In Ruaha National Park , Nyerere National Park and Katavi National Park , some camps have licenses for night safaris .

These night drives usually start around 9pm, after dinner, and last around 2-3 hours. The main goal of a night safari is to see nocturnal animals such as genet, white-tailed mongoose, bat-eared foxes, hyenas, or even the aardwolf amongst others, who are difficult to spot during the day.

Night safari are led by experienced and trained camp guides accompanied by a park ranger.

This is a fantastic 2-day Tanzania safari to Arusha National Park, located about 30 km south-west of Arusha town. The park is approximately a 60 minutes’ drive from Arusha town. Once at the park we enjoy several activities available such as walking, canoeing and game drives. This is a short Tanzania luxury Wildlife Safari Holiday that begins & ends in Arusha. The tour visits the Manyara Ranch Conservancy – a 35000-acre wilderness between Tarangire & Manyara parks. Leaving Arusha, the drive to the conservancy takes only 1 hour 30 minutes. Arriving at the scenic Manyara Ranch Conservancy we embark on an extensive game drive. This 2-day Tanzania short Safari starts in the town of Arusha, gateway to the well-loved Northern Tanzanian Safari Circuit. The tour combines two Tanzania safari gems – Lake Manyara Park and Tarangire National Park both located in the Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. Our first game viewing destination is Lake Manyara National Park where we take a mid-morning game viewing drive and later pause for lunch. Lake Manyara Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons and big herds of elephants as well as some elusive leopards. 2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Tour – Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Short Trek/ Hike

This 2-day Kilimanjaro hike follows the Marangu Route, the oldest and most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro. After pick up from Arusha city you, will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1840m). Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro National Park, we complete the necessary paperwork before starting our hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro. Walking through the rain-forest we keep a lookout for black and white colobus monkeys, as well as other wild animals. After a 4-hour walk, we reach our first overnight stop, the Mandara Hut (2670m). Here we rest before visiting Maundi Crater with our mountain guide. From the crater, we enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior, before returning to Mandara Hut for dinner and our overnight stay. The following day continuing our Marangu hike up Kilimanjaro, towards Horombo huts encampment on a route that will take about 3 to 4 hours up to get amazing views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo. After getting magnificent views of the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, head back down to Mandara Huts for lunch then back into Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Tour – Climbing Mount Meru Short Trek/ Hike

This is a short and rewarding 2-day Hiking Trek up Mount Meru in Tanzania second highest mountain, without reaching the summit. Mt. Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park and it is 50 miles west of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Begining from Arusha, head to Arusha National Park in the morning, to trek up Mount Meru. The hike starts from Momella Gate (1500 meters/ 4200 Feet) where you meet your armed ranger. The climb starts at around 1000 hours and along the way you are likely to see buffalo, bushbucks, giraffes, warthogs, and zebras. Porters are not mandatory and one can carry as much of your own gear as you want. The hike takes about 3.5 hours to the Miriakamba Hut where you spend a night. On the second day we continue our hike up Meru, hiking a little further with your guide, where you have a clear view of Meru crater and the cliffs below the summit. We then start the descent taking two to three hours to arrive at the gate where you say farewell to your hiking crew and transfer back to Arusha where the tour ends.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Cultural Tour – Hadzabe Bushmen & Datoga Tribes (Driving) From Arusha

This is a 2 day Tanzania cultural safari that takes you right off the beaten track into the remote Yaeda Valley, located to the southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater to explore the cultures of the Hadzabe Bushmen & Datoga tribes. Beginning in Arusha, the tour travels to Lake Eyasi, the native homeland of the Hadzabe (Hadza), one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa with approximately 1,300 tribe members. Spend the afternoon learning more from your guide, gaining an understanding of the Hadzabe people, their traditions and skills and also the wider area. On day two, you will be accompanied by an expert guide and go hunting with Hadzabe for an hour or 2. You will walk, run and crawl through bushes looking in the shrubs for birds, antelopes, birds, mongooses and larger herbivores. In the late morning you will visit then the Datoga tribe. These pastoralists are also skilled blacksmiths. They collect metal scrap, which they cleverly process into bracelets, arrowheads and knives. You will also visit one of the huts in the village. Night game drive in Serengeti national park is one of the best dream experience any one can ever wish to do second to the Balloon safari . It’s unfortunate that Night game drive in Serengeti national park are not allowed at all and if one is got your ae penalized for that.

The most common seen wildlife at night are the nocturnal animals like Bush Babies which got their name from their carrying style like newly born babies, Civets which is in the group of cats but like moving and hunting mostly at night, Aardvarks among others, birds like wood owls, night Jars and others. There is a lot of action at night which can be experienced when these animals go for hunting and a majority like fresh meat and blood, you will be hearing songs of the night birds as they compete from different angles of Serengeti national park .

The Night game drive the park though not permitted can be done at the outskirts of Serengeti national park and they are mostly organized by the world-class lodges around the park. These game drives takes only two to three hours starting from 8 pm to around 11 pm but within few kilometers away from the lodge compound. The Night game drive in Serengeti national park are also done from the outside part of the park around Ikoma area but has much to offer since most animals move around the area.

These lodges have taken the advantage that the park is not fenced hence no boundaries and this has helped them satisfy the needs of their guests, Night game drive in the park cannot be booked in advance instead it’s an arrangement the guest or tour guide can arrange with the camp on that very day. These game drives are always determined by the weather of the day, if the rain has rained too much they will not arrange and they are mostly done during dry season of the year from June to October

During the Night game drive in Serengeti national park, the bushes are generally different with reflection of the Stars and moon, seeing the eyes of the animals reflect the car light Gold or reflector. Night game drives can be done in Lake Manyara as one of the few only parks in Tanzania that the park Authorities allow the night game drives. The activity gives one the life time experience the only complete experience of the park as one gets chance to explore both day and night seeing different animal species.

Lake Manyara night game drives start after your dinner mostly from 8:00pm with briefing from the park rangers who will be your guide, park regulations clearly read to the guests on the “dos” and “don’ts” at the time of the game drive. Guests are supposed to give maximum cooperation during this night game drive since that is the calmest time of the nature, most of the day time animals are resting and relaxing while the nocturnal animals are on search for food and water.

The lake Manyara has the best moon reflecting moments in Africa, the game drive lasts for only 2 hours and starts from the main gate where your driver will drop and wait for you from after the game drive. Sometimes they use Lake Manyara Serena Hotel as an assembly point, for pick up and drop then the driver guide of the guest picks you up from there.

The game drive is much rewarding since you are led by the team of experts only rangers of the park which has experience, they know all the corners of the park, where to find which animal. The most common animals are Shy Genet, civet, Porcupines, lions, Hippos, Bush babies, Aardvarks, leopards and others.

In order for the guest to do a night game drive in Lake Manyara the following must be observed:

• The guest must pay the park entry fee at the day time which expires in 24 hours’ time
• The guest pays an extra fee for the night game drive which caters for ranger and car for the game drive please note that only the park safari vans are allowed to be used during the game drive
• Guests are collected from the main get after clearing with the park authorities and nor driver guide is allowed to go for the night game drive unless he pays.

In case of any other arrangement for pick up, the guests can be picked up from Lake Manyara Serena lodge and be brought back to the same point after the game drive.

A Guide to Northern Tanzania & The Great Migration

The Selous Game Reserve is a huge dry season park offering boating, walking safaris and fly-camping with excellent possibilities of seeing Africa's wild dogs.

Ruaha National Park is a beautiful red-earth park where you can also enjoy walking, fly-camping, super prides of lions and huge buffalo herds. Ruaha is home to 10% of the whole world’s lions, so to say the wildlife here is not as prominent as in the north could be a mistake!

The west comprises of Katavi and Mahale which are expensive to get to, but because of their relative inaccessibility offer a simply magical experience alone in the wilderness, where you can trek chimps in the Mahale Mountains and see some of Tanzania’s most dramatic safari scenes in the depths of Katavi’s harsh dry season. Southern safari itineraries are usually made up of either three of four nights in both The Selous and Ruaha. For those who want a shorter Tanzania safari tour and more time to enjoy the sand beaches, then the Selous for four nights can be an easy and dependable option. However, we would recommend trying to combine both if budget allows, as this will provide you with diverse landscapes, wildlife and a range of safari experiences. Very few travellers head to Katavi and Mahale because the flights are simply very expensive, and the few lodges available there are too. If you did go though on the Western tours in Tanzania, you can either fly from Arusha via the Serengeti or from Dar, but via a night or two in Ruaha. Flights only operate a few days a week though, so the west is usually only doable for those with a big budget who are very set on visiting it and who will revolve their entire holiday around doing so.

The Great Migration Africa

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a spectacular event where 2 million grazers circle the Serengeti all year round in search for fresh pastures. Some months are better than others to see the herds. The best times are when they are the most concentrated in certain areas: From July – October the herds are crossing the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. This is where you get those dramatic Attenborough-esque scenes of wildebeest hurtling themselves into crocodile infested waters. February is when the calving season is in full swing and this is the best time to see the herds in their full glory as they gather in their thousands on the endless plains of the south. February is the only time of year you are guaranteed to see the herds if you stay where they are predicted to be, as they never fail to gather in the Ndutu plains at this time of year. We would advise visiting the Serengeti at these times if the Migration is on your bucket list and you're wanting a peak-season luxury safari in Tanzania. However, the Migration is a complex and unpredictable event. It is important to know the pros and cons for each time of year, which you can find in our month-by-month migration blogs on our chart to the right. 

Luxury Tanzania Safaris Accommodation

The  Serengeti National Park  (which borders the Masai Mara in Kenya) is world-class and home to  The Great Wildebeest Migration  as well as the biggest concentration of predators on the planet. We would recommend spending a minimum of three nights during your Tanzania safari tour in the Serengeti – there is so much wildlife to see and areas to cover, that it would be a shame to travel all the way there and stay for any less. 

The Ngorongoro Crater  has a huge amount of the big 5 in a unique and dramatic setting. Surrounding the crater, the  Ngorongoro Highlands  is home to colourful Masai culture and rolling coffee farms. We usually only recommend one big game drive into the crater, as it is small so one day is enough. You can either stay on the crater rim, or in the Ngorongoro Highlands a night either side of your game drive. Many people do visit the Crater on their tours in Tanzania, so it does however get very busy during the high season.

Tarangire National Park  is another option for amazing game viewing. Night drives, fantastic views and a colossal number of elephants all addd up to an amazing safai experience. However, it is more of an "add-on" park to the main northern circuit of the crater and Serengeti. It can be visited for a few nights en route to the crater, if you have ample time and money. 

Lake Manyara  is another smaller park with flamingos, fantastic land-birdlife and some truly beautiful spots for safari. It can be seen in an afternoon rather than as the focus of a trip as it is small. Most people who drive to the crater go via Lake Manyara for a few hours to tick it off the list. 

The Cost of Tanzania Safaris Tours

The Best Time for a Safari in Tanzania

Generally, Tanzania is best to visit in the dry-season months of July – October when the parks are dry and wildlife viewing is dramatic, easy and action packed.  However, there are pros and cons of every time of year so it is definitely worth calling to discuss. For example, June and October/November are marvellous shoulder season months, where you get amazing wildlife but for a third of the price than in the peak season with special offers and low season rates.

Northern Tanzania Ngorongoro is amazing year round – it is not very big, and so the animals can’t widely disperse when there is plentiful grass and water. However in  The Serengeti , February is the very best time to see the Great Migration as the wildebeest congregate in the southern plains in their thousands for calving season. Southern Tanzania The parks of Southern Tanzania are classically dry season parks so definitely best from July - October. Outside these months, the widllife can be tricker to find than in Northern Tanzania.   As Ruaha and The Selous are relatively low land compared to northern Tanzania, they are affected a bit more by the rains. The Selous is closed from mid-March to the end of May, as the camps are inaccessible when it has been very wet. Ruaha is also mostly closed at this time of year too.  Both October and November can be very hot in the Selous which is worth noting if you are not a fan of high temperatures.

Tanzania: Safari & Beach - Zanzibar

Tanzania is probably one of the best and easiest safari countries to combine the beach with. Our favourite beach hideaway is Zanzibar , due to its diversity in lodgings, activities and not to mention its beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. With plenty of internal flights from all the national parks, Zanzibar is accessible with short flights.

The only place worth mentioning on the mainland coast is the beautiful Ras Kutani . It is a place for sheer relaxation, and a personal, romantic and intimate beach getaway experience.

In general, the ideal time for a Tanzania safari is during the dry season, which typically extends from June to October. During this period, wildlife congregates around water sources, creating optimal conditions for game viewing.

It's worth noting that this period coincides with the high season for safaris in Tanzania. The country's major parks, such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, are bustling with activity.

If you'd prefer to a void the high-season crowds , we recommend visiting between January and March when the weather is generally mild and dry, and most of the safari crowds are notably absent.

When to go on a Tanzania safari

In recent years, Tanzania’s climate has become less predictable, but historically a broad-brush view of the seasons here has been:

July to October, the ‘ peak season ’, usually sees warm and dry days, with high game concentrations around water sources, including the famously spectacular river crossings of wildebeest in the northern Serengeti.

During November and December, the ‘ short rains ’, wildlife sightings remain plentiful, but expect sporadic showers. Migratory birds arrive as residents don breeding plumage and prices reduce from peak levels.

Tanzania’s ‘ short dry season ’, January to mid-March, can be hot and humid, particularly at the coast. The wildlife is generally scattered. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest are calving across the short-grass plains of the south.

The frequent downpours of the ‘ long rains ’ last from about mid-March to early June. Some safari camps close, but lower prices and fewer visitors do attract the cognoscenti.

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

• Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
• Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
• A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
• The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
• Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

• Hot and dry weather.
• Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
• Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
• Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
• The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

• Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
• Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
• Parks are quiet and rates are low.
• Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
• March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

• Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
• Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
• Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
• Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

• Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
• Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
• The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
• Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
• The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

• A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
• The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
• Wildlife may be dispersed still.
• Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

• Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
• Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
• The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
• Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
• To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

• Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
• General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
• An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
• Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
• Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

• Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
• Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
• The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
• Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
• Prices remain high.

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

• Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
• Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
• Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

• Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
• Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
• Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
• The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

• Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
• Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
• Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
• Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
• The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

Southern Tanzania ’s two main parks are far apart. The flat Nyerere National Park , dominated by many waterways of the mighty Rufiji River, contrasts with the huge, rolling plateau of Ruaha National Park .

More remote still, in western Tanzania , lie the plains of Katavi National Park and the mountainous sloes of the tropical forests in Mahale Mountains , on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Naona Moru showed us the most incredible hospitality we have ever experienced anywhere — bar none, full stop — making our four nights here a dream come true. We had the camp to ourselves for three of the four nights and every single person went the extra mile (or 10,000 miles!) to make us have the greatest honeymoon experience imaginable.

Stayed at camp for two nights and loved it the tents are spacious clean and comfortable the staff friendly and attentive and we made some great friends amongst them. The food was outstanding warm fresh bread rolls and the most amazing yoghurt desert. Just loved this place should have stayed longer. We left the tent flaps open and saw hackles in the bush of a night. Safe, friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend

We had a great two night stay at this camp, the staff were super friendly and the food was great. We spent early evening with a good glass of wine watching the wildlife go by whilst sitting by the fire pit, perfect! The tents were lovely, though the mattress was a little hard for my taste. Still everything else was pretty great and we would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed at Naona Moru camp for 2 nights as part of a week-long safari. What a wonderful surprise when we drove up after a long day of game drive to this modern tented safari camp – simply suberb! The staff greeted us with hot towels and fresh juice. Our tent had 2 double beds and a large bathroom and the food was amazing. You also get free laundry service which was greatly needed after being on the dusty safari roads. This unique camp added so much to our experience!

We just stayed 2 nights at this camp. Out of the 10 tents we were the only ones there. We were pampered. The staff was very friendly & attentive. We were fed very well. Sitting around the fire pit in the evening was very enjoyable. If you are a lite sleeper this isn’t the place for you. Many animal noises heard through the night. Wildebeest migration through the camp in the middle of the night.

A truly classical safari that has you flying between some luxurious and unique lodges in Northern Tanzania’s most iconic national parks. Perfect for those travellers wanting to minimize the long road transfers and maximize their comfort.

This safari starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will catch a flight to Tarangire National Park. You’ll spend 2 nights in the more remote southern Tarangire where you can enjoy game drives, night drives and fascinating walking safaris in the baobab filled landscape. During the dry season Tarangire is also host to an incredible density of wildlife, particularly elephants and buffaloes! During the summer months Tarangire is home to an incredible 550 bird species making it a fantastic stay for the avid birders. After Tarangire you’ll catch a flight over Lake Manyara to the airstrip, where your guide will collect and transfer you to the lodge. Spend 2 nights in the famous Ngorongoro highlands with an included full daytrip in the Ngorongoro Crater for chances of viewing the Big 5 and a traditional Maasai experience around the luxurious lodge. After the Ngorongoro highlands, you’ll head back to Manyara airstrip for another flight to central Serengeti. Spending a full 3 nights in the Serengeti ensures an incredible wildlife experience as you go in search of the famous predators in the region. You’re also within close proximity of the iconic granite Moru kopjies where the rare black rhinos can be found making this a true Big 5 destination. After your time in the Serengeti, a final flight will take you back to the international airport for onward connections.

The Tanzania Classic North safari is for high-end travellers or honeymooners looking for a fly-in-fly-out safari experience that visits all the iconic national parks of northern Tanzania. For an extension consider adding a few nights on Zanzibar Island . It is important to note that Dunia camp is a fixed camp in central Serengeti so access to the annual wildebeest migration is not always guaranteed.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: arrival.

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will proceed to the Coastal Aviation desk for your light-aircraft flight to Tarangire National Park, just 20-minutes away (15 kg luggage limit per person; soft bags required for all flights on this itinerary). Your guide from Little Oliver’s will meet you here and game drive you back to camp, where you can settle in and enjoy some lunch. Relax during the heat of the day before afternoon tea is served, and then go out on an afternoon game drive to explore this varied and wildlife-rich park. The large elephant herds in the drier months are a real highlight here, but the wildlife and birdlife are excellent year-round.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

Set off this morning on a guided walking safari, learning to look for signs of wildlife nearby, from bird calls to tracks in the earth. You can approach smaller creatures such as warthogs, small antelope species and birdlife, all of which are less skittish when approached on foot compared to a vehicle. Return to camp for lunch and a rest during the heat of the day. After tea and cake, head out on a late-afternoon game drive, stopping for sundowner drinks in a scenic spot. The adventure continues with a night game drive, seeking out nocturnal species such as mongoose and nightjars, as well as predators such as lions on the move. Return to camp for a late dinner.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Highlands

Depart after a leisurely breakfast for the airstrip. From here, you will fly over Lake Manyara to the Manyara Airstrip. A guide from The Highlands will drive you through coffee plantations towards the Ngorongoro Crater, a journey of 3 hours to reach the property, enjoying a packed lunch on the way. Stop at the viewpoint overlooking the crater to soak in the spectacular landscape and continue your drive around the rim until you reach the Olmoti Crater, where you will stay for the next two nights. If you feel like stretching your legs, you can opt for a guided walk from the camp up to the rim of Olmoti Crater, passing through dense forest and waterfalls on the way.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater

After an early breakfast, depart with your guide for the Ngorongoro Crater, a drive of around an hour until you reach the descent road. Spend the morning game-driving on the crater floor in search of the varied wildlife that lives here. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch during the heat of the day in a shady spot before driving back to The Highlands , where you can relax a little. In the late afternoon, a guide will take you to one of the nearby Maasai villages, where you can learn more about this rich culture and take part in their afternoon activities, which often include rounding up cattle into the boma for the night.

Day 5: Central Serengeti

Depart by road for the Manyara Airstrip, 3 hours away, where you will catch a flight to the central Serengeti, just 45-minutes away. A guide from Dunia will meet you at the airstrip and game drive you back to camp, stopping at any wildlife sightings along the way. Settle into your tent before going on an afternoon game drive to fully explore your final national park. The Serengeti is impressive in terms of both the diversity and density of wildlife found here, so there is plenty to discover each day. Return to camp in the early evening for drinks around the campfire and dinner.

Day 6 & 7: Central Serengeti

Safari activities at Dunia take place in the early morning and late afternoon, when the wildlife is most active. You will explore with expert guides on game drives, looking for the big cats that have made the Serengeti famous as well as hippos wallowing in muddy pools and giraffe browsing the fresh shoots of an acacia tree. In between, you will return to camp for a delicious lunch, and to have a siesta or catch up on a good book. Evenings are spent sharing stories of your day’s adventures with other guests around the dinner table.

Day 8: Departure

Enjoy a final breakfast in camp before a short drive to the airstrip for your late-morning flight back to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha . The flight will likely stop a couple of times on the way to drop off/pick up passengers, and the total journey will be approximately two and a half hours. You will land at the international airport so you can simply collect your luggage and check-in for your international flight home.

Arrival and Departure Airport: Kilimanjaro International Airport(JRO)

Day 1 Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha City

Your international flight will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, home to the ‘The Roof of Africa’, Mount Kilimanjaro. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage, you’ll be met by your driver who will be waiting for you at arrivals.

You will drive to your accommodation in Arusha, and on a clear day you may have views of Kilimanjaro en route. After a long day travelling you may want to rest, but if you want to keep yourself busy until the evening, we can arrange a city tour or other experiences dependent on your interests.

Day 2 Tarangire National Park

Today you’ll be heading out to your first Tanzania national park the beautiful Tarangire, often a favorite park among guides due to its size and remoteness, particularly in the southern section. The park is known for the large numbers of elephant that congregate here.

There are substantial populations of wildebeest, zebra, impala, giraffe, eland and buffalo as well, and even a few localized and unusual species including the gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. The primary landscape is dry, open woodland scattered with hundreds of Africa’s prehistoric ‘Trees of Life’, the baobab tree. You’ll explore the park in your private vehicle, stopping for a picnic lunch during your game drive, and eventually head to your camp for the evening.

Day 3 Ngorongoro Crater

Early morning you drive from Karatu to the Ngorongoro. Upon arrival at Ngorongoro, you will start descending into the crater. This collapsed volcano is the main feature of the area and creates a unique ecosystem with a wide variety of vegetation. Enjoy the beautiful colours of the landscapes and the diversity of animals.

The crater is home to the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa and is choked with elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos and even the rare black rhino. This is one of the best places to spot all of the Big Five. The views from the crater rim over the crater floor are incredible. Because of its natural beauty, the Ngorongoro Crater is chosen as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.

There is a range of activities to do in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, like visiting a Maasai village.  You can spend up to six hours in the crater before heading back to your reserved accommodation

Day 4 Serengeti National Park

Your drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti will wind you through wide green hills and across flat lowlands. The land stretches to the horizon in all directions, interrupted only by small dusty towns and earthy round Maasai huts. Once you’ve crossed into the Serengeti, you’ll be on a game drive as you make your way toward camp.

The southern section of the park is covered with flat or gently rolling grasslands and occasionally dotted with rock kopjes, home to good populations of resident game. Big cats love to have a good vantage point and the kopjes provide that. Massive herds of wildebeest call this southern section home when they’re birthing before moving farther north. The Serengeti is home to a variety of landscapes, and what’s around you will depend on where you’re staying in the park.

Day 5 Full Day Serengeti National Park

Today you will continue your African safari experience to one of the country’s biggest draws: the Serengeti National Park. The endless plains and abundance of wildlife that call the Serengeti home are unsurpassed. The Wildebeest Migration with more than a million wildebeest is probably the highlight of the Serengeti. It is a true spectacle and impressive to watch millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles thunder across the endless plains of the Serengeti.

Together with your private guide, you will be looking for the herds across the plains. Apart from the migratory animals, you will also get to see lots of other animals, like lions, cheetahs, leopards, and many more. Expect to be impressed by the natural beauty of Africa’s most famous park.

If you like to watch wildlife from another perspective, we recommend you go on a balloon safari. It is an amazing experience to drift silently above the plains with herds of wildlife.

Day 6 Fly from Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti to Arusha Airport

A 5 day Tanzania Safari is the perfect amount of time to experience the highlights of the great northern Tanzania circuit.

On this particular Tanzania Safari tour that I’ve written about in this article, you’ll visit three of the most famous national parks including Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park.

The seasonal sight of thousands of wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, lions, and many more African animals crossing the grassland savannah is something to behold. It’s one of Africa’s natural wonders, not to mention the beautiful landscapes in each of the national parks.

This itinerary will guide you as you make plans for a trip of a lifetime, so be sure to read until the very end!

Here is a quick overview of the 5 day safari in Tanzania:

• Day 0 – Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) in Tanzania and overnight stay at Mrimba Palm Hotel in Arusha
• Day 1 – Safari tour in Tarangire National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Eileen’s Tree Lodge in Karatu
• Day 2 – Safari tour in Ngorongoro Crater National Park then drive to Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp Serengeti
• Day 3 – Full day game drive in Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp
• Day 4 – Full day game drive in Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp
• Day 5 – Morning game drive in Serengeti National Park on route back to Arusha arriving late afternoon to conclude the tour

DAY 0 – ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA

Day 0 is an arrival day to Tanzania and your tour guide will be waiting to pick you up at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), ready to transfer you and the other guests to Arusha. Be sure to notify Samora Explorers of your flight details so they know exactly when you’ll be landing.

The journey time from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha takes 1-hour depending on traffic and you’ll be checking into the beautiful Mrimba Palm Hotel for an overnight stay.

Once all guests have arrived, your tour guide will give a briefing in the evening about the complete 5 day itinerary.

You’ll have dinner at a local restaurant or at the hotel before getting some shut-eye to prepare yourself for the best Tanzania safari!

DAY 1 – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Found on the northern plains of the country, Tarangire National Park gets its name from the mighty Tarangire River that crosses through the beautiful landscape. Spanning 2,600 square kilometers, it’s home to the largest elephant population in the whole of Tanzania, as well as 500 bird species. Safe to say this is a good place to start your trip!

If you visit during the dry season that runs from June through October you will have the opportunity to watch herds of elephants as big as 300 family members digging on the dry river bed searching for underground streams of water.

Elephants are not the only residents here. Expect to find heads of zebra, migratory wildebeest, elands, gazelles, impala, kudu, black rhinos, and more.

Not to worry, the little guys are also there such as mongooses that make use of old anthills as their homes. Or spectacular tree-climbing African pythons and their dazzling scales.

After an awesome wildlife safari in Tarangire National Park, you’ll drive to Karatu, which is located just outside Ngorongoro National Park, and the journey takes roughly 2.5 hours. You’ll check into the beautiful Eileen’s Tree Lodge for one night, and a delicious buffet dinner is included.

DAY 2 – NGORONGORO CRATER

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll check out and depart from the hotel early morning to make your way to Ngorongoro National Park and its world-renowned crater.

This national park is a unique hotspot in all of Africa due to the giant crater that was carved out of the earth about 2 million years ago. The Ngorongoro volcano had a violent explosion and later collapsed on itself.

Today the crater forms a bowl of 20 kilometers (12,5 miles) wide with sides up to 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep. Filled with folklore and tales, it’s interestingly named “The Garden of Eden” because of its breathtaking scenery.

As you approach the entry point, you can enjoy phenomenal views from the rim before dropping down into the crater to begin your half-day game drive.

This will be one of the best days on Safari in Tanzania as you’ll highly likely be able to spot all of the BIG 5 – the Black Rhino, African Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, and Elephant – all roaming around in their raw beauty.

Bird species in Ngorongoro National Park are also in abundance and you’ll have the opportunity to spot Pink Flamingoes, Eccentric Ostriches, the White Pelican, Hornbills, Crested Francolins, Guinea Fowl, and much more.

The drive from Ngorongoro National Park to Serengeti National Park takes about three hours and there will be a short game drive on the way to Into Wild Africa Safari Camp which is located in the middle of the Serengeti.

DAY 3 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

You’ll start the 3rd day with breakfast at that safari camp, or if you wish to start your full-day game drive at sunrise, the camp will prepare breakfast boxes to take with you.

Serengeti National Park covers an area of about 14,763 square kilometers and is internationally recognized. Founded in 1951, it was named after the Serengeti Plains, which means ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language.

This name is suitable for what your eyes will behold when you get to see and explore Serengeti National Park. It’s a park that can be visited all year round due to its balanced ecosystem.

On your first full-day game drive, you’ll be able to view a large variety of animals, including giraffes, lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, leopards, cheetahs, gazelles, impalas, and even crocodiles.

At midday, or whenever you are hungry, your guide will gladly pull up under the shade of a tree and prepare lunch. Don’t venture too far from the vehicle though – remember you are in the African wilderness!

That afternoon, settle in and get cozy at Into Wild Africa Camp. Enjoy an unbeatable Serengeti sunset around the campfire before indulging in a delicious meal in the dinner tent.

Relax and unwind in the comfort of your safari tent and prepare for another epsafari the following day.

DAY 4 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Another full-day game drive in the Serengeti to find lions, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, hippos, leopards, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, hyenas, and many bird species and reptiles throughout the day.

While the game drive only is included in the Samora Explorers tour, there are other optional activities to book such as:

• Birding safari – Just like Ngorongoro National Park, Serengeti National Park is spot on for bird lovers. Get to see over 500 Birding species and try your hand at spotting all that you find.
• Hot air balloon – Besides being in the Serengeti, why not experience it from a birds-eye view? Scenic and calm are words that come to mind.
• Maasai rock paintings – The markings of earlier civilizations are not to be missed. The history of the natives can be seen and studied on rocks that can be described to be as old as time.

In the afternoon, head back to Into Wild Africa Camp for another beautiful night under the stars and get ready for the last day of your 5 day Tanzania safari.

DAY 5 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK & DEPARTURE

Saying goodbye is never easy, however, the last part of your journey can be made memorable with breakfast in the morning, listening to the birds and watching the mellow colors of the sunrise.

After checking out of the safari camp, enjoy a few hours of game drive in the morning before you depart Serengeti to head back to Arusha with a journey time of around 5-6 hours.

You’ll also get to visit the Serengeti Visitor Center to make use of its facilities and understand more about the park and its history.

As you won’t arrive back in Arusha till the late afternoon, it’s best to have a late-night departure flight booked (ideally departing after 9 pm as it’s a further one-hour drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport).

Alternatively, you can spend one more night in Arusha, check out the city, and leave the following day. Whichever option you choose, an airport drop-off is included.

BEST TIME TO DO A SAFARI IN TANZANIA

Tanzania is a year-round tourist destination however the best time to visit Tanzania for a safari is during the dry season, which runs from June to October.

This is when animals congregate around watering holes and rivers, making for better game viewing.

Don’t be fooled by the dry season though. You’ll want to be prepared for cooler temperatures – especially at night – and occasional rains. Be sure to pack the appropriate clothing to keep warm and dry during your trip.
