Titanic 2: Everything You Need to Know

titanic cruise ship

Just when you thought the concept had been sunk forever ... Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his long-cherished dream to build Titanic II. After a number of false starts, abandoned plans and a lot of talk, Palmer has once again announced plans to replicate the doomed liner, with a planned launch date of 2027.

Hmm. We've been here before – in 2013, when the plans were first announced; then in 2018, with a planned launch of 2022. But then the pandemic happened, and all plans were put on ice, again.

At a news conference at the Sydney Opera House, Palmer (the fifth-richest man in Australia), stated: "We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have re-engaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic II to life. Let the journey begin."

Here's what we know about the supposed return of this legendary vessel.

On This Page

Will titanic ii actually be built, what is the history of titanic ii, titanic ii info and stats, titanic ii itinerary, how much will a sailing on titanic ii cost.

The plans to build T2 are very similar to previous ones, in that the ship will be an exact replica of the original (though with more lifeboats and a design that complies with all current safety regulations). To that end, according to cruise blogger Dave Monk , the project is backed by Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin.

Other global partners are said to include V.Ships Leisure and Swedish marine architecture and interior design company Tillberg Design.

In April 2012, Clive Palmer launched a new company called Blue Star Line -- a nod to the company behind the original Titanic vessel, White Star Line -- to create a replica of the Titanic, to be named Titanic II. His hope is that people captivated by the Titanic's dramatic story would want to relive the ship's crossing.

Palmer's original news conference announcing the new-build coincided with the 100th anniversary of Titanic's doomed maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. The original RMS Titanic, built by Belfast-based Harland and Wolff, hit an iceberg and sank April 15, 1912, killing 1,503 passengers and crew.

Palmer's original plan was to set sail in 2016, but the build, which was supposed to begin in China in late 2013, never got off the ground due to financial disputes. Design work and wave testing on a model of the ocean liner reportedly started during fall 2018.

The new ocean liner will accommodate 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members, same as the original (but worth noting, significantly smaller than modern cruise ships, such as Icon of the Seas ). It will also, thankfully, be equipped with modern navigation tools, a wider hull for extra stability and yes, enough lifeboats and life vests for all.

The design features an identical cabin layout and the same architecture, interiors and luxury finishes as Titanic. Even the same class categories -- First, Second and Third -- will be made available. Passengers will even be encouraged to dress up in period costume – though Palmer has said this is not mandatory.

The new ship is slated to follow the same route as Titanic, carrying passengers across the Atlantic from Southampton, England, to New York City. According to reports, it will also offer World Cruises.

Fares have not been revealed, but chances are they'll be many times more than those from 1912, when third-class staterooms cost about $40, while first-class berths were $150 and the four Parlor suites topped out at $4,350.

MS Titanic 2 Review

Review of ms titanic 2.

MS Titanic 2 cruise ship is among the world's most-anticipated newbuild vessels on order , fascinating and inspiring millions worldwide. The Titanic replica is a stunning shipbuilding project to revive the ocean liner RMS Titanic . The idea for the new ship belongs to one of Australia's richest people - the mining magnate Clive Palmer.

On April 30, 2012, at a special press conference, Clive Palmer astonished and shocked the world by announcing his intention to build a full-scale replica of RMS Titanic. The new 56,000- GT ton ship will have 12 decks , 835 passenger staterooms and max capacity 2435 passengers plus 900 staff and crew.

The maiden voyage of Titanic II is planned to leave not from Southampton to New York (like the original liner), but from Jiangsu China (north of Shanghai ) to Dubai UAE . The new ship is intended to have modern passenger evacuation systems, digital navigation, latest radar systems and satellite communications, Helideck, top-deck gardens. Some relatives of passengers who died on RMS Titanic condemned the project to build a replica ship as insensitive. Blue Star Line was flooded with inquiries from potential customers, some offering up to GBP 640,000 to book Titanic 2's inaugural cruise.

The replica ship was expected to enter service in 2025.

IMPORTANT/NEWS : On March 13, 2024, at a press conference in Sydney NSW, Clive Palmer announced that his company Blue Star Line relaunched the shipbuilding project for Titanic II and plans to contract a shipyard in 2024 and start the project in 2025-Q1. For the delays he blamed the COVID crisis and assured that now he has "enough money to build the Titanic ten times over”. According to the billionaire, shipbuilding tenders would start in June (2024), with shipyard contracts signed by December. The project's estimated value would be between USD 0,5-1 billion. The Maiden Voyage is planned for 2027-Q1.

Titanic 2 ship construction and technical details

The new Titanic 2 ship was expected to be launched in 2018 - 106 years after the original ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The original plans of Blue Star Line were to launch the replica ship in April 2012, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

The project was first pushed back to 2016, and then to 2018. In September 2018, Clive Palmer confirmed in London England that construction works have been recommended and that the new liner will be nearly identical to RMS Titanic.

The new ship will be 883 ft (270 m) long, just 2 inches longer than the original and 12 ft (3,7 m) wider in order to increase stability. The shipbuilder is CSC Jinling in Nanjing (the capital city of Jiangsu province, central-eastern China). The company is state-owned and has a shipyard with two drydocks.

The boat's external look is an exact copy of the namesake, but as a 21-st century cruise vessel, it will be fitted with top-notch marine systems and equipment to ensure the industry's highest safety standards. The original steam plant (based on coal-fired boilers and steam engines) is replaced by a diesel powerplant and diesel-electric propulsion.

Next video animation shows RMS Titanic's powerplant and how it works.

The new Titanic ship is powered by four Wartsila diesel engines - two model 12V46F (12-cylinder, combined output 28,8 MW) plus two model 8L46F (8-cylinder gen-sets, combined output 19,2 MW), to total power output 48 MW. The propulsion system is based on 3x azimuth thrusters (360-degree rotating propellers) with combined output 30 MW.

The cruise ship has a 2-sectioned Navigation Bridge - forward (designed as an original replica) and aft (high technology wheelhouse). Marconi Room (communication facility on RMS Titanic) will be replicated, but not functional.

A new extra "Safety Deck" between original decks D and C is projected for 18 lifeboats and the safety chutes. It was not decided whether there will be garage or cars on-deck storage on board. New Titanic 2 ship will have all the safety certificates, including of course SOLAS. The building cost of the new liner was estimated to be around GBP 400 million.

Despite the planned maiden voyage in 2016, then in 2018, the vessel's construction didn't start. Blue Star Line's website was closed in 2018 and Clive Palmer abandoned its trademark. In 2017, Palmer was reported to be in ill health, suffering from memory lapses.

Decks and Cabins

Just as the original liner, Titanic 2 is planned to have 3 passenger classes, with the options of guests to sleep 6 nights in a same-class cabin or 2 nights in each class. Surprisingly, the 3rd class is attracting attention globally, being one of the most searched. Bathrooms are designed to be common (shared). There was an idea the ship to provide costumes (typical for each class cabins) complementary to all passengers.

Staterooms as amenities and decorations are planned to be very similar to those of RMS Titanic. The custom-made premium furniture will be made of high-quality woods (mahogany, walnut, sycamore, satinwood). First-Class cabins feature oak paneling. Second-Class cabins are with 2 beds (sofabed and fold-away). All staterooms have a wardrobe, dresser, seating area, steward call buttons.

New lower deck cabins are designed with modern amenities, but all other staterooms and all public premises (deck D and above) are precise recreations of the original ship.

The boat has 12 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins ( 835 passenger staterooms ).

Shipboard facilities

The new "Safety Deck" houses the Casino Lounge, Retail Shops, Hospital (Infirmary) and the 400-seat Theater (main show lounge). The company V-Ships Leisure is contracted to provide all onboard entertainment. Other planned facilities include 3 dining rooms (including First-Class Dining Saloon colored in white), a la carte restaurant, Cafe Parisien (patisserie), promenade deck (outdoor walking area encircling the ship), glass-dome covered Sun Deck (sunbathing area with 2 swimming pools, jacuzzis, changing cubicles, showers), Spa complex, Turkish baths, gymnasium, squash court, smoking lounge (blue and red-colored), several bars.

RMS Titanic's lounges and public spaces will be recreated with regard to the smallest details, including timber cladding walls, custom-made furniture, original artworks, light fittings, crystal chandeliers.

Shipboard dining

Onboard dining menus were developed by 68 chefs. Clive Palmer hosted gala events in NYC, London and Macau, offering VIP guests the 11-course dinner to be available at the new Titanic.

The list of those meals included:

  • Course 1: Oysters
  • Course 2: Consomme Olga
  • Course 3: Scottish Balik Salmon w Mousseline Sauce, Cucumber
  • Course 4: Saute of Chicken Lyonnaise, Vegetable Marrow Farcie, Parmentier Potatoes
  • Course 5: Aberdeen Angus Filet Mignons Lili

Godspeed to the new ship!

Clive Palmer's ship Titanic II

Creator of the Titanic 2 shipbuilding project is Clive Frederick Palmer (born March 26, 1954) - an Australian businessman, managing iron ore, nickel and coal holdings. Forbes Magazine estimated his wealth in January 2013 at USD 895 million.

In late-April 2012, Clive Palmer signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with one of China's largest shipbuilding companies - CSC Jinling - to construct a replica of RMS Titanic. Apart from his "Titanic 2" project, Palmer is also popular for another stunning plan - to create a Jurassic Park (with over 100 animatronic dinosaurs) in his resort in Coolum Beach - on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. In 2013, he formed the political party Palmer United, to compete for the federal election. He was a candidate for Division of Fairfax and won the election by 36 votes.

The replica cruise liner is planned to be 100% fireproof and with an ice-strengthened hull (ice-class PC6) to withstand icebergs and any weather extremes. The maritime industry's most advanced navigation equipment and all safety standards will be implemented.

"Titanic 2 Ship" project was initially joined by 3 big companies - Deltamarin (marine design, engineering, construction support), Tillberg Design Sweden ( cruise ship design , hotel and restaurant interiors) and Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (marine and shipping services, vessel classification society). The Titanic replica project was supported by an advisory board. The ship model was tested in Germany.

In the period 2015-2018, the project was suspended because Olive Palmer was in dispute with China's state-owned CITIC Group Corporation Ltd over the payment of royalties (hundreds of millions of US dollars) to Palmer-owned companies.

On October 16, 2018, Clive Palmer (current Chairman of the Paris -based "Blue Star Line" company) appointed his nephew Clive Mensink (former director of Queensland Nickel, Townsville QLD Australia ) as project's Director and company's CEO. He is responsible for staff recruitment, crew training and contractor negotiations. Company's headquarter office (in Paris France) is scheduled for opening in March 2019.

On October 30, 2018, as "Global Project Director" ("Titanic II") was announced Ms Baljeet Singh - lawyer and former Blue Star Line employee (Project Director in the period 2012-2015). Her job is to organize and attend planning and development meetings worldwide, liaising with USCG and US Gov agencies, overseeing the cruise company's European Director. Previously, she has worked for Clive Palmer as his mining company's Legal Director.

On December 17, 2018, was announced that V-Ships Leisure Ltd (a subsidiary of V-Group) is contracted as the ship management company for Titanic 2. V-Group is vessel management and support services provider, and industry's first with a dedicated cruise ship division (V-Ships Leisure).

On November 2, 2018, was announced that Deltmarin joins again the project. After reevaluating the project, in 2020 Deltmarin started to look for a shipbuilding yard as an alternative of the CSC Jinling Shipyard (China).

Titanic Ship Hotel in China (Romandisea Resort)

RMS Titanic inspired the Chinese company "Qixing Energy Investment Group" to build the famous ocean liner as a full-scale hotel ship replica. The order was placed with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group.

The Chinese group manages energy factories. It announced the ship hotel project as a theme park - officially called "Romandisea Seven Star International Cultural Tourism Resort". The resort park is sized 6,7 km2 (2,6 ml2). It is located in Da Ying county (Sichuan Province, China) and includes attractions like spa resort (with Turkish baths), artificial beach, amusement park (with medieval castle replicas, Venetian church replica, clock tower, large swimming pool). Next image shows the resort's amusement park.

However, the resort's main attraction is the Titanic ship-hotel in life-size. The project's cost was nearly CNY 1 billion (USD 165 million / GBP 105 million). The construction was scheduled to start in 2014 and the opening was initially set for 2016.

The full-size replica ship is located over 1200 km (745 ml) from the sea (approx 114 km / 70 ml from Chengdu ). It has length 269 m (882 ft) and width 28 m (92 ft). It also has original features - like theatre, ballroom, swimming pool, staterooms.

The hotel is floating (docked at Qi River / moored permanently within a reservoir). China's Titanic replica has a capacity for 1500 guests per day.

Qixing revealed the plan to rebuild the luxury ocean liner in January 2014. Tickets cost from CNY 3000 (GBP 350) per cabin per night. Suites cost from CNY 100,000 Yuan (GBP 11,580). The onboard entertainment includes Vegas-style show productions, ballroom dancing, pool deck parties, food menus with items from the original liner.

China's Titanic ship-hotel was designed in 2 years, with designer and technician services provided by USA and UK companies using the blueprints of RMS Olympic. The groundbreaking ceremony was in March 2015. The shipbuilder started manufacturing parts for the liner in May 2015. The Chinese Titanic had its keel-laying ceremony held on November 29, 2016. The event was attended by Lord Peter Mandelson (British politician). The vessel was re-scheduled for completion in 2018.

On-site assembly was planned for May 2015 but started in late-November 2016. In December 2017, hull's construction at the assembly site was completed. In September 2017, ship's construction was half complete, with built 6 out of all 9 decks. In January 2018 was announced that due to financial problems (increasing steel prices), the project is pushed back until 2019.

Around 50,000 tons of steel were used for its construction – more than the steel used for building an aircraft carrier. The replica ship includes many original features (Atrium's grand staircase, dining rooms, passenger cabins, swimming pool, boiler room 1, engine room, engine replica, mock-up steam engine) plus some new features (ballroom, cinema/theatre lounge). Originally was planned an audiovisual technology at ship's theatre to simulate the iceberg collision that resulted in the sinking, but the idea was later scrapped. Ship's disaster simulator allows "passengers" to feel the shipwreck atmosphere in 6D.

RMS Titanic

The maiden voyage of RMS Titanic started on April 10, 1912, at noon. The intended distance of the journey from England was approx 5350 km. Unfortunately, the liner didn't finish its first and only voyage. On April 14, after receiving 6 warnings for floating sea ice, the crew sighted an iceberg. Travelling near the max speed and unable to turn quickly enough, at 23:40 (ship time) Titanic struck the iceberg. In less than 10 seconds the hull was ripped opened (below the waterline) for a length of 91 m. Titanic sank 2 hours and 40 min later (at 2:20 ship time / 5:18 GMT) on April 15, 1912.

The tragic story of the Titanic ship is described in movies due to the fact that it combines money, ambition, love, courage and loss. The story was dramatized a few times. The first successful movie came in 1958, “A Night to Remember” (IMBD). It was an adaptation of Walter Lord’s book of the same name, published in 1955 and it was based on the stories of sixty-three survivors from the Titanic disaster. Without any doubt, the best movie, based on the Titanic story, was made by James Cameron. The movie “Titanic” (IMBD) came in 1997. The story focuses on the love between two fictional characters from different social classes: Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The exact number of passengers and casualties is still a matter of discussion. Some (mainly business magnates) cancelled their trip just before ship's departure. Some travelled under false names and were added twice in the casualties list. Some died soon after the disaster due to injuries, hypothermia and other illnesses. Officially, Titanic left Ireland with 2224 passengers. About 1514 of them died and 710 were saved.

Exhibitions of different objects from the liner can be seen in museums such as Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

Next YouTube video is dedicated on RMS Titanic's maiden (and last) voyage.

Next, you can watch "Did Titanic Really Sink" - representing the conspiracy theory that the sisterships RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic were “switched” in an insurance fraud scheme.

Unfortunately, in 2020, the intriguing and most provocative "Titanic Conspiracy Documentary" (2012 movie) was removed from YouTube.

Titanic II could set sail by 2022, following original route

By Christopher Brito

October 23, 2018 / 3:19 PM EDT / CBS News

A replica of the Titanic could embark on its maiden voyage by 2022 and eventually follow its doomed predecessor's original route from Southampton to New York, the company behind the "Titanic II" project says. Clive Palmer, an Australian businessman and chairman of Blue Star Line, announced the revival of the project in September following years of delays due to financial constraints.

The new Titanic, which will cost about $500 million to build, could hold 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members. Palmer told  Cruise Arabia and Africa that the launch date for the ship had been pushed back from 2018 to 2022, 110 years after the original hit an iceberg and fell to the ocean floor. If all goes according to plan, Palmer said the ship will travel from Dubai to Southampton before making the journey across the Atlantic.

"The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York," Palmer said in a statement  last month. "But she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivaled attention, intrigue and mystery in every port she visits."

Blue Star Line did not immediately respond to a request for additional details on the project.

The project was initially announced in 2012. After myriad financial problems, the plan was suspended in 2015 and restarted in September.

"Blue Star Line will create an authentic Titanic experience, providing passengers with a ship that has the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, while integrating modern safety procedures, navigation methods and 21st century technology to produce the highest level of luxurious comfort," Palmer said in his statement.

Palmer intends to make Titanic II's maiden voyage a two-week journey from Singapore to Dubai, followed by a trip to Southampton, where it would begin weekly trips between the U.S. and the U.K. during the summer months. The European headquarters of Blue Star Line will likely be in Paris, Palmer announced Monday , citing Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

Its namesake famously sank in the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg. But in a few years, fans of "Titanic" the film could have to opportunity to ride in the same ship where people fell in love with Rose and Jack.

"Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty," Palmer said. "Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true."

All tip and no iceberg? Clive Palmer refloats Titanic II plans 10 years after first announcement

Billionaire says ‘it’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money’

The billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer has vowed to build a vessel “far, far superior than the original” as he unveiled designs for his Titanic II project – again.

Palmer hired a room at Sydney Opera House on Wednesday to let the world know his vision of building a to-scale replica of the doomed ocean liner would finally come to be.

Yet after distributing a press release to journalists in which he promised his company Blue Star Line would construct “the ship of love and the ultimate in style and luxury”, Palmer acknowledged he hadn’t yet secured a shipyard.

It was almost 10 years to the day since Palmer held a very similar press conference at London’s Ritz Hotel to “launch” his Titanic II dream.

A 3D rendering of Clive Palmer’s planned Titanic II

Asked by a reporter at that event if the project was a hoax or a publicity stunt, Palmer said that was “bullshit, really” and he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

Since then, Palmer has served a term as a federal MP, deregistered and then revived a political party and spent millions of dollars on various legal challenges , tourism ventures and expensive election campaigns .

Work on the Titanic II was suspended in 2015 after a payment dispute between one of Palmer’s companies and the Chinese company Citic starved it of funds. Palmer re-announced the project in 2018 with a proposed sail date of 2022.

On Wednesday, Palmer blamed the Covid pandemic for the delays. He said people should believe him this time because “I’ve got more money now”.

Palmer, who turns 70 later this month, stood in front of Sydney Harbour and suggested he could die having “done nothing”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” he said. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.

“All you need to be happy, I’ve found in my life, is to have someone that loves you, somewhere to sleep at night and enough for a good meal.

“Beyond that, the rest is an illusion – it’s like playing golf.”

Palmer said he was confident he could secure a shipyard in time for construction on the vessel start early next year, with the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton to New York – replicating the ill-fated 1912 voyage of the original – scheduled for June 2027.

He said tenders for construction would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. He estimated the 56,000-tonne ship would cost between $500m and $1bn.

after newsletter promotion

The Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin was among the companies that supported the project, Palmer said.

While there was no real ship in sight – at least, not yet – journalists were shown a five-minute video of detailed 3D renders of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like.

Palmer said he was bringing in some of “the best designers in the world for cruise shipping”. The ship would have the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

Set to Johann Strauss’s The Blue Danube and featuring CGI animations of people dressed in period attire from the early 1900s, the video detailed the ship’s technical specifications, including a “Lifeboat Overview”.

The real RMS Titanic struck an iceberg partway through its maiden voyage across the Atlantic and sank on 15 April 1912, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,500 passengers and crew.

The story was mythologised with the release of James Cameron’s hit romantic film in 1997 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Palmer said Jack and Rose’s love story was “one that touches the hearts of everybody”.

“The Titanic [II] we hope can act as a catalyst to reinvigorate some of those values that we’ve got, which will hopefully lead to peace.”

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his pet project, a working replica of the doomed cruise liner Titanic, after a favourable court ruling. But given the sketchy details around the project and Palmer’s history of over-reaching, should Titanic II be taken seriously?

titanic cruise ship

Back in 2015, it looked like one of the more eccentric ideas in the history of shipbuilding was going to sink without a trace. The Titanic II project, the brainchild of billionaire Australian businessman and politician Clive Palmer, was announced in 2012 and aimed to create an authentic replica of the original Titanic cruise liner, which sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in April 1912, with more than 1,500 passengers and crew losing their lives.

The cruise liner, which was due to make its first voyage in 2016, was planned as a detailed replica of the original vessel, with impeccably recreated interiors and hull form, albeit slightly larger than the original and incorporating modern safety technologies and standards, including more than enough lifeboats and rafts to evacuate all passengers and crew in case history should repeat itself.

While the media clamoured at the ambition of the idea and sceptical commentators wondered if it was anything more than a publicity stunt from a businessman with a history of ego-driven bad ideas , Palmer appeared confident that the vessel would be built. Blue Star Line – its name harking back to the White Star Line that built the original Titanic – was established to steward the A$700m project to completion, and reputable contractors such as Deltamarin and Lloyd’s Register Marine were brought on board to create and review designs for the ship. CSC Jinling shipyard in China was mooted as the site for the construction of the vessel.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty,” Palmer said in 2012. “ Titanic II will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

Three years later, the dream had soured.

Deadlines had already slipped to the extent that the 2016 launch date was already out of reach, but in 2015 a dispute over mining royalty payments between Palmer’s company Mineralogy and Chinese firm Citic reportedly drained the project of funds, putting it on indefinite hold.

The revived Titanic II project

In September 2018, Titanic II seemed to experience a miraculous revival. The Supreme Court of Western Australia ruled in 2017 that Citic was obliged to pay nearly $150m in unpaid royalties, which apparently left enough in the pot to bring Palmer’s passion project back to life.

In late 2018, Blue Star Line announced that Deltamarin had recommenced work on the project, and in December V.Ships Leisure was contracted to support the development of the build.

“We are looking forward to assisting Blue Star Line with our expertise in project support, new build supervision and ship management,’’ said V.Ships Leisure director Per Bjornsen. “This process showcases the full spectrum of ways in which ship management can add value from the very beginning in the management of a cruise vessel, long before the first steel is even cut.”

Palmer also made headlines last year when he announced that the European headquarters would be established in Paris rather than London due to concerns over Brexit, and that the European operation would be overseen by the somewhat worryingly named Clive Mensink.

Should Titanic II be taken seriously?

Even if Palmer’s Titanic II appears to have a tentative green light again, there’s little reason to believe that this project will ever see the light of day. Conflicting media reports over basic information such as whether or not construction on the ship has actually started, and where it will be built – some reports have said construction is already underway , while others have noted that the upcoming build is expected to take place in China , and still others have quoted Blue Star Line as saying the ship will likely be built in the Northern hemisphere .

Blue Star Line is doing little to provide clarity on key details, and appears to have deleted from its website many news releases quoted in media reports about the project. Even a widely-reported new launch date of 2022 was contradicted by the company, which confirmed to The Guardian in October that no dates had been announced, no construction had taken place and no shipbuilders had been contracted.

Beyond the lack of credible confirmation that the project is remotely ready to move forward, there are reasons to doubt that even a ship outfitted exactly as Palmer has described – from the recreated gymnasium to the ballrooms and Turkish baths – would actually find a market. No information on pricing is available, but Blue Star Line seems set on reviving period-specific details that are completely out-of-step with modern cruise expectations.

Air conditioning will apparently be added, but there will be no televisions or internet access, with the idea being that passengers who have no doubt spent thousands will be happier dressing up in period outfits, which will reportedly be provided in every room.

Second and third-class cabins circa 1912 will be incorporated, with narrow bunk beds and wash basins replacing the bathrooms and sea views that modern cruise customers expect, despite Palmer’s insistence is that third class is “where the fun will be”. Perhaps he imagines the cheerful working-class dancing scenes with Jack and Rose from the 1997 movie. By the by, Palmer has also said ‘Palmer Pictures’ is looking to outdo James Cameron’s classic with a Titanic movie of his own, a romance filmed onboard Titanic II .

The ultimate fate of the project remains to be seen. There are certainly viable ways of reviving the Titanic as a non-functional museum or centrepiece tourist attraction, as a theme park in China’s Sichuan province is attempting to do. But with Palmer’s history of over-reaching and the sketchy details of the build, it’s impossible to escape the conclusion that this is the vanity project of a billionaire Titanic obsessive looking to recreate a bygone relic of colonial elegance, without much thought put into whether the rest of the world is as interested as he is. Titanic II might not be sunk yet, but it would be a minor miracle if this project turns out to be seaworthy.

Billionaire Clive Palmer Relaunches Plans to Build a Replica of the Titanic

  • March 16, 2024

Titanic II

The Australian billionaire Clive Palmer and his company Blue Star Line have relaunched the plan to build the Titanic II, a replica of the ship that sank in 1912.

The billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament made the announcement on Thursday, March 13, at a press conference in Sydney.

According to the Guardian , Palmer revealed plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel “far, far superior than the original” early next year.

Palmer has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before (in 2012 and again in 2018) and blamed the pandemic for the delays. However, this time, he assured the public that he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” said Palmer.

Palmer said tenders for the construction of the vessel would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. According to the billionaire’s estimate, the project would cost between $500 million and $1 billion.

He also revealed that the Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin supported the project.

Journalists at the press conference were shown a five-minute video of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

The Titanic II will be 269 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (105 feet) wide with a capacity for 2,345 passengers in 835 cabins. Nearly half of the cabins will be reserved for first-class passengers.

Third-class passengers will dine on stew and mashed potatoes at communal tables in a dining room reminiscent of the original ship. However, a spokesperson noted that alternative meal options will also be available for passengers seeking a less traditional experience.

Titanic ii ship – the modern rebirth of a legendary ocean liner.

Photo Credit: 1. Unknown / Wikimedia Commons / Public Domain | 2. Roderick Eime / Wikimedia Commons CC BY 2.0

The Titanic 2 ship is not merely a vessel; it’s a floating homage to one of the most storied maritime legends in history. This ambitious project aims to resurrect the grandeur of the original RMS Titanic while ensuring adherence to 21st-century safety standards. The concept of Titanic 2 is to recreate the experience of the original ocean liner, which famously sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg, but with a modern twist that promises to captivate both history enthusiasts and sea travel aficionados.

The vision behind the Titanic 2 ship

Titanic in Southampton, England.

The vision behind the Titanic 2 ship is a blend of reverence and ambition, a tribute to the unparalleled opulence of the original RMS Titanic while promising a safe and modern sea voyage. This ambitious project is not merely about replicating the physical dimensions of the iconic ocean liner; it’s about capturing the spirit and grandeur that the Titanic represented in the early 20th century. The developers of the Titanic 2 ship are driven by a desire to offer passengers the opportunity to step back in time and experience the elegance and luxury of the golden age of ocean travel, complete with the grand staircase, lavish dining rooms, and period-appropriate attire.

Yet, the Titanic 2 ship is more than a floating museum; it’s a statement of technological progress and a nod to the advancements in maritime safety. While the romance of the past is a significant draw, the team behind the Titanic 2 ship is equally focused on ensuring that the vessel honors the legacy of those who sailed on the original Titanic . The vision is to merge the historical allure with contemporary comforts, creating a unique travel experience that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.

Design and features of the Titanic 2 ship

A rendering model of the Titanic 2 being in water.

The Titanic 2 ship is a remarkable feat of modern engineering that honors its namesake’s luxurious design while incorporating the latest technological advancements. The vessel’s aesthetics are a near-replica of the original Titanic , featuring the same grand staircase and opulent first-class cabins that exude the elegance of the early 20th century. Yet, beneath its vintage veneer, the Titanic 2 ship is thoroughly outfitted with contemporary amenities. Passengers can expect state-of-the-art navigation systems and the comfort of modern air-conditioning, alongside digital entertainment options that seamlessly blend into the classic decor.

Beyond its visual similarities, the Titanic 2 ship is engineered to offer more than just a nostalgic replica of the original Titanic . It’s a fully functional, ocean-going cruise liner equipped with cutting-edge safety features, which will be discussed in detail later in the article. The ship also prioritizes environmental considerations, employing the latest in fuel-efficient engines and waste management systems.

Planned routes and maiden voyage details

A map with itinerary route of the Titanic.

The anticipation surrounding the Titanic 2 ship’s maiden voyage is palpable among maritime enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This modern replica aims to pay homage to its namesake’s fabled journey, with plans to sail the same transatlantic route that the original RMS Titanic attempted over a century ago. Departing from Southampton, UK, and bound for New York City, the Titanic 2 ship is designed to offer passengers the chance to step back in time while enjoying the safety and comfort of modern technology.

Details about the Titanic 2 ship’s maiden voyage have been a topic of great curiosity. While the exact date has been subject to change, the journey is intended to closely mirror the original 1912 schedule , providing a sense of authenticity to the experience. Passengers will be able to traverse the North Atlantic, following in the wake of the original Titanic , but with the assurance that the Titanic 2 ship is equipped with the latest navigation and safety systems.

Safety measures and modern advancements on the Titanic 2 ship

A comparison drawing between the shape of the Titanic and Titanic II.

The Titanic 2 ship is not just a replica of its ill-fated predecessor; it’s a modern marvel equipped with the latest safety measures and technological advancements to ensure the well-being of all on board. In the wake of the original Titanic ‘s tragic sinking, the new vessel has been designed with a double hull and modern navigation and radar equipment that far surpasses the early 20th-century technology. These updates are crucial , as they provide enhanced protection against icebergs and other potential hazards at sea. Moreover, the lifeboat capacity on Titanic 2 exceeds the number of passengers, ensuring that in the unlikely event of an emergency, everyone can be accommodated safely and quickly.

Beyond the structural and navigational improvements, the Titanic 2 ship boasts cutting-edge safety protocols, including rigorous training for the crew in emergency procedures. Fire safety systems have been significantly upgraded, featuring the latest in smoke detection and water sprinklers. Additionally, the communication systems on board are state-of-the-art, ensuring that the Titanic 2 can maintain contact with the outside world, regardless of its location.

The journey of the Titanic 2 project is as intriguing as the historical tale it seeks to revive. As we navigate through the uncertainties and challenges that accompany this ambitious endeavor, one cannot help but feel a sense of anticipation for the potential resurrection of a bygone era. Whether the Titanic 2 ultimately graces the seas as a triumph of engineering or becomes a cautionary tale, its story serves as a captivating reflection on our collective fascination with the past.

Australian billionaire says ‘Titanic’ replica will set sail in 2027—but first he has to build the ship

A billionaire wants to build a new Titanic cruise ship.

Want to be king of the world? The Titanic is set to sail once again.

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has noodled for years with the idea of building Titanic II : a full replica of the doomed luxury liner that sank on its maiden voyage in 1912. Now he’s set a date for the successor’s first voyage.

“We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have re-engaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic II to life. Let the journey begin,” Palmer said in a statement. The ship is scheduled to set sail in June of 2027, although tickets are not yet available.

First, Blue Star Line, of which Palmer is CEO, has to build Titanic II.

That’s something the mining billionaire and politician has hoped to do for more than a decade. He first announced his plans to do so in 2012. Nothing happened. He made another announcement in 2017, but blamed the pandemic for scuttling those plans. Now, he says, construction will begin next year—and Blue Star is seeking proposals and construction plans from builders.

There will be some differences from the original, of course. Palmer has said he wants cutting-edge navigation equipment (the better to avoid those icebergs) and a lot more lifeboats than the Titanic featured in James Cameron’s film .

Otherwise, though, the plan is to make it as exact as possible, with grand staircases; 835 cabins over nine decks; and first, second, and third/steerage class cabins. Folks who opt for the budget option will be served stew and mash at communal tables, just as the original passengers were (though they can opt for other meal choices).

Palmer even says that depending on the weather, they’ll have delousing for third-class passengers, just as the original vessel did.

The ship will begin its voyage in Southampton, England, according to Blue Star Line’s website . From there, it will head to Cherbourg, France, before sailing to New York.

Palmer, who jokes that his wife has tried to talk him out of re-creating the Titanic, says he is funding the project himself and has already allocated “a couple of hundred million dollars” for the recreation, adding, ”and certainly there’s more available.”

“One of the problems we had with the Titanic is that you have to make it safe,” he told Rolling Stone . “You’ll remember, in the movie you had the guy in the crow’s nest saying “Iceberg!” That was because from the bridge, you couldn’t see over the bow. We can’t do that today. So we had to put a whole new deck in the Titanic. And it’s got a lot of the modern conveniences that you want. We’re going to make sure that in every room there’ll be a little panel that will tell you the history of the person who occupied your cabin. Did they survive, did they prevail? Everyone will get a costume so that they can come up to dinner, and it will be a real experience for them.”

By funding the construction of Titanic II, Palmer is also able to put his own stamp on the cruise line. Passengers, he says, will not be required to be vaccinated for COVID, and the ship, he says, will reflect traditional values instead of ‘woke’ ones.

“Titanic ll is something that can provide peace,” he said in the press release. “It can be a ship of peace between all countries of the world. Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer revives his passion project, Titanic II, a modern replica of the doomed cruise ship that he thinks could solve all the world’s problems.

Given his track record of crashing superyachts and buying Hitler’s old cars , you’d be forgiven for wondering whether Clive Palmer was really the man to take as an authority on world peace or maritime cruising. Alas, none of this has stopped him from reviving a batsh*t passion project that he thinks could save the world.

The Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has reignited plans for the construction of ‘Titanic II’, a modern-day replica of the infamous liner that met its tragic fate over a century ago. With plans initially shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Palmer’s determination to bring this oddball dream to life has refused to wane.

WATCH: World’s Largest Cruise Ship Is Finally Ready

Palmer’s fascination with the Titanic’s story goes far beyond the kind of benign fascination for history that you might expect from a man of his increasing years and very deep pockets. Rather, he sees it as the keystone to his leaving a meaningful legacy. As chairman of Blue Star Line, the company behind the Titanic II project, Palmer hopes to capture the world’s imagination and, in his words, “provide peace” around the world through the shared experience.

The resurrection of Titanic II comes at a time when the world is reeling from the aftermath of several past global crises and getting its teeth into a whole host of new ones. With plans to replicate the grandeur of the original vessel while, thankfully, bringing it up to the mark set by modern safety standards, Titanic II aims to be an unexpected beacon of hope and unity in a world divided…

The ship’s design — meticulously crafted to evoke the opulence of the early 20th-century original — will offer passengers a chance to step back in time… whether that’s a step they actually want to take, however, remains to be seen. From the communal dining halls of the Titanic’s third-class to the luxurious cabins fit for first, Titanic II promises an unforgettable if uncanny journey through history.

Despite initial setbacks and a large dose of healthy scepticism, Palmer remains undeterred, determined to see his vision become a reality. With a number of commercial partnerships already signed off and build plans well underway, Titanic II is a cipher for Palmer’s unexpectedly altruistic ambition to bridge the past with the present and precipitate peace in the process…

“Titanic ll is something that can provide peace. It can be a ship of peace between all countries of the world.” Clive Palmer

As the world eagerly awaits the maiden voyage of Titanic II, one thing is certain: Clive Palmer’s passion project has unexpectedly lofty ambitions. Whether the ship lives up to them, or takes to the water at all, remains to be seen….

Does the world want a Titanic II? This billionaire thinks so

Editor’s Note: A new episode of the CNN Original Series “How It Really Happened” spotlights newly uncovered secrets of the Titanic revealed by the latest scientific advances. It premieres Sunday, April 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

For more than a decade, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has been the driving force behind plans to build Titanic II — a replica of the ill-fated ship that sank in 1912 with more than 2,200 people on board.

Only about 700 survived, making it the world’s most disastrous voyage.

More than a century after the Titanic went down, the world remains drawn to its story.

The tragedy inspired James Cameron’s Oscar-winning 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and has fascinated amateur explorers for decades.

One such mission ended in tragedy last June, when all five passengers aboard the  Titan submersible  were killed when the vessel suffered a catastrophic implosion en route to the wreckage.

Six years later, he relaunched the project during a recent press briefing at Sydney Opera House, against the backdrop of the city’s famed harbor.

The question is: Why?

“It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money,” Palmer reportedly told local media.

Palmer, who made his fortune from mining, remains undaunted by Titanic’s calamitous streak. He first launched plans for Titanic II in 2012, and again in 2018, but plans were sidelined during the Covid epidemic.

When he first floated his dream of building a more buoyant version of the Titanic more than a decade ago, the popular view was that he was rich and eccentric enough to do it.

But headwinds of the pandemic hit, and the multimillion-dollar project was put on hold as ports closed and passengers reassessed their risk appetite for being quarantined at sea.

Now that the pandemic has passed, and cruise ships are once again at sea, Palmer, who is chairman of the Blue Star Line company behind the project, said the time is right to revive his Titanic dream.

“We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have reengaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,’’ Palmer said in a press release.

Blue Star is soliciting proposals and plans to confirm a ship builder by the end of the year, to begin work in the first quarter of 2025.

Right now, Palmer expects the winning bidders to be based in Europe. He doesn’t believe Chinese standards are up to the task, he told reporters.

At the relaunch, his team redistributed an eight-minute video, showing the layout of the ship and how each room will look, complete with actors dressed in period costume.

Passengers will be encouraged to dress for the 1900s, but it’s not mandatory, a spokesperson said.

The ship itself will be 269 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (105 feet) wide — slightly wider than the original. Capacity will be 2,345 passengers spread across nine decks with 835 cabins. Almost half of those will be reserved for first class passengers.

Third class passengers will be treated to stew and mash at long tables in a communal dining room – as they were on the original boat – though a spokesperson said other meals will also be available for those who want a less authentic experience.

Palmer wants to replicate the Titanic – without the tragic ending. And he believes that tapping the world’s fascination for the luxury vessel will somehow bring people closer together.

“We all know how to make war. We get armies and we fund wars. People know about that. But it is a lot harder to make peace. To make peace you have got to stick with it every day. You progress inch by inch,” he said in the press release.

“Titanic ll is something that can provide peace. It can be a ship of peace between all countries of the world.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true,’’ Palmer said.

Titanic II is coming soon. Would you sail on it?

Ever since the titanic sank, multiple regulations have been put in place to make modern ships safer.

By Xochitl Bott Rivera

An Australian billionaire is reviving his dream of building the Titanic II, a replica of the infamous ship that sank in 1912, CNN reports.

Clive Palmer’s project stalled out during two previous efforts, the most recent coming during the pandemic.

Palmer shared, “We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have reengaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,” per CNN .

Forbes reports that Palmer is planning for the Titanic II to take its maiden voyage in June 2027. It will follow the same route as the Titanic, setting off from Southampton, England, on the path to New York.

Blue Star Line explains the features that will be found on the Titanic II will mimic the original Titanic design:

  • Passengers can choose between first-class, second-class or third-class cabins.
  • The deck will include Edwardian era games such as shuffleboard and deck quoits.
  • A pool and gymnasium will be available to passengers.
  • Meals provided will replicate original Edwardian era dishes.

Changes in regulations since the Titanic

When the Titanic sank, only around 700 passengers survived and more than 1,500 died, CNN reports.

The Titanic was equipped with only enough lifeboats for half of the passengers. Many people thought the ship was unsinkable, so safety was not a top concern.

Vox explains that the lack of lifeboats was due to the belief that the telegraph would get a distress signal out to nearby ships and the lifeboats would only need to be used as ferry vessels to transport passengers before it completely sank.

That was how an older ship, the RMS Republic, was able to save all its passengers in 1909 before it sank, according to Vox.

CNN reports that after the Titanic disaster, an international standard was created to ensure the safety of future ships, known as the SOLAS Convention, or International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The convention has been updated since then, but it was originally created after the Titanic sank, according to the International Maritime Organization .

The SOLAS Convention has created modern regulations to hopefully prevent any Titanic-like disasters:

  • Ice patrols are now a requirement in the north Atlantic.
  • If a passenger ship receives report of ice, they must slow down or alter course.
  • All passenger ships must have a public address system.
  • Lifeboats must be fully or partially covered to prevent hypothermia and must account for 125% of the number of passengers.
  • Crew members must undergo lifeboat training drills, and lifeboat drills (and fire drills) must be held weekly.
  • Distress alerts are sent via satellites, and all ships are required to have someone watching for potential distress signals.
  • Helicopters and evacuation chutes are now used on ships in addition to lifeboats.
  • All ships must have immersion suits on hand.

See the Titanic wreckage more than 100 years later

Innovation that continues to uncover new details about the RMS Titanic and its underwater graveyard fosters fascination with the ship’s lore even 111 years later.

Though the RMS Titanic descended into the depths of the ocean more than 100 years ago, new details of the famed wreckage continue to be discovered in the deep sea.

The Titanic, a behemoth in its time, was an ocean liner that spanned more than 880 feet long and weighed 46,329 tons when it departed on its maiden voyage April 10, 1912. The liner was hailed as a feat of engineering and boasted to be an "unsinkable ship" by the White Star Line company.

But a few days into its trip from England to New York, the Titanic hit an iceberg that caused it to sink within about three hours.

An estimated 1,522 people, both crew and passengers, were lost at sea and 705 survivors escaped on the ship's lifeboats, according to the Smithsonian Museum .

It took more than 70 years for divers to uncover the Titanic's resting place, roughly 350 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Last month, researchers revealed the first full-size digital scan of the Titanic . Previously, photos and videos captured after the 1985 discovery of the site were taken in pieces and incomplete, Parks Stephenson, a Titanic analyst and historian, told NBC News at the time.

The new 3D scan provided the first opportunity to view the Titanic's remains in full, without being pieced together by historians and scientists.

More than a century later, fascination with the lore of the Titanic remains strong thanks to fast-moving technological innovation, which allows to keep extracting new details about the liner's doomed voyage.

Titanic ll construction planned for 2025, following pandemic-related delays

BRISBANE, Australia (WKRC) - An Australian billionaire is planning to construct the Titanic ll, a near-perfect replica of the ill-fated ship that struck an iceberg and sank in 1912.

According to CNN, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer first launched his ambitious project to construct a Titanic replica in 2012, then again in 2018. The plans, however, were delayed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Forbes, Clive Palmer is worth around $4.2 billion and made much of his wealth from mining.

“It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money,” Palmer reportedly told local media when asked why he had undertaken the massive project, per CNN.

According to the network, when Palmer first floated ideas of building a replica Titanic, many believed he was eccentric and rich enough to do it. When the pandemic brought the world to a halt, however, Palmer was forced to put his ambitious plans on hold.

Now that the COVID-19 pandemic is over and cruise ships are sailing the seas again, Palmer, who is chairman of the Blue Star Line company, is ready to revive the project, full steam ahead.

“We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have reengaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,’’ Palmer said in a press release.

9 News Australia uploaded a video to YouTube, which includes a clip of Palmer reiterating his intent to see the project to its completion.

In the video, when asked why people should believe he'll finish the project when it's been just a promise for so long, Palmer replies "because I have more money now."

According to CNN, Blue Star Line is soliciting proposals and plans, hoping to confirm a ship builder by the end of the year, so that work can begin on the vessel in the first quarter of 2025. Per the network, Palmer said he expects the winning bidders to be based in Europe, as he doesn't believe Chinese standards are up to the task.

Palmer said his intention is to replicate the Titanic, without the tragic ending, and believes tapping into the world's fascination with the ship will bring people closer together.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true,’’ Palmer said, per the network.

This Historic Photograph May Depict the Iceberg That Sank the Titanic

The image, which sold for $22,000 at auction this week, was taken aboard a recovery vessel days after the famous ocean liner went down

Iceberg Photograph

Over a century after the Titanic hit its fateful iceberg, the ship remains a haunting symbol of human innovation, hubris and tragedy. This week, Henry Aldridge auction house in Devizes, Wiltshire sold an “extremely rare” black and white photograph of an iceberg —that some believe is the one that sank the Titanic—for £17,500 (about $22,000).

The Titanic struck its iceberg on April 14, 1912, resulting in approximately 1,522 deaths of the 2,240 passengers and crew onboard. A few days after the ocean liner sank, a recovery ship, the C.S. Mackay-Bennett , went to gather the bodies from the ocean. During the mission, someone onboard took a photograph of an iceberg.

On the ship was John R. Snow, Jr ., whose family company was the largest undertaking firm in Nova Scotia. Snow played a large role in overseeing recovery efforts following the Titanic disaster.

The embalmers on the C.S.  Mackay-Bennett recovered 306 bodies, but the ship only had 100 coffins onboard. Snow’s men placed 100 bodies in the caskets and wrapped an additional 90 corpses in canvas material. For the remaining 116 bodies, the men performed sea burials.

According to Artnet ’s Verity Babbs, a vendor of Henry Aldridge acquired the five-by-three-inch photograph of the iceberg from Snow’s family in the 1990s. Thus, it is possible that John R. Snow, Jr. took the photograph himself.

The photograph was sold as part of Henry Aldridge’s Auction of Titanic, White Star and Transport Memorabilia sale on April 27. The auction house calls the photograph “extremely rare,” and the sale exceeded expectations, quadrupling the photographer's low estimate of £4,000 (about $5,000).

“Nobody can say for sure that this was the iceberg that sank the Titanic,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge tells the Daily Mail ’s Lettice Bromovsky. “But what we can say is that after the rescue ship Carpathia , the Mackay-Bennett was one of the first ships to reach the wreck site and that the undertaker on board decided to take a photo of this iceberg.”

During the sale, the auction house also sold big ticket items like a gold pocket watch with the initials of John Jacob Astor IV , the richest passenger on the Titanic. Astor’s watch sold for £1.175 million (roughly $1.4 million). The auction house also sold the violin case of the ship’s bandleader Wallace Hartley for £360,000 (about $450,000). The actual violin sold in 2013 for £1.1 million (about $1.7 million at the time). Hartley is famously depicted in James Cameron’s 1997 film , playing as the ship sinks.

The impressive numbers from the sale speak to the enduring legacy of the Titanic.

“Titanic is probably, next to Noah’s ark, history’s most famous ship,” Charles Haas , president of the Titanic International Society , tells the New York Times ’ Derrick Bryson Taylor.

“The Titanic story has already lasted 112 years,” he adds. “And while there are people out there who say, ‘The ship sank, get over it,’ it has so much built-in drama to it that the younger generations are still quite fascinated by it.”
