Send Her My Love by Journey

Songfacts®:

  • This is about a guy who had a girlfriend, but had to let her go. He thought she deserved better, and they both knew that the love wasn't real. When he dreams, he calls out her name; he's still in love with her and he sees her face everywhere. >> Suggestion credit : Michelle - Anaheim, CA
  • According to the liner notes in Journey's compilation Time3 , during the band's three-month vacation following the "Escape" tours, their keyboard player Jonathan Cain listened to a lot of Beatles records. He played the chords for this song on the piano in his front room one afternoon for lead singer Steve Perry. "He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play," Cain said. Eventually released as the fourth single off Frontiers , it is one of Perry's personal favorites.
  • In his Songfacts interview, Jonathan Cain talked about what inspired this song. "I had a girlfriend when I was a teenager and somebody had called backstage to one of the shows and said, 'Virginia still talks about you and your relationship.' It was just one of those offhanded comments. I looked at her and just said, 'Send her my love.' I walked out, and it hit me: 'Wait a minute, that's a song!' I went home and I called Steve Perry up and I said I came up with this idea, and we wrote it on the spot. A lot of this stuff we wrote was just on the spot. Very, very spontaneous. We kind of wrote with an urgency because we didn't have a lot of time together. The road was hard enough. When we did write, we wrote very intense. All the lyrics were, like, within hours. We didn't mess around."

“Send Her My Love” by Journey

by Amanda London · Published April 18, 2022 · Updated April 18, 2022

On Journey’s “Send Her My Love”, we find the vocalist in his feelings concerning his ex. Apparently, this is not due to him being the victim of a dumping or even particularly expressing a desire to have her back, as such pieces are usually premised. Instead, it’s more like he misses her and has a guilty conscience.

As presented, the two of them parted ways under less-than-ideal circumstances. Obviously, Steve did not want her to go. But in the grand scheme of things, Steve comes off as one of those types of individuals who felt that his girl was too good for him. And he was also confident that as time progressed, “broken hearts can always mend”. So all things considered, it would appear that, if anything, he cut her off.

But alas, the aforementioned philosophy pertaining to broken hearts has not proven true in his case, as the vocalist remains ‘haunted’ by what he did to his ex. So all of those factors combined culminates in him currently ‘sending her his love’.

Journey, "Send Her My Love"

Creation of “Send Her My Love”

According to Jonathan Cain, this song came about after the demise of a real relationship he was in as a teenager. He said he was a teenager when this happened. According to him, not long after breaking up with his girlfriend, one of his associates casually told him that his ex still often talked about him. It was at this point that he casually told this person this: “send her my love”. According to him, moments after saying this, it dawned on him that those words could be used as a song. He contacted Steve Perry and the two of them composed a song on the spot centering around the phrase and its idea.

Thus the composing of “Send Her My Love” is formally credited to the following:

  • Jonathan Cain
  • Steve Perry

The production, on the other hand, is credited to renowned record producers Kevin Elson and Mike Stone.

When was “Send Her My Love” released?

It was released on the 13th of February, 1983 from the album, “Frontiers”. This song happens to be one of four singles released prior to the official release of “Frontiers”.

Did this single chart?

Yes. It charted in the United States. Here, it peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The “Frontiers” Album

“Frontiers” is a 14-tracked album by Journey, recorded in 1982 and released on the 1st of February, 1983. It happens to be the American band’s eighth studio album.

Recording of the album took place at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley,  California.

“Frontiers” was jointly produced by the aforementioned record producers (M. Stone and K. Elson). It was released through Columbia Records, an American record label.

The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart, making it the band’s best performing album in the UK. It was also very successful in Canada. Thus far, the album has gone 6x platinum in the United States and platinum in Canada.

I absolutely love this song. I want to get a rose tattoo with Roses Never Fade written under the 🌹

Personally one of the best (ballards) songs ever made for anyone who let that one get away

“Send Her My Love” was NOT released on February 13, 1983. It was released in September 1983.

This song was the fourth single released from the ‘Frontiers’ album, which was released February 1, 1983.

The first single released was “Separate Ways – January 5, 1983. The second was “Faithfully – April 16, 1983. Third was the single “After the Fall,” released July 1, 1983.

Since “Send Her My Love” was the last single released, there is no way it could have been February 13. Plus, the song made it’s debut listing on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart on September 24, 1983, which notes that it was probably only out for about two to three weeks.

All of these dates were researched. Might need to change your write-up.

YEP, u r 100% correct mate!

Callin’ out her name I’m dreamin’ Reflections of a face I’m seein’ It’s her voice that keeps on haunting me

The chord structure of this classic ballad is relatively simple yet effective, consisting primarily of the I-IV-V progression. This progression (F-Bb-C) is a staple in many popular songs, contributing to the familiarity and comfort we feel when listening to “Send Her My Love.” The use of these chords allows for a sense of stability within the song, providing a backdrop for the rich and emotive storytelling delivered through the lyrics and vocals.

The steady rhythm creates a soothing and captivating atmosphere, which is further enhanced by the subtle yet significant use of syncopation throughout the track. This rhythmic technique adds an extra layer of complexity and intrigue to the piece.

One of the standout features of “Send Her My Love” is the distinctive guitar work. The song’s intro is characterized by a clean, arpeggiated electric guitar riff that sets the tone for the rest of the track. This is accompanied by a lush and atmospheric synth pad, which adds depth and warmth to the sonic landscape. As the song progresses, the guitar takes on a more prominent role, delivering tasteful and melodic solos that perfectly complement the vocal melodies.

The arrangement of the song is expertly crafted, with each instrument and vocal part serving a specific purpose and contributing to the overall emotional impact. The dynamic shifts in the song, particularly during the chorus, serve to heighten the emotional intensity and create a sense of longing and nostalgia that is impossible to ignore.

In conclusion, “Send Her My Love” is a shining example of Journey’s ability to create memorable and emotionally charged music. The combination of the song’s key, chord progression, tempo, and expert arrangement all contribute to its enduring appeal and timeless quality.

Journey – “Send Her My Love” Lyrics Meaning

Photo of author

Joanna holds a BSc in English Literature and uses her expertise in literary analysis to uncover the deeper meaning of her favorite songs.

“Send Her My Love” tells the story of someone who, despite being apart and on the road, can’t shake off the memories of a past lover. The songwriter uses vivid imagery and heartfelt lyrics to express a deep sense of nostalgia and the pain of separation. It’s about the struggle of moving on while still holding onto the memories of what once was. The song reflects on the idea that though physical objects like roses may wither, the emotions and memories tied to a person never fade. It’s a narrative on the enduring nature of love and the bittersweet reality of its impermanence. Written from a place of vulnerability, it’s clear the songwriter penned this track as a way to cope with their own loss and send a message of enduring affection to someone no longer in their life.

Curious about the story behind the lyrics? Keep reading to find out how a song can capture the essence of love, loss, and longing in a few simple verses.

“Send Her My Love” Lyrics Meaning

From the opening lines, “It’s been so long since I’ve seen her face,” we’re immediately drawn into a world of longing and reminiscence. The song’s narrator is caught in a whirlwind of memories, reflecting on the last time he saw his love. This opening sets the stage for a journey through memory, where every line is laden with nostalgia and a yearning for the past.

The mention of a “sad cafe” and the pain of seeing her cry establishes a backdrop of a deep, emotional connection that was hard to let go. It’s not just about the physical separation but the emotional distance that has grown between them. The phrase “I didn’t want to say goodbye” highlights the reluctance to end the relationship, suggesting that circumstances, not a lack of love, pulled them apart.

“Send her my love, memories remain, send her my love, roses never fade, send her my love,” serves as a haunting refrain. It symbolizes sending affection and good wishes from afar, acknowledging that while they may not be together, the feelings and memories they shared are as vivid and beautiful as ever. The comparison of memories to roses that never fade is a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of love, suggesting that true affection remains long after the physical tokens have wilted.

As the song progresses to “The same hotel, the same old room, I’m on the road again,” we’re given insight into the narrator’s life—constantly moving, never settling, which mirrors the transient nature of the relationship. The lines “She needed so much more than I could give, We knew our love could not pretend” speak to the realization that sometimes love isn’t enough to overcome certain realities. Acknowledging their limitations and the maturity to recognize that their love could not change their circumstances adds depth to the narrative.

The song then moves into a more introspective phase with “Callin’ out her name, I’m dreamin’, reflections of a face I’m seein’.” This captures the essence of longing, where the narrator is haunted by his memories and the sound of her voice. It emphasizes how love can linger in our minds and hearts, becoming a ghostly presence in our lives.

“Send Her My Love” explores the complexity of love, loss, and the human condition. It’s a narrative that many can relate to—how we navigate the pain of parting, the art of remembering, and the hope that, in some way, our love finds its way to those we’ve lost.

The Story Behind “Send Her My Love”

Caught in the whirlwind of touring, fame, and the demands of a music career, the song’s essence reflects a universal story of love lost to the sacrifices one makes for their career. The writer’s state of mind during this period was one of reflection and introspection, pondering on the costs of their chosen path and the relationships left behind in pursuit of their dreams.

The song emerges not just as a narrative of personal loss but as a broader commentary on the sacrifices many make in pursuit of their passions. It speaks to the heartache of choosing between love and ambition, and the haunting realization that some decisions, once made, are irrevocable. The songwriter’s vulnerability in expressing their feelings and regrets offers a window into the soul, making “Send Her My Love” a timeless piece that resonates with anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a loved one, not because they wanted to, but because their life’s journey demanded it.

The emotional depth of the song is further enriched by the understanding that it was written during a time when the band was experiencing immense success. Yet, personally, the members were navigating through their own complex web of emotions and relationships. This juxtaposition between public triumph and private turmoil adds a layer of authenticity and relatability to the song.
