Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Sarahan – Himachal Pradesh

Set against a backdrop of beautiful pine trees and stately Deodars, Sarahan is a nature lover’s paradise. Yes, this statement you can apply for most settlements in the captivating Himalayas. However, each locale is often unique. With wildflowers all around, multiple guzzling streams, and the contrast of apple orchards against the snow-clad peaks, Sarahan is truly a place that becomes an often repeat visit.

In fact, Sarahan is the home to Jujurana , a rare and protected bird – the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. Combine that with the relatively easier and pliable route – you’ll often find yourself daydreaming of the quaint place.

From a mythological standpoint, Sarahan is exceptionally important as it houses the Bhimakali Temple, which is part of the 51 Shaktipeethas . The legends are fascinating, even if you’re not a believer. Keep an open heart and mind, and you’ll enjoy the yesteryear folklore with some never-forgettable views! Also, in the Puranas , the ancient Hindu religious texts, Shonitpur is identified with Sarahan.

From a historical standpoint, Sarahan was the Summer Capital of the erstwhile princely state, Bushaahr Kingdom . This kingdom was an important center for trade between Tibet, Kinnaur and the lower plain areas.

Sarahan Bimakali Temple and the beautiful backdrop view

Sarahan is at a distance of 165 km from Shimla, the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. At an altitude of 7,589 Ft above sea level, the hamlet of Sarahan is located north-west from Shimla, above Sutlej River on Old Indo-Tibet Road . Sarahan is a connector to the Kinnaur Valley, often called its gateway.

The distance from Delhi to Sarahan is 507 km and it takes about 12-13 hrs to drive to Sarahan from Delhi. Most people come back to Delhi from Sarahan in a day after completing their Kinnaur – Spiti Valley trips.

Sarahan Weather

Sarahan experiences ideal temperatures for growing apples. Thus, it is always mildly cold – making it especially pleasant during summer months and a bit cold during the winter. While the summer months experience temperatures ranging from 10-30 o C, averaging around a comfortable 20 o C.

Late July and August are monsoon months and it can rain anytime, from mild showers to intense rainfall. Kinnaur Valley beyond Jeori – Sarahan is not ideal for visiting in the monsoon period.

Sarahan in December to February

On the other hand, in the winter months, Sarahan is colder, with temperatures ranging from 7 to -7 o C. The major highlight has to be the snowfall, leading to a white winter wonderland in Kinnaur.

What is the best time to visit Sarahan?

This little settlement atop the Sutlej river basin will provide you with your heart’s desire. Since the roads are well maintained and connected throughout the year, one can choose their preferred time. Whether you’re a religious person with your attention spiked during the Durga Puja Festival, or you’re like me and love connecting with nature – Sarahan holds the answer.

The roads are mostly well connected throughout the year with Sarhan, and you’ll be happy to get into the heart of the hills. Choose your pickings for what you’d like to experience.

August/ September is harvest season for the apples and makes for a sight to never be forgotten, with the entire vistas turning into colors of the fertility of the land. And the winter months are always a pleasurable, though cold yet always an enjoyable experience when in the hills.

Having said all that, September – October (Autumn), and March – April (Spring) are two windows that I consider as the best time to visit Sarahan. You should also read my article on the best time to visit Kinnaur Valley for more details

How to reach Sangla Valley – Kinnaur

Sarahan lies just off the old Hindustan – Tibet Road and compulsorily requires road travel. Thus, whether you’re choosing Air or Rail as your means of travel for the majority of the journey, at least 165 km will be covered by road from Shimla to Sarahan.

There are two routes to reach Sarahan. While the primary and often used route is via Narkanda , In the winter months, this route might have limited connectivity and an alternate route via Kothi might be pliable. However, the possibility of this is remote.

The Route from Delhi to Sarahan via Shimla

Once you reach Shimla, you’ll be traveling through high mountains near the peaks for most of the part, crossing Fagu, Theog, and Narkanda. After Narkanda, you will start a sharp descend to reach Rampur, and thus, your journey adjacent Sutlej river begins.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

It is noticeably warmer in Rampur as compared to the higher elevation you were in till Narkanda. It is especially perceptible in the Summer months. After Rampur, you’ll reach Jeori. This location is where you’ll take a sharp U-turn to ascend towards Sarahan.

Delhi » Chandigarh » Shimla (2200 mt) » Narkanda (2708 mt) » Rampur (1350mt) » Jeori » Sarahan (2314 mt)

In the winter months, the road to Sarahan from Jeori might be closed, given the heavy snowfall. Be prepared and a little easy with your itinerary.

Love food on the road trip?

Also, a pit-stop-must is a makeshift dhabha of sorts right after Sarahan where an old lady serves lip-smacking Rajma Chawal. Yes, the hygiene is slightly questionable, but it is a dhabha after-all! The taste is unbeatable. Rs 50 for an unlimited plate of Rajma Chawal – sign me up! Apart from that Annapurna dhabha near Jeori is the pretty famous for Rajma Chawal too.

Narkanda Village

The nearest airport to Sarahan is Jubbarhatti, in Shimla, approximately 165 km from Sarahan. However, since the airport is tiny, it caters to limited connectivity. There is a bigger & reliable airport at Chandigarh, which is fairly well connected domestically. The distance of Chandigarh to Sarahan is 275 km.

Hence, Chandigarh is the best place to start the trip to Sarahan if you are flying from any other part of India than Delhi or other Northern states.

By Railways

The nearest railway station is Shimla as well, lying 165 km from Sarahan. Again, the station has limited connectivity. However, you can make an adventure out of it, by riding the renowned, historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla Toy Train

By Bus or Public Transport

Many HRTC buses ply the Shimla – Kinnaur (Reckong Peo) route. Also, you’ll be able to catch a semi-deluxe bus from Chandigarh to Reckong Peo as well as running every day at night.

You can get off at Jeori, which is 12 km from Sarahan. There, you’ll be able to catch a local bus that traverses the route to Sarahan frequently, or shared jeeps will also be available. This journey from Jeori to Sarahan will cost you approximately INR 50 and will take you about an hour or less.

You should look more details in the article on visiting Kinnaur Valley by public transport .

Kinnaur Valley Public Transport Bus Schedule

A road trip to Sarahan can be made by either hiring a commercial taxi or driving in your car or bike. Road conditions are quite decent, so you will not face any challenges. However, there is a lot of extensive work for widening the highway ongoing between Shimla and Chandigarh – where you might face traffic jams. The road conditions deteriorate in Kinnaur Valley once you go further beyond it.

Taxis for Sarahan

Taxis to Sarahan are available from Shimla to reach any destination in Himachal Pradesh . You can always get connected with local taxi drivers in this list of taxi drivers in Kinnaur and Spiti Valley . However, this might be an expensive affair. The costing may be anywhere around INR 20,000 depending on the number of days of the trip (as of 2019). In general, these local drivers charge from Rs 3000-3500 per day for Kinnaur Valley or Spiti trip.

But, if you’re traveling in a group, this might not be that expensive of a proposition. And given that Shimla is an extremely commercial tourist town brush up on your haggling and bargaining skills – will come in handy! Further, self-drive cars available in Delhi and Chandigarh are a great way to travel, and you can easily book from your starting location point.

Local Commute

To travel around Sarahan and to explore nearby hamlets, I would strongly suggest having a vehicle at your disposal. Exploring the quaint town is best done on foot and by matching your pace with that of nature!

Sarahan Bimakali Temple

Sarahan – Places to Visit

Let us look at some of the places to visit near Sarahan on your trip.

Bhimakali Temple

Sarahan Bhimakali Temple is the major attraction of this village. As one of the fifty-one Shaktipeethas, Bhimakali temple, sometimes known as Bhimadevi Temple, houses Kuldevi (presiding deity) of Bhushahr Kingdom. This temple is 800 years old and has a unique architectural design. As per the legends, the ear of Goddess Sati fell at this location due to the Daksha-Yajna incident.

Thus, this became an integral location for Hindus. More importantly, Bengali folk hold this temple in great reverence, thanks to the eternal goddess that resides here. The statue of the goddess is in the topmost story of the temple.

Few folks are aware, however, that the penultimate floor houses the shrine of the daughter of Himalaya – i.e., Goddess Parvati, and her divine consort – Shivji. There are three more temples located in the temple complex – dedicated to Raghunathji, Narsinghji, and Bhairavji (the guardian). Durga Puja is one of the biggest events for Sarahan. Devotees flock in high numbers to Sarahan, to celebrate with their goddess.

Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary

Other attractions include Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary , which lies 4 km from the main town of Sarahan. With lots of untouched and dense forest cover, Musk Deer, Gorals, and Thar, you can easily spot here. The Forest staff is easily available and always helpful and forthcoming with advice and wisdom.

While exploring the sanctuary, do keep your eyes peeled for Monals and Koklas that you can find here. The best way to explore this region is on foot, and exploring the many tiny trails that will take you alongside mountain edges, and usually open up in the hidden valley of Kashapat! Happy Exploring!

Daranghati also comes in one of the top offbeat places in Himachal Pradesh . You can definitely go for camping in these woods if adventure cords hit your travel buds.

Walk-in Apple Orchards

Apple Farming is synonymous with Kinnaur, and roaming about in orchards is a favorite activity. Try making friends with the farmers to truly understand their life and the exceptional hard work required to feed the world delicious apples!

Also, there is a natural water stream that is known to have medicinal properties near Jeori, right before starting the ascend for Sarahan off National Highway – 05.

Food Options

There are few dhabas sprinkled along Sarahan. Local Himachali cuisine combined with the Tibetan influence defines the culinary experience of the region. The hotel you’re staying at would also be a good safe option for other cuisines, mostly limited to North Indian affairs.

I have always noticed that food in the hills tastes so much better. I am unsure of why, however, the fresh produce right from the source, clean air, lesser pollution and the love and effort put into the cooking of food might have something to do with it. Would you agree with this? Comment below!

The standard affair of local Kinnauri Caps, Kinnauri Shawls , and Nehru Jackets is available for your shopping desires. All these items are readily available in the main market near the temple. Of course, apple jams and apricot goodies are a must-have and a great buy in the region. Near the temple, you’ll come across unique religious items, representing both Hindu and Tibetan cultures, synonymous with the region.

Where to stay in Sarahan

There are few places to stay in Sarahan, for different budget requirements. Here are some of the Sarahan hotels or accommodation option that I can suggest for you:

  • Hotel Shrikhand , a Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department Corporation undertaking resides on the edge of the hill. With its copycat architecture as the temple, this HPTDC Sarahan property is breathtakingly beautiful. With cleanroom and exceptionally stunning views of the panoramas of the valley and especially the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. The hotel houses both individual rooms as well as a 12-bed dormitory.
  • Bhimakali Temple Guesthouse – Breathtaking views, serene environment, and right bang in the middle of all action, the temple guesthouse has private rooms with balconies, a temple courtyard, and even has dormitories available. However, you should note that the temple is wonderful and sought after locale, particularly for the pilgrims during religiously important festivals. Thus, plan your stay on your trip to Sarahan accordingly. At times, you will find cleanliness an issue in these rooms, but upper floor rooms are in general much better.
  • Apart from that, you can also stay at Jeori PWD Rest House. I have stayed up there a couple of times. If you can manage your food, the rooms are decent and clean.

There are a few camping spots near the village or if you move towards Daranghati. You can easily spot some locals to help you out! So, do not hesitate to take your camping gear and spend a night under a billion-star sky.

Roads on the way to Sarahan from Shimla

Most Common Sarahan Itinerary

Many people visit Sarahan as a part of their Kinnaur Valley trip or Spiti Valley trip. In general, it is OK enough to use Sarahan as a stopover place either going further to Kinnaur or Spiti. However, if you have spare time at hand, you can spend a day or two at Daranghati as well along with Sarahan.

Sarahan to Chitkul & Sangla Valley

You can travel to Sangla from Sarahan after spending a day or two. The distance of Sarahan to Sangla Valley is 84 km and will take about 4 hrs to travel. Sangla Valley to Chitkul is further 25 km away and is an hr journey.

Sarahan to Kalpa

After visiting Sangla Valley and Chitkul, you should travel to Kalpa and spend some time up there before returning home from Kinnaur Valley or going further up to Spiti Valley. The distance of Sarahan to Kalpa is 95 km and will take about 4 hrs to cover.

If you plan to travel just Kinnaur, then it is better to reach Kalpa from Narkanda instead of Sarahan to Kalpa. Then while coming back, cover Sangla Valley and then stop over at Sarahan before coming home.

Also, sleeping at Sarahan before moving further to high altitude places will also help you decrease the chances of AMS issues .

Match your pace with the pace of nature and your surroundings, forget the time running out, and calmly be. To truly relax and unwind, spend a couple of days here. For adventure lovers, there’s a tonne of activities that you can do!

  • Petrol Pump – If venturing from Shimla, in between, there are plenty of petrol pumps from Shimla to Kinnaur region. Rampur’s last petrol pump and Narkanda petrol pump are two that I prefer a lot. But if you are traveling further from Sarahan to Kalpa or Sarahan to Sangla, you should also tank up at Tapri petrol pump.
  • Medical Help : A well-equipped hospital is situated in Rampur, 35 km away or next major medical help you can avail in Shimla, 165 km from Sarahan.

Sarahan – Of Mountains & Bhimakali Temple | A Complete Travel Guide

Sarahan Travel Guide

Last Updated on: Aug 9, 2023

About this blog: Sarahan is a beautiful destination in Himachal Pradesh known for Bhimakali Temple and great views of the mountains. If you are planning a trip to Kinnaur Valley and thinking of staying at Sarahan, this Sarahan Travel Guide will help you plan your trip. Read this to know about the places to visit in Sarahan, how to reach and where to stay and other practical travel information.

Waking up to the views of mountains is something that I can get used to. However, living in a city, this particular desire remains as such. So when we were at Sarahan, these views of the mountains from our homestay was something that I particularly enjoyed.

Sarahan in Himachal Pradesh is a small town blessed with the exceptionally scenic beauty. Also known as the “Gateway to Kinnaur Valley” , this sleepy little town with cliffs on one side is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Himachal.

Blooming roses

We had earlier visited Sangla and Chitkul at the end of the Rupin Pass trek . However, Sarahan and Kalpa eluded us at that time. So, this time during our Spiti Valley road trip, we decided to stop for a night at Sarahan. And if you are planning a trip to Spiti Valley, you might also consider Sarahan as a stopover.

Sarahan – The Gateway to Kinnaur

Sarahan is beautiful. Surrounded by pine and deodars, the place seems just out of a picture postcard. While most of the Himalayan destinations boast of similar landscape, each place has its own unique charm. There are apple orchards, guzzling mountain streams, flowers growing all around and views of snow-covered peaks.

Views of mountain peaks from Sarahan Himachal Pradesh

Sarahan is also the home to Jujurana, or the tragopan, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. Thus, Sarahan might be a small town, but it definitely packs a punch. If you can club your trip to Sarahan with Kinnaur Valley (Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul), it will be an amazing holiday.

 Historical and Mythological Connection

Sarahan also has historical, mythological and religious significance. The Bhimakali Temple, one of the famous temples of India is located at Sarahan. Bhimakali Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India.

Sarahan finds mention as Shonitpur in the Hindu mythological texts, Puranas . You might find several folklore and stories associated with the place if you talk with the elders of the town.

Historically, Sarahan was the summer capital of the erstwhile Bushahr kingdom . Sarahan was located at the strategic point on the Hindustan-Tibet Road that connected Tibet, Kinnaur and the lower mountain areas. Sarahan was thus an important center for trade on the Old Silk Road.

Where is Sarahan located?

Sarahan is located about 135 km from Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh and 250 km from Chandigarh.

At an altitude of 7589 feet above the sea level, Sarahan is located just above the Sutlej River on the Old India-Tibet Road. A slight detour is needed from the main highway at Jeori to reach Sarahan. The place is about 15 km from Jeori.

Our experience at Sarahan

We visited Sarahan on our road trip to Spiti Valley. After ariving at Chandigarh by 11 AM, we started our journey. We had booked a car for the entire trip and they picked us up from Chandigarh airport.

Staying at Shimla was an enticing option, but we have been to Shimla a number of times and so decided to skip it this time. Moreover, this time, we wanted to explore Spiti Valley and so  we decided to drive to Sarahan on the first day itself.

Apart from a little traffic near Shimla, the journey was quite pleasant. The scenery kept on changing. The landscape changed once we left the precincts of Chandigarh. Shimla brought more greenery and soothing to the eyes. Crossing Shimla, the mountains and vegetation changed.

A forest fire seen in the mountains on the way to Sarahan

The landscape of Narkanda once again differed from what we left back.  Incidentally, Narkanda is also a good place to stop on the way to Kinnaur valley.

We kept on driving, enjoying the views of the mountains and the scenery. At one time, I was feeling a bit down because of the twists and turns on the road. Apparently, an empty stomach makes the problem more pronounced. So we stopped at a local shop and bought local cherries. That was the only thing available! We had a few cherries and continued on our way.

By the time we reached Jeori, it was almost 9.30 PM. Almost all the shops were closed down and Jeori looked dark and a little bit scary. We found a small eatery that was open and had our dinner from there. A hot plate of Rajma Chawal is definitely good when you are hungry.

By the time we reached Sarahan and our homestay, it was almost 10.30 PM. Our host was very nice and showed us our rooms.

The rooms were small and cosy. We were so tired at that time, we simply slept.

Morning at Sarahan

View of the mountains from Sarahan

We woke up to a bright and beautiful morning. The first thing I saw when I came out of our room was the views of the mountains. The distant ones were snow-capped and it was a perfect view. As I mentioned before, I really wish I could get used to such views.

After admiring the views for quite a considerable amount of time, we had our breakfast and then went out to explore Sarahan on foot. Bhimakali Temple was located only 1 km from our homestay.

Places to visit in Sarahan

Bhimakali temple.

Bhimakali Temple in Sarahan

Well, the most important and the main attraction of Sarahan is undoubtedly the Bhimakali Temple. The temple dominates the skyline of Sarahan. Just like many other Himachali temples, Bhimakali Temple also has a wooden tower like structure.

Ornate door of the Bhinakali Temple

There is a small market just in front of the temple. There are a few shops and local eateries there. The local bus stand also seems to be right there.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhimakali, a form of Shakti and the presiding deity of the Bushahr rulers. The temple is well maintained and has several ornate wooden doors.

The towers inside Bhimakali Temple in Sarahan Himachal Pradesh

The most striking feature of the temple is the two towers that dominate the whole architecture. The idol of Goddess Bhimakali is inside one of the towers. We went up the tower and admired the amazingly beautiful wood carvings.

There are smaller temples in the complex dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses. It took us half an hour to explore Bhimakali Temple.

New Palace or Shanti Kunj

New Palace or Shanti Kunj at Sarahan

Coming out of the Bhimakali Temple, we walked down a road beside it. It brought us to Shanti Kunj or the Palace. This is the new palace. The older one and Bhimakali Temple were in the same complex. Later this new palace was built. Apparently, we do not think anyone resides in the palace. So we went inside and just roamed around.

Inside the New Palace

Tragopan Breeding Centre

There is a Tragopan Breeding Centre at Sarahan for protection and conservation of the state bird of Himachal. We saw a sign board to the Tragopan Breeding centre, but did not visit the place.

Please note that the Tragopan Breeding Centre remains closed for visitors from mid-April to mid-August as it is the breeding season at that time.

Apple orchards

Apple orchards at Sarahan with the Bhimakali Temple at backdrop

There are plenty of apple orchards all around Sarahan. It was not the apple season and so they looked like other trees. I am sure during the season in August-September, the place would look like a riot.

There is a small trek that you can do from Sarahan – Bashal Peak trek. If you want to do it, please take the help of local guides.

We explored the place at leisure, visited Bhimakali Temple and simply walked around. After that, it was time for our next journey. We were heading towards Kalpa that day. And this was another interesting journey.

On the way towards Kalpa

Sarahan Travel Guide

How to reach sarahan.

The nearest airport to Sarahan is Jubbarhatti in Shimla. However, this is a domestic airport and quite small, having limited connectivity.

Chandigarh is the biggest airport nearest to Sarahan, the distance beingSarahan almost 250 km. It is possible to reach Sarahan from Chandigarh in a day, provided you start a bit early. We had done that. However, since we started from Chandigarh a bit late, we reached Sarahan quite late.

Here again, the nearest railway station is Shimla. Once again, Shimla is a smaller station having mountain railways and lesser number of trains.

The main railway station nearest to Sarahan will be Chandigarh again.

If you are looking for public transport, reach Chandigarh or Shimla first. From there, take a bus towards Kinnaur. You can take any bus heading towards Reckong Peo, Sangla, Pooh or Kaza. All these buses will stop at Jeori where you will have to get down. You will get HRTC buses from both Shimla and Chandigarh.

Buses are available between Jeori to Sarahan at regular intervals.

When we visited, we came to know that there are only two direct buses running from Shimla to Sarahan – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

By Booking a Cab

You can also book a cab or taxi for your entire trip. A car can cost you around INR 3500 to INR 5000 per day depending on the type and make of the car. This can be a bit expensive if numbers are less.

Self-drive cars are also available from Delhi and Chandigarh. If you are confident with your driving skills, then go for it.

What is the best time to Visit Sarahan?

Sarahan is an all-year-round destination. The place is well connected and the roads are well maintained, so you can visit this place at any time of the year depending on your convenience and choice.

There are, however, two times when Sarahan becomes exceptionally beautiful. One of the best times to visit Sarahan is during August and September which is the apple harvesting season. The entire landscape turns into something that will leave you completely mesmerized.

Spring between March and April is also a good time to visit. The weather is fine and there are colours from the blooming flowers.

Summer months between April and May is the peak season that sees a lot of visitors. Once again September and October is also a peak season and sees a lot of Bengali tourists, especially during the month of October.

Winters are also a good time to visit. However, the weather will be cold and you would need to carry woolen garments with you.

Where to Stay at Sarahan?

There are many homestays and hotels available at Sarahan. Here are a few recommendations –

Hotel Shrikhand : This is the property of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department. The property is beautiful. There are rooms as well as dormitory available here. You can book online .

Bhimakali Temple Guest House: The temple guesthouse is clean and beautiful with great views of the mountains. I think you have to call them up directly for booking.

Heritage Sarahan: We stayed at this homestay located about km from the Bhimakali Temple. It is a decent homestay with clean rooms and good meals.

Other Things to Consider

Mobile Connectivity: Good mobile connectivity is available from all the networks. Internet spped was also decent with my Airtel and Jio numbers.

ATM: ATM is available at Rampur, 35 km from Sarahan.

Petrol Pump: If you are coming from Shimla, you will get the last petrol pump at Rampur. If you are going towards Sangla or Kalpa, then get your tanks filled at Tapri.

In Conclusion

Sarahan is lovely – a perfect place to be close to nature. However, you will probably not be doing a trip to Sarahan only. It might be clubbed with a Kinnaur Valley trip or a Spiti Valley trip. Whatever are your itinerary, this is a good place to stop for the night.

Sarahan and it’s Hidden Valley Of Flowers

Posted on September 2, 2019 by Divsi by Divsi

Flowers of Himalayas

I look at the path to the pheasantry in Sarahan skeptically. “ Are the birds in cages ? “I ask Doreen with a heavy heart as I get out of the vehicle. I have always abhorred the idea of having birds in cages.  “ The walk is going to be beautiful ” she says. I trust her as I follow her on to a mossy path. We are at Sarahan, a quaint village beyond Rampur, in the Shimla district of Himachal . This was a one night halt, after Fagu, before we headed to the gorgeous Sangla and Kalpa in Kinnaur. No wonder, it is called the “Gateway to Kinnaur “.

We had reached here around 4 pm and no, we wouldn’t retire to our rooms. Not with Doreen. An evening walk was a must. No matter where we are. So here we were, walking upto the pheasantry, (me with zero expectations of spotting anything). But this was going to yield a surprise. A memorable one.

The sun rays were now penetrating through the trees as the Cicadas sung to their hearts content.

“How far is it?” I ask, 10 mins later.

“ Enjoy the wa… ” she stops mid way. I stop too. We look ahead. The green path is flanked by two other colours: pink and purple. My jaw drops.

Clusters of colourful Himalayan Balsams welcome us sprouting through bushes and wood logs. Ferns of varied shapes and sizes fall gracefully from barks of trees. Some creepers cling to the barks tightly, as if locked in an embrace.

Sarahan Himachal Pradesh

Wild flowers stand atop shrubs, keeping a check on who is walking on the dry leaves. The forest had come alive to a bunch of intruders, and how!

Himalayan flowers Himachal Pradesh

Twenty minutes later we reached the pheasantry, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is the state’s effort to save the endangered birds from predators. The birds are in a protected natural enclosure and the forest officials are extremely particular about the feeding and protection of the birds from germs and diseases. The best part was it’s isolated location, due to which, only the interested tourists could make their way up and interact with the birds responsibly. I heave a sigh of relief. This pheasantry was not for human entertainment, but bird conservation. There is a notice board outside detailing the do’s and don’ts for the visitors, where teasing the birds was cited to be a criminal offence, and talking loudly was a strict NO-NO.

This is where I sight the vibrant coloured Himalayan Monal and the gorgeous state bird of Himachal, the Western Tragopan. The quiet of the place is punctuated only with the call of a young Monal strutting away. We look at it’s antics, from one branch to another.

Birds of Himalayas

As dusk sets in, the Cicadas raise their volumes as if urging us to leave. Alas! Intruders have to go and so we began our walk back to the HP tourism’s Hotel Shrikhand, our abode for the night.

The walk back is graced with the evening sun’s rays falling strategically on the petals of flowers as if highlighting them and saying “Look, that’s my favourite!” The riot of colours continues all the way as I spot some of nature’s gorgeous treasures, painted delicately in gentle strokes and tucked away between rocks and shrubs. It is nothing short of a miracle to see so many colours in a tiny span of one hour. There were flowers that I had never seen before, some whose names I knew, some absolutely unknown.

Sarahan – How to Plan your Trip and Explore?

sarahan

Sarahan is a sleepy little hamlet that not many would have heard of. It has a great religious significance in Hindu mythology but is yet to receive the fame it deserves as a tourist destination. It is one of those places that can aptly be termed as the hidden gems of Kinnaur. In this travel guide, I will share some necessary details on how to plan a trip to Sarahan.

It was quite by chance that I ended up in Sarahan for the first time about a decade ago. I was going to Spiti and took a wrong turn at Jeori, thinking of it as the road to Chitkul . I did not reach Chitkul that day of course. But because of that wrong turn, I ended up exploring a completely new place, a small amazingly scenic village that I was not even aware of.

It was Sarahan where I stayed that day and the day after. Since then, every time I am on the Spiti circuit or headed towards Kinnaur, I always ensure that I spend at least one night at Sarahan. Views from up here are mind-blowing and peace and tranquility are like none other. There is not much to do at Sarahan but the quality time you will spend here doing nothing will remain etched in your memories for long.

Quick Navigation

About Sarahan

Sarahan is a small village in Kinnaur Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is located about 100 kilometers from Narkanda and 165 kilometers from Shimla. Known as the “gateway of Kinnaur” and sitting at an altitude of 2,100 m (6,900 ft), it was once the summer capital of the rulers of the Bushahr kingdom. Apart from its scenic location, Sarahaan is also known for the Bhimakali Temple, originally known as Bhimadevi Temple; one of 51 Shakti Peethas.

It is a quiet and peaceful place that not many people visit and is perfect for someone who wants to head to an offbeat destination, without going too remote. The views you get here are spellbinding and it is also home to a bird pheasantry. The place receives a significant amount of snow and turns into a white wonderland in the winter season.

Due to its close proximity to Narkanda and its location on Shimla Kaza highway, Sarahan can easily be added to a trip to a trip to Shimla, Spiti valley, or find its places in a Kinnaur Valley itinerary . Read on to find out more.

You will first drive all the way to Shimla and then continue further uphill to Narkanda. This journey can take you about 10-11 hours easily covering a total distance of about 400 kilometers.

After a short break at Narkanda, you will then drive downhill to the banks of Sutlej River. Driving along the river, you will first reach Rampur and then the small town of Jeori.

At Jeori main chowk, there is a narrow steep road climbing up to your right. This is the one that you would have to turn on in order to reach Sarahan. It is a drive of about 15 kilometers and the road can get quite narrow and steep at some places.

Delhi to Sarahan is ideally a 2 days journey with a night halt at Chail, Shimla, or Narkanda. But if you were short on time and were able to start from Delhi by 2 or 3 AM, you can easily reach Sarahan in 14-15 hours.

Chandigarh to Sarahan is about 9 hours total and easily be done in a day.

How to reach Sarahan by Bus

If you were traveling by public transport, then the first step would be to board a bus to Shimla which should not be a problem. There are buses to Shimla from almost every major town nearby. You can either board a state-run bus like HRTC or book a seat with any private tour company.

The next step would then be to reach Jeori for which, you will have multiple choices. You can board any of the buses headed for Reckong Peo, Kaza, Pooh, or Sangla from Shimla. All these buses cross Jeori on the way.

Buses ply between Sarahan and Jeori at periodic intervals, which then you will board to arrive at your destination. Just wait at Jeori, ask around if you weren’t sure and you will find a bus going to Sarahan.

If not a bus, then you can try to find a shared cab from Jeori.  It will take you about an hour to get to Sarahan from Jeori.

From Shimla, you can also board any of the buses headed to Rampur. Bus, shared taxis, public carriers are frequent between Rampur and Jeori as well. So you can then look for a different mode of travel for the final leg of the journey.

There is in fact a direct also a direct bus from Shimla to Sarahan but its frequency is not that great. But it makes more sense to take any of the frequent buses between Shimla and Reckong Peo and get off at Jeori on the main road (NH 22).

A bus at 10 a.m plies directly from Sarahan to Jeori and Rampur that you can board to travel back from Sarahan.

Delhi to Sarahan Bus

There is no direct bus between Delhi and Sarahan but there is one for Reckong Peo. You can board this Bus from ISBT and the fare per person is around Rs. 900. This bus will pass through Jeori and you can get down there.

The HRTC Bus is an ordinary one and can be a bit uncomfortable for a long journey. If you do not want to travel by it, then another option would be to board the HRTC AC Bus for Rampur. It leaves ISBT Delhi at 7:30 PM and reaches Rampur Bushahr the next day at 9 AM. The total fare is about Rs. 1000 per person.

From Rampur, there are hourly buses for Reckong Peo which you will then board and get down at Jeori.

The nearest airport to Sarahan is the Shimla airport located in Jubbarhatti. After Shimla, the next nearest airport is the Bhuntar airport between Chandigarh and Manali. These are however small airports and flights to both these places are limited. The nearest major airport is at Chandigarh which is connected with several flights from all over the country.

The nearest train station also is at Shimla but like the airfield, this train station also is a small one; connected to Kalka by the famous Kalka – Shimla toy train. The nearest major railway station is at Chandigarh and trains are available from all major cities in the country to Chandigarh regularly.

How to reach Sarahan from Shimla

The most comfortable way to travel by Bus, however, would be to find one from Delhi / Chandigarh to Shimla and then Shimla to Peo. There are numerous Volvos/Scania buses available between Delhi/Chandigarh and Shimla. Fare is about Rs. 1000 per person for Delhi to Shimla by a Volvo and Rs. 800 for an AC Bus.

I know I explained the journey above from Delhi but there are buses available to Shimla from every major city nearby. It is a major tourist destination and you will have no problem finding a bus for Shimla, either state-run or private.

Once you are in Shimla, you can then board an ordinary Bus for either Rampur or Reckong Peo from the Tutikandi bus stand. Shimla to Rampur ordinary bus ticket is about Rs. 300 per person. There are several buses plying between Shimla to Rampur and finding one will not be a problem in the morning. From Rampur, you will then take a bus for Reckong Peo for Rs. Jeori for Rs. 100, get down at Jeori and then board another Bus / shared cab for Sarahan.

The bus fare from Shimla to Reckong Peo is Rs. 500 per person and around Rs. 250 for Rampur. You can even book your ticket online for this. There is one bus from Shimla to Reckong Peo that leaves at 9 AM and another one at 9.30 AM.

How to reach Sarahan from Chandigarh

If you arrived at Chandigarh by train or flight, the easiest way would be to book a taxi for Sarahan which will cost you anywhere between Rs. 5000 to Rs. 8000, depending upon your negotiation skills and the type of taxi you chose. If not a taxi, then traveling by bus will not be difficult either as I explained above.

What to see in Sarahan

This brings us to our next question of what do you see in Sarahan? Natural and scenic beauty if of course a given. The 16 kilometers drive from Jeori is quite steep and will bring you to a great height. From here, you will get an amazing view of the mountain ranges around. Apart from its vistas, below is a list of a few places that you should see while visiting Sarahan.

Bhimakali Temple

The Bhimakali Temple remains to be the prime attraction of Sarahan. Originally known as Bhimadevi Temple (Bhima Kali), dedicated to the mother goddess Bhimakali; this temple is one of 51 Shakti Peethas.

Build in the traditional Kinnauri style of architecture, the temple is really a sight to behold. The outer part of the temple boasts of amazing woodworks and the interior is full of complex carvings.

It is said that the manifestation of the goddess is reported to the Daksha Yajna incident. The location of the Bhima Kali temple is the place where the ear of Sati fell when Lord Shiva was carrying around her burnt body in grief. The places where her other body parts fell are the location of the 50 other Shakti Peethas. (Source: Wikipedia )

Royal Palace

The Palace of the royal family is located right next to the temple though they do not live here any longer. Tourists are not really allowed to enter the palace, but you are free to take some pictures from outside.

Bird Sanctuary

There is also a bird sanctuary in Sarahan that is worth visiting. This sanctuary caters to the breeding of some local species of birds called ‘pheasants’.

The state bird of Himachal Pradesh, locally known as Jujurana is a pheasant and endangered presently. The pheasantry in Sarahan is the only place where the breeding of this rare bird is carried out.

It is a great spot for getting some beautiful pictures of rare birds. Please note though that the sanctuary remains closed during the monsoon season due to birds mating season.

It is a small sitting area built under a canopy. Once upon a time, you could get some amazing views of the peaks and valley around from this spot. Tall trees have grown around it now though and have obstructed the views.

Apple Orchards

A trip to Sarahan means that you will be driving through some beautiful apple orchards. This entire region is famous for producing high-quality apples. In fact, Kinnaur apples are known to be the best in the entire world.

Nalati Stadium

It is a large playground, mostly used for playing football and cricket. It mostly remains closed though but if it was open, it is a good spot to sit for a while and enjoy the view of the distant Himalayan peaks.

Things to do in Sarahan

Other than visiting the above-mentioned places, there is not much to do in Sarahan except to just relax and enjoy the natural calm of the place. There are no adventure activities here and no long list of tourist attractions. You can visit the temple and the bird sanctuary, but most of your time at Sarahan will be spent doing nothing. That is what you should really come here for.

If you are a bit on the adventurous side though; and fit enough to do some trekking then the trek to Bashal Peak is the one to look out for from Sarahan. This trek starts from Sarahan and can be done in a day.

But please make sure that you are not attempting it on your own. It involves some steep ascents through a dense forest with wild animals present. Hire a local guide from Sarahan to take you to the peak and bring you back safely.

In short, below is a list of things that you can do in Sarahan.

  • Enjoy the Natural Beauty and Peace
  • Photography
  • Nature Walks

I have covered the topic of sightseeing in Sarahan in another article. For any more details on these places and activities, I will request you to please take a look at Places to visit in Sarahan and Things to Do .

Where to stay in Sarahan

There are a few hotels in Sarahan, both luxury and budget. HPTDC Hotel Shrikhand is a good place to stay if within budget. If not, then just take a walk around and you will easily find another hotel. There are several of them near the temple itself or on the way to the temple, as you drive up from Jeori.

The temple too provides the facility of night stay, like a Dharamshala, and could be a great choice for someone traveling on a limited budget.

Weather of Sarahan

Sarahan has an average elevation of 2,100 meters (6,900 ft). Owing to the altitude, the village experiences a cold climate throughout the year which is suitable for apple farming.

The weather during summer remains cool and pleasant with temperatures fluctuating between 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, depending on the time of the day and the month. On average though, the day temperature during summer is around a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius.

Come July and the monsoon arrives in the hills of Himachal. It continues to rain here throughout August and sometimes even in the first half of September. During this time, the hills and valleys get covered under a carpet of green grass with flowers of numerous colors all around.

Monsoon however also brings the risk of cloudbursts and landslides caused by incessant rains. This entire region receives high rainfall each year. If planning a trip in July or August, you would be wise to call ahead and inquire about the conditions before leaving home.

After November, it can snow at Sarahan at any time. Winter temperature here ranges between 5 Degrees to -10 Degrees Celsius. At times, during the months of January and February, it can snow so much that even the road from Jeori to Sarahan can get blocked.

Best Time to visit Sarahan

So when is the best time to visit Sarahan?  It would be either the months from April till June; or the months of September and October.

My personal favorite is September though. This is the time when the monsoon has just passed. Chances of rain and resulting risks are long gone but the green of the valley and freshness still remain. In general, it is the months of monsoon that bring life to the hills of Himachal and you can get to see plenty of it left in September.

You can also plan a trip here in the months of April, May, June, and October. Of these, April and October will be slightly colder than May and June.

November is an overall bad month to go because the scenery at this time is very dull and featureless. It will be terribly cold and there won’t even be any snow around.

The months of late July and August are usually not considered to be suitable for a trip to Sarahan. We already talked about cloudbursts and landslides. But even if that did not happen, it can still rain non-stop up here, trapping you inside the hotels and ruining any sightseeing plans.

If you wanted to see a snow-covered Sarahan, January will be the best month for that. For a budget trip, you should visit in July, August, or November. The number of tourists at this time is very less and you will have a great chance of getting a good deal on accommodation.

For a family trip, April to June is the best time to go since the weather at this time is agreeable with the majority of the tourists.

For more information on this topic, please take a look at When is the Best time to visit Sarahan .

Clothes to Pack

This will completely depend on the month of the year you arrived here. A heavy, windproof jacket will however be required irrespective of the time. Along with the jacket, in summer months, just carry your regular cotton clothes, a few light woolens and that will suffice.

To cope with the freezing temperatures of winter though, you must bring all your heavy woolens and thermals. For a winter trip, you also need to ensure that you have a pair of good-quality gloves and warm socks. Your jacket should also have a hood that can be helpful in protecting your neck, face, ears, and head. If not, carry a cap and a muffler as well.

If you were traveling during monsoon, then pack clothes that can dry fast, polyester. Keep a pair of rubber sandals handy for walking or riding around in the rain; like Crocs for example. You definitely do not want to get your shoes wet because that will take ages to dry and will be a great hassle. If you were traveling by car then keeping an Umbrella with the rest of your luggage can prove to be a good idea.

Itinerary for Sarahan

Mostly Sarahan gets included in itineraries for people either visiting Spiti valley, or Kinnaur. You will however find a lot of tourists here only visiting Sarahan.

How many places you want to cover will entirely depend on the number of days you have in hand but I will suggest a few itineraries as an example. For the sake of this article, I will assume that you are starting from Delhi. If you were coming from a different city, then only the journey for 1st and last day will be different. The rest of the details will still apply.

Sarahan Itinerary

  • Delhi to Narkanda – Day 1
  • Narkanda to Sarahan – Day 2
  • Sarahan – Day 3
  • Sarahan to Chail – Day 4
  • Chail to Delhi – Day 5

The itinerary above is a simple one where you arrive at Sarahan, stay for a day, and head back home. As a matter of fact, if you started by 2 AM from Delhi, you can actually make it to Sarahan on the same day without needing to stay at Narkanda.

Sarahan and Kinnaur Itinerary

If however, you want your travel a little broader with more places included, then you can plan something like below.

  • Sarahan to Chitkul – Day 3
  • Chitkul to Kalpa – Day 4
  • Kalpa to Chail – Day 5
  • Chail to Delhi – Day 6

Sarahan and Spiti Itinerary

If you wanted to travel on the entire Spiti circuit, then you can plan like this.

  • Kalpa to Kaza – Day 5
  • Kaza to Chandratal – Day 6
  • Chandratal to Manali – Day 7
  • Manali to Delhi – Day 8

Other Details

Below are some other details that can be of help in planning a trip to Sarahan.

Mobile Network in Sarahan

BSNL has the widest coverage in all of Himachal. But no matter which network you are on, your phone will be working fine in Sarahan. The reception will be strong and voice clarity good. Data connectivity also is good here.

The last time I visited Sarahan, I was using Airtel, another person from the group was on Vodafone, and a third person on Jio. Of these three, service in terms of call clarity and data connectivity was best for Jio.

Where and what to eat

There are numerous local dhabas here that serve some Himachali dishes like Thupka and all other north Indian dishes as well. You can choose to either eat at any of these dhabas or at the hotel that you were staying at.

Shopping in Sarahan

Some items that you can consider buying are Kinnauri Caps, shawls, Nehru jackets, and socks. All these items are available at the main market near the temple complex. Apart from clothes, some locals jams made from apples and apricots too remain on sale and are a good buy.

If you were visiting the temple, then you may choose to buy some religious items as well like puja thali and prayer bells.

Other than this, there is nothing to buy here. Sarahan is just a small village and if shopping was on your mind, you should try in Shimla rather.

I am not really sure about any of the private banks but there are branches of both SBI and HP State Co-Operative banks here at Sarahan. Both these banks provide ATM facilities and you will be able to withdraw cash. If not Sarahan then you will also find ATMs at Jeori, Rampur, and other places en route.

Mechanics / Petrol Pump

Like ATMs, petrol pumps and mechanics also on this route are in ample amount. You will keep coming across gas stations at regular intervals. Mechanics for small fixes too are available at several places along the highway and in Sarahan as well.

Towns like Shimla, Narkanda, and Rampur actually have authorized service stations for some known car and motorcycle brands.

Medical Assistance

Medical help for small ailments and a dispensary are available at Sarahan. For anything serious, however, you will have to either go to Reckong Peo, Rampur, or Shimla.

Sarahan Altitude

Sarahan is located at a height of 2,100 meters (6,900 ft) above sea level.

Road Conditions

Starting from Delhi, roads are mostly smooth all the way to Sarahan. There is some road widening work going on between Chandigarh and Shimla where you may hit some bad patches and slow traffic.

Shimla to Sarahan Road Conditions

The road from Shimla to Sarahan is a smooth drive until Jeori with a few bad patches in between. The road from Jeori and Sarahan is narrow and tricky in some places.

Sarahan to Kalpa Road Condition

The entire road from Sarahan to Kalpa is a smooth run. The entire distance of 85 kilometers between both the places can easily be completed in 3 to 4 hours.

Sarahan to Sangla Road Condition

If you were traveling from Sarahan to Sangla or Chitkul, you will find the road to be smooth until the Karchham dam. After that, for the next 40 kilometers, the road will remain to be a mix of average, bad and ugly.

Sarahan in Winter

Sarahan receives a lot of snow in the winter season and even the road from Jeori till here can sometimes get blocked. If you were planning to arrive here in winter, then be prepared for freezing temperatures.

Ensure that you are bringing in all your woolens and keep at least a couple of days as a buffer in your itinerary. In case the weather turned extreme and you had to stay back because of roadblocks, then you should be ready to afford to do so.

I hope the information above on visiting Sarahan was of help. If you have any other questions; or need any further details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below, or at our Community Forum , and I will be glad to answer.

Tourism In Sarahan

Soaked in nature's beauty, Sarahan is flanked on the banks of the meandering Sutlej River. The way to Sarahan through Fagu, Theog, Narkanda, Rampur, and Jeori is extremely scenic-traversing through mountains flanked by steep cliffs on one side and deep ravines on the other, dense emerald pine forests, terraced farms, apple orchards. Once in Sarahan, one beholds a range of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and one of them is the Shrikhand Peak. The rather peculiar thing about this peak is that it is only one whose tip remains uncovered with snow. In the evening, sunrays adorn the peaks and the sight is simply stupendous.

In the heart of Sarahan is the temple of Goddess Bhima Kaali, the architecture of which is very akin to a monastery. Lots of almonds, plums, and peach orchards laden with luscious fruits transport one to Eden.

Tour to Sarahan About 54 km from Sarahan lies in the Sangla valley. The road to Sangla is narrow, rough, and hazardous, taking one through Wangtu and Karchham. The Sutlej River that meanders below now emerges in all its frenzied ferocity. The sheer force with which it gushes down makes it awesome. The road to Sangla is crudely carved out of rocks and runs parallel to the river that is deep down in the forge. At some places, there is barely enough space for the bus to wriggle through the rough road and the rock above.

The entire Sangla valley is surrounded by mammoth snowcapped mountains. Pine trees standing tall and elegant bedeck these mountains and the Baspa River flows through the valley. Tiny rivulets trickling down from the melted snow merge with the Baspa-an overabundance of nature's bounty.

Best Time to Visit Sarahan

The ideal season to visit Sarahan and its adjoining areas is between April and June. After this the monsoons begin. September to November are good months to go and one can get a glimpse of snow in Kufri and Narkanda.

Search this blog, bagha sarahan - an unimaginable & stunning hill station with least known green meadows surrounded by some huge waterfalls, water-streams & snow capped mountains in kullu region of himachal pradesh.

Hidden among the snow covered hills of Shrikhand Mountian Ranges, which are known for their mythological significance and is said to be one of the adobe of Lord Shiva, this unknown village beckon those with an adventurous spirit as its beautiful landscape and lush green valley will take your breath away.

A wonderful place for adventurous campers: Sarahan, Kullu : Vandana Bhagra, Shimla : Hidden among the snow covered hills of Shrikhand Mountian Ranges, which are known for their mythological significance and is said to be one of the adobe of Lord Shiva, this unknown village beckon those with an adventurous spirit as its beautiful landscape and lush green valley will take your breath away. Many of you may get confused with Sarahan in Shimla district with its beautiful Bhimakali Temple but those you know and have been to Kullu will know this Sarahan better at 3200 metres height, and that too if they have had the zeal to walk all the way to picture its magnificent beauty. If you start your journey from Shimla then head towards Narkanda about 63 kms and then towards Nirmand which is another 28 kms approximately, with panoramic views of the Satluj Valley. From there you reach Bhagi Pul and then an uphill narrow road covering a distance of about 12 kms leads to this small village nestled among the mountains in all is pristine. Those who wish to travel by bus should be prepared for a long journey as it is nearly 176 kms from Shimla and can take up to 10 hours to reach, but of course with few stops and immense beauty to admire. Those planning to come from Beas side should be aware that there is no motorable road and would have to cross on foot from the Bishloi Pass. The HPPWD rest house situated outside the village offers decent accommodation which needs to be booked in advance but for the more adventurous laying out their tents (which of course you need to carry) in the open meadows can always be an option. With permission from the Government School nearby you can set your camp under the starry sky. The huge ground in the centre of the village is surrounded by fields, flora and fauna, water streams, waterfalls with amazing views of the snow covered hills nearby. With so much natural beauty around it becomes quite hard to concentrate on anything and then there were these kids studying in their open air classrooms. Those rring to go can begin their trek from Kullu Sarahan to Bashleo Pass through the dense forests and green meadows to experience this place and its serenity. A one day trek to the nearest snow covered peak is an enjoyable experience as one would come across innumerable waterfalls, small stream and unexplainable natural beauty. The freshness and the virginity of the place suddenly hits you taking you thousands and thousands of miles away from your hustle bustle city life. Other trekking options include heading towards the Jaon village to begin the Shrikhand trek through various hills, forests and streams. Village folk are often seen walking all the distance to Bangar and making it back by dinner time. The most typical feature about this village is its beautiful temple dedicated to sage Shring and gives a feeling of being a step closer to god and reaching for the sky. The use of vibrant colours, intricate artwork and unique architectural style will capture your imagination. The snow covered hills behind the templegives it a perfect backdrop of picture perfect beauty. The recently concluded two day Jhiru mela held during sangrand in April celebrates the beginning of the New Year which witnesses the village folk in their traditional dresses, dancing and singing to folk songs and wishing for prosperity. In case you plan a trip to Kullu and its better known destination do not forget to enquire about this small little village as it will equally charm you as would the other destinations.Photo credits: VJ Sharma

  • It’s located far from the hustle bustle of regular traffic.
  • The village is well connected with a kachcha road. The main station around Sarahan is Baghipul, which is 13-14 kilometers from Sarahan village.
  • There is a huge ground in the middle of high mountains. This almost equal to a cricket stadium.
  • There is enough fresh water around this lush green ground.
  • There is a school and HPPWD guest house around the boundary of this ground, so in case of emergencies one can move to the galleries of these 2 buildings.
  • 2 basic shops are there in the village. You need to walk a bit to reach these shops, but you can find basic groceries here, in case you forgot to carry something.
  • The place is safe. There is a village around it. But it’s always recommended to be prepared for unknowns. As with any other place, stay alert.
  • There are brilliant landscapes all around – snow-covered peaks, waterfalls, streams of chilled water all around, forests, treks, huge trees and lot of other things, which you find around  Kasol/Malana .
  • Beautiful nights with glittering stars in the sky and shooting stars.
  • Trekking opportunities all around.

And this doesn’t limit to above points. There is lot more to it, which is difficult to describe in words. A walk inside Sarahan village is worth. There is beautiful temple inside the village. And during walk you would come across some surprises. Village is well lit in the night, because of sufficient solar light panels installed all over the village. You will find happy people all around who are satisfied with their simple life of dealing with pets, heir fields & food. Such experiences compel you to rethink about the life we live in cities and lot of ‘WHY’ questions hit our mind.

Above photograph was clicked when we were trekking to the waterfalls. In the photograph, you can see the scale of this ground. The buildings around the ground are the school and the houses. You can also see the village at some distance. Look this photograph carefully and share what all your see here :)

Wood is also used heavily in constructing these houses. Mostly it's cedar wood which is considered pretty strong.

  • By Car – Reach Shimla from Delhi. Follow Kinnaur highway. Before Rampur, take a left cut over Satluj which takes you to Baghipul. From Baghipul, there is a steep climb till Sarahan village. 4*4 can comfortably go till the top
  • By Bus – Take bus from Delhi to Shimla. Then try to find a local bus which connects Shimla with Baghipul. You can also choose to take any bus to Rampur and get down at the bridge which goes towards Left. Bus conductor would help you to find this place. It comes before Rampur town. So you would need some help. Either GPS or any passenger, if not bus conductor. From Baghipul, you need to hire a taxi.
  • By Train – Train is only available till Shimla/Kalka. Beyond that follow the route mentioned above.

Sarahan in Shimla region of Himachal Pradesh is quite popular because of royal palace and famous Bhimakali temple there. While almost no one knows about Sarahan in Kullu, which is little away from main roads although connected through rough road. Sarahan in Kullu is awesome because it's located around some of the most beautiful natural beauties. Can you imagine a huge lush green ground for camping with water streams flowing through it and snow covered mountains all around. Walk for 20 mins and you hit a huge waterfall which was visible from this ground I mentioned above. There is a small village with unique styled houses and solar lights on pathways inside the village.

tourist places in sarahan himachal pradesh

Set in the laps of the Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh is all about unmatched natural beauty. Visitors can see a panorama of landscapes ranging from towering snow-capped mountains to verdant expanses of greenery.

Whether you're seeking adventure in the high-altitude desert of Spiti Valley, tranquility in the colonial charm of its hill stations, or spiritual solace in its ancient temples and monasteries, Himachal Pradesh has something for everyone.

Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Shimla, the 'Queen of Hill Stations', exudes colonial charm with its British-era architecture, particularly along the Mall Road. Visitors can explore attractions such as the Jakhu Temple with its iconic Hanuman statue, the neo-Gothic style Christ Church, and the Ridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The toy train ride from Kalka to Shimla is also a highlight, winding through lush forests and picturesque valleys.

Situated on the banks of the Beas River, Manali is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dense forests, it offers a plethora of activities such as trekking, skiing, paragliding, and rafting. Rohtang Pass, Solang Valley, and Hadimba Temple are some of the must-visit attractions.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Dharamshala, divided into Upper and Lower parts, is famous for its Tibetan culture and serene monasteries. McLeod Ganj, the upper part, serves as the residence of the Dalai Lama and is a hub for Tibetan refugees. Visitors can explore the Namgyal Monastery, Bhagsu Waterfall, and take the challenging yet rewarding trek to Triund for stunning views of the Dhauladhar range.

Kullu Valley

Known as the Valley of Gods, Kullu is renowned for its lush greenery, apple orchards, and adventure sports opportunities. The Great Himalayan National Park offers diverse flora and fauna, while Bijli Mahadev Temple offers panoramic views of the valley. Manikaran Sahib, with its hot springs and gurudwara, is a popular pilgrimage site.

Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley is a high-altitude desert offering surreal landscapes, ancient monasteries, and vibrant culture. Key Monastery, perched atop a hill, is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Spiti. Chandratal Lake, with its sparkling blue waters, and Pin Valley National Park, home to endangered species like the snow leopard, are must-visit destinations for nature enthusiasts.

Tucked away amidst dense forests of pine and cedar trees, Kasauli is a serene hill station offering breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The Monkey Point offers panoramic vistas of the Sutlej River, while the Christ Church, built in the Gothic style, is a prominent landmark. The Gilbert Trail, winding through lush greenery, is perfect for leisurely walks.

Named after Lord Dalhousie, this colonial-era hill station is known for its old-world charm, panoramic views, and pleasant climate. Khajjiar, often called 'Mini Switzerland', boasts a picturesque landscape with a small lake surrounded by dense pine forests. The Victorian-style St. John's Church, the historic Kangra Art Museum, and the scenic Panchpula waterfall are other attractions worth exploring.

Situated in the Kinnaur district near the Indo-China border, Chitkul is the last inhabited village in the Baspa Valley. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush green meadows, it offers a glimpse into traditional Himachali life. Visitors can trek along the Baspa River, visit the ancient Mathi Temple, and interact with the friendly locals.

Kangra Valley

With a rich historical and cultural heritage, Kangra Valley is home to ancient temples, forts, and lush tea gardens. The majestic Kangra Fort, dating back to the 4th century, offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The Masroor Rock Cut Temple, known for its intricate carvings, and the Kangra Art Museum, showcasing Tibetan and Buddhist artifacts, are must-visit attractions.

Bir Billing

Renowned as one of the best paragliding destinations in the world, Bir Billing offers adrenaline-pumping adventures amidst scenic landscapes. The Tibetan Colony in Bir reflects the region's rich cultural heritage, with monasteries like Chokling Gompa and Sherab Ling Monastery. Visitors can also explore the beautiful tea gardens and take leisurely walks through the picturesque countryside.
