Celebrate 50 Years of Hip-Hop With These 5 Upcoming Concerts

See dj kool herc, run-dmc, the wu-tang clan and more perform live this summer..

50 Years Anniversary Hip-Hop Concerts Tours New York Forest Hills Stadium Mableton Ampitheatre Tickets Dates Yankee Stadium Wu-Tang Clan Doug E Fresh Mary J blige Rakim

Although the 50th anniversary of hip-hop is technically this October – in step with the first time that the “Father of Hip-Hop” DJ Kool Herc mixed records live at a Bronx party – celebrations have been underway since the beginning of the year. From books chronicling the “Golden Era” of New York’s mixtapes from decades past to a Brooklyn library exhibition historicizing Jay-Z’s career, the music industry is brimming with projects paying tribute to both hip-hop’s progenitors and today’s contemporary artists.

Perhaps the best way to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, however, is to experience those making music history in real time. Over the next few months, a series of star-studded concerts and festivals are set to happen across the country, and while lots of rappers are holding their own solo concerts, a select few events will bring together defining artists and groups such as DJ Kool Herc himself, Run-DMC , the Wu-Tang Clan , Mary J. Blige and more.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop by seeing some masters of the craft and today’s newest hip-hop stars on tour. What began as a small back-to-school party thrown by two teen siblings living in the Bronx, would become the catalyst for the creation of hip-hop music and culture. From early records spun by a young Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc to the award-winning artists of today, this music genre created a space that recognizes and celebrates African-American art, fashion, media and culture overall. Check out the wide range of 2023 hip-hop concerts that have kept the legacy alive.

Hip-Hop Classics

Early hip-hop in the ‘70s was influenced by jazz and R&B artists like Nat King Cole and Nina Simone along with funk and disco stars like James Brown, Chaka Khan and Donna Summer. Early hip-hop figures like Grandmaster Flash and Jazzy Jay inspired a new wave of hip-hop to emerge in the ‘80s. Check out some hip-hop legends that are going on tour in 2023.

Snoop has been an iconic rapper and songwriter for almost 30 years. When his debut album, Doggystyle , was released in 1993, hits like “Gin and Juice” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)” instantly pushed Snoop into the spotlight. Since then, the rapper has recorded 19 studio albums, 25 mixtapes and 175 singles. His newest album, BODR , was released in 2022, which was the same year that Snoop was selected to perform at the Super Bowl along with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar. Make sure to get your Snoop Dogg tickets and catch his High School Reunion Tour with Wiz Khalifa, Warren G, Too $hort and Berner. With hits like “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” Snoop Doggy Dogg’s tour is one that you will not want to miss.

LL’s music career took off with his breakout single “I Need a Beat” and debut album, Radio , in 1985. His later albums like Bigger and Deffer (1987), Mama Said Knock You Out (1990) and Mr. Smith (1995) gained further success and prestige. His work has earned him multiple nominations and awards, like two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance and three Soul Train Music Awards. More recently, he became the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017 and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence in 2021.

After 30 years, LL Cool J is back with a headliner tour to the delight of his fans. He will be teaming up with DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Roots and DJ Z-Trip, along with a slew of special guests like Queen Latifah, Rick Ross and Ice-T on this star-studded tour. New Class of Hip-Hop Stars

The hip-hop music of today has evolved from its roots and branched out into genres like freestyle, hip-hop soul, pop rap and snap rap music. From the late ‘90s to the 2000s, the world saw a new wave of artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. Their contribution to the music scene has helped hip-hop to evolve further into trap music and mumble rap. The following artists are newcomers to the game that are going on to continue the innovation of hip-hop music.

“Rack City,” “Best Friend” and “Go Loko” are all hits you’ll hear with tickets to the Str8 To The Club Tour. Beginning this fall, YG , Tyga and Saweetie will embark on a joint headliner West Coast tour. Fans got a sample of  the joint album by YG and Tyga with the June release of “Platinum.” The Compton-based rappers paid tribute to their roots with the single, which has been hailed as a “defiant, California-inspired anthem” ( RAP-UP , 2023). The duo has teamed up several times in the past on songs like “West Coast Weekend” and “Run” with 21 Savage and BIA.

This tour will be Saweetie’s first headliner, giving the “Icy Grl” rapper an opportunity to promote her music. The 2017 single “Icy Grl” brought Saweetie mainstream attention, with critics from publications like XXL and the LA Times praising her freestyle skills. She dropped the EP, Icy , in 2019 with the single, “My Type” becoming a Billboard Mainstream Top 40 hit. Her debut album, Pretty Bitch Music , is coming soon and was preceded by the 2020 singles “Tap In” and “Back to the Streets.” Get your Saweetie tickets now and see this rapper who made the 2021 Forbes ’ 30 Under 30 list.

Playboi Carti

The Atlanta-born rapper first made his mark on the scene with the debut of his self-titled mixtape in 2017. His single “Magnolia” made the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart and became a multi-platinum hit. Carti’s next album, Whole Lotta Red , dropped in 2020 and immediately hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The time between these two albums saw Playboi Carti as a featured artist on a number of songs by industry stars like A$AP Rocky, Lil Uzi Vert , A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Tyler the Creator and others.

Playboi Carti founded his record label, Opium, in 2019, and has taken the initiative to promote new talent within the rap and hip-hop scene. These newcomers include Ken Carson, Homixide Gang and Destroy Lonely, who will all be joining Carti on his tour. Enjoy hits like “Wokeuplikethis,” “Sky” and “@ Meh” live on the Antagonist tour when you get your Playboi Carti tickets today.

Victoria Monet

Her compositional work with artists like Lupe Fiasco, Nas and Ariana Grande, as well as solo creative projects, has brought to light Victoria Monet’s success. Her first EP Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 2 was released in 2014 and featured tracks like “90’s Babies” and “See the Light.” As her popularity grew, Monet joined artists like Fifth Harmony on tour and composed additional albums, like Life After Love Pt. 2 (2018) and Jaguar (2020). The release of 2020 singles, “Moment” and “Dive,” earned her recognition as Apple Music’s Up Next artist in February. Watch this rising singer perform live with Victoria Monet tickets .

Join Victoria Monet on The Jaguar Tour following the August release of her debut studio album, Jaguar II . The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter will embark on her first headliner tour in late September. Trippie Redd

Since then, songs like “Taking a Walk,” “Topanga” and “Dark Knight Dummo” have all made it onto the Billboard Hot 100. Trippie Redd is an artist who has been commended for his inclusion of heavy metal and rock & roll elements into his music. He has leveled from a Soundcloud rapper to a powerhouse performer with more than 19 million Spotify streams each month. Experience one of hip-hop’s new versatile creators live with Trippie Redd tickets .

Forever bold and unapologetic with her music, the “Attention” singer is going on a nationwide tour, joined by Doechii and Ice Spice. Doja Cat became a viral internet sensation in 2018 when she released “Mooo!” The cow-print-styled music video that accompanied the single gained millions of views and gave the L.A. rapper a boost when she released her album, Hot Pink (2019). Her next album, Planet Her (2021) was packed with a number of popular hits like “Best Friend,” “Kiss Me More” and “Streets.” The latter single inspired the viral “silhouette” challenge on TikTok, where users mimicked Doja’s appearance in the “Streets” (Silhouette Remix) music video. Enjoy a visually bold concert experience live on The Scarlet Tour , which marks the Grammy-award-winning rapper’s first North American arena venture.

Lil Tjay’s music is a true form of self-expression and calls back to one of hip-hop’s purposes in creating a space to freely speak on the violence and hardships experienced in life, particularly by Black men. After recovering from a traumatic shooting last June, Lil Tjay is back and setting off on his Beat The Odds tour. The rapper will be promoting his newest album, 222 , while touring North America, New Zealand and Australia. The album highlights his survival and struggles with vulnerability and grief after the shooting. “Project Walls” and “June 22nd” are popular tracks from the album that fans can expect to hear on tour along with hits like “Calling My Phone,” “Run it Up” and “F.N.” Don’t miss out and get your Lil Tjay tickets today.

Latin Stars Bringing a New Sound to Hip-Hop

When hip-hop culture began spreading throughout New York, it naturally influenced the music of neighboring communities, particularly those with Latin and Caribbean roots. This created a path for famous New York rappers like Fat Joe and Angie Martinez, who have Puerto Rican origins. Reggaeton, a music style popularized in Puerto Rico, was influenced by Jamaican music, just like hip-hop. This intersection helped people like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar become acclaimed figures in the global music scene. Check out the following Latin singers and rappers that are bringing a new sound to hip-hop.

PHILADELPHIA, March 9, 2023 –  2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, with celebrations planned both nationally and globally — including many here in Philadelphia.

Read on to see how Philly helped define what hip-hop is today, as well as info on 50th-anniversary events and concerts from local and national hip-hop acts, with more to be announced throughout the year.

Hip-Hop History:

On August 11, 1973, in the rec room of an apartment building in the Bronx, a new musical form entered the world .

The night in question was a back-to-school party featuring a soundtrack of popular artists like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and The Meters. The host of the bash, 18-year-old Clive Campbell, took to the DJ booth and queued up heavily percussive, dance-friendly portions of songs, known as breaks, on two turntables. With a copy of the same record on each turntable, Campbell — better known as DJ Kool Herc — was able to loop these high-energy breaks through a technique called the merry-go-round. The merry-go-round was the basis for the genre we now know as hip-hop.

Taking hold at block parties and among Black, Latino and Caribbean American communities, hip-hop spread from the underground to the mainstream, thanks to one of the first hip-hop records, Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, released in 1979.

Philly’s Hip-Hop History:

By the late 1970s, hip-hop was thriving in Philadelphia. In 1979, Philly rapper Lady B (one of the first female hip-hop artists) released To The Beat Y’all, putting the city on the hip-hop map. A few years later, in 1985, Philly rapper Schoolly D helped define gangsta rap with his single P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?).

Through the late 1980s and 1990s, Philly’s hip-hop scene flourished with big-name acts bringing attention to the city. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (known these days as Will Smith) won the first-ever Grammy for best rap performance for their song Parents Just Don’t Understand, in 1989. Blending jazz and live instrumentation with rapping, The Roots have been musical mainstays in Philadelphia since founders Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter first performed together during a talent show while they were students at Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in 1989.

In the late ’90s, when hip-hop experienced a commercial breakthrough, Philly-born artists like Eve and Beanie Sigel gained mainstream attention with releases on major record labels. Meanwhile, musicians like Adam Blackstone found notoriety performing with the likes of Jay-Z.

Today, Philly is home to some of hip-hop’s most imaginative and groundbreaking acts. In addition to his anthemic music, Meek Mill continues to push for criminal justice reform in Philadelphia. Tierra Whack, dubbed the “future of hip hop,” has gripped the world with her boundary-pushing style, experimenting with time and genre. Hip-hop has always served as a vehicle for identity, a means for artists and listeners alike to share their political beliefs, fashion choices, and social and economic realities and to speak truth to power. An amalgamation of various art forms — including poetry, breakdancing, MCing, graffiti and storytelling — hip-hop is a multi-discipline art form.

50th-Anniversary Events:

Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival Sunday, June 18, 2023 Commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, the all-day Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival features floats, performances and food. Spectators at this year’s parade should keep an eye out for a float dedicated to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. (Stay tuned for more details.) Where: Various locations including Malcolm X Park, 5100 Pine Street

Love + Grit, Visit Philadelphia’s Podcast – Season 4 Visit Philadelphia’s podcast about the city’s best-kept secrets and biggest exports recently returned for its fourth season. This go-around, hosts Laiya St. Clair, Rachel Ferguson and Justin Pizzi pay homage to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop through interviews with musical changemakers like DJ Jazzy Jeff and Adam Blackstone .

History of Hip-Hop Music

Hip-hop is one of the most popular musical genres of the modern era. Although commonly referred to as rap music, hip-hop incorporates more than just rapping, which is just a part of it – hip-hop denotes the whole subculture behind the musical movement.

Bronx, New York City is the birthplace of hip-hop, which was mainly popularized by African Americans, Latino Americans, and Caribbean Americans living in the inter-city in the 1970s.

Hip-hop didn’t become mainstream until 1979. The musical genre started to emerge from underground block parties in ghetto neighborhoods. The first mainstream and commercial style of hip-hop is called old-school hip-hop, which was popular between 1979 to 1983. The second generation of hip-hop was called new school hip-hop, after which the genre entered the Golden age of hip-hop between 1985 to 1995.

The subgenres of hip-hop include drill, trap, alternative hip-hop, gangsta rap, and mumble rap. In 2017, hip-hop surpassed rock to be the most popular genre in the USA.

Biggest Rap Concerts

Looking for some fun rap concerts? You can find them at the Rolling Loud Festival. This 3-day festival is the largest in the world and takes place in multiple cities.

Founded by none other than the great Jay-Z, Made in America is a must-see rap festival that takes place annually in Philadelphia, PA. The shows here have a reputation for featuring rising stars in the genre.

If you happen to be in Texas or close by, you should definitely check out JMBLYA. This festival takes place in multiple cities in the Lone Star state, including Austin, the Live Music capital of the world.

What Seats are the Best at a Concert

Rapper concerts tend to be highly exciting and energetic. You’ll be standing and dancing to the rhythmic beats of the music. You also would want to be as close as possible to the stage. However, do not stand too close as the sound quality is not the best at that point.

Ice Cube performs at the Hydro in Glasgow.

Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, D12 review – old school hip-hop heroes are still masters of the mic

Hydro, Glasgow The focus of the 80s and 90s stars’ High Rollers tour is on storytelling rather than flashy staging, but it is a high-intensity show of real fire and focus

‘C an he still get on the mic and do what you like?” Ice Cube asks as he kicks off the UK leg of his High Rollers tour in Glasgow. It’s a question that hangs in the air – semi-rhetorical and positioned as a challenge by the veteran rapper, whose CV has exploded in all directions since his early gangsta rap days.

Ice Cube is joined on this tour by 90s stoner-rap legends Cypress Hill , with MCs B-Real and Sen Dog presenting a slick yet frenzied set of their best work. Flanked by clouds of customary weed smoke, they pack in a wealth of activity – from DJ Lord’s mixing of KRS-One’s Sound of da Police with Metallica’s Enter Sandman to the lone piper who appears on stage and fills the Hydro with a satisfying rendition of Flower of Scotland. Tracks such as Tequila Sunrise and (Rock) Superstar are given extra weight thanks to the drumming of ex-Beastie Boys percussionist Eric Bobo, while B-Real and Sen Dog’s rhythmic prowess shines on I Wanna Get High, Latin Lingo and the suitably trippy finale of Insane in the Brain.

The gig would have been a west coast trifecta had opener the Game made his way to Glasgow as planned. Instead he was replaced by a scaled down version of Detroit collective D12, who are just about to begin a 20th-anniversary tour. Swifty McVay and Kuniva serve as quintessential hype men for an audience not necessarily expecting their presence, tearing through hits such as Rap Game, My Band and Purple Pills to warm the crowd. There’s even a cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself, accompanied by guitarist Jake Bass, the son of the track’s original co-producer and riff composer.

Sen Dog and B-Real of Cypress Hill at the Hydro.

Ice Cube then makes good on his promise to “keep it gangsta” with the fast and furious introduction of Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It, Natural Born Killaz and Hello. Against a backdrop of photos and clips from his music and film careers, the focus is on lyricism rather than gimmickry or flashy staging. He is joined by his Westside Connection bandmate WC, who adds emphasis to career-spanning favourites such as Check Yo Self, You Know How We Do It and Why We Thugs, as well as No Vaseline – proclaimed the “best diss track ever made in the history of hip-hop” – and NWA’s Straight Outta Compton.

Ice Cube’s flow has always been characterised by defiance, whether in response to racial tensions, the brutality of street life or trauma in the Black community. But what sets him apart is his skill at weaving in the mundane and peppering even his most anthemic and provocative stanzas with humour and levity. On stage tonight there is real fire in his storytelling and streams of consciousness, and his focus never dips even for a minute.

Ice Cube’s credentials over the past two decades may have included actor, film producer, director, basketball league co-founder and more. But tonight he is back to being one of the west coast’s finest rap exports, and evidently still doing what he likes on the mic.

Old School vs. New School: Why Older Rappers Are Selling Out Tours While Younger Rappers Struggle

Mail

In the ever-evolving world of hip-hop, the dynamics of success have taken an intriguing twist in recent years. It’s a tale of two generations: the seasoned veterans who pioneered the genre and the fresh-faced newcomers eager to make their mark. Surprisingly, the older rappers dominate the stage, sell tours, and command the attention of hip-hop enthusiasts worldwide, while many of their younger counterparts struggle to find their footing.

There’s no denying that hip-hop has always celebrated its pioneers. The likes of Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem have been instrumental in shaping the genre, and their legacies continue to thrive. Old and new fans are flocking to arenas and stadiums to catch a glimpse of these living legends in action. The question is, what is it about these seasoned performers that keep them in such high demand?

old school hip hop tour 2023

  • A Time-Tested Catalog : One of the key factors contributing to the success of older rappers is their extensive and diverse discographies. Years of experience have allowed them to create an arsenal of timeless classics, ensuring that their concerts are packed with hits that resonate with multiple generations of fans.
  • Seasoned Stage Presence : Seasoned performers like Jay-Z and Nas have honed their stagecraft over decades. Their performances are a masterclass in crowd engagement, showmanship, and lyrical prowess. This level of expertise can only come from years of live experience.
  • Established Fan Base : Older rappers have built a loyal and dedicated fan base over the years. These fans continue to support their favorite artists, attending concerts and purchasing merchandise, helping to sustain their careers well into their 40s and 50s.
  • Nostalgia Factor : Hip-hop fans often cherish the nostalgia of the genre’s golden era. Seeing the icons of yesteryear perform live evokes a sense of nostalgia that many find irresistible, making them eager to relive their youth through these concerts.

On the flip side, younger rappers face several challenges when it comes to selling out tours:

  • Oversaturation : The hip-hop landscape is flooded with new talent, making it harder for emerging artists to stand out. The sheer volume of newcomers often dilutes the attention and fan base that could propel them to tour success.
  • Lack of Catalog Depth : Many younger rappers have fewer discographies than their older counterparts. This can make it challenging to fill a concert with enough hit songs to satisfy an audience, leading to shorter and less compelling performances.
  • Inexperience : While young rappers may have raw talent, they often lack the stage presence and live performance skills that come with years of practice. Captivating an audience requires more than just a good flow; it demands charisma and an understanding of how to work a crowd.
  • Evolving Fan Base : The fan base of younger rappers is generally younger and more fickle. Trends change rapidly in the world of hip-hop, and maintaining a dedicated following can be challenging when your audience is constantly seeking the next big thing.

In conclusion, the phenomenon of older rappers outselling their younger counterparts on tours can be attributed to a combination of factors, including their extensive catalog of hits, stage experience, established fan base, and the nostalgia they evoke. While younger rappers face obstacles in a crowded and ever-changing industry, they also have the opportunity to learn from the success of their predecessors and continue pushing the genre’s boundaries. Ultimately, it’s a dynamic landscape where both old and new can coexist, each bringing their unique strengths to the forefront of hip-hop culture.

Legendary R&B singer Mary J. Blige shares plans to retire in ‘5 or 6 years’

  • Published: Apr. 30, 2024, 10:35 a.m.

2024 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees

Getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a incredible career high for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. However, the 53-year-old could be ending her career on a high note.

Blige will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame alongside Foreigner , Jimmy Buffett , Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang and more on Oct. 19. While Blige is about to receive one of the biggest honors in the music industry, the songstress is gearing up for retirement in the near future.

In an exclusive interview with Extra , the 9-time Grammy winner opened up about her future plans, saying, “Right now, I’m definitely gonna do some more acting and I’m definitely gonna retire in, like, five or six years.”

The R&B icon, who has also had a fruitful acting career, later clarified that she was just looking to step away from making music.

“Right now, I’m still doing what I’m doing but not as often as I was doing it because I don’t have to now,” Blige told Extra.

Blige has been credited with influencing the musical marriage of hip hop and R&B and praised for her emotionally charged lyrics and stage presence.

The multi-platinum singer rose to fame in 1992 with the release of her debut album, “What’s the 411?,” which is credited for introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into the mainstream music scene.

Blige saw continued success with her follow-up effort, “My Life,” released in 1994, as well as several platinum and gold albums throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Blige has released 14 studio albums over the course of her career, four of which topped the Billboard 200.

Her biggest hits include “Real Love”, “You Remind Me”, “I’m Goin’ Down”, “Not Gon’ Cry”, “Be Without You”, “Just Fine” and the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “Family Affair.”

Rolling Stone also ranked her as the 25th greatest singer of all-time in 2013.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
