Getting to and around Colombia

Medellin Airport:

It takes around an hour to get into the city center from Jose Maria Cordoba International Airport, which is around 40 miles away from the city itself. One of the cheapest ways to get into the city is to get the official airport bus. If you turn right as you leave the airport and walk down the path you’ll come across a white bus. It’s small and can be very crowded but it’s certainly cheaper than a taxi, and also reliable, as it runs until 9pm. If you can’t get the bus or would rather not, then the most convenient way of travel is a taxi. You can find the taxis outside of arrivals.

Bogota is the capital of Colombia so getting from the airport to the center of the city is relatively painless. The most convenient method of transportation is to hail a taxi. First of you’ll need to go to a stand where you’ll explain where you want to go. You’ll be given a ticket which states the price and then you can go and tell a taxi driver your destination. At the end of your journey you’ll simply have to pay the indicated fee on your ticket. The second option of choice is to get a bus. You’ll find the ‘paradero’, or bus stop, a few meters away from the entrance to the airport. The downside to getting a bus is if you’re not familiar with the city you could end up getting dropped off anywhere. It’s a huge place in which to get lost. That said, most drivers are friendly and will help you where they can.

Columbia’s urban core is pedestrian-friendly and taxicabs can be found near the hotels and waterfront. Although the city has a decent bus system, it is scheduled and routed to meet the needs of local citizens; tourist destinations are not well-served. Many tourists choose to rent a car, particularly if planning to visit the city’s surrounding parklands.

Domestic flights are the most convenient and also the safest way to get around the country. Colombia has one of the best developed airline networks of all South American countries.

Be cautious with all other types of transport. There is no train service in the country, but there are various different types of bus and taxis that service all the main towns. Check the route you plan to travel before you set off and secure all your possessions.

For a bit of adventure, take a cargo boat along the Magdalena River. This is a slow way to travel, but offers views of the country you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.

Tips for your stay in Colombia

  • Before traveling anywhere in Colombia it is vital that you check the travel advice and warnings. Take extra special care of your possessions when traveling, avoid travelling at night if possible, and always make sure that the route you plan to take has not been subject to attacks from bandits in recent months. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance, which includes all types of theft.
  • Bogota is a vibrant city, but one that can feel daunting to the tourist on arrival. To get oriented, head to the central Plaza Bolivar in the heart of the historical part of town. Named after Simon Bolivar, the square contains his statue, as well as the Justice Palace, the National Capitol and the Primate Cathedral. Visit the sights, or just relax on one of the benches.
  • The coastal walled city of Cartagena is more picturesque, with brightly painted buildings and numerous avenues and villas. The old city wall remains in place round most of the old town and you can walk along it. The views of the sea and the city are impressive. The modern part of the town, Bocagrande, has most of the hotels and also the beaches.
  • The Ciudad Perdida in Sierra Nevada translates to “The Lost City.” It was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and discovered only in 1972. The city is made up of more than 150 terraces that have been carved into the mountainside. The city can only be accessed by a substantial trek (at least six days). The trek itself is tiring, but there are chances to stop along the way, admire the views and swim in the occasional waterfall.
  • English is understood to some extent in most tourist regions, but speaking at least a little Spanish is essential. Learn basic greetings as a minimum for courtesy—as long as you are polite and friendly, everything else can be mimed if necessary. For travel outside tourist areas, Spanish is essential.

Finding Flights from Colombia

Bogota is a huge city when you consider that the only North American cities larger than Bogota are Mexico City and New York City. It takes about 20 minutes from downtown to get to El Dorado International Airport (IATA: BOG) via taxi when traffic is good.

The taxis in Bogota are regulated, making fares reasonably priced and safe. You order a taxi at a stand, pointing out your destination. A ticket is printed with the price for the ride. Once you pick up a taxi and arrive at the airport, you only pay the price printed on the ticket. The typical range for a taxi is COP20,000 up to COP35,000, or approximately $7 to $12 in U.S. currency.

Another safe and convenient way to the airport is via the sophisticated bus rapid transit (BRT) system that runs directly to the airport along El Dorado Avenue. However, the system is limited to those with “small luggage.”

Choose a private transportation company such as Moveco or Tedecol with easy online scheduling for a comfortable and reliable trip to the airport.

However, these direct flights can be quite long, with an average flight time of around 16 to 20 hours, depending on the route and the airline chosen.

Frequently asked questions

  • The trick to having an amazing travel experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, boarding pass, credit cards and important medications. Next, bring items that’ll help while away those hours, like some electronic devices or a juicy novel. You’ll also want to bring your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Last but not least, don’t forget to toss in toiletry items like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a fresh change of clothes.
  • Make sure you don’t have a sharp object hiding in one of the compartments of your hand luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable products, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • The long, narrow aisles of an airplane are not the place for a fashion parade. Layer yourself up with comfortable clothes and remember to take a cardigan as it tends to get cool in the cabin. Slightly roomy, flat shoes are also a sensible choice.
  • A condition by the name of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a risk on long-haul flights. It’s the result of blood clotting due to poor circulation and inactivity. Walking up and down the aisle and doing foot and leg exercises in your seat helps to prevent this happening. Wearing a good-quality pair of compression tights or socks is also recommended.
  • Security personnel first need to see that you have a valid ID and matching boarding pass before anything else. Have them ready for inspection.
  • After that, both you and your hand luggage must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Items such as your belt, coat and headphones will be required to go through the machine.
  • Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don’t worry though, you’ll be back online soon enough.
  • Want to bring along your favorite hand cream? No problem. As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a clear zip-lock bag, it’s fine to bring with you on board.
  • Lightweight sneakers are a sensible footwear choice as you’re less likely to be required to remove them when going through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
  • Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them safely away in your checked baggage. They won’t be allowed in the cabin.

Move Over Medellin! This Unknown City Is One Of The Cheapest Destinations In Colombia

Post may contain affiliate links; we may receive compensation if you click links to those products. This has no impact on how offers are presented. Our site does not include all offers available. Content on page accurate as of posting date.

It goes without saying how popular Medellin has become over the years.

Although, it does have its fair share of drawbacks .

Expats have long viewed Medellin as a budget-friendly haven where they can live life on the cheap in phenomenal weather, scenery, and culture.

Even more so now that the digital nomad craze has taken over the planet making this city one of the most alluring in Latin America.

But…it's time to pump the brakes. There is another attractive Colombian city rarely ever discussed. In fact, it's safe to say many don't know it exists.

To make matters even more confusing, it shares its name with another country.

The underrated city of Armenia is quite possibly the most overlooked city in Colombia, and it's actually a huge draw.

Easy To Reach With Cheap, Direct Flights

How are there direct flights to a place nobody knows about?

Well, we're not here to solve life's mysteries, but we are here to tell you what you've been missing out on.

For the record, this is not a new flight announcement. Spirit has been the only U.S.-based carrier offering flights to Armenia, and it's been in service for years.

Spirit offers flights multiple days per week out of Fort Lauderdale (FLL). While we all know how airfare fluctuates, this particular airline is best known for savings above all else, even as they were just named the safest airline in America.

Even more reasons to fly this route as you zoom over Colombia's extravagant jagged mountains.

Scouring through random summer dates, it's easy to find round-trip airfare between $200 – $300 with more options to connect from another city in Spirit's network.

A New Playground For Digital Nomads

As prices soar in the U.S., there was probably no better time for Forbes to release their '13 Exciting Places Where You Can Live For $1,500 A Month-Or Less' article .

And you know where this is heading…Armenia made the cut.

While Medellin used to be insanely affordable, with popularity comes higher prices.

Nowadays, travelers, whether in Medellin or another similar situation, find themselves more often than not seeking an alternative.

Armenia is such a spitting image of Medellin, both share the same nickname of the "eternal spring" city given the springlike weather year-round.

Weather is not the only draw, however. Despite some valid safety concerns, Colombia is a great option for digital nomads with one of the easiest visas to obtain .

Without a doubt, rather than visit the more popular cities, nomads' eyes should be set on Armenia with these eye-popping savings.

Living under $1500 is very doable with rent under $550 per month, and even cheaper outside the city limits.

Food bills are expected to hover around $200, leaving plenty of disposable income for a fun time in this lesser-known city.

Welcome To Coffee Country

Colombia is known for a lot of things, but perhaps the most relatable thing is coffee.

As a city of over 300,000, coffee is what keeps Armenia and the state of Quindio running in more ways than one.

Of course, the coffee scene only adds to the allure for digital nomads too as there are plenty of cafes to work from and plenty of caffeine to go around to keep you up during boring Zoom meetings.

What makes Armenia even more appealing is its authenticity, where you can cafe-hop all around and never find a Starbucks.

And why would you? As the region's economic engine, why ‘Americanize' a good thing?

Tourists can visit scenic coffee farms and even stay overnight in a cozy farmhouse to get a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of locals.

Armenia is not the only place to do so; there are ample delightful villages surrounding the city worth a visit. Escape the city life and immerse yourself in the lush mountains with local farmers.

Popular tours are as low as $28 and top rated stays off-the-beaten path, such as Finca Hotel Café Bernal are under $50 per night.

By Jessica Puckett

Sometimes all the inspiration travelers need to book a far-flung getaway is a convenient new flight route from their home airport. This summer, there are plenty of international flights debuting at airports across America to get excited about. These flights, operated by both US carriers and international airlines , will ferry travelers to glamorous destinations in Europe, Asia, and South America. An added bonus: All of these routes are nonstop, meaning travelers can avoid pesky connections—and all the potential headaches that go with them.

Here are seven of the most exciting international flights launching from the US this summer that we can't wait to try for ourselves.

Copenhagen

Philadelphia to Copenhagen on American

This summer will mark the largest transatlantic route expansion for American Airlines since 2019. As part of that new lineup, the carrier will debut a first-time route from Philadelphia to Copenhagen on June 6. The new seasonal service will fly daily during the summer months and be operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This will be American’s only route to the Danish capital, allowing loyalists of the airline a direct route to walking along the iconic Nyhavn harbor—lined with traditional wooden boats and boldly colored buildings—as well as top-notch Scandinavian cuisine in the city’s dining scene , which is among the best in the world.

Chicago to Rome on ITA Airways

Flying from the middle of the country to Italy is easier than ever this summer: ITA Airways, Italy’s national flag carrier, launched a nonstop flight from Chicago to Rome in early April. The nine-hour flight to the Eternal City will operate year round, but daily service will be available during peak tourist season, from June 3 to September 29. The route will be operated by ITA’s sleek Airbus A330neo jets, which offers a comfortable business class cabin. Chicago is the seventh US gateway for the rapidly expanding Italian carrier, which was completely relaunched back in 2021, rebranding from the former national airline Alitalia.

Seattle to Taipei on Starlux

On August 16, Taiwan-based carrier Starlux will add its third US city to its route map when it launches flights from Seattle to Taipei. The upstart airline, which first debuted in the US in April 2023, has been making a name for itself with West Coast fliers as a “luxury airline” that offers a superior passenger experience on board. To operate the new journey, the airline will use its Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which is outfitted with four cabin classes. If you’re lucky enough to snag a first-class seat , get ready for an ultra-exclusive experience, as there are just four seats—all with privacy doors—in the super premium cabin.

Istanbul

Denver to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines

Coloradoans will be just one flight away from enjoying the wonders of Turkey when Turkish Airlines’ new route from Denver to Istanbul launches on June 11. From that day, roundtrip flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, departing Denver at 7:35 p.m. and arriving in Turkey’s largest city at about 4:30 p.m. local time; on July 11, a Sunday flight will also be added. The airline will use its Airbus A350-900 jets on the new route, which feature a stylish business class cabin and its famous flying chefs catering service. The new route—which clocks in at 6,130 miles and almost 12 hours—will nab the title of Denver airport’s longest flight.

Miami to Bogotá on Emirates

Fifth-freedom flights from the US aboard Emirates are rare, and when a new one launches, it’s definitely cause for travelers to celebrate. These routes allow passengers in a layover city to board the plane for the remainder of an international route without needing to pass through an international airline’s home country. They’re a great trick frequent fliers use to experience some of the best international cabins in the sky on shorter routes (potentially) for less money. And Emirates’ new flight from Miami to Bogotá—launching June 3—won’t disappoint. Operated by one of the carrier’s wide-body Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the route will make it much easier to fly from the US to South America in Emirates’ luxe first class or business class cabins.

Starting May 22, the New York-based airline will launch flights from JFK airport to the Scottish capital on board its Airbus A321neo planes. The aircraft comes with 16 of the airline’s Mint business class suites , which offer lie-flat seats, fully closing doors, and in-flight dining menus created with beloved Manhattan restaurants like Charlie Bird and Legacy Records. The new route will be seasonal, with roundtrip flights operating daily through September 30. Edinburgh is JetBlue’s fifth European destination. It also flies to Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, and London from Boston and New York.

Minneapolis to Dublin on Delta

Midwest travelers will have the perfect excuse for visiting Ireland when Delta launches its new route from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Dublin on May 9. The new seasonal service will operate five times per week, departing Minneapolis at 9:20 p.m. and arriving in Dublin at 10:50 a.m. local time. The airline will use a Boeing 767-300 plane on the route, outfitted with four levels of service, including the carrier’s business class product, Delta One, which offers lie-flat seats and dining perks like a build-your-own-sundae cart. Premium Select , which is Delta’s premium economy product, will be on board as well, with seats that are roomier and more comfortable than economy class and amenities like a welcome drink.

Top 5 airlines serving from Miami to Colombia

Copa performed as expected for the amount of money I was willing to spend for the flight; it wasn’t exceptional but it was not bad in any way either. The crew was good; friendly and straightforward. The food was airplane food, so no expectations there and the entertainment was lacking but that was my fault for owning an IPhone with a charging port that’s not compatible with the rest of the world. I’d fly Copa again.

Left my bags in origin city on a business class ticket , spent about 2-3 days in the same clothes plus the flight .

the planes are not modern there are no phone chargers

As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.

LOCKED MY BAG WITHOUT CONSENT. Had to have my zippers cut upon arrival in Costa Rica.

Everything was as you would expect in coach - fine. Flight was close to on time.

It was confusing because I got a notification that my gate was changed when in reality it wasn’t

No air in the middle rows. Had a hard time breathing. Was dying of heat.

Horrific checkin procedure with neither Delta nor Latam figuring out how to check me in. 4 hrs on customer support with both and both airlines pointing to each other who should do checking. I was not checked in until morning of flight, which for international flight is concerning.

It was a good experience, the flight was a little too long & the food was ok

Awful, horrible customer service. Flight got delayed and had to spend y the night in Bogota as a result. Very poor

Hostile flight attendants. Second flight with Jose so much better. Arrived 1/2 hour early. Thanks.

the flight from Boston to Curitiba was on time actually 30 minutes earlier. latam was not able to unload the luggage for custom checkup in Sao Paulo ii took two and half hours . i missed the flight to Curitiba spend the night in hotel and then flying in the morning to Curitiba

Tough flight with turbulence… I was told by a fellow passenger that it is common. Nonetheless, very stressful. Cordial staff.

Very unprofessional staff in the checking and boarding. There was no space for my carry-on bag, which is understandable for a full flight. However, the rudeness in answering my questions about my bag were unnecessary. Shaming and threatening a passenger to be left behind was something I had never experienced (I am 57 years old and a Skymiles member) before. At a minimum, the boarding staff (Krystal Mejia and her manager Dee) should undergo further training on cultural sensitivity and professional skills on speaking with passengers. Krystal, just because I have dark hair and “look Latina” does not mean I can speak Spanish. Your assumption and threatening words until the very ending of my boarding (door of the airplane) were not only unnecessary and stressful but something that a passenger should not experience before boarding.

The personal at the front desk in Manaos was awesome, I have never experience anything like that before, the person who attended me deserves to have a promotion I still remember him, very educated, kind but overall he could put himself on your position

More than 3 hours of delay and not even a snack was given.

GOL made the flight experience a true delight. Everything was smooth, from the check in process, to the disembarking moment.

There was absolutely no food or drink service unless it was paid for. I am not used to this.

No complimentary food and beverage (water, soda, coffe) is offered for a six and a half hours long international flight, not even in premium economy, just to try to squeeze a few more dollars out of the passengers. First and last time flying with Avianca.

No complimentary food and beverage (water, soda, coffe) is offered for a six and a half hours long international flight, not even in premium economy, just to try to squeeze a few more dollars out of the passengers. Same happened in the connecting flight, which was three and a half hours long (Bogota x Miami). First and last time flying with Avianca.

No complimentary snacks food, beverage (not even water), pillow and blanket on a 6 hours long flight (including economy comfort). A low form of nickeling an diming. Lost a recurring passanger over a soda. Avianca never again.

Every food and beverage has to be paid and the seat was not confortable. They even gave water.

Flight departure late. Got late in Colombia making us take a different flight next day. Avianca airport crew messed up my ticket so when a I got in Brazil I didn’t have a ticket for my destination. Had to buy a new ticket out of my pocket.

Avianca: you pay for a high-end flight and you fly like a low (very low) cost!

They gave my seat away although it was a connecting flight with them and the flight was a bit delayed.

Ac was broken so we deplaned, waited 2 hours, taxiing for takeoff they said the plane would not fly so we went back to the gate and got a new plane which took another hour. In all a 4 hour delay for an 80 min flight.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Terrible, oxygen masks were deployed mid-flight. We returned to airport. Took additional 12 hours to get home.

Was flying in premium eco and there were around 5-6 movies I wanted to watch and none of those could I play for some reasons. Not just me we checked w the person sitting next to me. Few of the movies were only playable :( Also that was not great that we couldn't upgrade to business however tried to, many times before the flight :(

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

I grand parents didn’t receive any special treatment they are seniors even i ask for wheelchair

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

Flight delayed 3 times due to maintenance (on exact same plane that had just brought us from Boston to Miami). Eventually changed to a different plane and gate.

Flight kept delayed from morning to late afternoon so I had to make other arrangements

The crew was not great or professional. It seemed like they didn't really want to be there. A true lack of effort for accommodating customers.

I paid for WiFi, but it (WiFi) was very very slow, will never take again! Impossible open Utube 😤😤😤

My wife and I are both handicapped and at boarding they upgraded us to a seat closer to the front rather than all the way towards the back. Much appreciated.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

I paid just under 200 for flight and luggage, then paid 200 to change the flight, then paid 100 for a carry on. Then the cancelled the flight. Of the 500 I spent they refunded 250. I bought a delta flight for 270 never flew with spirit, but spirit kept 250, not even refunding the 100 for the carry on though they cancelled the flight (for weather on a day with only a slight rain ).

Flight attendants heavily pushed their affinity credit card. Very annoying

On time and fast. Overall it was a pleasant experience.
