especially the tall and/ or adventurous ones. I wish I thought of this before!

Use it to deter them from climbing out of their pack n plays or travel crib.

• BabyBjorn travel crib is allowed in Canada

If you’re traveling to Canada with your little ones, take note that they have a lot of restrictions when it comes to bringing baby gears.

They’ve banned a lot of products including baby walkers, drop side cribs and such.

I t’s not definite if pack n plays are allowed , since Health Canada doesn’t approve them for sleep.

But the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is allowed, as it’s considered a portable crib.

• Consider your back

A BabyBjorn’s mattress is set on the floor and you have to bend and lean down to pick up or lay down your kid.

A pack n play’s mattress is slightly elevated from the floor.

Some have a bassinet feature that can go up a bit more, making it easy to lean in and carry or put down your kid.

So consider these things if you have a bad back.

Pack n Play vs Baby Bjorn Travel Crib: FAQ

How long can you use baby bjorn travel crib.

Up until 3 years or until your kid decides to climb out of it. There’s no weight limit as the mattress is directly on the floor.

Can you use a travel crib as a pack n play?

Yes you can. But only for sleeping. Travel cribs like the BabyBjorn can’t really turn into a playpen like the Graco, because of its narrow top.

Are pack ‘n plays safe to use?

Yes. As long as you follow sleeping safety guidelines and manufacturer’s warnings and recommendations.

Can I use a crib mattress in a Pack ‘ N Play?

No. Crib mattresses are bigger than the standard size pack n play.  Also, it’s not recommended to use a different mattress that’s not advised by the manufacturer, for safety reasons.

Baby Bjorn Travel Crib vs Pack n Play: Which One Is Better?

If you frequently travel (especially to Canada) and money is not an issue, then a BabyBjorn Travel Crib light is better to have.

It’s safe, lightweight, easy to pack (can fit inside a large suitcase) and easy to clean, which is very convenient for traveling.

However, if you’re on a budget and you only travel once in a while, then a Pack n Play will do.

Just check with the airline or hotel if it’s okay to bring (especially if you’re going to Canada!)

It’s not as light as the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib, but it’s portable enough that you can keep it in the car or check it in as a separate baggage.

A pack n play is also a great crib alternative for your home. It can come with a lot of accessories that can help care for your child, such as a diaper changing table, mobile toys, etc.

I hope this comparison between the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib vs Pack n Play has helped you finally decide between the two. If you like this article, check out my other related cribs and bassinet guides such as:
