Juan Oritz, aka. Johnny O is an artist I’ve been following for some time, after hearing a single from his self titled album on the radio some years ago. Since then, I’ve listened to all of his back catalogue of music, and have become a huge fan. I was super excited to see him in concert, and I’d heard some exciting things about the performances he gives. I must say, I was not at all disappointed, and if anything, he completely exceeded me expectations with the show he put on.

He opened with his famous track Fantasy Girl from the debut album, and got everyone singing and dancing along right from the start by shouting out ‘come on everybody, put your hands in the air’. Of course he’s got an incredible voice, but his dancing was off the scale, I had no idea that he could move the way that he did. He totally commanded the stage from start to finish, and did some incredible dance moves.

He played a great selection of his music, new and old, and even picked someone from the crowd to go up on stage with him when he played Highways of Love, which was an awesome touch to the show.

Lauryn hill on why fugees reunion tour was canceled, low ticket sales, lauryn hill reason why fugees tour was axed.

080824 lauryn hill main getty comp

Lauryn Hill is finally breaking her silence on the surprise cancellation of the North American leg of the Fugees reunion tour -- Turns out, it came down to low ticket sales.

In a social media statement, the singer pointed to skewed, clickbait press headlines about an injury that forced her to reschedule her tour last year ... claiming they created a negative narrative that turned people off from buying tickets.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

As you can tell, Lauryn was seriously pissed off ... explaining her trust and commitment to her art were overshadowed by this frustrating portrayal -- and no one’s more disappointed than she is about not being able to perform.

Lauryn reassured Stateside fans they'll be back in full force in the future ... but made it clear she's still full steam ahead with the UK and Europe shows in Oct.

Fugees Reunited at Roots Picnic

This gave her disappointed fans some much-needed answers -- something they didn't get Wednesday when the late summer and fall dates were abruptly canceled.

Full refunds were issued for the 18-date tour ... which was set to kick off Friday in Tampa and run through mid-September.

Olympics closing ceremony 2024: Everything you need to know, how to watch, start time

After weeks of intense and exciting competition, international athletes are about to say “au revoir” to the 2024 Paris Games.

Unlike the ambitious opening ceremony , the closing ceremony will take a more traditional route. Rather than the open-air venue of the Seine River, the closing ceremony will be held in the 80,000-seat Stade de France.

The stadium has hosted a number of events over the course of the Games, including world-record-breaking track races and a historic first for the American women’s rugby team . Now, the venue will be filled with artists, dancers, acrobats and surprise performers to celebrate the end of this year’s Olympics and look ahead to the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

Here’s what you need to know about the ceremony.

What time does the Olympic closing ceremony start?

The closing ceremony will be held on Sunday. NBC will air a live preshow at 2 p.m. ET, which will include a recap of some of the most unforgettable moments from this year’s Olympics.

The actual ceremony will start at 3 p.m. ET, and an encore telecast will play for U.S. viewers during prime time. The ceremony is expected to last a little over two hours.

A broadcast about the 2028 G ames will air at 10 p.m. ET.

How can you watch?

The ceremony will be available to stream on NBC, Peacock and NBC Olympics. (NBC News shares a parent company with those entities, NBCUniversal.)

Viewers can also watch on their local NBC channel. Full TV listings for the ceremony can be found on the NBC Olympics schedule page .

What happens during the closing ceremony?

Similar to the opening ceremony, many details about the closing ceremony have been kept under wraps.

The Paris 2024 Olympic committee said the closing ceremony will feature “over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers and circus artists.” Artistic director Thomas Jolly, who also planned the opening ceremony, said the theme is “Records.”

Viewers can expect the usual parade of athletes, a display of the participating nations’ flags and the lowering of the Olympic flag. A portion of the closing ceremony is dedicated to the host city handover from Paris to Los Angeles, in which Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will give the Olympic flag to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

Some final medals are often handed out during the closing ceremony. The Olympic flame is extinguished.

The flame for the Paralympic Games, which take place Aug. 28-Sept. 8, “will be lit shortly after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Stoke Mandeville, the historic birthplace of Paralympic sport,” according to the Olympics website . From Aug. 25 to Aug. 28, about 1,000 forerunners will carry the Paralympic flame to 50 cities throughout France as part of the the Paris 2024 Paralympic torch relay, the website states.

Who are the ceremony hosts? Who is performing?

NBC’s Mike Tirico will return as a host alongside late night host Jimmy Fallon. They will be joined by sports commentator Terry Gannon and former Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, all of whom previously served as hosts during the PyeongChang, Tokyo and Beijing Games.

The ceremony will feature prominent performers representing California, a nod to the next host city. Rapper Snoop Dogg — who has become a fixture of this year’s Games — will play a role in the handover segment. R&B artist H.E.R. will perform the U.S. national anthem at the ceremony.

The full slate of performers remains unconfirmed.

However, there has been speculation that Los Angeles natives Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be a part of the event. Meanwhile, French bands Phoenix and Air are expected to perform, according to a Variety interview with ceremonies director Thierry Reboul.

Actor Tom Cruise, who attended various events at the Games and is currently filming “Mission: Impossible 8” in Europe, is also rumored to be part of the closing celebration.

Who are the flag bearers for Team USA?

Swimmer Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead will be the flag bearers during the closing ceremony.

Ledecky is the most decorated female Olympian of all time, snagging her 14th medal after the 800-meter freestyle on Aug. 3. She won a gold medal in the event, securing her ninth gold overall.

Mead won a gold medal alongside teammates Liam Corrigan, Michael Grady and Justin Best in the men’s four rowing event. It was the first time since 1960 that Team USA won the event.

Who is Phoenix? What to know about the French band that performed at the Olympics Closing Ceremony

By nbc chicago staff • published august 11, 2024 • updated on august 11, 2024 at 5:24 pm.

The 2024 Paris Olympics have officially come and gone, with the Games closing at Stade de France on Sunday in a Closing Ceremony that showcased both French culture and the strength of the Olympic Games.

The ceremony was an epic cross between the talent of Paris and the talent of Los Angeles, with plenty of foreshadowing towards the 2028 Summer Olympics highlighted by performances from Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

Among the French performers at the event was Phoenix, an indie pop band based out of Versailles that has also found modest success in the United States.

Founded in 1995, Phoenix released their first album in 2000 but didn't find success in the United States until the end of the decade.

Releasing "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" in 2009, the album charted at No. 37 on the Billboard 200, headlined by hits Lisztomania and 1901, both of which were performed during Sunday's Closing Ceremony.

Both of the aforementioned singles also charted in the top five of the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in 2009 and are certified Platinum.

Phoenix's most recent album, "Alpha Zulu," was released in November 2022.

Moscow Never Sleeps – Interview with Irish Director Johnny O’Reilly

Johnny O’Reilly is the Irish director behind the new Russian language film ‘Moscow Never Sleeps’. Having studied Russian and Classics and Trinity College, O’Reilly Worked as a journalist in Russia and Ireland before starting out as a filmmaker in 1996.

What was the attraction for an Irish director to make a Russian film set in Moscow?

Moscow’s a fantastic city, full of excitement, dynamism and contrast. It’s the biggest city in Europe and most people know nothing about it. With its hulking Soviet blocks, massive gridlocked avenues and beautiful parks, the place is stunning. However, it’s the people who are the biggest attraction for me. There’s a lot of cruelty and suffering in the lives of Russians. But there’s also a lot of soul.

How did you approach the Irish Film Board with your Russian story?

I went through the standard application procedure for any Irish film and received support from them throughout the whole process. Their financial support amounted to only about 10% of the budget, but their moral and logistical support was hugely important. It’s a film set in Russia, but all the main creative elements were Irish and all post-production took place in Ireland, so it easily fit their remit.

The film was beautifully shot, bringing Moscow to life in many different aspects. Did the two of you make a conscious choice to avoid showing picture-postcard Moscow?

Yes, we did. The film itself is an attempt to subvert Western stereotypes about Russian people by showing them in all their natural complexities, so I felt that we had to get away from iconic imagery that reinforced those stereotypes. Besides, everyone around the world knows Red Square and the Kremlin, but most Muscovites pass by them without a second glance.

What’s the reaction to the film been like from Russian critics and audiences?

The reaction was amazing. Many people loved it, but there was a minority who resented the depiction of Russians in the film. Mainstream opinion in the Russian media is currently skewed in support of a myopic government cultural policy which advocates nationalism and the glorification of Russian culture. So, the idea of a foreigner making a film about Russian that did not subscribe to this considered to be a provocation by some media commentators. The Liberals tended to support the film but the nationalists thought it was an attack on the Russian soul. And I was just delighted to be part of the conversation.

What would you like Irish audiences to take from the film? Do you see parallels with modern Dublin city life too? Moscow and Dublin are very different cities, but there are parallels to the extent that all people essentially share the same fundamental hopes, dreams and fears. I want Irish audiences to sympathize with the characters in the film and to recognize themselves in them. While the setting of the film is specific, the stories are universal and I hope that they will engage and resonate with Irish audiences.

Film Review: ‘Moscow Never Sleeps’

Irishman Johnny O’Reilly directs a Russian-language multi-stranded portrait of modern Moscow as we’ve seldom seen it.

‘Moscow Never Sleeps’ Review: Slice-of-Life Drama Stays on Surface

There may well be a whole section of the Muscovite elite that feels like punching the air, or perhaps clinking champagne glasses, in triumph at the end of Johnny O’Reilly’s “Moscow Never Sleeps,” a fleet-footed skitter of loosely interconnected storylines unfolding across the Russian capital over the course of one day. It’s not often, after all, that we get such a fresh-faced look at a city that foreign art house and festival devotees know better from the laceratingly critical work of brilliant doom-meister Andrey Zvyagintsev, among others. But with something of the zeal of the convert, Dubliner O’Reilly, who lived in Moscow for a decade, presents his low-cal-Altman stories of life, love, death and catharsis against a backdrop that gleams with modernity. Even when the location is a run-down, poky apartment full of old-lady tchotchkes and clashing-print furniture covers, Fëdor Lyass’ crisp, sleek photography confers a high-def elegance on the frame. But this glittery, helicopter vision of Moscow comes at some expense: The various story currents move swiftly but don’t run particularly deep, so the film works better as a kind of best-foot-forward overview of modern urban Russia — “Moscow, I Love You” — than it does as a multi-stranded human drama.

Related Stories

Why social video is a rival for linear tv ad dollars, 'the bachelor': grant ellis named season 29's leading man after exit from jenn tran's season.

O’Reilly also wrote the screenplay for the film, which is his third directorial outing after collective filmmaking experiment “Co/Ma” and Siberia-set thriller “The Weather Station.” Within it he is clearly at pains to present a slice of life that is as cross-sectional as possible. This leads to incidental rather than particularly insightful connections — the unlikely heroes of one storyline are the swiftly dispatched villains of another — but then, perhaps the social stratification of Moscow is such that the upper echelons would seldom find reason to commingle with the lower without some stroke of coincidence or fate intervening. In any case, the film’s virtues are its economy and the breadth of its ensemble, meaning we never spend enough time with any one set of people to get impatient with them, nor even to worry that they are archetypes rather than flesh-and-blood characters.

Popular on Variety

Set during the 24 hours of Moscow’s City Day celebrations, the film’s various strands are collected around two families, and each will experience a death before the day is through. The powerful class is represented by Anton (Alexey Serebryakov, the craggy star of Zvyagintsev’s “Leviathan”), a wealthy businessman being outmaneuvered on a development deal, who is married to trophy wife and aspiring pop singer Katya (Evgenia Brik). Katya, however is being stalked by her ex-lover Ilya (Oleg Dolin) who is the son of well-known celebrity comedian Valery (Yuri Stoyanov), who wakes up in the film’s opening scene in a gleaming hospital he mistakes for the afterlife. Valery, who has had a wife and a mistress on the go for many years, is given only a few weeks to live and resolves to spend at least some of them drinking. Having given his nurses the slip, however, he is immediately spotted by local chancer Arto (Rustam Akhmadeyev) and his gang, who decide to kidnap the TV personality for kicks.

The second, lower-status family is that of aging, practically mute grandmother Vera (Tamara Spiricheva), who is being placed in a nursing home by her remorseful grandson and rather less caring son Vladimir (Mikhail Efremov). Vladimir has his own troubles at home: His pretty, sexually provocative teenage daughter, Kcenia (Lubov Aksenova), and his more withdrawn stepdaughter, Lera (Anastasia Shalonko), do not get on (Lera is pining for her biological father). When forced to go out together that night, the two girls end up in the same club as Arto, and thus the tenuous link between the two spheres is established.

“Moscow Never Sleeps” is engaging, but there are only a few occasions when it feels genuinely inspired. A slow-mo montage set to a melodic piano motif within Roman Litvnov’s pleasant score comes closest to the kind of choral effect achieved in O’Reilly’s obvious touch point, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia.” And some of the vignettes brush against challenging questions of how traditional Russian values of familial duty and loyalty can possibly synthesize with the demands of the modern urban lifestyle. But refreshing as it is to see a vision of Moscow so unusually unencumbered by social critique or political allegory, mostly the absence of that subtext gives “Moscow Never Sleeps” its brittle, surface-level feel.

“New York is overrated,” Ilya tells Katya at one point. “You think Moscow is so much better?” replies Katya. “Yes” is the simple reply, and it sounds like the film’s manifesto: Moscow deserves to be considered alongside the great cities of the world in terms of cosmopolitan sophistication. Couched in fine performances and slick filmmaking, the film just about persuades, but with a city, rather than any of its inhabitants, the star of the show here, there’s little human resonance. The vast wides of sparkling nighttime streets pulsating with traffic under skies bursting with fireworks are impressive but also prove the impersonal truth that while hearts within might be breaking — or stopping altogether —  life in the impervious city goes on.

Sophia Cowley is a young writer, yogi, feminist and film…

On Friday June 9,  Moscow Never Sleeps hit New York theaters. Only time will tell how the film will be received, given America’s current political climate. The timing could not be more pertinent: former FBI director, James Comey , testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday , about his private conversations with President Trump . Comey , who leaked memos of his conversations in the hopes of instigating an investigation into Trump ’s ties to Russia, is quoted as saying, “I was fired because of the Russia investigation.”

In this age of distrust and political speculation, sometimes we need to turn to film to set the record straight. If nothing else, movies like Moscow Never Sleeps allow us to step behind the red curtain and see for ourselves what another culture has in store.

The film follows five individuals whose vibrant lives in Moscow intertwine on one fateful day: Moscow City Day. The characters include: an entrepreneur in financial trouble, a teenage girl in search of her father, a terminally ill comedian, a singer caught between two men, and a young man caring for his aging grandmother.

"Moscow Is A Prison... But We Love It." An Interview With Johnny O'Reilly, Director Of MOSCOW NEVER SLEEPS

Moscow Never Sleeps opens with sweeping shots of the city, eventually transporting us into the hospital in the opening scene. Each scene feels like being swept up alongside the characters; I felt myself cringing when a group of bumbling imbeciles kidnapped Valeriy, the ailing comedian. And I wanted Vera, the teenage girl, to find her way out of that noxious nightclub. I could literally feel those men’s grimy hands on her skin.

In a separate twist of fate, I got in contact with the publicist of Moscow Never Sleeps , who passed along the following questions to Johnny O’Reilly. Below are Johnny’s answers via email.

Interview With Johnny O’Reilly

Sophia Cowley For Film Inquiry: Before Moscow Never Sleeps , you wrote and directed the thriller, The Weather Station . How did you make the move from thriller/mystery to drama?

Johnny O’Reilly :   I like both genres. My short films were mostly dramas. All characters and stories have an emotional structure and integrity. I rarely ever think about genre when I’m writing stories. Of course, they become categorized as such only once they’re completed. Genre is a useful shorthand pigeonhole with which to describe a film, but I don’t have a personal preference for one genre over another.

"Moscow Is A Prison... But We Love It." An Interview With Johnny O'Reilly, Director Of MOSCOW NEVER SLEEPS

What inspired the five interwoven narratives? Tell us a bit about your writing process.

Johnny O’Reilly :   I’m a curious person by nature. When I meet people, I tend to want to find out about their lives and personal histories. Russian people live much more extraordinary lives than we do in the West. They need to fight harder in order to survive. There’s more cruelty and compassion there. The country is a well of inspiration for any writer. I started off with a few characters and half ideas gleaned from stories and people I knew in the real world. Once I started writing, the stories developed on their own, guided by my imagination.

Who or what are you greatest influences?

Johnny O’Reilly :   Truth is always stranger than fiction. I’m inspired by real life, by stories I come across about real people and things that I read about in newspapers and books. The writers who have influenced me the most are Tolstoy and Chekhov . Among my favourite filmmakers are Orson Welles , Ingmar Bergman , Mike Nichols ,  Pavel Pavelowsky , Andrey Zvyagintsev .

"Moscow Is A Prison... But We Love It." An Interview With Johnny O'Reilly, Director Of MOSCOW NEVER SLEEPS

Throughout the film, there seem to be recurring themes of hyper masculinity and the crossing of personal boundaries. (The girls are literally pushing two guys off of themselves in one scene.) Can you talk a bit about where these ghastly male characters came from?

Johnny O’Reilly :   Russia is a very traditional society. This is particularly true in relationships between men and women. It’s also quite a lawless country. Single mothers for example, have very little recourse in law to obligate men for alimony payments. Rape charges are rarely ever successfully prosecuted. Because of this and many other discriminatory practices, women in Russia are very vulnerable. This means that they have to be very strong to survive. This is reflected in the film. The plight of the 16-year-old Lera, the granny and the abused middle-aged wife in the film reflect both the vulnerabilities and the strength of Russian women.

This film features some pretty beautiful, well-choreographed shots. How did you find funding for Moscow Never Sleeps ? What about distribution?

Johnny O’Reilly : Funding for MNS was a hybrid of European co-production finance and the ancient Russian traditions of patronage. 50% came from Irish and European government subsidies and the other 50% from private Russian financing. Because of some of the film’s provocative subject matter, the Russian Ministry of Culture attempted to suppress the film. We struggled to secure a big Russian distributor but in the end, we managed to release the film on 500 prints with a small indie distributor and received rave reviews in the Russian media.

What are your concerns—if any—about Americans’ reaction to the film?

Johnny O’Reilly : I’m more concerned about reach rather than reaction. It’s hard to grab the attention of a wide audience in the US with a foreign language film. Given the current geo-political dramas, however, we believe there’s a big appetite for a film that shows life behind the curtain in Russia and that now is a good time to release the film.

'Moscow Never Sleeps' Review

You’ll be booking that dream vacation to Moscow after watching Johnny O’Reilly’s drama depicting the intertwined lives of several denizens of the Russian city. Clearly influenced by the likes of Robert Altman and Paul Thomas Anderson, Moscow Never Sleeps provides a glamorous portrait of its setting courtesy of its non-Russian director, who has clearly taken a shine to it after living there for more than a decade. Although the film’s overstuffed, overpopulated storyline proves only sporadically interesting, it’s notable for at least providing an alternative view of a city more commonly associated with wintry gloom, corruption and heavy drinking. Not that the film doesn’t include at least two of those elements.

The one not showcased is bleak weather, as the story takes place on Moscow’s annual local holiday City Day, held in September. The story’s numerous characters include: Anton ( Alexey Serebryakov , who starred in Leviathan , a far less upbeat film about Moscow), a wealthy businessman who finds his empire threatened by government bureaucrats who want their piece of the pie; his trophy wife Katya ( Evgenia Brik ), a young pop singer whose career he’s working to advance; Katya’s ex-lover Ilya ( Oleg Dolin ), who’s embarked on a relentless campaign to get her back; and Ilya’s father Valery (Yuri Stoyanov ), a famous actor/comedian who juggles a wife and girlfriend and learns he only has a few weeks to live.

The Bottom Line More broad than deep.

That list doesn’t even include the feuding teenage stepsisters of a lower-class family and the young man agonizing over his decision to put his elderly grandmother in a nursing home. The jumble of storylines inevitably results in narrative confusion, and the relationships linking them, some of which are only revealed late in the proceedings, don’t resonate strongly. And some plot developments — such as when Valery , after fleeing the hospital, gets kidnapped by a gang of teenage louts who claims to be his “fans” — just feel silly.

Still, there’s no denying the filmmaker’s passion for his titular setting, which he presents as a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city filled with gorgeous architecture, a vibrant night life and crowded streets. O’Reilly doesn’t ignore the darker aspects of the Russian capital and the nation’s culture, as illustrated by Valery’s sardonic comment after waking up in the hospital and being informed he’s still very much alive. Or when the government apparatchiks threatening Anton’s business tell him, “You don’t like it, go live in London.”

Although the performances by the large ensemble wildly vary in quality, there are standout turns by Stoyanov , who captures both the world-weariness and vulgar humor of the burnt-out Valery , and Serebryakov , who is intensely commanding as the businessman embroiled in a fight with the system that he almost certainly can’t win. Their characters provide the high points of this ambitious but uneven portrait of a modern Russia still mired in Soviet-era problems.
