Boston (formed in 1971) is a notoriously popular classic and arena rock band in the ‘70s and ‘80s, that have produced some of the fastest-selling records in history, hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.

At the same time as studying towards a master’s degree as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz met guitarist Barry Goudreau, and drummer Jim Masdea. After graduating Scholz built a recording studio in his home, recorded a number of demos with the help of Goudreau, Masdea, and vocalist Brad Delp, and by 1975 had recorded demoes for the songs “More Than a Feeling”, “Peace of Mind” and “Somethings About You”.

It wasn’t long before the band, still unnamed, started getting interest from promoters and labels, and after an audition with record company executives, signed with Epic Records. Masdea left the band around this time, however played drums on the re-recording of the track “Rock and Roll Band”. The band’s debut album, recorded mainly in Scholz’s home studio, was produced in Los Angeles by John Boylan, who suggested the group call themselves Boston.

The self-titled debut album “Boston” was released in 1976 and is one of the best-selling debut albums in U.S. history, with over 17 million records sold. The release showcased singer Brad Delp’s vocal delivery and mastermind Tom Scholz’s musical influences, and led to Boston opening for the likes of Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Foghart. The release shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the charting hits “More Than a Feeling”, “Long Time” and “Peace of Mind”.

Under pressure from label executives, Scholz reluctantly signed off on Boston’s sophomore full-length “Don’t Look Back” in 1978. The album shot to No. 1 once again, however unhappy with the rushed results, Scholz promised never to rush a record again. “Don’t Look Back” spawned the singles “A Man I’ll Never Be” and “Feeling Satisfied” and was supported by another extensive arena tour.

After lengthy court battles with both Epic Records and former co-manager Paul Ahern that delayed progress on Boston’s third album, the song “Amanda” was leaked in 1984. The track later became the lead single from the album “Third Stage”, which, like its predecessors found the top of the U.S. pop charts in 1986. Subsequent singles included “We’re Ready” and “Can’tcha Say”, which the band promoted on tour in 1987 and 1988. Eights years later after members had pursued solo projects, Boston reemerged with the album “Walk On” in 1994. It became the first album of the band’s not to chart within the Top Five, however the single “I Need Your Love” became a staple on U.S. rock radio stations.

The single “Corporate America” was released on mp3.com in 2002, and became the site’s most downloaded song. The single became the band’s title track for their fifth studio album, which was a vehicle for Schulz to express his disdain for the current corporate climate. A national tour ensued throughout 2003 and 2004, and in 2006 Boston released remastered versions of their first two albums. Eleven years later in 2013 Boston released the full-length album “Live, Love & Hope”, which charted at No. 37 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

Greek.. 07/14/2016

Band was great. Music in the Greek, unfortunately loses some of its power due to noise level restrictions. Not the best place to see them, but thoroughly enjoyed. Dennis Deyoung and his band opened up and sounded great. The venue is more suited to them. Definitely not Tommy Shaw/JY talent, but adequate.

Boston started the show as they usually do with "Rock and Roll Band" and then went though a few classics. When Gary Pihl was asking the audience if they wanted to hear new stuff or the classics, you can guess what the response was? 1 hour of great fun, dancing, singing along "COOL THE ENGINES". Then... Tom screwed it up. He always does a solo, but this time, appx 45 minutes. Even I, as a musician, got bored. He knows better. Looking around and standing in the middle of the venue, I could hear people talking among each other rather than listening to the music. After 20 minutes, many people left. Too bad. Why leave when you have this tremendous talent on stage who you get to see work maybe a handful of times in your life? Well, It is Los Angeles. People do have other things to do??? Idiots. When it was a little slow, go get a beer. Great finish. Tom Sholtz was flawless as usual. The new female singer, Beth Cohen, while talented, was less than impressive. Overall a good night.

Boston takes Cleveland by storm! The first 8 track I had was Boston's Boston and the second was Don't Look back. I would not be surprised if most people in the audience first heard Boston on 8 track, but I was presently surprised at how many younger fans were in the audience. Clearly products of their parents' music endeavors or at least their back seat endeavors.

No one, however, was disappointed on Tuesday night when Boston took Cleveland by storm, as the wicked storm off the lack also approached. The rains came and didn't subside, nor did the band. They rocked through 21+ songs with the audience on their feet most of the show.

I go to 70+ concerts a year, and would be hard pressed to find one that was as fun as this show. The audience was wild for Boston, and they over-delivered. Whether you came from an age with this music in the late 70's or discovered the band much later, this is a great show with really enthusiastic performances by everyone on stage. "Its been such a long time", but well worth the wait! Thank you Boston for a great show and certainly not letting the weather impact a second of your performance.

Fantastic show. Band sounded great and it was overall a really good set list. Always a joy to see Tom Scholz and he still sounds brilliant on guitar and keys. Everyone in his band delivered.

My only suggestion would have been to alternate more classics near the last quarter of the set. They were classics heavy in the beginning of the set, but near the end there were several songs in a row from the more recent albums, and for most of the audience these were essentially unknown tunes. Not saying they shouldn't play them, but just alternate one newer tune with a classic.

The other bands - Rick Derringer and Don Felder sounded fantastic as well. The principal band members (Tom Scholz, Felder, Derringer) are all in their mid to late 60s and they're holding up really well. The Felder set was essentially an Eagles set, with just one non Eagles tune (SRV's Pride & Joy). Felder's band is a few decades younger than him and they all nailed their parts. It was cool to see Brian Tichy on drums. We knew him from BIlly Idol's band, and he cowrote most of my favorite Billy Idol album, "Devil's Playground."

Boston was awesome live. It's definitely been a while since their hits have come out, but they still rock. Hits from their three major albums, 1) Boston, 2) Don’t Look Back, and 3) The Third Stage color their set with melodious, comforting, and nostalgic tunes. While I didn’t grow up with this music, I felt like I was back in the seventies, rocking out to the hits of the day. I would also say that I’m not a huge classic rock fan, but there was something about Boston and the band’s current make up that added an extra bit of flair to the old hits. And the current drummer, Jeff Neal, is phenomenal. Worth the price of admission just to see him thrash. While the jettison from Boston (1989) and subsequent death of Brad Delp (2007), the former lead singer and voice of Boston, caused a major shift in what the band represents, I would say their sound is still comparable to what we've come to know and love from them. So if you're looking for new stuff, I'd say you should pass on seeing a band like this. But if you like the oldies but goodies scene, this is a concert for you.

Massachusetts rock outfit Boston, named after their place of origin achieved huge success in the 70's and 80's in both the States and the UK. Having formed nearly 40 years ago, the veteran rockers still delight audience with shows made up heavily of material from their first three successful albums.

Starting with a blazing rendition of 'Rock & Roll Band',

'Smokin'', 'Feelin' Satisfied' and 'Last Day of School' in an almost back to back fashion, the crowd cheers loudly when they are finally allowed time to be heard. Lead singer Tom Scholz thanks the audience and explains it is their dedication that keeps the band touring globally and playing their classic music. A great introduction before fan favourite 'Life, Love & Hope'.

A combination of brilliant instrumentals and infectious stage persona makes Boston an even greater appreciated live act as they command a stage with ease. Big cheers come for hits such as 'Amanda' and 'Don't Look Back', yet the veteran rockers keeps the audience enthusiastic throughout the entirety of their career spanning show.

Boston is one of my all-time favorite bands so getting to see them in concert was a dream come through for me. They did not disappoint! Their performance was amazing: the lead singer is excellent, their sound was almost identical to the albums, and their instrumentals were incredible. I wasn't sure how I'd like the new band members, but they were excellent.

The show started out great! Joan Jett was amazing! Boston started out with a bang until they started playing a lot of slow songs in the middle. Their show was slightly under-tempo for me. The encore was good, though. That got everyone back on their feet and singing. Ive seen worse, but ive seen better.

The show was amazing. These guys make it look effortless even down some original members. I highly recommend their tour to small and big fans alike. The set list will be a walk down memory lane and demonstrate the continued staying power of their music for more tham 30 years.

Boston was as crisp as ever. Awesome concert, played a mixture of new and old. The lead singer, Tommy Decarlo is every bit as good as Brad Delp, and I am a real critic when it comes to changing lead singers. They sound as good as their studio CD's. Great job by all!

What a great concert.. What incredible musical talent... And the leads voice is exactly the same... Good rock and roll that takes you right back to the 70' and 80's.. Traveled to Atlanta for this concert... Totally worth it... And they are still all totally Hot!!

This was the thirteenth date of the “ Got Back ” tour and the first of two consecutive nights in Boston.

From Boston Herald , June 10, 2022:

Paul McCartney grabbed a guitar and tore through the tasty riff of “Let Me Roll It” before pushing his band into a stomping snippet of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” It rocked. With McCartney being a rock star, it would be expected that his Tuesday Fenway Park show would rock. But that’s not a given. Many musicians play huge shows that lean more on nostalgia than visceral rock ’n’ roll.  McCartney indulged in some nostalgia, but he spent more time rumbling through high volume, big energy rock — “Junior’s Farm” and “Get Back” and “Band on the Run.” McCartney gets an absurd amount of respect. He might deserve a bit more. People gleefully crow about Willie Nelson and Keith Richards’ immortality, but forget that McCartney will be 80 next week and still fills and thrills stadiums with two and a half-hour shows — he booked Fenway for back-to-back dates Tuesday and Wednesday. When Sir Paul first played Fenway back in 2009, he was a mere 67 and performed 34 songs. Tuesday night, the 79-year-old played two more in a set that ran from 1958 Quarrymen obscurity “In Spite of All the Danger” to songs off 2018 album “Egypt Station,” from rock to just about everything else. […] From wonderfully obligatory Beatles songs such as “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude” to the more obscure stuff (Wings’ jam “Letting Go” was nice), Paul had a blast. He grinned and shouted, did little dances and played half a dozen different instruments. He said he’ll be back. Hopefully he brings some new songs again next time. He has got to keep writing, got to keep adding material to a catalog that’s already astounding. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

From  paulmccartney.com , June 22, 2022:

Once again, Paul did it Fenway…  But seriously folks, as anyone who’s attended one of Paul’s previous plays at the fabled Fenway Park can tell you, there’s a unique spell that’s cast only by the unique combination of Paul’s music played live on the grounds of Boston’s Cathedral of Baseball. Over the course of those legendary nights—2009’s debut two-night stand or 2013 and 2016’s return visits—there have been too many highlights to count, with guest appearances ranging from The Dead’s Bob Weir on ‘Hi Hi Hi’ to an utterly unexpected Rob Gronkowski on ‘Helter Skelter’… the one constant being that mythical blend of McCartney Green Monster Magic.    Boston proved more than ready, willing and able to get back with Paul. From the crowds gathering early along the length of Lansdowne Street hoping to catch a glimpse of Paul’s arrival as he arrived through Fenway’s Gate C to the mass of fans in the stands who united to transform into a human billboard spanning the length of the field and spelling out “WE LOVE YOU PAUL,” Paul’s fifth and sixth Fenway gigs would prove every bit as extraordinary as his four prior ones — or as some who were there might argue, even more so.    “McCartney gets an absurd amount of respect,” night one had the Boston Herald proclaiming — and adding, “He might deserve a bit more.” Having borne witness to the sheer surplus of love and respect that emanated from both sold out Fenways, it’s hard to see how that would even be possible. Night one’s hordes came to Rock with a capital R, greeting the indelible riffs of ‘Let Me Roll It’, ‘Junior’s Farm’ and ‘Get Back’ with howls upon howls of approval. And those enthusiastic bursts of joy were by no means reserved for the barnstormers and guitar anthems of the McCartney canon—’Maybe I’m Amazed’ was audibly and visually uplifting and drew more than a few happy tears, ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!’ took Fenway on a laser guided trip, ‘Fuh You’ was singled out by both the Boston Globe and Herald (the latter likening the 2018 Egypt Station standout to “a 2020 Harry Styles smash,” clarifying “this is meant as a compliment”)—and during ‘Hey Jude’, there was even a reported sighting of John Kerry attempting to capture the moment on his phone. […] Steve Martin – Paul McCartney’s US publicist

boston tour 2022 band

Legendary rock and rollers The Who  took over the TD Garden on Wednesday night on a spectacular evening for music. Fans of all ages gathered in the arena to see the band return on the first leg of their 2022 North American Tour, and the energy was vibrant on all fronts.

Kicking things off would be singer songwriter Amythyst Kiah . Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kiah’s soulful energy captured the crowd immediately, with a strong sound and powerful vocals. With tracks like “Sleeping Queen”, “Wild Turkey”, and the anthemic “Black Myself”, Amethyst Kiah brought deep feelings of blues, especially in her lyrics. A short but exciting set that left the audience wanting for more.

It was time for The Who to take the stage, and the second they walked out it as clear everyone in the room was standing in front of legends. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were joined on stage by a 48 piece orchestra assembled by local musicians in its entirety, led by conductor Keith Levenson. The stunning setup and monumental sound took the audience aback, working its way up to the first big moment of the night, Tommy ‘s “Pinball Wizard”. Daltrey’s signature mic swinging matched Townshend’s iconic playing stance, making the crowd wild every single time. The show would be divided into sections, with the band playing on their own for tracks like “The Seeker” and “You Better You Bet”. One of the highlights of the night was the build up to Roger Daltrey’s piercing scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, followed by “Behind Blue Eyes”.

Townshend would introduce the Quadrophenia album section of the show, kicking off with “The Real Me”, all the way up to “Love, Reign O’er Me”. Another highlight would be the instrumental “The Rock”, not only showcasing all performers on stage, but also matching a video montage of historical events that would include nods to drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle, as a tribute to their untimely passings. The closer would be the iconic “Baba O’Riley”, as well as a quick Happy Birthday to Pete Townshend, on the eve of his 77th birthday.

It’s not often that we get to be in the presence of rock royalty, and Wednesday night was yet another opportunity to experience a band like The Who, proof of their sheer power and longevity across all generations. Make sure to catch them in a city near you .

Artists and fans mark Bandcamp Fridays on their calendars

Roughly 80 percent of Divine Sweater's monthly Bandcamp revenue stems from first-Friday-of-the-month sales, guitarist Sean Seaver says.

Sound Check is the Globe’s weekly guide to concerts, tunes, and trends rooted in Boston and beyond. This column covers April 26-May 2.

Ask musicians to name one positive development from the COVID pandemic, and chances are they’ll either scoff or mention Bandcamp Fridays.

Launched in March 2020, Bandcamp Fridays initially boosted artists’ profits during a financially dire period for the music industry. Bandcamp (an audio distribution platform) offered to waive its share of merchandise and music sales on the first Friday of most months. Four years later, the initiative has snowballed into $120 million in the coffers of independent artists and labels. That figure will grow again on May 3, the 40th Bandcamp Friday to date.

During the pandemic, the extra revenue provided a life raft for musicians who had relied on live performances to provide for themselves and their families. Now that touring is back on the table, and fans can once again support bands through ticket and merchandise sales, the impact of Bandcamp Fridays isn’t as palpable in 2024. However, that doesn’t mean artists and fans are overlooking Bandcamp’s monthly tradition; even a trickle of extra money can help fund merch restocks, studio time, and tours.

For instance, it’s no coincidence that Boston glam punks Linnea’s Garden frequently release new music on the first Friday of any given month. Frontwoman Linnea Herzog says the deliberate alignment helps the band optimize post-pandemic Bandcamp Fridays, as fans tend to purchase new music the day it drops.

Listeners can be just as strategic, often waiting until Bandcamp Friday to make purchases so bands like Divine Sweater will receive 100 percent of the sale. Sean Seaver , guitarist of the local indie rock band, reports that roughly 80 percent of their monthly Bandcamp revenue stems from first-Friday sales.

Mark Erelli says Bandcamp Fridays provided a big boost to him during the pandemic but sales have tapered off considerably since.

Not every artist sees such a dramatic monthly spike. Mark Erelli , one of Boston’s most celebrated singer-songwriters, says the recent response to Bandcamp Fridays pales in comparison to his experiences in 2020, when the initiative boosted revenue for his then-new record “Blindsided.” These days, he rarely mentions Bandcamp Fridays to his followers and instead encourages them to purchase physical media year-round.

“For me, it’s really dropped off,” Erelli says, noting that these days he’s lucky to sell one or two items every Bandcamp Friday. Nevertheless, the handful of deliberately timed sales represent a level of loyalty that he doesn’t take for granted.

“I do feel that the people who pay attention to Bandcamp Fridays are among the most invested, discerning music lovers out there,” he concludes. “I’d rather 50 or 100 of those types of fans than the more fickle kind that doesn’t really stay on the ride with me.”

St. Louis rapper Sexyy Red will be seeing scarlet at Boston University when she visits the Agganis Arena on Saturday . The performance is part of her “2024 Spring Semester” tour through various US colleges and her only stop in New England.

Wisp transports her magnetic shoegaze from San Francisco to the Sinclair on Saturday , culling sludgy gems from her new EP “Pandora”; Cairo-born instrumentalist Ash lightens the room on Sunday with his February record “Self-Discovery,” which layers lavish sounds and textures from his Egyptian and French background.

The Boston DJ crew will host a “Vegas Baby” dance party on Saturday , complete with casino games and acts from the Boston Circus Guild. On Thursday, the Decemberists treat fans to new singles “Burial Ground” and “Joan in the Garden,” both from their upcoming June album “As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again.”

New York rapper Skyzoo taps an impressive roster of local hip-hop to support his show at Sonia on Sunday , welcoming to the stage Termanology and Reks — who both hail from Lawrence — plus Boston’s Bakari J.B . and Rayel of Portsmouth, N.H.

After releasing music with his Los Angeles band the C.I.A. in 2023, garage rock giant Ty Segall revamps his solo career at Royale on Wednesday . Segall’s January album “Three Bells” extends his prolific discography, which spans 16 years and 15 records’ worth of fuzzy, off-kilter riffs.

Brighton Music Hall welcomes mononymous rappers Kyle and Giggs this week; Kyle provides beaming pop-rap and California-grown optimism on Tuesday with his new album “SMYLE AGAIN,” while Giggs flexes his catalog of road rap on Thursday for his “Zero Tolerance” North American tour.

NOW SPINNING

Crooked Coast , “One Hundred.” Cape Cod outfit Crooked Coast share an outpouring of gritty, pop-punk gratitude on their new single, which arrives one day before their headlining set Saturday at Brighton Music Hall . “We don’t have anything/But we have it all” singer and guitarist Luke Vose proclaims on the refrain, exhibiting a “rich in life” attitude that’s infectious as the chorus itself.

Kyshona , “Legacy.” Kyshona nurtures the myriad branches of her family tree with this remarkably thorough tribute to her ancestors. The Nashville artist’s undulating blend of soul and blues sweeps through past generations, wending between songs written for diligent great-great-great grandparents (“The Echo”), her peacock-mumu-clad grandmother (“Alma Ree”), and her own childhood joy (“Where I Started From”).

St. Vincent , “All Born Screaming.” St. Vincent’s newest era began not with a scream but a jarring wall of guitar on “Broken Man,” the first single and tone-setter for her seventh studio album. The follow-up to 2021′s “Daddy’s Home” is what St. Vincent describes as “post-plague pop,” a newfangled genre defined by her tempestuous clashes of instrumentation and brilliantly dour storytelling.

BONUS TRACK

On Saturday , Stoneham’s First Congregational Church hosts the premiere of “Don’t Forget to Leave,” a documentary chronicling the life of late Boston emo and punk musician Tim Landers . The new film pieces together Landers’s legacy in the Massachusetts music scene — including his time in bands such as Transit and Cold Collective — through interviews with his family, mental health professionals, and artists like Frank Turner and The Story So Far . Bob Heil, Whose Innovations Enhanced the Sound of Rock, Dies at 83

A groundbreaking audio engineer, he provided the large-scale systems that brought tours by the Who and the Grateful Dead to life.

A black-and-white photo of Bob Heil, a man with shoulder-length hair and a light-colored short-sleeved shirt, stands next to a piece of audio equipment.

By Alex Williams

Bob Heil’s career as a groundbreaking sound engineer who brought thunder and rich sonic coloring to tours by rock titans like the Grateful Dead and the Who began behind a pipe organ in a 1920s movie palace.

Mr. Heil, who helped usher rock into its arena-shaking era by designing elaborate sound systems that allowed rock juggernauts of the late 1960s and ’70s to play at volcanic volumes, first learned to appreciate the full spectrum of musical tones as a teenager, when he took a job playing the massive Wurlitzer pipe organ at the opulent Fox Theater in St. Louis.

“We had to voice and tune 3,500 pipes, from one inch to 32 feet,” he said in a 2022 video interview with the audio entrepreneur Ken Berger. “Voicing taught me to listen. Very few people know how to listen. Listening, you’ve got to mentally go in and dissect.”

Mr. Heil died on Feb. 28 of cancer in a hospital in Belleville, Ill., his daughter Julie Staley said. He was 83. His death was not widely reported at the time.

Although he worked behind the scenes, Mr. Heil was enough of a force that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland credited him with “ creating the template for modern rock sound systems” In 2006, the Hall installed a public display containing his mixing boards, speakers and other items.

“The concert business became what it is today because he made the experience so much better for the customers,” Howard Kramer, who at the time was the Hall of Fame’s curatorial director, said in an interview that year with The Houston Chronicle. “No one made the leaps in live sound that he did.”

Mr. Heil got started in the business in 1966. Up to that point, top rock ’n’ roll bands often had to rely on feeble sound systems that were drowned out by screaming fans. That roar, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote in his 2010 autobiography, “Life,” was often so deafening in the band’s early days that audiences could hear nothing more than the drums: “We used to play ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ some nights, and the audience didn’t know any different.”

Mr. Heil gave rock shows the sound arsenal they needed. “We were the first company back then to build a package P.A .,” he said in a 2008 interview with the audio magazine TapeOp. “You could come to Heil Sound in 1972 and leave the facility with a complete system: snakes, road cases, everything — even a modular mixer.”

He also put a distinctive stamp on 1970s rock with the Heil Talk Box, an effects pedal that transformed guitar parts and vocals into an interstellar drone. Joe Walsh used it in memorable fashion on his hit “Rocky Mountain Way” in 1973, and the Talk Box was a signature of Peter Frampton’s monster-selling 1976 double album, “Frampton Comes Alive!”

Mr. Heil’s career took a major turn in 1971, he told Mr. Berger, when a manager for the Who frantically called him in St. Louis, asking if he could get his crew to Boston the next day. The opening show there, part of the band’s tour in support of its hallowed album “Who’s Next,” had been a disaster, with one newspaper noting that the band’s “soaring brand of rock could not be heard” under the venue’s “miserable conditions.”

Roger Daltrey, the band’s lead singer, threatened to fly back to England until Mr. Heil arrived with his rig. When Mr. Daltrey “did the sound check,” Mr. Heil recalled, “it was OK, because it was a monster P.A.” He would work with the Who for the next decade.

Robert Gene Heil was born Oct. 5, 1940, in St. Louis, the elder of two children of Robert and LaVerna (Bills) Heil. His parents owned a clothing shop in the small town of Marissa, Ill., about 40 miles east of St. Louis.

As a youth, Bob not only played the accordion and the organ but also became a ham radio enthusiast, which gave him an early opportunity to fiddle with electronics. After graduating from Marissa Township High School in 1958, he spent time studying at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and the St. Louis Institute of Music.

In 1966 he opened Ye Olde Music Shop in Marissa, where he rented Hammond organs and repaired instruments for professional musicians. He also began to design his own audio systems.

Before long, he was supplying them to country acts like Dolly Parton and Little Jimmy Dickens as they came through St. Louis. His big break came in 1970, when management of his old employer, the Fox Theater, called him and told them of a crisis: The Grateful Dead was set to play there, but the band’s P.A. system had been confiscated by authorities in a drug raid.

On a subsequent call with Mr. Heil, Jerry Garcia, the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist, “almost dropped the phone” when he learned that Mr. Heil had a sophisticated system featuring an amplifier by McIntosh, the high-end audiophile brand, Mr. Heil told Mr. Berger. Performing Musician magazine later called the resulting concert “the night that modern live sound was born.”

In addition to his daughter Ms. Staley, Mr. Heil is survived by his wife, Sarah (Benton) Heil; another daughter, Barbara Hartley; a stepson, Ash Levitt, the president and chief executive of Heil Sound; a sister, Barbara Schneidewind; and seven grandchildren. Both daughters are from his first marriage, to Judy Mortensen, which ended in divorce.

By 1980, Mr. Heil had grown weary of life on the road, so he created a new line of headsets and microphones for the ham radio industry. At one point, Joe Walsh, another ham enthusiast, told him he wanted to use one of his microphones onstage.

Mr. Heil protested that the microphones were not concert quality. Mr. Walsh disagreed. “I was at his house and went downstairs to his little studio and he proved it to me,” Mr. Heil told TapeOp. “So I had to start listening all over again.”
