An extraordinarily talented guitarist and songwriter, Anna Calvi (born 24th September 1980) hails from Twickenham, London, UK, creating complex arrangements in a similar vein as PJ Harvey, with her darkly romantic, atmospheric pop.

Exposed to music at an early age, Calvi developed a love of classical music, much influenced by composers such as Ennio Morricone, Messiaen and Debussy. Yet she was also brought up listening to the eclectic sounds of Captain Beefheart and the Rolling Stones, finding significant inspiration in her guitar playing from artists such as Django Reinhardt and Jimmy Hendrix. Studying violin and guitar at the University of Southampton, UK, achieving a BA in music, Calvi set several years working as a private music teacher, before pursuing a music career in 2010.

Joined by multi-instrumentalist Mally Harpaz and drummer Daniel Madden-wood, she began performing at various venues before caching the attention of Domino Records. Brian Eno also took an interest to the talented Calvi, describing her as “the biggest thing since Patti Smith.” She was invited to support the Arctic Monkeys and Nick Cave’s Grinderman project, helping to gain further exposure.

Her self-titled debut album was released in 2011 to great critical acclaim, entering the UK charts at number 40. She also achieved significant chart success in France, reaching number 17, number 33 in Austria and a chart position of 40 in Switzerland. The album captured her raw talent, creating an almost orchestral sound through her textured and dynamic guitar playing.

Her live performances have been praised for her display of her guitar virtuosity, as well as creating an intense, dark atmosphere, making her a truly captivating performer. Despite being completely against current trends in popular music, she has garnered many accolades, including two Mercury Prize nominations. Her second album, “One Breath,” was released to wide critical acclaim in 2013. Whilst her first album took her six years to complete, her second took only six weeks to record.

As the headline act of the emerge NME radar tour, Anna Calvi took to the stage of London’s Koko on the final night of the tour as if she’d been there 100 times before. Assured, confident and sizzling with fiery energy, her performance plays out like the simmering of a storm.

Dressed in her trademark red, Calvi is a commanding stage presence. The pared down set and minimal backing band makes Calvi and her guitar the sole focus. The intensity of her performance completely absorbs the audience, and this is nowhere more apparent than during "Love Won’t Be Leaving," as Calvi takes the song from it’s moody, subdued beginning to it’s beautiful, rousing finale. Calvi herself describes playing live like "almost going into a trance," and her hypnotic stage presence takes the audience along with her for the ride. The haunting vocals of "Suzanne and I" resonate across the packed room, and it’s hard to believe that this Twickenham-born singer/songwriter was ever afraid of performing live. Her performance could easily come across cold and disengaged, but something about the way Calvi connects with the music means the crowd are right there with her. She doesn’t need to rely on fancy staging or on stage banter - in fact, the lack of distractions make her performance all the more powerful and unforgettable.

Twickenham songstress Anna Calvi is doing pretty well so far in the critical stakes after both her eponymous debut album and its follow-up 'One Breath' were both nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize Award. The bold art rock performer has been praised for taking the genre of rock back to its very basics and re-imagining it in a powerfully feminine way.

You only have to watch Calvi perform live to truly understand this bubbling power they mention as she grapples with gigantic guitar riffs and wrestles them into submission during opener 'Suzanne & I'. She demonstrates a chamber pop vocal on 'Blackout' whilst 'Eliza' is a battle cry to those who believe rock is purely a man's game. There is no doubt Anna Calvi can play and her voice is the added edge while the overall dark and twisted live show will see her go further. The acclaim is likely to only increase so go and see this talented performer whilst you have the chance as she is destined for an arena as large as her guitar riffs.

Astonishing, electrifying, uncompromising. One of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time. Anna Calvi has great presence and talent, beautifully lit and with an excellent supporting band. Also, for once, during the quiet parts you could hear a pin drop as the audience actually paid attention and engaged with the performance. If you get the chance to see her, go.

She's like an old Roxy Music album cover come to life, blazing a screeching guitar. And wow what a strong voice,she's a little outside of what is happening now, so if its commercial structured songs your after, go see Ellie Golding! This girl is SEXY & ALIVE!

Anna Calvi has announced an upcoming EP, alongside a new single release.

'Tommy' will comprise four songs, including a cover of Red Right Hand, the Peaky Blinders television series theme by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, a cover of Bob Dylan's All The Tired Horses, and two new tracks penned for the show, Ain't No Grave and Burning Down.

Calvi wrote and performed the score for the fifth and sixth seasons of Peaky Blinders, with the EP taking its name from the main character in the BBC series, Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy. Speaking about the release, Calvi said:

"I've been living in the character of Tommy Shelby for years now, after scoring series five and this final series of Peaky Blinders. The only way to write for this show is to get inside his head - I’ve dreamed about him every night for months, and when I pick up my guitar I try to play to his inner thoughts. My guitar is his violence and my voice is his hope. I always felt he should have ‘a song’ that sums him up - he’s the ultimate antihero - murderous, cold, terrifying, and yet has a deep love for his family and a naive childlike hope that he will one day rise above it all. I wanted to believe that Aint No Grave was the song going round in his head as he slow motion walks through his life. I think Tommy will be a part of me forever!"

Creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight added: "A new Anna Calvi single is always cause for celebration and I’d like to add my name to the list of people who are singing its praises. I’d also like to thank Anna for all the work she has put in on the soundtrack of series six of Peaky Blinders."

Ahead of the EP's release on May 6, Calvi has dropped the smoldering lead track Ain't No Grave, which shows off her powerhouse vocals.

Anna Calvi’s captivating and atmospheric compositions, her first foray into scores, for seasons 5 and 6 of Peaky Blinders, the BBC’s record-breaking TV show, will now be released via Domino Soundtracks. Peaky Blinders: Season 5 & 6 (Original Score) comprises 37 tracks over a double LP.

Talking about her work on the score, Calvi says “Composing for Peaky Blinders was about atmosphere and space. There’s so much nuance when it comes to scoring to picture. It’s more about what you leave out than what you leave in. I had to let the voice of the actors do the talking but find ways of bringing out the emotion within that. I became completely obsessed with Tommy Shelby, I dreamt about him every night whilst I was working on the scores, I had to really inhabit the show.”

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
