This Arctic train trip could be the best way to see the aurora

The new Northern Lights rail adventure takes in Scandinavia’s most spectacular routes

Ed Cunningham

Look, we know it’s only just been summer, but now’s also the perfect time to start thinking about a winter getaway. Few things will be on quite so many frosty bucket lists as having the chance to see the aurora borealis: the dazzling polar light show known as the Northern Lights. And now, excitingly, there’s a super-luxurious way to see it: by train.

A new package by travel company Vacations By Rail is offering an 11-day trip on some of Scandinavia’s most stunning train lines, many of which are famed for their opportunities for viewing the aurora borealis.

Here’s an outline of the trip. You’ll start in the Norwegian capital of Oslo before going up to Trondheim, from where you’ll catch the Nordland Express: a train that pitches its way north for 452 miles all the way to the Arctic Circle and the town of Bodø.

You’ll then take a ferry up to the Lofoten Islands, which are renowned for being among the best viewing sites for the Northern Lights in the entire world, before coming back to the Norwegian mainland and taking the Ofoten Railway over the border to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

There’s never a dead certainty that you’ll see the Northern Lights, which are caused by particles from the sun colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere. However, given the amount of time you’ll spend on Vacations By Rail’s tour in prime borealis-spotting country, you’re giving yourself as good chances as you can really get.

Also included in the trip are scenic drives around the Loftens, tours of magnificent fjords, a husky-pulled sled ride and a night in Kiruna’s famous Ice Hotel . In other words, even if it’s cloudy the whole time, this is a pretty unmissable tour.

Vacations By Rail’s next load of aurora-spotting trips will start in January 2023 and prices start from $3,295 (£2,864) per person, though you can get $350 (£304) off if you book before September 9. Find out more  here – and get planning a borealis bonanza.

Want to plan your own trip? These are the best places around the world to see the aurora .

Plus:  this dreamy new night train will go from Amsterdam all the way to the Austrian Alps .

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Your northern lights trip questions, answered

Is it guaranteed i will see the northern lights during my trip.

While there certainly are things you can do to increase your chances of seeing the northern lights (see above), there are no guarantees that travelers will see them . However, the chances increase with an organized adventure alongside an experienced guide . Anything from sun activity to cloudy weather can make the difference between seeing the aurora borealis and not! The best option is to choose a destination you’d be happy with regardless of whether you see the northern lights.

What other activities are offered during a northern lights trip?

Depending on the adventure you choose, travelers can often enjoy many other activities while hunting for northern lights! The adventurous can enjoy dogsledding, skiing, snow-shoeing, and snowmobiling , while those looking for a slower pace will love the many museums and cultural offerings at many northern lights destinations. Of course, the gorgeous nature is an attraction in itself!

Can you see the northern lights when there is a full moon?

A popular misconception about viewing the northern lights is that a full moon negatively impacts visibility. Thankfully, that is simply not true! The Northern Lights can and do appear on nights with full moons , and many photographers appreciate the moon’s presence in their shots.

How long do the northern lights last?

As with many questions about the northern lights, the answer to this is: it depends.  On active nights, the aurora borealis can be seen all night long. However, at other times the spectacle only lasts for a few minutes . The weather patterns that cause the lights are not always easily tracked, and therefore it’s not possible to know exactly how long each display will last. But specified apps will provide help in finding out where the activity is high.

Do I need travel insurance for a northern lights trip?

Travel insurance is mandatory for most of the organized adventures on TourRadar and must be purchased before you start your travels. It covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost or stolen baggage, and more. You can simply  add travel insurance with Cover Genius directly to your TourRadar booking.

How do I book a northern lights tour on TourRadar?

Find your next northern lights tour package by perusing our tours by choosing your dates and destination, and use our handy filters such as must-see city or budget, and you’ll find the one calling your name. Then you simply fill out your details to secure your organized adventure. If you have any questions along the way, our Travel Experts are standing by 24/7!

What should you wear on a northern lights tour?

When embarking on a Northern Lights tour, dressing appropriately is crucial to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Layering with a waterproof and windproof insulated jacket is key. Gloves, a scarf and a warm head covering are also important to avoid getting chilled. Thermal socks and boots will keep your feet warm in the snow. After all, remember, it's not unusual for you to spend a lot of time outside.

Are there Northern Lights tours for seniors?

There are no specific Northern Lights tours for seniors, however, all of our organized adventures are age-graded so you can easily find out if the tour is suitable for you. An additional helpful note to the tour descriptions is our physical rating filter function. This helps you assess how active the Northern Lights trip will be.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS / AURORA BOREALIS

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that illuminate the night sky in many possible color combinations. Many visitors come to Alaska with the desire to see the lights. They are called Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Lights or Aurora Australis in the Southern Hemisphere.

WHY CAN THE NORTHERN LIGHTS BE SEEN SO WELL IN ALASKA ?

The Aurora Borealis can be seen in countries close to the Arctic Circle. The further north, the better the chances of a sighting of these wonders of nature. They are most commonly seen in Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Greenland and Lapland. The southern lights can be seen in Tasmania, Antarctica and Patagonia.

Alaska is definitely the perfect place to see them, as there are spectacular landscapes like the arctic tundra, mountain ranges, natural hot springs or picturesque fjords. Alaska's strength lies in its small population, which means that there is nature everywhere and very few artificial light sources. In addition, the city of Fairbanks is the ideal base to search for the best viewing location. It is essential to get away from the street lights to better see the colorful lights.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ALASKA ?

The best time to see Northern Lights in Alaska during the year is between September to April. They occur all year round, but winter is definitely the best time to see them due to less light pollution. In fact, it doesn't really get dark in Alaska during the summer. Sometimes the sun doesn't even set, which makes sighting the auroras impossible. Nevertheless, the midnight sundown is an equally beautiful phenomenon that can be seen from the end of May to the end of July, most strongly around June 21. In contrast, it is almost always dark in winter, as we only have a few hours of daylight, especially in December and January. The chances of seeing Northern Lights are very high during this time.

10 Awe-Inspiring Northern Lights CANADA Tours You Can Book Now

northern lights canada tours

Planning an aurora-hunting trip to Canada in 2024-2025? Make your trip a success with one of these inspiring Northern Lights Canada tours, plus tips for what months, locations and tour features you should focus on to maximize your changes of seeing the lights.

Canada offers some of the most awe-inspiring northern light vacation tours available in the world. Thanks to its large landmass, situated well within the auroral oval, there are countless vantage points from which to view the elusive lights. Some of the best destinations within Canada include Yellowknife, Churchill, as well as Whitehorse.

In this article, we’ll help you select a northern lights tour in Canada for your needs and budget, with our tour recommendations and tips for what to look for in a well-organized aurora tour.

Considerations for Booking a Northern Lights Tour in Canada

Before you begin your Northern Lights tour in Canada, there are several factors that you must take into consideration when booking a tour package. It is important to remember that the wilderness in Canada is very expansive, and while there are countless destinations within the country to visit, only a few offer the best vantage points imaginable.

Book Early for Northern Lights Canada Tours

Always remember that when you are planning your Canada Northern Lights tour, you need to book well in advance. Most of these tours run during the peak viewing season, which spans from the end of August until the beginning of April. Although it is possible to view the aurora borealis later in the year, due to longer summer days, it can be much more difficult.

You also need to pay close attention to the destination, because locations like Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Churchill often see the largest influx of tourists during the peak season. If you are planning to visit some of the top destinations within the country, then make sure that you book in advance to ensure that you have available accommodations and excursions.

Choose the Right Timing

Best months & season for northern lights.

The best time to view the northern lights is during the winter months, at the peak of the solar cycle. Since light pollution plays an important role in determining how well you can view the elusive lights, choosing to visit Canada during the winter months increases your odds of capturing a glimpse of the ghostly lights as they dance through the night sky.

During the peak winter months, there are only a few hours of sunlight, to obstruct the viewing experience, which is why they are the most popular months of the year to visit Canada.

While the Aurora tour season runs from Late August to Early April, for the best chances of seeing the northern lights in Canada, aim for Late September to Early March .

Best Years for Northern Lights (Solar Cycle Timing)

At the same time, choosing to hunt for the elusive lights when the sun cycle is at its peak, also increases your chances of capturing a glimpse of the auroras. The sun follows a natural 11-year cycle, and during the highest point of solar activity, the amount of solar radiation being ejected by the sun towards the earth is increased exponentially. The lights are a creation of the charged particles from the sun, passing over the earth’s magnetosphere. We have recently entered a solar cycle peak, so for 2024-2025, it’s accurate to say there is no better time than now for a northern lights Canada tour.

Check out our articles on choosing the best time to see Northern Lights in Canada and the best years for seeing Northern Lights for more timing tips.

whitehorse yukon northern lights tour in canada

Best Locations for Northern Lights Canada Tours

As always, the most important factor when it comes to viewing the northern lights in Canada is location, location, location. You want to make sure that you choose a destination that is well within the auroral oval. The closer you can get to the magnetic North Pole, the greater the chances of capturing a glimpse of the auroras. Making sure to select a destination that gives you an unobstructed view of the northern horizon, also improves your chances of viewing them.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Many aurora hunters have dubbed Yellowknife as the Aurora Capital of America. Due to its location well within the auroral oval, and consistently clear skies, the chances of capturing a glimpse of the northern lights in Yellowknife is greatly improved. This is why countless tour operators offer annual getaways to locations in and around Yellowknife.

Churchill, Manitoba

You will find the city of Churchill located along the shores of Hudson Bay. Due to the wide-open expanses of the Bay, you are provided with a clear vantage point to the north. Not only will you be able to hunt for the northern lights in Churchill, but you may also encounter polar bears, beluga whales, and many other Arctic wildlife.

Whitehorse, Yukon

Another popular destination is located within the rugged Yukon wilderness. Whitehorse is known as the gateway to the Yukon, and offers aurora hunters the perfect staging point for an amazing experience. From Whitehorse, you will be able to head out into the Canadian wilderness by dogsled, or even go on a fishing expedition. There is so much to see and do when you visit Whitehorse in the Yukon.

Embrace the Unpredictability of Nature

Remember, the ability to view the northern lights is a purely subject to the unpredictability of nature. It is common for last-minute weather conditions to change, affecting your ability to view of the elusive lights. As a result, it is important to be as flexible as possible, and be prepared to make changes to your itinerary as the local weather forecast and aurora alerts change throughout the day. Set aside multiple nights specifically for aurora hunting, in order to maximize your chances of viewing the natural phenomenon.

This brings our article on northern lights Canada tours to a close. While a tour is not necessary for spotting the lights, there are many benefits to booking into a tour rather than going it alone. These reasons include a professionally organized tour route and timing with expert aurora borealis guides, who will do whatever they can to help you see the lights, as well as the obvious conveniences of having all your accommodation and meals laid out for you. For this service, they do come with a price tag.

If you’re looking for cheaper ways to see the aurora borealis, and you have a bit of a wild streak, an adventurous alternative is going on a northern lights camping adventure which we discuss in detail in that article, including specific camp spots to check out throughout North America. Another cheaper alternative is to book into a hotel in Canada renowned for its aurora borealis services plus a short one-night tour (or two) to take you out into the wilderness for some aurora-spotting.

Amtrak's Newest Route Might Be Its Most Popular Ever

  • Amtrak's Borealis line is a hit, offering a speedy, direct route between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul with booming ridership.
  • Borealis presents an easy and affordable way to travel, catering to commuters, students, and weekend explorers looking for unique stops.
  • State-supported lines like Borealis show the public's desire for more public transportation, promising convenience and environmental benefits.

If you find yourself interested in taking the train, you're not alone. Train travel is on the rise in America thanks to the increasing network of routes available for people to take. Amtrak is one of the main railroads servicing the country, offering seemingly endless routes to choose from: You can travel across the country , take a leisurely ride with breathtaking views , or utilize shorter routes as a way to get to work. Whether you're looking for an environmentally friendly and convenient way to travel or a last-minute vacation idea , Amtrak has a train line to serve you.

One Amtrak train in particular has been getting a lot of attention. The Borealis line started servicing passengers in May 2024 to connect Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul, and it's been a roaring success. If you haven't heard about the Borealis line, you're missing out on a delightful and affordable way to travel in the Midwest.

The increased train service between these two cities makes it easier than ever to travel between them. For commuters, travelers, students, and more, this is very exciting news. There are lots of reasons to love Amtrak's newest route, and passengers are lining up.

7 Longest Amtrak Routes For Slow Travel This Summer

Embark on leisurely journeys this summer with Amtrak's longest routes! Discover stunning scenery and charming towns at a slower pace.

The Borealis Line's Popularity Bodes Well For Train Travel In America

All eyes are on this new train line connecting chicago to minneapolis-st. paul, with booming ridership in the first month of service.

Amtrak's newest train line took its first voyage from Chicago to the Twin Cities earlier this year in late May. The Borealis line is a new route that services popular cities in the Midwest, and it's getting much more attention than anticipated. In its first month of service, more than 18,500 people bought tickets.

Why do people love it so much? The corridor between these cities is well-traveled, and a shorter train line offers faster travel, fewer delays, and cheaper tickets. Formerly, the Empire Builder was the main line that traveled through this corridor. Passengers often had to take multiple trains to get in between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul, making it a cumbersome journey. The Borealis now provides a direct and speedy route between the two destinations.

Amtrak's Borealis line displays the reward of local governments working to create public transportation options. The Borealis line was completely state-supported by Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Amtrak is a federal government entity, but it has several state-sponsored lines that are shorter and don't make overnight trips. These state-sponsored train lines account for a hefty portion of ridership .

That's why the creation of the Borealis line is so exciting. With such immediate and booming ridership, the Borealis displays the public's need and desire for state-sponsored lines. The immediate and immense support of the Borealis line is encouraging and could be a sign for other states to follow suit.

6 Amtrak Trips Perfect For Retirees

Why fly or drive when you can save money and enjoy comfort by taking an Amtrak train to these bucket list travel destinations during retirement?

The Borealis Line Opens Easy And Affordable Opportunities For Travel

From commuters to adventurers, the borealis line creates an easy way to travel.

There are a lot of people who can benefit from the route serviced by the new Borealis line. Connecting Chicago and the Twin Cities by train offers increased convenience for vacationers, workers, and personal travel. The full line between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul takes about 7.5 hours to travel, with ample stops servicing towns and cities in between. And, anyone who is stressed about travel costs will love the affordable Borealis line; it only costs about $41 one-way to take the full route.

For the weekend explorer, there are lots of unique stops between Chicago and the Twin Cities that offer small-town experiences and interesting attractions. This is great for anyone planning a day trip from Chicago or Minneapolis for a quick day or weekend away. With shorter sections, like a 4.5-hour ride from Milwaukee to St.Paul, the Borealis line is a great way to get around to Midwestern cities.

The Borealis line also opens up opportunities for commuters to save money traveling to and from work. Connecting suburban towns to big cities by train aids in workers' ability to commute to work with ease, dodging rush-hour traffic and parking fees.

Students might also find it convenient to take the Borealis line to and from school if they live along or near the line. Taking the train can often be much cheaper than flying , especially since Amtrak offers student discounts , which is an excellent benefit for students coming home for the holidays.

7 Best Amtrak Routes To Experience During The Summer

Explore the US by train in comfort on these epic summer Amtrak routes, where experiences are unmatched and adventures are unforgettable!

The Borealis Line Brings Big Benefits To Traveling

Train travel is becoming way more attractive to americans thanks to its benefits.

If you're wondering why so many people are interested in taking the train, it's because of the convenience, affordability, and general comfort. The Borealis trains offer upgraded cars, comfortable seats with legroom, Wi-Fi, and café cars. There are lots of comfortable benefits to enjoy on this high-speed train , which is especially great for commuters.

The Borealis line will reduce the number of cars on the road, which can lead to lowered emissions and wear-and-tear on the road. If ridership of the Borealis continues to stay high, it's projected that this could save $32-million on highway maintenance costs .

Of course, like any form of travel, there are setbacks. Sometimes, Amtrak trains can get very crowded, and this heavily decreases the comfort level. Especially around high-demand cities with airports, Amtrak trains can get clogged with passengers. Passengers have also reported occasional delays and unreliable Wi-Fi connections.

The hope is that with the creation of more state-sponsored lines like the Borealis, there will be less congestion on trains and highways alike. With increased ridership comes the increased demand for more train lines, which can make traveling around America much more affordable and convenient for all.

This U.S. National Park Has Over 700 Lakes, Beautiful Glaciers, and an Iconic 50-mile Scenic Drive

Here's everything you need to know before visiting Glacier National Park in Montana.

aurora borealis train trip

How to Get There

Know before you go, best time to visit, best things to do, places to stay, places to eat.

Colton Stiffler/Getty Images

Of all the national parks within the United States, Glacier National Park stands out as one of the very best — and thus one of the most popular. Located in the northwest region of Montana, bordering Canda’s Waterton Lakes National Park, the 1,583 square miles of protected land welcomes around three million visitors every year. Many come for the hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and pockets of unparalleled quiet and peace in the park’s more remote spots; others are there with the goal of driving the 50-mile-long Going-to-the-Sun Road.

No matter your ideal itinerary, one thing’s for sure: You’ll want to arrive to Glacier National Park with at least a basic understanding of the area’s layout and what to expect. And to provide you with a comprehensive guide to the park, we spoke to a few local experts.

Read on to discover everything you need to know before visiting Glacier National Park — including tips on when to visit and where to hike, eat, and stay.

Meet the Expert

  • Aubrie Lorona is the owner of Swan Mountain Outfitters , an outfitter that leads the only horseback rides inside Glacier National Park.
  • Derek DesRosier is the general manager of Sun Tours , a local Blackfeet business and Indigenous National Park Service concessionaire.
  • Nicolina Baldassari is the social media and communications lead at Glacier Guides and Montana Raft .

Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell, Montana is the closest major airport and about a 30-minute drive from the park’s west entrance. It’s served by six major airlines: Alaska, Delta, United, Allegiant, American, and Sun Country. Missoula International Airport (MSO) and Great Falls International Airport (GTF) — 120 and 200 miles away, respectively — are also options for those traveling by plane. Upon arrival, a rental car will be necessary if you want the flexibility and freedom to explore the park and surrounding area on your own time.  Taking the train to Glacier National Park is another transportation option. Amtrak’s historic Empire Builder line makes year-round stops at West Glacier and serves East Glacier seasonally.

“During peak season, parking can be challenging,” says Glacier Guides and Montana Raft’s Nicolina Baldassari, who suggests using the first-come, first-served shuttle service along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, “which can help you avoid parking hassles and still access popular trailheads.”

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

Any trip to Glacier National Park starts with getting a pass. “You have to have a park pass to enter any gate into Glacier National Park, and then certain corridors — North Fork, Many Glacier, and Going-to-the-Sun Road — also require a vehicle reservation to enter the corridor between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. during peak season,” says Aubrie Lorona, owner of Swan Mountain Outfitters. If you already have the $80 annual America the Beautiful pass , which grants pass holders access to most U.S. national parks, you’ll be all set on the entrance fee.

You’ll also want to set aside at least two days to see the park — though three to five will allow you to check off all of the main sites without rushing. After all, says Lorona, “Montana is a big state, and it takes over two hours to get from one side of the park to the other… [and] visitors should check driving times and distances between lodging and activities.”

Given the park’s name, it’s not uncommon for visitors to come in search of the glaciers themselves. “Many people come to the park and then ask where all the glaciers are. Not a lot of travelers are aware that many of the glaciers have melted away, leaving only about 25 left in the park today due to global warming,” says Baldassari. Seeing a glacier is also relatively difficult, as most of them are located high up on the Continental Divide. Jackson Glacier, however, is the easiest glacier to see in the park; Jackson Glacier Overlook is located on the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road.

As is the case for many national parks out west, wildlife is one of the largest draws. Within the park, there are bats, beavers, bighorn sheep, elk, mountain goats, wolverines, and, yes, bears. “Bears are common in the park. Always carry bear spray and know how to use it. Store food properly and be aware of your surroundings, especially when hiking,” says Baldassari. Visitors should also brush up on the park’s wildlife safety regulations. That includes staying at least 75 feet from most wildlife (the likes of moose, deer, mountain goats, and elk) and at least 300 feet from wolves and bears.

This part of Montana is also deeply tied to the history of the Blackfeet, Pend d'Oreille, Salish, and Kootenai people. “It is largely unknown that Glacier National Park is traditional territory for several Tribes, most specifically the Blackfeet on the east side,” says Derek DesRosier, the general manager of Sun Tours. “All Tribes still practice some form of traditional and modern use of the landscape, and even though it is globally recognized as a national park now, to us, it is a sacred place, full of medicine, connection, and history.”

Glacier National Park is open year-round, though its appeal, activities, and number of visitors shift by the season. Summer is, unsurprisingly, the most popular time to visit, as the weather is warmer and all of the park’s facilities are open. If you’re prepared to navigate the crowds, you’ll be rewarded with good conditions for driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road and the possibility of seeing purple asters and beargrass, among other wildflower species in the park. “I believe the best time of year to visit GNP is mid to late July [when] most of the snow has melted off the trails and the wildflowers start blooming,” says Baldassari.

If you want to avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic of July and August, but still drive the entire Going-to-the-Sun Road, see wildlife, and get a glimpse of the colorful foliage, head to the park in early fall. “My personal favorite time to visit Glacier is in September or October when the crowds have died down and we are in the peak of fall colors,” says Lorona. “Sometimes, you can even get the stunning combination of snow-capped peaks up high and fall forest colors down low. It is breathtaking.” Most roads in the national park are open seasonally, so check the website for current conditions as you plan your trip.

Craig Moore/Getty Images

Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road.

If there’s one thing to check off your list in Glacier National Park, it’s the 50-mile drive between West Glacier and St. Mary. “Driving Going-to-the-Sun Road at sunrise or sunset is a treat,” says Lorona. “I have driven that road hundreds of times over the years, and it always looks different because it changes with the weather, light, and time of day.” The route takes you by glacial lakes, waterfalls, observation points, and even across Logan Pass, the highest point on the road and the location where it crosses the Continental Divide.

Explore the park on horseback.

“Glacier is now more popular as a hiking park, but all the trails in the park were originally founded via horseback, so there is something very authentic and nostalgic about seeing the park's beauty from the back of a horse,” says Lorona. Her company has stables at Many Glacier, Lake McDonald, Apgar, and West Glacier, and the team offers a range of ride types — from beginner-friendly one-hour experiences to half-day and full-day excursions for advanced riders.

Get out on the water.

With more than 700 lakes (131 of which are named) inside Glacier National Park, it comes as no surprise that water activities take precedence in the summer months. “I love swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking in Lake McDonald. The water is crystal clear, which allows you to see the rocks [that] are literally rainbow colored,” says Lorona. Keep in mind that the water will be cold, so it’s best to exercise caution and avoid swimming for prolonged periods of time. Baldassari also recommends “rafting on the Middle Fork of the Flathead,” and there are several companies that offer guided raft trips along the class two and three whitewater rapids.

Try to see the northern lights.

Glacier National Park is a certified International Dark Sky Park and one of the best places to see the northern lights in the United States . Due to increased solar activity , the aurora borealis is supposed to be particularly strong in 2024 and 2025; park visitors can prepare for a light-night viewing in Apgar Village or Logan Pass, or along the shorelines of St. Mary Lake or Lake McDonald.

Dan Shugar/Getty Images

If you’re going to Glacier National Park — home to more than 700 miles of hiking trails — you’ll want to pack lots of layers, water, and appropriate footwear. Be sure to research trails ahead of time to pinpoint your ideal type of hike, as the park has everything from easy out-and-back routes to more challenging overnight routes.

Highline Trail

“One of the most stunning hikes in the park is the Highline Trail , but it is 12 miles and not for the faint of heart,” says Lorona. The exact distance you hike may vary, though, as there are several different ways to tackle the trail. You can either complete it as a one-way trail — from the Logan Pass Visitor Center to The Loop Trailhead, taking the shuttle back to your car — or as an out-and-back trail; there’s also the option to venture out to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook, which adds about 1.6 miles to your trek.

Avalanche Lake

“ Avalanche Lake is a more accessible hike for all levels of fitness,” says Lorona. Just under six miles in length, the hiking trail is also one of the most trafficked routes in the park; it’s recommended to start your hike earlier in the morning if you want to find parking.

Hidden Lake Overlook

“An easy, yet gorgeous view is also going to the Hidden Lake Overlook ; it's a must,” says Baldassari. About 2.7 miles in total, the route takes, on average, about an hour and 20 minutes to complete, and it’s known for its mountain goat sightings in the summer months.

Other Hiking Trails in Glacier National Park

DesRosier also suggests “getting off the road onto a less popular trail,” recommending Aster Park Overlook to Two Medicine, Peigan Pass to Siyeh Bend, and Ptarmigan Tunnel to Many Glacier.

Courtesy of Pursuit Collection

Hotels and Lodges

“If you are looking to stay directly in the national park and want a few more amenities, Many Glacier Hotel is my favorite historic lodge,” says DesRosier. Lorona is also a fan of the 214-room property, which she says is “on the east side and located right on the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake… talk about stunning views.” Lake McDonald Lodge , which dates back to 1913, is another great option, with 82 guest rooms, three dining options, and modest yet comfortable amenities.

Historic Chalets

Two of the original nine chalets built in Glacier National Park remain open today for overnight travelers — and our experts agree they’re a magical addition to any summer trip.  “If you are extremely lucky, and are up for some hiking, Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet are once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” says DesRosier. Lorona notes that “getting a room can be difficult as they sell out very quickly, but [it’s] so worth it.” Reservations can be made online for both chalets.

Campgrounds

Camping can be a more affordable lodging option, and Glacier is home to over 1,000 camping sites across 13 frontcountry campgrounds. Reserving a campsite is highly recommended, especially if you’re traveling to Glacier anytime between June and early September; most campgrounds can be booked on Recreation.gov . Baldassari recommends Apgar Campground or St. Mary Campground, and Lorona is fond of “the backcountry campgrounds in the Belly River area because it feels off the beaten path.” Alternatively, says DesRosier, “If you are camping and are okay with being on the periphery of the park, you can have phenomenal views of the mountains and enjoy less crowded areas at any of the Blackfeet Tribal Campgrounds : Red Eagle, Chewing Black Bones, and Buffalo Calf.”

“There are very limited options within the national park,” says DesRosier, “but the dining room in the Glacier Park Lodge and [the] Prince of Wales Hotel are definite highlights.” Or, as Lorona suggests, feel free to bring a “picnic lunch [to eat] alongside a lake or waterfall or on top of a peak.” Other restaurants in the park include Eddie's Café , Russell’s Fireside Dining Room at Lake McDonald Lodge, and Nell’s at Swiftcurrent .

The number of restaurants and places to eat increases just outside of the park. “If I were to go to a restaurant, I would go to Last Best Pizza right outside the park's west entrance if I wanted something casual. If I was looking for something a little fancier, I would do The Kitchen at Josephine's Speakeasy in Coram,” says Lorona. Baldassari says one of her favorites is the Sunflower Cafe at Glacier Campground by the park’s west entrance.

We took weekend trips to Red Wing and La Crosse on new Amtrak Borealis

We rode the new, on-time Amtrak train service for jaunts to historic Red Wing and fun La Crosse, Wis.

By Tony Randgaard

The recent launch of Amtrak’s Borealis, a second train between St. Paul and Chicago, evoked the midcentury golden age of Midwest train travel — when the dueling Hiawatha and Zephyr behemoths barreled down the Mississippi River Valley at top speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

I was excited, yet wary of Amtrak’s 21st-century record of running the existing Empire Builder train more than two hours late. But there was adventure ahead, history to explore and no time to sit on my hands.

It turns out that the new 54-mph Borealis is averaging only a 27-minute delay on its entire trek to Chicago, and 43 minutes on the return. That was all the encouragement I needed to jump into two very entertaining weekend excursions: to Red Wing, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis.

Compelling history in Red Wing

In June, I sampled the new service with a same-day trip from St. Paul’s Union Depot to Red Wing. My round trip cost $18. Weekend parking at Union Depot is a bargain at $4 per day. Borealis was right on time in both directions. The train itself is not new, but the leather seats and Wi-Fi were new to me.

Red Wing is perfect for a Borealis day trip because the town is very walkable, and the daily 11:05 a.m. departure from St. Paul and 12:35 p.m. arrival leaves five hours to explore. There is plenty of compelling history within three blocks of the Red Wing station. Our primary targets were the iconic St. James Hotel and the majestic Sheldon Theatre, institutions enhanced by the legacy of two pioneering women.

The Sheldon was born from an $83,000 trust gifted to the city in 1900 by businessman Theodore B. Sheldon. His widow, Annie, led the project to build a leading-edge entertainment showplace. The Renaissance Revival building was a masterpiece of sculpture, decorative painting and arches that earned its nickname, the Jewel Box.

The theater is brimming with intriguing Masonic symbolism. Annie Sheldon’s love of Roman and Greek gilded hearts, cherubs, peacocks and eagles appears in every nook and cranny of the four-level hall. Grab a self-guided tour booklet to help unlock the mystery. We toured the public areas for free by visiting when the box office is open: 1-5:30 p.m. Wed.-Fri. and 12:30-4 p.m. Sat. Call ahead to ensure there is not a play rehearsal on the day you visit (1-651-388-8700).

In 1875, Red Wing was the wheat-trading capital of the world. Eleven civic-minded businessmen banded together to develop a commensurate luxury hotel. Architect Edward Bassford provided the solution with the four-story Italianate-style St. James. Its Victorian accents, furnishings and decor are wonderfully preserved.

In 1914, Clara Lillyblad began her 62-year reign running the food and lodging side of the business, building the hotel’s reputation for cuisine. The meals were so good that the train layover in Red Wing was increased to an hour to enable passengers to experience the dining.

We enjoyed Scarlet Kitchen and Bar, the second-floor restaurant featuring patio views of the river. Another interesting find was the free Ski Jumping Museum down the hall. After 4 p.m., grab a refreshment at the vintage speakeasy bar, the Port, on the lower level.

It is said that Clara’s spirit and the ghost of a young girl (who drowned in a well) haunt the hotel. I’m glad I didn’t know that when I was wandering the deserted hallways.

From the St. James, it is less than half a block to the Red Wing Shoes flagship store. The store displays hundreds of its well-crafted shoes, but is also a testament to the company’s hundred-year history. There are educational exhibits about shoemaking and a museum on the second floor. Enthusiastic tourists take selfies with the World’s Largest Boot.

Just up the block, don’t bypass the Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop. We refueled with their delish pastries and can testify why they have won awards for best Minnesota bakery.

We returned to the station in time for the westbound Borealis’ 5:40 p.m. return to St. Paul.

Riverside fun in La Crosse

Using the Borealis for an overnight trip to La Crosse had been at the top of my bucket list. There is so much to do, from river views to scenic bluffs, and a plethora of outstanding food and drink establishments.

Unlike Red Wing, the La Crosse Amtrak station does not facilitate an easy walking tour. No matter. I took advantage of the city’s biking network.

aurora borealis train trip

For my $54 round trip, Borealis arrived right on time in La Crosse at 2:16 p.m. I caught a short taxi ride to the Radisson Hotel, and from there it was just a few steps to a Drift Cycle bike-sharing kiosk, with 15 locations across the city. When you sign up on the Drift Cycle app, your first 60 minutes are free; the regular rate is only $1 per 30 minutes. For an extended bike rental, the Wrench & Roll bike shop is a 15-minute walk from the Amtrak station and a standard rental is $28 per day or $60 for the weekend (1-608-406-2261).

The city’s Riverside Park is an urban oasis, delivering spectacular views of the tumultuous intersection of the Mississippi, La Crosse and Black Rivers. A steady stream of pleasure craft, barges and steamships splashed against the canvas of the La Crosse Bridge. At times it was impossible to keep pedaling. I just leaned against the closest bench to soak in the moment of zen.

The free, beautiful International Friendship Gardens nearby reveal wedding-photo backdrops at every turn. Wind your way through small waterfalls, fountains, a koi pond and meticulously manicured floral settings. The back side of the park pours into two paved bike trails: the Vietnam Veterans and Jim Asfoor trails. The combined paths create a 2.3-mile oval tracing serene wetlands and the La Crosse River.

Board a cruise on the La Crosse Queen paddewheeler. The line offers reasonably priced 1.5- to 2.5-hour pizza, brunch or dinner cruises featuring surprisingly good food ( lacrossequeen.com ).

The Dahl Auto Museum displays pristine classic cars from many eras. Kids love the exhibits (it’s free for ages 8 and younger) and the admission is only $5 (adults), $4 (seniors) or $3 (kids over 8). From the Dahl, it was an easy 8-minute pedal to the Historic Hixon House Museum , an original 1858 pioneer home ( lchshistory.org ).

Before my 3:58 p.m. train home the next day, I toasted the end of my La Crosse adventure at the Waterfront Restaurant & Tavern in Riverside Park. The patio presents memorable river views and sunsets, enhanced by a killer happy hour ( thewaterfrontlacrosse.com ). The restaurant receives accolades for its filets, salmon and calamari.

I was skeptical of the new Borealis service, but after using it as a reliable conduit to these two great river cities, I’ve become a reborn Amtrak fan. It’s about time.
