The LA Marketing Agency Behind Skateboarding’s Coolest Events

nike sb skate safari barge

Skateboarding Magazine stays up on what’s happening in the Skateboarding Industry and we’ve had our eyes on an Event Marketing Agency based in Los Angeles that’s been building some of the coolest Skateboarding Activations in the Industry for the Top players in the Skateboarding World.

If you remember Go Skateboarding Day from 2013 in New York City, BeCore produced the Nike SB Skate Safari barge .

BeCore built a football field-sized skateboard park on a barge that was towed around to different locations in New York and Brooklyn. Designed by legendary skate architect Tim Payne, the park referenced many famous skate spots in New York that are no longer skateable: Brooklyn Banks, Pyramid Ledges, and others.

BeCore hosted pro demos with the Nike SB team and invited skaters from all over New York to come enjoy the park. We hosted over 3,000 skaters and spectators over the weekend. The barge was a focal point for social media communication as well as retail outreach, with skate shops all over the New York area involved in promoting the event. Photos from the event were posted live to a huge digital billboard at the corner of 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. Importantly, the park attracted kids from long distances who simply wanted a free place to skate.

BeCore also built a sweet mobile registration app that allowed skateboarders to sign up for a skate session time, so people couldn’t hog the park to themselves. There was some really sweet organizing to the entire thing.

Typically Skateboarders talk a lot about skate parks and spots but never give creds to some of the minds behind these cool skateboarding marketing activations for brands like Nike and Street League.

BeCore also is the marketing agency that produced Go Skate Day for Nike SB in 2015 check out a preview in the clip below.

BeCore  was the marketing agency that produced this super sweet event for Nike SB in Newark:

Experiential Marketing and Event Marketing for Skateboarding

Photography by Ben Draper Photography

BeCore is a marketing agency headquartered in Downtown Los Angeles, but they have Satellite locations in New York City , Chicago, Austin and Detroit. They build some of the coolest marketing activations we’ve seen. It’s easy for suits to mess up Skateboarding when you’re talking about marketing, but BeCore keeps it real. Their name says it all. BeCore. An ode to Authenticity in a world of impersonation.

Learn more about becore at http://www.becore.com or on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/becorela

BeCore, we salute you! Keep on making kick ass shit.

Nike Go Skateboarding Day

Nike SB has some huge stuff in the works for this year’s “Go Skateboarding Day”. Upping the ante after building their own skatepark back in 2012, this year they re-created a ton of classic NYC skate spots. Oh, and they did it on a 250ft barge that’s floating in the waters around Manhattan. On top of that there are contest planned spanning the city’s various boroughs, allowing young skaters across the Big Apple to showcase what they’ve got. Continue reading for a glimpse at the incredible Nike SB Skate Safari Barge, as well as a full listing of the various stuff going on at other locations like Sao Paulo and Los Angeles, and make sure you get out there and skate this weekend.

Nike Skateboarding kicks off another epic Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) June 21. To celebrate and encourage more riders to Skate Every Damn Day, Nike SB is hosting events around the world to promote the growth of skateboarding.

Nike SB invited riders of all ages to attend activations in New York, London, Washington D.C., Mexico City, Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, Melbourne, Sao Paulo, Chicago and Los Angeles. To find out how to be a part of the action check Nike SB’s Skate Every Damn Day website for detailed information. New York City

New York City takes Go Skateboarding Day to a new level offering skaters the unique opportunity to experience the Nike SB Skate Safari Barge—a custom skate park built on a 250ft barge that will travel between two special locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. GSD begins at Flushing Meadows Maloof Park and features the Red Bull Best Trick Contest. Nike SB will then take over the Lower East Side’s Coleman Oval Park with Nike SB pros and the 5Boro NYC and CCS x Nike SB Best Trick Contests.

The day closes with a must-see special demo by Nike SB athlete Paul Rodriguez, alongside other members of the Nike SB pro team on the Nike SB Skate Safari Barge, taking place at 8pm on Friday, June 21st. Sao Paulo

In Sao Paulo, Brasil, Nike SB pros Cezar Gordo and Rodrigo Gerdal will help celebrate Go Skateboarding Day at the iconic Praça Charles Miller, featuring many different obstacles, DJs and more. Los Angeles

In L.A., Nike SB will host a skate safari through the city. In the week leading up to Go Skateboarding Day, riders have skated three iconic spots: the L.A. Courthouse, the Wilshire Rails and the Downtown L.A. Car Wash next to the Staples Center. Exclusive prizes will be given to those who shared photos of their skate safari to each spot. The event on GSD will be held at Hollenbeck Skate Plaza and Nike’s Sixth & Mill skatepark with the Nike SB team.

To contribute to the Go Skateboarding Day live feed, post pictures or videos to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Vine tagged with #SKATEEVERYDAMNDAY and #GOSKATEBOARDINGDAY. Content will be featured on Skate Every Damn Day.

Nike SB Hosts #SkateEveryDamnDay Event in NYC to Kick Off Go Skateboarding Day

Oh, and they have a 250 foot barge converted into a floating skate park.

Image via Complex Original

Not Available Lead

Last night in New York City, Nike SB kicked off Go Skateboarding Day a bit early by hosting an event on the upper west side. Nike Skateboarding pros like Stefan Janoski were on hand to show-off their skills and mingle with attendees. Nike's Skate Every Damn Day moniker could be seen across the t-shirts of skaters and on-lookers. A preview of the new Nike SB P-Rod 7 was just one of the many surprises at this invite-only event. Luckily we had @DeadstockNYC on hand to capture some pictures.

Check out the rest of Nike SB's planned events for Go Skateboarding Day in the press release below:

NEW YORK CITY

Go Skateboarding Day in New York begins at Flushing Meadows Maloof Park and features the Red Bull Best Trick Contest. Nike SB will then take over the Lower East Side’s Coleman Oval Park with Nike SB pros and the 5Boro NYC and CCS x Nike SB Best Trick Contests. The grand finale kicks off as the Nike SB Skate Safari Barge, a 250ft barge converted into a floating skate park, makes trips back and forth from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

The Nike SB Skate Safari Barge will host special programming throughout the weekend, including the must-see special demo by Nike SB athlete Paul Rodriguez alongside other members of the Nike SB pro team, taking place at 8pm on Friday, June 21st.

The event on GSD will be held at Hollenbeck Skate Plaza and Nike's Sixth & Mill skatepark with the Nike SB team.

Craziest Skateparks in the World!

According to Skateboard.com.au’s World Skatepark Map there are an estimated 4820 skateparks around our blue little planet. Each skatepark’s build is unique in its own way with locations, materials, and obstacles leaving no two alike. Of course, with nearly 5000 of these wonderfully adventurous playgrounds, there were bound to be a few odd experiments in the mix.

Wondering what are the craziest skateparks in the world? Let’s find out!

House of Vans in London

nike sb skate safari barge

Keeping with its “Off The Walls” spirit, House of Vans in London provides a cultural hub for skateboarding, music, film, and basically all things art-related. Located below the Waterloo subway station, the site boasts an impressive 2,500 sqm surface across 5 different tunnels. While the venue has welcomed a slew of international acts such as Chvrches, Foo Fighters, and Metallica, the skatepark is spread over 3 tunnels to cater to skaters of all levels!

Koo Jeong’s Glow-in-the-Dark Skatepark

nike sb skate safari barge

In 2008, South Korean artist Koo Jeong-A set out to create a dreamy landscape in the middle of the wilderness. Finding her ideal spot on an island in the artificial lake of Vassivière, France, the artist designed and created a phosphorescent skatepark allowing skaters to hit the concrete at night. Koo Jeong-A’s successful concept would go on to produce phosphorescent twin in Liverpool, circa 2015.

Nike’s Skate Safari Barge

nike sb skate safari barge

Go Skateboarding Day is kind of like the Independence Day of skaters. With festivities all over, the world turns into one enormous skatepark for skaters to discover and enjoy. Even water becomes an area of conquest. In 2015, Nike created its Skate Safari Barge to celebrate the day in New York City. Over 75 meters long, the floating park drifted back and forth between Brooklyn and Manhattan as it accommodated skaters for the event.

The Nike SB Shelter from Berlin

nike sb skate safari barge

Initially called the Skatehalle Berlin, Nike renovated the indoor location and converted it into a public street park for every single kind of skater that possibly exists. Blocks, stairs, rails, and bowls, it’s got it all and and should definitely be in your destinations if you’re in Berlin!

Nike Skate Safari Barge Project

  • Jun 27, 2013

We spent this years Go Skateboarding Day in New York and it was so rad! Nike hosted an all day event through the city but that wasn’t the only conceptually diverse aspect of the days plannings… Nike contacted us with an idea, to somehow contribute some of the city’s most legendary spots into the design. Originally the project was supposed to take about twelve days, but considering the overcast and having to completely put a stop to working on some days, it took a little under three weeks. However, what made this project so incomparable was the fact that it was built on a barge and was shipped from New Jersey to the west side of New York. In Nike’s words the project was a, “Shipment of Skateboarding History” and we’re so stoked Team Pain was able be apart of what is said to be one of the greatest go skateboarding days in history! Scroll down and check out a video and some photo’s of the barge.

Alexis Sablone x Nike SB Dunk Low Releases in 2024

Published on

nike sb skate safari barge

Alexis Sablone, an accomplished professional skateboarder and architect, rose to prominence in the early 2000s with her innovative style and groundbreaking tricks. Known for her smooth transitions and technical prowess, Sablone has become an icon in both skateboarding and design communities. In 2024, she is set to launch her own Nike SB Dunk Low and Converse AS-1 Pro collaboration, showcasing her unique blend of creativity and athleticism to a wider audience.

The Nike SB Dunk Low designed by Alexis Sablone showcases a white premium tumbled leather build with perforations on the toe box for ventilation. Its standout feature lies in the reptile-textured overlays, blending green and fuchsia pink hues, extending onto the olive Swooshes, granting the shoe a fashionable edge. Over time, the exterior layer of paint may wear away, unveiling the vibrant fuchsia layer underneath, while a sail midsole and green rubber outsole round off the design, accompanied by an additional set of laces stored in special packaging.

Alexis Sablone Nike SB Dunk Low Release Date

Set for release in Fall 2024, the Alexis Sablone x Nike SB Dunk Low will be available at select skate shops in-store, online, and Nike.com . The shoes will be available in family sizing, with adult pairs priced at $135, while PS (preschool) and TD (toddler) pairs will be available at $90 and $75, respectively.

In conclusion, Alexis Sablone’s collaboration with Nike represents a fusion of her creative vision and sporting prowess. With innovative design elements and functional features, the Nike SB Dunk Low embodies Sablone’s impact on both skateboarding and fashion.

13 Things To Do In Saint Petersburg | Russia’s Most Beautiful City

By Author Christian L.

Posted on Published: January 17, 2021  - Last updated: September 11, 2021

Categories Europe , Destinations , Russia

Once known as Leningrad and before that Petrograd, Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the country’s second-largest city. Set next to the Neva River, close to the Baltic Sea, this city is home to over 5 million people.

It’s the world’s northernmost city, founded by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter the apostle. Once home to the Tsars of Russia, it is today known as the country’s cultural capital.

With iconic sights such as Hermitage Museum, Nevsky Prospect, Peterhof Palace, and so much more, it has a fascinating heritage ripe for exploration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the 13 best things to do in St. Petersburg.

Visit Saint Petersburg, Europe´s most beautiful city

Top Things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg, Europe, has grown into one of the top tourist destinations on the continent. Although it might get very cold in winter, there are still plenty of things to do – and the summers are absolutely perfect! Saint Petersburg is one of the prettiest cities in all of Europe .

Keep reading for some of my favorite choices.

1. Visit The World Famous Hermitage Museum

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

One of the city’s most popular attractions (with over 3 million items in its esteemed collection), State Hermitage Museum showcases everything from fine art to ancient artifacts.

Even if you don’t plan on entering inside, the exterior is an architectural gem in itself. The columns are all in white with green/gold facades that can be viewed from the river or Palace Square.

If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, your trip would not be complete without stopping past this world-famous landmark. It’s also a great activity to do no matter what time of year you are visiting – and a perfect way to escape those cold Russian winter days.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

There are six buildings in the museum complex in total. Five of which – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre – can be accessed by the public.

Within, you’ll be treated to Egyptian collections, artifacts dating from ancient Mesopotamia, and classical Greek jewelry, pottery, and sculptures. This is any historical culture lover’s dream.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

Keep exploring, and you will find collections of prehistoric relics from the Palaeolithic era to the Iron Ages, European fine arts, Impressionist works, Catherine the Great’s personal collections, and so much more.

In fact, you’ll need an entire day or possibly longer to explore this incredible museum complex. If you only have limited time in St. Petersburg, be sure to add this museum to your itinerary! There are also guided tours available if you want a more educational experience.

Did you know? The Hermitage Museum is the world’s second-largest art museum.

2. Take in a Performance at Mariinsky Theatre

The Neoclassical Mariinsky Theatre is home to Russia’s revered opera and ballet companies.

The theatre – named after the wife of Tsar Alexandra II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna – has been here since 1860 when it was known as the Kirov Theatre.

This magnificent building, since it opened, has hosted stage performances and premieres from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and famous ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Today, in addition to hosting live performances, the theatre has its own record label, which focuses on releasing music by Russian composers Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov.

If you enjoy the arts and are going to be in St. Petersburg for several days, book tickets to see a world-class performance – you won’t be disappointed.

3. See Jewelled Eggs at the Faberge Museum

The House of Faberge was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by Gustav Faberge. Originally a jeweler, he became famous for designing jewel-encrusted eggs for the Tsars of Russia and is arguably the most famous goldsmith of the modern era.

Today, you can view these iconic collection pieces in the Faberge Museum. It showcases 4,000 items in total, including Faberge Easter eggs, jewelry, silverware, home decor, and fantasy-themed objects.

The incredible jeweled eggs are famous all over the world, and there are several museums dedicated to them. But if you want to learn about Gustav Faberge, his family, and how it all began, this is the museum to visit. You can purchase a ticket in person or online.

4. Spend an Hour Canal Cruising

St. Petersburg is built on 42 islands, and once upon a time (before bridges were constructed), cruising was the only way to navigate the city.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

On a Golden Ring boat tour, you’ll see some of St. Petersburg’s iconic sights along the Kryukov Canal, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Mariinsky theatre.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in central Saint Petersburg.

You’ll dip beneath the famous colored bridges on Neva River whilst enjoying views of Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasilyevsky Island, and the Summer Garden. This is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to take in all the beauty that St. Petersburg has to offer.

This tour also only takes around an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit your favorite spots throughout the day!

5. Discover Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Saint Petersburg,Russia,Europe,Church

One of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

This former Russian Orthodox Church was completed in 1907 and is built in Baroque, Neoclassical, and Russian Revival design. It is one of the city’s main attractions, with ornate domes, intricate frescoes, and 7,500 square meters of mosaics inside.

If you don’t wish to enter, you can gain incredible views from Griboedov Canal. But if you do venture inside, you’ll be rewarded with interior frescoes and mosaic works depicting biblical scenes and figures created by celebrated Russian artists of the time.

The Church of the Saviour of Blood is built on the spot where Emperor Alexander 2 was assassinated in 1881 – hence the name. So, not only will you be able to appreciate the fine architectural designs, but also explore an important part of Russian history.

6. Take a Rooftop Walk-in St. Petersburg

If you have viewed the city from canals and rivers, try it from the rooftops! You can take a guided rooftop walk in the city, seeing streets and skylines from an elevated perspective.

One particular tour to highlight is the Official Rooftops Excursion of St. Petersburg. Just a few minutes from Nevsky Prospect, these sites offer vistas of Fontanka River and Trinity Cathedral – and that’s just the first roof.

The second roof boasts views of St. Petersburg’s old center, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

This is a truly incredible way to see the city in all its glory, plus the tour provides you with binoculars so you can see everything in great detail.

7. Admire Nevsky Prospect’s Magnificent Architecture

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,

The main street of St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. Begin at the intersection at Stroganov Palace before venturing to Kazan Cathedral. While you walk, take in the monuments dedicated to Catherine the Great and browse goods at The Passage – Nevsky Avenue’s premier department store.

This store was quite the trailblazer. It opened its doors in the late 1840s and was one of the first buildings in Russia to use gas for lighting. Then, in 1900, an electric station was installed on an underground floor.

Once you’ve finished shopping and enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee, continue to the Russian National Library – the oldest public library in Russia – and Alexandrinsky Theatre (which was built for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg).

8. Visit the Island of Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress saint petersburg

Set on an island connected by bridges, Peter and Paul Fortress is instantly recognizable from its needle spire, which dominates the skyline. The fortress was originally built to defend the maritime city from Swedish invaders.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

However, Peter the Great defeated the opposition before it was even completed! It has since served as a military center and prison for political dissenters and, latterly, as a museum.

Inside the vast complex, you can see Peter and Paul Cathedral, visit the resting place of the Romanovs, and watch military processions or the firing of the noon-day gun.

It’s a great day trip for anyone interested in Russian, maritime or military history. There are also plenty of group walking tours available.

9. Sample Russian Vodka in a Ryumochnye

A visit to Russia wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local drink – vodka, and the best place to do this is in a Ryumochnye. This is a specific style of 19th-century Russian drinking house that not only offers some of Russia’s best vodka but also a short history lesson.

You could call it a bar, but it’s more than that – most mainstream Ryumochnye have a definite Soviet vibe and are places for working men to kick back and enjoy vodka with their buddies.

Beverages come in bottles or shot form, and some places offer self-service and snacks.

If that sounds too hardcore for your taste, there are updated versions of Ryumochnye in the city, like Mayak in St. Petersburg, where you can gain a similar experience.

10. Enjoy local Saint Petersburg Craft Beer

saint petersburg craft beer

Although most people think of vodka when visiting Russia, you can also enjoy some of the best craft beer in Saint Petersburg . Russia’s second-largest city has an exciting, rapidly growing craft beer scene, in part due to its history and geography.

Historically, the Russian empire was influenced by Northern Europe, and the Dutch & English beer-drinking culture eventually made its way here. Today, Saint Petersburg is home to a growing number of modern microbreweries, cool taprooms, and stylish bars.

craft beer saint petersburg

Saint Petersburg is also home to Stepan Razin Brewery, the oldest brewery in Russia (now, of course, owned by Heiniken). It opened in 1795, but today the building is known as the Saint Petersburg Beer Museum, showcasing the history of beer in Russia and the Soviet Union.

Russia’s largest and most popular brewery, Baltika, is also located in Saint Petersburg, and it’s possible to take a tour of their huge brewery.

11. See the Majestic Catherine Palace

A stately palace of blue and gold, Catherine’s Palace is located 26 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. Named after the wife of Peter the Great, this place was originally a two-story modest building commissioned in 1717.

The exterior, which stretches for one kilometer in circumference, is surrounded by woodlands, lawns, gilded balconies, and reliefs. However, the interiors are even more impressive.

With great halls, a white dining room, an amber room, and more. It’s the perfect place to step back into history and discover what life was like as a Russian aristocracy.

12. Explore Peterhof Palace

peterhof saint petersburg

If you’re going to visit Catherine Palace, you should tour Peterhof too. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you can even take a hydrofoil speed boat from right behind the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg center.

Sitting close to the Baltic Sea, Peterhof Palace was constructed by Peter the Great to be Russia’s version of Versailles. The opulent residence surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and tiered staircases leading to the grand entrance evokes mystery and the history of a bygone era.

Inside it is lavishly decorated with dazzling chandeliers, one-of-a-kind artworks and beautiful ceiling frescoes.

Peterhof garden.

On a guided tour, you can learn more about the palace’s history. Discover the Throne Room, Portrait Hall and Peter the Great’s Oak Study. You’ll see dining rooms set for dinner, grand ballrooms where dancing and gatherings would take place, and décor which defies time.

Peterhof saint petersburg russia

The palace offers great insight into his life and legacy, and if you are interested in history, art and interior design, you’ll love it.

13. Spend a Day by the Finnish Border at Vyborg

Just over an hour from central Saint Petersburg by train is the city of Vyborg. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and was first settled back in the 12th century. The city has been occupied by Finnish and German forces and suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. However, it has since been rebuilt.

It’s a charming center to wander around, with narrow cobbled streets, a medieval castle, and Finnish art nouveau structures sprinkled throughout. An easy day trip from St. Petersburg, it can also serve as a stop-off point if you’re crossing into Finland to continue your adventure.

Want to know more about Saint Petersburg?

Where is St. Petersburg | Is St. Petersburg in Europe?

If you want to know “Where is Saint Petersburg?”, you’ve come to the right place. Beautiful St. Petersburg is located in northern Russia. Russia is a massive country, so it is no surprise that many people want to know “Is Saint Petersburg in Europe?”. The answer is yes.

How to Get to Saint Petersburg

The maritime city is well linked to Europe by air, sea, rail and road. Depending on where you’re traveling from and the rest of your itinerary, you can use one of the following ways to arrive at St. Petersburg.

You can fly into Saint Petersburg through Pulkovo International Airport. There are around 1,100 international flights a week and 1,200 domestic flights operating in and out of the local airport.

Although many flights from European cities to Saint Petersburg are direct, you may have to change flights if flying from further afield.

It’s also possible to travel to St. Petersburg by train. The most popular (and most frequent) routes operate from Moscow, Helsinki, and Tallinn. However, there are options to travel from other areas in central Europe, central Asia, and eastern Europe by rail.

There is a central bus station in Saint Petersburg, with services to and from Moscow, Pskov, Novgorod, Vilnius, Riga , Tallinn and Helsinki. Some of these journeys can be long and arduous.

Therefore, thorough research and choosing the right bus company is important.

Baltic Sea Cruises also operate to St. Petersburg as part of a larger itinerary, and St. Peter Line Ferry sails from Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia.

Exploring Saint Petersburg, Russia

Saint Petersburg is the 5th most populous city in Europe and also a leading tourist destination. Although people sometimes forget about Russia, this city is breathtakingly beautiful and provides plenty of cultural and historical attractions.

Now that you know where to go, I hope you have an amazing time in Russia’s most beautiful city.

Pinellas Trail: Treasured bike trail from St. Pete north

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: August 1, 2023

The Pinellas Trail is a treasure, and anyone lucky enough to live near it has access to what is probably the best urban bike trail in Florida.

It’s not perfect – it’s not always scenic and riders will experience lots of stops at intersections as the trail crosses road after road.

But how can you complain when you find a wide, paved, well-marked trail that extends for 54 miles through one of the most densely populated areas in the state? I wish it were in my county!

Shaded section of the Pinellas Trail

My husband and I bicycled a section of the Pinellas Trail while exploring the spectacular beaches on barrier islands north of St. Petersburg.  We took the universal advice you find online: That the most scenic part of the trail is its northern portion, between Dunedin and Tarpon Springs.

We found pretty views, parks to discover, historic buildings and cute downtowns. We also found plenty of suburban backyards, the back-sides of businesses, boring views of commercial roadways and shadelessness.

The Pinellas Trail is a mixed bag, so set your expectations accordingly.

A bridge over the Pinellas Trail

Pinellas Trail was built first to make bicycling safer

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail starts in downtown St. Petersburg and follows the old CSX railway right of way for 50 miles to Tarpon Springs and on to the Pasco County line.  Its story began in 1983, inspired by the vision of a man whose son was killed riding his bike. The first six-mile section opened in 1990, and it’s been expanding ever since.

It is heartening to see how much it is used, and by all sorts of people. With a separate, well-marked pedestrian lane, it attracts and comfortably accommodates dog-walkers, joggers, wheelchairs and strollers.

You’ll see every type of bicyclist – some poking along on training wheels; others whizzing by on recumbent bikes.  With more than 1.5 million users a year, the Pinellas Trail ranks as one of the most heavily used rail-trails in America, according to the Rails to Trails Conservancy.

We enjoyed exploring the Pinellas Trail, particularly the opportunity to stop at interesting spots along the way.

Pinellas Trail spur extends to Honeymoon Island State Park

Highlights on the northern section of the Pinellas Trail:

  • Dunedin’s downtown , where the Pinellas Trail serves as a “main thoroughfare” because the downtown grew up around the old railroad tracks. Local merchants have embraced the trail, catering to the steady stream of visitors it brings. In cute and historic Dunedin, you’ll find a great variety of ice cream shops, coffee shops, restaurants and breweries, some facing directing on “the Trail,” as residents call it. Here’s our guide to visiting Dunedin , a great base for biking the trail. (Dunedin is 25.7 miles from the start of the trail in St. Petersburg.)

Pinellas Trail as it crosses Main Street in downtown Dunedin. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

  • Weaver Park , just north of Dunedin, where you look through a shaded picnic grove to a view of the Gulf. If you take a short detour off the Pinellas Trail and cross the park and Bayshore Drive, you can head out to the free 725-foot fishing pier with expansive views .
  • The Pinellas Trail spur to Honeymoon Island State Park , which runs along the Dunedin Causeway. The trail offers a safe way for bicyclists to pedal to the beach and enjoy scenic views of St. Joseph Sound.

Spring in park along the Pinellas Trail

  • Wall Springs County Park , a shady spot for a picnic right off the Pinellas Trail a few miles north of Dunedin. Wall Springs was a historical, natural spring, once used as a spa and swimming area. Today, there’s a boardwalk around the old spring with interesting displays explaining the history. (Sorry, no swimming though.) This park is a trailhead on the Pinellas Trail.
  • The  sponge docks in Tarpon Springs . This touristy few blocks along the Anclote River is full of Greek restaurants. It’s just a few moments detour from the Pinellas Trail.
  • North Anclote River Nature Park , near the northern end of the trail in Tarpon Springs. Another spur off the Pinellas Trail heads into a wooded park with shell-rock trails winding around waterways.

Planning your ride on the Pinellas Trail

Pinellas County has done a lot of things right with this trail, and one of them is the extensive, helpful information available. Each section of the trail has a detailed guide, with a map and information about parking, water fountains, restrooms, bike rental and repair shops, restaurants, lodging and more. I printed out this information to plan our trip and used it the whole way. If you’re planning a trip on the Pinellas Trail, I recommend you spend time with this material to plan your route.

As I researched which section of the Pinellas Trail to ride, I found residents expressed concerns about the safety and attractiveness of southern sections of the trail once you leave downtown St. Pete.

One of the most popular sections is the quarter-mile-long Cross Bayou Bridge which spans Boca Ciega Bay. The $4 million bridge was built specifically for the Pinellas Trail — that’s right, no vehicles at all — and the views are terrific.

The Pinellas Trail is generally 15-feet wide and paved with asphalt or concrete. It is flat, except for 10 overpasses and a few hills in Miles 37 and 40 in Tarpon Springs.

More tips on Pinellas Trail

  • The Pinellas Trail is rolling out a change in its traffic flow. For the past 30 years, cyclists rode on one side of the trail and pedestrians used the other side. Now, everyone will use the trail on their right-hand side and pass on the left, as drivers do on the roadways. Some users of the trail have objected, but trail managers say this approach is what is used on most paved trails and it works well.
  • Cylists looking to cover a distance sometimes bike the whole trail in one direction, stay overnight in Tarpon Springs, and pedal back the next day.
  • In our experience, drivers were very courteous to bikers at intersections. Still, you have to slow down and/or stop frequently as you cross streets, which may be a frustration for those who work up some speed.
  • Despite its amenities, come prepared with cell phone, extra water and sun screen.
  • Does the Pinellas Trail allow electric bikes? The Pinellas Trail permits e-bikes that require a combination of human power and electric motor power. There is a 20-mile-per-hour speed limit.
  • Want a trail that is less urban? The Pinellas Trail isn’t the only long, paved bike trail in the region. We love the Withlachoochee Trail , which starts six miles north of Dade City and runs through forests and rural hamlets.
  • The Pinellas Trail connects in downtown St. Petersburg with the beautiful North Bay Trail. This multiuse trail extends six miles north from where it meets the Pinellas Trail at First Avenue Southeast at Bayshore Drive, where the Pinellas Trail originates. The first three miles of the North Bay Trail are along a scenic path that hugs the bay with views of parks and historic homes. Read more about this trail in this Florida Rambler story: Seven things to do in St. Petersburg for Old Florida flavor.
  • The Pinellas Trail is part of a growing network of bike trails . There will soon be a completed Pinellas Trail Loop. An eastern portion of the loop is being developed that will use powerline corridors and roadsides instead of abandoned railroads. More than 20 miles have been completed. The Pinellas Trail also will form the western end of the 250-mile Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail connecting Titusville and St. Petersburg. It is 88 percent complete!

Enjoyed Pinellas trail ride, Pasco county line to St. Pete and return next day. The 12 bike overpasses were wonderful.

Thursday 13th of January 2022

They need to ban the e-bikes from the trail, especially in the Dunedin area where riders rent bikes and pay no attention to the other riders on bicycles and pedestrians. I’ve been sideswiped more than a few times by e-bike riders that either pass without allowing for enough room and by groups of people that ride 3 or more abreast. The trail was made to be a safe place to ride and walk, and even before e-bikes were allowed there was still a lot of close calls, now it’s made worse by these “mopeds”.

Thursday 26th of August 2021

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Indian Shores. The beach and pool were nice, but the riding on the trail was awesome. We did Dunedin to Klostermsn Rd and back twice, Belleview Rd by Belleair Country Club to the St Petersburg’s KOA the other 2 times. The section up north of Dunedin is really getting bumpy. It’s just generally a rough road. Love to visit the breweries in Dunedin on the way back. HOB is great. But the bumps are rough on the neck.

The section south of Belleair Contry Club to the KOA is in better condition. I like this section better, there seems to be less cross roads, definitely less traffic at the cross roads. There is also more shade. A tad bit more sketchy here, but I never felt unsafe and saw a lot of people older than me on bikes. But seeing drunks sitting on the benches smoking and drinking, and people standing near the trail looking at you with a mischievous look, and were obviously not there biking or exercising was something I didn’t see on the north end. Biking partner suspected drug deals going down, but who knows?

This is in the top three of my favorite bike trails. The best being the Neuse River Trail in Raleigh, and second best, the Legacy Trail south of Sarasota.

Thank you, Bonnie, for your thorough and objective report about the Pinellas Trail. Thanks too for keeping it updated.
