Boasting one of pop's most beloved voices, Susanna Hoffs was born and raised in Los Angeles with an ever-present soundtrack of '60s music. She loved to sing and play guitar, going on to study dance and art in college. Stirred by punk and new wave, Susanna started her first band with David Roback (Mazzy Star) while at UC Berkeley. Upon returning to L.A., she placed a want ad which led her to Vicki and Debbi Peterson. In December 1980, they met in the garage of Susanna's parents' home and a band was born. Blending ’60s garage rock, lush harmonies, and jangly guitars, the Bangles became a seminal band of the ’80s with a string of hits from three platinum-selling albums. Over the decades since, the Bangles continued to tour and release LPs. In 1991, Susanna released a pop-heavy solo album, When You're a Boy, followed by her eponymous LP, which was met with critical praise. After working together in the Austin Powers films, Susanna and Matthew Sweet released three volumes of their acclaimed Under the Covers series. In 2011, she released Someday, a retro modern solo set that was a stylish homage to the '60s pop that she grew up on. Most recently, she worked with acclaimed producer Peter Asher on her album The Deep End. Susanna has collaborated with Rufus Wainwright, Tom Petty, Chris Martin, Mike Campbell, Jack Antonoff, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Aimee Mann, Andrew Bird, Jon Brion, Maya Rudolph, and many others.
Susanna released her first novel “This Bird Has Flown” in April of 2023. The New York Times called it the “smart, ferocious rock-star redemption romance you didn’t know you needed.” NPR called it “a love story — and a valentine to music.” It was a Los Angeles Times bestseller.

A founding member of the Bangles, a solo artist, and a collaborator, Susanna Hoffs boasts one of pop music's most striking and beloved voices. Born in Los Angeles into a creative family, Susanna grew up in the company of writers, thinkers, painters, and filmmakers with an ever-present soundtrack provided by the Beatles and other artists of the 1960s. As a young girl, she loved to sing and play guitar, going on to study theatre, dance, and art at University of California, Berkeley.
The Bay Area music scene was in full bloom during her college years, and Susanna was stirred by the punk rock and new wave movements. Transformed by seeing the last-ever Sex Pistols show and the Patti Smith Group at Winterland, Susanna started a band with David Roback as a way to express and explore their shared passion for the darkly beautiful aspects of music, theatre, photography, and art. The collaboration — dubbed the Unconscious — recorded “I’ll Keep It with Mine” and “I’ll Be Your Mirror” for the iconic Rainy Day album in 1984 and served as a precursor to Roback's work with the Rain Parade, Opal, and Mazzy Star.
Upon graduating and returning to L.A., Susanna placed an ad in the Recycler which led her to sisters Vicki and Debbi Peterson. On a fateful night in December of 1980, they met in the garage of Susanna's parents' home and it was love at first rehearsal... they were a band. The girls hit the club circuit hard, signing to Columbia Records in 1983. Blending ’60s garage rock, lush harmonies, and jangly guitars, the Bangles became a seminal band of the ’80s and ensured their place in rock and roll history with a string of hits — including “Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “In Your Room,” “Eternal Flame,” and “Hazy Shade of Winter” — from three platinum-selling albums — All Over the Place, A Different Light , and Everything . Over the decades since their heyday, the Bangles have continued to tour and release records (2003's Doll Revolution, 2011's Sweetheart of the Sun , and 2014's Ladies and Gentlemen... the Bangles compilation).
Stepping away from her work with the Bangles, Susanna released two solo albums in the 1990s which featured collaborations with an impressive array of musicians including Jon Brion, Mick Fleetwood, John Entwistle, Jim Keltner, Mark Linkous, David Lowery, and Petra and Rachel Haden. In an effort to capitalize on the Bangles' momentum, Columbia Records put Susanna straight to work on a pop-heavy solo album with 1991's When You're a Boy (produced by David Kahne). Five years later, her eponymous 1996 release (produced by Jack Joseph Puig) brought the singer closer to her musical roots than she'd been in a long time and she was met with critical praise for the effort.
After working together as members of Ming Tea in the Austin Powers film trilogy, Susanna and Matthew Sweet formed Sid 'n Susie, releasing three volumes of their highly acclaimed Under the Covers series, culling tunes from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. The magical blend of their voices, combined with a roughly hewn power-pop sound, has turned the Sid 'n Susie project into a cult favorite, as well as a critics' pick.
In 2011, Susanna stole away to the studio to capitalize on a burst of creative energy sparked by the presence of a new songwriting partner in Andrew Brassell, an indie musician from Nashville. The collaboration resulted in her third solo project, 2012's Someday (produced by Mitchell Froom). Painted with catchy-as-anything melodies using a palette of horns, flutes, and strings, Someday conjured up an era when melody was king, all while remaining ever-fresh and contemporary. The retro modern song cycle served as a stylish homage to the 1960s pop sounds that Susanna grew up loving.
She followed that up in fairly short order with two stripped-down EPs, From Me to You and Some Summer Days in 2012 and 2013, respectively. A couple years later, she collaborated with Jack Antonoff on “I'm Ready to Move On/Wild Heart Reprise” for the Bleachers' Terrible Thrills, Vol 2 LP. Susanna has regularly appeared on film soundtracks, as well, including Bombshell , Meet the Parents , Buffy the Vampire Slayer, A Dog Named Gucci , Red Roses and Petrol , and others.
More recently, Susanna enjoyed the honor of inducting the Zombies into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, singing with Chris Martin on Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince, performing with Tom Petty when he was named MusiCares Person of the Year, and appearing at the 2014 Stagecoach Festival. Being part of Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein's Portlandia Live , Mike Campbell's Merry Minstrel Circus, and a variety of shows at Café Largo in tandem with Aimee Mann, Andrew Bird, Jon Brion, Maya Rudolph, and others, has renewed and inspired her for live performances, and she now looks forward to playing shows in intimate settings where she has the freedom to pull her favorite songs from her entire discography, as well as some choice covers. With special guests stopping by to jam with her, each show is a one-of-a-kind adventure for both her and the audience.

Susanna Hoffs Announces Covers Album The Deep End, Tackles The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb”: Stream
The record also features songs by Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, Squeeze, and Yazoo
The Bangles frontwoman Susanna Hoffs has announced a new album, a collection of covers called The Deep End. The project is out April 7th via Baroque Folk, while the first taste of the LP — a cover of The Rolling Stones’ 1966 track “Under My Thumb” — is available to stream now.
Produced by Peter Asher, The Deep End sees Hoffs tackle classics from the Stones, Squeeze, and Leslie Gore, as well as modern songs by artists like Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Brandy Clark. It arrives at the same time as The Bird Has Flown, the artist’s debut novel. Pre-orders for both the album and the book are ongoing.
While she admits to loving the Stones and “Under My Thumb” — “I’ve listened to that song on repeat since it came out in the mid-’60s,” she recalled in a statement — covering the track presented Hoffs with the opportunity to practice a little gender trouble.
“I had an epiphany when I really thought about what the song is about, and it ignited this idea to do my own spin on it — to change the gender and see how it felt. What if the roles are/were reversed and the boy is under her thumb? It was exhilarating to give it a new spin, to flip it on its head, or on its ass. It’s a sassy, irreverent song, so it was extremely pleasurable to turn the tables.” In addition to a more straightforward cover, Hoffs has also issued a dance remix of the track by producer Oak Felder. Listen to both versions below.
The Deep End marks Hoffs’ fifth solo album, and her second collection of covers. Her last release was 2021’s Bright Lights , which featured songs by Nick Drake, Lou Reed, and, of course, Prince. Revisit our interview with the artist on that record here .

With enduring hits like ‘Eternal Flame’ and ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’ in their arsenal, The Bangles’ career has outlived the 80s and has seen the all-female group’s popularity remain high ever since.
Formed originally when Susanna Hoffs joined the Peterson sisters of Vicki and Debbi to become known as ‘The Bangs’. Their 60’s indebted, jangle sound led the band to fall in with the ‘Paisley Underground’ scene that existed in LA during the early 80s. This helped to build the group’s initial popularity and helped them to sign a deal with Miles Copeland (the brother of Stuart from The Police).
The group’s debut album ‘All Over The Place’ was critically acclaimed but hardly what you would call a commercial success however it did make an impression with someone who turned out to be very important in the band’s career. That person was Prince who gave the band ‘Manic Monday’, which would go on to be the first chart success, hitting number 2 on the charts. The only thing that managed to outsell the song at the time was, fittingly, Prince’s ‘Kiss’.
Following this, the band released their second, more polished album ‘Different Light’ and when the single ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ hit number one it became clear that the Bangles had officially hit the mainstream.
The band continued to succeed throughout the 80s however tensions within the band were growing, eventually leading to a split in 1989. The band couldn’t stay apart long though and after reforming less than a decade later to record the theme song for an Austin Powers film, the band have remained together, releasing records and selling out shows worldwide.
Live reviews
A person could be forgiven for thinking of a Bangles show as being nothing but a nostalgia fest. To be sure, the group plays the crowd-pleasing hits, offering up rousing versions of “Walk Like An Egyptian”, “Manic Monday” alongside sweet ballads like the chart-topping “Eternal Flame”. If all you're looking for is that trip down memory lane, a Bangles show delivers.
Susanna Hoffs and the Peterson sisters (Vickie and Debbie, who along with Hoffs represent three of the four original members of the group) aren't particularly interested in being a nostalgia band. In fact, the group have released two fantastic records in the last few years, albums that arguably sound as good or better than their 1980s releases.
The group seems to revel in their newer material, using it to make up a good chunk of their regular set list. In fact, it's when doing their newer songs that a Bangles show really begins to rock, as there's an almost heavy, garage rock retro vibe to many of their new songs (a version of Elvis Costello's “Doll Revolution (Tear Off Your Own Head)” is particularly smoking hot).
Years of playing and touring—either together or as part of other music projects—have honed The Bangles into a group of excellent musicians as well. Few groups, in fact, can carry off multi-part vocal harmonies in a live setting the way these ladies can. And if some of the covers they do are expected (such as their hit version of “Hazy Shade Of Winter”), a few choices (particularly Love's “7 & 7 Is”) are an unexpected, hard-rocking treat to see live.

Los Angeles pop group the Bangles have outlived the prolific decade of the 80s and although this is where they scored the majority of their commercial success, they have proven themselves to have real career longevity. Three of the five original members of this all female pop/rock band remain and although some dismiss them as a pop fad, for those who go and see their live show know this could not be further from the truth.
Each musician is incredibly well trained and even the nostalgic 'Walk Like an Egyptian' includes raucous instrumental breakdowns. In fact there are a number of guitar solos showcasing the ongoing talent of Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson. They also have a huge amount of international hits that were inescapable for anybody who owned a radio through the 80s and a large quantity of the 90s so therefore the venue is united in song for the likes of 'Manic Monday'. It is 'Eternal Flame' that receives the largest bellow-along chorus though as all three women enthuse the audience to get involved. They leave on a high of 'In Your Room' and the whole room is awarding this hard working outfit with rapturous applause.
great nostalgic and memorable show took me back to 80's when music was music not like this autotune music which we have now singer come on stage with cloth on and leave with bra and panty and have millions fan on social media

Q&A: Susanna Hoffs at Chicago Humanities Festival • Chicago
Susanna Hoffs (Photo by Shervin Lainez)
Susanna Hofffs
Chicago Humanities Festival
Chop Shop, Chicago
April 13, 2023
By Tom Lanham
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” Charles Dickens once drily observed. And nobody could relate better to such innate situational irony than any contemporary artist — someone who traditionally creates to earn a living unimpeded — who found themselves staying not only busy but oddly inspired by the last three altogether grim years of the coronavirus pandemic. Take, for example, ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs, who, since her band’s official breakup in 1989, has steadily released four solo sets, plus three Under the Covers cover-song anthologies with Matthew Sweet, also her bandmate in Ming Tea, Mike Myers’ faux-mod backing group that first inspired his zany Austin Powers movies (which Hoffs’ husband Jay Roach directed). So she’s never suffered for work. “But I dunno — for me, it’s gotten so crazy recently, it’s just been nonstop, and I think that’s a good thing,” she marvels over her Herculean lockdown achievements: A new fifth album, the Peter Asher-produced The Deep End, a collection of mostly-obscure acoustic covers, plus the completion of her very first novel, This Bird Has Flown, with a backing book tour (a Chicago Humanities-sponsored signing appearance, featuring a sit-down chat with The Interview Show’s Mark Bazer, plus a solo concert, hits the Chop Shop this Thursday April 13 ; www.chicagogumanities.org ). “So it’s been thrilling, with me feeling a sense of euphoria, almost, that all these passion projects have come to fruition. But the fact that they’re dropping at the same time has turned into a real when-it-rains-it-pours moment, you know?”
So Hoffs is shrugging off any potential pangs of guilt and getting back on the road proudly promoting her work. Just having bumped into the legendary studio Svengali Asher was cause enough for celebration, she swears. And while they agreed on subtly-tweaked versions of more obvious classics like Yaz(oo)’s “Only You,” Squeeze’s “Black Coffee in Bed,” The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb,” and Leslie Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” it was the keen-eared producer who urged her to explore newer artists like Dodie (“Would You Be So Kind”), Holly Humberstone (“Deep End”), Brandy Clark (“Pawn Shop”), and even the collaborative work of Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas (“When the Party’s Over”). And — in prime perfect-storm fashion — both undertakings just happen to be published/released now in April. Hoffs took time out from her book tour to bring us all up to speed…
IE: So, were there any other projects you completed during lockdown? Your feature-length film debut, maybe?
SUSANNA HOFFS: Well, I guess I had my feature-length film debut in The Allnighter (1987), which has become a cult classic. But no, no — I don’t think that will be what I dive into next. I’m actually very eager to write another novel because I had such a great time doing it. I mean, it was unexpectedly blissful.
IE: When did you first dabble in prose? Maybe short stories as a kid?
SH: Well, I was always a reader from a very early age. And my mom would take my brothers and me to the library, and I would just plant myself in whatever section I was interested in, so it would’ve been books kind of geared for younger readers. And my mother was a big reader, and she had a great, great collection of books. Her shelves were filled, and I’ve inherited a lot of her awesome paperbacks from the ‘60s, too. So I always had access to books, and it was a very nice household to grow up in because my father was a psychoanalyst, I had two brothers, and my mother’s an artist who’s directed movies (including The Allnighter ) and made a lot of paintings and sculptures. My parents met at Yale when my dad was in medical school, and my mom was in graduate school, back in 1953 or something, and they didn’t really have women as undergrads at Yale. Obviously, all that has changed. So it was a vibrant setting for a kid like me, and my mom was addicted to listening to music, so very, very early on in my life, I had kind of an unusual response to music. She claims that even as a baby, she’d have the radio on with pop music from the ‘60s, and I was reacting to it, cooing along and rocking and rolling in my crib. And it just went from there. So I feel like — though it is a bit of a left turn to have decided to write a novel and started in my fifties, and now I’m 64, which felt like more of a momentous birthday because of The Beatles song — I’m very grateful that I can just take the time that I need to sit in a room, at a little desk and to have that many years working on the book that I can now see it come to fruition, and then meet readers . I mean, it was a very solitary experience, having been in a band and collaborating and working with Matthew Sweet. But once the book was bought by Little Brown, and they wanted to put it out, I was stunned and surprised and thrilled. And I also, right around that time, had connected with Peter Asher. So it was a funny thing that during the pandemic, when we all were in our houses and not really able to commune with others in the way we normally would have, I got a lot of work done, and I was even able to be in a recording studio, bubbled up with some the best musicians on the planet and make an album at the same time.
SH: Well, at first, I wrote at a little desk in another part of the house, upstairs. And then I kept trying to find the right location, so then I wrote at the kitchen table, and then I wrote at this little island in the kitchen. And it affected my head — I started getting cricks in my neck from how I was sitting. And finally, I ended up in the music room, where we have a drum kit and all the guitars that I’ve collected over the course of my career in music, and they’re hung on the wall so that anyone who comes over if they want, can just grab a guitar and not have to dig through a bunch of cases. They’re just all there, and you can be a kid in a candy store and say, “I wanna pick up that guitar!” And there’s amplifiers, there’s a drum kit, and I set up a little folding card table in the corner of the music room. And it had a lovely view of the garden, it had a view of all these instruments, so writing a protagonist who was a musician, I think there was something to being in a room surrounded by instruments. Although I initially didn’t think about it this way, I think it was probably a good vibe. So I wrote in that room, with all those guitars staring at me.
IE: When you scroll down on your website, there’s a screenshot of this gorgeous guitar embossed with your name. Do you have your own signature model?
SH: Yeah! Back in the ‘80s, Rickenbacker approached me to do a signature guitar. And they only made a run of, I believe, 300, and they’re all accounted for. And people have asked me if they can get one, so perhaps Rickenbacker would consider doing another run. It never occurred to me to ask them because it was such an honor when they initially did it. I have a Rickenbacker book somewhere on the shelf, so I know that Tom Petty might have had a similar one, which is a full-scale neck but a three-quarter body. And I have an old three-quarter neck, three-quarter body guitar like John Lennon played. But I ended up with the full-scale neck because it was more…just what I was used to.
IE: Without spoilers, give me the basic plot line of This Bird Has Flown.
SH: Well, to start with, my book has been optioned by Universal Pictures, and I actually wrote the screenplay, and two of my favorite female producers are producing it. No actresses are attached yet, but things are really heating up. So the book is basically the story of a one-hit wonder, Jane Start, and we find her in Vegas at the very beginning, and she’s down on her luck. And the song that she had a hit with was a cover, but from a very iconic, beloved rock star — she had discovered this more obscure song and done a very radical revamping, or reinvention, of it and had this massive hit. But now, we cut to ten years later, and we find her down on her luck, thrown over for a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model by her longtime boyfriend. So she’s trying to recover from the pain of that, living with her parents temporarily, and she needs to make money. You know — it’s every box you could tick for “Things Aren’t Going Well For This Person.” But her manager, who’s a wonderful British character, has flown in for this gig she has, and a gig is a gig — she needs the work for financial reasons. So she ends up performing at a bachelor party in Vegas, which is not the ideal show she wants. But as a musician myself, I chose to give my protagonist Jane the same line of work that I have experienced myself because I know, for instance, what the experience is like of coming down in an elevator in Vegas to play a private. It’s a little-known phenomenon in the music business, but private gigs are a thing — you play corporate parties or someone’s birthday party sometimes. There are all kinds of bizarre things, especially for musicians, but you just don’t hear about them. So it starts there, and the spark is lit. And then sparks fly before too long. So I don’t wanna give away too many spoilers, but she meets a stranger on a plane, actually, and I’ll let the reader have the journey of the book at their own pace and just let them enjoy it on the page.
IE: So it’s a story of redemption?
SH: Yeah. There is a redemption for the character, and that’s part of the arc of her journey. But I don’t wanna give too much away because I’ve realized that it’s really fun for people to discover it as they go. And it was just endlessly entertaining to write, and I really loved just being in the company of these characters. It was like, in the process of writing, I was almost imagining the movie version of it, and I just had to report what I was seeing in my mind.
IE: There’s a bonus scene on the first Austin Powers Blu-ray that should have immediately followed the scene where Michael McDonald’s nameless henchman gets slowly flattened by Austin’s steamroller. It shows a suburban kid riding his bike home, then running inside to find his mom crying on the phone, next to a framed Henchman of the Year photo of McDonald, who she’s just been informed has been killed. Tearfully, she looks at the camera and murmurs, “No one ever thinks about how these things affect the poor family of a henchman…” And your husband chose not to include that in the movie. Did he give you similarly-sharp pointers on your character’s continuity?
SH: Ha! That’s great! I wanna check that out because we’re due for a re-watch of the three Austin Powers movies — I love them! And I’m glad they included the outtakes — those are always so much fun. But yeah, I got great reads from Jay, great reads. Because you’re basically alone in the whole process — that’s the thing. And Jay gave really excellent notes. There was something in very the eleventh hour that my editor at Little Brown remembered. And he hadn’t had the chance to read the draft that was the so-called final one, but Jay just set eyes on it and said, “Umm…I think this is a little repetitive here.” And every bone in my body felt, “But this is due to be on my editor’s desk right now in New York — I’m supposed to be done with this revision!” But I looked at it again, and I went, “You know, you’re right.” And I ran to my desk, revised it right on the spot, and ran back to him and said, “What do you think about this ?” And he said, “Yeah. That’s it, exactly.” And I was like, “Thank you so much for just calling it out, calling out what you noticed!” And I sent it to my editor, and we all agreed. So that was the great gift of having my longtime spouse — who’s also a storyteller —every once in a while clap eyes on something that I was working on. And I’d say, “Do you have a minute to check this out and give me your thoughts on it?” Criticism can be the greatest gift in the world. And I always read the various drafts of things he’s working on because A) I’m curious, but B) We do this for each other, and it’s such a nice thing to be able to say, “You know, this isn’t working for me, although I love this other part.” It’s the same as watching various film edits, even with — like you just pointed out — some really great moments that ended up in the outtakes. It’s so fun because when you’re the director, you’re really in the hot seat. But with Jay, it’s so great because he always does his own focus groups when he has early screenings. And he loves to know — he’s like, “Don’t hold back. I want to know!” And it’s such a useful way of kind of getting things as close to right and perfect as you can. I mean, there is no such thing as perfect. But that feedback is essential.
IE: Your book’s protagonist chose an obscure song, initially. Which kind of parallels what you and Peter Asher did with the mostly lesser-known songs you chose to redo for The Deep End.
SH: Yeah! The whole process during the pandemic was we bubbled up, and I went to Peter’s house, and we would just mess around with guitars and try on songs for size. But the thing that I found with Peter is that he has this incredible eye for new artists, and he’s always on the prowl for some new cool thing that he can find. And I don’t have practice like that — I have playlist after playlist that I keep on my phone of favorite songs. So I just don’t have the practice that he does of finding new things, so he found all these new artists that I wasn’t aware of, and it was really kind of exciting to find out about this new crop of amazing creators, singer-songwriters. It was great.
IE: You’ve actually trod on sacred New Wave turf before when you covered ABC’s “The Look of Love.” But attempting Yaz(oo)’s “Only You” is just a whole new level.
SH: I wish “The Look of Love” was on Spotify! I’ve been rattling the cages at New Line — why isn’t “What’s it All About, Austin?”— which was the “Alfie” cover — and “The Look of Love” available there? It drives me crazy! I’ve tried to get to anyone I can reach at New Line to please, please, please upload the three Austin Powers soundtracks to Spotify. I mean, it’s a no-brainer, so I don’t know why they haven’t done it because I am so proud of those two songs, in particular. And I was so sad that Burt Bacharach recently passed, but I had the great privilege of meeting Burt and getting his blessing on changing the lyrics from “Alfie” to “Austin” for the Austin Powers movies because Burt was in the Austin Powers movies. So it’s just been a frustration. But I think there’s a whole. New generation kids just now discovering the Austin Powers movies because they really are quite fantastic. And my thing with “Only You” is, whenever that song would come on — and I have it on a lot of playlists — I always crank it, but that high harmony just isn’t there, so I would always duet with Alison Moyet on that. I would always just sing it as a duet because her voice is so richly resonant and gorgeous. And I love that song, and I love her so much, and I hope to meet her one day. But I always sang that high harmony, so I pitched it to Peter that way, like, “Can I do kind of a duet with myself?” And he said, “Sure!” He loves that song, too. So we definitely went in with the spirit of reinvention. And for me, there’s emotion and a story lurking in every form of art, but in songs, too. We sort of gloss over the fact that — even though a song might only last for three minutes — there is a story in there. And whether it’s a story of heartbreak or a story of bliss, it’s in there. So it was just so fun to discover those stories on The Deep End.

By Kelly OLone | September 22, 2023
Susanna Hoffs is known for being a founding member of the hit 80s band The Bangles. She went on to have a solo career with several albums under her belt. See what this sultry singer has been up to ever since those Manic Mondays.
Background Information/Early Life
Susanna Lee Hoffs was born on January 17, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, to Tamar Ruth, a film director/writer/producer, and Joshua Allen Hoffs, a psychoanalyst.
Hoffs began playing guitar as a teenager, after a childhood of having her mother play Beatles music to her.
The singer attended Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades, CA, and continued her education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated in 1980.
Hoffs was a production assistant during college and first appeared onscreen in the 1978 film Stony Island.
Hoffs attributes her exposure to punk rock as why she pursued a music career rather than her initial plans of becoming a dancer.
Music Career
Early bands.
Before striking it big, Hoffs performed in various bands, including The Psychiatrists/The Unconscious, along with David Roback and his brother Stephen, formed in the late 1970s while Hoffs was still in college.
In addition, Hoffs started the group The Bangs with Debbi and Vicki Peterson, but the band was required to change its name because of an East Coast boy band with the same name, it was then the band became known as The Bangles.
The Bangles
The Bangles released their first album in 1982, a self-titled extended play (Ep) under the Faulty Products Label, and two years later, The Bangles released their first full album, All Over the Place, with Columbia Records.
The Bangles are considered one of the most successful female bands of all time and have several hit songs, like Walk Like an Egyptian and Manic Monday.
Hoffs was a member of The Bangles from its inception in 1982 until the band disbanded in 1989.
As Hoffs was singled out as the group’s lead singer, there became tensions between its members, eventually leading the band to disband.
The Bangles would reunite in 2000 and released Doll Revolution in 2003, their fourth album. Eight years later, in 2011, the band released their fifth and final album, Sweetheart of the Sun.
Solo Career
When The Bangles disbanded in 1989, Hoffs went out on her own and released several albums as a solo artist. Her first solo album, When You’re a Boy, produced My Side of the Bed, which would become a top 40 hit.
Her second album, Susanna Hoffs, received praise but was not an overall success, while her album, Someday, was considered her best music to date.
Covers with Matthew Sweet
Hoffs joined Matthew Sweet in 2006 and recorded fifteen covers of classic rock songs ranging from the 1960s to 1970s.
The album, Under The Covers, Vol. 1, was the precursor to Volumes 2 and 3, released in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Under The Covers Vol. 2 featured cover songs by Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Fleetwood Mac, and more.
She also formed the fake band, Ming Tea, with Matthew Sweet and actor Mike Myers after Myers appeared on Saturday Night Live in the 90s. The faux band would go on to appear in all three Austin Powers films, after appearing in several clubs and television performances.
Hoffs reached out to her Bangles bandmates to join her for Austin Powers, which was directed by Hoffs’ husband, Jay Roach. The original Bangles members reunited to record a song for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
What is she doing? Is she still making music/touring?
In 2021, Hoffs released a covers album, Bright Lights, which would become her fourth solo album and contained covers originally performed by artists like The Velvet Underground and Badfinger.
Hoffs also appeared in Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover of The Bangles’ hit Manic Monday. The duo shared a split screen while Armstrong sang and Hoffs played the guitar.
The singer was also called upon to induct the Zombies into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, Hoffs shared her admiration of the band, saying, "I’ve loved the Zombies for as long as I can remember," she said, "It was love at first listen."
Hoffs also has taken a stab at writing and published her first novel, This Bird Has Flown , which will be released in spring 2023.
The book centers around Jane Smart, a recently single and broke thirty-something who had a hit song ten years ago.
On the Bangles website , it appears the band is still in touch and continues to spread the music they made famous.
Personal Life
Hoffs married filmmaker Jay Roach in 1993, and the couple has two children.
After the wedding, Roach converted to Judaism. Today, Hoffs posts current and vintage photos of herself on Instagram .

Day tour to Gorki Leninskie
From Moscow
► Tours ► Day Tours ► From Moscow ► Day tour to Gorki Leninskie
Even if you are not a massive fan of the USSR, Lenin or socialism, Gorki Leninskie on the outskirts of Moscow is still a great place to visit, as it is one of the few estate houses in Russia belonging to a middling-class of landowners which has survived today with its interior intact. Of course the reason it has survived intact is thanks to the fact that Lenin spent the last years of his life here and after his death it was turned into a museum. Before Lenin, the estate belonged to the Zinaida Morozova – the widow of the famous Russian patron of the arts Savva Morozov. After the death of her husband, Zinaida wanted to turn the estate at Gorki into a family home with her new husband Anatoly Reinbolt, and the famous Russian architect Fyodor Shekhtel was hired to carry out the reconstruction

- The Large House – this is the house where Lenin spent the last years of his life and where he died on 21 January 1924. You will see not only the rooms where he worked and relaxed, but also the rooms of his sister, the beautiful summer gardens and lots of items connected with Lenin and the former owners of the estate.
- Lenin’s Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost – this car was bought in England for governmental use. At first it was a standard car with four wheels, but it was transferred to a factory in St Petersburg for modification: its body was placed on caterpillar tracks and skis were attached to the front. Lenin travelled from Moscow to Gorki in this car, and made trips around the Moscow Region in it. On the night of 21 January 1924, after the autopsy on Lenin's body, Lenin’s brain was taken in this car to Moscow to be studied, and on the return journey the car brought back a zinc coffin.
- Lenin's Kremlin office and apartment – on 12 December 1922 Lenin worked for the last time at his office in the Kremlin and departed for Gorki. His Kremlin office and apartment was then sealed shut. During the presidency of Yeltsin the rooms were opened up and it was decided to transfer the furniture to Gorki Leninskie where the rooms were recreated. You will see here the actual furniture that Lenin used as well as other interesting artefacts, some of which date from an even earlier period: a map of the time of the Russian Civil War, materials for congresses and conferences, collections of statistics, and presents from workers and peasants sent from all over the country. The clocks in the office display the time of 8.15 when Lenin last left his office.
- Lenin Museum – this is the newest building on the estate. The museum was built in 1987 and represents a true monument of the late Soviet period. The museum was cutting edge for its time and features audio components. The centre of each hall has a cube of black glass which displays a six-minute long film. The museum may be dedicated to Lenin, but today it also serves as a museum of the technology and spirit of the Soviet Union in the 1980s.
- Burial of the Leader Monument - this is one of the most unusual monuments of Vladimir Lenin. Nowhere else is the founder of the Soviet Union depicted as a corpse being carried, after all “Lenin lived, Lenin lives and Lenin will always live". The designer is Sergey Merkurov who also was responsible for creating Lenin’s death mask. He was at the time the country’s leading specialists in death masks and also worked on death masks for Lev Tolstoy, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Mikhail Bulgakov and Maksim Gorky.
