Deep Purple Lineup Changes: A Complete Guide
Perhaps more than any other rock band, Deep Purple proved that a group of musicians could undergo consistent and even traumatic turnover, yet still achieve remarkable success over a long span of time. We've brought all of their incarnations together in this countdown of Deep Purple Lineup Changes.
Since the release of their 1968 debut, Shades of Deep Purple , they've weathered nine different lineups – which the group dubbed "Marks" – and a couple of reunions of the Mark II quintet responsible for their most celebrated work. Drummer Ian Paice has been the lone constant.
Along the way, they shepherded the career of David Coverdale , who would later find platinum success fronting Whitesnake and discovered a brilliant, but troubled, guitarist in Tommy Bolin. But they haven't been only about finding new talent as replacement members. They also had a short spell with former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner, and Steve Morse ( Kansas , Dixie Dregs) was in the group for an impressive 28-year run. Joe Satriani even filled in as lead guitarist for a very brief stretch.
Morse's departure in 2022 ended a two-decade stretch of stability for Deep Purple. Still, the band's legend has in many ways transcended any talk of who's who. Still, who was who? Here's a primer.

More From Ultimate Classic Rock
Simon McBride is now officially Deep Purple’s full-time guitarist
McBride had been touring with the classic rock legends as a fill-in for long-serving guitarist Steve Morse, but now joins the fold as a permanent member
Deep Purple have made Simon McBride a full-time member of the band, with the Belfast-born guitarist replacing Steve Morse , who stepped down from the band in July for family reasons.
Announcing the news on the Deep Purple website, the band said that they were “thrilled” to welcome McBride into their ranks, and gave his playing the highest commendation – that he would be a worthy successor to not only Morse but to the inimitable Ritchie Blackmore .
“We are thrilled that Simon has agreed to join,” said the band. “Simon’s playing is up there with the greats. Of course, Steve can’t be replaced, the same as Ritchie, and Steve has a long legacy with Deep Purple. In Simon we have not found a replacement, but an extraordinarily talented and exciting guitarist in his own right.”
McBride was enlisted to tour with Deep Purple in March 2022 after Morse, the band’s longest-serving guitar player, stepped down temporarily to look after his wife, who has cancer. After 28 years in the band, Morse left Deep Purple permanently in July.

In their statement, the band noted the success of their summer tour, which would have figured highly in their decision.
“It is clear that Simon also holds great respect for those before him,” they said. “We are all excited for what the years to come hold for the band.”
At the start of the pandemic if someone would have said to me that I was going to be the new guitarist in Deep Purple I would have just laughed Simon McBride
This has been a hectic year for McBride. Besides touring with Deep Purple, he released his latest solo album, The Fighter, on 27 May through Ear Music. In a statement, he spoke of his delight at being asked to join the band.

“At the start of the pandemic if someone would have said to me that I was going to be the new guitarist in Deep Purple I would have just laughed, but here we are and it’s happening,” he said. “Deep Purple has a history of great guitarists so I’m very honoured to be asked to be part of that. They are all amazing musicians and more importantly, I have become very good friends with the guys so I can’t wait to continue touring and even perhaps some writing and recording.”
For Deep Purple, it is business as usual, with a calendar full of tour dates. They pick up the European leg of their tour in Spain at Sevilla’s Iconica Festival, on Saturday 24 September. See Deep Purple for dates.

DEEP PURPLE Kicks Off 2022 Tour in Hollywood, Florida: Review And Photos

If you are one of those who believe that there’s a certain age in which we are too old for rock n’ roll, any of the current members of Deep Purple would politely ask you to hold their beers. Despite being Steve Morse the only one in the current band incarnation – also dubbed as MK VIII – who hasn’t reached the seven decades of life yet, these five veterans have plenty of gas in their tanks, enough to get the audience all amped-up and fist-pumping in the air during the initial night of their now underway 2022 tour.
The iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, and for many one of the three bands in the “Holy Trinity of hard rock and heavy metal,” started off the night with palpable enthusiasm and frantic energy, not like if they were playing in the beautiful indoors state-of-the-art theater of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, but headlining a festival in front of dozens of thousands fans. Dressed in plain black Ian Gillan moved around quite a lot while singing, also interacting with his fellow band-members and the audience, a man who truly knows the game, how to work a crowd and make them sing along. How Ian Paice continues to beat the life out of his drum kit at the pace of songs composed more than 30 years ago is truly beyond my comprehension, yet he sat in his drum throne and punished the skins and cymbals with meticulous precision. Don Airey was not much visible behind his wall of keys, yet he had his time to shine during a brief yet revealing keyboard solo spot, which preceded the band’s iconic track “Perfect Strangers.” The two men with the strings, Roger Glover and Steve Morse were simply having a ball on stage, laughing at each other, and frequently coming close to one another for solo sections, reveling in their ability to jam. Glover’s bass cut through the mix like a knife, the notes providing a wrapping aura around Paice’s thunderous strokes, while Morse was simply put on fire. I’ve seen Steve playing live several times with different other bands, but the way his hands ran through the fretboard and bent the strings last night was certainly unique, nailing the guitar sections of songs that have defined many generations with utmost gusto and confidence.
The only thing anyone in attendance could complain about was the relatively short set-list, encompassing only 11 songs, and the lack of a bigger presence of tracks from their excellent last studio album “Whoosh!” Deep Purple might have released their debut album over fifty years ago, but they are not only still kicking, they're doing an absolutely no-frills, fine job of it, and most importantly: having fun doing it, endearingly waving the middle finger to Father Time.

Gig review: DEEP PURPLE – O2 Arena, London, 20 October 2022
Share the post "Gig review: DEEP PURPLE – O2 Arena, London, 20 October 2022"
Deep Purple’s distinguished career is being extended by a late period, dare I say, Purple patch. Albums seem to be coming at a swifter rate and 2020’s ‘Whoosh’ received the band’s best reviews and chart placings in years, being followed by ‘Turning To Crime’, an album of the songs that influenced them.
None of the latter made the setlist this night for what was originally scheduled to be the ‘Whoosh’ tour, and was now happening two years and two postponements later. Sadly in that time, Steve Morse first was given leave of absence then ended his 25 year plus tenure with the band to care for his ailing wife.
There was a very healthy O2 crowd with the bottom bowl full as well as a fair few blocks in the upper tier paying testament to their enduring appeal. The crowd was a mix of the boomer generation who grew up with them, occasionally accompanying younger family members they were trying to educate and those of my age, aware of their significance and growing up on Purple family tree bands but who only came to be personally acquainted with them when the Mark 2 line up reformed.
There couldn’t have been a more fitting support than Blue Oyster Cult, one of the bands that could match Purple for a half century career: indeed they opened with ‘Stairway To The Stars’ from their debut album, with some nice interplay between the now shaven headed Richie Castellano on keys and Buck Dharma on guitar before things came right up to date with ‘That Was Me’, from their newish comeback ‘The Symbol Remains’, but staying faithful to their sound.
In any BOC set, three songs in will come ‘Burning For You’ with Buck’s smooth vocals and guitar solos which included an extra flourish at the end, but worryingly a crowd of Purple diehards was rather subdued and I looked round to see if anyone was raising their glasses to the usual intro to ‘Golden Age Of Leather’- where the vocal harmonies were in fine fettle- and couldn’t see anyone doing likewise.
A second newie in ‘Train True’ was rather like those times Aerosmith do the blues before ‘E.T.I’ saw Eric Bloom emerge from the shadows he had been kept in, both with the stage lighting and comparatively few lead vocals, and Richie sang ‘Hot Rails To Hell’ with the same gusto with which he charged around the stage.
We reached their traditional closers with a fine rendition of ‘Godzilla’ yet even at the opening chords to ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’ (where Buck was as mellifluous as ever) the expected rush of people to their feet never materialised, indeed from my vantage point near the back of the front block I spotted just one fan, who swiftly gave up the ghost. A bonus though was the set was allowed to overrun its time slightly with ‘Cities On Flame With Rock’n’ Roll’ with the usual sight of band members line astern during the closing jam. It was an admirable set which deserved a more effusive audience response.
An updated ‘In Rock’ Mount Rushmore carving of the band formed the backdrop as we anticipated Deep Purple . Fortunately from the intro onwards everyone on the floor this time was to their feet and stayed so for the whole show, while as the band entered Ian Gillan, deliberately or otherwise, seemed to turn round and momentarily head back through the stage door before turning round again.
As they opened with perhaps the quintessential Purple song in ‘Highway Star’, there were two questions to ponder and the answer would determine the tone of the evening. How much of the 77 year old’s voice remains? And how would new boy Simon McBride fare as only the fourth guitarist in the bands history?
The answer to the first was really good – other than an attempt at the screams on the chorus which was the one time he was tempted out of his current range, he sounded great and barely missed a note, though his face was a study in pained concentration at times. As for the guitarist, he was fluid and effortless but with a harder edge than his predecessor, and it wasn’t just the Stratocaster he was wielding that made his style closer in spirit to peak Ritchie Blackmore.
The shuffle of ‘Pictures Of Home’ was equally excellent with the Purple trademark of being able to single out the musical excellence of each of their players and a swapping of solos between Don Airey and Simon, then a pair of songs from Whoosh illustrated their late career renaissance Ian holding his arms round Simon and bassist Roger Glover during ‘No Need to Shout’ and ‘Nothing at All’ with some very fresh sounding organ and guitar interplay.
After the usual dedication to Jon Lord, and an intro from Simon where his extended note holding was worthy of fellow countryman Gary Moore, ‘Uncommon Man’ saw Don pay tribute to his maestro predecessor with some parping keyboards. The jamming on ‘Lazy’ also sounded fresh including Ian playing harmonica, and preceded by a homily from him unlike his usual whimsical intros, his singing on ‘When A Blind Man Cries’ was immaculate and you could feel the warmth towards him. He also sounded great on ‘Anya’, perhaps the surprise of the night and a rare song from that overlooked period when the post reunion Purple went for a more mainstream commercial sound.
Many of us took a breather to sit down during Don’s classically inspired solo slot, with the few bars of ‘Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner’ which is a trademark when they play shows in the capital, leading into the classic ‘Perfect Strangers’ though I felt this was one of the few songs where Simon didn’t really make his own mark.
It was also a sign we were moving into the traditional closing phase of a Purple show, continuing with ‘Space Truckin’, Roger grinning youthfully as he charged across the stage pointing his bass at the crowd.
Thankfully, rather than the tired extended medley of famous riffs that has preceded it for some.years, Simon contented himself with a single chord to break into a ‘Smoke On The Water’ faithful to the original. But given how iconic the song is, I was disappointed the atmosphere was a tad flat with few in the seats to their feet, and not many people around me even singing along.
In a fairly short set, there was time for the usual two encores – ‘Hush’ with extended organ and guitar battle and, preceded by a bass solo from Roger, ‘Black Night’ again dragged out with audience participation and a confident looking Simon teasing the crowd. A minor gripe was that these last five songs have been exactly the same for many tours now and a predictable second half setlist might be ripe for shaking up.
Yet this gig was a triumph on nearly every level. Simon McBride has fitted in seamlessly to this indomitable machine of seasoned players, and his guitar playing has added a sharper edge, and it was a revelation how good Ian Gillan sounded. In the autumn of their career there may be even be an argument for saying this legendary band are as good, or maybe even better, than ever.

Deep Purple are an English rock band, formed in Hertford, Hertfordshire in 1968, and active since their reformation in 1984.
Over the course of a career that’s lasted almost forty years - and that’s not allowing for an eight-year break after an initial split in 1976 - Deep Purple have cemented their position as one of the most influential rock and roll bands in the history of the genre. Furthermore, they’re considered genuine pioneers of both hard rock and heavy metal after having moved away from initial roots in progressive rock, and have the commercial clout to back up their towering status within the rock community; they’ve sold in excess of one hundred million albums internationally. The current lineup features just one original member, Ian Paice on drums, although frontman Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both joined the band shortly after they began, in 1969. Steve Morse, on guitar, and Don Airey on keys round out the five-piece as they stand today, and they continue to tour and record; their latest album, “Now What?!”, was released in April of 2013, and flirted with progressive metal.
That album might not have been as successful as the records that defined them back in their seventies heyday - March 1972’s “Machine Head”, which features their signature song “Smoke on the Water”, frequently features on countdowns of the greatest rock records ever - but they still pack out arenas the world over; their status as bona fide rock legends has long since been secure.
Live reviews
Perhaps it’s because their one and only split, in 1984, seems so long ago now, or perhaps because they lacked an iconic character of Ozzy Osbourne or Jimmy Page’s standing, but Deep Purple are the one member of the ‘unholy trinity,’ alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, who seem to have the lowest public profile. Sure, they still tour arenas, but Sabbath have been playing stadiums this summer, and as for Zeppelin, the number of applications for tickets for their one-off reunion at the O2 stretched into seven figures. Quietly, though - as unsuitable a phrasing as that is - the biggest band ever to come out of Hertford are continuing to do quite nicely for themselves. Their most recent UK jaunt had them mixing things up, playing some arenas and some theatres, and doing their best to avoid accusations that they’re trading off of former glories; of the seventeen tracks making the setlist each night, seven were plucked from last year’s 'Now What?!' record. The classics made the cut, too, of course, as did all the trappings of the classic rock show - extensive soloing and plentiful crowd participation included. Stadium tours any time soon? Probably not, but if we’re talking about the preservation of their legacy, Deep Purple are certainly doing it justice.

Wonderfull concert by Amsterdam Ziggo Dome last Night of 2 june 2017.
Whole members of Deep Purple are playing very well ! Roger Clover, Don Airy, Steve Morse , Ian Paice and off course Ian Gillian himself . I was dissopointed not playing "Child in Time" . Everybody was expected this song. I was very happy to see this guys.
One of my favorite leadguitar Ritchie Blackmore was not present. Well Deep Purple , thank you all , to coming to Holland.
I was proud to see you again and my evening was best performance!
Thank you Deep Purple keep at going.
Greetings from Horn ( little village in Netherlands)

Deep Purple exploded onto the stage at the Fox Theater in Detroit with their opening song,"Highway Star!" From then on they gave a blistering and thunderous performance!
The visual effects and lighting were spectacular! Their stage presence was commanding and presentation very tight and spot on!
I have seen Deep Purple multiple times over the years. I must say this show found them in their finest form!
The crowd was ravenous to eat up every note! Detroit is the best place in the world for a concert!
This tour is title,"The Long Goodbye."
I sincerely hope this isn't so. Hopefully in the future they will tour as,"Hello Again!"
It was my first time seeing Deep Purple and they did not disappoint. The band was extremely tight and witnessing Steve Morse shred the guitar was worth the price of admission alone. They ripped through two hours of classics including a couple of new tunes off their latest album which was just as strong. Don't miss what may be one of your last chances to see these guys in such strong form. At my show in South Florida, Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden came out to see the band and introduced them. Their influence can be heard throughout the Rock world and they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Besides being a fan of Deep Purple I have to criticize the show. Sorry! Mainly the sound technician did a bad work. Sound was way too loud that it was overlapping. Sometimes it was difficult to recognize the song and hear a melody. Members of the band, the musicians, worked hard and well, unfortunately, Ian Gillan has to retire. It was hard to hear him singing, he often was disappearing from stage. That, to say, in my opinion, he used to be "the Nail" of the shows with his high notes.
I was expecting more pleasant evening from the band I like.
seen DEEP PURPLE with edgar winter warm up, Alice Cooper warm up (why they did this is ridiculous !Deep Purple on a farewell tour played 7 songs off their latest album? they had an organ solo. Ian Gillian spent half the show going bejind the wall probably to get high. no encore song. Alice Cooper should have played the whole 3 hours because he was the best. always a good show. Edgar winter smoked Deep Purple. they need Ritchie blackmore back and david coverdale. Glover and pace the only stars. deep purple needs to retire for good.
Smashing gig!
Suppirt act Cats In Space were a great surprise with their pop rock style that was heavier than expected.
Europe were really good. Joey Tempest was his usual 80s flamboyant self, and the sound was cracking!
Depp Purple were superb. This line-up is tight and settled, with some excellent playing in the original Purple vein. Ian Gillan looked like he'd just wandered in off his sofa, he was so chilled.
All in all, a superb gig that crossed a massive item off my own bucket list
Well it was 47 years since I first saw them and 32 years since I sat in a bin bag in a field at Knebworth. They blew me and my son-in-law away last night.
The new albums songs from Infinite were fantastic especially The Surprising and Birds of Prey interspersed with some old favourites such as Fireball, Perfect Strangers and Smoke on the Water.
Bit disappointed no Highway Star.
As much as I loved it I think it's time to call it quits for playing live - go out on a high with your new album.
I didn't know what to expect. I have seen many bands the last few years, but I had forgotten what good musicians sound like. I remember now after seeing Deep Purple last night. What a fantastic display of musicianship by each member. At some point each of them wee featured and that's why we go! Performers who really love to perform. You don't get that much anymore. And the songs.......well they were awesome as well. I recommend highly if you get the opportunity.
What an incredible show. Starlight Theatre in Kansas City is a beautiful venue and it was a beautiful night. Judas Priest played before Deep Purple and blew the (non-existent) roof off the place. Their experience and chops were on full display. Deep Purple headlined and played lots of the crowd favorites. They may be old and the lineups may have changed, but if you grew up listening to this stuff, don't miss out on seeing them now.

Morse 's hiatus from the classic rock icons was announced on March 31. In a statement, he said that his wife Janine is battling cancer and added that he hopes he can rejoin PURPLE on tour "after she gets a clean bill of health."
Added the rest of the band: "All of our thoughts are with Janine during her fight against cancer and also with Steve while he supports his wife at a very difficult time. We hope that Steve will be able to join us back on the road later this year."
McBride said: "I'm deeply honored to be asked to stand-in for Steve and play for such an iconic rock band like DEEP PURPLE . They are amazing musicians and amazing people… I'm very excited to get out and play all those iconic songs and rock the stage with such legends. My thoughts are with Steve and Janine and their family."
Morse effectively took over Ritchie Blackmore 's DEEP PURPLE slot in 1994 and has since been in the group longer than Ritchie .
In a 1997 interview, Blackmore stated about Morse : "I'm just glad they [ DEEP PURPLE ] found a guitar player to carry on because I thought I was going to be shackled to this band for the rest of my life. It was like a ball-and-chain thing, and luckily, they said, 'Well, we found someone.' 'Thank God, I can get out!'
"I haven't listened much [to DEEP PURPLE 's recent recordings]. I just know that Steve Morse [is a] brilliant player. I remember Steve Morse with the DIXIE DREGS ; they're fantastic."
Morse 's solo career has encompassed rock, country, funk, jazz, classical and fusion. Having started playing guitar around the age of 11, he later on attended University of Miami's School of Music, where he studied classical guitar and jazz. A "guitarist's guitarist", he was voted "Best Overall Guitarist" in the Guitar Player Readers' Poll for five consecutive years, before being removed from eligibility to open the award to other musicians, and being inducted into their Gallery Of Greats. His work has received seven Grammy Award nominations, and he has appeared on over 200 albums.
DEEP PURPLE 's latest album, "Turning To Crime" , came out in November via earMUSIC . The LP contains DEEP PURPLE 's versions of great rock classics and musical jewels — including songs originally recorded by Bob Dylan , FLEETWOOD MAC , Bob Seger , CREAM and THE YARDBIRDS — carefully chosen by each member of the band.

Fronted by the legendary Ian Gillan, whose vocals have defined generations and accompanied by the masterful bassist Roger Glover, the powerhouse drummer Ian Paice, the maestro on keyboards Don Airey, and the sensational guitarist Simon McBride, Deep Purple guarantees a musical journey like no other. Since joining the band in 2022, Simon McBride has already played to Deep Purple audiences totalling more than half a million people.
Selling over 100 million records and laying the ground for hard rock and metal, the band continue to tour arenas the world over and release hit albums. Their last studio album, 2020’s ‘Whoosh!’ was their highest charting in 46 years, making Number 4 in UK Album charts. Combining ‘Now WHAT?!’ (2013) and ‘Infinite’ (2017) and “Whoosh” (2020), Deep Purple returned as one of the best-selling hard rock bands around, with sales exceeding one million copies.

Produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin, (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Kiss), Infinite featured 10 new tracks recorded with no musical boundaries in the spirit of the 70s. The metal pioneers have released five studio albums since 1996, augmented by an abundance of solo work and special projects from members Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse and Don Airey. Judas Priest’s latest studio album, Firepower, was released March 9, 2017, via Epic Records. How to Watch ‘WrestleMania 40’ Night 1 and 2: Full Match Card, Where to Stream
- Author: Dan Gartland
In this story:
Can Cody Rhodes finally finish his story? He’ll have to get through The Rock first.
Rhodes’s pursuit of WWE’s undisputed universal championship has taken longer than most fans expected. From the moment he left the company he helped found, AEW, and returned to WWE in 2022, Rhodes made it clear that his goal was to win the title that his father, the great Dusty Rhodes, never got to hold. But there were plenty of bumps in the road. Just two months after his return, Rhodes tore a pectoral muscle on the eve of his Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins. Rhodes wrestled through the injury against Rollins, with the entire right side of his chest covered in a deep purple bruise , but he then underwent surgery to repair the injury and was sidelined for more than six months.
Rhodes made his return in January 2023, winning the Royal Rumble to earn a championship match at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles. The stage was set for him to dethrone Roman Reigns and hoist that elusive championship. But he didn’t. In a result that shocked almost everyone, Reigns won the match and retained the title.
Now Rhodes has another chance to vanquish Reigns—but there’s one more hurdle in the way. Rhodes and Reigns will square off in the main event of the second night of WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia on Sunday. But first, they’ll meet in a tag team match on Saturday. Rhodes will team with Rollins and Reigns will team with The Rock. If Rhodes’s team wins on Saturday, all members of Reigns’s Bloodline faction will be banned from ringside on Sunday. If Reigns’s team wins, Sunday’s match will be contested under “Bloodline rules” (meaning there are no rules).
In addition to the two matches featuring Rhodes and Reigns, there are 11 other bouts scheduled for the two-night event. Highlights include brothers Jey and Jimmy Uso squaring off against each other, a six-team ladder match for the tag team championship, the return of Logan Paul and an opportunity for Gunther to extend his record-long reign with the intercontinental championship.
Night 1 card
- Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill and Naomi vs. Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai, Asuka and Kairi Sane)
- Latino World Order (Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee) vs. Santos Escobar and "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio
- Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso
- Undisputed tag team championship match (six-team ladder match): The Judgment Day (Finn Bálor and Damian Priest) (c) vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. The Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth) vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. A-Town Down Under (Austin Theory and Grayson Waller) vs. New Catch Republic (Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate)
- Women’s world championship match: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch
- Intercontinental championship match: Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn
- Main event: The Bloodline (The Rock and Roman Reigns) vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth “Freakin” Rollins
Night 2 card
- LA Knight vs. AJ Styles
- Six-man tag team Philadelphia street fight: The Pride (Bobby Lashley, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) (with B-Fab) vs. The Final Testament (Karrion Kross, Akam and Rezar) (with Scarlett and Paul Ellering)
- United States championship match: Logan Paul (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens
- Women’s championship match: Iyo Sky (c) vs. Bayley
- World heavyweight championship match: Seth “Freakin” Rollins (c) vs. Drew McIntyre
- Undisputed WWE universal championship match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
How to watch
Coverage of both nights will begin at 7 p.m. ET, with the main card beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The only way to watch in the United States is on Peacock. Everywhere else in the world, the event will stream on the WWE Network.
The WrestleMania Countdown preshow will begin at 5 p.m. ET both nights, featuring commentary from CM Punk, Pat McAfee, Big E, Michael Cole, Wade Barrett and Jackie Redmond.
