Africa is calling

Destinations we travel to

Southern and East Africa are quite easily some of the best safari and holiday destinations in the world. Johannesburg is the regional airport hub which feeds into all these neighbouring countries. Tanzania in East Africa you can fly directly into Kilimanjaro International airport, and also easily across to Zanzibar. Most of these countries have a very limited access to Kosher, due to dwindling or non existent Jewish populations. However using our contacts in the hotels and lodges, we have a solution for those Kosher clients who want to venture further out of South Africa, using our contacts and are happy to perhaps have a slightly limited selection of Kosher variety in terms of their meals.

Guest Feedback

We were taken care of like a queen and king, with our names at every airport and upon arrival at each venue, and truly enjoyed ourselves. It’s hard to say what our favorite thing was, since every single driver, every guide was so knowlegable, every place we stayed was so beuatiful, all the kosher food outstanding, and the ambiance was beyond spectacular. We have never had our own chef and Mashgiach, so were in awe of how delicious, more than 5-star the food was and more than ample, ate outdoors in elegant settings, except Shabbat when we ate in our room. Even then, the service was top rated, and everything was thought about down to the challah board and cover, hot tray, timers, kiddush cup, and hot pot. We were amazed. The views from every single room we stayed in were magnificent. If you like nature, animals, and hiking which we do, this was beyond amazing!
We cannot thank you enough for making this an amazing trip.

The best safari trip in Kenya

9 days, 8 nights of a perfect African experience!

Nairobi – Aberdares – Olpejeta – Thompson – Nakuru – Naivasha – crescent Island – Masai Mara

Welcome to Kenya!

Pick up from the Airport and drive to Aberdare’s National Park. The Park is in the Central Highlands of Kenya west of mountain Kenya providing a habitat for elephants, black rhinos, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white columbus monkeys, buffalos, warthogs and bushbucks among others. Rare sightings include those of the Giant Forest hog, bongo, golden cat, serval cat, African wild cat, African civet cat and the blue duiker. Thereafter you will be transferred to the Ark Lodge where you will spend the rest of the day on the lookout for animals visiting the waterhole. The lodge is set in the heart of the park and overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which attracts a host of awesome wildlife. Dinner and overnight at Ark Lodge.

africa kosher travel

Have breakfast and transfer to drive to Olpejeta Ranch. This is a private conservancy located between the foothills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow-capped Mount Kenya. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals, including the “Big Five” (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and lion), Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, cheetah, and chimpanzee. Afternoon game drive in search of animals till evening and return for dinner and overnight at Sweet Waters Serena Camp.

Have breakfast and an en-route game drive. Transfer to Thompson Falls for a stopover, the Equator and the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint. Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park and arrive for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive. The Park is regarded by avid birders as the greatest World ornithological spectacle on the Earth and is currently a Rhino sanctuary. The birdlife here is world renown some of which include White Pelicans, Plovers, Egrets and Marabou Stork. Lake Nakuru boasts the most spectacular of Africa’s bird sights – enormous flocks of pastel pink flamingos, as well as other bird species. Here you have wonderful opportunities for photography as masses of pink bodies glide above the reflection of blue water. Your afternoon game drive takes you through the lush green park that surrounds the lake. It is also one of the very few places in Africa to see the white Rhino and rare Rothschild Giraffe. Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge.

africa kosher travel

Have breakfast and a game drive. Transfer to Lake Naivasha arriving for lunch. In the afternoon, Get the chance to see Lake Naivasha, the second biggest freshwater lake in the Rift Valley. Take a boat ride and on to crescent Island for bird watching and a brief walking safari among the wildlife. The shores host abundant birdlife including pelicans, cormorants and fish-eagles with their haunting cry. Back to the hotel to rest and get ready for Shabbat. Dinner and overnight at Lake Naivasha Sawela Lodge.

africa kosher travel

A relaxing day and rest at the hotel on the shores of Lake Naivasha. Enjoy the large lawns, free-ranging animals in the area, stunning lake view, walking tours, a swimming pool, and other hotel services. You can order high-quality Shabbat meals (Includes challahs, fish, salads, meat, and wine that will come to your hotel).

Have breakfast and depart for Masai Mara Game Reserve, seen by many as the jewel of Kenya’s park. This is Kenya’s number one park and is always on every tourist’s “Must See List”. Full of life with various types of animals and birds, Masai Mara is the climax of every safari in Kenya. Its rolling grasslands and acacia savannah have time and again been captured on film with the movie “Out of Africa” being the most famous. Masai Mara is home to the “Big Five” (Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Rhino) and over 450 bird species.

africa kosher travel

The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well spread rainfall year-round. Apart from the big five, the Masai Mara is most famous for the annual migration of over a million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle etc. from the Serengeti in northern Tanzania crossing the Mara River into Kenya in search of fresh feeding grounds, which takes place in late July to September. During this crossing, hundreds of animals are swept away by the first moving Mara River and others are killed by the ferocious African Crocodiles. This crossing gives true meaning to the phrase “Survival of the fittest”.

Even when the annual wildebeest migration is quiet, the Mara offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa, great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands of elands, buffaloes, impalas and Grant’s gazelles. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Mara River, while cheetahs prowl the plains.

Arrive at Ashnil Mara Camp for check-in & lunch. In the afternoon head out with your driver and start spotting nature at its best, exploring wildlife and as the sun starts to edge dip into the African horizon it will be the perfect opportunity for you to capture the beautiful Mara landscape on film. Dinner and overnight at  Ashnil Mara Camp .

Morning breakfast at the camp and afterward head out with your packed lunch boxes and spend the day in the reserve as you explore and experience nature in its raw form; the landscape is breathtaking with its network of roads specially constructed for game viewing. Break for lunch at a picnic site before you continue spotting wild animals until late afternoon when you return to the camp for freshening up and dinner. All meals and overnight at Mara Ashnil Camp.

africa kosher travel

Rise up early in the morning and have a warm cup of tea/coffee. Drive out at 6.30 AM and have a morning Game drive. During this time, chances are you can spot many animals because of the cool temperature thus the animals will not be hiding in the bushes and are still active. Continue with the exploration of the Masai Mara until around 9.30 AM when you return to the Camp for a breakfast. In the afternoon, head out with the driver for an afternoon game drive and for visiting the Masai Tribe. Return to Mara Ashnil Camp in the evening for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Ashnil Mara Camp .

africa kosher travel

Have breakfast and an en-route game drive. Transfer to Nairobi and visit the Masai Market then drop off at the airport for your night flight home.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
