An Insider's Take on the Inside Passage

Tackling this fabled west coast circuit can be intimidating. but with a well-planned itinerary, sound boat, good crew — and these expert tips — it’s heaven on earth..

The Inside Passage up the West Coast is one of those bucket-list trips for many American and Canadian boaters. At more than 1,000 miles end to end, the network of passages that weave through the islands of the Pacific Northwest to Alaska contains a lifetime of places to explore. The Passage begins to the south at Olympia, Washington, in Puget Sound, then snakes its way north through more than 600 miles of Canada's British Columbia before winding through the southeast Alaska panhandle from Ketchikan, past Juneau, all the way north to Skagway.

Tracy Arm fjord

Tracy Arm fjord, located south of Juneau, offers breathtaking views including waterfalls, sheer rock walls, icebergs, and a variety of wildlife, such as black bears. (Photos: Christine Smith)

The scenery is astonishing. This is a place of stark beauty and amazing contrasts. There are stunning high-sided fjords in the north sections with tidewater glaciers, miles upon miles of conifer-covered shorelines with secluded anchorages that include views of snow-capped mountains, remote fishing villages, and to the south, even a few big cities. There is wildlife everywhere: whales feeding in quiet passages, bears wandering along the beach, bald eagles perched in trees along the shore. Bring a wildlife guide, because the volume and variety of species are plentiful.

Killer whale

Killer whales are a common sight, most often between early May and early June, but may be spotted through September. (Photo: Christine Smith)

Best of all, it's almost entirely in protected waters, so is suitable for boats of any size within reason. The boating season in the region runs from early March through late October, and some boaters even cruise the southern sections in the winter. When it comes to boaters and bucket lists, these are cruising grounds that, once checked off, prompt an immediate urge to return. So, before you head north to Alaska, here are some simple tips that my wife, Christine, and I have developed, after completing this passage from Bellingham, Washington, all the way to southeast Alaska every charter season for several years aboard our 1929 converted 65-foot wood cannery tug.

10 Firsthand Tips To Make Your Own Inside Passage Cruise Safer And More Enjoyable:

1. have a reliable shoreside contact..

Shoreside Contact

A reliable shoreside contact is a must-have for Inside Passage cruisers.

This is hardly a full-time job, but someone to answer your texts or other communications, receive packages and ship them on to you, or occasionally pass on a weather report, is invaluable. Mostly, it's nice to know you have a contact person, and it may only cost you flowers and a bottle of wine.

2. Get a satellite texting device.

There isn't cellphone coverage for much of the Inside Passage, so these little devices allow you to send and receive a short text message from anywhere. We use a Garmin inReach (about $300), but it's also available from SPOT. Not only can you contact people, you can have it track you so others can see where you are and know you're OK. More than once, my sister has checked in on us because we hadn't moved for a day or two. (We were fine.) We now carry two and use the other in our skiff for exploring and shore excursions. In some of the high-sided fjords, VHF is useless, but the inReach comes through.

3. Sign up to be a "Known Shipper" with Alaska Airlines.

Alaska Inner Loop Map

This little detail can save you tons of hassle. Alaska Airlines has a fantastic air-cargo system called Goldstreak that you can use to get parts (or almost anything else) shipped in case of a breakdown. Even if you have to hire a local to do the repair, being able to get the parts can mean the difference between being stuck at a dock for days or continuing on.

Our system is to buy the part/piece/ equipment and have it overnighted to our shoreside person. We've even done this via the inReach. She takes it to the airport, and we get it later the next day. You may never need this, but it only takes a few minutes to sign up , although it takes a while to get approved.

In the southern half of the British Columbia coast, Kenmore Air offers floatplane passenger service to a number of locations. It's also able to transport boat parts, so if you're broken down in that area, the company can help. Because of the international border, there are some simple requirements: It can only transport "emergency boat parts to U.S.-registered vessels in distress" in its northern service areas (Campbell River and the Northern Inside Passage). Make sure your shoreside person can provide Kenmore with a receipt or invoice showing its value, too, because Canadian Customs (CBSA) will require it for all items, new or refurbished.

4. Get a good tide and current guide.

Trio of Guidebooks

The tidal rapids in the southern section of the Inside Passage can cause anxiety among first-time cruisers, but they're surprisingly easy if you show up at the right time, at slack water. And while most electronic navigation programs will have the times of slack and max, the paper guide will confirm it for you, and give you peace of mind. There are lots of choices for a paper guide. We use Ports and Passes even though it's available on our Navionics, OpenCPN, and Coastal Explorer. Once you know the time of slack water, plan so you arrive a little early and you can go right through. If you're going in the direction of the tide, that's the perfect accelerator; use it to your advantage by positioning yourself at the right time.

5. Get the right guidebooks.

People fret a lot about what to buy. There are so many choices of cruising guides. There are numerous guides for sections of the trip, the San Juans, the Broughtons, the Secret Coast, and so on. But the guides that cover the most area with the most information are the "Exploring" books: Exploring the South Coast of B.C. , Exploring the North Coast of B.C., and Exploring Southeast Alaska . They also offer the best picture of cruising in this area. For wildlife guides, you'll want The Sibley Guide to Birds, Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast, and Nature of Southeast Alaska .

6. Don't get too stressed about spares.

Trying to figure out what to bring for spares stresses out a lot of first-time Inside Passage cruisers. Alaska and the B.C. coast are well stocked, and even if you need something and can't get it locally, you should be able to have it air freighted to you. Focus on parts that break or clog or wear out, like rubber impellers, fuel filters, and engine belts. Things you could fix by yourself in a remote wilderness anchorage are useful. A box of oil filters takes up precious space, even if they are cheaper in the lower 48.

Things To Remember If You Go:

  • Bring fishing and/or crabbing gear. It's some of the best salmon, halibut, and Dungeness crab fishing in the world. (You'll want to get your fishing licenses online beforehand. For Alaska waters, go to adfg.alaska.gov and select Fishing>Licenses & Permits. For Canadian waters, go to pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca and select Fisheries>Recreational Fishing>British Columbia Recreational Fishing.)
  • Bring foulies and warm clothes. The weather can be wet, and temperatures get mighty chilly as you approach glaciers.
  • Make a point of visiting the small towns along the way. They are interesting and welcoming. You'll learn a lot about local history and indigenous people, and you'll get a real taste of the rugged folks who choose to live in this remote wilderness.
  • Be aware of the many large cruise ships in the area. Not only are they intimidating, their wakes are large and sometimes bounce off narrow passages, and they can roll your boat for a surprisingly long time. Try to keep items carefully stowed as if you were going to sea so you'll be ready when you encounter them.
  • Don't count on much sailing. Winds are often nonexistent or light from the north, or strong southeasterly with uncomfortable seas.
  • If it's possible, anchor pretty far from shore and bring bug spray. The bugs aren't usually bad, but when they are, the mosquitoes are Alaska-sized.
  • You'll want some bear spray , which is sold all along the route and is very effective for defusing an aggressive bear encounter. It's what the Alaska guides use, plus, it's legal to carry through Canada. (Handguns are not.)
  • Carry a lot of anchor rode and be prepared to anchor in a lot of really deep places. A reel of small line is useful for adding a stern tie to a tree on the beach, a common anchoring practice in deep harbors. Some of the most beautiful anchorages are 50- to 100-feet deep.
  • You'll encounter many whales. The laws say to not bring your boat within 100 yards (100 meters in Canada) and more in some areas, and you'll get a much longer show if you watch from a distance and don't disturb the animals.

— Charles Fort

7. Carry a good emergency kit for boat repairs.

Most people know about softwood plugs or TruPlug that you can use to stop a leak in an emergency. But my kit contains a few other items that have been helpful at times. Dr. Shrink Tape is amazing stuff that sticks to absolutely everything and can make a quick patch of a crack in your topsides or a leaky skylight or hatch. It may not be pretty, but it will allow you to continue cruising in comfort. A product called Through the Roof is a great sealant that works even in the rain (we've even used it underwater). A can of spray foam and a couple tubes of 3M 5200 (get the toothpaste- tube style) are also worth carrying. Also, add some super glue to the list.

8. Check on your insurance.

Most boat insurance policies have limits for where you can take your boat and still be insured. Insurance through BoatUS covers people with a U.S. address while they're cruising in Alaska, and you can get a seasonal extension for Canada. You typically need to ask for an extension, and sometimes there's an additional charge. If it's based on a latitude and you plan to cruise the entire Inside Passage, make sure you choose 59° 27.0N (Skagway, Alaska). Most other companies offer similar coverage. Towing is usually included, even in Canada. But a quick email to your company would confirm that you're covered for the area you want to cruise.

9. Take the boat you've got.

No matter what size or age of vessel, you're still going to watch the weather and navigate based on your craft. Also, a boat you're familiar with is going to be less stressful to cruise in than a new-to-you boat. Your voyage should be about exploring, seeing the scenery, and learning about wildlife along the way. If you don't have a boat, there are many options like bareboat chartering with a cruising in company flotilla offered by Northwest Explorations and others. There are also several good options for smaller chartering opportunities on crewed charter boats.

10. Take enough time to do it right.

There's nothing worse than having to rush home without seeing as much as you'd hoped, or skipping beautiful spots because of time constraints. Being in a rush is also a good way to force you to make bad weather decisions. Six weeks is the very absolute minimum, and 12 to 18 weeks would really allow you to immerse yourselves. If you have other summer commitments, you can always leave your boat and fly out, returning when your outside commitments are done. Take as long as you possibly can. Trust me on this. Take your boat and go.

Alaska Inside Passage Cruises

Alaska’s Inside Passage is nothing short of breathtaking. Encompassed by tranquil waters, one moment you can be sailing a wide bay of barrier islands and the next you’re cruising through a narrow waterway flanked by towering forested walls. That’s the splendid spectacle of these serene landscapes — the scenery is constantly changing, from picturesque shores to friendly coastal towns.

What is the Inside Passage?

Stretching hundreds of miles from Puget Sound, Washington, through the British Columbia coast and into the Gulf of Alaska, the Inside Passage includes more than 1,000 islands, seemingly endless shoreline and thousands of idyllic coves and bays. Sailing with Princess, you’ll marvel at the breathtaking scenery and encounter ports of call like Gold Rush-era Skagway, Salmon Capital of the World Ketchikan, the capital city of Juneau and British-flavored Victoria.

Visit a Native village, learn about the triumphs and tragedies of Alaska’s Gold Rush heyday or go dog sledding with a real musher. Touring the Inside Passage on an Alaska cruise is your gateway to the fascinating and colorful culture, history and sights of the Great Land.

History of the Inside Passage

During a two-year expedition through uncharted territory, Captain George Vancouver sailed into the still waters of what came to be known as the Inside Passage . Passing by luminous glaciers artfully carved by Mother Nature’s beaming summers and numbing winters, Captain Vancouver and his team charted over 1,000 miles from 1792 to 1794. From the towering spruce trees lining the borders of Ketchikan to the majestic mountains cradling the heart of Skagway, the mariners documented every inch of this winter wonderland — inviting others to set sail in their same path and revel in the magic for themselves.

In 1881, the first cruise drifted into the still waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage — but, these seafarers did not experience the wonder of modern-day cruises. In the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, these passengers were making history, not reliving it. Since then, journeys through these breathtaking lands have become more exhilarating. In Juneau, venture underground into historical gold mines and see for yourself just how treasure was extracted from rugged walls. Or, take a scenic railway tour up snow-capped mountains and through lush landscapes, retracing the footsteps of early explorers in Skagway.

History awaits you in the enchanting enclaves of the Inside Passage. Cruise past archaic, granite glaciers and step into protected lands. With exclusive access to some of the most famous glaciers — including Glacier Bay National Park — Princess offers a close-up, undisturbed view to spectacular scenery and adored wildlife. Sail into sheer serenity amidst the Inside Passage on an Alaska cruise from Princess.

How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap

When I begun planning my Western Canada holiday, I made a list of the things I most wanted to see and do. Of course visiting The Rockies, Vancouver Island and Vancouver were all on that list, but the thing I wanted to do most was cruise the Inside Passage.

I did my research and found that the cruises were expensive. Just seven days cruising return to Vancouver up the Inside Passage to Alaska was going to cost me at least a few thousand dollars. This made me worry that I wouldn’t be able to see this place that I’ve been dreaming of visiting for so long. At least not on this trip anyway.

So I dug a little deeper because I thought to myself, there really had to be a cheaper way to cruise the Inside Passage. Backpackers and budget travellers wouldn’t be parting with thousands of dollars just for a short cruise like that, so I knew there had to be a way.

Finally after hours and hours of research I found it! I found a way to cruise the Inside Passage for cheap and without having to spend days on a cruise. And I want to share this experience with you, so you too can save thousands of dollars but still have the cruise of a lifetime through some of the most scenic waters in the world.

BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise

BC Ferries is the biggest ferry company in the Western Canada state of British Columbia. They run passenger and vehicle ferries between the mainland (Vancouver area) to Vancouver Island and around parts of the main island and out to some of the smaller islands too. Most people who have visited or researched this part of Canada would have heard of these ferries.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

But the one ferry that you might not know about is the Inside Passage Day Cruise. Running from mid June to mid September each year, this 16 hour cruise travels between Port Hardy, at the northern tip of Vancouver Island, to Prince Rupert, in the northern reaches of the Canadian coast just 50 km (as the crow flies) south of the Alaskan border.

The Inside Passage Day Cruise not only accommodates foot passengers, but like most other BC Ferries, you can take your vehicle on-board as well. This means cars, motorbikes and motorhomes. They even accommodate commercial vehicles!

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

Cruises leave at 7:30am and arrive into port at 11.30pm. During the height of the summer months, most of the cruising time is in daylight, allowing you to see as much of the Inside Passage as possible. Sailings earlier and later in the season will travel a short time in the dark, but this allows for some pretty spectacular sunset and sunrise viewing from on-board the cruise.

While all of this is excellent, what you really want to know is the price! Now remember that the seven days cruises I talked about earlier cost at least a few thousand dollars.

As a foot passenger on a BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise, you’ll be paying just $195.00CAD per person. If you have a car, you’ll pay just $640.00CAD for one vehicle with one passenger (less for motorbikes). This is a saving of thousands of dollars and because it is a one day sail, you’ll be saving yourself time to see more of this beautiful country.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

For my cruise, I sailed from Port Hardy north to Price Rupert on the last sailing of the season in September. Here is a little about what you can expect on-board the cruise and the scenery you’ll see along the way.

On-board the Vessel

The Northern Expedition is one of the biggest vessels in the BC Ferries fleet. It is over 150 metres long, holds 638 passengers and crew, can have up to 115 vehicles on-board and travels at a maximum speed of 20.5 knots.

Just like any large ferry or cruise, there are plenty of amenities on-board to keep you comfortable for the entire journey.

A standard foot passenger ticket gets you access to everything on the cruise except for the Aurora Lounge and the Staterooms, where extra fees apply. I opted for the standard ticket as I figured I’d be spending most of my time out on the deck enjoying the view (and I was right!).

Inside seating on the BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

Inside there are lots of comfortable seats that either face directly out the windows or angled towards the windows to take in the view. The seats also recline a bit too, making it super comfy for relaxing and taking a little nap from time to time.

Inside seating on the BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

Where you will spend most of your time (regardless of the weather in my case) is out on the deck. Yes it was raining and cold for a lot of my journey but with incredible views I just chose to rug up in my waterproof gear and make the most of it.

Seating on the deck of the BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

There is ample covered and un-covered seating on deck with the best views to be had from the back of the boat. I also found it to be more protected from the wind at the back.

Seating on the deck of the BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

On-board there are two food choices.

The Canoe Cafe

This casual dining area is similar to a cafeteria where you serve yourself and it is open for the entire duration of the cruise. There are lots of comfortable seats, some by the window, and tables with wooden edges on them for when it gets a little rocky.

At the Canoe Cafe you’ll find self-serve hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, salads, cakes and other snack foods. There is also a hot food bar where you can get things like eggs and bacon for breakfast and burgers, fish and chips and soup from midday into the evening.

I enjoyed a cream cheese bagel for breakfast, a beef burger for lunch and a chicken stir fry for dinner. All were nice and exactly what you would expect from cafeteria dining as well as being reasonably priced.

The Canoe Cafe on BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

I really enjoyed the big range of herbal teas they had available too. After spending time on deck in the cold taking in the view, a hot tea was exactly what I needed to warm up!

Vista Restaurant

The second dining option is the Vista Restaurant. This is a buffet restaurant open for lunch and dinner hours.

I unfortunately didn’t get the opportunity to eat at Vista because by the time I arrived at the dining room for dinner, it was booked out for the rest of serving time. I highly recommend you reserve a table when you board to avoid missing out.

Entertainment

If sitting back and enjoying the spectacular scenery isn’t enough for you then there are other things you can enjoy on the cruise as well.

Head to the Raven Lounge to enjoy a movie. There were two movie’s played on my sailing and they show movies that will entertain people of all ages.

If you are travelling with kids, then they will definitely want to check out the Kids Zone. There you will find nautical themed play equipment and wall murals to keep the kids entertained. Plus comfy seats so mum and dad can sit back and enjoy the view while keeping an eye on the little ones.

What You Will See on the Inside Passage

While the cruise ship itself is great, what you really need to know about is what you’ll see on this 16 hour journey. To sum it up, the journey is nothing short of spectacular!

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

The landscape starts out pretty flat but as the boat maneuvers itself through the passage ways of islands on the left and mainland and islands on the right, the landscape changes. By the halfway point of the cruise there are towering mountains surrounding the passageways with spectacular cascading waterfalls and thick green rainforest clinging to the sides.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

There are many points of interest throughout the cruise and the Captain makes a point of announcing each one as you go by. Make sure you pick up the Points of Interest brochure from the Pursers office when you board. It tells you more about the things the Captain announces along the journey.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

I had two favourite spots along the cruise. The first was the one and only stop at Bella Bella. This remote fishing and logging community is home to the largest First Nations community on the west coast of Canada. I was fascinated by the massive ferry maneuvering its way into place at the tiny dock and then watching the passengers and commercial vehicles disembark.

Bella Bella wharf - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

Off to the left of the dock, you can straight away see why it is a popular fishing spot. While on deck I saw what must have been hundreds of fish jumping out of the water.

My other favourite spot was the half way point of the cruise, Boat Bluff. This tiny lighthouse is visible for 32 km and is located on the southern end of Sarah Island, marking the entry of the Tolmie Channel.

Boat Bluff on the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

As we cruised past this spot, the sun made a rare appearance and shone down on the lighthouse. At the same time a pod of porpoise rode a small wave right in front. It was a pretty special moment of the cruise.

The biggest highlight however, was the opportunity to see so many whales. When I say so many, I’d say it was in the dozens for my cruise.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

The Captain did his best to announce when there was a whale spotting, but when the boat is travelling at 20 knots in one direction and the whales are swimming in the other direction they disappear pretty quickly. If you want to see whales, the biggest tip I can give you, is to spend as much time out on deck as you can handle.

Cruising the Inside Passage - How to Cruise the Inside Passage for Cheap - The Trusted Traveller

I saw humpback whales fully breaching out of the water, diving in and out, looking like they were having a blast. It was really something special and a highlight, not just of my Inside Passage Cruise, but of my whole month in Western Canada.

Book Your Own Inside Passage Cruise

If an Inside Passage cruise has been something you’ve always wanted to do but just haven’t been able to justify the cost, then I urge you to check out the BC Ferries Inside Passage Day Cruise . This link will tell you everything you need to know about dates, times, prices and added extras.

Here are a few things I think you should know about:

  • If you are travelling as a foot passenger, your luggage is checked just like on a plane. Make sure you pack a day bag with everything you will need for the 16 hour journey as you won’t have access to your bags again until the ferry docks.
  • Access to your vehicle is restricted to certain times during the cruise. Ensure you have everything you need packed into a day bag and bring it with you when you leave you vehicle after boarding.
  • While the majority of the cruise is through calm passageways, there are a few parts of the cruise where it can get a little rocky. If you have experienced sea sickness in the past, I would recommend bringing along something to combat this.
  • There are lots of spectacular scenery during the cruise and some entertainment to keep you occupied, however, if you are the type to get bored easily, I would recommend bringing some reading material or something else to keep yourself busy. 16 hours (plus pre-boarding time) is a long time to be confined to a ferry.
  • Bring layers of warm clothing. Even in the height of summer, the weather along the Inside Passage can be unpredictable and change multiple times during your cruise. A weather proof jacket at a minimum is recommended.

What a lovely post. As a person who still calls BC home (even though I haven’t lived there for 20 years) seeing these gorgeous pictures makes me miss it so much. I have never been on the Inside Passage ferry – seems I am never home at the right time – but it is on my list of to do very very soon!

Thanks Jane. I highly recommend doing this trip next time you are in BC for the summer. It is spectacular and travelling so slowly really is a special way to see something.

It looks amazing Jen. I was meant to do this myself a couple of years ago but my plans ended up falling through. I have been on a lot of ferries between Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, as well as the ferry between Juneau and Sitka in Alaska, and they were all stunning – it is such a beautiful part of the world. I definitely want to do the Inside Passage sometime in the next couple of years for sure!

It was amazing and you should definitely try to fit it into your travels. I’m going to explore more of the Gulf Islands and get up to Alaska next time i’m over there. I’ve fallen so in love with Canada!

Fantastic! I´ve also cruised the inside passage and was fascinated by its incredible beauty, not to mention the cruise experience. It´s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks Mark. So good to hear you enjoyed your cruise on the Inside Passage too. It is definitely one of those once in a lifetime experiences.

Thank you for the wonderful post! I took the same Inside Passage Cruise from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. Totally awesome! I was joining a tour boat in Great Bear Rainforest but no way I would be able to afford a cruise to Alaska and this was almost the same. I remember the Captain announcing the places which I tried to take notes of, sadly not done well. Don’t remember a copy of highlights from Pursers Office, that would have helped. I have some amazing photos and some wondered what I would do for 15 hrs…..on deck on one side or another. Thank you for bringing back beautiful memories of my trip of a lifetime!

Thanks Brenda. So glad I could bring back those memories for you.

Thank you for this really helpful post as I too am looking for a short inside passage cruise. One thing I don’t understand is how you get back from Prince Rupert? Is it another 16 hrs back to port Hardy the next day?

Hi Carolyn, Yes you can do the cruise back or fly back. However what I did was then take the train from Prince Rupert to the Rockies. It was amazing! Cheers Jen

I came to Canada from India for a holiday in 1989 and did the inside passage with my wife and five year old daughter Thirty Dollars each.We still have Photos Film and fresh memories of each and every moment ,we travelled on the bus to Port Hardy and stayed there the night to catch the 7.30am departure.to Prince Rupert to visit relatives working in the salmon cannery.they kept us for two weeks. So the service which we got then is still the same. So for those of u who are thinking of going pleas don’t think just go.go go.lifes too short. Give ur kids a surprise gift this is more appreciated than any presents.

So excited. Doing this trip in July 2019. Did the big cruise ship but wanted to do something a little more than be on a massive cruise ship with a couple of thousand people!

Great choice Sharon! You will love it.

Is it possible to travel on this ferry from Prince Rupert, and how far north does it travel. Can you hop on and off as it travels north.

Thinking of travelling to Canada. However, could you advise if April is a good choice of month to do so. Thank you.

I’ve been looking for a cheap way to see the inside passage, so this sounds perfect! Do you see all of the inside passage, that you would see on a big cruise, on this ferry day cruise? And do you see any glaciers?

I would like to do the day cruise from Port-Albert and come back on the next day. Can we sleep on the ferry ?

As far as I know there isn’t an overnight ferry you can take but they do have rooms you can book on the ferry.

Scenic Sailing: The Inside Passage

Stretching some 500 miles along the Alaska Panhandle, the Inside Passage is a pristine wilderness of fjord-like channels. It winds its way through a vast maze of islands laden with emerald-green forests and strewn with glistening glaciers. Nature is at her most magnificent here, tranquil and hushed. Unspoiled waterways weave their way past tiny coastal villages and a breathtaking array of snowcapped mountains and pine-covered hills. Sea lions and otters reside in these waters, and moose and brown bears are often spotted as they wade along the coast.

Planning a DIY Cruise Through the Inside Passage

L ast year, a record 1.65 million people visited Alaska by cruise, 23% more than in 2019, the prior landmark year , with popular cruise lines also reporting double-digit growth. The vast majority traveled via the Inside Passage, a 500-mile route departing in Seattle or Vancouver and ending in Juneau, and one of the few waterways where large cruise ships sail in proximity to such towering mountains and abundant wildlife.

A cruise through the quintessential Inside Passage whisks you through placid waters packed with whales. See temperate rainforests filled with rare animals, snow-capped mountains, and fjords spiking thousands of feet out of the sea. Visit remote fishing villages and indigenous communities only accessible by sea or air. All set against the backdrop of luxury accommodations, fine dining, and entertainment.

The commercial $1.87 billion Alaska Cruise industry is ubiquitous in Alaska, with 60% of travelers arriving by boat. But a cruise liner teeming with tourists and cookie-cutter excursions isn't the only way to experience this rugged North American Frontier. Travelers with a DIY spirit and taste for adventure can create their own Inside Passage itinerary based on local ferry services.

Taking a Ferry Through the Inside Passage

The ferry system began in the early 1960s as a way for Canada and the United States to connect communities along their respective shores of the Inside Passage. The Canadian government created the BC Ferry system. The Alaska State government created the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Today, people use it to travel to the most far-flung destinations of the Inside Passage. Ships in both countries offer rooms with private bathrooms. Passengers can choose comfortable indoor and outdoor seating with the same views as cruise ships. Drivers and RVers can bring their vehicles, and most pets are welcome. Some Inside Passage ferries hold as many as 2,000 people and even have a movie theater.

Trips vary in length. Expect to spend one to three nights aboard, depending on the embarkation and final destination. Unlike a cruise, passengers can only disembark at the Port on their ticket. However, the captain still announces major points of attraction and animal sightings.

Departures are limited, often once a week, and tickets sell out, especially for vehicles, so travelers should book online in advance. Also, Wi-Fi is extremely limited, so plan for digital austerity.

The Canadian and U.S. systems connect in Prince Rupert, British Columbia . However, the route will not run in 2024 , and there is no timeline for reopening. The Alaska Marine Highway website cites "international service regulations and crewing shortages." The issue is the aging Alaska fleet, which doesn’t meet the Canadian government’s standards for porting at Prince Rupert.

Where Can You Take the Inside Passage Ferry?

Both the Canadian and U.S. ferries allow you to bask in the scenery and travel beyond a typical cruise excursion.

The Canadian portion of the Inside Passage opens the door to some of the most remote places in British Colombia. The journey begins at Bear Cove, a port in Port Hardy on North Vancouver Island . Most people arrive by ferry from Vancouver and enjoy a scenic road trip up the coast along Highway 19. From indigenous points of interest and quirky museums to wildlife viewing and hiking, the drive to the ferry is an experience in itself.

From Bear Cove, it's a 16-hour, one-night trip through the Inside Passage to Prince Rupert, an old salmon canning town located on the far northern edge of British Colombia. It’s a great place to stroll quaint village streets or set up other journeys. You can hike, kayak, or explore Pike Island, an archeological tour of pre-historic settlements.

Potential stops along the way to Prince Rupert are the small indigenous communities of Bella Bella or Klemtu in the Great Bear Rainforest. Both are gateways to paddling, diving, wildlife viewing, and other backwoods experiences. Klemtu is the starting point for sea-faring adventures to Haida Gwaii, a remote archipelago, and Bella Coola, a village at the foot of the inland mountains.

The Alaska Marine Highway covers more territory. Its Inside Passage route runs three nights and two days from Bellingham, in Washington State, to Juneau, the state capital.

From Juneau, the ferry system has day boats to several smaller, interesting outposts. In Sitka, you can visit homesteaders and bear rescues while learning about its Russian and indigenous history. Haines, referred to as the Adventure Capital of Alaska, is home to over 400 bald eagles and a mountainous backcountry where hiking, kayaking, and fishing are a way of life. An hour from Haines is Skagway and the start of the beloved 8-hour, 25-mile White Pass Scenic Railroad.

Gustavo, a 4-6 hour ferry or 30-minute seaplane flight from Juneau, is the most popular connection from Juneau, as the closest town with accommodations to Glacier Bay National Park. From Gustavo, travelers can work with the National Park Service or other outfitters to plan a visit.

Although it's grown in popularity in recent years , a lot of commercial cruises do not offer trips to Glacier Bay. The park only permits two commercial ships daily. Princess Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Carnival, Seabourne Cruise, Viking Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Cruises all have contracts with the park.

Along the way to Juneau, the ferry stops at many of the same ports as the quintessential Inside Passage Cruise. In Ketchikan, just 38 hours from Bellingham, you can hike the temperate rainforests or hop in a low-flying bush plane over the 3,000-foot walls of the Misty Fjords National Monument.

Six hours from Ketchikan, near Wrangell, explorers can check out the ancient carvings in Petroglyph Bear State Historic Site or take a jet boat up the Stikine River into the dramatic snowy peaks ahead. A stop in Petersburg is also the start of an epic 2-day kayaking trip to the LeConte glacier, 20 miles away.

Many commercial cruises offer excursions into the wilderness of British Colombia and Alaska. The ferry offers travelers more control and a starting point to explore further.

Cost vs. Value

It can be challenging to compare the cost of a ferry and a cruise because many of the costs of cruising are not apparent in the initial offer. Cabins on large commercial ships may start at $100 per night. But they typically don't include food, alcohol, or excursions, which can cost hundreds of dollars per person daily. Most travelers should expect to budget between $3,000 and $5,000 per person for an average 7-night Alaska Cruise.

The ferry, on the other hand, is easier to calculate, though not exactly cheap. The cost changes per port, size of vehicle, and cabin selection. For example, it's about $600 for one person and a cabin from Bellingham to Juneau, but an additional $1,116 is needed to bring your SUV.

Passengers can bring their own food or eat out of the cafeteria, which costs between $10 and $25 per meal. Once on shore, consider accommodations, guides, and meals.

An Inside Passage Ferry Puts More Adventure at Your Fingertips

The draw, then, isn't massive savings, though the ferry is usually less expensive. It's more about connecting with real backcountry. Travel closer to the people and spend more time enjoying its bounties — at least more authentically than a port of call on a cruise will allow.

Inside Passage Cruises

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Cruises from Vancouver depart from spring through fall. Located on the southwestern coast of British Columbia, Vancouver is Canada's third most populous city. The bustling metropolis is known for its cultural diversity, which is on display in areas like Chinatown, brimming with authentic eateries and apothecaries. Gastown, Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, exudes historic charm thanks to cobblestone streets and Victorian architecture harmoniously interspersed with trendy boutiques and galleries. Outdoor activities abound in the urban Stanley Park, home to gardens, beaches, trails, totem poles and the seawall amid a lush forested setting totaling about 1,000 acres. The city is a jumping-off point for whale-watching tours, which reward keen eyes with glimpses of orcas and humpback whales as well as pelicans, puffins and bald eagles. A short hop northward across the harbor into North Vancouver is Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, where seven bridges and a cliff walk delight thrill-seekers.

So much for thinking they had crossed their final hurdle.

Guests onboard the Royal Caribbean cruise line were told their trip was canceled and were being sent home despite already being aboard the ship.

Royal Caribbean International notified guests onboard Radiance of the Seas that the ship would not continue on an already-abbreviated Alaskan cruise. The trip was canceled, and guests had to disembark, CruiseHive.com reported.

The ship was set to leave from Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 26, but an earlier adjustment due to technical difficulties allowed guests to board on embarkation day while the ship was to spend two days in port undergoing repairs.

The revised plan features a Sunday departure and an adjusted route, with calls to Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan and scenic cruising in the famed Inside Passage before returning on May 3, which was the original completion date.

But it was later announced that the trip was being canceled due to repairs for a technical issue. Guests had to leave the ship by 4 p.m. Sunday.

“As you are aware, our teams have been vigorously working to have Radiance of the Seas prepared to set sail on our shortened April 26th sailing,” the letter given to passengers in their staterooms read, the unofficial cruise site RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com reported.

“Despite our best efforts, circumstances beyond our control have delayed our sailing further. As a result, we’ll regrettably have to cancel our April 26th, 2024, cruise,” the letter concluded.

Guests will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare and a 100% future cruise credit that may be applied to any future Royal Caribbean sailing. Internet service aboard the ship was also open free of charge to allow for easier travel planning and offered a free open bar until debarkation.

The ship began to develop propulsion difficulties last week during a repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver, causing multiple stops to be scrapped due to a slower speed.
