Pink Jeep Tour - Broken Arrow Tour - Sedona, Arizona

Pink Jeep Tour – one of the best tours in Sedona, AZ

When Dustin and I went to Sedona about 6 years ago, we kept seeing these bright pink jeeps driving all over the area. As curious as we were, we never ended up checking them out, until recently. Since we were planning our itinerary for Sedona, multiple people recommended the Pink Jeep Tour to us, specifically the Broken Arrow tour. Who are we to say no to beautiful scenery in the most remote areas around Sedona and crawling over desert rocks in a jeep?

ABOUT PINK JEEP ADVENTURES:

Found in 1960, Pink® Jeep Adventure Tours has since become the signature off-road excursions in Sedona, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and beyond. Besides the exceptional off-roading skills of the guides, they also have an in-depth understanding of the surroundings. All Pink guides are certified by the National Association for Interpretation and also receive extensive driving and safety training.

One of the things we love about Pink Jeep Tour is that they work closely with the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, and park rangers to maintain, rebuild, and re-vegetate trails. They also volunteer for trail clean up and contributes to preservation efforts.

THE ADVENTURE:

Checking in:.

Our Broken Arrow tour started bright and early at 8 am. On this tour, we dragged my sister and brother-in-law with us. Once we parked, we quickly walked toward the Pink Jeep Plaza, 30 minutes earlier. After a quick temperature scan for COVID-19 and check-in, our group went out to the back of the plaza to wait for our tour to start. As we gathered around, one of the operators at Pink Jeep tour came out to greet everyone and gave us a short introduction and instructions about our tours. After he finished, the individual guides for each tour came out to take us over to our appointed vehicle.

Paul came over to introduced himself as our guide. There were 6 people total on our tour, our group of 4 and Tim and Amy from Tennessee. Pink Jeep tour did a great job in the midst of the epidemic. The jeep has a divider to have separate different parties that are on the same tour. They also limited the number of people on each tour for better social distancing. After letting everyone taking their turn getting on the jeep safely, Paul made sure everyone put their seatbelts on. He also asked us to introduce ourselves, that way, everyone can be comfortable with each other. Once everyone was safely and comfortably settled in, Paul started the beast and we were off on our exciting adventure.

Beginning of Our Pink Jeep Tour:

The Broken Arrow tour runs along the beautiful Broken Arrow trail, located at the end of a neighborhood. After a smooth drive on the paved road, we were greeted with a huge boulder blocking the entrance of the dirt road. Of course, it is not a problem for our Pink beast. Paul switched gear and carefully drove the beast over our first obstacle of the day. He said the boulder is there to block out all the sedans. Since this trail is a technical off-road trail, it is not suitable for just any car.

After conquering our first obstacle, we quickly came upon our second one. It is a small hill consist of smooth rock. Since my sister is not an avid adventurer nor had she been off-roading before, I could see a slight terror on her face as she looked at the path we have to drive through. Paul swiftly put her mind at ease with his driving skill as he crawled easily over the smooth boulders.

Scenic Viewpoints:

There are 2 scenic viewpoints on our tour. The first one is the Submarine rock. Like its name, this rock is shaped like a submarine if you look at it from the top down. Paul parked the Pink beast at the bottom of the giant rock and walked us up to the top. It was a short walk, but the view up here is spectacular. It gives you a 360° view of the surrounding area. After helping us taking our group photos and letting us enjoy the views, Paul led us back to the jeep to continue on to our adventure.

The Broken Arrow trail is a beautiful trail. It is surrounded by Sedona’s iconic red cliffs and intense blue sky. According to Paul, the reason Sedona’s sky is so blue because of the bright red dirt that Sedona is so famous for. The red dirt helps enhance the intensity of the color blue. Paul is a super fun and knowledgeable guide. Not only he gave us a lot of insights about Sedona, but he answered all our questions from what gear he used to go down the rock steps, to what vortexes are and to where to go eat.

After submarine rock, we proceeded to our second viewpoint, the Chicken Point. It is a small plateau with a small rock boulder in the middle. This place is called the Chicken Point because back then, all the off-roaders dared each other to drive around that small rock boulder on that tiny plateau. Whoever didn’t do it got called “chicken”. It is not something people do anymore, however, Chicken Point still has the best view.

DSC09488-Edit

The Main Event and the Way Back:

We spent sometimes at the Chicken Point to take in the incredible views before starting on our more technical part of the tour. Paul drove us over to a big hill consists of smooth rock slabs. This hill is quite steep that as we drove to the top of it, the Jeep was on a 45° angle. Paul made the process looks easy. He expertly drove us down the same steep hill. After this hill, Paul showed off by taking the Jeep down the rock stairs, one step at a time. It was super fun.

If you’re visiting Sedona, we recommend doing a Pink Jeep tour. If you love off-roading, definitely do the Broken Arrow tour. We had so much with Paul. The tour is enjoyable for everyone from someone that owes a Jeep such as us, to someone that has no experience whatsoever with off-roading like my sister.

Frequently Asked Questions

Morning tours are best for cooler temperatures and wildlife sightings.

Light, loose-fitting clothing, comfortable shoes with good traction, sunglasses and sunscreen are key; if visiting in the winter, bring a light jacket as well. Keep in mind that anything you wear will get dusty (so it's probably best to avoid white).

Seating capacity varies by tour. For example, A Day in the West Jeep tours have a six-person capacity, while Pink Adventure Tours' Jeeps seat nine people (in addition to the tour guide/driver).

Pink Jeep Tour in Sedona With Kids. It’s no secret that Sedona is a stunner! Driving down Highway 89A and staring into those majestic red rocks is enough to calm every nerve in your body. Of course, that’s one way to see Sedona, but there’s a whole other way. It’s off the beaten path and can get pretty bumpy, but the views are transformative, and the experience is unforgettable.

It’s a Pink Jeep Tour!

About Pink Jeep Tours

Pink Jeep Tours take you deep into the red rocks of Sedona where you can gawk at some of the most famous formations. Your knowledgeable driver is well-equipped to give you the history of the land, the science behind the rock formations and all the pro tips for getting the best photos.

Planning Your Pink Jeep Tour

There are many tour options that differ in price, tour duration and level of ruggedness. I was traveling with my husband, two sons (ages 7 and 2) and my parents, so we had a wide range of ages in our party. But it was our 2-year-old that worried me. I wasn’t sure if he’d be comfortable in the jeep, and I wasn’t sure how bumpy was too bumpy for a toddler. After lots of consideration, we booked the two-hour Broken Arrow Tour which was rated a three out of five on bumpiness.

Embarking on the Journey

On the day of the tour, we arrived 30 minutes before our tour start. When it was time to board, our driver met us and escorted us to our pink jeep.

Now this is the part I was dreading – getting our toddler into the jeep. He screamed for a good five minutes as he tried to wriggle from the car seat (which Pink Jeep provided). His cries even made my 7-year-old anxious as he started to wonder just how scary this ride would be. But as soon as our driver started up the jeep, and the vehicle began moving, everyone started to calm down – myself included!

From there, it was smooth-sailing. Well, smooth in terms of the kids being content, but as promised, it was a literal bumpy ride! We drove almost completely vertical to climb up and down the rocks. Lots of holding on and swaying back and forth.

Seeing the Sights

Our driver led us to two stops.

The first was Submarine Rock where we had incredible 360-views of the towering red rocks. It was a great place to stretch our legs, and the area was wide enough for both our kids to explore without feeling like they could slip and fall.

The second stop was Chicken Point. It’s called this in reference to the folks back in the day who were too “chicken” to race around the narrow circular path surrounding the point. The views here were awe-inspiring. We loved staring at the magnificent rust-red spires reaching to the sky, and my 7-year-old enjoyed climbing the rock that signified the “point” at Chicken Point.

Back Safe and Sound

Once we were back at the Pink Jeep check-in location, our driver told us how well our toddler did and that for many tykes his age, once they hit the road and realize they’re pretty much in a regular car seat, they tend to do just fine. That made my mama heart happy. That, on top of seeing both kids have a blast with the big bumps and their anticipation of what was around the next corner. Although Pink Jeep tours are far from cheap, I consider the experience to be worth every penny for these memories.

Basic Details

• Cost: $142 for adults and $129 for children

• No children under age 2 allowed

• Car seats provided for children ages 2 to 4
