Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in the Andes of Peru

You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

So please check our “ Peru travel guide ” that offers a lot of relevant information about traveling to the country.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

Client Testimonials

Great tour. Guides were excellent and we got an realistic feel for the history and culture of Lima. Cusco and Machu Picchu. They handled any issues that arose with a lot of class. A bit more casual than what we're accustomed to in terms of scheduling but I think that added to the enjoyment of the trip.

Google

Traveled this December to Cusco with my wife and some friends, finally lined up some vacation time to check out the Inca Trail. We got in touch with Journey Machu Picchu (our travel agent's name was Eduardo),they organized the whole trip for us. They took care of all the permits, hotels, tours, guides, etc, even got us an upgrade on the trains. We had an issue with my wife the day before starting the trail and assumed we'd have to cancel everything. Nope, they hooked her up with different tours while we were on the trail and met back up in Machu Picchu. The trail itself was so much better than I'd thought it'd be. Edgar (our guide) helped us along every step of the way. We had an awesome time and hope to do a few more treks in the future, the Salkantay looked pretty cool.

Thank you so much to Marco, Michael and all the staff that makes our journey very memorable. To our tour guide in Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, thank you for sharing your country's amazing history. Thank you for the driver for showing us the other side of the country, and buying lechon from the locals on the way to Olantaytambo.

ook a 10 day package with Journey at the end of November leading into the holidays. Went to Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. We got to see all the mainstays as far as I know. Great, well organized trip. The altitude hit me a bit hard during the first couple of days but I was allright after that. Our guides were great, our guide in Machu Picchu was exceptional, he answered all of our questions, never left us with any sort of uncertainty. The airport was a bit of a hassle though, customs took forever to let us through but I can't hold you guys accountable for that. Thank you for helping a couple of old men finally take this trip, the logistics was getting a bit too out of hand for us. Very friendly staff on the whole.

It was an amazing trip. All the food was included, the guide was phenomenal and the hike itself was stunning!

The trip went according to plan . Machu Picchu was amazing and staying at the sacred valley was a great decision!! I can’t wait to wait to go back soon 😍😍

El itinerario que tuvimos fue excelente. Buena calidad de equipo y comprometidos con su trabajo. Si volviera a organizar otro paseo sin duda alguna lo haría con Journey Machu Picchu. Gracias y sigan así. (Translated by Google) The itinerary we had was excellent. Good team quality and committed to their work. Peru Vacation Packages and Tours

peru holiday tour packages

Peru offers the visitor on a Peru vacation an extraordinary array of wonders both historical and geographical. The country is divided into three regions. There is the coastal Pacific plain on which the capital, Lima is located, the Altiplano of the Andean mountain range and the jungle which covers approximately half of Peru in the Amazonian Rainforest . The inhabitants of Peru are a mixture of ethnic backgrounds (Spanish, Indigenous and African) and contribute greatly to the cuisine and the music of the country.

Lima, situated on the Pacific Ocean, is a large busy city. The centre or Centro Historico as it is known locally is a UNESCO World Heritage site based on its beautiful pre-Hispanic and Colonial architecture. The oldest buildings can be found in an area called Barrios Altos. One museum that is a must-visit is the Museo Larco which relates the country’s history in an interesting and engaging way. The upscale suburb of Miraflores situated on the ocean with its many parks and gardens is where a large number of tourists stay. It has many high-rise modern buildings and is home to a number of hotels and restaurants, all to be enjoyed on Peru tours.

Cusco , also known as Cuzco, is a magical city with a rich archaeological legacy. It was the capital of the Inca Empire and as such is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cusco is easy to walk around to get to know this colourful walled city. The beautiful and lively Plaza de Armas in the very centre consists of churches, shops, restaurants and bars. The vibrant San Pedro Market is an excellent place to watch the locals do their shopping. Nearby is Sacsayhuaman which is approximately 1 mile/2 kilometres outside of Cusco. It is something of a climb to reach on foot but well worth the effort due to its ambience and its Inca relics.

  • Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is not too far from Cusco and is so named because the Incas found it to have the best land. Situated in the Urubamba Valley, it contains numerous archaeological remains. Visit Pisac, famous for its Indian market with excellent handicrafts for sale and also its Inca ruins. On Peru tours, another interesting town in the valley is Ollantaytambo which is laid out as it was in Inca times. It is an old town built over a period of 500 years by the Incas. The Inca ruins here are large of religious significance and date back to the time when the Incas defeated the Spanish in a battle here.

  • Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the true wonders of the world. Only discovered in 1911, the name in the ancient language of the Incas, Quechan, means “Old Mountain”. It is actually a citadel perched high on top of a mountain and was the centre of worship for the Incas. It also served as an astronomical observatory.

The Inca Trail is a well-known trekking route on Peru vacation packages which starts 3 to 4 days of walking outside Machu Picchu arriving eventually at the site of Machu Picchu. It is 43 kilometres/27 miles in length. This stone-paved trail is not only Peru’s most popular trek but one of the most spectacular walks in Latin America.

  • Lake Titicaca

If one takes the train from Cusco to the south of the country to Puno on Lake Titicaca , the journey will be awe-inspiring as it travels through the most amazing mountain scenery.

Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake and is shared by both Peru and Bolivia . Puno is a port on the banks of the lake and also a picturesque hillside city. It is here that one can see many local women and men in their traditional clothing. One of the main attractions is the floating islands of Uros. These do actually float and are made of reed as are the houses and the boats of the local residents. Not too far away is the uninhabited Isla de la Luna known for its mythological significance for the Incas.

Peru’s second-largest city is Arequipa located on the southern coastal plain of the country below the Andean Altiplano. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its well-preserved old buildings and many churches. There are over 250 colonial buildings here. The Plaza de Armas is a beautiful square in the centre. Other attractions are the magnificent cathedral and the Convento de Santa Catalina, the most visited building in the city. The latter is actually a “city within a city” with narrow streets and a timeless air

Not far from Arequipa is the amazing Colca Canyon, the world’s deepest canyon and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The area is astoundingly scenic. There are endless trails in the area which link around 14 villages which have been preserved from early Colonial times.

Amazon Jungle

One other region which is of interest on Peru tours is the Amazon Jungle best travelled on board a small cruise vessel which will take you deep into the heart of the jungle to the meeting point of two Amazon River tributaries.

Other Places to Visit

One very unusual place to visit is Paracas on the Pacific Ocean. It is from here that one can view the Nazca Lines in a small aircraft. These are an age-old mystery. They are an area of land seen only properly from the air consisting of complex designs up to 300 metres/980 feet in length. They consist of vast drawings of figures of animals, insects and deities. They were only discovered in 1927 and date back to as early as 300 BC.

Peru Family Holiday

9 days | discover peru on this family adventure, touring the amazon jungle, cusco and machu picchu..

peru holiday tour packages

Gaze up at Peru’s dazzling peaks and into picturesque valleys to understand why the Andean mountains were sacred for the Incas. This well-paced holiday combines the wonders of the Amazon Jungle with the fascinating history of Cusco. Enjoy a memorable train journey through the heart of the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and breathe in the magical spirit of the Incas.

Trip overview

  • Hike jungle trails in search of monkeys, parrots, otters and caimans and sleep in a nature lodge lit by candles and kerosene lamps.
  • Meet the local artisans, farmers and townsfolk of the Sacred Valley – not forgetting the cute alpacas and llamas.
  • Be mesmerised by the mother of all Inca cities, the mysterious Machu Picchu, where you'll enjoy a guided tour.
  • With the help of a resident musician, make your own zampona – a traditional panpipe instrument – and learn how to play it like a local.
  • Cusco has something for everyone, making it perfect for a family visit. A boleto touristico pass grants you access to the best sights in town.
  • Cusco is located a spectacular 3450 metres above sea level, so it's important to be patient as your body adjusts. See the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section for information on altitude sickness.
  • Tradition runs deep in beautiful old Cusco, so a little homework will put you in good stead. Ask your leader about photography etiquette.
  • The Amazon Jungle can be very hot and humid, so it's important to drink plenty of water and wear light cotton clothing. Make sure you also bring tropical-strength insect repellent.
  • The weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. Be sure to bring warm clothes and prepare for all elements.

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Lima, Peru’s capital and one of South America’s most charming colonial cities. As there's little time spent here but so much on offer, you and your family may like to arrive a few days early to see all the sights, including the chic suburb of Miraflores, Central Park and Lovers' Park. Maybe check out some of the many museums or take a short trip out of town to visit Pachacamac, an impressive archaeological site. On the first day of your tour there’s a welcome meeting at the hotel at 5PM, after which you can get to know the other families and your tour leader over an optional dinner at a nearby restaurant.

  • Hotel Casa Andina Select Miraflores or similar (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information for each member of your family. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through us. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

Take a flight to Puerto Maldonado via Cusco this morning (approximately 2.5 hours) where the mighty Amazon Jungle awaits. Hop in a motorised canoe and head upriver (approximately 2 hours) to your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area. Don't forget to look out for wildlife along the way! After checking into your accommodation, join your local guide for a walk through the jungle (30 minutes) to your traditional Amazonian archery lesson where you'll discover how the local indigenous community craft and use their bow and arrow. You and your family can have a go at hitting the targets before heading back to the lodge for a hearty dinner. After dark we'll return to the river by boat in search of caimans and other nocturnal creatures.

  • Nape Lodge or similar (1 night)
  • Amazon Jungle - Traditional Amazonian archery
  • Amazon Jungle - Caimon spotting

Please note that the order and schedules of the activities may be modified according to weather and the wellbeing of the group.

You will be given a small duffel bag to pack what you need for the next two nights, as your main luggage will not travel with you. It will be securely stored in the lodge's office in town. The duffle bag holds approximately 8kgs/17pounds. So just a littler smaller in weight on the average airline carry on guidelines.

Your lodge is eco-friendly, combining low-impact architecture with traditional native style. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with flush toilets (en suite), showers (cold water only) and mosquito nets.

Start the day with a big breakfast before embarking on a hike through the jungle to Tres Chimbadas Lake (1 hour). Look out for colourful macaws, hoatzins, monkeys and black alligators. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of an endangered river wolf (otter)! Head back to the lodge for a rest, play and some lunch. This afternoon you'll visit a traditional medicine garden where the shaman of the community will introduce you to some plants used for healing. At the end of the tour you and your family will have the opportunity to go to the laboratory and observe how the medicines are prepared. After dinner tonight your guide will take you on a walking tour in search of insects, amphibians, tarantulas, bats, birds and (the shy) armadillo. Listen out for the sounds of the jungle and notice the stars peeking through the trees.

  • Amazon Jungle - Medicinal garden tour
  • Amazon Jungle - Guided nature walk
  • Amazon Jungle - Hike to Tres Chimbadas Lake
  • Amazon Jungle - Birdwatching

Transfer by boat back to Puerto Maldonado this morning and collect your large bags. From here, take a flight to Cusco (approximately 40 minutes) and arrive in the early evening. Tonight's plans are up to you. You might like to take a walk around the delightful old city, visiting the Inca walls of the Plaza de Armas or some of the many fine churches around town, or grab dinner and relax with your new friends. Whatever you choose, be sure to take it slow as you adjust to the city's high altitude (3450 m).

  • Taypikala Cusco Hotel or similar (1 night)

Take an orientation walk through the city with your leader this morning. Along the way you'll meet up with a local musician who will show you and your family around San Blas, the artisans’ neighbourhood. Learn about the significance of music and art in Peruvian culture and history. Visit their home and have a go at playing traditional drums, strings and wind instruments. You'll also be shown how to make and play your own zampona, a traditional panpipe, which you can take home with you. The rest of the day is yours to explore. Perhaps head to the local market and pick up some pastries for a picnic lunch. Or, if you're keen to brush up on your knowledge of Peruvian history before visiting Machu Picchu why not check out some of Cusco’s excellent museums? You'll have a full Boleto Turistico (tourist ticket) which means you can access the best attractions in town. If you're still feeling adventurous you might like to climb to the top of the Inca Pachacuti Statue and enjoy the city views.

  • Cusco - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Cusco - Peruvian music lesson & zampona making
  • Cusco - Full Boleto Turistico Pass (Entrance to 16 archaeological sites in/around Cusco)
  • Cusco - City tour and 4 Ruins (Price based on 4 participants)) - USD15
  • Cusco - Pisco Making Urban Adventure (Based on 2 participants) - USD57
  • Cusco - Cusco Cooking Class - USD70

Today we make our way by private vehicle into the beautiful Sacred Valley (1 hour). The first stop is Awanacancha, a South American farm, where you and your family can get to know some of Peru's famous furry locals: llamas, alpacas and vicunas! Next up is the town of Pisac, a charming little village nestled at the base of an Inca fort. Start by exploring the colourful local market where hundreds of artisans sell their wares. You might find anything from hand-knitted Alpaca jumpers to ornately decorated Andean ceramics here. Later you will visit a local community to have a delicious lunch and then learn about old techniques of dyeing, spinning and weaving the alpaca wool. After the weaving demonstration, it's off to explore the Inca ruins, which are spread out on the mountains above the town. They are roughly as old as those of Machu Picchu! Spend the evening in Pisac.

  • Royal Inka Pisac Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Pisac - Archaeological site of Pisac
  • Pisac - Awanancancha llama farm visit
  • Pisac - Weaving demonstration

Venture deeper into the Sacred Valley and discover Ollantaytambo, which is a 1.5 hour drive away. This awesome spot was built over an ancient Inca town, and it's a great example of Inca urban planning. This is one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. Ollantaytambo's archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces offer great photo opportunities of the square grid town below. Once you've done some exploring here, you'll take a midday train (2 hours) up to Aguas Calientes, taking in gorgeous Andean scenery along the way. In Aguas Calientes you can get an early night if you like, in preparation for tomorrow's visit to Machu Picchu.

  • Presidente hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Ollantaytambo - Archaelogical site entrance and guided tour

Take the bus (30 minutes) up to the stunning 'lost city' of Machu Picchu, arriving at 6 am. The site is perched high in the Andes, surrounded by verdant cloud forest. Hidden away on a ridge, Machu Picchu is invisible from below, so it's no surprise it remained a secret for so many years (until 1911). Your ticket grants access to the site for 4 hours. Explore the upper terrace with your family first, then take a guided tour of the ruins with a local guide, learning more about these 200 or so houses and temples. Catch the bus back into town and enjoy some spare time to have lunch and a look around. Take the train to Ollantaytambo (2 hours) and make the rest of the journey to Cusco by private vehicle (2 hours). Perhaps join your group for an optional farewell dinner. Don't forget to trade numbers so you can keep in touch with your new friends!

  • Machu Picchu - Entrance and guided tour

According to Machu Picchu visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site. This route must be followed in one direction only and once the guided visit commences exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. Once the guided visit concludes, visitors must exit the site and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not permitted. Due to Intrepid's internal safety policy, your leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking trips to the mountaintop ruins of Wayna Pikchu.

With no activities planned today and so much to see and do in Cusco, why not continue your adventure by extending your stay in this archaeological hub. We are happy to arrange additional accommodation for you, please ask your booking agent.

  • Cusco - Full Day Stand Up Paddle Boarding (Based on 4 participants) - USD85
  • Cusco - Full Day Via Ferrata & Zipline - USD95
  • Cusco - Humantay Lake Hike (Based on 4 participants) - USD130
  • Cusco - Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Hike (Based on 4 paticipants) - USD100

The trip was amazing...

The guides were informative and made interesting stops along the way during our transfers. We added the tour of the Sacred Valley and saw the Temple of the Sun, which was a highlight after being at Machu Picchu the previous day. We saw even more of the Inca's amazing architecture and terraces.

More information about peru.

Located on the west coast of South America , Peru is a country that ignites the imagination of travellers worldwide, with its fascinating ancient civilisations, wondrous natural attractions and iconic monuments. Bordered by Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile and Brazil, and with a vast coastline along the Pacific Ocean, Peru holidays are one of the must-do travel experiences.

The country has a diverse landscape, stretching from the arid plains of Nazca , where the mysterious Nazca Lines are located, to the high altitude peaks of the Andes. The legacy of the Inca Empire and the remnants of this mighty civilisation, preserved in monuments such as the citadel of Machu Picchu and the Rachqui Ruins, are unmissable sights on a Peru holiday package, along with the colonial architecture of its colourful cities, such as the capital, Lima. Peru encourages visitors to be adventurous, with a multitude of activities on offer, from sailing on Lake Titicaca to trekking in the Sacred Valley .

The famous Inca Trail , reserved for the most adventurous of travellers, is perhaps the most famous of all trekking routes, culminating in an ascent to Machu Picchu . One of the regions most prosperous economies, with a huge tourist industry, Peru has become increasingly popular in recent years, with travellers keen to tick its many sights off of their bucket lists.

Nature in Peru

On Peru tours travellers will find that Peru is a megadiverse country, and the sanctuary of many of the world’s species of animal, bird and plant life, including a large number of endemic species. From the Altiplano to the Amazon Basin , the country’s diverse geography and accompanying wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers.

The Amazon Rainforest in Peru, known for its heavy rainfall and tropical, humid climate, is home to a plethora of weird and wonderful animals species such as the pink river dolphin, found in the Amazon River , jaguars, giant otters and primates, along with an impressive one-third of the world's bird species.

The national bird is the bizarre Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, whilst the mighty Andean Condor is the highlight of Peru’s Colca Canyon , a deep river canyon in the south of the country where viewpoints such as the Cruz del Condor allowing onlookers to watch the flight of huge Condors , the largest flying bird in the world. The uninhabited Ballestas Islands, located off the coast of the port city of Pisco , is home to large populations of sea lions, pelicans, Peruvian boobies and Humboldt penguins, and is a popular day-trip destination for travellers on a package holiday to Peru. Aside from the country’s rich wildlife, Lake Titicaca stands out as an incredible natural attraction, owing to its immense size and altitude, securing it the title of the world’s highest navigable body of water and the largest lake in South America. In Andean traditions, it is thought to be the birthplace of the Sun God , and its glistening, reflective waters, which stretch across the border between Bolivia and Peru, are home to numerous floating islands, such as Taquile and Isla del Sol, where traditional communities live and work. Peru tour packages offer travellers a chance to discover the great variety of the country’s bountiful nature in one exciting trip.

History of Peru

Peru’s history can be traced back to the 4th century BC and to the ancient societies of the Chavin, Moche and the Nasca. The most well-known era of Peruvian history came later, in the 15th century with the enigmatic Inca civilisation, which emerged as a powerful state in this period. Growing out of their capital in Cusco , this revered civilisation started as a small ethnic group of Quechuas , but soon their influence expanded and incorporated their neighbours under the great Emperor Pachacuti .

The Inca Empire eventually controlled most of the Andean region, stretching into modern day Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, and are thought to have had a population of approximately 16 million inhabitants, who were encouraged to worship the Sun God, Inti and practice human sacrifice as a means to appease the gods.

This mysterious civilisation did not last for long, as by 1532, Spanish conquistadors had captured the Inca Emperor in the Battle of Cajamarca , marking the beginning of the end for the Incas. The emperor was later killed and a long conquest ensued, resulting in many deaths for the indigenous community, caused by both disease and warfare. Spanish victory came in 1572 , with colonisation and the destruction of much of the culture, monuments, religion and heritage of the Incas ruins following shortly afterwards.

Spanish language, culture and Catholicism replaced the indigenous beliefs and way of life, although even today, populations continue to speak in their native languages, such as Quechua. Most travellers on a holiday to Peru are excited to discover the lost ruins of the Inca Empire , such as Machu Picchu and to understand the values and traditions of this iconic civilisation.

Culture in Peru

With a population of approximately 32 million, made up of a variety of ethnicities, Peru has a diverse culture, ranging from Spanish influences, as seen in the language and architecture, to indigenous traditions as demonstrated in the varied folklore and musical styles and dances, which often include references to ancient beliefs surrounding spirits and the Sun God. The indigenous communities are also well known for their arts and crafts, such as the brightly coloured Andean clothing, with its intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. The different regions of Peru possess their own unique influences and traditions; in the highlands of the Andes you can expect to see folklore displays with flute and drum music, ritualistic dance and masks, whilst down in the Amazon jungle , tribal influences are more evident. In the coastal cities, there is an obvious Spanish character, both in the cuisine, terraced cafes and architecture. In contrast, travel through the Sacred Valley and you may feel as if you have been transported back in time, as you pass through the traditional villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, with their authentic markets, artisan textile weavers, Quechua- speaking communities and monolithic temple ruins, considered sacred to the inhabitants. Despite the modern feel of the coastal capital of Lima, you are never far from making contact with the ancient traditions and culture of the country’s earliest civilisations.

A trip to Peru will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Inca’s, get up close to some of the worlds most diverse and unique wildlife, uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines and realise your dreams of navigating Lake Titicaca. A paradise for the most intrepid travellers, a tour of Peru is a must-do bucket list experience.

Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Peru

The best time to visit Peru is in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, from May to August. These months are considered high season with cooler temperatures and full access to Peru’s highlights.

The Southern Hemisphere’s fall (March to April) and spring (September and October) are also great for exploring everything from the Andes Mountains and the Amazon. Crowds will be smaller in essential places like Machu Picchu, and the weather will be warm enough to enjoy the fantastic beaches along the Pacific coast.

While these months are our favorites, Peru is a year-round destination, and summer is a beautiful time to visit for its own reasons. Whether trekking the Inca Trail as a family in June or visiting Lake Titicaca to view the floating islands in January, our guide to the best time to visit Peru can help you find the right season for your trip.

Exploring Peru can take you deep into the Amazon jungle in search of wildlife or following the history of the Incan Empire, demonstrating the timeless and countless places to uncover. Here are a few of the best places to visit in Peru :

  • Machu Picchu : The famous ruins of Machu Picchu crown a plateau overlooking the Urubamba River, speaking to the former grandeur of the Lost City and the continued allure it holds over visitors from around the world.
  • Cusco: Shimmering with Spanish colonial grandeur and traditional Andean style, Cusco maintains its beauty in the mountains, emphasized by its mythological status as the “navel of the world.”
  • Lima: The coastal city of Lima is chic with contemporary sophistication, home to regional culinary masters and artistic representation that bridges the past and future of Peru.
  • The Amazon: With a reputation for rugged wilderness and intense biodiversity, visiting the Amazon Rainforest in Peru connects you to the importance of the local ecology and the vibrancy of the wildlife at every turn.

Art, architecture, and local cuisine uncover the layers of Peru’s history and culture. With impressive Michelin-starred restaurants, dramatic trails, and breathtaking ruins, Peru can be an exciting adventure or a surprisingly luxurious getaway. • Stay in some of the world’s most unique accommodations for unforgettable experiences.
  • Sample the extensive flavors of traditional and contemporary Peruvian cuisine.

Machu Picchu is in Peru’s Sacred Valley, high above the Urubamba River. There are two ways to reach the Incan ruins. You can hike the Inca Trail or take the train to Aguas Calientes.

When trekking the Inca trail, you enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. When traveling from Aguas Calientes, you reach the ruins through the main entrance. By arriving early, you can be one of the few visitors allowed to climb to the top of Huayna Picchu for an incredible view of Machu Picchu from above.

No matter how you reach Machu Picchu, the best way to experience the historic ruins is with a guide who can provide context to the site's remaining structures, history, and cultural importance.

Peru is famous as the home of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but the beauty and mystery beyond the famous ruins add to the allure of visiting the country. Luxury Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Days

Everything about our experience with TreXperience was amazing! Our guide Elvis was fantastic - he was incredibly knowledgeable, providing information about all of the Incan ruins and sites we encountered along the Inca trail. He took excellent care of our health and well-being, providing remedies and local tricks to help keep us warm and feeling good during the trek. Every meal was more delicious than the last one - it was hard to believe that our chef was preparing our food over propane burners in our tent. The accommodations were comfortable and luxurious - comfortable beds and camp chairs for our afternoons and evenings after trekking. I would absolutely recommend TreXperience to anyone who is looking to hike the Inca trail but who would like to also have additional care and comfort while out on the trail.

I set up a private tour for 11 friends and my husband and I. We worked with Luciana at PV Travels in Peru. If there was a rating above Excellent I would happily give it. Luciana and everyone on the PV Travel team were truly exceptional. They were professional, friendly, efficient and if they could think of a way to go "above and beyone" they would do it with a smile. Everyone in our group had the best trip ever! I wish I could think of a comment that would give them an opportunity to improve, but they were just so good that I can't. We all fell in love with Peru because of the big hearts of our PV travel team. When you travel you hope that the experience lets you have experiences that truly change your heart. That is what we had. I feel different and better having met this group and adventured with them. So Thank you Tour Radar for having PV travel on your Peru team. I would instanly recommend Tour Radar because of PV travel. Regan Rowe

Huaca Pucllana pre-Incan Ruins

A huaca (pronounced wak’a) signifies a place of religious significance. The Lima culture built the Huaca Pucllana sometime between 200-700AD, hundreds of years before the Inca Empire. Today you can enjoy a gourmet dinner on a terrace overlooking the ruins, go on a tour through the ruins, or simply drive by and watch the contrasting modern buildings next to an archaeological wonder.

Peru is filled with archaeological ruins, scenic landscapes, and delicious flavors. Must-see places in Peru include:

Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in four or two days. The Inca Trail is a 500-year old pathway where the elite Incas once entered into the “Lost City of the Incas”. Plan with your Peru for Less travel advisor in advance, Inca Trail permits tend to sell out even 6-months in advance.

Cusco city has it all, archaeological ruins, colonial buildings, top-rated restaurants, and countless places to explore. Your Cusco City Tour will take you to the top highlights like Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, the Cusco Cathedral, and more.

Arequipa is a picturesque town and also the second-largest city in Peru. Local markets, beautifully built colonial architecture, and El Misti volcano are among the things you’ll see while walking the cobblestone streets of the white city.

Lake Titicaca

Sail on the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and step on the reed Uros and Taquile floating islands. Some of the best weavers are found in this area so pick up some Peruvian textiles here for unique souvenirs.

Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are mysterious geoglyphs and geometric shapes drawn onto the desert floor hundreds of years ago by the Nazca culture. Little is known about them nevertheless, the Nazca Lines inspire awe in those who take a flight over them.

Lima is a mixture of modern city living and historical significance. Here you’ll find Central restaurant (ranked #6 by 50 Worlds Best), UNESCO World Heritage sites like Historic City Center with the San Francisco Convent, and the best shopping in Peru.

Luxury Peru Holidays

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

It’s true  — Peru is considered one of the earliest cradles of civilization.

But what makes the country fascinating is that its thousand-plus-year-old history is not just relegated to its textbooks. It’s living and breathing in its people, culture and customs. As you unravel layer upon layer of this country’s glorious past on your Peru holiday, you can’t help but marvel at the strong and palpable link to its present.

Why visit Peru?

There’s no escaping the mystery and mystique surrounding Peru’s most famous attraction – the ruins of Machu Picchu while on holiday in Peru . The stories surrounding the ancient citadel are as captivating as its dramatic setting amid the Andes.

Continue to Cusco, the erstwhile capital of the Inca empire, where Spanish colonial history intermingles with native American heritage.

You’ll see instances of this everywhere — in charming colonial buildings and churches that have been built over Incan foundations and in its traditional cuisine that still retains the flavours of its native residents and colonizers.

The White City, Arequipa’s skyline is like no other and studded with volcanic mountains.

El Misti rises above majestically and overlooks the city’s historic UNESCO World Heritage city centre, world-class museums, stunning cathedrals, and bustling squares.

Lima, the capital city, is known for its explosive culinary scene, and no Peru holiday is complete without tastings of pisco sours and sampling the iconic Peruvian ceviche!

Did you know that Peru is one of just 17 countries globally that have been recognized as ‘megadiverse’? A short drive from Cusco, Arequipa and Lima will bring you face to face with some of Peru’s 2000+ animal, bird and reptile species, including llamas, alpacas and jaguars, the Andean cock of the rock, and even penguins!

Things to know before you travel to Peru

  • Flights from London into Lima take around 15-16 hours.
  • The official currency of Lima is Peruvian Sol (PEN).
  • British citizens do not need a visa to travel to Peru. They can stay up to 90 days in the country for tourism purposes.
