READ for TIPS INCLUDED - Fun and educational tour. Great family thing to do. Driver was engaging funny knowledgeable about the history and houses. Kid friendly, family oriented activity. The company use horses they have rescued & save from abuse or from situation where they'll be sold for processing. So you're supporting a horse rescue organization as well. TIPS: -It is $16 per adult CASH only or VENMO as of 12/2023. Pay driver at the end of the tour. If you grab a brochure/flyer advertisement at the hotels it has a $1 off per Adult fare COUPON. Be sure to TIP the driver (before the discount) & the company so they can save more horses. -Get there 15mins before posted return time because there's a seating capacity 20-25 people. -When the horses get back they need a 15min break so you have to wait for that, but be sure to get onboard & pick your seat while waiting out the 15mins after the horses get back and wait on the carriage. Driver does take lunch so be aware of that (not sure when that is 12pm or 1pm) -Really the tours start 15mins after what the clock sign says -Tour is about 1/2hr. There's only one carriage. There are blankets if it's cold that day as the trolly/carriage is open air. -You can get ice cream /chocolate/candy at Kilwins while waiting

We've been taking these tours for almost 20 years. They're always super educational telling the story of Wilmington. But the best part of these tours is simply that this company is SAVING HORSES from being sold to processors. So many horses meet a horribly unfortunate fate and this company has found a really great way of saving them. They're have many horses and they only work a few hours a day for about a week and then they spend the rest of their time in a pasture enjoying grazing and a lazy comfortable life. Many people don't know this about them and you'll often hear the carriage man talking about the rescue mission of these horses. It's not free but it is 100% worth it.

I have taken this tour twice. Why twice Tim? The second time we had some relatives in town and their kids were really wanting to take the tour. Summary - It's an okay tour. 30 minutes. - Cash only, which blows in Tim's book - Okay overview of the history of Wilmington - Jokes are lame, but the driver is very engaging and tries to entertain the customers - At the time of this review $12 for adults, cheaper for kids - You pay when the tour is over - The tour highlights a few of the mansions along the way It's worth taking once.

This was my second trip to Wilmington. I wanted to share the carriage ride experience with my boyfriend. We tried going on a Thursday and the carriage ride hours changed and it wasn't reflected in Facebook or the website. (Changed from start time at 10 am to 6 pm and we arrived at 3 pm). We drove an hour and were disappointed. We then returned on a Saturday and didn't have trouble going on a ride. We rode with the owner that was friendly and shared stories about how the horses were rescues and the rides kept them active and $$ went toward their care. I didn't time the ride. But it was nice riding through the side streets and listening to stories. It was funny and silly. Cost was $14/person. I'd recommend updating Facebook or website with changes/updates to help keep people informed.

Photo of Jennifer L.

Got there a minute too late but the sign said they would be back in 22 minutes so we thought it was worth the wait. When they did get back 25 minutes later the driver said she was going for dinner and it would be at least another 30 minutes. It's also cash only, no reservations, the horses looked exhausted so we were not going to wait.

Photo of Hunter G.

Take a trip back in time! The tour is fun AND educational! It's perfect for a family or for a date night activity. The guide is very friendly and knowledgeable. Also, I applaud them for their efforts to save endangered horses. They're the only carriage company in the US that uses strictly rescues horses.

Photo of Bev M.

We were so excited to take the tour. Several of us love horses and we all love history! The driver said that the tour was "donation" based. I asked him just to make sure. He said "yes" we could make a donation of our choice at the end. We enjoyed the tour and a put a $20 in my pocket for my contribution to give at the end of the ride. It was informative and enjoyable - until the end! Driver announces that there is $12 a head charge. Total SCAM!!! Ruined what up until then had been a great experience. The kind of trick I except in a 3rd world country!! To make it worse two of our group had zero cash and were so embarrassed! Bad reflection on an otherwise great visit!

Photo of Stephanie M.

I don't recommend this company at all. As a customer I felt I was lied to about the type of ride I received. I also felt bad for these horses and it appeared they were overworked.

Photo of Rebecca C.

Definitely a highlight of a trip to Wilmington. What seemed like it could be cheesy, was not at all. For $12, you get a long ride around town showing many side streets that one wouldn't normally see when on foot in Wilmington, and the informative guide gave the history of Wilmington and all that's there to see in a nutshell. What's more is that the horses used for this ride along the riverfront and passing by numerous historical mansions, are treated extremely well before and during the ride, and are rescued horses, saved by an otherwise nightmarish life/death.

Photo of Denise M.

This was a horrible carriage ride.. We too felt that we where lied to. Would NoT recommend this to anyone. This carriage ride lasted less then 30 minutes ... I'm a local and bring my family and friends to Wilmington for its history. Never again. My friend paid for my husband and I to take this carriage ride but, we did not know that at the time and my husband paid the carriage drivers too.. after learning that my friend had already paid we asked her for the extra money back as she was over paid , she then said she did not have it, another lie as she had a carriage full of people. She refused to give us our $24.00 plus tip back this was a total rip off.. and turned out to be a total disappointment

Horse-drawn carriage tour of historic downtown wilmington, north carolina.

horse tour wilmington nc

By Meg Brunson

One of my favorite things to do when visiting a new place is to take a guided tour! As the primary driver, I rarely get to sit back and just enjoy the surroundings, and I love hearing all the stories behind the buildings and homes in a new city. This is the first time we've taken a horsedrawn carriage tour, and we were all so excited to meet the horses and spend some time with them while learning about Wilmington!

One of the first things we learned was that the horses used by the horsedrawn carriage rides in Wilmington are all rescues! They are horses owned by Springbrook Farms Inc. and they rescue the large Percheron draft horses from the auction block. Many of these horses were originally work horses on Amish farms, and for one reason or another the horses were not ideal for the Amish, so they are sent to auction. But at auction, they are typically the last to sell, since their size is much larger than a typical riding horse. So, Springbrook Farms rescues as many of those horses as possible and then provides them with care and purpose (work they can do)!

horse tour wilmington nc

There are multiple tour routes that the carriage tour guides may take you on, and they will let you know which tour you took, so that if you want to return for another tour, you can request a different route. We went on tour route #1 and loved seeing a variety of the antabellum style houses and learning little bits of history and fun stories about the different buildings and homes.

After the tour, we loved checking out a bunch of the local shops. Nonnie Doodle is an adorable candy shop, started by 2 kids with a passion for sweets! With their parent's help they've opened 2 locations in the Wilmington area - and we love supporting kidpreneurs! We also loved the Black Cat Shoppe - it had a lot of random and quirky stuff to look at!

You really can't visit Wilmington without checking out the historic downtown area - and this horsedrawn carriage ride is the perfect way to slow down and take in all the sights!

Tips for a Terrific Experience

  • Parking - We parked at a meter with a 2-hour limit, and at the time of our visit it was $1.50/hour (not bad!). The machines took credit cards, which is great because I rarely carry cash! As we were walking around we did notice some public parking lots that were free for the first 90 minutes... but there were a couple blocks away from the tour, and with the on-street parking we were super close.
  • Back sides - for my kids it was no problem... but the seats were a little hard for Dad and I... if you have those bleacher seat cushions, I'd bring them!  If not, know it's a relatively quick ride, and worth a little bit of a sore booty!
  • After the ride - Definitely plan some time to walk around the historic downtown area and/or the riverwalk. It's a beautiful area with lots of adorable shops and restaurants. The views at the river are breathtaking, especially at sunset!

This plantation was once the home of Fort Randall, a confederate fort from 1861 to 1863. During the War of the States, the US-North Atlantic Squadron was very active in this area. The remains of a cannonball still lies in place on the Battery Hill beside Fort Randall. The open fields at the entrance to our stables were originally cleared by the 9000 confederate soldiers, as the tree line along the Intracoastal Waterway served as a barrier from coming enemy ships. The property was once home to Billy the Kid, and even Blackbeard was said to have used our island as a safe haven.

Weekend plans? Stop by the Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society tour

horse tour wilmington nc

So, you think you can’t grow roses in the Wilmington area? Well think again! The Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society is a nonprofit educational organization that promotes the culture and appreciation of the rose - America's national flower.

The Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society has been in existence for 21 years. They host a monthly meeting to help you learn the basics of growing roses in our area. Two-hour meetings consist of what to do each month in your rose garden. Meeting topics include soil preparation, fertilizing, spraying for fungus or insects, watering and timely pruning, tools needed and types of roses. Additionally, meetings often have guest speakers offering power point presentations and hands on activities.

The Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society is an affiliate of the American Rose Society. Some members of the society have attained the status of Consulting Rosarian. The society supports two local charities each year. They are the New Hanover County Ability Garden and Cape Fear Community College Horticulture Science Program.

The society will host its 21st annual rose tour this Saturday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (information and gardens locations are listed at https://www.wcfrs.org/rose-tour.html ). Eight gardens are available this year to enjoy. The garden owners will be present to answer any questions. The tour is free to the public. Come and enjoy.

So, stop by one of our monthly meetings and learn about roses. All information about Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society is located at www.wcfrs.org .

Stop and smell the roses!

Debbie Caulder is the treasurer for the Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society.

Historic District Horse Drawn Wagon Tour Fun, Maybe Helps Horses

Nice tour of the historic area with a friendly driver who clearly loves Wilmington. Boarded at the end of Market street, at the waterfront. Very fun and great experience for kids to feel what it must have been like when horses were the only conveyance, but much of the narration was about the redevelopment of the Wilmington waterfront area, how much the houses are worth, which movie is filming in town yada yada. Would much have preferred that the driver talk about the area's Civil and Revolutionary War history, the specific history of each beautiful home we passed etc. Really felt, at points, like the driver was giving a Chamber of Commerce spiel for prospective new investors, or was getting kick-backs to advertise each business we passed. All can be forgiven, since he clearly was a fan of the town and ecstatic about the redeveloped waterfront, but given the wealth of history in the area, I wish the narration had been a bit more educational. Horses come from Springbrook Farms, and according to their website, they use rescued horses. Didn't know this until after the tour, so could not inquire, but if it is true, this is a huge plus for me as regards this attraction, as I do like my tourist dollars supporting that endeavor. (The horses used on our tour appeared well cared-for, and were an appropriate size/strength for the work they were being asked to perform, btw). Check out their website at www.horsedrawntours.com.
