Empowering peru women and opening the door to women in tourism.

We understand the importance of extra safety measures to make sure our Peru Women Guides and Porters are comfortable at all times. Sexual harassment is real in all industries, but with women and men sleeping so close together, we needed to be clear on proper behavior. We decided to hire an outside coach to review with everyone on our team the Do’s and Don’ts. He helped to reinforce the rules we have at Alpaca Expeditions, like no drinking on the job (this leads to poor choices), no touching, careful language, be respectful to everyone. And a reminder that we are a team and we need to stick up for each other and ourselves.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

What is Peru Hop?

Peru Hop is all about discovering the REAL Peru through the eyes of a local Peruvian.

After moving to Peru, we, the Irish owners, reflected and realized we had missed out on so many hidden gems and gained no local cultural insight when we were actual travelers to Peru in the past.

So we partnered with local Peruvians and we created Peru Hop, a unique way of traveling through Peru ensuring travelers have the most authentic local experience possible in a safe and affordable way.

Our unique system means you can buy 1 ticket and hop on and off at cities & towns all over Peru. No bus terminals, no taxis, no stress! Travel at your own pace and discover hidden gems only locals know.

As well as this, we have created spectacular Day Trips ideal for those very short on time who might want to fly within Peru but don’t want to miss out on amazing places like Huacachina Desert Oasis.

Whether you want a one-week trip fully planned in advance, or just hop on a bus and decide as you go, Peru Hop is perfect for every type of traveler.

Don’t be a typical tourist…Discover the REAL Peru with Peru Hop!

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

The 4 Best Tour Companies in Peru

Three travelers hiking the Salkantay trek in Peru on a guided tour

Peru is one of the most popular destinations in South America, owing to the fact that it’s home to the bucket-list favorite and Wonder of the World Machu Picchu . Around 500,000 people visit the ancient Incan citadel each year — a number that would be much higher if it wasn’t for the mandates put in place to prevent overcrowding.

But there’s more to Peru than just Machu Picchu. And there’s more to the Andes than the Inca Trail.

Peru is very geographically and culturally diverse (it’s the third-largest country on the continent) so there’s a lot more on offer here than most travelers expect. From the great dining destination of Lima to the floating islands off the Uros to the Peruvian Amazon to the pyramids and tombs of Batán Grande to the desert oasis of Huacachina, there is so much to see in this South American nation that limiting yourself to the Sacred Valley would be a missed opportunity.

For the intrepid traveler with plenty of time, many of these destinations can be explored solo. However, getting around Peru can be challenging and budget travelers with limited time should consider opting for an organized tour. And there are plenty of reputable and affordable tour companies in Peru that can make your journey smoother, allowing you to focus your attention and energy on the sites, people, culture, and history of the place.

To help you save money and make the most of your time, I’ve put together a list of the best tour companies in Peru. From walking tours to multi-day excursions to adventure-laden guided tours, these tours might not be as cheap as traveling solo but they will absorb the headaches that often come with traveling in a foreign country (especially one as large and slow to navigate as Peru).

Here are the best tour companies in Peru:

1. Intrepid Travel

Intrepid runs tours in every corner of the planet and they’re always a solid choice thanks to their focus on sustainability and responsible travel. I’ve been on a few of their tours over the years and they never disappoint. And while Intrepid offers tours of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, they also emphasize the other parts of this beautiful country too.

Their Classic Peru tour ($2,053 USD), for example, spans 9 days and circles the country, covering many of the major highlights, including Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Lake Titicaca.

Intrepid is one of my go-to companies for multiday tours. Whenever I book a multi-day trip I go with them. You should to. I can’t recommend them enough!

2. Alpaca Expeditions

You can do the classic four-day trek to Choquequirao for $520 USD or you can mix things up and do a longer eight-day hike that goes from Choquequirao to Machu Picchu for $1,250 USD, or you can combine it with a jaunt on the Incan Trail. There are tons of affordable options!

4. Colca Tours

Peru is such a geographically and culturally diverse place, it would take a lot of time, energy, and money to see it all on one trip — especially if you plan on hiking. If you’re short on time, consider a tour for some or all of your trip. After all, money returns; time does not.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Meet a master Quechua weaver

The Quechua people of Peru are known for their colorful handicrafts, and you’ll learn about the tradition of weaving from Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez, a local Quechua scholar. We’ll take you to Awakancha to see how the fine llama, alpaca and vicuña wool is sourced, then discover the ancient Andean weaving techniques.

See the Magic Circuit of the Water

Our Peru vacation packages take you to the Magic Circuit of the Water, the largest fountain complex in the world. The interactive fountains shoot water to a height of more than 80 meters and you’ll marvel at the mesmerizing lights, lasers and water swaying with the music.

Attend a workshop at the Peruvian Choco Museum

The museum’s chocolate makers will share their secrets and you’ll participate in the chocolate making process, with plenty of opportunity to sample the sweet delicacies.

Our top 5 things to do in Peru

Our Peru guided tours will reveal the best of Peru, from the mysteries of Machu Picchu to ancient Andean weaving and vibrant local markets.

Larco Museum

Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. You’ll take a journey through Peru’s history, with chronological galleries that display 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history, including ceramics, jewellery, crowns, masks, garments and gold vases.

One of the top museums on the continent, Museo Inka is an incredible showcase of the Inca Empire. You can spend hours immersing yourself in the world of the Incas, with rooms full of crockery, textiles, jewellery, goldwork, models, ancient mummies and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels).

Gold Museum of Peru

The Gold Museum of Peru is a fantastic display of Peruvian gold craftsmanship. There are thousands of items from centuries of Peruvian history, including the earflaps and bracelets of the Vicus, the belts and earrings of the Frias, the masks and wristbands of the Nazca and the crowns of the Chancay.

Best museums in Peru

Our guided trips to Peru will reveal the country’s rich history through the top museums, from ancient Peruvian goldwork to the wondrous world of the Inca Empire.

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

Best food in Peru

Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

The best time to visit Peru is during the winter season – during the months from May to September. These are the dry seasons so you’ll be able to enjoy the breathtaking views without fear of heavy rainfall or scorching heat.

If you want to see the popular attractions like Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu, 18 days should be enough for a round trip of Peru. You can do it in less time but it will be a lot more hectic!

Peru is absolutely safe for first time travelers! Although Peru is still a developing country, their tourism sector has strong foundations and tourists can have a safe and enjoyable time as long as they follow a few necessary precautions.

The most famous attraction in Peru is the Machu Picchu, a site of Incan origin and heritage and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Besides that, they also have Lake Titicaca and the Amazon Rainforest. If those aren’t enough, Cusco and Lima are cities that are steeped in local Peruvian culture.

Peru is a South American developing country and it is extremely budget-friendly. Whether you are planning to go on sightseeing tours or just roam around the cities, a budget of $50 – $150 should cover all your needs for a day!

Peru Tours & Travel Guide

Peru Attractions & Landmarks Guide

peru travel companies

Peru is probably best known for Machu Picchu, a major destination for multi-day trekking tours. But Peru is also home to the Amazon Basin, historic Spanish colonial-era cities, the boisterous capital Lima, and a share of 12,500-foot-high Lake Titicac a , with its host of artificial islands and bird life. Many travelers also combine trips to Peru with a visit to the Galapagos.

Peru: The name conjures up images of majestic natural wonders, deep canyons, Amazonian wildlife , superlative lakes, sacred valleys, and, of course, Machu Picchu - the Lost City of the Incas.

This is all for good reason -- Peru provides a little bit of everything, especially for the adventurous traveler. Few destinations captivate like Peru or offer such a diverse array of experiences packed into such a small country.

World-renowned Archaeological Treasures

Peru is home to one of the world’s most famous ruins: Machu Picchu . Nestled high in the Andean mountains, this nearly impenetrable site is a relic of a bygone Incan Empire, and is sure to captivate you with its physical impressiveness and the mystery surrounding the site. As you walk the sacred steps up to the former citadel, hanging on a dramatic cliff side, you’ll take in mountain vistas of rivers, waterfalls, and the ruins themselves for a memory you’ll cherish for life.

Whether you climb the mighty Andean spine across the legendary Inca trail, or sit in luxury aboard a classic train traversing the Sacred Valley, getting to Machu Picchu is half the experience. Traveling from the vibrant city of Cusco, a destination in its own right, to Machu Picchu you will find captivating Incan sites, quaint towns, archaeological gems, and natural wonders.

The Incans were not the only ones who established a foothold on these sacred lands. Go down from the mountains to the desert beaches to discover enigmatic pre-Incan civilizations. Encounter the beautiful tombs of the Moche civilization in Chiclayo, fly over the Nazca lines and ponder their mystery, or explore the UNESCO-listed Chan Chan –the former capital of the Chimu empire and the largest adobe city in the world.

Visiting Machu Picchu in Peru

While there is much to see in Peru, it is undeniable that Machu Picchu is one of the country's biggest attractions. This magnificent site high in the Andes is a classic bucket list item, and well worth seeing once.

There are   many ways to get to Machu Picchu . One of them most popular still is the Inca Trail. The Inca Trail is a trek along the Andean peaks and valleys to get to the specific spot of Machu Picchu, and although it is difficult, this hike is manageable for most able bodied and relatively fit travelers, and an incredible experience.

The trail takes 4 to 5 days to complete and you’ll be surrounded by spectacular scenery and history, brought to life by your guide the entire way. Historians suspect the Inca Trail was established for spiritual journeys, and even visitors traveling to Machu Picchu find the trek to have deeper meaning.

If you’re planning to hike the Inca Trail , be sure you purchase your permit into the park well ahead of time. They sell out extremely fast, and a limited number of people (500) are permitted on the trail per day. This includes porters and guides. Six months in advance is a good bet to ensure yourself a spot. It is also worth noting that you cannot hike the trail without a guide. Most large tour companies offer a Machu Picchu trek, so you have a lot of choice. Use Stride’s filtering tools to find the right tour size for you.

However, travelers are beginning to discover the other ways you can hike to Machu Picchu, which include the Lares Trek and Salkantay Trek. The Lares Treks is comparable , difficulty wise to the Inca Trail, but Salkantay is quite a bit more challenging, both in length and type.

Tours to Machu Picchu begin in Cusco, where you can take a few days to acclimate to the altitude, as well as get an introduction to Inca history in preparation for your journey into history.

If you’re not hiking, you will take one of three rail journeys from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. There are different price points, but if you’re willing to splurge, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train is well worth the price. Drift through the Sacred Valley in luxury, while gazing out at the historic landscape through large windows.

Aguas Calientes is the main hub for travelers going to Machu Picchu, about 15 minutes away from the site by bus. It is a good idea to stay in Aguas Calientes for a few days. Let yourself relax and not worry about seeing all of Machu Picchu in one fell swoop.

Use one day to catch the first bus after waiting in line at 4am to see the sunrise, but use your second day to go later. If you have time, don’t pass up a visit to the hot springs (Aguas Calientes literally translates to “hot water”.

The Diverse Natural Beauty of Peru

Though Peru is a small and navigable country, it boasts more biodiversity than the entire North American continent. This boils down to one major feature the country has access to: the Amazon Rainforest. Peru is the perfect base for the world’s most impressive rainforest: the mighty Amazon. Among many lodging options are eco-lodges nestled deep in the jungle, providing opportunities to encounter colorful toucans and macaws, howler monkeys, pink river dolphins, and perhaps even an elusive jaguar.

Beyond the Amazon, you can tour Manu National Park and the unique moss-covered Peruvian Yunga region, home to some of the world’s best birding. Afterwards, you can head toward the northern beaches to park a tent in beautiful sun-splashed Punta Sal or catch a wave at Huancayo, the world’s very first surfing beach.

Then of course there’s the unparalleled beauty of the Andes Mountains. There are many ways to discover the incredible Andes, from multi day hikes along historic trails, to treks through ancient villages.

Dotted throughout with ruins of ancient settlements, the Peruvian Andes are a pathway through history. Llamas roam the hills and native Andean people live here as they have for centuries. Nothing quite achieves the separation from the modern world like a trip through the Andes.

Peru Adventure Travel

Like much of South America, Peru is a natural destination for adventure travel - but not just of the zipline variety. In Peru, you can tour Lake Titicaca , the legendary lake on top of the world with it's intriguing customs and legends . Here, you’ll tour Puno’s fascinating floating artificial islands, and you can even stay in a freshwater island resort. These a breathtaking high-altitude retreats come complete with superlative sunsets, and allow you to experience Peru in a truly unique way.

Of course there’s the famous trek to Machu Picchu along the Inca Trail. This adventure is once in a lifetime and on the bucket list of many a traveler - both young and old. The Inca Trail is achievable for most healthy and moderately physically fit people, and an adventure in which you’ll follow in the footsteps of explorers and the ancient Inca Empire to reach the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu.

If, however, you are unable to trek, or less interested in 4 hard days of hiking through altitude up treacherous hills and camping on hard ground, there are other ways to reach Machu Picchu! Consider traveling on a rail journey through the beautiful Sacred Valley .

This is a very popular option for older travelers or those with young children. It’s also a good idea if you’re only in Peru a short time. You will still get an adventure and a half as you arrive in Aguas Calientes and eagerly await the bus to Machu Picchu.

For those who prefer more vigorous outdoors adventure, Peru also offers the unique Colca Canyon. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca Canyon is replete with Incan terraces and natural beauty. For incredible photo ops, go to Cruz del Condor, a peak where flocks of the normally reclusive Andean condor swarm at sunrise. Visit on a day hike or some tours operate multi day treks through the incredible landscape.

Trekking enthusiasts looking for opportunities in Peru beyond Machu Picchu, should absolutely explore the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Wind your way through tiny Andean villages and take in breathtaking views of lakes and sheer rock faces.

There is also an area of Peru known as the “poor man’s Galapagos.” This is Islas Ballestas, where you can travel to see incredible diverse wildlife, including some similar species to those you will experience in the Galapagos . These include penguins, sea lions, and Peruvian boobies.

Cultural Discoveries in Peru

Immersing yourself in Peru also means discovering its vibrant cities. Lima , Peru’s capital, offers fascinating museums and “peñas,” lively traditional dance halls that hold weekly Peruvian dance shows. Though travelers should remain cautious in Lima, which is still a big city in a developing country, a tour in particular you will find more peace of mind than as a solo traveler.

For a different urban experience, a tour of Peru could include the magnificent white city of Arequipa and its Spanish colonial treasures. Arequipa is an architectural wonder, famous for its intact 16th century churches, and home to Monesterio de Santa Catalina, a “city within a city,” whose pastel walls and priceless frescoes make it one of the most beautiful convents in the world.

Cusco is another of Peru’s exciting cities, though often thought of as a mere stepping stone to Machu Picchu. However, it is so much more. Travelers are discovering the delights of Cusco , which include its long and fascinating history as the capital of the Inca Empire, followed by the Spanish occupation and colonization.

Festivals in Peru

In Peru, culture is never far off. Every weekend, towns across the country have celebrations and festivals where you can watch somber religious processions followed by raucous folk marching bands.

Deep ties to folklore from many native tribes, as well as many Spanish influenced customs make Peru one of the best destinations for celebrations, and parades.

Some Peruvian festivals you might encounter while on a tour in Peru include:

1. Carnaval, March : Perhaps the best known festival, Carnaval is celebrated throughout South America, taking place in the days leading up to the Catholic holiday of Lent. Carnaval is a bright and vibrant multi-day celebration. One of the best places in Peru to experience this festival is Cajamarca in Northern Peru, where traditional dances and ancient traditions are in the forefront.

2. Fiesta de la Vendimia, March : this is a traditional wine festival, which takes place in Ica, a small town on Peru’s southern coast. Complete with grape stomping events, tastings, music and dancing, it’s a can’t miss event for wine enthusiasts.

3. Fiesta de la Cruz, May : This is the “festival of the cross” and while it has significant religious meaning and undertones, like much of the festivals in Peru, it’s more about celebration than sombor devotion. Go just to see the mysterious “scissor dancers” a tradition that harkens back to the 16th century, connected to resistance to Spanish rule.

4. Fiesta del Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun), June : The ancient Inca were obsessed with the Sun, and this festival is directly related to some of their more serious beliefs. Celebrated on the winter solstice every year, this festival involves colorful traditional dress, parades, and performances to native music and using native instruments, all presented in worship to the sun. If you’re in Cusco on June 24th, this is an event not to be missed.

5. Virgen del Carmen, July : In the small town of Paucartambo, one of the more raucous festivals is held. With three days of drinking, dancing, eating, music and singing in the traditional language of Quechua. This is a celebration that draws people by the thousands. Go for the intense energy as people go through the streets wearing scary costumes, and masks. Often the celebrations end up at the cemetery.

6. Puno week, November : Puno is known as the “folklore capital of Peru” so it’s no wonder it has one of the most popular festivals. This particular week-long festival is to celebrate the Amerindian roots in the area. An enormous procession happens from Lake Titicaca into the center of Puno, with loud music, dancing, and revelry.

Peruvian Amazon and Rainforest Tours

The imposing Amazon is one of the longest rivers in the world, and winds its way through six countries, including Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil , and Ecuador . Peru is it’s source, and one of the most ecologically diverse portions of the Amazon River  - 60% of Peru’s landscape belongs to the Amazon, separated into two distinct ecological regions, and home to 5% of the country's population.

Amazon river cruises   are quickly becoming a popular “adventurous” mode of travel for river cruisers. It’s one of the best ways to see the world in comfort and cover a lot of ground.

When considering your tour to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest , there are a few things to keep in mind. The high water season in Peru’s Amazon is from December through May. The low water season lasts from June through November. Rain is common throughout the year, but heaviest in December to May.

You can visit the Peruvian Amazon at any time of year, but if you choose to go during a wet period, your chances of shore excursions could be limited, due to flooding and difficulty navigating through muddy paths. Mosquitos also love this time of year, and Peru is a Zika zone, so be very careful when traveling during wet weather. Wear lots of bug spray and wear long sleeves and pants.

If you choose to take a Peru river cruise in the dry season (June through November), you will have much more opportunity to disembark and explore the jungle. However, some of the smaller creeks and byways that are navigable during the rainy season are now inaccessible to river boat vessels. So you won’t have the chance to explore “off the beaten path” (or river as the case may be) if you travel during this time of year.

Birding Tours in Peru

Peru is an extremely popular destination for birding, particularly in the Amazon. Home to nearly 2,000 separate species, including 120 rare species only found in Peru, it’s a birding enthusiasts dream destination.

To see some of Peru’s incredible aviary creatures, plan a long birding tour where you can visit several habitat types, as well as increase your chances of seeing the rarer species. Some birding tours to Peru are over two weeks long, providing ample time to see the country and learn about the local wildlife and cultures.

Take a birding tour to discover such elusive varieties as the predatory Black-Collared Hawk, the male Golden-Headed Manakin, with his oddly stark colors of gold and black, the prehistoric looking Hoatzin, which for laymen may be confused with a Quetzel. Of course you’ll see plenty of Amazonian Macaws, with their bright red, yellow, and blue feathers, and Toucans of which there are 40 different species.

Food in Peru

The local cuisine in Peru is generally excellent - combining elements from the coast (seafood), Andean (pre-Hispanic dishes), Amazonian (palm hearts and other exotic foods), and Spanish colonial influences. Adventurous eaters may even try a plate of Cuy, a Peruvian national dish centered around roasted Guinea pig.

Ceviche is another classic national dish in Peru. This delectable concoction has been copied and interpreted all around the world, but finds it’s roots in Peru, where simplicity is what showcases the fresh, flavorful ingredients. Ceviche is traditionally made with cubed chunks of raw fish, marinated in citrus juice for up to three hours (during this process, the fish becomes “chemically cooked” so is not technically raw when it’s served), and finished with fresh lime. Some of the best ceviche in Peru can be found in the capital, Lima, where it is served with cold sweet potatoes or corn.

Potatoes are a staple in Peruvian cuisine, as the country is home to nearly 2000 varieties. Whether you enjoy potatoes, stuffed, fried, boiled, sliced, sweet, hot or cold, you will find them in Peru. Peru is mostly a coastal nation, so another staple food item is seafood. Not only used in ceviche, as described above, but also made using many different regional methods, from stews to steamed.

Cocktail enthusiasts will enjoy the history of Pisco that can be found throughout Peru. Originally concocted by Spanish settlers in the 16th century, this brandy like drink is made similar to wine. The other major country known for Pisco is Chile, and both countries put their own unique spin on the drink.

Peru chooses to non dilute their offering. Chile is the older official producer of Pisco (official regions were declared in 1931 - 1991 in Peru), but Peru has certainly paved a way in Pisco production. Used in a lot of modern mixology, it’s a classic drink for travelers visiting Peru.

The Language in Peru

Peru is a multilingual country, the official language of which is Spanish, however many diverse native languages are used as well. Those that speak these languages are typically bilingual in Spanish. In the main tourist areas, such as Machu Picchu and Cusco, English is fairly widely spoken, however when you venture farther afield, you’ll have an easier time communicating in Spanish.

While not a full blown dialect, Peruvian Spanish differs slightly from European Spanish. A result of native words creeping into everyday speech and local pronunciation differences. The most well known indigenous language is Quechua, many variations of which is spoken by the various Quechua peoples.

It is significant in that it pre-dates the Inca Empire and is still spoken today, despite the Spanish conquest in the 1600s.  Peru offers a dizzying array of options, Stride is here to guide you toward the best guided group tours to experience Peru’s dynamic sights, sounds, and flavors. Isn’t it time you said “Hola!” to Peru?

Whether you’re exploring the cobbled streets of Arequipa, bobbing on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca or learning about mummies in Nazca, our Peru tours will have you feeling like a modern-day Indiana Jones. Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the   European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese   and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or   futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our 10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chilli peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumoured to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the centre of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organised civilisations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilisations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilisations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Peru's more recent history has been dominated by military coups and regional disputes. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices levelling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day Inca Trail Express from Lima tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every colour, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colourful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savour the flavours of Lima on our 20 day Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 metres, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometres. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or travelled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our 9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colourful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has travelled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewellery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Highlights of Peru

However you get to Machu Picchu – whether it’s through spectacular scenery on the classic Inca Trail, through small Andes villages on the Inca Quarry Trail, or over mega mountain passes on the Choquequirao Trail – the feeling of reaching this otherworldly archaeological site will stay with you for a lifetime. This ancient 15th-century citadel is a spectacular reminder of the ingenuity of the Inca civilisation.

Be dazzled by the 'White City' of Arequipa. Standing at the foot of El Misti Volcano, Arequipa vies with Cusco for the title of Peru's most attractive city. Shrouded in mystery, the Nazca Lines is one of the world’s most intriguing archaeological sites. Thanks to dry desert conditions, these geoglyphs – which date back to the 2nd century BC – and the mummies, textiles, ceramics and other relics that have been discovered here, offer a rare glimpse into pre-Inca life. Climb to the viewing platform, or perhaps take a flight over the lines for an epic view.

4. Puerto Maldonado

Experience the magic of the Amazon on an enthralling jungle adventure. Hike beneath cool, leafy canopies while looking for monkeys, parrots and otters; cruise along the Amazon on a canoe; learn about the healing properties of native plants with a local guide, and swap your alarm clock for the songs and croaks of toucans and other tropical birds.

  • Real Peru to Bolivia

Welcome to the capital of Peru. Lima is one of the most up-and-coming foodie destinations, so the best way to explore is through your tastebuds! Be sure to sample ceviche (the country’s national dish), washed down with a pisco sour in the bustling Barranco neighbourhood. Then, stroll through the beautiful Lima Cathedral, or swing your hips to folk music at a peña  (a traditional Peruvian music venue).

Dive into learning about the history of the lake and its communities, or simply enjoy the bliss of being immersed in nature.

  • Lake Titicaca Homestay

Cusco is South America's oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Inca for two centuries before the Spanish arrived. Today, it’s a fascinating combination of both cultures. Tour the Coricancha Temple, wander the World Heritage-listed Cusco Cathedral, peruse the colourful San Pedro market, or do the incredible Inkilltambo trek on the city’s outskirts.

It’s also home to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, another site that will show you how incredible the Inca civilisation was. Take part in an ancient cooking ritual known as pachamanca with the Chichubamba community; do a traditional chocolate and corn beer workshop; or climb the steep terraces to Ollantaytambo where sweeping views over the valley await.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organised), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service is really good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Peru?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good shout for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they're not always provided. Toilet paper isn't supposed to be flushed, and most toilets have a bin next to them to dispose of the used toilet paper. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if travelling on the Inca Trail.

What will it cost for a…?

Prices in restaurants and stores are generally listed in Peruvian   nuevos soles   (PEN). Below are the average prices you can expect to pay for everyday items and services:

  • Short ride on a public city bus = 0.5-2 PEN
  • Bottle of beer = 8 PEN
  • Street cart snack/lunch = 5-10 PEN

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Make sure you carry cash for when you're dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when travelling away from the larger cities.

  • 19 April: Good Friday
  • 1 May: Labour Day
  • 25 June: Inti Raymi

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.

Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.

Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.

What kinds of accommodation will I be staying in?

Experience home-grown hospitality and food while staying with a local family who live right on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

  • Jungle Lodge

Stay close to the wildlife action in a lodge located within the leafy wilds of the awesome Amazon Jungle.

Camping along the Inca Trail is one of the world's most sought-after travel experiences. Bond with new friends over delicious local food and rest up before another day of trekking.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Peru?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:

1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru an LGBTQIA+friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a Pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travellers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when travelling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.
