Welcome to the Furniture Manufacturing Capital of the World

The furniture history runs so deep in our community that its roots intertwine with countless industries, businesses, and common aspects of everyday life. It is estimated that approximately 60% of all furniture in American homes originates from North Carolina furniture manufacturers and related industry vendors. And many of these furniture businesses are located right here in our region. If you ever visit Hickory, you will notice that almost everywhere you turn, the people you meet all have some furniture connection. Whether their grandfather hauled lumber to a local sawmill for furniture production, their father worked directly in a factory upholstering furniture, or their aunt worked as an interior designer helping visitors select the best furniture for their homes, for over a century, this community has truly been shaped by furniture. To this day, when you travel around the world and tell people where you are from, they almost always smile and recite that one familiar word: FURNITURE.

A Tiny North Carolina Town You've Never Heard of Makes Most of America's Furniture

The story of High Point.

Furniture, Wood, Interior design, Chair, Room, Table, Design, Building, Hardwood, Machine,

One week each April and October, the basement of the First United Methodist Church in High Point, North Carolina, is bustling with designers, bloggers, and editors from New York, Los Angeles, and across the United States, Europe, and Asia, eating homemade turkey chili and pimento cheese sandwiches at folding plastic tables. This somewhat unlikely colliding of worlds is Parson's Table, a sort of pop-up restaurant run by entrepreneurial churchgoers—and one of the many quirky, beloved traditions of High Point Market, the biggest event that you may have never heard of.

So Wha t Is High Point?

High Point, for most of the year, is a modestly sized city in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, whose approximately 100,000 population (108,629 as of the 2014 census) is comprised largely of students, faculty, and staff at the tony private High Point University. Twice a year, though, the city nearly doubles in size, attracting more than 80,000 visitors as it plays host to High Point Furniture Market, the largest furniture trade fair in the world and a biannual showcase of the region's most historic industry.

The biannual event draws in an estimated $140 million in revenue for the city between hotel reservations, dining, transportation, and more. The First United Methodist Church congregation isn't the only group to smartly make an unconventional business out of the market: Dozens of food trucks and pop-up vendors head to the city for market, and the city's (and neighboring towns') fire department hires itself out as drivers for fairgoers—after all, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone knows the fastest routes around the city better.

How Did it Become So Huge?

High Point's niche industry comes, as most do, thanks to a combination of geographical and cultural factors. The city, situated amid forestland that offered a healthy supply of timber, saw its first surge of furniture-making in the 17th century, when English makers settled there and continued their craft in a new homeland. During the Reconstruction era, burgeoning manufacturers benefited from cheap labor, which only increased with the completion of the Southern Railway by the late 19th century, an advancement that also enabled for easy export of the region's products.

In 1909, the High Point Furniture Exposition Company and the Furniture Manufacturers Exposition Company joined forces to put on a new trade show, and the Southern Furniture Market was born. The event's history after that generally follows the course of American history at large: A standstill during World War I, a postwar boom, success in the 1920s followed by a devastating lull after the 1929 Crash, then the added blow of World War II and, subsequently, an even larger postwar boom. The market has continued to fluctuate since then (with a notable dip following the 2008 recession), but, nevertheless, High Point has remained the world's largest furniture market for decades.

Just How Big Is it?

The city comprises some 12 million square feet of showroom. Yes, million. These hold everything from carpets to canopy beds—and, truly, everything in between. In the Suites at Market Square, one of High Point's main buildings, dozens of antique and vintage vendors also offer a more aged alternative to the newness rolling out each season.

Though High Point's designation as a furniture capital stems largely from the manufacturing done in and around its city limits, by now its exhibitors hail from far and wide, with companies from all over the globe renting or operating space in the city to show at each market.

Room, White, Dining room, Furniture, Interior design, Blue, Curtain, Property, Home, Table,

Even in our ever-globalized world, though, there's still plenty of manufacturing going on within a short distance of the city. Heritage brands like Hickory Chair and Century Furniture as well as younger companies like Mitchell Gold Bob Williams and Lee Industries make their furniture in factories in the area, some over a hundred years old. In recent years, new businesses have recognized the area's expertise in manufacturing by setting up shop there: Even though it doesn't show at the market, startup furniture brand Maiden Home, for example, makes its direct-to-consumer furniture in 3rd- and 4th-generation family factories in the region.

Wood, Furniture, Hardwood, Room, Brickwork, woodworking, Home, Chair, House, Workshop,

Why Have I Never Heard of it?

If you're not a professional designer—or even, possibly, if you are—chances are high you wouldn't know about the market unless you were either a fanatic furniture enthusiast or lived in the area. That's because, despite its large size, the market is open exclusively to the trade—that is, only licensed interior designers or retail buyers can enter the hundreds of showroom spaces throughout the city and its many convention centers (with the exception of selected events, which may be open to the public at the discretion of their hosts).

What Happens There the Rest of the Year?

In the off season, High Point becomes somewhat of a ghost town—12 million square feet of showroom space is a lot of empty space when those showrooms are closed. But, recent innovations in the city are striving to bridge that gap: Plant Seven, a coworking and event space-meets-business incubator is looking to attract young businesses and entice them to work in the area year-round. Meanwhile, up the road, work at the factories will keep humming along, churning out your next sofa or armchair. And now you know where it comes from.

I’m not sure when you went to Furnitureland South but you don’t have to buy the whole group of furniture in the outlet anymore. I was just there a few weeks ago… There are a very few sets that come as a group but most can be split apart in their outlet and you can haul them ASAP which is a nice advantage especially now with long wait times thanks to COVID. We love going there but it can be overwhelming and you have to know name brands and what your looking for. There’s so much to explore in HP and we are still learning too.

Hi Rebecca! Thanks for the update. I was there in July 2019, so it has been a while since my visit. I am so glad to hear that they are allowing the purchase of individual pieces from the outlet. That makes so much more sense. I’m not sure when we will make it back down to High Point again, but we will definitely give the outlet another shot when we do.

Admiring the time and energy you put into your website and detailed information you provide. It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed material. Fantastic read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.

Thank you for reading!

I just got back from Furnitureland South. I basically knew what I wanted and went with the intention of getting best pricing and ordering. I have ordered furniture from FLS 3 times over past 20 years and had great experiences and received lower prices than I could find anywhere else. While researching buying furniture this time, Lexington Furniture Company located in Lexington, KY popped up with good reviews and comments. Lexington Furniture was much less than FLS on the King Hickory sectional and ottoman (including taxes and delivery). I also wanted Zimmerman Chairs and reached out to Zimmerman for local distributor and was given Cherry House Furniture Galleries in La Grange KY. Cherry House prices were much better on Side and Arm chairs. Anyone looking to purchase furniture, try these 2 stores. FLS does have unbelievable resources on site and phenomenal showrooms, but pricing is not what it used to me based on my recent experience. Good luck furniture and shopping and buying.

Hi Myra: Thank you for sharing your experiences and recommendations! I was also disappointed with the prices as FLS, but it is an impressive place to visit. I appreciate you sharing the information about some other stores where you were able to find better pricing. I am sure your new pieces will look great in your home!

I really want to thank you for this review. We live in Charlotte and absolutely love Bernhardt and I was struggling to figure out if I should go to the Bernhardt Outlet or furnitureland and you have made it very easy for me to choose.

I’ve twice gone to Furnitureland South – once in 2020 and then another in August 2023 (for which I am still waiting for my order to arrive and yes it’s February). The experience is overwhelming and easy to get swayed by the salesperson and the large showroom, so I agree with you. This is our last order with them, although I’d like to try the other outlets you suggested. FLS has poor service, long wait times, and they churn through designers who are really just order takers for the average person. They are always looking for the whales who are rich rich rich people who are doing their entire home. Not the value for the cost.

I cannot recommendation High Point Furniture Shopping Tours enough. My husband and I recently purchased a new home. Neither of us has a great eye for decorating. This is our dream home and we didn't want to mess it up. I found Shannon on the High Point Chamber of Commerce website. I found him to be very professional, organized, timely, patient and kind. We sent him our floor plans, photos of our home, and photos of decor that we liked from magazines. He made recommendations regarding the manufacturers that matched our tastes and hooked us up with a great designer. He was very clear that he worked for us. His only concern was that we were happy. He explained important details or directed the designer to do it. He kept an eye on the clock and helped us achieve our shopping goals within the time and budget we allotted. Even more, he was simply the kindest fellow you could ever meet. I don't believe that I will ever shop for furniture any other way ever again!

Shannon is unbelievable......he goes out of his way to pre-plan a trip, understand your needs and make the experience successful. My wife and I would have been totally overwhelmed and frustrated had it not been for his direction. He is worth every penny and then some.

If you are planning a trip to High Point, NC to buy furniture, you should absolutely consider enlisting the services of Shannon Neal of High Point Furniture Shopping Tours. We would never have found our beautiful dining set and sofas without his contacts and extensive knowledge of manufacturers and showrooms. He provided us with pick up and drop off service, complete with follow up to help with shipping options. We were impressed with Shannon's genuine interest in assuring our complete trip from home and back was productive and satisfying. No

We are refinishing our hardwood floors on our main level and buying all new furniture for our dining room, living room, kitchen and guest bedroom. Friends had recommended visiting High Point, N.C. for furniture shopping as it is the furniture mecca of the USA. Our friends had furnished their entire house years ago. We initially had planned to need 4 to 5 days to shop since there are hundreds of furniture manufacturers to choose from. Where to start and how to find their showrooms? We wanted to touch and feel the furniture before buying. Browsing the internet to learn how others had successfully shopped for furniture in High Point, I stumbled across "High Point Furniture Shopping Tours" and read TripAdvisors' reviews. All the reviews were rated five stars (++)! I contacted Shannon, and he emailed information about his services and what his clients can expect. I realized I could cut my furniture shopping time by 2 to 3 days by utilizing Shannon's services. Shannon provided us lists and lists of furniture manufacturers' websites to review to identify furniture pieces we liked. We spent hours researching these furniture websites and identified a few choices for each piece of furniture we planned to buy. Be sure you know your current furniture size and dimensions. Also, the room dimensions for each room you plan to furnish. Investing time upfront will reduce your furniture shopping by days. Shannon picked us up at our hotel and stayed with us the entire day, ensuring all our needs were taken care of. He arranged private showroom appointments with the furniture manufacturers based on the furniture pieces we identified. Fortunately for us, one large location had manufacturers' showrooms for each furniture piece we wanted to see in person. Shannon scheduled a furniture specialist to work with us who was very professional and knew the inventory of all manufacturers quite well. We ended up purchasing several different furniture models other than the ones we had initially liked after seeing them in person. We highly recommend using Shannon's services. We had booked our trip for three days of furniture shopping. We finished our furniture shopping in one day, which left us two days to enjoy exploring Greensboro and NC. Shannon also communicated with us every day while we were in NC to make sure everything was okay. Thank you, Shannon. You made our furniture shopping adventure very successful, fun, and memorable!

Photo of Jennifer G.

I typically do not write reviews but in this case it is so well deserved and we highly recommend him. We spent a number of days with Shannon shopping for our home and it was stress free, he was highly attentive to our needs, and the value add far exceeded any of our expectations for his services. He listened to every pre-planning request, took the time to understand our style, scope of shopping needs, and make recommendations to maximize our shopping experience. Prior to our arrival, everything was planned out in advance, and he went above and beyond to make sure the day went like clockwork getting us to the places and visiting manufacturers with a VIP experience. There is no way we could of covered the ground and looking for furnitures in such a targeted fashion without him guiding us throughout the day. Not once ever did we feel pressured to buy anything and he was beyond respectful of our time, always encouraging us to spend as long or as short of amount during each manufacturer visit. Worth every penny. Thank you Shannon.

Photo of J D.

Shannon was a great discovery! Shannon took me to a number of showrooms, many of them not open to the public, so I could see a wide array of furniture, furnishings matching my style, taste, budget, décor. Showrooms in High Point are not centrally located, but are located throughout the city. Shannon made logistics that could have been difficult on my own, a breeze to navigate in an efficient manner. Shannon works with the best personnel in each showroom - who are polite, informative, passionate about their product, but never pushy, never aggressive to make a sale. He is also a great personality and easy to spend the day with. I would highly recommend Shannon Neal / High Point Furniture Shopping Tours - for anyone planning to make a furniture shopping trip to High Point, NC.

Shannon is our go to guy! Before our trip to Highpoint, Shannon asked a lot of questions to determine what we were looking for. Answering those questions really helped us make some decisions. He asked us to provide anything to demonstrate our inspiration; pictures of furniture we liked, the style and look we wanted to accomplish for our new home so that he could guide us to the stores that would have the type of furniture we were looking for. After a few conversations he sent us links to many of the vast number of manufacturers and stores that had the style and type of furniture we were looking for. Reviewing those helped us to further narrow down what we wanted all the while staying within our budget. Once we were in Highpoint we immediately knew we were in good hands with Shannon. He is a perfect example of that southern hospitality that has welcomed us as we are relocating from Seattle to Atlanta. It could have been a very stressful weekend trying to find all of the furniture we needed in 1 1/2 days but not so with our guide. Based on all of the information we had shared back and forth beforehand, Shannon lined us up with a top-notch designer that walked us through manufactures that fit our style and our budget. It was a terrific "marriage" that helped guide us to what we wanted in a very, very, short period of time (not that it still took several hours to get there), but still in a LOT less time than would have taken us if we were on our own. During the entire time we spent with our designer, Shannon was always nearby, Johnny-on-the-spot to meet our every need and asking questions on our behalf about the furniture that we did not think of or even know to ask. He has a long background in the furniture industry and easily shared that experience and knowledge without influencing our decisions. During our time with Shannon he kept us focused on our goal but there were also lots of laughs and stories told throughout the weekend. He also made great recommendations for our evening meals, both nights were excellent!

In North Carolina, various factory tours offer you an inside peek into the behind-the-scenes working of the creation of some of your favorite snacks or products. Looking for something different to fill a Saturday? Try these four factory tours.

1. Ashe County Cheese Factory, West Jefferson

alt

You scream, I scream, we all scream for - cheese! Well, that's my rendition at least. As a fellow cheese lover, I can say visiting a cheese factory will give you an entirely new insight into how this savory snack is created (and hello, free samples). Ashe County Cheese Factory has been in business since 1930 when it was started by Kraft to help consolidate small community cheese plants in the area. In 1981, it was sold to Jerry Glick and Doug Rudersdorf, two notable Wisconsin cheese connoisseurs, and quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in North Carolina.

alt

While today the factory is under new ownership by Mike Everhart and Tom Torkelson (Torkelson is regarded as one of the finest cheese makers in America) it's still known for its famous old style cheddar daisy wheels and its notable Sienna Cheese. The store received a serious makeover in 2007 allowing visitors to see how the cheese is made and shop around for more than cheese but also local provisions. For the best time to plan a visit, check the cheese making schedule on their website. For cheese lovers like myself, this is the trip of a lifetime! For more information on Ashe County Cheese Factory, read our guide here.

2. Black Mountain Chocolate Factory, Winston-Salem

alt

On the complete other end of the spectrum, those more on the sweet tooth side will love a visit to Black Mountain Chocolate Shop. While the namesake reflects the small town outside of Asheville, Black Mountain was bought by longtime banker Brent Peters and relocated to Winston-Salem's vibrant arts district along Trade St. You might have seen Black Mountain Chocolate bars at other retailers across the state, but for a wide variety of chocolate treats, visiting the brick and mortar factory is your best bet.

alt

The factory is open daily for self-guided tours allowing visitors to see a behind-the-glass-scene of how the chocolate is made. On select Saturdays, guided tours allow you to witness the true inner workings of what it means to be 'bean to bar.' The 40-minute tour covers the entire process from roasting the beans to creating the chocolate bar. Tickets go on sale prior to the tour with many selling out before Saturday. It's best to stay up-to-date with their social media to find out when a tour will take place and reserve your spot. For a unique option, Black Mountain also offers private group tours that can be scheduled W-F at 11 a.m. For more information on Black Mountain Chocolate Factory, read our guide here. 732 Trade St NW, Winston-Salem, NC 27101

3. Homeland Creamery, Julian

alt

We've covered cheese and chocolate, so of course, our next factory tour is somewhere in the middle or maybe complete left field....ice cream! Not only does Homeland Creamery make delectable homemade ice cream, they're also open for fun, interactive tours around the farm that include a 20-minute hayride, meet and greet with the cows, and visiting the milking parlor.

alt

While other factory tours sometimes require a bit of adult appreciation, Homeland Creamery tour is geared towards all ages and especially fun for little ones. The hayride allows you to see the behind the scenes of the farm and meet some of the milking cows.

alt

Children are also allowed to pet the cows and will love seeing baby calfs (and possibly bottle feeding them!) There's also the simulated Miss Betty that teaches you how milk makes its way from the cow to the grocery store. While Homeland Creamery is known for its ice cream, their chocolate milk has been deemed 'addictive,' and visitors can pick up farm fresh goodies like local cheese, sausage and eggs from the store. For a family-friendly activity with a sweet end, Homeland Creamery is a unique tour! For more information on Homeland Creamery

read our guide here. 6506 Bowman Dairy Rd, Julian, NC 27283

4. Mrs. Hanes Moravian Cookies, Clemmons

alt

Winston-Salem is known for its rich Moravian heritage, and with that comes quality Moravian Cookies. The thin cookies with ginger and cinnamon notes are popular come Christmas, but in Winston, are found year-round. Each cookie here is rolled and cut by hand and come in five flavors including Ginger, Sugar, Lemon, Chocolate, Butterscotch, and Black Walnut.

alt

Mrs. Hanes isn't just a simple little place making Moravian cookies, it's the largest hand-made cookie company in the world. For a small fee, tours are given January-September allowing you to see the final process from mixing the dough to sampling the finished product. While tours end in September, there's a special viewing area available year-round to see the cookie chronicles. For teachers or schools, one option is a field trip. Children love to witness the process (and go home with some cookies) while teachers love the unique option that isn't your 'cookie-cutter' day away. While plenty have visited Mrs. Hanes, a few famous faces have also tasted the hand-made cookies, including Lauren Bacall, Barbara Walters, Doris Day and Katherine Hepburn. 4643 Friedberg Church Road

Clemmons, NC 27012

A nighttime river float in North Carolina may sound like a dream, but it's real!  This excursion is available at Outer Banks Kayak Adventures in two choices: the Bioluminescence and Full Moon Kayak Tours. Have you ever watched a firefly light up the summer sky? This is a bioluminescent organism. In the ocean — from bacteria to fish — most types of creatures include some bioluminescent members. This kayak tour showcases these glowing life forms in the sea. And if stargazing is your preference, schedule your tour during a full moon. Either way, kayaking at night in North Carolina is unforgettable. Let's see why you should book one of these incredible adventures at OBX.

These kayaks await their drivers for the exciting launch of the Bioluminescence Tour.

alt

This magical journey begins just after sunset wrapping participants in a warm glow.

alt

The start time will change throughout the season, which is mid-May through mid-September, based on weather-related information.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism.

alt

This evening journey is something you'll want to experience at least once, especially for the wide-open exposure to this extraordinary horizon.

alt

The excitement of the nighttime river float builds as you paddle out.

alt

Be on the lookout for the illuminated animals.

alt

Once it gets completely dark, you’ll be able to see the glowing life in the water.

alt

Another option we love is the Full Moon Kayak Tour which provides a dreamy experience on the water.

alt

If you prefer twinkling stars - this one's for you. Book this tour during a full moon.
