Cross Country Healthcare Opportunities

Cross Country Healthcare has it all when it comes to nursing positions:

  • Travel nursing Contracts
  • Local nursing Contracts
  • Per Diem nursing positions
  • Permanent nursing Positions

If you're researching Cross Country Healthcare, you may find references to Cross Country TravCoprs, MedStaff, and Medical Staffing Network. These three brands were merged into Cross Country Nurses, now part of the Cross Country Healthcare brand. This move was made to simplify the search process and make their team of national recruiters more accessible to travel nurses, no matter where you're located.

I worked with Cross Country through Medical Staffing Network, which focuses on per-diem local contract nursing. The application process was archaic at the time, and looking up contracted positions was only possible after speaking to a recruiter.

Everything has appeared to change since 2018—and for the better. While I can't speak to their current application process, it's evident that Cross Country has upgraded its website and job search process to a user-friendly digitized format. You can even browse the nursing contracts available, including pay rates.

  • Short-term disability coverage
  • Accidental insurance

Retirement investment is also possible with Cross Country Healthcare's 401(K) plan, which is available through fidelity. The company even offers free financial empowerment and education courses for its nurses and healthcare professionals.

Cross Country Healthcare may also include company matching with the 401(K) plan. However, it is unclear if this applies to only per-diem nurses working with their CCMSN (Cross Country Medical Staffing Network) division or to travel nurses as well.

You can contact Cross Country Healthcare for more information if you have specific questions.

Is Cross Country a Good Travel Nurse Agency?

Original Allnurses Post

Quote Q : I'm really considering travel nursing within the next few months. I know the economy is slow and with my experience, it may not even possible to get a job (I have 20months NICU exp but I'm open to going wherever). I am talking with a few companies and I think I like Cross Country, but I really do not like the recruiter I am working with/talking to. Does anyone have a recruiter with this company that they would recommend via PM? I do think that this is the right company for me, being Canadian and all but I really want a better recruiter. A : Dear Poster, I recommend you contact your Cross Country Healthcare recruiter and request to speak with their manager.  When you talk with the manager, you can express your concerns and your passion to work with their company. The manager will then be able to set you up with a recruiter that better suits you and your needs. Personalities sometimes clash, and Cross Country should be happy and willing to get you with someone you can thrive with.  When I worked with CCMSN in 2018, I had a similar experience. After notifying my recruiter and asking to speak with his manager, the manager made sure I no longer needed to work with that recruiter. After that the remainder of my time with them was much improved.

Worked for CCTC for a long time. Will NEVER again. Don't accept one of their "exclusive contracts" where they do the interview and you don't speak to anyone at the hospital before traveling a thousand miles. PM me for additional info if you like.

In contrast, I've been with them for 14 years and am still satisfied. Just shows that we all have different requirements and you have to find the company that suits yours. I do agree with the above that I would not take a contract without speaking to the hospital. Always remember that YOU are interviewing the facility to see if they suit you as well as the other way around.

I really don't like to put anyone's name and info out on the general internet without permission, but can give you my recruiter's name if you would like to pm me.

Thanks for the responses! I definitely appreciate it. I do want to go with them because they are one of the bigger companies without being the AMN (which i will definitely not do). And most of the reviews i have seen are positive (for the most part!).

You may PM me. I am with Cross Country TravCore. No problems, great recruiter, same one since 2001.

I too have been thinking about travel nursing with Cross Country...I've never done traveling before...a bit skeptical but at the same time excited. From all my research I am learning the biggest single determinant in a successful and/or good travel experience boils down to the recruiter. I have already initiated correspondence and application with Cross Country...I found this thread helpful. So thanks.

Also, I'm nervous about giving up a salaried position for an unknown income...and some people are posting that there aren't alot of assignments out there and that this isn't a good time for traveling (referring to the economy) ...but when I check some of the job postings, such as Cross Country, I see plenty...can anyone speak to this....

Be very careful when you are looking at the openings companies put on their websites. Many use "generic" openings because "things change from minute to minute" and that just feels like bait and switch to me. Many times by the time you fill all the paperwork out for the company, it will take several days and they may not have any openings there anymore. If you want to go to a specific state or area, pick a bigger company who will have more choices. If you don't care where you go, just want to go for the fun of it, pick a smaller company that will have much better pay and benefits but will have fewer choices in where to send you.

If you want to go to orlando in the Winter, pick cross country they can probably get you there. If you just want to go to florida in the Winter, consdier a smaller company. They may send you to a different city but it will still be florida and it may not have been someplace you would have considered before. Consider making a weekend of orlando instead of an assignment. It is all in what you want more, location or benefits, choices of locations or smaller company with better benefits. Also, don't think you have to stay with one company just because they found your first job for you, try different companies. When you find a good fit of what you want, then stay with them. Otherwise, it is for you to decide that is one of the benefits in being a traveler!

Am re-entering the travel nursing field and am researching different companies. I am currently talking with a recruiter at CrossCountry (have traveled for them in the past without any problems) but feel I am getting a "lowball" offer to work in NYC. I have also applied PHP, Fastaff and Valley. Fastaff has posted some great pay rates, but availability of assignments for med-surg seems slim. Applied to PHP and Valley as they have been listed as some of the best on Highway Hypodermics. What is the going rate for NYC positions (hourly)? Has anybody here had any experience with PHP or Valley? Would like to know how they truly rate in a "real" traveler's eyes!

P.S. I have 12 yrs experience as an RN : Med-Surg/Ortho-Neuro-Trauma/Step-Down/ICU/OR

I worked with Dijana (pronounced Deana) in 1994 and then again 2006-2009 and had great experiences with her both times. Things have changed in the past 20 years... Hospitals expect you to be nearly perfect and very flexible... Love CCTC and ready to try them again!!!!

NURSE THEORY

What is Cross Country Travel Nursing?

Cross-country travel nursing allows registered nurses to travel throughout the U.S. to various healthcare facilities.

Accordingly, it enables them to assist short-staffed hospitals and healthcare institutions temporarily.

These specialists help healthcare facilities provide adequate patient care by easing the labor burdens of the current nurses.

Without travel nursing, many healthcare facilities would have difficulty filling essential positions without travel nurses.

Short-staffed facilities increase employee burnout due to long hours and insufficient rest and recovery.

It also dramatically diminishes medical care due to employee exhaustion and overwhelming patient capacity.

Travel Nursing Mindset and Preparedness

Registered nurses must be ready to leave at a moment’s notice regarding cross-country travel nursing.

They must also adjust to changing environments and extend time away from home, family, and friends.

Because travel nurses work in different settings, making new friends and meeting new co-workers is essential.

Not everyone prefers cross-country travel nursing, especially those who don’t like constant change.

Nevertheless, travel nursing provides an exciting experience with numerous benefits for those with the right mindset.

Benefits and Perks

Nurses who travel throughout the country are often well compensated for their help.

For instance, healthcare facilities offer various perks and incentives to draw in travel nurses.

It includes travel reimbursement, medical benefits, luxury accommodations, travel stipend, and rental car reimbursement.

They may also offer excellent wages for accepting assignments and permanent positions at the end of the term.

Nurses who make a full-time career travel nursing can travel to multiple states yearly.

It’s a great way to experience the United States, gain career experience and determine the best place to work long-term.

Finally, travel nurses get to set their schedules by picking the assignments they prefer.

It enables them to work around their schedule and take time off between job assignments.

Travel and Accommodations

Travel nurses who work long distances may take an airplane to get to their assignment.

For instance, travel nurses operating in New York can fly to California for a temporary work assignment.

Nevertheless, several options are available for travel nurses who don’t want to fly.

Travel nurses can take a greyhound bus, ride the train or drive to the new destination in their vehicle or a rental car.

Regarding accommodations , travel nurses often stay at a hotel, Airbnb, or rental property.

In this case, the travel agency or the nurse will set up the accommodations through a travel nurse housing website.

Travel nurses may also set up accommodations independently and reive a travel allowance to cover their costs.

Travel Nurse Agencies

Cross-country travel nurses often work with one or more travel nurse agencies.

It enables them to find the best jobs in locations they prefer to work.

In addition, a good travel nurse agency will help travel nurses with other standard necessities.

For instance, they help nurses find housing accommodations and arrange transportation options.

They’ll also negotiate employment terms and conditions and look for the best fit between the employee and the employer.

As a result, all parties benefit from the support of travel nurse agencies.

Background and Experience

Most travel nurse agencies prefer registered nurses with at least 2 – 3 years of hospital/direct patient care experience.

Sometimes, travel companies hire nurses with only one year of nursing experience.

They may also hire LPNs ( licensed practical nurses ) for assignments that require less significant patient care.

Travel nurses must work quickly and effectively to ensure patients receive adequate care.

As a result, hospitals want well-trained nurses with years of experience.

The need for travel nurses will continually increase as nurses retire and the population requires additional medical aid.

Therefore, It’s one of the best careers for nurses willing to travel.

Those who become travel nurses enjoy numerous benefits.

It includes travel tax reimbursement, 401k plan contributions, rental car reimbursement, health insurance packages, luxury housing, and other benefits.

Nevertheless, not all healthcare facilities offer the same benefits and perks.

Some locations offer numerous benefits, while others provide little.

As a result, travel nurses often work with several travel agencies to find the best assignments, locations, and perks.

Regarding the length of the assignment a travel nurse works, most appointments last an average of 1 – 12 months.

With that said, assignment length depends on the particular job a nurse accepts.

Assignments outside the United States usually last 12 months or longer.

Once an assignment is complete, the healthcare facility may offer the travel nurse a permanent position.

It enables the travel nurse to relocate to that hospital and region permanently.

In this case, the institution may offer benefits, bonuses, and perks to incentivize them to relocate.

It includes covering relation experiences, offering a higher starting salary, and temporary housing/rental reimbursement.

Traveling nursing allows nurses to tour the United States or the world and gain new experiences.

As a result, it’s an exciting career for those who don’t mind traveling and meeting people.

Love it or hate it

Travel nursing has benefits and can be an excellent career for adventurous people who love to travel.

However, it isn’t ideal for everyone.

Those who have difficulty leaving home behind may find that cross-country traveling nursing takes too much of an emotional toll.

In this case, working at a hospital or healthcare facility in their hometown or nearby may be the best option.

Nevertheless, travel and local nurses have excellent career opportunities, good job stability, great wages, and incredible medical benefits.

In addition, the job market is very secure for hard-working nurses who take their jobs seriously.

How to Begin Cross-Country Travel Nursing

Aspiring students must pass college prerequisite courses and enter a registered nursing program to become travel nurses .

The nursing program takes 2 – 4 years to complete depending on whether students pursue an ADN or BSN degree.

After that, students must pass the NCLEX-RN (national licensing exam) to earn their registered nurse license.

Most travel nurse agencies want to hire nurses with 2 – 3 years of experience in clinical care.

As a result, obtaining work experience is highly beneficial for landing travel nursing jobs.

Sometimes a travel agency will higher skilled registered nurses with one year of experience so that you can apply earlier.

It’s really up to the healthcare institutions’ policies and hiring practices.

After acquiring enough field experience, you can apply for travel nursing assignments.

Most travel nurses work with several travel nursing agencies to find the best assignments and perks available.

Once you’ve joined an agency and chosen an assignment, the fun begins.

Travel nurses operate in hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the United States.

They also work in other countries in some circumstances.

In the United States, travel nurses work on temporary assignments lasting anywhere from 1 month to 1 year.

Nurses operating outside the United States generally work on long-term assignments lasting one year or longer.

Travel nurses provide services to healthcare facilities requiring help due to a nursing shortage .

By providing hospitals with additional aid, travel nurses keep patient waiting times to a minimum.

They also ensure patients receive the proper medical care they need to recover.

Regarding the healthcare industry, travel nursing is becoming an essential and indispensable component of hospitals throughout the United States.

While it’s not a complete fix to the nursing shortage, it is a big step in the right direction.

It is also excellent for nurses who have always wanted to travel to see the world and make a difference.

For some, travel nursing has become a lifestyle.

This industry offers many benefits aside from travel.

It includes luxury accommodations, a loaner car or rental reimbursement, 401 k contributions, sign-on bonuses, and more.

Stay Near or Go Far? The Benefits of Cross-Country Travel Nursing Jobs

couple_car

By Lee Soren, contributor

For some travel nurses, choosing a location may be as simple as spinning a globe and seeing where your finger lands. For others, deciding where to accept an assignment is something that requires serious consideration.

Choosing a cross-country travel nursing job may seem risky and intimidating, and there are plenty of legitimate reasons to stay close to home, including a familiarity with the region, proximity to friends and family and knowledge of local transportation. But there are also good reasons to get out of your comfort zone and explore the nation.

If you're considering whether to take an assignment close to home or head off on an epic long-distance adventure to a top nursing destination , here are three major benefits of cross-country travel nursing jobs and what they might mean for you.

1. Higher pay rates

If you're willing to travel further on assignment, you'll often enjoy higher pay rates, especially in states where the demand for nurses is high. According to the Department of Health and Human Services , coastal states such as California, New Jersey and South Carolina are projected to experience the most severe nursing shortages in the coming years.

Salaries will likely remain high in these states and others like them, to entice travel nurses into traveling farther to fill desperate staffing needs. Other perks may include signing or completion bonuses. For rapid-response positions, which require nurses to report to work within days, pay rates may be even higher. For this reason, salaries alone may be reason enough to venture farther from home.

2. Exposure to new patient populations

As a nurse, it's vital to be able to work effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds to deliver excellent patient care and ensure the best treatment outcomes possible. Traveling around the country and working in a variety of hospitals can provide you with the opportunity to experience unfamiliar ways of life and discover unique pockets of culture that you might never have encountered otherwise.

Moreover, by interacting with people from different regions of the country, you expose yourself to new patient populations. According to Forbes , encounters with cultural nuances and even language barriers can improve your communication skills by challenging you to be an active listener . These listening skills will serve you well in patient interactions.

In addition to enhancing your communication skills, exposure to new patient populations can make you more sensitive to the diverse care needs of patients from different cultures and backgrounds, which can lead to increased patient satisfaction according to a study published on NCBI .

3. The opportunity to travel

In general, people who travel often enjoy enhanced creativity, improved communication skills and a better ability to adapt to new and different situations. Travel also lets you build great career connections, which can serve you well when applying for future travel jobs or permanent positions.

Sometimes, however, the biggest benefit that comes with taking a cross-country nursing job is the sheer joy of visiting a new place. Because many travel nursing jobs offer benefits such as airfare, complimentary housing and sometimes even stipends for meals and utilities, these positions can give you the luxury of exploring locations that might normally break the bank.

Accepting a cross-country travel nursing job can let you immerse yourself in a new region for weeks or even months at a time, providing a more in-depth experience than you would have on a week-long vacation. By venturing far from home, you'll find yourself opening up to new places, new people and exciting new experiences.

Ultimately, the skills you develop through your travel jobs are skills you'll carry with you throughout your career, and your varied travel experience can make you appealing to potential employers. While accepting positions close to home can feel safe, there are unique benefits to cross-country travel nursing jobs that may make the risk worth the reward. A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
