The fall supper calendar - season winding down

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

There is snow on the ground and the end of fall supper season is also in sight. With that in mind, it certainly doesn't mean there aren't any options left even with Remembrance Day being this weekend.

A Manitoba staple is the fall supper. People in the area come from far and wide to get together, enjoy some great food, and help raise money for a good cause.  Money raised is earmarked for all kinds of great causes but in some cases, it is for the hall itself, and it's usually one of their biggest fundraisers of the year!

Events like these take dozens of volunteers behind the scenes and in many cases, the food itself is the star of the show. For many others, there may be some live music, prize draws, and other attractions to go along with the delicious entrees and side dishes.

At Portageonline, we have you covered with a look at many of the events planned over the next couple of weeks. Check back on this page as we will update it as the fall supper season moves along. While some of the events below are not technically fall suppers anymore, all of them will involve a delicious meal.

Pansy kicks off fall supper season

Hey there, time traveller! This article was published 06/09/2023 (362 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

It’s a tradition as old as homesteading on the prairies. As harvest nears the end, and people begin to prepare for another long cold winter, they gather to enjoy a fall supper, featuring traditional dishes and the yield from the land around them.

Today it’s become an essential fundraiser for innumerable community halls that simply couldn’t exist without the funds that come from hungry people, eager to share in the annual tradition.

In southeast Manitoba, close to a dozen of these suppers take place, beginning in early September and going until the end of October.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

For years the Pansy Fall Supper has signaled the start to a series of suppers that take place in communities such as Gardenton, Woodridge, Middlebro, Dominion City, Friedensfeld, Emerson, Sundown, Ridgeville and Rosa.

Leanne Germain is the organizer of the Pansy event and she said it’s crucial to maintain the Pansy Hall.

“This is our major fundraiser of the year,” she said, explaining funds are used to pay for heating costs, taxes and infrastructure improvements.

Billed as a “Ukrainian smorgasbord”, the Pansy Fall Supper kicks off the season on Sunday, Sept. 10. More than 20 dishes are on the menu including the popular chicken, rice and bacon cabbage rolls, perogies and cream sauce, perishky, nalysnyky (cottage cheese crepes baked with cream and cinnamon), beetneks (bread bun wrapped with dill, onions and a beet leaf), pompushky (fluffy donut with prune filling, served warm with icing sugar) and pumpkin slice.

“Everything’s homemade on the menu. Everything’s made from scratch,” Germain said. “There are lots of volunteer hours that happen way before the actual date.”

The Pansy supper is also known for wild mushrooms, gathered by their volunteers.

“I don’t even know how many five-gallon pails I’ve picked, but I try to do at least 15 to 20 just to feed the capacity that comes here,” she said.

While close to 200 people live in the immediate Pansy area, their fall supper sees their population swell considerably.

“We are planning to prepare for 1,200 this year,” she said, adding in years gone by they’ve had as many as 1,600 guests.

Germain said fall suppers are something that brings people together.

“People want to be together,” she said. “I think families want to come and sit and enjoy a meal together and they appreciate all the hard work that we’ve put into the meal so they can just come and celebrate a time with their families.”

Pansy’s fall supper, like many others appeals to people from far outside the area, attracting buses and groups from Winnipeg and guests from across Canada.

Prices do vary between fall suppers with Pansy charging $22 per adult, $10 for children ages 7-13 and six and under free. Like most, only cash is accepted.

The Pansy Fall Supper will be served from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10 at the Pansy Hall.

A list of fall suppers in the Southeast can be found in The Carillon. To view fall supper listings from across the province search for Manitoba Fall Suppers on Facebook.

Hey there, time traveller! This article was published 16/09/2016 (2909 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

To find a fall supper this season, watch for posters on post office doors and grocery store billboards. They’re most often held in church basements and community halls in cities, towns and even the smallest hamlets. Outside Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, fall suppers are rare, so count yourself lucky to take part in this Prairie traditions. One of the best sources for planning your rural fall supper strategy is put together by Orest Kinasevych, a local blogger ( kinasevych.ca/2016/08/09/manitoba-fall-suppers-2016/ ). For city suppers, see DiningwithDonald.com .

Last year, there were no less than 80 suppers held in rural communities across the province. And that doesn’t include the dozens held in churches and community halls in cities including Winnipeg and Brandon. Or the more elaborate dinners held at FortWhyte Alive or St. Norbert Farmers’ Market.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

The menus tend to reflect the cultural make-up for the community hosting the dinner. You’ll always find perogies and cabbage rolls in Ukrainian communities (and sometimes in non-Ukrainian communities too). In Manitoba’s francophone towns, you’ll see tourtière (meat pie) and sucre à la crème (a fudge-like candy). Once in a while, you’ll see one of these events advertised as a fowl supper, a clue as to how they got their start. Across Prairie Canada, waterfowl is plentiful and the fall brings opportunities for harvest. Originally, many suppers would serve duck and goose. Today, the menu has evolved to feature turkey or chicken as the main entrée (with mashed potatoes and gravy, of course). While the birds may have changed, the side dishes continue to reflect the cultural individuality of the communities.

Fall suppers are now underway and usually run until mid November. The sweet spot of suppers seems to be the third week in October. But don’t delay. These are popular events. In Cooks Creek, the Immaculate Conception Church feeds 650 people in three seatings in the church basement. It’s always sold out.

Keep in mind that advanced tickets are mandatory. Organizers need to know how many people they will be feeding, so showing up on a whim is not an option. Make your plans in advance and look forward to a fabulous feast.

Because many fall suppers are organized by church groups, be prepared to bow your head before the meal. And if you have food allergies, it’s probably best to choose another dinner option. Ticket prices range from $10 to $20 and children are usually half price. Some dinners includes dances and silent auctions too. Second helpings are encouraged—pie for dessert is nearly mandatory.

Where to road trip around Manitoba this fall

A sign welcomes people to Boissevain, Manitoba. (Travel Manitoba)

Summer travel season may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop exploring Manitoba.

During the fall, the province has a number of top-tier road trip destinations for those who want to hike, bird watch, or enjoy the fall foliage.

CTV News Winnipeg reached out to Travel Manitoba to find some of the province's best fall road trip destinations.

“There are tons of spots around Manitoba that I would recommend for anyone looking for some fall experiences,” said Kit Muir, media content specialist with Travel Manitoba.

“Depends what you’re looking for. Obviously, we get some really great fall foliage across the province, but there’s also a lot of opportunity for things like corn mazes, pumpkin patches, some great hikes.”

Here are some of Travel Manitoba's fall road trip suggestions:

Pine Point Rapids

For those wanting to travel east of Winnipeg, Muir suggests heading to Pine Point Rapids for some hiking.

She said this area offers different lengths of hiking trails for people of all different abilities.

The hiking area along the Whiteshell River can provide striking views of waterfalls and rapids.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary

While out east, Muir also recommends visiting the Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary to get an up-close view of goose or bird migration.

The sanctuary features an interpretive program, displays, exhibits, a self-guided hiking trail, and an observation gallery.

The sanctuary is located 0.5 kilometres east of Rennie on Highway 44.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Birds Hill Provincial Park

If all you’re looking for is a day trip, Muir suggests starting your day at Birds Hill Provincial Park.

“You could do breakfast at Pineridge Hollow,” she said. “They’ve got some great shopping there, so you can start your morning a little bit more leisurely.”

Muir added that Birds Hill is also a great place to see some fall foliage while walking through the different trails.

“[It works] for different levels of accessibility as well because some of them are completely paved, which makes things easier for folks who might be using a wheelchair or mobility aids,” she said.

“Other ones will take you a little bit more through the bush, but varying in lengths as well.”

Birds Hill is located 24 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg on Highway 59.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Oak Hammock Marsh

Another popular day trip destination outside of Winnipeg is Oak Hammock Marsh, a birding hotspot in Stonewall.

Muir noted the interpretive centre is currently closed for renovations. However, programming is still taking place, especially during migration season. She added that it is a great spot to watch the geese and birds fly in.

“They’ve got hundreds of different species that come through there and thousands and thousands of birds that land there during migration season,” Muir said.

“So it’s really an incredible spot to go if you really want to experience that migration feeling of the fall.”

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Spruce Woods

Manitobans looking for a more extended road trip can head southwest to Spruce Woods Provincial Park in Carberry.

“Spruce Woods is the little desert of Manitoba,” Muir said. “It’s got these incredible sand dunes.”

Muir noted that the Spruce Woods can get very warm in the summer, making fall an ideal time to visit.

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Muir also recommends making a stop in Boissevain, a community near the North Dakota border.

“Boissevain is such a cute little town,” she said.

“You can stop and say ‘hi’ to Tommy the Turtle, who’s their roadside attraction there.”

Muir also suggests overnighting at the Turtle Mountain Adventure Huts in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.

“There’s a small hike to them, so you have to have a little bit of an adventurous spirit,” she said.

“But it’s a great spot and a great home base if you want to explore the park.”

travel manitoba fall suppers 2023

Road trip advice

In order to prepare for your road trip, CAA spokesperson Kaitlynn Furse said it’s essential to ensure your car is in good working order. That includes checking the air pressure in your tires, topping up all your fluids, bringing an emergency kit, and ensuring your lights and car battery are working.

Once you’re on the road, Furse recommends planning your routes in advance and knowing where you’ll make pit stops.

“When it comes to driving long distances, you really want to just keep an eye on that fatigue, so making sure that you’re not driving more than 800 kilometres a day, taking 15-minute breaks every two hours, and making sure that you’re keeping your gas tank at least half full,” she said.
