Minot, North Dakota may be best known for being home to the Minot Air Force Base, the North Dakota State Fair or the annual Norsk Høstfest , but there’s so much more to the community. The town formed in the late 1880’s as a winter camp for the Great Northern Railway and has been a thriving community ever since. As a smaller town that still offers a lot to do, Minot is the best of both worlds. On our recent visit, we explored great food stops, attractions, nature trails and local shops and had a blast. Where to Stay: Hampton Inn

The Hampton Inn is conveniently located by the airport and only a five minute drive from the main area. We stayed in a suite which was perfect for our family of three. The room was spacious and clean and the staff was friendly. As the top rated hotel in Minot, The Hampton Inn is a great stay and we would definitely stay there again. There is breakfast included as well.

Of all the things to do in Minot, make sure to enjoy the great food spots. All of these spots are within a 5-10 minute drive of each other so you could easily map out a fun foodie tour during your stay.

• The Station Coffee : a must for great drinks and healthy fare. I loved their matcha, pizza-wich and salad. They also offer great breakfast options.
• Whiskey Nine : one of the best places for food and entertainment in town. You can enjoy great whiskey cocktails, have fun playing the golf simulators and dine on delicious food. The Coconut Curried Chicken and Creme Brulee Bread Pudding were both fantastic.
• Charlie’s Main Street Cafe : The oldest dining spot in Minot is Charlie’s, a classic, diner, and is a must visit. It’s been ranked one of the best diners in the US by Tasting Tables and as having the one of the best hot beef sandwiches in the US by USA Today.
• Guilty Sweets : while the instagram worthy beautiful photo backdrops may get your attention initially, the delicious treats are the real reason to visit!
• Jamaican Vybz Kitchen : one of the most popular restaurants in Minot, the Jamaican cuisine is delicious!
• Prairie Sky Breads : the perfect spot for a pastry (get the cardamom knot!), scones and a packed lunch to go! We brought our sandwiches to the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge for a picnic.
• The Starving Rooster : known for their great flatbreads, The Starving Rooster is a great spot for a casual meal. In addition to flatbread, we also enjoyed a soft pretzel and brick oven pizza.
• Mi Mexico – loved the authentic Mexican food and the vibes – there was live music when we visited.
• Ironhorse Kitchen and Bar : this was one place on our restaurant list we didn’t get to because they are closed on Sundays. Check them out if you’re visiting on another day of the week – their menu looks fantastic.

2. Enjoy nature at Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge

Just 30 minutes Northwest of Minot is the beautiful Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge area . We loved how peaceful the rolling green hills around Lake Darling were. A unique feature is the Upper Souris Auto Tour which is a one-way driving route with gorgeous views. We were the only car doing the drive when we visited so it felt like we had a peaceful sanctuary all to ourselves. There’s also a great walking path called The Oxbow Nature Trail that was perfect for our family to enjoy a short stroll.

3. Sip brews at Atypical Brewery

One of the coolest breweries I’ve been to is Atypical Brewery. The brewery feels like it’s straight out of Europe but interestingly was converted from an old gas station. They made the brews right on site and we loved sampling some unique flavors including London Fog one one of their two patio spaces. Their calendar is full of fun events like trivia, live music and food trucks.

4. Explore Scandinavian Heritage Park

One of the neatest parks I’ve visited on my travels is Scandinavian Heritage Park . The park honors the five Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) through many replicas and features.  The most striking features include a 25 foot tall Dala Horse, a real  Stabbur , a full-scale replica  Stave Church , the oldest house in North Dakota and a museum with incredible artifacts. Additionally, there are beautiful shaded picnic tables and water features to enjoy.

We were SO lucky to have a tour led by Martha, a volunteer of the park who’s a member of the Sons of Norway. She takes great pride in preserving her heritage and sharing it with others. If you visit, ask if Martha is there!

5. shop local boutiques.

Minot has great local shops that are a great addition to your visit. My favorites were:

Weekender – full of fun women’s apparel, accessories and home goods items. I loved the shop’s vibe and took home a French Girl lip tint.

The Foundry – this shop is a gem! They curate a large variety of beautiful locally made home goods. I purchased kitchen towels, a dish brush and bamboo soap holder. I would have purchased more but we had limited suitcase space for the trip home!

6. Tour the Dakota Territory Air Museum

Minot is well known for the Minot Air Force Base which opened in 1957 and nearly 30 years later the Dakota Territory Air Museum was founded to honor aviation history. The museum has an impressive collection of aircraft and memorabilia from the 1900’s and 2000’s. I especially loved the old Northwest Airlines memorabilia and seeing a plane that was used to fly solo across both poles. It’s a fun spot to enjoy history and a variety of impressive planes – some that even flew in world wars.

7. Play at the Magic City Discovery Center

A relatively new addition to Minot is the Magic City Discovery Center . Their mission is to “engage children and families in the magic of lifelong learning through discovery, creativity and play.” The space definitely feels magical with many fun areas for kids and their families to explore and play. There are 12 different galleries so there is plenty to explore.

8. Visit animals at Roosevelt Park Zoo

Minot is home to a Roosevelt Park Zoo which houses many beautiful animals. I enjoyed the interactive displays for kids to learn more about the animals. My favorite section was where the zebras and giraffes live. During our visit, three giraffes walked over right by my family and for about 10 minutes we enjoyed each others company.

We recently visited Minot, North Dakota and found it to be such a vibrant destination that deserves more attention than it currently gets.

Minot, North Dakota is most well known for its use during the prohibition era as “Little Chicago,” for being on the route from the US to Canada for rumrunners and more recently the home to an Air Force Base located just outside of the city. The population in Minot, North Dakota is just under 50,000 and is one of the largest in the state. Dubbed as the “Magic City,” named after its quick growth right after the city was founded turning from a tent city to 5000 occupants in just a few short months.

Where to Stay in Minot

If you plan on exploring any of the day trip options we recommend then you will want to rent a car, we personally like to rent cars with Expedia.

For the day trips from Minot that we recommend, we highly encourage  getting an SUV or larger vehicle with AWD or 4WD . While the places mentioned in our guide doesn’t require this vehicle we found that some of the roads are traveled more comfortably by having a bigger vehicle. Some of the roads we took are dirt and if you’re visiting in any season besides summer there’s a chance of snow in which you’ll want to have more control and a better vehicle for driving in these conditions.

Check out the Street Art

There are 16 murals in the downtown area of Minot that are all walking distance apart from eachother. The tourism office even has a visual map you can follow to find each mural. You can find it online or just wander aimlessly and find them on your own.

Don’t miss the “Magic City,” mural since that’s the nickname for the city and what to do in Minot if you want to take home a photo souvenir to remember your trip by! 

Scandinavian Heritage Park

The region is famous for its Scandinavian influence and heritage after an influx of Scandinavian settlers came to the area during the last half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. 

We were told the huge amount of Norwegians specifically flocked to this area because only the eldest men could be landowners in Norway, having land ‘up for grabs’ in the United States was attractive to many Norwegians who might not be able to own land themselves in their home country.

The Scandinavian Heritage Park celebrates the Scandinavian culture and influences in the area.

Our two favorite spots to visit in the Heritage Park were the Norweigan Gol Stave Church replica and the giant Swedish Dala Horse .

The replica of the Stave Church is especially interesting as there are as few as 28 left in Norway which is a stark comparison considering that around 1000 were built in the Middle Ages. The replica here is built after the Gol Stave Church in Norway. Be sure to go inside and admire the woodwork, plus it smells great!

Besides those two monuments, you can walk around and visit the other buildings and monuments erected here to honor each of the Scandinavian cultures and some of their most notable figures in history.

Don’t miss visiting the trolls either, there’s one inside the visitors center and Sigdal house.

Another great idea for what to do in Minot if you’re visiting in September is the famous Norsk Hostfest held annually at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in Minot, North Dakota celebrating the Scandinavian culture with festivities, performances, and other activities!

Note: The Scandinavian Heritage Park closes at 4 pm daily. This means you can’t enter any of the buildings but you can still walk the grounds after hours and enjoy the exterior of the buildings, statues, and monuments even after hours.

Saul’s Speakeasy

Their specialty is giving you a wine experience like you haven’t had before. Each of the wines they have here have their own special glass. Before visiting we had no idea that there were more kinds of wine glasses beyond red and white glasses.

There are all types of specialty wine glassware that is meant to be drank with very specific wines. They do the whole shebang here and will give you side by side tastings of wine in the proper glass and a regular glass, you can actually taste the difference.

Besides leaving learning something new you also have a chance of trying rare and expensive wines that you wouldn’t typically find at your average restaurant like Opus One using their special Coravin wine opener that lets you get a tasting of wine out of the bottle without actually opening it.

Now the tricky part is, you have to figure out how to not only find Saul’s but to get in! Text “Hi,” to 701 401-2105 to get a riddle you have to solve. Once you solve the riddle you get the password to enter located down the white staircase at 23 Main Street.

Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks

Another great idea for what to do in Minot if you love craft beer or nightlife is visit Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks.

For any beer lovers like us then you have to check out  Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks  for some delicious craft brews. Located in an adorable English cottage-style building that looks straight out of the Hobbit, you can sample all their different beers in tasting size or commit to a large pour.

This was our favorite brewery during our North Dakota trip!

Take a Walk on the Woodland Trail

This next thing for what to do in Minot, North Dakota is for anyone looking to escape the downtown area and enjoy the nearby scenery and nature. The Woodland Trail is a lovely manicured and well-kept trail just outside of the city limits.

You’ll see locals here walking their dogs and in the winter the trails are open for cross country skiers and snowshoeing.

The trail is in total 3 miles long along the Souris River and Highway 83 and was newly improved by the city. This is just a nice place to get some fresh air and be surrounded by some trees along the river for a leisurely walk.

Visit Minot’s Museums

Taube Museum of Art

Located in downtown Minot, North Dakota this museum is the local art museum with two galleries inside featuring artwork by local and regional artists. There’s also a gift shop selling local artwork. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:30 am – 5:30 pm, Saturdays 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Railroad Museum

Another one of the best things to do in Minot if you love museums is the Railroad Museum. Focusing on railroad history in the United States with exhibits featuring the railway history in the United States and how they impacted the cities and communities around them starting from 1886 to present day.

Hours: Saturday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm year-round

Day Trips from Minot 

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The park has 3 units, the North Unit, the South Unit, and the Elkhorn Ranch Unit. The most popular and most visited is the South Unit near Medora where Theodore Roosevelt’s cabin is. However, we are going to focus on the North Unit as this is the closest entrance to the park from Minot, North Dakota near Watford City.

The park has impressive scenic buttes, panoramic viewpoints, rock formations, and herds of wild animals like bison, feral horses, and bighorn sheep.

We recommend doing the 14-mile scenic drive through the North Unit through the badlands. There are two beautiful overlooks, River Bend Overlook, and Oxbow Overlook to stop among other stops like the Cannonball Rock formations.

If you plan on doing just the drive and overlook stops then plan for at least 1.5-2 hours in the park. There are also hiking trails for all levels from easy to strenuous to enjoy.

We were lucky to see both wild horses off in the distance from the River Bend Overlook and large groups of bison during our drive to Oxbow Overlook.

While seeing wild animals is pretty spectacular it’s important not to get out of the car or try to get close to the animals. These are wild animals and when provoked they have attacked and killed visitors.

Lake Sakakawea

Other great outdoor leisure activities include bird watching, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. 

One great place to enjoy many of these activities is from Tobacco Gardens Resort & Marina.  From here we met Peggy who is the one woman show behind this successful campground and outdoor recreational park. 

There are great trails in the area including the Birnt Hill trail along the water on the famous Lewis & Clark trail . This area was famously explored by the two expeditions and across from the Birnt Hill trail is where Meriwether Lewis was shot in the leg by accident hunting.

You can also rent boats and kayaks here to enjoy the scenery by water. This is also a great place for fishing.

If you want to extend your day trip you can also reserve a spot at Tobacco Garden’s campground.

Be aware that this western part of the state does have rattlesnakes, use precaution when on the trails!

Lake Metigoshe

Here you can enjoy incredible water activities like swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and water skiing in the summer and in the winter months this is where alot of ice fishing takes place.

If you’re lucky you’ll spot a moose as they are in the area and are often spotted in early mornings or at dusk. 

Some more great water activities and hiking trails can be enjoyed at Lake Metigoshe State Park. We did our kayaking from here on School Section Lake, a much smaller and quieter lake surrounded by nature. We even saw beaver and mink as we paddled around. Don’t forget your bug spray when you’re doing water activities in the warmer months.

Extend your day trip and stay overnight in a rental on the lake at La Casa Tortuga – Lake Metigoshe or Four Bedroom Cabin right on the water.

Also, check out Bottineau nearby for more great activities including the 21st century Stonehenge at Mystical Horizons, Pride Dairy for Ice Cream, and shops and restaurants in downtown Bottineau.

Best Attractions on an Epic North Dakota Road Trip

Much to my husband’s annoyance, a focus of mine this year – since I’m turning the big 4 0 – is to finish visiting every state in the United States. With only two to go, my fifty-before-forty goal will be complete this summer with a week to spare! Since I am so close, I just could not let this go. When I found out the Midwest Travel Network Conference was going to be in my 49th state, I immediately started doing some research. So here we are finishing up an epic North Dakota road trip, leaving only one more state on my list.

Ultimately, we found the drive-through state to be filled with outdoor adventure, quirky roadside attractions, authentic cowboy culture, revitalized urban spaces, and my favorite, unwavering kindness.

Follow along on I-94 as we discover all the best North Dakota attractions you should add to your trip itinerary when you decide to visit.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Theodore Roosevelt, often called the “conservation president,” played a major role in expanding the National Park system. We can thank him for the Antiquities Act of June 8, 1906, which enabled President Roosevelt and succeeding Presidents to proclaim historic landmarks, historic or prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest in federal ownership as national monuments.

Under his presidency, five national parks and four national monuments were established. And his love and respect of the rugged outdoors started in Dakota Territory.

He first came to the Badlands to hunt in 1883 and eventually built two ranches. Both of which you can still visit in North Dakota’s only national park with his namesake. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park covers 70,000 acres of sprawling natural beauty with winding waterways and painted canyons and should definitely make your North Dakota bucket list. 

MUST-SEE: South Unit 36-mile Loop Drive (*partially closed in the southern section due to road damage- check website for updates), Sunset at Wind Canyon, Painted Canyon Visitor Center Overlook, Ridgeline Nature Trail, Roosevelt’s Maltese Cross Ranch Cabin, Boicourt Trail, Buck Hill Trail, Oxbow Overlook, River Bend Overlook, Cannonball Concretions Pullout, 14-mile North Unit Scenic Byway.

Medora, North Dakota

When exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park book your stay in Medora, one of the “15 Best Small Towns to Visit,” according to Smithsonian Magazine. The delightful western town lies along the edge of the South Unit of the park and is home to two classic North Dakota experiences: The Medora Musical and Pitchfork Steak Fondue.

Performing all summer long outside among the breathtaking Badlands backdrop, the Medora Musical is a throwback to the Old Wild West days.

Take a seat at the open-air Burning Hills Amphitheatre and soak in the live show dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt’s time here. There’ll be snappy music, spirited dancing and even fireworks.

Pair your evening at the musical with a hearty meal cooked by cowboys. I never thought the words, “slap my steak on that pitchfork” would ever come out of my mouth but that was before I spent time in Medora North Dakota!

Come hungry because the steak also comes with fresh fruit, salad, coleslaw, vegetables, baked beans, garlic toast, baked potatoes, brownies, and cinnamon-sugar donuts served cafeteria-style.

Walk around and soak in the authenticity and charm of this small town. Take a selfie with Teddy, grab an ice cream cone, and pick up a souvenir or two.

Stop in the Little Missouri Saloon , established in 1883, where the door handles are pistols and the ceiling is draped in dollar bills. There’s even a small blackjack table tucked away in the corner. If it’s nice out, head upstairs to the outdoor patio for a bite to eat.

Enchanted Highway

Heading east through the state, take the detour south at exit 72 to the Enchanted Highway, a road turned into an outdoor art gallery. The 32-mile stretch of scrap metal sculptures will take you from the rural towns of Gladstone to Regent.

Local artist, Gary Greff, devised the project in 1989 and continues to add on to the artsy North Dakota roadside attractions.

Some of our favorites were the “Tin Family,” “Fisherman’s Dream,” and “Pheasants on the Prairie.”

TIP: If you want to make the drive extra special, plan to spend the night in Regent at the Enchanted Castle , co-owned by the creator of the metal sculptures.

New Salem Sue

Roll your way back to I-94 so you don’t miss the next crazy roadside oddity of Salem Sue, the world’s largest Holstein cow.

New Salem is rich in dairy farms and dang proud of it. At 36 feet high and 50 feet long, Salem Sue can be seen from five miles away. I couldn’t help but wonder how big her udders are!

Her presence shows that New Salem grows With milk-producers’ yields; We’ve got the cow, world’s largest cow That looks across our fields.

North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck

Your first stop in Bismarck should be the “Skyscraper of the Prairie,” the North Dakota State Capitol. The 19-story Art Deco building looks nothing like most of its counterparts across the country on the outside but is historical nonetheless.

Head inside, grab a self-guided pamphlet at the info center – if tours are not going on – and take a look around. You might be wondering what is North Dakota known for? Head to the ground floor to find out. The North Dakota’s Hall of Fame is where you’ll discover the who’s who of notable people from the state and what they’ve accomplished.

Walk up the stairs to the first floor while noticing the jet black Belgium marble along the wall leading you to the prominent North Dakota seal.

You’ll find yourself in the monumental Memorial Hall , where bright gold colored ornamental sculptures keep watch above the revolving doors. They depict the farming and mining communities so prevalent throughout North Dakota. Keeping with the agricultural theme, the huge chandeliers hanging overhead represent the head of wheat.

On the same floor, walk to the east side of the building to see the tower elevators that are adorned with bronze reliefs representing the pioneer experience.

Then zip on up to the 18th floor observation deck for fantastic views of the city.

And afterward, walk over to the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum , the official history museum of the state. Enter through the sleek glass atrium and take notice of the rare round stones planted at the front entrance. The cannonball concretions are unique formations from the Cannonball River in North Dakota.

MUST-SEE: Explore the Underwater World exhibit that has the world’s largest giant squid fossil, the Innovation Gallery that has a handpainted mural of Double Ditch Indian Village, a rare mummified dinosaur, and much more!

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park

Travel back in time during two specific time periods at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park . The museum at the Visitor Center gives a great introduction and in-depth look at the history of the area.

Then, delve into the 1500’s at On-A-Slant Indian Village where you’ll discover five reconstructed earthlodges. The Mandan tribe inhabited the confluence of the Missouri and Heart Rivers from the late 16th century until 1781.

Afterward, either walk or drive up to the Infantry Post. The blockhouses offer spectacular views of the Missouri river valley.

Then fast forward to 1875. Over 100 years later after the tribe had already left, the land became a military post. General George Custer and his wife lived here until his death.

Travel Tip: Plan for at least 3-4 hours. The state park surprised us as far as depth of information and walking trails.

Lewis and Clark Riverboat

One of the top attractions in Bismarck is the Lewis and Clark Riverboat tour. Float down the Missouri River and see what it was like back in the early days when riverboats were the major mode of transportation.

Begin your voyage at Keelboat Park on the 40-foot flat bottom boat as you feel American history come alive. Plan a sunset cruise like we did and you’ll have the glowing prairie sky meet the rippling waters edge for a perfect end of the evening.

Be on the lookout for the unusual four-headed Thunderbird statue located right on the banks of the river next to the parking lot for the boat. Built by students, the sculpture has an eerie kind of beauty to it.

Bismarck is one of those cities that will surprise you. We only planned for one overnight but wished we had designated another one to explore more.

If you like artsy things check out Art Alley located on 5th street halfway between Broadway and Main Avenues. It reminded me of Kansas City’s art scene a little bit. Turning ugly dark alleyways into colorful paths of genuine talent is a fantastic way to revitalize an area.

Frontier Village and the World’s Largest Buffalo

In case you haven’t seen enough buffalo yet, your next stop should be the World’s Largest Buffalo, Dakota Thunder. Standing tall over Jamestown since 1959 at 26-feet high and weighing in at 60 tons, it is quite a sight to see. Also, be on the lookout for the rare albino buffalo in the pasture below.

On your way to the concrete giant, you’ll pass by old pioneer buildings that were transplanted here from other parts of North Dakota.

Take a walk in and explore a little.

Lining the street is a trading post, saloon, barber shop, post office, church, and print shop all right out of an Old Wild West movie. I could almost hear the swinging doors and banging gunfights.

Fun Fact: Louis L’Amour, the American novelist who wrote Western books dedicated to life on the frontier, was born and raised in Jamestown. You can read more about him and his books at the Writer’s Shack.

Tower Travel Center

The Tower Travel Center is not just another truck stop, it is a pie destination. You read that right, this pit stop is more like a pie stop. Pies are made fresh daily with a wide selection to choose from. We planned on taking two to go but they didn’t make it out the door!

Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center

Our final stop is looking for fun things to do in Fargo North Dakota. Lying on the edge of the Minnesota – North Dakota border in a repurposed old grain elevator, you’ll find the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center.

It is not your typical tourist information center. Walk down the Celebrity Walk of Fame where names like Def Leppard, Dr. Ruth, Metallica, and Neil Diamond will jump out at you.

Then head inside for free popcorn, coffee, and a few photo ops like shoving a foot down in the renowned woodchipper from the cult classic, Fargo .

And if North Dakota is your 50th state, join the Best for Last Club. Young and old have joined the ranks from nine to ninety-nine years old. You’ll receive a commemorative t-shirt, an official certificate, sticker and a round of applause from the staff. If I had only gotten to Oregon first! DANG!

OTHER NOTABLE THINGS TO DO IN FARGO: Drekker Brewery, Sandy’s Donuts, Fargo Air Museum, and North Dakota University.

Is North Dakota worth visiting? Is there anything to see in North Dakota? That’s a hard YES. In fact, throughout our North Dakota road trip we found ourselves saying over and over again, the poor state gets a bad rap as boring but it is nothing close to that. There are so many unique things to do and authentic experiences to be had but maybe we should have kept that to ourselves so it doesn’t get overrun by tourists!

Totally wish I could have gone to the conference in Medora this year! TDNP has been on my bucket list for quite awhile. North Dakota sounds incredible!

It really was. Even when I was doing my research, I didn’t fully grasp what was out that way and just how beautiful it is. And how cool is it that the National Park isn’t busy?! So not used to that! Hopefully you’ll get out there soon!!

Jamestown actually has a lot of really beautiful walking trails, too! There’s a 10 mile white cloud trail, a 5 mile scenic overlook trail along the reservoir, 8 mile trail just out of town at pipestem with a 5 mile one way trail just next door at northridge/parkhurst (these are great for biking, and there’s even a bike race there every year).

Get out!? We will have to get back there and explore more!

It was 9 days – we spent a few in Theodore Roosevelt National Park/Medora and a few in Bismarck.

Hi Sylvia! We drove out to North Dakota but you can fly into Dickinson or Bismarck. We stayed in Medora (Badlands Motel but it is temporarily closed down, an alternative is the Rough Riders Hotel or the AmericInn), Bismarck, and Fargo – both cities have a variety of hotels to choose from. Named after the 26th president of the United States, who first came to the area in the late 19th century to hunt bison and fell in love with its rugged beauty, the park boasts over 70,000 acres of prairies, badlands, and winding rivers. 

Visitors can explore Theodore Roosevelt’s numerous hiking trails , which offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, or take a scenic drive along the 36-mile loop road that winds through the park. Along the way, you’ll likely encounter bison, elk, prairie dogs, and even wild horses that call the park home.

The Enchanted Highway is undoubtedly one of the quirkiest places to visit in North Dakota. It is a 32-mile stretch of road that features the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures, created by artist Gary Greff. 

Located just east of the town of Dickinson, the highway begins at Interstate 92 and runs south to the tiny town of Regent, North Dakota. 

The sculptures include the largest Tin Family in the world, a colorful school of fish, a grasshopper in a corn field, geese flying into the sun, and many others that are sure to leave visitors in awe.

Grand Forks is a charming town and an amazing place to visit in winter . There is no denying that it can get extremely cold in Grand Forks in winter. However, there are some amazing things to do there during that time of the year. 

Not only is it possible to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) over Grand Forks, but on many days the ice crystals in the air form so-called sun-halos. It is a beautiful phenomenon and truly a one-of-a-kind experience. 

Many seasonal activities, like a Santa’s Village and Ice Hockey Games make Grand Forks a fun destination to travel to. Check out the Japanese Gardens when covered under a layer of snow or eat some typical North Dakota fried pickles at the Toasted Frog.

Of course, a trip across the river to East Grand Forks is also a whole lot of fun.

Lake Sakakawea

Lake Sakakawea is a stunning natural reservoir that was created in 1953 when the Garrison Dam was first constructed. 

Over time, the surrounding area became Lake Sakakawea state park, which is one of the best state parks in North Dakota . If you can, try to visit in the summer when you can swim in the waters here and camp along the shores of the lake. You can also rent a boat since there is a great marina here too. 

But what this place is really known for is its incredible fishing opportunities since the lake is filled with everything from walleye to northern pike to chinook salmon. Therefore, avid fishers can make use of the on-site fish cleaning station and boat ramps to enjoy some of the best salmon fishing in the country. 

And when you’re not out on the lake, spend the day either biking or hiking along amazing trails like the North Country Trail, the Shoreline Trail, the Overlook Trail, and the Whitetail Loop. 

Finally, spend the evening relaxing in one of the park’s cute log cabins for just $60.00 per night.

Certainly, one of the most charming places to visit in North Dakota, Medora is the gateway town to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. 

A popular tourist destination for its Wild West feel and nightly Medora Musical performances during the summer months, Medora is not to be missed when traveling to North Dakota. 

The town is home to a variety of unique shops, restaurants, fudge and old-fashioned candy stores, and museums that offer a taste of the Wild West.

Additionally, on the edge of town the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of wealthy French settlers to North Dakota in the late 1800s.

If you visit Medora with kids , you’ll also find miniature golf, a point-to-point zipline, an awesome playground designed to look like a Wild West town, and even an optical illusions museum. 

Aside from sitting at the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, it is also the starting point of the Maah Daah Hey Trail , a 144-mile hiking and biking trail that runs through the Little Missouri National Grasslands. 

As you travel along Interstate 94 on a North Dakota road trip , plan to make a stop in Jamestown. As soon as you pull off the highway, you will see the towering sculpture of Dakota Thunder , the world’s largest buffalo. 

While North Dakota is known for its roadside attractions, there is more to Jamestown than just an iconic photo stop. The town is also home to the National Bison Museum and an old-fashioned Frontier Village. The National Bison Museum teaches about the natural history, cultural significance, and physiology of the North American Bison.

If you are heading to Theodore Roosevelt National Park on your trip, this is a perfect spot to learn more about the bison you will see in the park. 

But even if you don’t plan to visit the National Park, you have a chance to spot bison right here in Jamestown. The Museum maintains two bison herds, which are usually visible right off the highway.

Clustered right in the same area is the Frontier Village , which was created using original buildings from frontier villages across North Dakota, including a Northern Pacific Railroad Depot from 1880, along with a frontier school, church, and bank. If you visit from Thursday through Monday, there is also an opportunity to take a stagecoach ride through the village.

Visiting Jamestown doesn’t take long, and it is right off the highway and easy to get to, but budget on at least one hour. If you are short on time, you can just stop for a photo and a peek at the bison herd.

Lewis and Clark State Park

Lewis & Clark State Park is a beautiful outdoor space in Epping, North Dakota . It is situated on one of the upper bays of Lake Sakakawea.

The park offers great views of the rugged buttes of the North Dakota Badlands and is considered one of the best recreation areas in the state. It is named after the famous explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who camped nearby during their historic journey in 1805.

The park is an excellent destination for fishing and boating, with Lake Sakakawea being home to several fish species, including walleye, sauger, and northern pike. Families looking to cool off on a hot day can enjoy the park’s swimming beach, which has a nice sandy area for the kids to play.

One of several hiking options is the Lewis and Clark State Park South Trail: an easy 1.6-mile loop trail along the lake and through open fields and into the unique badlands’ terrain. The trail is well-maintained and consists mainly of a grass path.

If you’re planning to stay overnight, the park’s campground is the best option. The grounds are well-maintained and offer a range of amenities, such as playgrounds, restrooms, walking trails, boat launch, pavilions, beachfront, small general store, and a marina.

The Plover Loop section of the campground is especially nice, as it has over 800 trees providing ample shade.

The park also has two seasonal cabins, the Clark and Lewis cabins, which are located in the Bluebird Loop campground along the edge of Lake Sakakawea. The cabins are situated next to each other, providing a great option for families or groups of friends traveling together.

Dickinson, North Dakota is an overlooked gem in the Midwest. The city is home to several fascinating museums, including the Badlands Dinosaur Museum and the open-air Prairie Outpost Park.

Building relationships help dakota memorial school students thrive.

Helping students achieve success in the classroom and life is top priority at Dakota Memorial School on the campuses of Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in North Dakota.

Administrators and teachers at Dakota Memorial build trusting relationships with each student so they know they are supported, said Superintendent and Director of Education Tina DeGree with the Minot school.

“We want to push kids, as educators, but we also want them to know we support them and have that empathy that is needed as kids heal from traumatic experiences,” DeGree said.

Dakota Memorial schools are located on Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch properties in Minot, Bismarck and Fargo. Each school has a high school and middle school, while Minot has the only elementary school. Whether students live on campus or commute to school on the Ranch, the staff at Dakota Memorial are dedicated to meeting each student’s individual learning needs.

“In Minot we have about 60 kids and 21 of them are residential and close to 30-plus day program students,” DeGree said. “Our main focus is, one, the needs of each student at Dakota Memorial School.”

The students at Dakota Memorial School have access to counselors and therapists while simultaneously going to school. To do that requires balance as well as teamwork from the faculty and staff.

“We try to support the students as they go through their therapeutic treatment, which means we have the ups and downs that come with working through trauma,” DeGree said. “As our therapists help out students through that, we make sure we are responsive and personalized so that the kids know, if it was a really difficult session that we are responsive and understand that they may not be able to come back and do geometry.”

Students are referred to Dakota Memorial by their public schools. It requires a team of people who help students and their families find a fit that will best help them succeed.

“We are not meant to be a forever school. We are meant to be a transition school to really help the kids as they are working through their mental and physical traumas and then get them back to their home schools,” DeGree said.

Whether it is attention or diagnosis of different kinds, the students at Dakota Memorial tend to struggle in a more traditional public school setting; their time at Dakota Memorial helps them find ways to cope, handle and understand ways to enjoy and truly excel at learning.

“When kids come here there is a lot of collaboration between therapists, program managers, and the doctors, and our expertise in school, “ DeGree said. “The team becomes very responsive, so as we learn more about the students we make sure to mirror that in an educationally appropriate way. Everything we do has to be something that our students can take with them.”

Being able to find coping skills that are applicable to school as well as life after school is something they work hard to do at Dakota Memorial. Some ways to do this is simply finding classes or hobbies that students enjoy or are interested in.

“We offer a lot of electives as well, like coding and fashion design,” DeGree said. “We bring in community members so the kids can learn more about business and their community. We have graduates come back and visit with students as well, and it helps provide kids with ideas about what they want to do after school.”

The most important thing at Dakota Memorial School is the relationships they build and seeing the students excel.

“The kids are so amazing,” DeGree said. “You can walk up and down the halls and the teachers and staff can look at them and think, ‘Wow, that was something they were able to learn today.’ We know the small wins always form into bigger wins.

“We all just feel so privileged to be able to be a part of these students’ journey,” she added. “Being able to see them learn and thrive in an environment that suits their needs is very important to us.”

One of the most authentic Hispanic food places in Minot. They did a great job remodeling the old Captain Cove building. Dining room is clean and well lit although a little crowded. Menu is large with a lot of variety. Staff is friendly. Food is fantastic right down to the salsa. However, it is pretty expensive for a Minot restaurant. Many items are over $20. The food came quickly however we had to wave down a waiter twice for refills and silverware. My main complaint (maybe silly one) is about their dishes. They are pretty- but have huge bumps all over them making them awkward to eat off of. Overall this place is a great addition to Minot and I hope they can work out their little issues and stick around!

I ordered the Molcajete Cabron, my wife the chicken nachos look at the pic and look at the menu pic, even the other reviewers pics, mine was a dud, i was not too happy with it it looked like somebody forgot how to make it.

Came here for lunch with a friend and we were in the mood for Mexican, came here because it's the newest in town and have heard nothing but good things so why not try it out ? Parking was small, so take that into consideration. We came in a busy time but we were attended very quickly and seated! Atmosphere was lively and it was nice. I ordered a strawberry house margarita and my friend ordered a strawberry daiquiri. So let's begin with drinks! The daiquiri was made so well, but for the margarita it was way too strong for my liking, I couldn't even taste the strawberry. I've been to plenty of restaurants like this back in Florida so no big deal. But would've preferred it to be sweet and still with a kick. So with the food. I got tacos de carnitas and my friend got steak fajitas. Steak fajitas were so delicious! The carnitas on the other hand were okay. I only say that because here in Minot finding good carnitas is difficult. But also find it interesting that their three tacos don't come with beans and rice, you'd have to order them on the side. Never really seen that before. But over all the experience was okay! Will give this place another shot for sure because maybe it'll be different! Giving a 4/5 because the service was still great and my friend enjoyed his food.

SUPER expensive and the food was not near as good as other same cuisine restaurants in Minot. I am talking, cannot get a meal of any sort under $15. Charge $3.95 for each soft drink. Chips and salsa are meh. We at around noon and half got "breakfast burritos," which tasted similar to a gas station, but bigger. No sides. I was super disappointed and will not go back.

Wait staff was pleasant. Food was very bland and over priced. There was no flavor. We were charged $5.50 for chips and salsa. They put it on the table we did not ask for them. I will not be back.

Best Mexican restaurant in town!!! Food is fantastic, service is unmatched and the atmosphere is so fun! Music is incredible as well, all around great place to eat in Minot!
