A-ROSA River Cruise Routes
The city highlights, of course, start with Paris. The Seine has plenty of time. And it’s in no rush to leave the most beautiful city in the world. Rouen, Normandy’s capital, and Vernon home to Claude Monet’s house and garden in Giverny are to look forward to. Cruising the Rhône features Lyon – what a city! Everyone should see Lyon if they have the opportunity. With its old town – a UNESCO Word Heritage Site – its narrow alleyways, rear courtyards, popular quays and large squares. Further on Avignon is one of the most popular ports of call. It is an imposing, historic city in southern France that was home to several of the Catholic popes at one time. Cruising the Rhine takes in the Main and Moselle and the iconic cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and the delights of the mighty castles and winemaking town of the Moselle valley.
Seine River Cruising > Rhone River Cruising > Rhine River Cruising >
The A-ROSA fleet has 5 ‘international’ ships that cover the selected cruise routes where English, as well as German, is the official language. They accommodate between 176 and 202 passengers, with a choice of cabins within the inclusive price.
Ambience and Cuisine
Founded in 2000, A-ROSA, a German company, offers on every cruise varied buffets, high-quality drinks and access to the SPA-ROSA, which features a sauna, massage room and gym. One of the highlights of the cruise is the opportunity to relax on the sun deck or balcony and watch the magnificent scenery drift by. The ships dock in central locations, close to the heart of European metropolises, renowned historical sites and famous cultural and natural attractions – providing unforgettable experiences.
All excursions are managed through a third-party and are individually booked and paid for. One of the most popular are the city bicycle tours. There are tours for art lovers, history buffs and fans of adventure stories, as well as food and wine connoisseurs.

AROSA Cruises (officially A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH, translated "A-Rosa River Ship") is a German company operating passenger riverboats on Main, Rhine, Danube, Rhone, Saone and Moselle itineraries.
Company history and changes
A-ROSA Cruises (a-rosa.de/en) is a Rostock Germany -based company. As river cruise line brand , "A-Rosa" is currently owned (since 2018) by the UK-based Duke Street Capital (headquartered in London England ). The brand was previously owned by Atlantis International Ltd (Florida-based US travel company, also specializing in maritime services - surveying, risk consulting, average adjusting, claims management, cargo recovery). Its last owner (until 2018) was Waterland Private Equity LLP (Manchester-based investment group).
The company was founded in 2000 as a P&O Princess Cruises subsidiary to serve the German market. Alongside sister line AIDA, A-ROSA Cruises reflected AIDA's unfussy sensibility with less-structured dining, relaxed dress codes, and active onboard experience.
Arosa cruise company's operations started with three ships - Blu, Bella, and Donna. Following the 2013 merger between P&O and Carnival Corp, A-ROSA was sold off to the private company A-ROSA Flussschif (run by Lars Clasen, who created the A-ROSA brand). In 2009, Waterland (independent private equity investment group) acquired a majority stake in A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH. In the following years, the cruise company enjoyed significant growth and became the largest and most successful on the German passenger source market.
In January 2018, Waterland Private Equity LLP announced the sale of its interest in A-ROSA River Cruises. Arosa's new (current) owner is the UK-based Duke Street Capital, which acquired the whole company. Duke Street Capital (1988-founded) is a private equity firm investing in middle-market Western European companies. In 2019, Duke Street had ~GBP 2,6 billion total assets, the largest of which are Wagamama (restaurant chain), Gala Bingo (online), ERS-Equity Insurance Group (motor insurances), Burton's Foods (biscuits manufacturer), Esporta Clubs (health and fitness), GettyImages (online free stock media), The Original Factory Shop (department store), Marie Brizard (alcoholic beverages), Payzone UK (consumer payments).
In January 2020, A-ROSA partnered with CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) to expand its operations to the Australia New Zealand market. By CLIA Australasia as a River Marketing Affiliate, A-ROSA access a worldwide-known community of premium cruise companies and top-rated travel agencies from across the region as well as Executive Partners from various cruise travel industry supporting businesses.
On two Rhine voyages on Arosa Sena ship in August 2023 (Aug 5-12 and Aug 12-19) were offered the river cruising industry's first onboard swimming lessons. The program was via partnership with Wasserlust GmbH (swimming schools in Hamburg and Dusseldorf). The onboard lessons were for children (between 4,5 and 7 years of age) and cost EUR 100 per kid. Each course had max capacity 6 participants. Per voyage were offered a total of 6 swimming lessons (duration 40–50 min each) led by a qualified, Wasserlust-certified instructor. After completing the course, the kids received Wasserlust Certificates for Beginner and Intermediate levels.
Fleet's newest vessels are Arosa Alva (2019, on Douro River) and Arosa Sena/Emotion (2022, on Rhine River).
This Europe-based passenger shipping company targets predominantly younger and active travelers. Its riverboats have the industry's largest spas and feature sundeck swimming pools. Onboard wellness facilities deserve special mention, being served by certified massage therapists and trainers and offering latest beauty treatments and large-sized riverview gyms and saunas.
Indoor and outdoor open-seating restaurants emphasize on buffet stations. The food quality equals that found on other luxury vessels, and even the buffet aspect is upscale. The cuisine is mainly Mediterranean, with fresh and healthy choices. All cocktails are cruise price-included.
Staterooms are on 3 decks (as on most large European riverboats) with standard cabins sized 155 ft2 (14 m2). The cheapest are on Lower Deck (deck1) and with porthole windows (2/3 of the way up the riverside walls). Family staterooms are with sofabeds, which is also rare in the river cruise market. Cabins on Decks 2 and 3 are with French balconies and convertible to twins Queen-size beds. Some A-ROSA also have large-sized Suites.
During the day, the heart of each AROSA ship is its Sun Deck/top deck. This is a large outdoor area outfitted with a giant chessboard, shuffleboard, comfortable seating (loungers and deckchairs), shaded seating (retractable awnings). At other times, the bow-located Bar Lounge (indoor) is the prime spot for daily scheduled enrichment activities and live entertainment in the evenings. Most AROSA boats have a swimming pool on their sundecks. The newest bota (Arosa Sena) even has a separate/exclusive pool for kids.
Complimentary bicycles (onboard bikes) can be used on shore excursions (group and individual land tours). Also complimentary are provided Shore Excursions in each of the visited call ports along the cruisetour's route. These offers include also "food and wine" tours, culture-history and leisure (walking/biking tours) led by local professional guides (speaking both German and English).
A-ROSA's deals are also inclusive of airport and land transfers, taxes, onboard tips (gratuities), English-speaking professional staff service. On all Arosa ships, kids up to 15 years of age (including 15-yo) travel free of charge when the cabin is booked "Premium All-Inclusive". The children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. During school holidays, kids enjoy complimentary onboard childcare service (8 am - 9 pm) and supervised fun activities - like pizza baking, treasure hunts, dance parties, trivia quizzes.
(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021
Due to the COVID pandemic, Arosa River Cruises suspended its entire fleet's passenger shipping operations (all boats) canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 14, 2020, through early-July 2021.
Operations were planned to resume in 2020 on Rhine River (June 17), Danube River (June 20), French rivers (July 11) and Douro River (October 28). Eventually, all voyages (Douro-Danube-Rhine) scheduled for 2020 were canceled.
AROSA's schedules for 2021 were canceled for the ships Bella (restarted on March 8, 2022), Luna (restarted on March 20), Viva (restarted on March 28).
All affected bookings received full refunds, including on prepurchased through A-ROSA Flusskreuzfahrten packages and services. With rebooking were offered EUR 50 pp in OBC (onboard credit) plus 30% discount on a future cruise booking.

A-ROSA SENA chosen as river cruise ship of the year
E-Motion Ship awarded with renowned German Cruise Guide Award
Jörg Eichler accepted the Cruise Guide Award for A-ROSA SENA as "River Cruise Ship of the Year" in Hamburg. Photo: A-ROSA River Cruises
Rostock, 27 September 2023 – The A-ROSA SENA was named “River Cruise Ship of the Year 2023” at the Cruise Guide Awards ( Kreuzfahrt Guide Awards ). A-ROSA CEO Jörg Eichler accepted the award, which is renowned in the industry, in Hamburg. An expert jury chose the overall eight winners from over 30 pioneering ships which had been nominated by the editors of Cruise Guide ( Kreuzfahrt Guide ).
A-ROSA SENA convinced the jury with her modern design, spacious balcony cabins, versatile restaurant, large SPA-ROSA and family concept with Kids Club and family cabins. Last but not least, the innovative propulsion concept with battery storage for efficient and temporarily electric sailing also scored points.
“This award is one of the most important in the German-speaking cruise industry, but also attracts international attention. We are extremely pleased that A-ROSA SENA has been honoured with the award for ‘Best River Cruise Ship’ as an exemplary ship by the expert jury. For us, the course towards more innovation, more sustainability and unique holiday experiences does not end with A-ROSA SENA, of course. We are already working on new concepts”, reveals Jörg Eichler, CEO of A-ROSA River Cruises.

I chose this cruise to explore river cruise offerings. I have river cruised with AMA which was very good in all areas - food, cabins, evening activity, beverage offering. Highlights of the Rhône River Cruise
Cast off for savoir vivre, art and life..
From Lyon to Viviers, Arles, Port St. Louis, Avignon and Tournon/ Tain-l´Hermitage to Lyon.
What is it that makes the south of France so special? So different from the other beautiful Mediterranean regions? Maybe it’s the fact that everything is a little more intense. The people, who are always so animated and open; the hard, angular dialect; the picturesque landscape with its dry red earth; the breathtaking ravines and even wild white horses. The mistral, which regularly blows stormily into your lungs. The wines are full-bodied and good. And then there’s the fantastic cuisine scented with herbs and olives, and the art, which positively hurls vibrant colours into the eye. The buildings play their part, too. Papal palaces, monasteries and castles, stony and awe-inspiring. The international jet set on the Côte d’Azur aren’t exactly known for understatement either. All of this is guaranteed to make you fall in love with the south of France – not just a little, but head over heels. And to have a holiday that is a little more intense. For all the senses.
The Night Cafe, Cafe Terrace at Night and Trinquetaille Bridge in Arles are just three of Van Gogh’s many works that portray Arles at its most beautiful. However, Van Gogh wasn’t the only big name who was fond of the city. During Roman times, there was already a flourishing metropolis on this spot. Constantine the Great made Arles his seat of government in the fourth century. Nowadays, the city is a blend of modern urban developments and historic monuments – and the inhabitants seem completely at ease living between the past and the present. This kind of laid-back attitude is a special feature of this cruise on the Saône and the Rhône.
Taken literally, savoir-vivre means ‘knowing how to live’. And living well is something that the people of Provence know a great deal about. Surrounded by gnarled olive trees, lilac-hued lavender fields and vineyards that produce the best red wines, it’s a place to relax and enjoy life. In the summer, you can watch one of the local farmers harvest fruit – and maybe lend a hand yourself. Perhaps you’ll even be rewarded with a glass of local wine or a dish of bouillabaisse. Other regional specialities include white nougat from Montélimar, candied fruits from the town of Apt and the famous truffles from the Vaucluse Mountains. Provence is a place where pleasure is a priority.
As we move closer to the Mediterranean, the scenery on this cruise starts to change, becoming wilder and more untamed. The Rhône begins to fragment here, carrying along some 20 million tonnes of stones, sand and clay with it every year and washing it all into the Mediterranean. The Rhône Delta is known for its black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos – you can watch the latter between the salt marshes and rice paddies, filtering water through their bills to extract plankton. This marshland is unique in France and covers 120,000 hectares. Most of the area was granted national park status in 1970. Don’t miss the small town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with its ninth-century fortified church.
1st Day Lyon Dep 06:00 pm
Welcome to Lyon, the first stop of your river cruise on the Rhône! Lyon, otherwise known as Collonges, is the third largest city in France and is located in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The city is famous for its rich culinary scene with traditional French cuisine and therefore a true paradise for gourmets. Its historic town centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to well-preserved Renaissance architecture, secret passageways called Traboules and magnificent squares. Let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of this city before boarding our A-ROSA ship and embarking on an unforgettable cruise through the marvellous landscapes of France.
2nd Day Viviers Arr 10:00 am Dep 10:00 pm

Ready for an exciting adventure? From Viviers the bus will take you to the kayak station. After a briefing with detailed information you will paddle on one of the world's most famous kayak trails. Through calm waters and exciting rapids, you will experience the beautiful landscape. In between, you can have a picnic before you paddle back to the valley station.

Once you arrive at the Châeteau, experienced winegrowers will explain the secrets of the local grape varieties and introduce you to the art of winemaking. The Rhône crosses the landscape like a dark green ribbon. And you will cycle along the bank, beginning in Viviers. Then it becomes a bit more demanding: you will cycle on a former route of the Tour de France with a longer climb. Your guide will adjust speed to ensure that everyone can keep up. And the effort is definitely worth it: the magnificent descent back to Viviers takes you past Châteauneuf-du-Rhône.

Up to 300 metres deep, the Ardèche has carved out the typical limestone, forming one of the most beautiful landscapes in France. This includes the fairy-tale grottos. Along the river you will drive to one of the numerous grottos of the area, such as the Grottes des Madeleines with its subterranean halls. Continuing your trip to one of the lavender producers in the Ardèche-area, you will be shown the different types and species of lavender, as well as their usage in medicine, decoration and perfume production.

3rd Day Arles Arr 08:00 am
Arles in southern France is the Provençal city par excellence. This sun-drenched city of terracotta-tiled rooftops occupies a broad bend in the River Rhône. Many of its monuments have named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What’s more, Arles was once a great Roman port. As if all that weren’t reason enough to visit, the city was also home to Vincent van Gogh for a while. Did you know that?
Your private English-speaking guide will pick you up in front of the ship and show you Arles according to your wishes. Stroll through the most beautiful city in France, at least that's what the French say. Discover the city centre with its numerous Roman buildings or take a look at the amphitheatre. Let the Roman era pass by and experience the city where even Vincent van Gogh spent a year creating numerous masterpieces.

That’s what the French say, anyway. But the only way to be sure is to experience the charm of Provence’s former capital for yourself. We recommend that you begin your excursion by sampling some delicious calissons d’Aix, local sweets made with almonds and melon. Preferably in one of the many cafés along the elegant Cours Mirabeau. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, the great Impressionist artist, who had a studio in Aix. And after you’ve had a look around the city, there’ll still be enough time to purchase a typical Provençal souvenir, such as herbs or soap.

4th Day Arles Dep 05:00 am Port St. Louis Arr 09:00 am Dep 07:00 pm
Today we are leaving the beautiful city of Arles and sailing with you on the Rhône to Port St. Louis. You will have the opportunity to admire Arles again from the river and take a couple of pictures from the sun deck.
Port St. Louis
Around 40 kilometres south of Arles and some 65 kilometres west of Marseilles is the small port city of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône. The town is located on the left bank of the Rhône, just a few kilometres from the mouth of the river to the Mediterranean Sea. Here you’ll have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the Camargue and the Rhône. And the view from the Saint Louis tower will confirm just how stunning the Rhône region really is.
A private yacht will meet you in Port Saint Louis and take you off on a very special tour. In this area the Rhône Delta branches out into small arms through the Camargue, creating a unique landscape. In fact, the area is so wet that it’s even possible to grow rice here. During your tour you’ll take in stunning natural scenery and little villages – and you’ll have the chance to discover the famous Camargue horses and bulls. You’ll also sail out to a Mediterranean oyster farm, where you’ll learn all about how these shellfish are bred. And, naturally, there’ll be an opportunity for you to sample some oysters paired with a local wine.

Yacht and walking
Where land and sea merge, something wonderful is created. The Camargue is a natural wonder. And you will experience it first hand on this bus tour - with its flocks of flamingos and the famous white horses, the fauna is truly unique. Today, the free-roaming white Camargue horses and Camargue cattle are not wild animals anymore, but are kept on wide pastures that are typical for the region. We will continue to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a major pilgrimage site and a touristic hub of the Camargue. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church from the 9th century houses sacred relics of Marie Saloné and Marie Jacobé. Since 1448, a pilgrimage to the church has been held twice per year. The centre of veneration of Saint Sarah, also known as Sara the Black, is also here in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a place of pilgrimage for Roma. After a short walk you will have some free time.
Welcome to an exquisite excursion where you can savour the delicate delights of oysters and wine. Immerse yourself in culinary experiences and experience the perfection of this delicious combination in one of the most beautiful regions of France. Feel the salty sea climate and the refreshing sea breeze on the way to the oyster farm. Learn how organic oysters are grown and processed. With a glass of organic wine, you can of course also slurp the fresh oysters. You can't get any closer to the sea than this.

The city and the surrounding region have a warm climate thanks to the Mediterranean – which means a pleasant stay for you!

From Avignon, we head east into the heart of Provence, to the mountain villages of Gordes and Roussillon. Their old houses nestle against majestic ochre rocks and seem to merge with them. Then discover the "ochre nature trail" - the rocks here offer the visitor a special play of colours. Where the ochre industry once flourished, you will find a landscape in a wide variety of ochre shades - from a radiant yellow to a bright red. Numerous nuances of the ochre tone as well as the play of light and shadow make the sight unforgettable. After a walk through the impressive landscape, we return to the ship.
