Soccer’s Celebrity Supporters: The Clubs That The Stars Align With

Featured Image

While the superstars run around on the pitch, some clubs have even more recognizable fans supporting them. Everyone knows who Tom Cruise and David Beckham support, but what clubs are the younger generations of celebrities choosing to align with?

Here we go through what clubs are being backed by which celebrities and how they became supporters.

What Club Has The Best Celebrity Fans?

In the Juventus corner, you find two of the most popular young artists of this generation with both Drake and Rihanna supporting the Italian club. Having just Queen Ri-Ri as a fan is definitely enough for the club, but they landed both her and her lesser-known ex-boyfriend.

Drake is not the most dedicated Juventus fan as he has supported other clubs in the past — but if Paul Pogba gifts you a kit, you're no longer a hard rapper but just another Juventus fanboy.

While Juventus has two of the biggest stars of the modern day, Chelsea's famous supporters could match up to their star power. Everyone knows Will Ferrel is a big supporter, but what about NFL great and three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt? He made the decision to put his weight behind Chelsea as it was the first gear he received when he was looking for a team to follow. Seems easy enough. Chelsea should look into putting him on the backline.

Learning about the @premierleague and becoming a fan. Chelsea gear was the first apparel I received, so I rep it! Who's the team to follow? — JJ Watt (@JJWatt) March 14, 2014

The Blue support does not stop with J.J. as esteemed actress and model Cara Delevinge has been a long-time supporter. While some celebrities like to bounce around popular clubs, she has stuck with her team for a while. The low-quality picture of her and former Chelsea defender David Luiz from 2014 proves that she is not a bandwagon fan.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne)

Even though this man might be a few generations removed from being similar to these other celebrities, this guy inspired and educated enough of the younger generation that he is going in here. David Attenborough, the voice of Planet Earth and many other wonderful films, is also a die-hard supporter of Chelsea. His brother, the late Lord Attenborough, was an even bigger fan as he was a club director and vice-president at one point. With the most satisfying voice in the world, maybe Chelsea should think about adding him on as an announcer. I can already picture the long, calming "gooooaaalllll" call.

It was rumored that famous recording artist Ed Sheeran was also a Chelsea supporter as he could be seen supporting the Blue from the stands. But, Ed is actually an Ipswitch fan and just tags along with his Chelsea-loving family to matches.

While Chelsea might have quite the celebrity fan base, Fulham's supporters give them a run for their money. With just one celebrity fan supporting the club, Fulham has far and away the best support. Actress Margot Robbie takes the cake as the best supporter for obvious reasons. Who needs wins, trophies or even money when you have Morgot freaking Robbie rooting for ya. Good work Fulham, we see you.

They might have the support from a beuatiful actress, but do they have support from one of the greatest basketball players of all time? Nope, Liverpool takes that one as LeBron James is more than just a Reds supporter, but an investor as well. In 2011, a private investment group including LBJ invested in Liverpool Football Club. He purchased a 2% stake for around $6.5 million and now has seen his investment increase to around $51 million.

Not only does he support them as a fan, but at the bank too. You would think that's exactly the kind of fan clubs are looking for.

LeBron James detailed his "amazing" #LFC experience and discusses "unique" #ENG goal for Henderson https://t.co/OSYl6LWIdf — Liverpool FC News (@LivEchoLFC) July 9, 2021

The famous supporters of Liverpool don't stop with LeBron, as six-time Grammy nominee Lana Del Rey is also a fan. She even killed an acapella version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that is featured in " The End of The Storm "  Liverpool documentary. With that voice behind you, how could you lose?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lana Del Rey (@lanadelrey)

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown was born into being a Liverpool fan and has not changed course since. Liverpool really has attracted quite the iconic fan base with LeBron James, Lana Del Rey and Millie Bobbie Brown leading the group.

With Rihanna behind Juventus and Lana supporting Liverpool, Tottenham secured their own generational artist as a fan a long time ago: Adele. The 15-time Grammy winner is from Tottenham and has been a supporter her whole life. She is joined by beloved High School Musical graduate Zach Efron. He is definitely not as die-hard of a fan of Spurs as Adele, but he is a good enough friend with Spurs star Dele Alli to be personally invited to games.

With the wide variety of celebrities who've chosen and supported their football club, what club comes away with the best celebrity fan base? We all know who I would pick... Fulham.

Tom Cruise 'supports' Atletico Madrid… but he's not the only Hollywood star with an unlikely 'soccer' team

The ultimate leading man is apparently an Atletico fan… but he's not the only superstar with an unlikely allegiance to a European football club

tom cruise favourite football team

It seems a little unlikely.

The idea that Tom Cruise likes to sit down, put his feet up and cheer on his favourite La Liga team is hard to believe. And yet, apparently, the Mission Impossible, Jerry Maguire and Top Gun star is an Atletico Madrid supporter.

Maybe hanging around his his pal David Beckham gave him the 'soccer' bug. Maybe - MAYBE - it was just because he was in Madrid, promoting his new film The Mummy. Whatever the reason, Cruise has declared his Atletico allegiance during a tour of the Wanda Metropolitano, the 68,000 seater stadium which will play home to Diego Simeone's men next season.

"It's going to be a really magnificent stadium," said Cruise. "I can't wait to watch them come back and play here now."

Slightly odd to think of a Hollywood A-lister supporting a European 'soccer' team, isn't it?

Well, Cruise is not the only one…

Justin Bieber and Everton

One tweet from a ludicrous pop star, and The Toffees were suddenly robbed of the credibility they had spent decades developing:

Tom Hanks and Aston Villa

This is a genuine quote from Hanks:

"I fell in love with Aston Villa because I thought the name sounded like an island off Sardinia."

Well, it's as good a reason as any for supporting Villa.

Will Ferrell and Chelsea

Ferrell actually played "soccer" as a kid, so apparently knows a little bit about the game. Not enough to realise those shorts are unacceptable, mind you.

Spike Lee and Arsenal

We don't like jumping to conclusions, but Spike is perhaps the only name on this list who genuinely likes football. He supposedly even wanted to get Thierry Henry to appear in one of his films.

Well, Thierry does have plenty of va va voom …

Sylvester Stallone at Everton

An American shareholder at Everton took Sly to a game in 2007, while he was promoting the final Rocky film.

Did he enjoy it? Well, put it this way. He probably didn't need method acting to play his character in Escape to Victory: the goalkeeper who doesn't know what a corner is.

Sugar Ray Leonard at Stoke

One of the greatest boxers of all time, at Stoke v Chelsea, back in 2008.

Nope, no idea.

Elijah Wood and West Ham

Some cynics would say Elijah Wood only appeared at Upton Park to publicise his stomach tighteningly awful "hooligan" film, Green Street.

We're saying nothing.

Mike Myers and Liverpool

The parents of Mr Austin Powers are both from Liverpool… so he's as entitled to support the club as a lot of you currently reading this.

Snoop Dogg and Man United

Looks cool.

Sadly, the coolness is somewhat ruined by the number of clubs Snoop supposedly 'supports':

tom cruise favourite football team

Katy Perry and West Ham

OK, so Katy Perry is only wearing this West Ham outfit because she was married to famous Hammer Russell Brand at the time.

Still, we make no apologies for including her in this list…

Who would you NOT want supporting your team?

Notre dame football: how tom cruise has helped the irish stay undefeated heading into college football playoff.

tom cruise favourite football team

SOUTH BEND, Ind. —  Ian Book already faces a lot of pressure being the starting quarterback for Notre Dame. He's one of four QBs left playing for a chance to win a national championship and he recently was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That pressure gets amped up for road games, as the Fighting Irish tend to get a team's best effort when they come into town.

For Book, though, his first important decision on road trips comes long before the opening kickoff. In fact, it usually comes from about 40,000 feet in the air.

"We are 4-0 on picking the best movies so far," Book said.

When you find out you’re on the cover of @SInow . Cool huh, @ian_book23? We’re pretty proud of you. #GoIrish ☘️ #BeatTigers pic.twitter.com/N4AfvDMpdI — Notre Dame Football (@NDFootball) December 14, 2018

What the junior quarterback was referring to is the movie selection he and starting center Sam Mustipher make when on the plane to road games. It's as important of a decision as Book will make the entire weekend.

"We'll bounce back ideas from each other ... there was one with Tom Cruise in it. They were older movies, and we both hadn't seen them. So, we both gave them a shot," Book said. "It's something we do every flight. We just watch a movie and tap each other when something cool happens."

MORE:  College football bowl schedule, scores, TV listings, matchup information

The one with Cruise in it was 'Collateral,' Mustipher confirmed.

"It was with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, where Jamie Foxx is a cab driver. And then we watched 'The Commuter' with Liam Neeson," Mustipher said.

Mustipher sees it as more of a collaborative effort when it comes to selecting which movie to watch on the flight.

Playoffs ☘️ #GoIrish pic.twitter.com/vFQPQxj4pZ — Chris Finke (@SlipperyFox10) December 2, 2018

"So, on the plane, he'll either sit right in front of me or right next to me -- we've been next to each other for a few of the flights," the graduate senior said. "He'll pick something, watch it, and I'll watch the previews of it and let him know if I think it's going to be a good movie. I just trust what he says."

The relationship between a quarterback and his center is one of great importance to every football team. These in-flight moments allow Book and Mustipher to develop that.

RELATED:  Brian Kelly relishes Irish role as Playoff 'new kids on the block'

"Personally, my relationship with Sam has gotten so much better. As a team, he's a leader for the offensive line and a leader for this team in general," Book said. "Guys listen to him, and that's really important."

1. Beat Michigan 2. Protect this house 3. Win in November Now it’s time to finish the mission. #GraduatingChampions pic.twitter.com/rm1ydyt2M5 — Brian Kelly (@CoachBrianKelly) November 29, 2018

"I think off-the-field relationships is most important for chemistry between a quarterback and his football team," Mustipher added. "All the greats have a great rapport with all his teammates, and I think (Book) understands that. When you build that trust off the field, on the field becomes the easy part."

Notre Dame has taken a lot of long flights this year, including two to California. This means teammates have spent a lot of time sitting next to each other on trips across three time zones.

"I usually sit next to (running back) Tony Jones. That's my guy. That's my brother. He and I share a lot of laughs," running back Dexter Williams said. "And Book is kind of two seats in front of me. I then have Alize (Mack) in front of me and Chase Claypool right behind me. It's just one big family when we ride on these planes."

Williams and Jones bond over a game called 'Knockout.'

12-0. Ok, cool. Book em. ☘️ pic.twitter.com/bN32Jsprna — Tommy Rees (@T_Rees11) November 25, 2018

"Basically, you have two ways to go. So, if someone goes up or down, you have to go to the side. And if they go to the side, you have to go up or down. Basically, whoever gets to three knockouts first wins," Williams said, explaining how the game works. "So, that's a game we usually play. We just try to have fun."

MORE:  Fighting Irish to take on Navy in 2020 at Dublin's Aviva Stadium

Linebacker Te'von Coney and defensive end Jerry Tillery also enjoy playing the 'Knockout' game. Coney and Tillery also use that time to learn, especially on the flight back after games.

"We get the iPad and watch film. Try to go over some things and see how we can get better," Coney said. "We're always trying to find ways to improve ourselves and never be complacent."

Being able to have those moments off the field has brought the Irish together on it.

"It definitely helps us out on the field. Just from all the hardships we've been through since January and all the workouts (director of football performance coach Matt) Balis has put us through and how hard the practices have been," Williams said. "It's definitely created a bond that is unbreakable between us."

No word on the other two films Book and Mustipher watched to get to their 4-0 record.

Arsenal: Thomas Cruise Was Not Without Limits

By henry payne | jul 3, 2019.

TORQUAY, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 15: Thomas Cruise of Torquay United in action during the pre match warm up prior to the npower League Two match between Torquay United and Northampton Town at Plainmoor on December 15, 2012 in Torquay, England. (Photo by Pete Norton/Getty Images)

Quite frankly, I don’t want to write about transfer targets and what could happen at Arsenal Football Club this summer. So here is my attempt to write another feature.

Earlier this year, I wrote a feature on Luton Town F.C. goalkeeper James Shea. My tie to the former Arsenal shot-stopper was essentially nonexistent. I had never met him personally, but my parents somehow came in to contact with some of James’ family members. Word of my Arsenal fandom spread quickly, and soon I was the owner of two signed James Shea photos, photos which show a beaming James hoisting the 2009 FA Youth Cup trophy.

However, while James is the sole subject of one photograph, he is accompanied in the other. Standing alongside him in the second photograph was Thomas Daniel Cruise .

light. Related Story. Arsenal: Thierry Henry, Aaron Ramsey and James Shea

Signed to the Arsenal Academy at age seven, the Islington-born defender progressed through the ranks undoubtedly intent on becoming a household name. Capable of playing at left-back, in central defence, and in midfield, the 2007 scholar featured regularly for the Arsenal Reserves during his time in North London, he even started in goal on one occasion after Wojciech Szczesny suffered a dislocated finger during a warm-up. Nonetheless, Cruise’s story is just another example of how easy it is to fall by the wayside in professional football.

He made his one and only competitive appearance in 1-0 defeat against Olympiacos in the final Champions League group stage match of 2009/10 season. Cruise played the entire 90 minutes and was part of an Arsenal starting eleven which was the youngest team (21 years, 215 days) to ever play in a Champions League game. It was announced the day before the game that Thomas would start at left-back, and Arsène Wenger had some reassuring, complimentary words for his young defender;

"For me, there is only one Tom Cruise and it is the one who plays for Arsenal Football Club. I don’t care about headlines. Headlines or not Tom Cruise will play at left-back.If you are in his boots, at the start of the season you would not think for a second that you will play in the Champions League. It is good for him to get an opportunity in these games.I would not like him to be under too much pressure. But I believe he is a very good footballer.Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20091212223953/http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-there-s-only-one-tom-cruise-for-me"

Admittedly, having been an Arsenal fan since the ‘Invincibles’ season, I do not recall an essentially meaningless group stage match from over nine years ago. Cruise supposedly performed admirably, but had some nervy moments;

"It was quite a baptism for Cruise. The 18-year-old left-back had to contend with Olympiakos’s best player, the winger Luciano Galletti, and he was sometimes short of covering assistance.Source: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2009/dec/09/champions-league-olympiakos-arsenal-match-report"

For what it is worth, Wenger – who was renowned for defending his players – was pretty content post-match;

"I am very proud of the young players, there are a lot of positives. From Barnet to Athens is a big jump, but they did very well. Nobody was disappointing, and it is difficult to single out individual performances.Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8402103.stm"

However, as they often do, things did not work out for Thomas at Arsenal. Although he signed a contract extension two months after that night in Athens, he struggled in his quest for first-team football. He joined Carlisle United on an initial month-long loan in November 2010, which was then extended until January 8th, 2011. Coincidentally, former Arsenal Academy captain and United States right-back Frank Simek – who also made just a singular appearance for Arsenal – was an ever-present for Carlisle during the 2010/11 season.

Cruise had been wanting a loan move for a while. There was plenty of competition in the first team for the starting left-back role; Gaël Clichy, Kieran Gibbs, and Armand Traoré were all above Cruise in the pecking order. There were whispers that he was close to joining Nottingham Forest in January 2010, but nothing ever materialised. Nonetheless, he failed to make a lasting impression during his eight appearances (seven starts) with The Cumbrians. During one particular FA Cup game against Torquay United, it was announced over the public address system mid-game that a taxi – “said to have been requested by a disgruntled Carlisle fan” – was waiting for him. Cruise was only 19 at the time, and one can only imagine how detrimental that incident was for his confidence and self-esteem. The incident occurred during what would be his final game for Carlisle.

I spoke to some Carlisle supporters ( @Paddock_Blue , @TheCumbriansNet , and @joncolman ) about what they remember from Cruise’s time with The Blues, and let’s just say that the reports were hardly glowing.

New first choice left-back Sean McDaid had succumbed to knee injuries – which would ultimately ruin his career – so we needed short-term cover. Greg Abbott looked to the loan market, and at the time, I think people were quite intrigued by the signing. He got a fairly gentle introduction – his debut came in a 6-0 FA Cup win over minnows Tipton Town – and he also contributed to victories in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Coming from Arsenal, the general consensus was that he must have something about him but the reality was that he did not. He seemed technically sound, was likeable enough, and was certainly less haphazard than another left-back who briefly appeared for United that winter, Miguel Comminges. Nonetheless, his unmemorable Carlisle career was defined by a few mistakes, 2 or 3 horror performances, one at home to lowly Dagenham & Redbridge in the league, and then another against Torquay – where his sixth minute slip allowed Eunan O’Kane to score the decisive goal – clearly damaged his confidence, and his failure to adapt to the hectic pace of League One.

Cruise became a free agent in the summer of 2011, but it would take a year for him to find a new club. The England youth international had trials at Sampdoria , Scunthorpe United, and the New England Revolution , but he eventually joined Torquay – the team whom he was facing when the ‘taxi taunt’ occurred – on a one-year deal in June 2012.

It was an opportunity for him to relaunch his career. Two calf operations had prohibited Thomas from playing much football in the 18 months following his Arsenal release, but he was determined to prove himself at the professional level. After all, we are talking about someone who collected 18 caps for England at youth level.

He would go on to make 64 appearances for Torquay over three seasons. Nonetheless, speaking to Gulls supporters ( @TORQUAYTALK , and @TalkingTorquay ) it is clear that much like his loan spell at Carlisle, Cruise failed to impress during what was clearly a difficult time for the club.

We were all quite excited when we signed him not just because of his name, but he came with a good pedigree. He had made a Champions League appearance and had a trial with Sampdoria before joining us, so we thought we had ourselves a steal. However, it was clear quickly he was not all he was cracked up to be. To be fair to him, he joined us when we were in a bad way. Our manager at the time, Martin Ling, suffered from mental health issues and left us the February after. We brought in Alan Knill to replace him, but it was just a downward spiral for the club from there.

He looked like he had something about him at times, but he was too fragile and very rarely stood out as a proper player despite his obvious technical ability. He lacked any aggression, was often simply too passive, and after a run of poor form, his confidence was completely shot. Although he did make 64 appearances for us, that was often because we had no one else there, he was very rarely considered a genuine first-choice player. If he had joined at a different time, then it may have been different.

He left us after our first full season in the Conference. We had a number of bang average players on way too much money and the club needed to cut the wage bill fast and Cruise was one of the victims. He had struggled with knee injuries while playing for us, but his terrible form didn’t help his case. Towards the end of his time at the club, he was actually dropped for a 17-year-old academy graduate called Levi Ives. You could blame factors such as dreadful management and a toxic atmosphere off the pitch, but the reality was that he was not good enough.

Cruise was in familiar position following his release in April 2015, but rather than patiently wait for a new club as he had done three years prior, he decided to take the road less travelled. One that he had prepared for himself. Knowing how unpredictable and short the career of a professional footballer can be, Cruise worked towards his Advanced Diploma in Accounting whilst he was still at Torquay. It would seem that he is now a fully trained accountant, but this is where the trail goes cold.

Unlike my features on Calen Carr and James Shea , I was unable to get in touch with Thomas for this piece, despite my best efforts. Furthermore, finding information on his whereabouts (besides news about his new profession) was incredibly difficult. I blame the name.

Cédric Evina had not spoken to Thomas in years, so could not help me, while former academy captain Jay Emmanuel-Thomas did not know much either. This is the email I received from Emmanuel-Thomas’ agent, Lara Southworth, in my request for information;

"As far as Jay knows, Thomas is living in the north of England.  He is married with a family and living a normal, happy life."

It was at this point, that I had to call it a day. I held this piece for the best part of two weeks hoping that someone would respond to my requests with new information, but alas, I felt that there was little point in waiting any longer. It would seem that Thomas is happy being out of the spotlight, and there will always be more stories to tell.

Next. Arsenal: One Way to Play Wilfried Zaha Game. dark

Thomas Cruise was able to live his childhood dream of being a professional footballer, nonetheless, it is clear that he struggled away from N5. He was not the first, and he certainly will not be the last. Sometimes, injuries become too difficult to overcome, and technical ability only gets you so far.

My sincerest thanks to @Paddock_Blue , @TheCumbriansNet , @joncolman , @TORQUAYTALK , and @TalkingTorquay for their contributions to this piece.

England squad get Tom Cruise team talk after special Top Gun: Maverick screening as Red Arrows plan iconic display over Wembley ahead of Euro 2020 final against Italy

The England team received a very special message from Hollywood legend Tom Cruise on the eve of their Euro 2020 final against Italy.

But manager Gareth Southgate, ever the professional, missed it for another, far more important film... of their opponents.

Top Gun star and Hollywood icon Tom Cruise joined the England team via video call ahead of the Euro 2020 final

The Three Lions were treated on Friday night to an exclusive screening of Cruise’s latest blockbuster, highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which isn’t released until next month.

And after watching the movie at St George’s Park, the England players were then surprised by an appearance from star of the film, Cruise, himself.

The American star dialled in on FaceTime to speak with the team ahead of Sunday’s huge final, with the pressure of a nation and generations of hurt on their shoulders.

Cruise was one of the lucky ones to make it onto UEFA's VIP guest list for the Euro 2020 final

Cruise was actually a special guest of UEFA's at Wembley and was seen in the stands bumping fists with David Beckham in the stands as they celebrated Luke Shaw's opener.

You can imagine the team talk they would have been give by Cruise ahead of the game, but nobody knows exactly what was said, as the entire team were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements banning them from talking about the yet to be released movie and their conversation with Cruise.

But it is understood the squad were understandably thrilled about speaking to one of the biggest stars on the planet, who is a good friend of former England captain Beckham.

Kane and Sterling have been unstoppable for England - can they guide the Three Lions to a first major tournament win since 1966?

“The lads had a preview of a film that is due out and also had Tom dial in to speak to them," Southgate revealed.

“I would imagine it was all quite surreal. They were very fortunate, although they all had to sign a form.

“I was in another meeting watching videos on Italy – which is another story - but I think they all enjoyed the experience.

“They've had a good week really, with Ed Sheeran and Tom Cruise - that's the life of an England footballer.”

Ipswich Town fan and Grammy Award winning singer-songwriting superstar Sheeran put on a special gig for the England squad last month before the tournament began.

He has since been spotted at a number of the Three Lions’ matches at Euro 2020 and is likely to be back in the Wembley stands for the final.

That’s not the only Top Gun experience the England players will have before the final, though, with the Red Arrows set to perform one of their iconic displays over the Wembley roof ahead of kick-off.

The RAF display team will take off from an air base in Bournemouth at around 7:27pm and will be due to fly over the stadium shortly at 7:48pm - 12 minutes before the game is due to begin.

Tom Cruise is ready for some football. And for some jet fighter action.

CBS Sports and the NFL married Cruise and footage from the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick into the AFC Championship tease that aired leading into the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs. The clip was headlined, “The Time is Now.”

Cruise likened the game to the determination to be the best that it takes to be a top gun. The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 Top Gun  (which came out before both game quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes were born) is set for release on May 27 from Paramount.

30 years old this week: Tom Cruise's 'All The Right Moves'

  • Steve Spears

All The Right Moves might be the best football movie of the '80s. Maybe one of the top football movies of any decade, outside of Rudy . Oh, and the one about the field-goal-kicking mule. And Tom Cruise 's opus to high school football turns 30 years old this week.

Released Oct. 21, 1983, All The Right Moves follows Stefen Djordjevic (Cruise), a Pennsylvania steel-town high schooler who's gifted both in the classroom and the gridiron. He has an understanding girlfriend (Lea Thompson) and an impatient coach (Craig T. Nelson), and all of them would love to book the next bus outta town for better opportunities. If Stefen could just put a nice showing in the big Walnut Heights game, he'll be set. Knock on wood.

Sadly, the movie has only a 53 percent "fresh" rating at Rottentomatoes.com. It's criticized for being sugar-coated and cliche-ridden, but if you ask me, it's still one of the most honest potrayals of high school football. Here are five things you probably didn't know about the movie.

5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ALL THE RIGHT MOVES:

1. The town of "Ampipe" is fictional (based on the equally fictional American Pipe and Steel Co.), but it's probably based on Ambridge, a real town just northwest of Pittsburgh, which is based on American Bridge Co.

2. The uniforms and team colors of Cruise's team -- the Ampipe Bulldogs -- are the actual uniforms from Ferndale Area High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where the film was made.

3. Thompson and Cruise went undercover to high schools to research their roles. Cruise was discovered almost immediately -- he was recognized from the movie Taps . Thompson survived much longer, got asked out on dates and was even caught smoking.

4. The coach of the rival team Walnut Heights was an actual football coach in the area and served as technical consultant on the film.

5. The soundtrack is largely forgettable. The main theme song -- All The Right Moves -- was performed by Jennifer Warnes and Chris Thompson. Warnes is probably best known for Up Where We Belong , her duet with Joe Cocker from An Officer and a Gentleman.

Did Tom Cruise Play Sports?

26 july 2022.

If you’re one of the millions of people who are seen “Top Gun: Maverick,” you know that Tom Cruise is a pretty athletic guy.

If you’re a Cruise fan, you know just how athletic Cruise is, especially when it comes to doing the daring stunts that are part and parcel of his movies.

But those same stunts raise an obvious question-is Tom Cruise really an athlete, or is it all just movie magic? The answers will surprise you in at least a couple of ways, so let’s explore.

High School Hero

Back when he was in high school, Tom Cruise was fairly serious about sports. He played soccer, wrestled, and ran track, and he was slated to be a star middle linebacker for his high school football team in Glen Ridge, New Jersey when he was caught drinking beer before a game and bounded from the squad.

That kind of risky business didn’t seem to hurt Cruise’s career in the long haul, though. The one big obstacle Cruise faced when he was younger was dyslexia, which he hide the fact that he was functionally illiterate from his classmates.

Even Cruise himself didn’t know at that point that his athleticism would play a prominent role in his success as a movie star.

A lot of that was about his stunning handsomeness, but Cruise worked hard to hone his skills as an actor, and using his athleticism to his advantage was a major part of that.

The Ultimate Athletic Action Hero

It was during his roles in action movies that Cruise’s athleticism truly began to emerge. He’s always taken care of himself, but he quickly acquired a reputation as a daredevil when he insisted on doing his own dangerous stunts.

Many of those stunts are legendary, especially the ones that have him leaping from buildings in the “Mission Impossible” series. Cruise may not be a competitive athlete on the professional level, but every stunt man who’s ever done what cruise is done knows the strength and speed that goes into those kinds of stunts.

There’s serious danger involved, too. Taking a hit in the NFL or a charge in the NBA might hurt, but those kinds of hits are rarely life-threatening.

The stunts in the movies are. Plenty of safeguards are put in place, but stuntmen live with broken bones as a factor of life, and Tom Cruise took on the same kind of risks they did.

Cruising Speed

The one element of Tom Cruise’s athleticism that has come under scrutiny recently is his speed, especially now that Cruise has turned 60.

Based on his role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” several media outlets have done some probing interviews about the speed Cruise has shown in his most recent movies.

Those interviews were revealing, to say the least. It was Cruise himself who brought attention to his speed when he finally joined Instagram, and his self-assessment steered clear of obvious choices like “three-time Oscar nominee,” or “sold $10 billion worth of movie tickets.” Instead, Cruise cited himself as an actor and producer, but the tag for those two jobs was shocking: “been running in movies since 1981.”

ESPN was curious about this, of course, so they asked some telling questions to some very high-level track stars to analyze Cruise’s technique.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was one of those who analyzed Cruise’s style, and while she said that certain things he said were designed to make him look good on film, his stiff but disciplined running style actually wasn’t bad at all.

But track stars like Joyner-Kersee weren’t the only ones who broke down Cruise’s style. Given the vagaries of modern video technology, various video experts have clocked Cruise at just over 15 mph when he runs, and Cruise himself has said he’s hit 17 mph.

The final words were put in by marathoner Will Blase, who claims that Cruise might be the fastest actor ever to hit the silver screen. He broke down Cruise’s speed against that of Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump,” Harrison Ford’s sprint to escape from a builder in “Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Stallone’s staircase spring in “Rocky II,” and Cruise won the imaginary gold medal.

Don’t expect Cruise to stop going for the gold, athletically speaking. His ambition doesn’t seem to have diminished much at all, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him running for his life and for big box office receipts-in whatever movie he decides to do next.

Sunday night's Euro 2020 final was played out in front of 65,000 supporters at Wembley stadium, including royalty and Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

After Luke Shaw's opening goal, an overjoyed Prince George was pictured celebrating jubilantly with his father Prince William as Wembley erupted.

But there were more notable faces in the crowd, namely Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.

TV cameras panned to Cruise, who was sitting alongside former England captain and Manchester United legend David Beckham, up in the stands in the first half of the match.

Why is Tom Cruise at England v Italy Euro 2020 final?

He is a high-profile England supporter.

Cruise's attendance at the match comes after he sent a message to the England team ahead of their Euro 2020 final against Italy, wishing them luck as they bid to win their first piece of silverware since the 1966 World Cup.

In fact, 59-year-old Cruise tried to phone England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the tournament finale, but the Three Lions boss missed the call as he was studying videos of the Italians ahead of the encounter.

The squad, meanwhile, were treated to a private Friday night screening of Cruise's latest film, Top Gun: Maverick.

"They were very fortunate," Southgate said of the team's message from Cruise. "I don’t know whether they’re supposed to have said this because they all had to sign a (non-disclosure) form.

"They had a preview of a film that’s due out further down the line and they had Tom dial in to speak to them which was, I would imagine, quite surreal.

"I was in a meeting watching videos of Italy but that’s another story.

"I think they all thoroughly enjoyed that experience and, yeah, they’ve had a good week, really. Ed Sheeran (who performed a private gig earlier in the tournament), Tom Cruise – the life of an England footballer."

What is Tom Cruise's net worth?

Cruise's net worth is believed to be around £432million, according to Parade.

Cruise had earlier been seen in the Wimbledon men's single final between Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berretini, which was won by the Serb.

The 21 best football movies of all time

The countdown is on for the super bowl and for our list of the greatest gridiron films ever, including jerry maguire , brian's song , and yes, obviously rudy.

Clockwise from bottom left: Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard (Paramount Pictures/Courtesy of Getty Images), Sylvester Stallone and Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday (Getty Images), Sean Astin in Rudy (Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images), Billy Bob Thornton and Garrett Hedlund in Friday Night Lights (Universal Pictures)

Sure, you can prep for Super Bowl Sunday like everybody else, by stocking up on seven-layer dip, nachos, wings, and overpriced microbrews. Or you can ready yourself the way film fans have been doing it for decades—by digging into Hollywood’s extensive catalog of football movies. Which is where The A.V. Club comes in, by providing you with a handy playbook to guide you through Hollywood’s greatest gridiron offerings. Our list of football films you need to know (and to watch, if you haven’t seen them) includes two titles starring Tom Cruise, a hilarious Adam Sandler comedy, a silent movie classic, and a ’7os TV movie that still makes grown men weep. So before you settle in to watch the actual game—and all those heavily hyped, high-priced commercials—spend some time with these cinematic trips to the end zone.

21 . All the Right Moves (1983)

All the Right Moves , a key early stepping stone in Tom Cruise’s path to stardom, finds the future Top Gun hero in the role of Stefan—the star player on his high school football team in small-town Pennsylvania. When an argument with his coach (Craig T. Nelson) derails his chances of using his football career to get out of this dying town, Stefan must figure out a way to get back in the spotlight. It’s interesting to watch Cruise’s mega-wattage charisma in its nascent stages, as the actor adds real depth to his two-dimensional role. Michael Chapman’s solid direction, and a compelling ensemble led by Nelson, help round out a formative film on Cruise’s CV.

20 . Black Sunday (1977)

Director John Frankenheimer’s Black Sunday is arguably the closest sports movie fans will get to seeing “ Die Hard at a football game.” Based on the Thomas Harris ( The Silence Of The Lambs ) novel of the same name, Bruce Dern stars as the psychotic Michael Lander, a Goodyear blimp pilot who plots with a terrorist group for an attack over a Super Bowl stadium that, if successful, will result in the deaths of thousands—including the president of the United States. Jaws ’ Robert Shaw plays the hard-boiled Israeli operative struggling to stop Lander and save his would-be victims from disaster. The late Frankenheimer effortlessly milks this somewhat hard-to-swallow premise for all the nail-biting tension it’s worth, and then some. Black Sunday and Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout would make for a great pre-game double-feature.

19 . Invincible (2006)

Football movies don’t get much more “feel good” than Invincible , an underrated 2006 entry starring Mark Wahlberg as (what else?) an underdog football prospect whose perseverance and resilience rivals that of his hometown, Philadelphia. Set in 1976, Wahlberg plays Vince Papale—a former college football player who gets a second chance at the pros with the Eagles and coach Dick Vermeil ( Greg Kinnear ). Wahlberg’s likable portrayal of Papale is full of unflappable determination and bursts of relatable vulnerability. Older than the other rookies, Papale has to fight twice as hard to earn his spot—but he has triple the heart of his competition. The once-and-future Dirk Diggler’s earnest commitment to the material is worth seeing.

18 . The Blind Side (2009)

Based on the 2006 book of the same name and starring Sandra Bullock in her Oscar-winning role, The Blind Side is a tearjerker about real-life football star Michael Oher and his heart-tugging relationship with his adoptive mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock), as Michael overcomes his impoverished trappings on his way to the NFL. The film took some justifiable heat for being a “White Savior” drama, but it remains a deep character drama and contains a stirring lead performance by Bullock, who channels every square inch of her considerable talent into one of the greatest performances of her career.

17 . Knute Rockne-All American (1940)

The story of Notre Dame’s most famous football hero (sorry, Rudy), Knute Rockne-All American captures Rockne’s inspiring rise from Norwegian immigrant to the player and coach who put Notre Dame’s football team on the map. Pat O’Brien stars as Rockne, and future President Ronald Reagan plays freshman halfback George “The Gipper” Gipp. All American is the quintessential football movie; the genre arguably wouldn’t exist the way it is today without it.

16 . Heaven Can Wait (1978)

While not a straightforward football movie, Heaven Can Wait certainly has a lot of football in it. The romantic comedy starring Warren Beatty tells the story of Joe Pendleton (Beatty), a quarterback primed to lead his team to Super Bowl stardom when he’s almost killed in an accident. An overeager angel sends Pendleton to heaven anyway. Not ready to die, Pendleton’s soul searches for a new body and a second chance. The film is notable among Beatty’s varied career not just for showcasing his exceptional comedic range, but for filming its ending during halftime of a Los Angeles Rams game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1977. Several real-life NFL players also appear in the movie, including Rams stars Deacon Jones , Les Josephson , and Charlie Cowan.

15 . Paper Lion (1968)

Paper Lion proves, once again, that football and comedy can be an entertaining combination. This 1968 film, based on writer George Plimpton’s 1966 non-fiction book of the same name, casts a pre- M*A*S*H Alan Alda as Plimpton and depicts the author’s tryout for a spot on the Detroit Lions. To paraphrase Roger Ebert in his three-star review: Paper Lion is not a timeless film about the sport, but it is a very funny piece of wish-fulfillment thanks in large part to Lawrence Roman’s witty, crackerjack script and Alda’s unparalleled comedic chops.

14 . The Waterboy (1998)

One of Adam Sandler’s biggest and earliest hits, The Waterboy finds the Saturday Night Live alum playing a water boy for a college football team who eventually gets his chance to leave the sidelines and play on the field. The movie is a predictable and dated affair, and Sandler’s Cajun shtick as the main character is very “YMMV” in terms of tolerance, but The Waterboy is a nostalgic favorite among both ’90s kids and football fanatics.

13 . Horse Feathers (1932)

More than 90 years after its release, the Marx Brothers’ Horse Feathers still (mostly) holds up. This pre-Code comedy is a sharp send-up of higher education and the premium it places on football. Groucho, Harpo, Chico and, yes, even Zeppo established a template that future sports comedies would use for decades: The football team is in a rut, and it’s up to a pair of outside-the-box newcomers—in this case, bootleggers—to turn things around. Fans of Old Hollywood should definitely add this classic to their watchlist.

12 . Concussion (2015)

Concussion , from writer-director Peter Landseman, is an underrated football drama that takes an unflinching look at the physical and mental consequences of playing in the NFL, something the league seems to largely ignore in real life. Will Smith stars as neuropathologist Bennet Omalu, the gifted doctor who discovered that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative disease that affects athletes—especially those in the NFL. Smith’s Omalu is soft-spoken but fiercely persistent as he battles NFL spin doctors and legal complications to force the league to acknowledge the health crisis it actively enables by trying to sweep it under the rug. Concussion takes some dramatic liberties with real-life events, but it’s all in service of providing a riveting chronicle of Dr. Omalu’s work to expose what happens when billionaires care more about their bottom line than the health of their players.

11 . Undefeated (2011)

One of the most engaging and in-depth football documentaries ever, the Academy Award-nominated Undefeated profiles an inner-city high school team’s inspiring pledge to reach their first-ever playoff game. Directors Daniel Lindsay and T.J. Martin are given carte blanche access to this likable team of underdogs, and their unobtrusive chronicle of their many ups and downs makes it impossible not to root for these players to see their dream made real. Undefeated emphasizes that it’s the little things—or, rather, the things that may seem of small value to outsiders—that mean the most to those willing to do what it takes to achieve success.

10 . The Longest Yard (1974)

Skip the 2005 remake starring Adam Sandler and go right to the original comedy classic. Headlined by the late, great Burt Reynolds as an ex-football star serving an 18-month stint in a Florida slammer, The Longest Yard follows the inmates’ efforts to win a game against the corrupt warden’s cherry-picked lineup of prison guards. The plot plays it fast and loose but the performances and exceptional, ground-level execution of the game is why The Longest Yard still ranks high on the list of must-see football movies.

9 . Remember The Titans (2000)

Remember The Titans , one of Denzel Washington and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s biggest winners, is a load-bearing column of sports moviedom. Based on a true story, one centered on the timely topic of racism, director Boaz Yakin’s four-quadrant hit follows a Virginia high school football coach, Herman Boone (Washington), as he works to integrate his team in 1971. Written by the late Gregory Allen Howard (who also co-wrote Michael Mann’s Ali ), the screenplay not only provides the foundation for an exceptional sports movie, it builds upon it with the message that no matter the color of your skin, the most worthwhile path to success is one where we all work together.

8 . North Dallas Forty (1979)

Very loosely based on the real exploits of the 1970s Dallas Cowboys, North Dallas Forty is a harsh satire of the game and a football movie classic. It centers on jaded wide receiver Phil Elliot (Nick Nolte) and his inability to accept, or even work with, the whole “there’s no I in ‘team’” thing. Director Ted Kotcheff doesn’t shy away from the influence that sex, painkillers, and alcohol have on Elliot and his teammates on and off the field, which is part of North Dallas Forty ’s unvarnished charm. Once a world-weary Elliot realizes that both the party and his career may be careening to an end simultaneously, the movie finds ways to make this sobering realization all the more endearing. Unevenly paced but brutally perceptive, North Dallas Forty offers a fascinating (and funny) look at the hard truths and painful realities of being a pro football player.

7 . Jerry Maguire (1996)

Writer-director Cameron Crowe’s biggest box office success, Jerry Maguire is equal parts sports movie and Billy Wilder dramedy. Tom Cruise’s Jerry Maguire is a slick sports agent struggling with his rediscovered conscience in an industry devoid of one. His romance with his big-hearted secretary, Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger, breaking through in a big way), and his relationship with Dorothy’s son, Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki), helped make the movie a crowd-pleasing hit. While Cruise delivers an all-timer performance, the movie’s real MVP is Cuba Gooding, Jr., who won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell. With a chip on his shoulder almost as big as the deficit in his bank account, Rod is the only client Jerry has left—and Gooding invests this relationship with endless charisma and energy. The way Rod goes from “Show Me the Money!” greed to his tearful, humbling mastery of “the Qwan” by the end of the movie is arguably the film’s greatest achievement.

6 . The Freshman (1925)

Silent cinema star Harold Lloyd plays the titular character in The Freshman , a football comedy that boasts Criterion Collection status. Lloyd plays an eccentric student who, in a storyline that feels like a precursor to The Waterboy , serves as the water boy for his college football team. Our beleaguered hero finds happiness once he accepts who he really is and moves past caring about what his fellow students think.

5 . Brian’s Song (1971)

Brian’s Song   tells the true story of the friendship between Brian Piccolo (James Caan) and Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams), two rookie running backs for the Chicago Bears who are forever changed by Piccolo’s cancer diagnosis. Williams’ Sayers isn’t afraid to be emotional with his teammates about the loss of his friend, making this hit TV movie one of the iconic portrayals of male friendship and the bond it forges. The fact that, in the film and in real life, Piccolo and Sayers were the first interracial roommates in the entire NFL (don’t forget, we’re talking the ‘60s here) only adds to the importance of this classic tearjerker.

4 . Any Given Sunday (1999)

Oliver Stone’s intensity served him well as director and co-writer of this gritty, hard-R, warts-and-all drama about a fictional professional football league. Any Given Sunday takes on some of the uglier aspects of gridiron life, so it’s not a surprise that the NFL wouldn’t allow Stone to use any actual team logos or stadiums. The film features an impressive ensemble headlined by Al Pacino, who plays a respected veteran coach on the downslope of his career and needs a Hail Mary to get his team back on track. With a past-his-prime QB (Dennis Quaid) trying for a comeback that his body can’t handle, Pacino’s Coach D’Amato is forced to turn to hot-shot quarterback Willie Beaman (an exceptional Jamie Foxx). Team owner Cameron Diaz adds considerable spark to the team’s conflict-rich journey and Stone approaches it all with a cynical, kinetic lens. The bone-crunching violence of the football sequences is unlike any we’ve seen before, as Stone takes a “war is hell” approach to one of America’s most popular (and, he argues, morally corrupt) sports.

3 . Friday Night Lights (2004)

The inspiration behind Peter Berg and Jason Katims’ fan-favorite NBC show, Friday Night Lights the movie (directed by Berg) brings a similar blue-collar aesthetic to the big emotional stakes at play in a small Texas town obsessed with high school football. When Permian High School running back James “Boobie” Miles (Derek Luke) suffers a life-altering injury, the inspiring Coach Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) must find his replacement while struggling with the importance that the town of Odessa, Texas, places on every Friday night matchup. For too many Odessa residents, football is either all they have or all they think they deserve. It’s up to Gaines to show them, and his players, that there’s more to life than a perfect spiral and Berg captures the small-town drama therein with an unflinching and, at times, heartwarming, verisimilitude. Future FNL TV cast member Connie Britton also stars.

2 . We Are Marshall (2006)

Based on a true story, We Are Marshall is, refreshingly, less about classic football movie tropes and more focused on how a tragedy impacts both the players and the small community of loyal friends and family that supported them. When a plane crash claims the lives of members of the Marshall University football team and some of its fans, the team’s new coach (Matthew McConaughey) and his surviving players try to keep the football program alive and rebuild the team. Directed with a surprising amount of restraint from the usually flashy McG, Marshall is equal parts rousing and heartbreaking—with a grounded, moving performance from McConaughey and a splendid supporting cast that includes Marvel’s Anthony Mackie and Mad Men ’s January Jones.

1 . Rudy (1993)

Rudy is the ultimate underdog story and a quintessential football movie. Based on a true story, the film features a career-best performance from Sean Astin in the title role, and early performances from Vince Vaughn and future Iron Man director Jon Favreau. Rudy grew up in a small town where most people ended up working at the local steel mill, but he wanted to play football at Notre Dame. There were only a couple of problems. His grades were a little low, his athletic skills were poor, and he was only half the size of the other players. But Rudy refused to give up and his drive and can-do spirit won the hearts of moviegoers, whether they loved football or not. The result is one of the all-time great feel-good sports movies.

Tom Cruise FaceTimed the England team ahead of the Euros final against Italy, Harry Kane has revealed.

The actor – who has been filming the forthcoming instalment of Mission: Impossible in the UK – was in attendance at yesterday night’s final, which saw England lose to Italy in penalties.

“Obviously we have had ex-players and people get in touch,” the England captain told BBC Radio5Live ahead of the match. “We actually had Tom Cruise get in touch yesterday evening, you get everyone who loves football.”

The 27-year-old forward added that the team were also given the opportunity to stream one of Cruise’s films on Friday (9 July).

“Yes, we were fortunate enough to have a watch of one of his films, so I think he was over here in the UK and he just dialled in and FaceTimed us just to wish us the best as a group so that was nice of him.”

England’s manager Gareth Southgate , however, missed out on the call.

Speaking to The Independent , Southgate said of the team’s message from Cruise: “They were very fortunate. I don’t know whether they’re supposed to have had said this because they all had to sign a [non-disclosure] form.

“They had a preview of a film that’s due out further down the line and they had Tom dial in to speak to them, which was, I would imagine, quite surreal.”

Southgate added: “I was in a meeting watching videos of Italy but that’s another story.”

Following an early goal from Luke Shaw, the England team had their Euros hopes dashed last night (11 July) after an Italy equaliser in the second half led to extra time and penalties.

Although neither Kane nor Southgate revealed which film the team were given an early viewing of, Cruise’s forthcoming movies include Top Gun: Maverick and the seventh and eighth entries in the Mission: Impossible series.

'Top Gun' star Tom Cruise ready to fly again as co-star Jennifer Connelly says 'I'll be there'

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It's been 38 years since the Hollywood movie classic " Top Gun " premiered, and Tom Cruise is still in fighting shape.

Ahead of the film's anniversary on May 16, the 61-year-old actor took to Instagram to share a series of photos that feature behind-the-scenes snapshots of him and various cast members on the set of the original film and the 2022 sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick ."

And Cruise proved he's still in action-hero shape while enjoying a beach day this week in Mallorca, Spain. Cruise, who has been filming the latest "Mission: Impossible" film , flashed his toned abs while taking a dip in the ocean.

‘MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE' STAR TOM CRUISE DEFIES AGE WITH DANGEROUS STUNTS: EXPERTS

In his Instagram post, Cruise wrote in a caption, "It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of ‘Top Gun.’ To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you."

Fans were quick to express their enthusiasm.

"Thank you so much for saving the film industry," one follower commented.

"The fact that you guys managed to make the most amazing sequel ever two years ago, honoring Top Gun, is incredible!" another wrote.

In March, Jerry Bruckheimer – the producer for both the original "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick" – revealed that a third installment may be in the works.

"We're working on ['Top Gun 3']," he told People magazine. "We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he's a very in-demand actor, and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see."

While it's up in the air, "Top Gun: Maverick" actress Jennifer Connelly , who portrayed Penelope "Penny" Benjamin in the film, is on board if it does happen.

"I'll be there. I'm ready," Connelly told "Entertainment Tonight."

"I haven't seen anything," she said. "I had a casual chat with my friend, Joe Kosinski, who directed it, who I worked with twice now. I'm his biggest fan. I think he's so great. [I talked to him] about the possibility of it, but I don't know anything concrete."

One thing's for sure, if "Top Gun 3" happens, Cruise is more than ready for it.

It's no secret Cruise has remained in great physical shape throughout the years due to his demanding film schedule and his desire to perform most of his own stunts.

According to Christine Haas , entertainment PR expert and CEO of Haas Media, Cruise's ability to maintain such a strong physique has to do with his strong "discipline."

"Tom Cruise is notorious for his physical fitness and overall rigorous discipline," Haas told Fox News Digital last year. "After speaking with a director who worked very closely with Tom Cruise over the past decade, it was very apparent that he has a high level of energy and is consistently auditing his behavior and actions daily with the help of his Scientology team. This level of demand and drive allows him to defy age and perform physically demanding stunts, leading to the consistent development of a masterful personal brand."

"I believe he is one of very few celebrities who can continue with these types of risks because of the intense physical and mental protocol he lives by ... without that consistent training, it would be far more dangerous. Like someone training for a marathon, he stays prepared instead of allowing his fitness level to regress and expose him to injuries," she said.

"Top Gun" was the top-grossing movie of 1986 by a wide margin. The movie was so popular that 46 million people in North America bought tickets that year. The enduring popularity of "Top Gun" inspired a hit sequel 36 years later. "Top Gun: Maverick" proved to be the biggest box-office smash of 2022.

"Maverick" became the most-watched film in the world during its opening weekend release on the Paramount+ streaming platform.

The Joseph Kosinski-directed film stars Cruise alongside a long list of Hollywood celebrities, including Miles Teller , Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer. "Maverick" also received numerous accolades, such as two Golden Globes nominations for best motion picture of a drama and best original song.

Fox News Digital's Kerry J. Byrne, Phillip Nieto, Emily Trainham and Larry Fink contributed to this post.

What do Robert di Niro and Tom Cruise do with Argentina and world cup dreams?

“i choose to believe’: argentinian fans look for magic coincidences to say messi’s men will win world cup.

tom cruise favourite football team

Let’s start with Robert di Niro and Tom Cruise. The fans and even the Argentine media have been talking about how di Niro was in Argentina in 1986 to shoot for the movie “The Misson”. Argentina won that ’86 world cup. In 2022, di Niro returned to Argentina again to shoot for the OTT series “Nothing”.

What about Tom Cruise, eh? Well, in May 1986, his Top Gun was released. Now, in May 2022, his Top Gun: Maverick is out. On such flimsy coincidences do the world cup rests.

tom cruise favourite football team

El Grafico hasn’t missed the moustaches either. “The two times that Argentina won the World Cup, the President of the Country had moustaches. 1978 Jorge Rafael Videla and 1986 Raúl Ricardo Alfonsin. The current president Alberto Fernández also uses it.”

In 1986, Diego Maradona reached the final with 5 goals. Same tally as you know who, now.

What about the hand of god? El Grafico again: “In the quarterfinals of 1986 after the elimination by penalties of Brazil, in the match against Argentina, Diego Maradona touched a ball with his hand (goal against the English). In 2022 Lionel Messi handled the ball with his hand against the Netherlands.”

Festive offer

Just like Pakistan cricket fans arched back to the 1992 Miracle narrative during the T20 world cup final, especially when the team stunningly came back from being all but out of it with a series of coincidences with 1992 campaign, Argentina too have breathing on similar lines.

Let’s start with the jersey that France’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will be wearing for the final: A yellow jumper. Turns out the Netherlands goalie Jan Jongbloed and the German Harald Schumacher both wore that colour jumpers in the finals of the the 1978 and 1986 finals that Argentina won.

The polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be officiating the final between Argentina and Netherlands. What did the Argentine fans find there? El Grafico explains. “The Pole is 41 years old and was born on January 7, 1981.  The curiosity of the coincidence occurs with Romualdo Arppi Filho, referee of the final that Argentina beat Germany 3-2 in the 1986 World Cup.The Brazilian was also born on January 7, 1939, the same day as Marcinak but 42 years before.”

There is more. The fans had also spotted how EA sports in their promotion ahead of the world cup showed Argentina winning it. The fans have pointed in glee how in the previous world cup promotions, EA Sports has been calling it right sine 2010.

Last time Morocco progressed out of the world cup was in 1986. Guess who won then? Argentina. And now Morocco have again gone beyond group stages. Last time Canada featured in a world cup , before the current version, was in 1986.

  • India could lose a Paris Olympics quota as one boxer accused of anti-doping rule violation
  • Can Sunrisers Hyderabad still finish in the top-2?

The fans have also pointed out how Australia were defeated in the last 16 in 2006 by Italy, who were the winners that year. This time it was Argentina who knocked out Australia in the last 16. The fans have also been mentioning how last time Brazil were knocked out in the quarters in penalty shootouts was in, yes you guessed it right, 1986.

It’s Elijo Creer time!

Tom Cruise Celebrates 38 Years Since the Original Top Gun : 'It's Incredible to Look Back'

'Top Gun' producer Jerry Bruckheimer told PEOPLE in March that Tom Cruise has been pitched an idea for a third 'Top Gun' movie that "he liked"

Paramount/Kobal/Shutterstock

Tom Cruise is celebrating nearly four decades of taking to the skies.

On May 13, the actor-producer, 61, shared photos from the set of 1986's original Top Gun on Instagram in honor of the film's 38th anniversary.

The photos show behind-the-scenes pictures of him on set with the movie's director Tony Scott , who died in 2012 at 68, as well as a photo of him sitting with the film's cast in its air-hangar-turned-classroom set.

One throwback photo shows the actor smiling during a conversation with producer Jerry Bruckheimer . Another shows Cruise filming 2022's Top Gun: Maverick as he stares at the famous still of him and costar Val Kilmer shaking hands at the end of the original movie.

"It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun ," he wrote in a caption. "To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you."

Cruise's original Top Gun movie was an immediate hit when it hit theaters May 16, 1986. The movie follows his character Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he attends the U.S. Navy's Fighter Weapons School, better known as Top Gun. The movie costarred Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis and Kilmer, 64, as Maverick's chief rival and eventual ally Tom "Iceman" Kazansky."

Top Gun was the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office that year. It won one Academy Award , for Best Original Song, at the 59th Oscars in 1987, among four total nominations.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Decades later, Cruise regrouped with producer Bruckheimer, 80, to make a sequel, Top Gun: Maverick , which similarly captured audiences' imaginations as the highest-grossing movie of 2022 domestically and made $1.5 billion worldwide. The sequel sees Maverick return to Top Gun to train a new generation of pilots — including characters portrayed by Miles Teller and Glen Powell , among others — for new missions with the Navy.

Many have speculated about the franchise's future given the smash success of Maverick . The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that a third Top Gun movie was in development . In March, producer Bruckheimer told PEOPLE he is working on putting a new entry together.

" We pitched Tom a story he liked . But he's a very in-demand actor and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see," he said.
