December Weather in Japan

Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Although the exact dates of each season vary by location, December is generally recognized as the month when  autumn ends   and   winter begins .

☁️ Early December Weather Conditions in Japan

You’ll generally experience cooler, but not frigid, weather during the beginning of the month. Of course, the further north you go up in Japan, the colder it gets.

Here are some averages to know for early December:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 40 °F to 56 °F in the southern regions (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 20 °F to 43 °F in the northern areas (e.g., Hokkaido).
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – December is Japan’s driest month, with an average of five rainy days out of 31. Rain is more common during the first half of the month, but not by much.

Rainy days are characterized by  occasional showers lasting  one to three hours. It’s rare to experience long-lasting downpours.

  • ☀️ Daylight hours – December begins with ten hours   of daylight. The typical sunrise is around 6:30 am, and the sunset is around 4:30 pm.

A view of a modern city with skyscrapers during sunset.

🥶 Late December Weather Conditions in Japan

During the second half of December in Japan, you’ll start experiencing colder and dryer conditions . Here are some averages to know:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 38 °F to 53 °F on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 17 °F to 30 °F on the north side (e.g., Sapporo).
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – Late December will continue to see some rainy days (on average, less than four days), but they should lessen as the month progresses.
  • ☀️ Daylight hours – Daylight time drops to 9.5 hours by the end of the month. Sunrise is typically around 7 am, and sunset is around 4:30 pm.

🍀 My Sister’s December Experience in Japan

My sister and her fiance visited Japan during the last ten days of December . They stayed on the south side of the island and went to three different areas: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka .

During their trip, they primarily experienced cold but sunny days . They wore layers, puffer jackets, and some winter accessories (e.g., scarves, warm hats, gloves).

Of the ten days they were there, they experienced rain once in Kyoto for one to two hours.

This 10-day Japan itinerary combines visiting Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo with two epic adventures.

Two couples wearing winter jackets and long pants standing in front a gold gate door.

❄️ Does It Snow in Japan in December?

Whether you’ll get snow in Japan in December varies by region.

Snow is rare on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka). Even if you get a bit of it, it rarely sticks.

In comparison, snow is common on the north side (e.g., Hokkaido). Snowfall can start as early as late October and will stick around until as late as April.

Hokkaido becomes a  winter wonderland  in November. However, the popular Sapporo Snow Festival occurs in early February every year.

Is December a Good Time to Travel to Japan?

Japan is a great place to visit year-round, as every season and month offers something different in terms of activities, special events, and weather.

That said, December is not the most popular time to visit Japan, which means that there are both advantages and disadvantages to visiting during that month.

👍🏻 Upsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in the month of December has a few upsides:

1. Japan lights up in December.

Japan has a tradition of decorating its streets and buildings with lights during the winter months. The major cities are known for their impressive light displays and elaborate winter illuminations.

December is a  particularly festive month with Christmas and New Year’s Eve . While Japan celebrates Christmas, it’s seen as a festive and commercial event, not a religious one like in the United States.

A city decorated with winter lights.

2. December is typically less crowded (with an exception).

Tourist attractions that are generally overcrowded and have long lines during peak season are more manageable in December .

The exception is the week of Christmas and New Year’s Eve when domestic travel and tourism pick up. When my sister visited Osaka around this time, popular places like Dotonbori were packed.

Japan’s  peak tourist seasons  are when the cherry blossoms bloom in late March to early April, and autumn foliage appears from late October to early December.

3. December is a perfect time to enjoy the onsens.

Japan is famous for its onsens (natural hot springs). December’s cold weather makes it an ideal time to take a dip in the onsens.

In contrast, the weather was still hot when I visited in September, so I sometimes felt  overly warm in an onsen .

See what visiting Japan is like in September .

A tranquil Japanese-style building with some trees.

4. December is a great time for winter sports.

Hokkaido in the north is renowned for its ideal conditions for winter sports . December is a fantastic time to visit the region to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, ice skate, and more.

🍀 My Sister’s Positive Experience With Visiting in December

My sister and her fiance enjoyed the festive light decorations while walking around Japan in December. The streets of Harajuku in Tokyo and Dontobori in Osaka were adorned with lights, giving the cities a cheerful atmosphere.

They also experienced fewer crowds the week before Christmas , and the crowd noticeably increased the last week when more locals were traveling and celebrating. Tokyo’s teamLab, which is usually a zoo, was significantly less crowded.

One of the best things about visiting Japan in December is eating warm winter food , including udon, ramen, and Japanese barbeque. They are incredibly delicious in the cold weather.

A bowl with marbled pork, noodles, and mushrooms.

👎🏻 Downsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in December also has a few downsides:

1. December is not the time for fall foliage or cherry blossoms.

If you are lucky, you might see some orange in early December. But in general, you will  miss the cherry blossoms  and maybe see some fall foliage.

In December, the surrounding trees will mostly be either green or bare , so it’s not the best time for parks and gardens.

A park with yellow grass and some bare trees with a city behind it.

2. The weather is cold.

The weather in December is cold, with nights dipping into the 30s °F . This will make being outside more challenging, especially if you plan to wait in long lines at popular restaurants and attractions.

Hiking Mount Fuji is a bucket list item for some people, but it’s closed during the winter season.

People walking on the streets of Japan wearing winter coats.

3. Some businesses will be closed around New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve is a culturally significant celebration for Japanese people, so more business and service closures will occur during that timeframe.

🍀 My Sister’s Negative Experience With Visiting in December

My sister’s and her fiance’s biggest disappointment with visiting Japan in December was how bare all the trees and surrounding gardens were. Ueno Park in Tokyo, for example, was underwhelming, without any leaves or cherry blossoms .

Also, they ate at some very popular restaurants that required waits of up to two hours, and the cold made standing outside uncomfortable .

They also noticed that none of the winter shopping sales (e.g., big discounts for cashmere and winter coats) were in effect in December. Most winter sales start in January, so you’ll miss out on those.

5 Great Things To Do in December in Japan

Due to the smaller crowds and light displays, December is a great time to explore major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

If you’re looking for activities that are more specific to December, here are five unique and great things to do in Japan during that month:

1. Catch the Chichibu Night Festival

🏮 Why : The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan’s top three festivals, and it takes place annually in December. This winter festival features intricately decorated floats with lanterns, firework displays, and streets filled with festival food.

📍 Location : Chichibu Night Festival takes place in Chichibu , two-and-a-half hours northwest of Tokyo by train.

🎟️ Admission : Free

🗓️ Timing : Chichibu Night Festival takes place December 2 and 3 annually

2. Enjoy a Dip in an Onsen

♨️ Why : December is an amazing time to enjoy Japan’s numerous hot springs as temperatures drop.

A view of a peaceful, Japanese garden with a private bath.

📍 Location : While hot springs can be found virtually anywhere in Japan, the town of  Hakone  is particularly known for them. Hakone is known for its geothermal activity and stunning natural landscapes.

If you want to be further north, Zao Onsen is another famous hot spring area that gets snow. The nearby Mount Zao is known for an interesting weather phenomenon called snow monsters.

🎟️ Admission : The cost of an onsen is determined by several factors. A budget-friendly public onsen can be as cheap as $2, and a luxury private onsen can go for over $100.

🗓️ Timing : Onsens are available year-round. Japanese people enjoy them at almost any time of the day.

Another great way to warm up during winter is by eating  seasonal cuisine  like nabe (hot pot). Nabe is a winter dish with seafood, meat, tofu, and vegetables. Japanese convenience stores also start serving hot snacks and beverages .

3. See a Winter Illumination

✨ Why : The Winter season in Japan is known for its impressive display of winter illuminations. Some of the most impressive illuminations are:

  • Sagamiko Illumillion – one of the largest displays of light.
  • Sendai Pageant of Starlight – showcases hundreds of trees covered in LED lights.
  • Ashikaga Flower Fantasy – includes a music-synchronized light show.
  • Osaka Hikari Renaissance – lights up several of Osaka’s historic buildings.

🎟️ Admission : The illuminations mentioned above range from free admission to $15 USD.

🗓️ Timing : Many illuminations start in October and November and go until the end of the year.

4. Visit Shirakawa-go

⛰️ Why : Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has a village known for its traditional centuries-old farmhouses that look spectacular during the winter months when it snows. It’s the perfect place to see snowy landscapes near Tokyo.

📍 Location : Shirakawa-go is in the remote mountains of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. One way to see it is with a knowledgeable local guide .

🎟️ Admission : The village has no admission fee, but you may want to take a guided tour.

🗓️ Timing : The Gifu Prefecture typically starts receiving snow in mid-December. The heavy snowfall begins in January.

5. Do a Winter Sport

⛷️ Why : Japan boasts ideal winter conditions for many winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and ice skating.

📍 Location : Hokkaido , Nagano , or Niigata are known for excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. They’re some of Japan’s best places to visit during the winter season.

December in Japan’s Majors Cities: Tips and Firsthand Experience

If you’re concerned about the December weather in Japan and how the cold may impact your travel plans, below are my sister’s and her fiance’s first-hand experiences of visiting in December 2023.

The weather didn’t drastically change their itinerary, but it did influence it.

🗓️ December in Tokyo

My sister and her fiance were in Tokyo for five days. It was consistently in the 40s °F , which didn’t stop them from enjoying some of the city’s outdoor spaces.

That said, while Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden still had some orange and red coloring, Ueon Park was mostly bare and underwhelming, so December can be a hit or miss for how nice the gardens and parks will be.

As you’ll likely spend most of the time indoors, make sure to plan for hot food and great indoor experiences. They enjoyed:

  • Amazing warm food like grilled beef cutlets at Gyukatsu Motomura
  • Exploring the beautiful and immersive teamLab Planets , which was not too crowded and had warm water running that warmed up everyone’s feet
  • Staying indoors and shopping around Ginza
  • Seeing all the festive lights at Omoide Yokocho . This street is also known for bars and izakayas .

Their biggest pro tip is to wear layers in Tokyo in December. Many of the city’s indoor areas, including train stations, malls, shops, and restaurants, blast the heat.

A narrow streets decorated with lights.

December Events and Activities in Tokyo

Tokyo also hosts some special winter events in December:

  • Tokyo Christmas Market – an extravagant market that is only held in December.
  • Tokyo Station – a worthwhile light display that happens in December.
  • Oji Fox Parade – a costume-filled parade around Oji Inari Shine that happens at the end of the year.
  • The Hagoita Fair – a traditional event happening in Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple.
  • Ice skating rings – Many ice skating rinks start popping up around Tokyo, with Midtown Ice Rink being one of the most well-known ones.
  • Tokyo Disneyland – puts up festive decorations and hosts Christmas parades.

🗓️ December in Kyoto

My sister and her fiance were in Kyoto for three days, and the weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., comfortable winter weather ).

Visiting Kyoto in December was great because there were  fewer crowds for famous places like the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which they loved.

A view of red shrines overlooking a city.

The most amazing thing about Kyoto in December was the chance to experience an onsen against the cold winter air. They stayed at Ryokan Rangestu, and highly recommend them.

December Events in Kyoto

Kyoto also hosts some exciting events in December:

  • Yamashina Gishi Matsuri – a parade featuring traditional clothing and armor that takes place on December 14th every year.
  • Shimai Kōbō  â€“ a bustling flea market that attracts both foreign visitors and locals. It’s especially festive and exciting in December.
  • Toji Temple & Hogonin Temple – light up in December, along with other temples.

🗓️ December in Osaka

My sister and her fiance were in Osaka for two days. The weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., mostly in the 40s °F ).

They spent most of their time in the famous Dotonbori and the popular Osaka Aquarium. The weather did not impact their plans ; they would have gone to both places regardless of whether it was summer or winter.

They also rode the Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel . That was one of the only activities they were concerned about being outside in the cold, but it turns out that the individual capsules are enclosed.

What to Pack for Japan in December

Remember that you will experience mostly sunny but cold days in December in Japan.

Here are some things to remember to pack for a trip to Japan in December:

  • Winter outer layer – Temperatures will be cold, so bring a winter or puff jacket.

It’s important to bring layers when packing for December, as Japanese shops and restaurants tend to turn up the heat indoors when it’s cold outside.

  • Winter accessories – It can get windy and cloudy on some days, so if you run cold, it’s a good idea to pack warm hats, scarves, earmuffs, and gloves.

If you plan to visit open observation decks, like Shibuya Sky in Tokyo , know that winds can get strong, so you’ll want to bundle up.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – Don’t be afraid to pack hiking shoes if necessary (you’ll see many tourists walking around in them).

I’ve also written on what to pack for outdoor activities in their respective guides: see the Mt. Fuji packing list and the Shimanami Kaido packing list .

December in Japan: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

If you are planning to visit Japan in December, it's best to avoid traveling to the country during the last week of the month and the first week of January, because this period is one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan. Just as they are in Western countries, many people are off work during this time for the holidays, and that can make it difficult to get reservations for transportation and accommodations without a considerable amount of advanced planning. And forget about booking a hotel at the last minute during this time.

Christmas is not a Japanese national holiday , as most people there are not Christian but practitioners of Buddhism, Shintoism, or no religion at all. Accordingly, businesses and schools are open on Christmas unless the holiday falls on a weekend. For this reason, traveling around Christmas Day in Japan isn't as difficult as doing so in Western countries.

While Christmas Day is essentially like any other day in Japan, it's important to note that Christmas Eve is celebrated there. It has become a night for couples to spend a romantic time together at fancy a restaurant or hotel in Japan. So, if you plan to go out on Christmas Eve, consider making your reservations as early as possible.

New Year's Eve and Day in Japan

New Year's holidays are very important for the Japanese, and people usually spend New Year's Eve rather quietly with the family. Because many people travel out of Tokyo to visit their hometowns or go on vacation, Tokyo is quieter than usual on this day. However, temples and shrines are extremely busy, as it has become customary in Japan to spend the New Year focused on one's life and spirituality.

The New Year holidays also coincides with store sales, so it's a great time to get some bargain shopping done if you don't mind large crowds. January 1 is a national holiday in Japan, and people traditionally mark the holiday by eating several foods for certain purposes, such as ebi (shrimp) for longevity and kazunoko (herring roe) for fertility.

Because the New Year is widely considered the most important holiday in Japan , most businesses and establishments in the country, including medical institutions, are closed from about December 29 through January 3 or 4. In recent years, however, many restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and department stores have stayed open during the New Year holidays. So, if you manage to book your trip during this time, you'll have some options for dining and shopping.

Japan Weather in December

Japan is quite cold during the winter, with snow on the ground in many places across the country, but December is still pleasant in many places, as weather is more reminiscent of late fall than the middle of winter. Temperatures in December vary based on geography, but highs and lows in the middle of the country are generally mild:

  • Sapporo: 37 F/22 F
  • Tokyo: 54 F/39 F
  • Osaka: 53 F/40 F
  • Hiroshima: 52 F/37 F
  • Nagasaki: 55 F/42 F

December is also mostly dry with little rain or snow. The country receives just 1.7 inches (44 mm) of rainfall spread across nine days in December.

What to Pack

You'll want to pack general winter gear, including a coat, sweaters, and other layer-able tops, a scarf, and other winter accessories. It's a good idea to bring a warm hat and earmuffs for windy days. If you're planning to be outdoors in the cold, you can buy disposable kairo heating pads to protect your hands and feet. These handy pads cost around $2 USD for a pack of 10 and will stay warm up to 12 hours.

December Events in Japan

With the year coming to a close, there are plenty of traditional festivals and events that can add authenticity to your Japanese vacation.

  • Chichibu Yomatsuri (December 2): In this famous night festival, floats lit by lanterns are pulled through the town.
  • Sanpoji Daikon Festival (December 9-10): This Kyoto festival celebrates the popular daikon radish, which becomes available in the fall. More than 10,000 people eat the boiled radish during the celebration.
  • Akou Gishisai (December 14): This festival is a memorial to the 47 ronin (or wandering samurai) who committed suicide to avenge their master. The celebration includes traditional dance and warrior parades.

December Travel Tips

  • The New Year period might be a good time to stay in Tokyo. You may get good deals on nice hotels. On the other hand, onsen hot springs and snow resorts tend to be crowded with visitors. Early reservations are recommended if you plan to stay at onsen or snow sports destinations.
  • If you are taking long-distance trains, try to make seat reservations in advance. It's hard to get seats on non-reserved cars during the peak travel season.

In fact, some of these are hundreds of years old and well preserved! Without question, these iconic farmhouses are the main attractions in the area.

The arrival of winter brings plenty of snowfall there, and those farmhouses look absolutely impressive with piles of snow on their roofs.

The Shiroyama viewpoint offers the best vistas of the whole village, including the surrounding mountains covered in snow. You will be amazed looking at those traditional farmhouses from the observatory!

Visit Gassho-zukuri Minkaen , which is an open-air museum in the village consisting of a total 26 buildings including 9 buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties of Gifu Prefecture. This open-air museum recreates the traditional way of life of the people in the region.

There, an overnight stay at a farmhouse is highly recommended! If you fail to make a reservation, here is an alternative you may find useful. Be sure to book well in advance. With diverse landscapes and unique experiences, Shirakawa-go is a must-see attraction in Japan during winter.

If you are planning to go on holiday in Japan in the autumn months (late November – early December), the best place to explore is Kyoto.

In general, the peak autumn foliage comes in mid-November in Kyoto and you can experience the best views of the transitional autumn leaves until mid-December. How cool is that!

Kyoto is considered one of the best cities in Japan to see autumn leaves . The first week of December still is a very good time to see lush autumn foliage in gold and red tones.

In Kyoto, there are many popular autumn foliage spots, like Tofukuji, Nanzenji, Kodaiji, Kiyomizudera, Eikando, Chionin, and Kitano Tenmangu , to visit in early December. You’ll get some great views of the colorful trees there, and you can imagine why this is Kyoto’s most beautiful season.

If you want to experience a Japanese theatre in Kyoto, then visit Minamiza Theatre . This is one of the oldest Kabuki theatres in Japan founded in 1610. Surprisingly, you can watch Kabuki performances at this theater only in December ! You are lucky that you will visit Kyoto in December and you shouldn’t miss this opportunity.

10. Kamakura

Kamakura Daibutsu - The Great Buddha of Kamakura

Kamakura is an amazing place to visit. You can spend a lovely day in Kamakura as a day trip from Tokyo city. So, there is no need to stay a night or two, as the JR Yokosuka Line connects Tokyo station directly with Kamakura station.

This ancient city near Tokyo boasts a number of famous attractions, such as the Great Buddha of Kamakura , Hasedera Temple, Hokokuji Temple, Hachimangu Shrine, Meigetsuin Temple and more!

On the way to The Great Buddha of Kamakura from Hase Station , you will come across many shops selling antiques, local crafts, and unique souvenirs . It’s worth checking those shops, and you should look for something unique and useful to bring home!

You cannot say you have truly experienced the best highlights of Kamakura if you don’t visit the Great Buddha of Kamakura, also known as Kamakura Daibutsu, located at Kotoku-in temple . In fact, this is the symbol of this charming coastal town.

Don’t forget to visit Hasedera Temple in early December. You will see plenty of autumn’s most attractive shades around its temple complex. I was impressed seeing the giant wooden Buddha Statue inside the main temple building (Photography is prohibited). This is arguably one of the most tranquil and sacred spots in Kamakura.

TRAVELING JAPAN IN DECEMBER? BROWSE OUR RECOMMENDED DECEMBER EXPERIENCES IN JAPAN!

December in Japan might be chilly—bitingly so on some occasions—but you won’t feel the need to hole yourself up in your hotel room. This season offers so many unique things to do and see, you might be surprised at how time much you—and the locals —spend outside. From relaxing in hot springs to celebrating the holidays, there’s never a dull moment during this time of year! Here are our top picks for things to do in Japan in December.

WINTER ILLUMINATIONS

travelling to japan in december

Dreary winters simply don’t exist in Japan. In the coldest months with the darkest nights, Japan celebrates the season by turning its cities and towns into delightful fantasy worlds. City workers, shop owners, and volunteers dress up their districts with thousands of strands of twinkling lights. Winter illumination displays typically start in November and end after New Year’s, but specific dates vary between regions and neighborhoods. In Tokyo, Shibuya holds the “Blue Cave” display. Brilliant azures drip down from treetops and are reflected back up from a mirrored tarp on the road. The luminous glow encircles you as though you’re walking through a sparkling cavern. If you want to get out of the bustling city, head just a few hours north of Tokyo to Ashikaga Flower Park’s Flower Fantasy. Over four million LED bulbs bejewel the flower garden from October to February , including hanging lights that resemble seasonal flowers and lights that flash in sync with music. THE BLUE POND

travelling to japan in december

When Mt. Tokachi erupted in 1988, Hokkaido constructed a dam on Biei River to prevent the destructive effects of volcanic mudflow. As a result, several ponds sprung up nearby, but none so famous as the Blue Pond ( Aoi Ike ). The Blue Pond contains a mix of natural minerals that creates its marvelous hue, which contrasts with the small grove of ghostly Japanese larch and silver birch trees that jut from the water. The slightest breeze transforms the delicate color, and each season offers its own sights to behold. In December, the pond completely freezes over and traps the sapphire iridescence. Snowflakes cling to the branches of the birches and spot the surface of the ice. The Blue Pond mirrors the sky and forest in perfect symmetry, casting the surrounding nature in a beryl world. BATHE IN THE SNOW

travelling to japan in december

Bathing in a natural hot spring isn’t just a typical Japanese experience; it’s the best way to relax after a long day on a tour! Many people might feel hesitant to try this since you must enter a public bath in the nude, but please don’t let this hold you back! Baths are usually separated by gender, and you can use a small towel to strategically cover yourself. These hot, natural spring waters offer so many benefits. They fill your pores with minerals that can reduce inflammation, and best of all, their warmth helps revive your weary soul—especially in December. Nothing feels better than a dip in a piping hot bath after a spending the day out in the cold. Outdoor hot springs open all year round—even in the snowiest of months. In places like Jozankei , the waters gently envelop you in a warm hug. At last, you’ll be able to view the snow-capped mountains and white forests in comfort. It’s easy to stay too long and get over-heated, but if this happens, just reach over for a handful of fresh snow and plop it on your head! Click Here for More Information

CHICHIBU YOMATSURI

travelling to japan in december

On December 2nd and 3rd, Chichibu City in Saitama holds the Yomatsuri Festival. Along with Kyoto’s famous Gion Festival and Takayama’s festivals in spring and autumn , the Chichibu Yomatsuri is celebrated as one of Japan’s top three float festivals. Street food and drink stalls line the streets near Chichibu Shrine for both days, but the main events take place on the 3rd. From late afternoon to early evening, musicians playing flutes and drums accompany the procession of the ornate floats, which feature lanterns, tapestries, and gilded woodcarvings. After the procession ends, fireworks propel into central Chichibu’s sky for over two hours. If you’re traveling during winter, this is a rare opportunity to see one of Japan’s famous fireworks displays. Click Here for More Information

CELEBRATE THE DAWN OF THE NEW YEAR—LITERALLY

travelling to japan in december

In Japanese tradition, people stay up or wake up extremely early to see the first sunrise of the year. Prior to midnight, millions of people wait in front of shrines to pray and receive fortunes ( omikuji ). Those who can’t go at midnight have three days (January 1st-3rd) to complete this practice called hatsumode . During these days, you can see throngs of people lined up outside of major shrines. Meiji Jingu in Tokyo alone gets 3 million visitors every year! One of the most popular sites to watch the sunrise near Tokyo is the Oarai Isosaki shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture . While the shrine is fairly famous, the main attraction is the torii gate nearby that sits on the reef in the nearby Pacific shore. On New Year’s Day, locals and residents of neighboring prefectures flock here to witness the sun light up the shimmering water. A Japan Winter Itinerary + 7 Unique Things To Do In Japan In Winter

Thinking of visiting Japan in winter? Don’t leave these unique experiences off your Japan winter itinerary.

A Japan winter itinerary is going to be packed with magical sights that most tourists don’t get to see.

That’s because winter in Japan is a truly unique time – and that means you can enjoy some of the most unique things to do in Japan when you visit during the winter season.

If you’re still deciding when to visit Japan, this winter itinerary might just convince you that the colder months are one of the best times to visit Japan.

Even if you’ve visited Japan in the spring, summer or autumn, winter in Japan will be a completely new experience.

Here’s how to plan a trip to Japan in winter, including where to go, what to add to your Japan winter itinerary and must-know tips for visiting Japan in winter.

Is it worth visiting Japan in winter?

Japan 2-week itinerary: winter edition, the japan rail pass, tokyo in winter, day trips from tokyo in winter, hokkaido in winter, kyoto and osaka in winter, 1 – visit an onsen, 2 – slurp ramen, #3 make the most of indoor entertainment, 4 – stay in a traditional japanese house, 5 – indulge in the izakaya experience, 6 – go shopping, 7 – take part in a traditional tea ceremony.

Just to let you know… This post contains affiliate links, including Amazon Associates links. I may receive a small commission from them at no extra cost to you.

First things first, you’re probably wondering if winter is even a good time to visit Japan.

After all, even if you’re only just starting to plan your trip to Japan , you’re probably well aware of the famous cherry blossom festival .

And while taking part in the annual hanami (flower viewing) tradition should be on every traveller’s bucket list, it’s also, understandably, peak travel season in Japan.

Given that many visitors time their trip for the spring and summer seasons, places generally get busier (and more expensive!) at these times.

As much as I loved witnessing the cherry blossoms turn the streets of Kyoto pink, I still feel winter is a totally underrated time to visit Japan.

Not only will most places be quieter and have fewer crowds during the off-peak months, but winter is when Japan may just be at its most enchanting of all.

Japan in winter itinerary

When it comes to planning a Japan winter itinerary, I would largely follow this itinerary for 7 days in Japan, with a few extras added in.

Those extras would be two of my favourite places in Japan and both are better in winter: Hokkaido and the snow monkeys hot springs at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.

While both of these places can be enjoyed all year round, they really come into their own in the colder season when snow lines the ground.

The 2-week Japan itinerary below will help you see the best of Japan in winter in just a couple of weeks.

If you have more time, you could easily spend at least one more full day in each of the places included.

And if you don’t have a full two weeks to explore, I would reduce the number of city days and focus on spending a few days in Hokkaido.

While northern Japan has something to offer in every season, winter really is the best time to visit Hokkaido.

With heavy snowfall, snow festivals with snow sculptures – such as the Sapporo Snow Festival – and many of the best winter activities that Japan has to offer, it would be a shame to miss Hokkaido on a winter trip to Japan!

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo. Explore the city, including the eccentric Tokyo nightlife
  • Day 2: Explore Tokyo
  • Day 3: Day trip to Mount Fuji
  • Day 4: Take the shinkansen to Hakodate
  • Day 5: Explore Hakodate. Transfer to Sapporo for the night
  • Day 6: Take a day trip to Noboribetsu and Jigokudani “Hell Valley”
  • Day 7: Enjoy winter sports (or get cosy in one of the many ski resorts), visit seasonal events or take a day trip to a National Park
  • Day 8: Travel back to Tokyo on the shinkansen
  • Day 9: Take a day trip to see the snow monkeys (alternative: Hitachi Seaside Park)
  • Day 10: Travel to Kyoto
  • Day 11: Explore Kyoto during the day, then experience Kyoto at night
  • Day 12: Visit Nara Park
  • Day 13: Transfer to Osaka, visiting Himeji Castle on the way. Explore Osaka
  • Day 14: Osaka/departure day

If one thing becomes abundantly clear when planning a 2-week winter itinerary for Japan, it is that the Japan Rail Pass is essential.

This handy little card gives you access to the entire network of high-speed trains (and some non-high-speed local trains) across the country, making it possible to squeeze much more into your winter trip to Japan.

If you plan to visit Hokkaido – I highly recommend it! – it will also save you a small fortune on the cost of travel in Japan.

It’s best to order your pass before you leave because it’s much cheaper than buying it once you arrive. Plus, it’s also much easier.

You can buy your pass on this website (the best place to buy!) and get free delivery to almost any country in 24-48 hours. If you prefer, you can also do as I did and pick your pass up when you arrive, but you’ll save time by getting it delivered.

Where to go in Japan in winter: in detail

Unlike other countries – like Spain or parts of the United States , for example – the fact that it’s winter won’t restrict you much in Japan.

If anything, it’ll mean you get to see a really special side to this already magnificent country.

Here’s a breakdown where to go during winter in Japan, including the places included in the winter itinerary above:

Most trips to Japan will begin with at least a few days in Tokyo since most international flights land at Narita Airport (or sometimes Haneda Airport).

Although you might not be able to enjoy strolling around the city’s expansive parks as much, there won’t be many things you’ll have to skip.

Even when it’s chilly outside, you can still enjoy all the city’s highlights, including Harajuku’s shopping street and Golden Gai’s unique nightlife . In fact, Golden Gai’s tiny bars are even cosier when it’s cold outside.

You also won’t have to skip the 24-hour karaoke, 24-hour sushi trains or the many ramen houses.

Insider travel tip

If you haven’t already booked your flights, I recommend using WayAway to find the best options. Not only do they aggregate the largest number of supplies and the best prices, but you can also get 10% cashback with a WayAway Plus membership!

WayAway Plus is one of my favourite travel hacks because you can save money on almost anything. You just use their search engine to find the best deals and get up to 10% of the cost back in cold hard cash (in your Paypal account).

I love it so much that I’ve teamed up with them to give Alajode readers an exclusive discount of 55% (less than $4 per month)! Sign up using this link and enter the code “ ALAJODE ” to save on your next travel bookings.

With a destination like Japan, you could save hundreds of dollars in just one trip.

The Japan winter itinerary above includes a couple of day trips from Tokyo.

While it’s possible to spend the night at most of these destinations, there’s really no need. As long as you have a Japan Rail Pass , it’ll be just as easy – or even easier – to head back to Tokyo at night.

My one tip would be to stay as central in Tokyo as possible. Being close to a train station – especially Tokyo station – will be super helpful when it comes to making the most of your time in Japan.

Plus, since winter in Japan can get quite chilly, it will minimise the amount of time you need to spend out in the cold.

Anywhere in the Shinjuku or Shibuya area will make a great base for exploring Tokyo and beyond via rail:

Recommended sustainable Tokyo hotels:

  • Stay in the heart of the city in luxury: Imperial Hotel
  • Apartment living with home comforts: Citadines Shinjuku Apart-Hotel
  • A luxe stay with traditional touches: JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom
  • Quirky and affordable: Book and Bed
  • For unrivalled views of the city: Kimpton Shinjuku (by IHG)

While it’s not possible to hike Mount Fuji during the winter months, it’s still very possible to visit.

And it’s something you won’t want to miss!

Seeing Fuji capped in a layer of snow is a sight you’ll never forget, but is only possible for a few months of the year.

The best way to see Mt. Fuji is on a day tour such as this one that stops at several scenic spots. The bus picks up and drops off in Shinjuku, which is another reason to make it your Tokyo base.

Hotel deals in Shinjuku (updated live)

If you haven’t booked your Tokyo accommodation, these limited-time hotel deals are updated daily and many of them off free cancellation if you change your mind:

Shibu Onsen & Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

One place you won’t want to miss in Japan in winter is Shibu Onsen.

A short bus ride and hike from this small onsen town you’ll find the famous snow monkey hot springs .

Winter is also the best time to see the Japanese snow monkeys bathing in natural hot springs because the cold weather means they spend more time in the water. Which means more cuteness and even better travel photos !

The easiest way to visit is on a day trip from Tokyo. It’s a long(ish) journey, but joining an organised guided tour from Nagano station is the easiest way to take the stress out of logistics.

This one-day tour meets where the shinkansen arrives and will drop you off after, so you can make the most of your JR Pass. It also includes lunch and sake tasting!

Hitachi Seaside Park

Hitachi Seaside Park is an expansive garden that changes with the seasons.

The park has been designed so that each area has different plants and flowers in bloom at each time of year.

That means that, if you v visit in the winter, you’ll see a completely different spectacle to what you would see in the summer.

Even if it wasn’t set up to change seasonally, the design of this park is a piece of art worth seeing.

You can visit on a day trip from Tokyo , but stay overnight if you want to make the most of it and get the Japanese onsen experience .

Jigokudani snow monkey park on a Japan in winter itinerary

Outside of Tokyo, Hokkaido is a must if you’re visiting Japan in winter.

In fact, winter in Hokkaido is a pretty magical experience and probably the best time to visit Japan’s northernmost island. And since Hokkaido has a much longer winter than the rest of the country, it’s well-equipped for winter travellers.

If you’re an avid skier, you’ll love Hokkaido’s ski towns and resorts. And even if you’re not, staying at one is a great way to unwind in the Japanese mountains.

Whether you head there or not, make sure you leave time for Noboribetsu. If you only do one thing in Hokkaido during winter, take a soak in the hot springs and enjoy the incredible views.

You can visit on a day trip from Sapporo or, if you want the full onsen experience, book a night at the Noboribetsu Grand Hotel (if there are any rooms still available – it books up fast!).

Hokkaido loves winter and has several festivals celebrating the colder months of the year.

The Hokkaido Snow Festival is the most popular of all, taking place in late January and/or early February every year. If you can time your Hokkaido trip around it, it’ll almost definitely be worth it.

And if it doesn’t, you can still enjoy the Sounkyo Ice Festival which runs all the way until March.

Women in traditional Japanese kimono in Kyoto Japan

Japan’s other major cities, Osaka and Kyoto, both have their own unique charm during winter. You could visit both on a day trip or overnight adventure from Tokyo, but stay a little longer if you can.

Kyoto may just be the most photogenic city in Japan, and even more so in winter. The only thing more magical than seeing its narrow streets and towering temples is witnessing them covered in snow.

Kyoto gets incredibly busy during cherry blossom season and the warmer months, so winter is a great time to see it without the crowds. Plus, there’s even more nightlife to enjoy there.

Osaka doesn’t suffer from the freezing temperatures that other Japanese cities face during the winter, so it’s a great time to visit Japan’s second-largest metropolitan area.

You can still enjoy all the same shopping, restaurants and entertainment , but with smaller crowds than in peak season. As a foodie hotspot, Osaka is a great place to try some local delicacies in the warm .

In addition to that, Osaka also has its own share of light festivals and celebrations to enjoy throughout the winter.

Once again, I’d recommend choosing Osaka accommodation that is centrally located and/or close to a train station because travel distances can be significant.

Both Kyoto and Osaka make a great base for exploring nearby tourist attractions. Some of the best ones to explore during the Japanese winter include:

  • Himeji Castle

Kamikawa Ice Festival in Hokkaido in March

Activities to add to your Japan in winter itinerary

Wherever your trip to Japan takes you, make sure you add these unique experiences to your Japan winter itinerary.

They’re all just a little bit better when it’s cold outside!

There’s nothing like slipping into a natural hot bath when it’s freezing out. If you can, find an open-air one and enjoy the fresh surroundings.

Just make sure know the onsen rules first!

Ramen is good at any time of year, but it’s the best when it’s cold outside.

There’s nothing like feeling the warm, yummy noodle soup heat you up from the inside out.

I’m yet to try bad ramen in Japan, but the best by far was in Hokkaido. But perhaps that’s just because it was coldest there…

Japan has no shortage of indoor activities. From robot shows to karaoke contests, there’s always plenty to keep you entertained when you don’t want to be outside.

Do a little digging and you never know what you might find.

Japanese homes may just be the most logical houses on the planet.

From sliding doors that can make the room as big or as small as you like, to dining tables complete with blankets to cover your legs, there’s nowhere cosier to stay during the winter.

There are plenty of ryokan style accommodation options on Booking.com, Hotels.com and Agoda , including both hotels and homestays, and it’s well worth spending at least one night in one!

Izakaya are informal bars that serve drinks and snacks similar to tapas.

Every visitor to Japan should try to visit one of these bars, especially in the winter. When it’s cold outside, the cosy atmosphere is a great place to warm up.

Alternatively, sign up for an izakaya cooking class to learn more about Japanese culture while trying some food yourself.

Japan is home to some of the best brands on the planet.

From electronics to fashion, there’s no shortage of unique places to shop – especially in the capital city, Tokyo.

During the winter months, prices are often reduced as stores prepare for the new season, so it’s the perfect way to escape the cold and experience a new side of Japanese culture.

Tea plays an important role in Japanese culture – and is also the perfect way to warm up on a winter day.

You’ll learn all about it while sipping a warm cup of ceremony-grade matcha.

Tea ceremonies are available in Osaka, Kyoto , Tokyo and almost every big city so there’s no reason not to add one to your Japan winter itinerary!

Japan Travel Planning

Even though I found Japan surprisingly easy to travel, it still pays to be prepared.

In fact, it’s one country where you’ll really save yourself some time and money (not to mention stress!) by having as much prepped in advance as possible.

Here is a checklist of things to have prepared before you go:

Shinkansen Tickets

The Japan Rail Pass is a no-brainer for anybody who wants to see more than one part of Japan.

Booking in advance is super simple – much simpler than buying in Japan – AND comes with free 24-48 hour delivery.

I booked through JRailPass.com and can’t recommend them more for their price, efficiency and customer service.

GET YOUR TICKETS

Travel Insurance

The good news: things generally run smoothly in Japan and, when they don’t, the healthcare is some of the best in the world.

The bad news: when things don’t go to plan, it can be very expensive.

That’s why travel insurance is a must in Japan.

Since moving to Portugal, I use and recommend True Traveller because they cover a wide range of activities and circumstances.

If you’re resident outside of Europe, EKTA travel insurance offers affordable, transparent and extensive coverage all over the world.

WiFi/Sim Card

Getting a sim card in Japan is tricky (and expensive!). Unfortunately, I waited until I was there and learned the hard way, so I highly recommend arranging your WiFi situation before you go.

The best way to stay connected while travelling Japan is with an eSim that you can use right away or this local sim with unlimited data that you can pick up on arrival.

Save on flights to Japan

Did you know that you can save up to 10% on flights with a cashback service?

With WayAway Plus , you can find the cheapest flights, transfers and other travel services and receive part of your purchase back in cash. It goes straight to your Paypal account!

I use WayAway to book all my flights so that I can save extra and have secured an exclusive discount for Alajode readers to do the same.

Use this link and the code ‘ALAJODE’ to save a massive 55% on your yearly membership plan and start saving. That mean you’ll get up to 10% off all travel services for less than $4 per month. In just one trip to Japan, that could save you hundreds of dollars!

Not only does a VPN help protect you and your data while travelling, it can also help you access geo-locked content.

That’s something that comes in really handy in a place like Japan, especially if you don’t speak the local language!

NordVPN is the one I use and trust, and currently has this great deal available.

Airport Transfers

If you’ll be arriving late or staying somewhere fairly remote, consider booking an airport transfer on arrival.

This will take a whole lot of stress out of an already confusing situation when you land in Japan, especially after a long flight.

I’ve found this website has the best prices and the widest availability (sometimes in places where there aren’t even taxis!).

Bryce was born in California, but raised from the age of 3 near Seattle, Washington. He’s been living in Tokyo for about 7 years, and graduated from Temple University, Japan with degrees in economics and international business. He loves traveling of course, but also cooking, snowboarding, some video games as well. His biggest interest is songwriting/music production, more specifically electronic music… (think Skrillex, Marshmello, Daft Punk, etc.) He also has terrible humor as you’ll notice, but he hopes you’ll enjoy it!

Just like it’s a tradition in some countries to decorate your house with lights for Christmas, Japan loves to brighten the night with spectacular winter illuminations , and you can almost be certain to come across some of them if you travel the country during the colder months. There is a plethora of illuminations to choose from – especially in Tokyo – and strolling through a sea of twinkling lights is quite a magical experience.

Originally a collaboration with Italy, the Kobe L uminarie is an impressive event made up of hundreds of thousands of lights. This incredible feat between architects and electricians lights up the night and attracts millions of visitors every year. The magnificent display is one of the oldest in Japan, and also serves as a memorial for the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. If you find yourself in Kobe in early to mid December, this is a must see.

This is one of our favorite things about winter, and Japan is world-famous for its outstanding snowboarding and skiing opportunities , with plenty of options for any skill level. Not only are the slopes varied and well-kept, many ski resort towns also have a local and lively vibe. Head to Hokkaido to visit Niseko and experience Japan’s famed powder snow. If you’re in Kanto or Kansai , Hakuba or Shigakogen are prime locations for snow fun, and there are even resorts that can be visited on a day trip from Tokyo . If you’re looking for something a little off the mainstream tourist radar, some of our favorites are Nozawa Onsen and Madarao.

Shirakawago gasshozukuri

Known as the fairytale village of Gifu , this UNESCO World Heritage site is a charming little town known for its unique architecture and nostalgic atmosphere. With 100-year-old houses constructed in a distinct style known as “gassho,” the village is steeped in traditional vibes. “Gassho” means “to press one’s hands together in prayer” and refers to the slanted thatched roofs, which are built to withstand the large amount of snow that falls here every winter. There are plenty of restaurants here as well as opportunities to see the interior of the houses, making for a great winter getaway.

Head to Saitama for the Chichibu Night Festival. Featuring huge floats, music, lanterns, and locally made sake , this event is nationally recognized as one of the three great float-centered festivals, also known as hikiyama . Just a few hours from Tokyo, the event takes place every December 2nd and 3rd and is a great chance to kick off the winter in a festive way together with the locals. The large floats, weighing between 10 to 20 tons and carried around by human power, are reason enough to visit this impressive festival!

Christmas in Japan is quite different from the celebrations in western countries, as in Japan it’s a holiday spent with your better half rather than focusing on religion or on opening presents together with your family. Christmas is easily one of the biggest holidays across the world, but it certainly is enjoyed in many different ways, and Tokyo Disney Resort offers one such way to enjoy this festive time. Head to Tokyo Disneyland or Sea between November 8th and December 25th for a heavily Christmas-infused experience.

Dates: November 8 – December 25

new year countdown

New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year where the trains run all night long in Tokyo. There are many different ways to enjoy the countdown to the new year, whether it’s a traditional experience at a shrine, or a nightlife kind of celebration at a club. Either way, there is plenty of fun to be had, and no shortage of positive energy.

Due to its cold climate, Hokkaido is probably one of the most wintery places you can find in Japan. This northernmost prefecture definitely has the most snowfall, so many events are centered around that, making it the perfect place to be immersed in wintery scenery. With its vast amount of stunning nature, it’s a great place to take in breathtaking views of the all-white snowy landscapes. Apart from great skiing and snowboarding opportunities, other ways to enjoy the snow include snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Well, if not, we are sure the sight of Japan’s mouthwatering winter cuisine will do the trick! Dishes such as soups, nabe (hotpot) and sukiyaki are especially popular during this time of the year.

Snow monkeys

Shigakogen is not only an incredible snow sport destination, it’s also home to the Jigokudani Monkey Park . Japanese macaques, an endemic species of monkey, have laid claim to a hot spring tucked away in Nagano ’s mountains, and there is a place where you can observe the monkeys bathing and relaxing in the onsen . There are also a few accomodations quite close to the Jigokudani Monkey Park which offer an outdoor onsen to their guests so you can enjoy a steaming soak surrounded by heaps of snow – just like the monkeys!

Things to do in Japan in December

In December, month of annual celebrations, Japan dresses up with many nocturnal lights, pleasing both children and adults. When students finish their second term exams, Japanese companies organize their end-of-the-year party, called bonenkai , which mostly consists of gathering with colleagues in izakaya pubs to drink.

Tourism statistics

The end of the year has one of the lowest tourist attendances. Most tourists during this period are families coming to spend an enchanting and unique Christmas. You can also find groups of young adults coming to celebrate New Year ’s Eve.

Accommodation and transportation are still busy in December as Japanese people book two to three days at the end of the month to visit their families and escape from the cities to visit countryside towns and mountains .

Climate and weather

December is the first month of winter . Temperatures drop in most regions, though they are not as cold as in January or February . On average, temperatures in Tokyo and Kyoto range from 7 to 12°C (44 to 53°F). Depending on the year, the temperature can be warmer; during the day, the temperature can be around 15°C (59°F), though it can be less than 0°C (32°F) in the mornings. It can also snow, and snow has already settled in Hokkaido or the Japanese Alps by this time.

In the south, Kyushu has a warmer atmosphere that reaches temperatures above 10°C, even during the night, though it also has a higher humidity. Colder weather is usually also drier, meaning a clear blue sky. Even though there isn’t a lot of sun (about 10 hours a day), it is balanced with a stronger intensity, which allows to appreciate beautiful outdoor walks.

National public holidays

In 2019, December 23rd is not a National public holiday anymore. From 2020 on, the Birthday of the Japanese Emperor ( Tenno Tanjobi ) will be celebrated on February 23rd to comply with the new emperor Naruhito’s birthday.

However, note that many stores, restaurants, museums and gardens are closed from December 29th to January 3rd.

Top things to do

Urban tourism offers many attractions. At the beginning of the month, you can still see Japanese maple  🍁 trees, while Christmas lights are already illuminating the city at sunset. Daytime visits can easily continue into the evenings, when end-of-the-year animations cheer up visitors and Japanese people in bars and malls. Note that Christmas in Japan is a commercial celebration, and not a religious one: everything remains open on December 25th.

Here are some activities to plan in December:

Travel packing tips

We recommend bringing typical warm winter clothing to visit Japan in December. Choose a comfortable, warm and flexible coat. Scarves, hats and gloves are essential items for all travelers. You should also bring thick tights, sweaters and warm underwear.

Trains and metros, as well as stores and other indoor shopping centers are largely heated (sometimes too much), while temples remain at outdoor temperatures.

We advise bringing your own usual beauty and skincare products as they are adapted to your skin and guarantee optimal protection against the cold.

travelling to japan in december

This feast is held in Chichibu Shrine, located at Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture, which is only 90 minutes away from central Tokyo. It is organized annually from December 2nd to 3rd, and is considered one of Japan’s top three float festivals with Kyoto’s Gion Festival and Takayama Matsuri.

During the celebration, the floats are adorned with beautiful lanterns, carpets, and wood carvings. They are accompanied by flute and drum music to represent the festive mood.

Another attraction is the fireworks display that lasts for two to three hours. You will find several standing food stalls lined by the streets offering delicious items.

If you want to catch the main highlight of Chichibu Yomatsuri, then you must have to attend it on 3rd December. The floats are displayed in their relevant neighborhood and Chichibu Shrine from the afternoon to early evening.

Around 7:00 PM, they are being pulled through the streets towards the city hall. And here, the climax takes place when one after another float is pulled up the slope.

You will see fireworks displays from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM, which can be seen from many places around the town.

Go On A Osaka Shinsekai Food Tour

Discover the true Osaka by exploring the local food at Shinsekai.  The Shinsekai neighborhood of Osaka is a bustling area that combines traditional and modern food.

Here are some local food recommendations for you to try at Shinsekai: The forst stall you should try is the takoyaki (battered octopus balls) stall. After that try some genuine Osakan kitsune Udon and Japanese-style chicken wings at an Izakaya restaurant.

Then try the locally made kushikatsu, which are skewered vegetables, meats, and shellfish that have been delicately deep-fried.

Then head to smaller Japanese local restaurants for delicious nikudoufu or beef and tofu stew, yakitori, and local beverages - both alcoholic and non alcoholic.

Around here, you'll also find a restaurant that specializes in gyoza dumplings.

Then you can head to another Japanese restaurant in the same line to eat some tonpeiyaki with edamame and karaage.

After this for dessert, you can try the Japanese castella cake at the market!

For example, you may go to Yebisu Garden Place, Roppongi Hills Christmas, Meguro River Minno no Illumination, Shinjuku Southern Terrace Winter Illumination, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, Marunouchi Illumination, Odaiba Illumination, and so on.

Shinjuku Southern Terrace Winter Illumination

Most of these events run over the whole month of December, but few are held until Christmas.

So, while visiting Tokyo in December, try to attend as much illumination as possible because each one has a different vibe.

Meguro River Minno no Illumination

But, Tokyo is not the only place where you can admire this type of event.

You will find them in almost every city in Japan, such as Sapporo White Illumination (in Hokkaido), Sendai Pageant of Starlight (in Sendai), Ashikaga Flower Park (in Ashikaga), Sagamiko Illumination (in Kanagawa Prefecture), Toki no Sumika Resort (in Gotemba), Nabana no Sato (in Mie Prefecture), Festival of Lights (in Osaka), Kyoto Illumiere (in Kyoto), and many more.

Go to Shirakawago Village: A Winter Wonderland

Shirakawago Village is such a spot that knows how to mesmerize people with its magical panorama.

Shirakawago Village in winter

Although you can visit this town all year round, the winter attraction is unique and breathtaking.

From mid-December, snow starts falling around this town, and the roof of the Gassho Zukuri houses gets covered by it. And this snowfall enhances the beauty of the village to another level.

Even if the daytime panorama is stunning, I admire the night beauty most.

Night view of Shirakago village

In winter, an illumination event is held at night, making the town look straight out of a fairy movie.

The best part is, you can even stay in these old-style houses and enjoy the chilly environment coupled with a mug of hot coffee.

I think, if you want to escape the city lights, this will be a perfect hideout.

Explore Biei Town in Hokkaido

Blue Pond, which is situated in Biei Town, Hokkaido. It was made while preventing mudflow from the outburst of Mount Tokachi reaching the town.

Blue Pond in winter

It became popular as it reflects the color blue. It’s because of the presence of Hydrogen Peroxide in the water, which turns into a rainbow of different blue shades based on the season.

And the best time to witness the blue pond is during winter when it’s encircled with snow because the blue color compliments the pristine white.

Blue pond at night

It looks even more impressive after the evening as the pond is illuminated with spotlights, and the color of the water reflects on the snow.

Well, you won’t come all the way to Biei to see the blue pond only, right?

Even I will not let that happen because you can’t afford to miss the spectacular Shirahige Waterfalls. It is nestled only half an hour drive away from Biei town.

It’s rather unusual compared to other Japanese waterfalls as it flows from an underground river. The elegance of the fall becomes particularly stunning in winter when frost-covered trees and twinkling icicles flatter the blue river below.

Shirahige Waterfalls

The light-up event in the cold season makes the aura more magical, leaving you breathless.

After you experience the attraction of the whole Biei town, you may go to the Yumoto Shirogane Onsen hotel to stay overnight and enjoy a relaxing bath in the spa’s lukewarm water.

As Biei is one of the good places to go in December, I think you shouldn’t miss out on any of these stunning locations at any cost.

Try Out Ice Skating

One of the most trendy winter activities in Japan is ice skating, which can be enjoyed in the chilly environment of December.

You can choose to drop by the Fuji Q Highland amusement park situated nearby Mt. Fuji, in Fujiyoshida city. This park has one of the largest skating rinks where you can satisfy your longing for some fun ice skating.

Ice Sakting

After skating, if you want to do something crazier, then riding the roller-coaster will be a top-notch choice to feel the cool air.

Just put your hand up, and let go of all the fear!

Aside from these, there are other fun rides that you may try out too.

Now, if you want to stay within Tokyo, there are several outdoor ice skating rinks in the central area.

For example, Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu, Tokyo Midtown, Sacas Square, Tokyo Skytree Town Ice Skating Park, Futako Tamagawa Rise are some of the best ice skating rinks in Tokyo.

Ice Skating at park

You will see people of all ages here, from young couples to cute kids.

So, if you are in Japan with your sweetheart, how about going out on a romantic date . I mean, if your other half doesn’t know how to skate, you can try to hold and spend some fun and romantic moments.

Visit Kyoto to See Its Attractions

I can’t imagine someone coming to Japan and not visiting Kyoto. As it is one of the top cities of Japan explored by tourists, you will be blessed with many eye-catching sites.

For about 10 days in December, the Arashiyama Hanatouro Festival takes place in western Kyoto.

During the celebration, the Arashiyama area and the Sagano Bamboo Forest are colorfully illuminated with open-air lanterns.

Bamboo forest illumination

These lanterns brighten up the trees and bamboos of the forest, creating a fantastic night time sight.

The lights are being turned on at 5 PM and glitter until 8:30 PM. Several temples and shrines beside the light-up route also remain open for tourists to visit at night.

After wandering around the pathway of the bamboo forest, you may head to Togetsukyo Bridge to see the art display and pale blue lights shining.

Togetsukyo Bridge

Also, the Nonomiya Shrine, Okochi Sanso Villa, Jojakko-ji temple, and the Poet’s hut Rakushisha are all illuminated and waiting for your visit.

The other must-visit places of Kyoto are Gion District, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto Botanical Garden, Philosopher’s Path, Kodai-ji Temple, and many more.

Pamper Yourself with Hot Onsen Bath

Experiencing a hot onsen bath is a must-do thing in Japan for every traveler, and the best season to indulge yourself in one is the winter.

When your body is exhausted or wants to escape from the cool environment, a hot spring bath will be the perfect treat.

Onsen in Japan

As we Japanese people love this type of relaxation, there are loads of onsen scattered around all over the country to meet the need.

You can choose to feel the chill of the outside by going on an outdoor onsen like Lake Toya Onsen (in Hokkaido), Matsudai Shibatoge Onsen Unkai (in Niigata), Lake Kawaguchi Onsen (in Yamanashi), Maguse Onsen (in Nagano), and Tamatebako Onsen (in Kagoshima).

All of these hot springs have a fantastic view of mountains, and your moments will be full of satisfaction and pleasure.

Onsen surrounded by nature

By the way, are you a kinda shy person? Then maybe you don’t like the idea of going to the outdoor onsen.

In such a case, there are several indoor onsens available in Japan that you may consider going to. Even some of the hotels and ryokans have private bath hot spring facilities.

Indoor onsen

Indoor or outdoor, whatever you end up selecting, your body is gonna thank you for such a hot! hot! treatment.

Wander Around Some Christmas Market

There are a great number of things to do in Tokyo in December, and one of them is roaming around some Christmas markets.

From munching on delicious Christmas food, watching decorations of trees to purchasing cute merchandise, all are available there.

Tokyo Christmas market

And some of the significant market places in Tokyo are Roppongi Hills, Yebisu Garden Place, Tokyo Skytree, and Hibiya Park.

Meet The Cute Snow Monkeys

If you want to see the adorable Japanese monkeys taking a bath in a hot onsen, Jigokudani Monkey Park is waiting for you.

It’s not like only human beings need to be pampered in the winter temperature; animals like macaques also have the same right!

Jogokudani Monkey Park in winter

As the monkeys are wild animals, there are some rules for visitors to follow. Therefore, I advise you to check out their official site to know all the information before heading out there.

Anyway, you can easily visit the park on a day trip from Tokyo and return. Or, you may stay overnight in Nagano to see the city’s alpine beauty.

Finally, I have finished talking about where to go in Japan in December and what to do.

Now, it’s time to know other essential information associated with this topic.

Japan Weather During December

From December to February is the winter season in Japan. As December is the beginning of this season, the cold is milder than in January and February.

The temperature at the start of the month is warmer than later.

Here is a detailed chart of average temperatures according to different cities.

As mentioned, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka daily high temperatures are still relatively warm than other cities.

However, Sapporo (capital of Hokkaido) and the other northern cities are much colder, with low temperatures decreasing to minus degrees sometimes.

On the other hand, Okinawa's tropical & subtropical islands are nicely warm but not hot.

You may expect snow in Hokkaido and the northern parts of Japan, but there is a possibility of little rain in other places.

Osaka and Tokyo remain sunny in December, which makes up for the cooler environment.

Essential Travel Packing Tips for December in Japan

For your December holiday trip to Japan, here is a list of things you should pack.

1. Insulated Jacket: For visiting northern parts of Japan, you need a well-insulated Jacket. Also, on the mainland, the temperature drops after evening, so you will need them.

3. Hand gloves/ Finger Gloves: A pair of hand gloves are required in Sapporo and the other colder regions. However, if you are not comfortable holding something with gloves, you can consider taking finger gloves. It will help you hold the camera, coffee mug, and browse your smartphone.

4. Warm socks: Carry a few pairs of warm socks cause you have to take off your shoes in some places like temples & shrines and even while entering someone’s house. So, winter socks are a must-item to keep your toes warm.

5. Long-sleeved t-shirts and long pants.

6. Some light outfits: For relatively warm daytime.

7. Comfy pair of shoes: I suggest you take well worn-off shoes. It will help you not have blisters while enjoying walking tours.

8. High boots: For places where it may snow like Hokkaido.

9. A mid-heavy jacket or cardigan: Some regions don’t feel over-the-top freezy. Hence, it is wise to keep a mid-heavy jacket or cardigan with you.

10. Sunscreen: If you want to go skiing, your skin can be damaged by the sunray. Therefore, pack sunscreen to protect your pretty skin.

11. A mid-sized backpack: To carry your essential travel items while leaving your hotel room for visiting attraction points.

12. Heating pads: It’s not necessary that you have to carry heat pads all the way from your home to Japan. In our country, you can purchase them from any convenience store. And they can quickly warm up your hands and feet.

13. Don’t forget your other mandatory items: Travel documents, toothbrush, mobile charger, power bank, camera, a mini first-aid kit, necessary skincare products.

Tourist Statistics & Expected Costs When Traveling To Japan In December

Japan sees relatively lower foreign tourists in December. Most of the people who travel during this month are here to spend a delightful Christmas with their families.

You will even find groups of adults and young people coming to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Local Japanese people even take holidays at the end of the month to enjoy the last days of the year. They often visit the countryside to escape from the bustling city life.

Even the winter vacation of Japanese schools starts in late December, which causes rush in amusement parks and other entertainment locations.

That’s why I suggest you book accommodation and train tickets beforehand, if you are traveling to Japan at Christmas time and stay till New Year’s Eve.

And, of course, the hotel price during any event will raise more than usual, hence be prepared to spend a few extra bucks.

But, if you want to avoid as much crowd as possible, I recommend you to travel during early December.
