Celebrating their fiftieth anniversary with an extensive international tour, Squeeze are one of rock's vital institutions, a band who carved out a distinctive place in the pop firmament with their vibrantly melodic, perceptive songs. Those songs were written by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the composers who remained at the heart of Squeeze since its inception in 1973. Such early New Wave hits as "Up the Junction," "Cool for Cats," "Another Nail in My Heart" and "Tempted" led critics to label Difford and Tilbrook the "next Lennon and McCartney," an assessment that wasn't proven to be hyperbole. The ensuing decades found Squeeze building a formidable body of work, a songbook that continues to expand with the release of the vigorous comeback albums Cradle to the Grave and The Knowledge, a pair of records Squeeze delivered in the late 2010s after a nearly twenty-year hiatus from the studio.

Over the years, Squeeze saw a few hiatuses and breaks, not to mention players cycling through the lineup. Throughout it all, Difford and Tilbrook were the constants. The pair met when Tilbrook answered a "musicians wanted" advertisement Difford placed in a local south London shop. Keyboardist Jools Holland joined shortly afterward, then the band adopted the name Squeeze, cheekily taking the moniker from the disparaged final Velvet Underground album that featured none of the group's original members. Improbably, founding Velvet Underground member John Cale wound up playing a crucial role in Squeeze's early career. In 1977, after Gilson Lavis came aboard as their drummer and Harri Kakouli became the group's bassist, Cale produced Packet of Three, Squeeze's debut EP, and a good portion of their eponymous 1978 debut. The band produced two cuts on Squeeze, including their breakthrough hit, "Take Me, I'm Yours."

When Boy George first appeared on Top of the Pops with Culture Club in 1982, he instantly had people talking. The New Romantic pop sensations went on to achieve seven UK Top 10 singles, nine Top 10 singles in the USA, and nine Top 20 singles in Australia - including ‘Karma Chameleon’ and ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me - and sell over 100 million singles and 50 million albums worldwide. In 1984, the band picked up the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and the awards for Best British Group and Best British Single at the BRIT Awards.

Culture Club became the first group since The Beatles to have three Top 10 hits in America from a debut album, and the first group in music history to have an album certified diamond in Canada.

After Culture Club’s split in 1986, Boy George released his debut solo single ‘Everything I Own’, which reached #1 in the UK and reached the Top 10 in an additional eight countries. In a solo career spanning three decades, Boy George has released nine studio albums, as well as 1993’s ‘At Worst… The Best of Boy George and Culture Club’ compilation album.

Aside from performing music, Boy George also wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music to Taboo, a stage musical based on the New Romantic scene of the early 1980s, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical Score.

For many concert, comedy, and special events at DPAC, we offer added views of the stage with two big screens (size: 16’ x 9’) hung to the sides of the stage or above the stage. These big screens can add to the visual experience of our concert, comedy, and special events and give guests seated farther from the stage what we like to call “a tenth row view”. Approval to use these screens always rests with the visiting show and about half of all concert and comedy events do use these screens.

Squeeze have confirmed that they will once again support The Trussell Trust on their upcoming UK tour. The Trussell Trust provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, while also campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the future. Squeeze aim to help to raise food, funds and awareness of the 1,200 food bank centres across the UK.  We are asking all people who come to the concerts to bring along food donations to the shows, where there will be collection points across the venue each night.  Here is a link to information on the items that are requested:  https://www.trusselltrust.org/get-involved/ways-to-give/donate-food/ .  There will also be donation buckets for any spare cash that you are able to donate.

Squeeze Sets Summer 2024 Dates For U.S. Return

Squeeze 's Summer 2024 North American Tour will kick off in August in Oregon, marking their first stateside dates since concluding last year's run with the Psychedelic Furs.

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 3, 2024, at 10 a.m. local time. Boy George of Culture Club will switch out as headliners on select stops. A complete list of announced venues and cities is below.

Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford continue to lead Squeeze, whose run of U.K. Top 5 hits include "Cool for Cats," "Up the Junction" and "Labelled with Love." Their best U.S. finish was "Tempted" which reached No. 8 in 1981 on Billboard's mainstream rock chart. They also reached the Top 40 on that chart with "Black Coffee in Bed," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Hourglass," among others.

Squeeze disbanded in 1999 before Difford and Tilbrook reunited in 2007 then added current keyboardist Stephen Large and drummer Simon Hanson. Percussionist and backing vocalist Steve Smith joined in 2017, followed by pedal and lap steel guitarist Melvin Duffy in 2019, and former Roots bassist Owen Biddle in 2020.

Culture Club earned a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1984, while hitting with "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," "Karma Chameleon" and "Church of the Poison Mind," among others. The band was broken up from 1986-1998 then again from 2002-2011, and continues now as a trio. Boy George has also released nine studio albums as a solo artist.

To celebrate their momentous 50th anniversary, British music legends Squeeze have today announced a massive UK tour for 2024. With a half-century distinguished by some of the smartest and sweetest guitar-pop made during the rock & roll era, Squeeze will be performing an impressive list of hits and rare gems from their extensive back catalogue. They will be joined by special guest Badly Drawn Boy. Squeeze are one of rock's vital institutions, a band who carved out a distinctive place in the pop firmament with their vibrantly melodic, perceptive songs. Those songs were written by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the composers who have remained at the heart of Squeeze since its inception. 70s and 80s Hits such as ‘Up the Junction’, ‘Cool for Cats’, ‘Another Nail in My Heart’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘Tempted’ led critics to label Difford and Tilbrook the "next Lennon and McCartney", an assessment that wasn't proven to be hyperbole.

Joining Squeeze on their 50th anniversary festivities is one of the UK’s most treasured songwriters Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy, who also recently celebrated a musical milestone, 25 years of releasing music. From his still-towering, Mercury Prize winning debut The Hour Of Bewilderbeast in 2000 to the enthralling soundtrack to Nick Hornby adaptation About A Boy (from 2002); Badly Drawn Boy’s beautiful and eclectic discography spans over nine albums including Have You Fed The Fish? (also 2002) Born In The U.K. (2006) and his most recent album Banana Skin Shoes in 2020. His set will feature a career-spanning set of hits and fan favourites.

After many years of fundraising and awareness activities with Squeeze and as a solo artist, Glenn Tilbrook, recently accepted an invitation to become an Ambassador for the anti-poverty charity, the Trussell Trust. Squeeze have confirmed that they will once again be supporting the charity, which provides emergency food and support to people who cannot afford the essentials, while campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the UK. 

Right now, millions of people across the country are experiencing hunger and have no option but to turn to a food bank for support. Food banks in the Trussell Trust network gave out a record 1.5 million emergency food parcels between April and September 2023. This will be the busiest winter ever at food banks, who are already stretched to breaking point and urgently need food donations to continue to be there for people who need them right now. 

We are inviting attendees on the tour to bring along food donations to the shows, where there will be collection points across the venue each night. There will also be collection buckets for any cash donations.  All donations will be distributed to people in crisis across the 1,300 food bank centres in the Trussell Trust network.
