Salt Lake City is a true cycling mecca for roadies and mountain bikers alike.
Many cycling pros and passionate recreational riders call SLC home, and it’s no wonder. At 4,200 feet, the city is perfectly positioned between the flats of the Salt Lake Valley and the steep relief of the Wasatch Mountains, which makes for a whole lot of challenging, fun terrain. (America’s toughest stage race, the Tour of Utah, is based here.) As a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community, Salt Lake City has beautiful bikeways, some of which extend almost 40 miles along creeks and through parks. With multiple roads snaking uphill to the east, it’s justly famous for canyon cycling, too. And when it comes to mountain biking, the Wasatch is a paradise of wildflower fields, wide-open basins, beautiful ridges, and primordial landscapes. With such fabulous pavement and singletrack, some might argue that there’s no use for a gravel bike here — but then you’d miss Albion Basin and Farmington Creek, and these are must-visit destinations! Several big rides kick off in SLC itself, including the Saints to Sinners Bike Relay, the Salt Lake City Marathon Bike Tour, and the Huntsman SportsFest.

Fat Tire Biking
Utah is world-renowned for mountain biking with its alpine singletrack in the north and slickrock terrain down south, but people here don’t garage their bikes in winter. They just grab the one with the fattest, squishiest tires in the rack and ride on the snow . Fat tire mountain biking (or snow biking) has become the latest rage among cycling enthusiasts and newbies, who can jump on the very-forgiving equipment and explore some of Utah’s most scenic trails.
Winter Mountain Biking in Southern Utah
No Special Skills Required
If you can ride a bike, then you can ride a fat tire bike. Fat tire biking is probably one of the best alternatives for your non-skiing family member and a bonus activity for your Utah ski vacation.
Fat tire bikes (or fatties) look similar to mountain bikes except that the tires are about five inches wide instead of two inches. This girth (and very low air pressure) provides the biker more stability and shock absorption, making it easier to ride, even on snow. If you grew up riding a cruiser on the beach or around the neighborhood, it has a similar sticky feel.
Where and When to Ride
Fat tire mountain bikes are allowed on any Utah trail or road that allows mountain bikes. Because fatties are heavier than most mountain bikes, flat or rolling trails are easier to ride than steeper ones. If you want to ride on snow-covered trails, then groomed or tamped-down trails are the easiest (it is difficult to pedal through deep snow).
The best fat tire riding is on tamped-down snow. So, don’t do it on a powder day! If the ski runs are icy, then the fatty trails are probably prime. Biking is also a great choice in shoulder seasons (early winter, late spring). Just stay off muddy trails to avoid creating ruts. Check with local bike shops or online for trail conditions.

Fat tire biking has become the latest rage among cycling enthusiasts and newbies
Antelope Island State Park
Fat tire biking is fun, but you can even go looking for bison while riding at Antelope Island State Park. Most of the giant beasts have been corralled for winter, but fat tire bikers may spot one or two meandering along the banks of The Great Salt Lake. There are numerous trails throughout the park, almost all of which are open (but not groomed) for cyclists. The roads throughout the park are also excellent options for riders to enjoy the views and the wildlife. Warning: Do not approach or feed these large, fast, wild animals under any circumstances!
North Fork Park
North Fork Park is popular with cross-country skiers, fat tire bikers and even stargazers. Whatever your winter pursuit, Ogden Nordic maintains and grooms over 10 miles of well-marked trails through this park located in the bucolic Ogden Valley. Daily trail passes may be purchased online. Contact Diamond Peak for bike rental information.

Park City Area
Bonanza flats.
Newly-built Bonanza Flats is at the top of Empire Pass, providing great views of the entire area, but be prepared to walk/climb about a quarter-mile to get there. You will be rewarded! Starting near the Montage, walk/climb past the gate on Marsac to the trailhead. Note that parking is limited, especially on weekends.
Historic Rail Trail
In Park City, the Historic Rail Trail, a wide paved and gravel path, stretches 27 miles from White Pine Touring in Park City (6900’) to Echo Reservoir (5280’). Head out through town into scenic canyons. Just remember that you’ll be climbing, albeit gently, on the return. The Rail Trail also links to the trail system at Round Valley.
Round Valley
Round Valley provides miles and miles of interconnected trails for fat tire biking. This extensive trail system is also popular with hikers and cross-country skiers and is well-marked throughout. There are many entry points and options. For example, you can start at Quinn’s Trailhead, ride the road past the National Ability Center to Matt’s Flat, up to Seventy 101, PorcuClimb, Downward Dog (a downhill flow trail) and back to the road, or you can just take a simpler ride out and back.
Salt Lake City Area
Corner canyon.
Corner Canyon, Salt Lake City’s most-popular trail system, is popular with fat tire bikes, as well. Although the trails are not groomed, hikers and snowshoers tamp down many, making them a great option if you’re on the south end of the valley. Potato Hill instructional area is a great place to start. From there, Ann’s Trail is more challenging but, just halfway up at Ann’s Point, you’re high enough to view the entire valley as well as The Great Salt Lake in the distance.
Little Dell Reservoir at East Canyon
Little Dell Reservoir at East Canyon is perfect for beginners with a “false flat” climb from the parking lot at Little Dell Reservoir up the closed snow-packed and groomed road through East Canyon. Continue up the road as far as you want/can (it gets steeper after the first mile). If it hasn’t snowed in a few days, then return to the parking lot via the Lower Mormon Trail (starting from the outhouse on the East side about one mile up). This gentle but scenic shore trail is popular with hikers who kindly tamp it down for bikers to enjoy.
Millcreek Canyon
In Salt Lake City, Millcreek Canyon is a stunning out-and-back fat tire ride up the closed snow-packed and groomed road from milepost 4 to the end at Big Water Yurt (coveted reservations required for overnight stay). Be prepared to share the trail with cross-country skiers and very happy doggies until Elbow Fork, where the traffic diminishes as well as the grade.
No special skills requiried — if you can ride a bike, then you can ride a fat tire bike.
Guides & Rentals
If you’re unsure where to go or where to rent, then hire a guide to do everything but pedal the bike for you. All Seasons Adventures provides bikes, helmets and water bottles and takes you to Round Valley for a guided two-hour ride based on ability (beginner-expert; two-person minimum). If you’re staying in Park City, they’ll even handle transportation at no extra cost.
If you want to go it alone, then you can rent a bike and helmet at several local bike shops, including White Pine Touring and Jan’s in Park City. Book ahead for guaranteed availability, especially during holidays. Ask the store personnel where to ride. Chances are they’ve recently been on the trails.
Always remember trail etiquette: If you’re on a trail groomed for Nordic skiing, then stay out of the parallel grooves they’ve cut for skis. Uphill riders have the right-of-way to downhill cyclists, but everyone must yield to pedestrians and horses and the occasional, very-happy off-leash dog.
What to Pack
Dress in layers . You will warm up climbing and cool down descending. For shoes, hiking boots with warm socks are perfect. Gloves or mittens are essential. Sunglasses are always a good idea on sunny or breezy days. Light backpack or fanny pack are suitable for stashing things. Helmets (ski or bicycle) are highly recommended to protect your noggin and keep it warm.
Water . Fat tire biking, like any activity in Utah, necessitates staying hydrated.
Snacks . Bring them!
Camera . Make sure someone in your group has a camera to take pictures or videos. You’ll want to brag to everyone when you get home. (Read: " A Photographer’s Guide to Mindful Travel ")

Came in to get my handlebars tightened, did a great job! What's cool too is the fact that they let you have a chance to test the e-bikes
I just finished paying off my EBIKE I got last year I went in with credit from there 3rd party rent to own had $500 to put down on a bike which I should've kept and paid the 3rd party but I asked if I can lower the price if I give $500 down it was A USED Magnum Summit for around $2000 they didn't show me anything at all sent me on my way after we had to call the 3rd party and get a code and I end up paying double and losing out on that $500 down.
This place was soooooo friendly. They were friendly on the phone, friendly in person, like everyone there was friendly. It's a good thing they don't have barstools because I think people would just hang out. The mechanics took time to explain everything with me including how to take care of things on my own - which I probably won't ever do, but I thought it was cool that they would teach me anyways. All I can say is if you need a good shop for your ebike check them out! Also, they have the cutest shop dogs. Me and this pug became bff's.
We always rent bikes from SLC Ebikes when hosting guests from out of town as a way to explore the city. SOOO much fun, outstanding customer service, and great selection of bikes. Customer for life!
It's been years since I had ridden a bike, but it was like-well, riding a bike-to get back on one this weekend. My wife and I wanted to browse the downtown neighborhoods on bikes and found that this shop was the perfect answer for us. We made a reservation ahead, although it doesn't seem to be necessary. The guy who runs the shop (I missed his name) showed us several bikes and explained their functions and ultimately recommended bikes for each of us. We went with the traditional cruiser for our neighborhood meandering. After some quick orientations and helmet fittings, we were off. Riding the bike was very similar to a traditional bicycle, with the exception of the power that kicks in and helps you gain speed. That's fun. And very helpful when you're fighting to get uphill. The bike will jump in and assist you like a champ. There is onsite parking and it's easily accessed right off 700 East. Give it a go!
We rented electric bikes here, and it was amazing The owner was super nice and friendly and helped us map out a path. The electric bikes are reasonable priced and super fun We rode up into the mointains and had an amazing time. the bikes are was easy to operate and the bikes do most of the work. My sister just had knee surgery and she was able to ride with no problem. I 100% recommend this place amd i will come back here if i make it oit to salt lake again
First, I'll admit, I'm no biker. I'm ashamed to say that even though I come from a country where bikes and vespas are common, I know nothing about bikes, except for how to ride them (and I know how to ride, you know what I'm sayin'? ;) but when in Utah, do as the Romans do. The pros: + the bike room. OK, I've never seen so many electric bikes. Hell, I've never even seen an electric bike. + electric bikes are cool. They allow you the illusion of working without doing any actual work. Like a recumbent bike at the gym. + owner (Matt) is super chill. So chill, he's ice cold. I'd throw him in a cooler with a few beers and not worry. + not a bad fee. $20 for an hour? (without tax) shoot, sign me up for an hour then boss! + so many bikes to choose from! The cons - they don't have baskets on their bikes. There goes my dream of living out a romantic comedy with Owen Wilson biking on a beach. Note: listen carefully to the instructions so u don't wipe out or crash. U do not want to pay for the damages not do you want to wipe out going 20+ mph.
Matt and his wife were awesome and so hospitable. We were in town for the day and just wanted to explore, they provided the perfect bikes for us and suggested some awesome places for us to explore. We really enjoyed our day and will definitely be going back to SLC Ebikes the next time we're in town. PS- I was so in love with the bike I may have to buy one for myself.
Cameron helped me fantabulously! She was knowledgeable, honest and friendly. She helped me test 3 bikes all the while helping a steady stream of customers. If your looking to purchase a top model or looking for a deal call ahead and make an appointment with the owners. I love that they are so near the park and some hills for great test experience. Please support your locL businesses.
I decided to rent an EBike on my SLC overnight and I love everything about it. Was able to cover 20 miles in under 2 hours from there store up City Creek Canyon. The owners are amazing Definitely coming back.

A peek inside one of the most exclusive ski and golf resorts in the country
Wasatch peaks ranch has a tom fazio golf course and five ski lifts, but it’s not deer valley-luxe — at least not yet..
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A ski lift at the exclusive and private ski and golf resort of Wasatch Peaks Ranch is pictured above the hamlet of Peterson in Morgan County on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023. A judge recently issued a preliminary injunction forcing the luxury resort to halt sales and construction.
Editor’s note • The following is an excerpt from the Salt Lake Tribune’s new Open Lands newsletter, a twice-a-month newsletter about Utah’s land, water and air from the environment team. Morgan • The gatehouse at Wasatch Peaks Ranch has a living roof seeded with Gambel oaks culled from the property. A low-slung stone-and-wood building with clean lines and tall picture windows, it is appropriately both elegant and imposing.
It is also one of the few completed structures at the private, ultra-luxe ski and golf community under construction in the mountains above Peterson.
On a crisp December morning, Ed Schultz, the property’s managing director, steered his black king cab truck around the building and up the road toward the development beyond.
And just like that, we’re behind the granite curtain.

To call Wasatch Peaks Ranch enigmatic feels like it falls short of capturing the great lengths the Morgan County mountain resort goes to to maintain its mystique. Its website contains a one-sentence description and forms for inquiries. Prospective members, according to Schultz, must come packing no fewer than two referrals. They then must be vetted and approved before they are even shown any real estate.
Most people don’t even get as far as the gate.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The gate house for the private luxury ski and golf resort of Wasatch Peaks Ranch is pictured on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
A host/guard posted up in a van along the turnoff from Peterson, about a half mile below the gatehouse, turns around anyone who doesn’t have official business at the resort. Even those who have an appointment may not get beyond the Bar W Lodge, the temporary site of the resort’s headquarters. The Bar W sits on a swath of foothill property separating Wasatch Peaks Ranch from the burg of Peterson and is owned by a local farmer. He has previously rented it out as an Airbnb and hunting lodge , and it houses a collection of mounted trophies ranging from moose to a mountain lion that spans the pine-lined wall of the great room.
Wasatch Peaks Ranch’s owners — only one of whom is known — would have preferred to stay off the radar. Yet a lawsuit brought against the ranch and Morgan County created cracks in that facade. County residents sued for the right to vote on zoning changes made to accommodate the development, and after four years of litigation and revelations, the case appeared destined for the state Supreme Court. Then, in a sudden reversal last month, all three parties reached an agreement. The residents dropped their lawsuit in exchange for a 2,300-acre conservation easement on the 12,740-acre property plus $4 million for a foundation benefiting citizens of the county.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Renderings illustrate development plans for the private luxury ski and golf resort of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in the Morgan valley on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
Back in December, though, when the vote was still a very real possibility, Wasatch Peaks Ranch invited about 500 locals to tour the grounds. They gazed upon a land that hereafter will likely only be seen by construction workers, a few ski patrollers, close to 200 resort employees and the “1% of the 1%” who can afford a home within the complex (plus their guests, of course).
It’s no Shangri-La, though. At least not yet.
As of December, most of what had been built only hinted at what Wasatch Peaks Ranch will one day become. At that time, Schultz said the resort had about 115 members. At full buildout, the community is slated to include no more than 750 residential units, including homes, condos and townhouses built in 14 phases
Just beyond the gate, the skeletal frames of two of those villas arose from the hillside along the road. Considering the resort pitches itself as a place where homes will blend with nature, the are huddled awfully close together. They both also existed in a rough-hewn stage. A stop-work order imposed by the judge following his decision to allow a vote on the development’s zoning had halted construction on the property for two months. Instead of putting up siding, workers were laying down plywood sheets as temporary roofs to protect the structures against the elements.
Further up the smooth blacktop, more naked frames, a spattering of construction trailers and more than a half-dozen cranes come into view in a wide clearing to the south. One day, this will be the North Village, Schultz said. Here a collection of townhomes, condos and some single-family homes will encircle a community center. Plans call for a market, a tavern and a skier services building centered around a gondola leading up to the main ski lodge.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Wasatch Peaks Ranch in Morgan valley is pictured on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, where snow covers open areas that make up part of the 18-hole Tom Fazio golf course. The private luxury ski and golf resort above the hamlet of Peterson was recently issues a preliminary injunction forcing a halt to sales and construction.
Amid all the upturned soil lies what looked like a large meadow blanketed in pristine snow. In actuality, it’s an 18-hole, Tom Fazio -designed golf course that has yet to be played.
Even further up the road, several ski lifts come into view. Schultz pulls his truck into a parking spot next to a red canvas building, one of two serving as a placeholder for the Oaks Lodge ski center. Though pains have been taken to spruce the place up, it’s no Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley Resort with its luxe wood-and-stone decor. Metal chairs with brown pleather padding surround several high-top and dining tables. Members can grab a free snack or hot cocoa here or order a full meal from one of two food trucks outside. There also is an alcove lined with cubbies for members to stash their gear.
Just out the door sit several fire pits ringed by plastic Adirondack chairs that look up at a ski area even the residents of Alta would envy. Most runs are rated black and double black diamonds with a few blue cruisers thrown in. Four aerial lifts, most of them high-speed and all recently manufactured by Leitner-Poma , and one Magic Carpet are already turning at Wasatch Peaks Ranch with nary a lift line in site. Another five are planned, including the gondola into the village.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The base of ski operations for the exclusive private luxury ski and golf resort of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in Morgan valley is pictured on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
The real draw of the development, however, is the view.
The jagged teeth of Thurston Peak are just a lift ride away. Meanwhile, through the trees to the southeast emerges a sweeping vista of the valley and the mountains surrounding it. It’s a clear day, which means, Schultz said, those snow-covered peaks in the distance are actually Kimball Junction, near Park City. More mountain views extend to the north and east.
Schultz said Wasatch Peaks Ranch doesn’t want to do anything to impede those views. The resort has strict building restrictions that will keep most of the construction out of the public eye, hidden behind the rolling hills that rise toward the more dramatic peaks. Even at night, self-imposed DarkSky ordinances should suitably cloak the community.
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Acorn lift is pictured at the private luxury ski and golf resort of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in the Morgan valley on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
“They’re developing in a way to keep it looking as rural and secluded as possible,” Dana Farmer, the county residents’ lawyer acknowledged, “within the development and from outside the development.”
It’s not everything the Morgan County residents wanted . They were hoping for their day in court and to galvanize laws granting citizens the right to a referendum. But ensuring mountain views untouched by development doesn’t seem like a bad consolation prize.
At least from the outside looking in.

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti
From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.
In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.
Two years before that, Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.
Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.
BEACH BAGELS
The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

FORAGE MARKET
Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

MISTER BAGEL
There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

SCRATCH BAKING CO.
You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

THE WORKS CAFE
The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

Few cities boast hiking and biking trails minutes — yes, minutes! — from downtown restaurants, arts, culture and breweries. But Salt Lake City does.
Picture this: You’re overlooking the entire Salt Lake Valley from the foothills. It’s late morning. The sunshine kisses your cheeks and fresh air fills your soul. By lunchtime, you cool off with a cold one in a downtown brewery .
Have only a half-day or evening to hit the trails? Easy. Our metropolis capitalizes on its proximity to outdoor recreation. That, combined with a nearby microbrewery scene, means no waiting in traffic and no need to dress up. Here, hat hair and dusty sneaks are encouraged.
Use these 6 tips to optimize Salt Lake’s trailhead-to-brew-pub experience with ease:
3-Day Salt Lake Brewery Pass
Add to Cart
1. Buy a Salt Lake City Brewery Pass
First things first: Plan your post-hike or bike reward at a downtown brewery. Better yet, get an instant $5 credit (sent to your phone) for food, beers or merch from each of the 15 brewers.
Salt Lake brewers are proud of their craft… and their craft beer. Sours, pale ales, lagers, blonds, and ambers showcase sassy names that play off Utah’s unique clash of culture and outdoor action: Polygamy Porter, Full Suspension Pale Ale, Happy Valley Hefeweizen, Cottonwood Cider, Deseret IPA and Cutthroat Pale Ale to name a few.
Try a favorite blend or sip something new. The Salt Lake City Brewery Pass pleases locals and visitors with discounts to fan-favorite pubs for 1 day, 3 days or 90 days.
2. BYOB(ike), Rent from a Local Bike Shop or Try a GREENBike
Next, gear up. If hiking, put on those trail shoes and go. If biking, let’s get you a bike rental.
If you want to stick to sidewalks and streets, try Salt Lake’s bike-sharing program for locals and visitors: GREENbike. This bike-share system offers a network of many bike stations throughout the downtown area. For a small fee, you can take ANY bike, from ANY station, as many times as you like. A 24-hour access pass or a 4-day pass allows GREENbike riders to take as many 30-minute trips as they want over the course of the purchased time period.
Rent an e-bike by the hour or for the day from Salt Lake eBikes . Great for all ages and abilities, electric bikes are as safe as traditional bikes and allow riders to go further and faster. Salt Lake has wonderful bike lanes and paths. The shop also rents helmets, safety vests and bike locks.
Hit up a local bike shop to take your pick of mountain bike or road bike rentals. Trek Bicycle Salt Lake City Downtown gets high marks for its knowledgeable and passionate staff. Wasatch Touring touts a long history (since 1972!) as Salt Lake's original outdoor gear shop. Canyon Sports turns its popular downtown ski rental shop into a bike rental hub in the summer.
3. Walk, Road Bike or E-Bike City Creek Canyon and Memory Grove
Talk about easy access. Memory Grove Park sits less than a mile from Temple Square , a downtown landmark easy to spot from your hotel. The peaceful park hosts walkers, joggers, photographers and picnickers, alongside a meditation chapel, war memorials and the Memorial House . It connects to Memory Grove Trail , which meanders past the Utah State Capitol and along the rushing City Creek. The well-maintained dirt trail is a gentle hike for all ages and off-leash dogs.
The roadway section provides access to all bikes — e-bikers, GREENbikes, road bikes and mountain bikes — and connects to a paved section of City Creek Canyon trail, rated moderate only for a slight elevation gain. A dirt trail section sends mountain bikers and hikers further up City Creek Canyon and to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
4. Hike, Trail Run or Mountain Bike Bonneville Shoreline Trail
The Bonneville Shoreline Trail —or BST, as the locals call it—meanders along the foothills adjacent to downtown. In addition to being one of the best mountain bike trails near Salt Lake, the trail system offers prime viewing of wildlife, native flowers, and the vast Salt Lake Valley.
Here’s a fun fact: The BST is currently over 100 miles long, with plans to build it over 280 miles. It’s named after the Ice Age-era Lake Bonneville that filled the Salt Lake Valley before its shores dried up, leaving its present-day remnant: The Great Salt Lake.
Join hikers, mountain bikers, off-leash dogs and trail runners. Outdoorsy Salt Lakers fill the trail, starting at varying trailheads and parking lots. Find one-mile jaunts or many-mile journeys. Longer Bonneville Shoreline Trail routes lead bikers and hikers to the University of Utah campus, Red Butte Garden , Natural History Museum , Hogle Zoo , This is the Place Heritage Park and Emigration Canyon.
4. Hike or Mountain Bike Ensign Peak
Take in more views from the Ensign Peak overlook. This trail is another great option if you have an hour or two. The hike itself is a 1-mile, out-and-back trail up a steep service road from the trailhead, but it can be connected from Memory Grove (adding another 1.4 miles) if you want to avoid the car altogether. Mountain bikers choose between a couple of options if connecting to or from Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
Save with a 3-Day Salt Lake Brewery Pass
6. celebrate your sweat session at a local brewhouse.
And for the finale….an ice-cold local craft beer.
Not only are breweries busy epicenters of beer-making, but they’re also community hubs for conversation and connection. Salt Lake City breweries are filled with hikers, bikers, remote workers, lunch-goers, business meetups, food truck loyalists and cornhole aficionados.
There’s no better way to understand our city tapestry — and find other outdoorsy, craft-loving people like yourself — than to visit one of Salt Lake’s best breweries and distilleries .
Friendly editor’s note:
It may go without saying, but we love our visitors to get back to their hotels safe and happy. Salt Lake City temperatures climb past 90 in July and August. Whatever mode of adventure you choose in our foothills, (1) plan out your route ahead of time and (2) pack plenty of water and sun protection.
