LAKE CHARLES, La. (August 20, 2022) - Visit Lake Charles is honored to host the Louisiana Travel Summit at the Golden Nugget, Tuesday – Thursday, Aug. 23-25. The event, presented by the Louisiana Travel Association, is expected to bring more than 500 attendees to Southwest Louisiana for the largest educational opportunity for tourism professionals in the state.

Summit attendees will experience highlights such as a keynote address from Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser on the state of the tourism industry and initiatives that the state is pursuing to bolster travel to Louisiana. The event will also feature educational speakers from across the country covering a variety of subjects including group business, product development, digital marketing, social media, public relations, leadership practices, international travel, and the championing of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tourism space.

"The travel industry has undergone an incredible transformation over the past two years with the economic impact of the Covid pandemic, but also wave after wave of challenges that have impacted particularly the state of Louisiana through natural disasters. Now more than ever, it is critical for the industry to come together to create innovative sales and marketing strategies to elevate the travel and tourism industry, which is one of the top employers in the state,” said Kyle Edmiston, president/CEO of Visit Lake Charles.

In 2021, Louisiana attracted 41 million domestic and international visitors, generating $16.8 billion in visitor spending, and there were $1.6 billion total state and local tax revenues resulting from travel and tourism activities in Louisiana. The Louisiana travel and tourism industry is the 5 th  highest employer in the state.

“Tourism has been a major economic driver for our community for many years, and we are thrilled to once again welcome industry professionals from across the state to Lake Charles for the annual Louisiana Travel Summit,” said Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter. “The Gulf Coast region of our state has experienced much devastation in recent years due to a string of natural disasters. Southwest Louisiana in particular was deeply impacted, but the resiliency of our community has been a bright light during this time, and we look forward to showcasing the progress made while sharing the great news that Southwest Louisiana is open for business!”

While summit attendees are in the Lake Area, Visit Lake Charles staff organized tours to highlight adventures in the great outdoors as well as opportunities to sample locally made products and explore attractions and local businesses that cater to the overall visitor experience in Southwest Louisiana.

Summit police officer killed, McComb officers injured in shooting. Suspect dead

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Authorities said a Summit police officer was killed and two McComb police officers were injured in a Thursday shooting in Summit.

Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said officers with the Summit Police Department were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue when a car approached and a passenger subject opened fire toward the officers, hitting and killing a Summit police officer.

Gov. Tate Reeves identified the slain officer as Troy Floyd in a social media post.

According to Martin, two additional McComb police officers had arrived at the scene and got into shootout with the suspect, who was fatally shot.

Both McComb officers received non-life-threatening injuries, Martin said.

Reeves also identified the McComb officers as Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts.

“Please join Elee and me in praying for Patrolman Floyd, for his family, his brothers and sisters in blue, and for the Summit Police Department. Please also pray for a quick recovery for Officers Harvey and Roberts,” Reeves wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Our men and women of law enforcement represent the very best of Mississippi. All of Mississippi stands with them as we honor and mourn this hero who has been taken from us too soon.”

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones took to social media Thursday to pay tribute to the fallen officer in Summit as well as the McComb officers who were wounded.

“Today, we mourn the loss of a true hero. Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community. His unwavering dedication and courage will forever be etched in our hearts. To Officer Floyd’s family, friends, and fellow officers, we stand with you during this difficult time. May his memory be a beacon of strength and inspiration. Our thoughts also go out to the two McComb police officers who were injured in the same encounter. We pray for their swift recovery and commend their bravery in the face of danger,” Jones said.

Summit is a small town of 1,460 people, around an hour and 15 minutes south of Jackson. McComb is about 5 miles south of Summit near the Louisiana state line.

China’s autonomous vehicle startup WeRide prepares for a US IPO

WeRide, a Chinese autonomous vehicle company, is officially gearing up for a U.S. public debut, over a year after China started easing its effective ban of foreign IPOs. WeRide registered 1 billion American Depository Receipts (ADRs) at a maximum price of $0.05, with the aggregate offering coming in at $50 million, per a Friday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. ADRs represent shares in a foreign company that are traded on U.S. stock exchanges, and offering them is a strong indication that WeRide is ready for a U.S. IPO.
