Dew Tour 2023 Results and BTS Photos
The Dew Tour wrapped in Copper, Colorado and It’s hard to argue, that despite any podium results, that the unequivocal “winner” of the Dew Tour was 11 year old Patti Zhou. With each interview, her responses seemed to grow in hilarity, so we made compilation.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by SlushMag (@slushthemagazine)
Beyond the star power that Patti brought into this broadcast, we are also shown a glimpse into the budding rivalry that is likely to ensue between Zhou and Gaon Choi, the 14 year old Korean pipe rider who also just took gold at X Games, and will likely enter a long run of podiums so long as Chloe Kim continues to refrain from competition.
Men’s superpipe turned out to be quite the nail biter as well, with Taylor Gold and Ayumu Hirano, relying on their final runs to propel them into the top two spots. Ayumu would successfully put down a pair of 1440s, a crippler, back 9, straight into frontside 1260 to earn a score of 96.66. Gold came back from last position into second in his last run with a solid line packed with one massive air to fakie that sticks with us. Raibu Katayama on the other hand, entered the contest swinging, as his first run would hold him in podium position for the entirety of the contest.
We would be remiss to not mention that perhaps our favorite part was when Ayumu denied doing an interview after his winning run.
After the Superpipe contest wrapped, a Big Air jam ensued with both skiers and snowboarders. Ayumu and Raibu battled back and forth for highest air, with Atom ultimately winning the day with a massive 22’ 8” air. The most important takeaway here was that Snowboarders went bigger than skiers.
On the other end of the spectrum was the streetsyle event. The format broke riders into three separate heats of four riders, the top two advancing to a head to head round that would dictate the final three riders facing off in finals.
In the women’s comp, Alexis Roland would prove victorious through the help of a switchback 50 combo and full pulls through the course.
Slush Mag Rookie if the year, Egan Wint brought the heat while dawning a pink cast on her wrist with Hot Coco head honcho Maria Thomsen taking third place despite a bone bruise on her knee that was making even walking a challenge.
The “Papa Johns Flip It Award'' (yea, we don't know) was awarded to Jaylen Hanson for her impressive Front Board Pretzel. Jaylen rode incredibly well.
The men’s competition wrapped the whole event, as the legs of completion brought on a number of upsets in the second round, as one of the favorites to win, Darcy Sharpe was eliminated by LJ Henriquez. Nate Haust seemed to be unbeatable though as his winning run consisted of a 450 out that was simply bolts, which combined with his other tricks gave him a score of 92.33. Haust was also awarded the Papa Johns Flip It Award for the Cab 270 on, 450 out for the $2,500 cash prize. Haust won after a tense couple minutes in the corale standing next to Benny Milam, who also had an impressive run

Dew Tour calls it quits.
It’s been a long, storied road for one of the biggest competitions in freeskiing and snowboarding, but it looks like the buck finally stops here. After over a decade and a half of high-flying competition, the Winter Dew Tour will not return for another round. Once a major Olympic qualifier and arguably one of the biggest stops on the competition circuit, the Dew Tour has run into hard times over the last few years. It now sees itself up against a new crop of competitions like the new Shaun White snow series. There is no word on whether or not the crew at Dew is looking into a rebrand or relaunch, but for now, it looks like it’s out with the old and out with the Dew.
Rising Italian ski star dead after training crash.
Matilde Lorenzi , a promising 19-year-old from Italy, passed away this week after a crash in training in northern Italy. She competed in the FIS Junior World Championships last year, placing 6th in the downhill, and had her sights on a World Cup debut. The news sent shockwaves through the race community just days after the FIS World Cup debuted for the season in Sölden, Austria. Our condolences to Lorenzi’s family and the entire Italian ski federation.
Hawaii got 4 inches of snow this week, how ya doin?
Sure, we have a few more openings to report (whatup Sunday River Halloween skiers?), but can we all just slow down and acknowledge that Hawaii just got hit by a winter storm in…October?! Meteorologists confirmed that Mauna Kea received up to 4 inches of snow this week—a proper dump for this tropical paradise. Now, snow is not uncommon on the large shield volcano, but a base this early is certainly rare. Anyone out there headed to shred the big kahuna?
The world’s most photographed skier has a documentary.
Ok, I’m kind of into this. Sven Brunso has made a career of not only getting the shot, but being the shot for some of the most iconic ski magazine covers in the sport’s history. Over 30 years, Brunso has made a career out of landing coveted magazine real estate, and is considered a go-to athlete for snow photographers worldwide. So what’s behind the cover? This new doc gets into the mind and motivations of one of skiing’s most shot man. This is just a trailer, but I’m stoked to check the full thing out when it drops in December.

Ayumu Hirano threw down the biggest airs of the day with a clutch fourth and final run in the Men’s Snowboard Superpipe, taking the top spot with a high score of 96.66. Taylor Gold kept the suspense going to the final run, stomping down his only clean run of the day and earning a 91.33 from the judges for a second-place finish.

Dew Tour continued with Streetstyle, Gus Kenworthy and Hunter Hess provided the laughs and wisdom. The course had four sets of features and the competition would run as a qualifying heats with head-to-head finals where the riders would have to put down two different runs with both counting. Walker Shredz kicked things off as a forerunner lacing a front 3 swap continuing 2 on the final flat down.
Heat 1 - Hall, Zahner, Kilbride, Bacher
Alex Hall transferred across three rails on the second set of features, bailing on the final hit and getting caught up, Zahner also got caught on the final feature. Keegan came out of the gates with his signature switch 270 noses under completing the first full run with style. Dani Bacher, oozes steeze, lip on blind 2 on the firecracker from far out and missed his blind swap transfer on the second set. In his second run, A Hall laced the final switch lip frontswap transfer front 2 for 81.33. Sam Zahner cleaned things up, with a front 3 swap to regs on the final transfer feature, 79.00. Dani Bacher missed his blindswap again but front-flipped a rail takeoff for a prize bounty. In Run 3 A Hall swapped out his switch lip front swap pretz 2 for switch lip super fed. Dani Bacher put down a super elusive on the final transfer to donkey dick, earning 69.00. Alex Hall and Sam Zahner advanced.
Heat 2 - Fitzsimons, Dufresne, Egan, Koukov
Heat 2 had the boys firing cleanly from the word go. Tucker skied out of the gates with his signature speed and tech, 81.66 opened the scoring. Matt Duff opened things with a lip 2 to switch, with a left 2 and right 2 on as well as a super fed on the polejam to wallride. Pete Koukov brought his creativity to the course, lacing a 270 to backslide and a one-footer on the long down rail and taking a tight ski through to the wallride to do a right 450 out of it. Tucker opened with a 2P4 on the top right-hand rail and closing things with a 450 to regs on the final rail, but coming off early on the long down rail lip disaster back 2. The overall step-up of tech on the top and bottom features had him score 83.66. Matt Duff, sitting in second cleaned things up adding to his score, 76.33. Andrew Eagan put down both ways switch tails too, he tried to hold a backslide on the left variant on the flat down but touched a little, he closed the gap on Dufrense scoring 71.33. Koukov went for a right cork 630 off the wallride but couldn't squeak it around. Matt Duff continued to give himself space in the final run, Egan held his backslide to the end on the final hit, getting a little caught up trying to get a continuing 2 but bringing it around just about, this was enough to get ahead of Dufrense, likely for spinning left and right with his 270s. Fitzsimons and Egan advanced.
Heat 3 - Stevenson, Carson, Therriault, Barrett
Colby opened up with a switch left 2P4 on the waterfall, a blind 3 swap that he didn't lock in, left 2 continuing 2 on the drop down and a super fed transfer on the final section, 82.66 and preliminary first. Cal Carson skied a little loose even by his standards but had a nice variety of tricks although was hindered on the scoring due to a lack of cleanliness. Edjoy switch blender tails on back 2 to open things, switch on back 4 off the transfer rail on the death kink at the bottom was super nice, 73.33 was enough for a current chance to advance. Colby locked up his front 3 swap and got the continuing 2 he missed in run 1, allowing him to go for the rightside 4 onto the drop-down, he set the bar with 86.66 and the highest score of the night so far. Cal Carson surprised everyone with a switch 2 continuing 6 but his run remained behind Edjoy's. Edjoy stepped things up with a switch blender tails 2, left 2 continuing 4, lip 2 continuing 2 and the final switch on transfer to back 4 was cleaner, bumping his score to 77.33. Calvin Barrett laced a run with a lip 2 a broken slide back 2, and a left 2 cont 2 but would stay at the bottom of the pack. Colby showed his class with a totally new run that still scored in the 80s. Calvin cleaned things up but wouldn't be rewarded that well for it and the crowd agreed with some boos. Stevenson and Therriault advanced.
Head-To-Head
Hall v Zahner
Alex Hall's first run had wallie backswap to regs on the first feature, sitch 2 continuing 2 and repeated the switch lip Ellen on the transfer rail. Egan put down switch lip back 2, left 2 backslide continuing 2 but fell on the pole jam wallride back 2 leaving the door open for A Hall. Hall continues to show his quality with a NB 4 to regs, right 2 continuing, 2 backswap to switch finished with a switch left 2 cont 2. Egan had some issues with speed and didn't put down a clean second run and Alex took the W in this battle with 88.00.
Fitzsimons v Therriault
Tucker opened this battle with a right 2p4, left 4 to regs lip disaster front 2, switch 2 back 2. Clean as you like. Edjoy responded with blender switch tails on back 2, left 2 continuing 4, right 2 continuing to and the switch lip noses over transfer back 2 to finish. echoing his run from qualifiers. Tucker followed this first run with a switch left tails 2, polejam back 2, right 2 switch, and mirrored Edjoy's final trick. Edjoy got his tails hung up on a switch tails 4, then took the road less travelled getting up on the shipping container and sent a flat 450 off the wallride for the crowd and some extra cash, not enough to beat Tucker but Edjoy skied with signature style. Tucker won with 92.00.
Stevenson v Egan
Colby put down a solid first run, switch left 2p4 on the fire cracker, a super clean back 3 swap to switch followed by a switch right 2 cont 2 and a super fed on the final transfer to donkey. Andrew Egan missed his big transfer to the long down rail. Leaving a door open for Colby, although trying a front 3 swap on the transfer to donkey, one of the techiest hits of the night, although not locking it up. Right lip 2 to switch, switch 2 backslide continuing 2 from Colby with some 'mellower' hits on the bottom rails. Going front swap to switch not super fed on the pole jam to wallride due to getting a little caught up. Sam Zahner laced both way 2p2s but yet again missed his transfer. Colby took the W with 90.00.
Finals - Hall, Fitzsimons, Stevenson
Tucker opened proceedings with a right 2p2, bolts, left 4 to regs, lip disaster front 2 to switch left 2 disaster, 80.00. A Hall bump to backswap to regs, triple transfer again with a backswap but bobbled it. He is human. Colby put down a banger; switch left 2p4 on the waterfall, blind 3 swap continuing 2, right 4 pretz 2 92.66. Tucker responded with a right 2p4, switch left 2 continuing 2, lip disaster back 2, left 4 p2, it was good enough for 89.33 and second as Hall couldn't put it down clean in his final run. This left Colby with a victory lap.
1. Colby Stevenson
2. Tucker Fitzsimons
3. Alex Hall

Dew Tour Copper 2023 - It’s Just A Numbers Game
Tucked between the atmospheric rivers pounding the west coast and intermountain west, Dew Tour Copper 2023 provided the perfect reprieve for freeskiing and riding fans and athletes to celebrate this record-setting snow season. On our count, this year ‘s Dew Tour marks the franchise's 14th winter contest with Copper Mountain at the hosting helm for the last three years. Streamlined and dialed for crowd-pleasing high energy and style, the competition line up included: Super Streetstyle, Superpipe, Superpipe High Air and Best Trick Jam. Event masterminds didn’t disappoint. Known on comp circuits for its creativity and mixed-up contest formats to achieve ultimate crowd stoke, Dew Tour 2023 delivered high airs and big tricks.
Without Winter Olympic trials this year, athletes had more freedom to bring the stoke for the crowds. Olympic Gold Medalist Snowboarder, MTN DEW team rider and Summit County local Red Gerard commented ahead of the event, “The competitions will have some fun new course evolutions, so I’m hyped about the whole weekend!”
When you really get down to it, Dew Tour 2023 proved that age truly is just a number.
“Patti Zhou” - if you haven’t heard her name, it’s only a matter of time. Born in Beijing and now calling Silverthorne, Colorado home base, Zhou made mark in her inaugural Dew Tour appearance in the snowboard Superpipe and Super Streetstyle events. Zhou’s debut resulted in a second place finish in Snowboard Superpipe, becoming the youngest athlete to ever land a winter Dew Tour podium (and the second-youngest ever at any Dew Tour event). Let’s also mention that she came in second to South Korean Gaon Choi who earned the top spot. According to Gaon’s bio, she was “practically raised riding a snowboard, and can also throw down on four wheels at skateparks and vert ramps.” All at the spritely age of 14.
Zhou said, "I feel so excited and so thankful to be here. All these great people mixed up all together inspired me to go bigger and have more style.” She also told the Associated Press, “I’m having so much fun learning from everybody! Contests like this make me want to skate and surf and snowboard forever.”
We’re so here for it.
And then…there’s the young at heart. Just cresting the five-decade mark at 52, Mix Master Mike brought the vibes and mixed up classic tunes to a packed crowd on Saturday night. Nestled between competitions, under the bright lights of the Streetstyle course, Mike lit up the stage, entertaining his contemporaries and those born after 2012, the year he was inducted into the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame with the Beastie Boys. (He may or may not have taken a few crowd selfies along the way.)
Known for his love of both DJing and snowboarding, entertaining fans surrounded by snow feels like home for this musical pioneer, named the “the world’s greatest DJ” by USA Today. From the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and 2014 Emmy Awards, Mix Master Mike has turned his tables for the people, from presidents to celebrities to packed crowds in the mountains.
According to an interview with The Denver Post, “I love it. I love the snow. I just love being out there,” he said, “It's always good to come back (to Colorado) and revisit old friends and see whole new generations of kids who aren’t really kids anymore. “ Mike continued, “Yeah, there is always a new society of kids coming up, and so you’ve just got to hammer that generation in the head with some dope new (bleep).”
On the final day of the comp, crowds got a taste of chaos, also known as the Superpipe High Air & Best Trick Jam presented by the U.S. Air Force. Bomb Hole host Chris Grenier described the session as a “complete trainwreck of awesomeness,” and analyst Todd Richards called it “the mullet portion of Dew Tour: we had the business up front, and now we have the party in the back.”
Ayumu Hirano, sending a “wild, loose no-grab air to fakie, rolling down the windows at 22 feet, 8 inches on the edge of disaster to take the prize” according to the Dew Tour website, took home the top prize while battling it out in heavy snow conditions. With cash flowing (judges literally handing out stacks of cash for individual tricks during the contest), the athletes showed up, fired up, snow be damned. Ultimately, Hirano earned the MVP honors of the session. The judges awarded Zhou the “Best Time” honors on Sunday, as she clearly was having the best time of her 11-year old life.
