Jools Holland is the face of live music in the U.K. As unlikely a statement as that might have been back in his days playing the keyboards in New Wavers Squeeze, nowadays it’s pretty much unquestionable, as much a part of the TV furniture as Doctor Who or The News at Ten. However, while we’ve seen him play some impressive piano on his deathless TV show, for most part it’s been featured on songs that have had no real need for it. If you want to see where his boogie-woogie piano style really shines it’s in his shows with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. He and singer Ruby Turner front a twenty piece backing band and together they do what they do best, tear roofs off venues at twenty paces with the power of Old school rhythm and blues, Turner’s vocal mastery and absolutely exquisite musicianship. It might be an underrated quality when it comes to the blues but every single member of the orchestra is an absolute virtuoso, and when paired up with twenty years of experience they really do earn the title of the “world’s greatest big band”. I mean, if they’re good enough to be fronted by singers like Adele, Florence Welch, Paloma Faith, Gregory Porter and Annie Lennox then they’re definitely good enough for anyone to see as soon as possible.

The whole evening was great! The opening guitarist was a great player but his music wasn't to my taste.
When Jools and the band went on stage with their opening number, I loved it from start to end. The only bad thing about the evening was the sound quality made all the instruments combine into the same dynamic which made hearing the solos quite difficult to hear at times! However, I don't blame anybody from Jools' team for this because myself and those who joined me agree that it was either where we were sitting or the mixing at the desk.
Apart from those minor flaws it didn't diminish the night for me one bit! I was pleasantly surprised when Ruby Turner came on stage because her name wasn't on the bill, so that made the experience even better.

Jools Holland said: “Myself, my piano and Orchestra are thrilled to bits because our special guests this year are Pauline Black and Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson of The Selecter. This magnificent addition will amplify our Ska music credentials and bring an extra razzy dazzy spasm to our dance capabilities. Coupled with our own Boogie Queen and Enchantress, Ruby Turner, this mix will result in one of the most dynamic shows we’ve ever had. But it doesn’t stop there, adding her delicious voice and harmonic enchantments to the evening, will be our very own, Louise Marshall. Further, for your aural delectation we introduce, the much sought after and wonderful new voice of Sumudu Jayatilaka. All this music will be underpinned by the drums of my Squeeze co-founder, Gilson Lavis and decorated by the scintillating soloists of the Orchestra.”
