Tanzania is located in East Africa and is home to some of Africa’s most pristine wildlife sanctuaries, the second highest mountain in the world - Kilimanjaro, a massive volcanic crater, and gorgeous white sand beaches with warm turquoise waters. The plains of the Serengeti National Park offer an exhilarating safari experience with phenomenal game viewing opportunities which includes the “Great Mammal Migration” and the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), whilst the tropical island of Zanzibar is a marine wonderland with its untouched coral reefs and gorgeous climate. Tanzania has a strong cultural heritage and offers visitors the rare opportunity in northern Tanzania of meeting with the fascinating Maasai people who have a great understanding of how to live in semi-arid and arid lands.

The question of when is the best time to visit Tanzania is best determined by what you wish to experience.  

Tanzania has a temperate climate with relatively comfortable temperatures all year round. The main variation to the impact of the temperature is the humidity and annual rains.

Traditionally, the annual rainfall arrives around the beginning of April and continues until the end of June. The second, slightly less strong, rainy period, is from the beginning of November (around 2 weeks later on Zanzibar) to the middle of December, roughly speaking.

Although the Serengeti offers fantastic game viewing all year round, there are particular months that are deemed as the best time to visit the park. The dry season months of June through October are the most popular time of the year for a safari in Tanzania, with animals congregating near water sources and the vegetation thining; improving the visibility of animals. If you aspire to see the annual Mammal Migration , then it is best to travel during the months of June and July . In the months of December to March , the migration herds are located down in the very southern region of the park. April and May is a good time to book a safari in the northern parks of Tanzania, as the game is still good, crowds are minimal, and the prices are at the lowest of the year.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

Mount Kilimanjaro is best climbed either between July and October or January to March .

Also on the coast is the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, where Swahili culture meets a modern tropical metropolis. In the north, Olduvai Gorge is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world; an asset in understanding early human evolution. Olduvai is next to Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic valley that’s a major wildlife conservation and safari area, inhabited by the indigenous Maasai, who still pursue traditional tribal practices. Lake Tanganyika is the location of Jane Goodall’s primate research center, where visitors can track chimpanzees along the shoreline.

Serengeti National Park

Located in northern Tanzania, this World Heritage Site and most celebrated wilderness area known as the Serengeti is a photographer and filmmakers dream, especially during the massive annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. The crocodile infested Grumeti River is a top attraction during this remarkable event; with hungry Nile crocodiles awaiting their opportunity to strike as the herds frantically cross the river. The reserve has an abundance of wildlife with the numbers estimated to be well over 3 million. There is even an active volcano within the Serengeti National Park;  the only volcano to eject carbonatite lavas that turn white when exposed to air.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 miles) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The crater is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). Approximately 25,000 large animals, including the Big 5, live in the crater. The crater also has one of the densest known population of East African lions which are particularly strong in the Ndutu Lake area. It is important to note however that the Ngorongoro Crater does get very busy so we do recommend a two-night stay here.

Tarangire National Park

Often regarded as Tanzania’s most underrated national park, Tarangire is a must on a northern circuit itinerary. It is Africa’s best-kept secret, boasting a variety of wildlife and diverse landscapes. The name originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The river is the primary source of freshwater for wild animals in the Tarangire ecosystem during the annual dry season (July to October). Visitors to the park in the dry season can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Tarangire is notorious for its large elephant population - the largest in Tanzania. During the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen digging in the dry riverbed of the Tarangire River looking for underground streams.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a smaller park located both in Arusha Region and Manyara Region of Tanzania. The park is strikingly diverse with barren lands, forest, and a salt lake. Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for the flamingos that inhabit the lake. During the wet season, they can be found at the edges of the lake in flocks of thousands but they are not so present during the dry season. More than 400 species of birds inhabit the park making this the ideal location for bird watching. Leopards, East African lions, cheetahs, elephants, hippopotami, several antelope and many more wild animals inhabit this park and many can be seen throughout the year.

Located below Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, the charming city of Arusha is a gateway to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. As it rests at the base of the twin peaks, Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, the city serves as an ideal base for hikers eager to conquer Africa’s highest mountain. Arusha is known for its vibrant nightlife, Masai Market, National Natural History Museum, and traditional Tanzanian cuisine.

Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and second highest in Tanzania, standing at 4 566 meters. The dormant stratovolcano is located 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro and is often considered by hikers as a warm-up trek for Kilimanjaro. The fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, as well as monkeys, giraffe, bushbuck and leopards.

Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park covers an area of 186 749 acres, protecting the largest free-standing volcanic mass in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, with its peak at 5 895 meters. The mountain is encircled by mountain forest. Numerous mammals, many of them endangered species, live in the park. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a lifelong dream for many, with an estimated 25 000 people attempting the climb each year. In the lower-lying areas such as the forest zone there are a multitude of birds, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and olive baboons. Civets, leopards, mongooses, elephants and Abbott’s duikers also live in the mountain’s forest, but sightings are extremely rare. The alpine and arctic zones are too harsh for any animals to survive comfortably.

Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam, meaning “haven of peace” is Tanzania’s largest and busiest port city.

Loved amongst travelers for its seaside setting and eclectic vibe, Dar es Salaam bustles with fish markets, dhow boats, museums and striking architecture. Dar es Salaam is a diverse city with a mix of African, Arabic, and Indian cultures. Popular day trips include the beautiful Mbudya Island where you can bask on the island's white-sand beaches, snorkel, and swim in the turquoise waters. Bongoyo Island is a much-loved island getaway, lying off the Msasani Peninsula, about four miles north of the city. Located about six kilometers north of the city on the Msasani Peninsula, is the popular Coco Beach, where you can savor street food and listen to live music. The Oyster Bay Shopping Center here is a popular attraction, with farmers markets, art galleries, and boutique shops.

Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake and the second oldest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Tanganyika is home to Nile crocodiles, various turtle species, the Storms water cobra, and more than 80 species of non-cichlid fish of which about 60% of these are endemic. Most visitors choose to base themselves in the lovely lakeside town of Kigoma which serves as a gateway to the two rainforest reserves bordering the lake: Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park, both of which offer unforgettable up-close chimpanzee encounters and an astonishing variety of birdlife.

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional behind the lens, this itinerary is a must for keen wildlife photographers. It centers around the Great Migration , a magnificent spectacle of life and death involving hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra (and the predators that follow in their wake). The time and location of the migration changes every year, and is therefore hard to predict. For this reason, the tour focuses on two different areas of the Serengeti to maximize your chance of being in the right place at the right time.

You’ll be based first in the Namiri Plains, a remote private concession in the east-central Serengeti that has only recently become accessible to visitors. Shivers sped down my spine as a hyena crept into our Jeep’s headlights in the night. Then another hyena joined, and further back, we saw a third and fourth set of eyes. We heard piercing cackles, and our safari guide Kebby Arabang, resident tour director for Abercrombie & Kent in Botswana, told us it was a hyena calling for back up in a stand-off with a lion.

Most wildlife travelers dream about visiting Kenya’s  Masai Mara National Reserve , but there’s a lesser-known and significantly less crowded safari escape just northwest of it: the 35,000-acre  Olare Motorogi Conservancy . The getaway, known for its action-packed lion viewing, protects the ecosystem’s animals and supports the local Masai people via community-based safari tourism. Tanzania’s safari and beach areas fall naturally into four broad groups.

Tanzania's ‘Northern Circuit’ is the term which defines the areas of the sprawling Serengeti , the stunning landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater , Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks – the most famous safaris areas in Tanzania.

For a quieter experience, Tanzania’s southern parks offer unspoiled wilderness areas dotted with a smaller number of safari camps. The lakes and waterways of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) offer magical boating safaris, while Ruaha ’s rugged terrain is excellent for walking safaris is home to a very strong population of lions.

Nearer to Africa’s heart, Western Tanzania is harder to reach, so few visitors come, but two parks are amazing. When to go on a Tanzania safari

In recent years, Tanzania’s climate has become less predictable, but historically a broad-brush view of the seasons here has been:

July to October, the ‘ peak season ’, usually sees warm and dry days, with high game concentrations around water sources, including the famously spectacular river crossings of wildebeest in the northern Serengeti.

During November and December, the ‘ short rains ’, wildlife sightings remain plentiful, but expect sporadic showers. Migratory birds arrive as residents don breeding plumage and prices reduce from peak levels.

Tanzania’s ‘ short dry season ’, January to mid-March, can be hot and humid, particularly at the coast. The wildlife is generally scattered. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest are calving across the short-grass plains of the south.

The frequent downpours of the ‘ long rains ’ last from about mid-March to early June. Some safari camps close, but lower prices and fewer visitors do attract the cognoscenti.

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

• A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
• The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

• Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
• Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

• Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
• Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
• Parks are quiet and rates are low.
• Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
• March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

• Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
• Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
• Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
• Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

• Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
• Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
• The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
• Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
• The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

• A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
• The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
• Wildlife may be dispersed still.
• Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

• Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
• Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
• The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
• Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
• To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

• Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
• General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
• An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
• Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
• Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

• Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
• Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
• The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
• Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
• Prices remain high.

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

• Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
• Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
• Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

• Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
• Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
• Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.

In northern Tanzania , the remarkable wildlife sanctuary of the Ngorongoro Crater rises beside a huge crack in the earth’s crust, the Rift Valley Escarpment, which splits the landscape and bounds the soda-lakes of Lake Manyara and Lake Natron . Nearby, at Olduvai Gorge , the same geology protects some of the earliest hominin fossils ever discovered.

Southern Tanzania ’s two main parks are far apart. The flat Nyerere National Park , dominated by many waterways of the mighty Rufiji River, contrasts with the huge, rolling plateau of Ruaha National Park .

More remote still, in western Tanzania , lie the plains of Katavi National Park and the mountainous sloes of the tropical forests in Mahale Mountains , on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Off Tanzania’s tropical Indian Ocean coastline lie the ‘spice islands’ of Zanzibar and Pemba ; the laid-back Mafia Island , and many tiny satellites, like the private islands of Fanjove , Chumbe and Mnemba .

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Ngorongoro Crater (Driving) From Arusha

Starting and ending in Arusha or Moshi, Tanzania, this affordable 2-Day Ngorongoro Crater Road Safari begins with a drive to the to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, hosting Africa’s Big Five and an abundance of other wildlife. The Ngorongoro lies 75 miles (120 km) west of the town of Arusha and the drive takes around 4 hours to the Crater Once on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, we stop to enjoy the crater views and then continue on your way to your lodge/ camp to arrive in time for lunch. After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. The following day after breakfast we descend the steep crater walls to explore this wilderness teeming with wildlife. The crater is home to Lion, Leopard, elephants, monkeys, hyena, jackal and herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo along with approximately 400 species of bird. We stop for lunch at a picnic site on the floor of the crater and later continue with a game drive. After our thorough exploration of Ngorongoro, we ascend the crater walls and make our way back to Arusha or Moshi, where our memorable wildlife safari ends.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Tarangire National Park (Driving) From Arusha

This is a wonderful 2-day road safari to one of Tanzania’s premier destination – Tarangire National Park, a lovely, quiet park in the northern Tanzania Safari Circuit famous for its baobabs & massive elephant herds. Our 2-day wildlife adventure begins as you set off southwest to Tarangire located 118 km (75 miles) from Arusha. We have lunch and spend the afternoon enjoying superb game viewing in the Park followed by a night at one of the many lodges and safari camps in Tarangire National Park. Camps & lodges include Tarangire Safari Lodge, Little Oliver's Camp, Tarangire Sopa Lodge & Tarangire Kuro Treetops Lodge. Best known for its elephant herds (main attraction with up to 3,000) and tree-climbing lions, Tarangire is home to wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, gerenuk, dwarf mongoose, Oryx, buffalo, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu and eland. Other wildlife inhabiting the game park include lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as tree climbing pythons and with 550 species of bird on the tick list, it’s a fabulous destination for bird watchers. The following day you enjoy a morning enjoy a game drive before returning back to Arusha where the safari comes to an end.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Saadani National Park (Driving) From Dar-es-salaam

Designed to deliver a classic ‘beach and bush’ experience, this 2-day Tanzania road safari takes you to Saadani National Park where can view animals basking along the Indian Ocean shores in Tanzania. The tour travels to Saadani National Park located 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Dar es Salaam. Saadani is home to about 30 species of large mammals including Elephant, Leopard, Lion & Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Waterbuck, Impala, Hartebeest, Kudu, Eland, Sable Antelope, Baboon, and Monkeys. Enjoy your picnic lunch amongst fantastic hippo pods and crocodiles lounging on the banks of the Wami river. In the afternoon we embark on a wildlife viewing drive till sunset. At the end of an action-packed day of game viewing, we head to our comfortable lodge/ camp. The following morning, we explore the spectacular landscapes of Saadani National Park in search of wildlife and birds which you didn’t see on the first day. A boat safari on the Wami River is a true highlight where you get a chance of sighting Hippo, Crocodile, Later we depart for Dar es Salaam making our way back to where our memorable adventure began.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Tours – Ukerewe Island Lake Victoria From Mwanza Town

A fantastic 2-day holiday from Mwanza to Ukerewe Island – on a chain of islands in Tanzania and the largest island in Lake Victoria. Ukerewe island is situated in the Ukerewe District, nearly 50 km north of Mwanza to which it is linked by ferry, and it takes 3 to 4 hours to travel. The main attraction of Ukerewe is the authentic experience of the deeply rural life. Spend the afternoon in the company of an experienced local guide, who will show you around the island and get entertain with fascinating stories of its residents and famous chiefs. You will get a feel of the life of Lake people and depending on your interests you may enjoy the following activities; cycling, climb Rutare hill, visit to local a school, visit the Chief’s Palace, Dancing Stone of Ukara Island, Rubya Forest and enjoy special cultural tours. Sleeping options on Ukerewe Island include Monarch beach resort, La Bima Hotel, Holiday Motel and Kondeni Hotel. The following morning spend some time enjoying one of the activities available on offer and in the early afternoon return to Mwanza Town by ferry.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Mikumi National Park (Driving) From Dar-es-salaam

This 2-day Tanzania short safari by road is an incredible wildlife tour to Mikumi National Park, a less-crowded Southern Game Park of Tanzania. The journey begins with a drive to Mikumi National Park located 280 kilometers (roughly 4-hour drive) away from the largest Tanzania city Dar es Salaam. Mikumi borders the African largest national reserve that is Selous Game Reserve in the South. The afternoon is dedicated to 4×4 game drives in Mikumi National Park where we are likely to spot elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, warthog and an assortment of antelopes roaming around. Predators found here include wild dogs, lions, jackals, hyenas and even leopards. We may also see giraffes, hippos, baboons and vervet monkeys. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania’s important birding areas, with over 400 species recorded here. One of our best Tanzania short tours, this 2-day safari combines one of Tanzania’s top northern Game Parks – Tarangire National Park with Arusha National Park. After pick up from your hotel in Arusha, we travel southwest to Tarangire National Park, our first safari destination on the Northern Tanzania Circuit. Tarangire is one of East Africa’s best places to see elephants up close, hosting about 4000 elephants. Wildlife includes giraffes, buffalo, lion, leopard, baboon and a variety of antelopes and gazelle species. We spend a night at one of the beautifully lodge/ camp in the park. Tarangire accommodation options include Tarangire Sopa Lodge, Little Oliver’s Camp, Sanctuary Swala Camp, Tarangire River Camp and Tarangire Safari Lodge. 2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater (Driving) From Arusha

This 2-day short Tanzania safari holiday explores two of the Top Tanzania safari destinations in the Northern Circuit – Lake Manyara National Park where lions climb trees and baboon troops thrive and the Ngorongoro Crater home to one of the highest concentrations of African wildlife. Beginning and ending in Arusha, the tour heads to Lake Manyara National Park located 130 km away (3 hours’ drive). The park is also home to large troops of big baboons, monkey, jackal, mongoose, hyena, hyrax, cheetah, hippo, warthog, giraffe duiker, waterbuck and impala. Over 400 bird species are found here, which includes many thousands of lesser flamingo’s and greater flamingos. 2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Safari – Serengeti National Park (Driving) From Mwanza City

This is a fabulous 2-day Tanzania road safari that takes you to Serengeti National Park. Beginning from Mwanza, we travel to the Serengeti, situated in north-west Tanzania. Serengeti’s Ndabaki Gate is about 140 km from Mwanza and gives direct access to the Western Corridor. We Embark on 4×4 game drive starting from Ndabaka gate on the western corridor where the landscape is more wooded and it is common to see giraffe, elephants, zebra, impala, topi, ostrich, hippos, waterbuck, and many smaller animals. Then we drive to Central Serengeti where we find big cats such as lions, leopards, and cheetah. Spend a night at a lodge in Central Serengeti. The following day we spend a half day enjoying superb game viewing in the Serengeti. This is a fantastic 2-day Tanzania safari to Arusha National Park, located about 30 km south-west of Arusha town. The park is approximately a 60 minutes’ drive from Arusha town. Once at the park we enjoy several activities available such as walking, canoeing and game drives. Begin with a walking safari under the guidance of a park ranger and visit the impressive waterfall in the heart of the park, Ngurdoto Crater and lake Momella, where thousands of pink flamingos can be seen. During the hike, you may see animals, such as giraffes, monkeys, buffaloes, zebras, warthog and blue monkeys. Bird life includes trogons, starlings, turacos and thousands of flamingos. This unique 2-day Tanzania road safari combines Arusha National Park that offers a classical wildlife viewing with traditional cultural encounters at “Olpopongi “Maasai Cultural Village & Museum. There are a range of activities to do in Arusha National Park which include walking safaris, canoeing safaris & game drives. First, travel to Arusha National Park located about 30km south-west of Arusha town (45 minutes’ drive) for a safari wildlife experience. Mammal species include elephants, buffalo, various primates, giraffes, and leopards. Hiking is allowed if accompanied by an armed guard and the climb up Mount Meru is superb, often giving the best views available of Mount Kilimanjaro. The following morning you leave Arusha National Park and drive for 2-hour (85 km’s) journey to “Olpopongi “Maasai Cultural Village & Museum located in Maasai-land West Kilimanjaro. 2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Luxury Safari – Manyara Ranch Conservancy (Driving) From Arusha

This is a short Tanzania luxury Wildlife Safari Holiday that begins & ends in Arusha. The tour visits the Manyara Ranch Conservancy – a 35000-acre wilderness between Tarangire & Manyara parks. Leaving Arusha, the drive to the conservancy takes only 1 hour 30 minutes. Arriving at the scenic Manyara Ranch Conservancy we embark on an extensive game drive. Aardvark, Baboon, Buffalo, Cheetah, Eland, Giraffe, Hippo, Hyena, Leopard, Lion, Oryx, Vervet Monkey, Wild Dog, and Wildebeest amongst others are just some of the more than 50 species of mammals seen year-round. Apart from mammals, around 350 species of birds have so far been identified. 2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Cultural Tour – Materuni Village Moshi (Chagga Tribe, Coffee Farm Tour & Waterfall Hike)

This 2-day short Tanzania tour offers an amazing experience with Materuni community and includes a village walk, guided waterfall hike, coffee tour, local primary school visit, Chagga traditional dance demonstration, local Chagga Food, banana beer experience and a homestay. Depart from Arusha and travel to Materuni village located in the Uru area, home of Chagga people. Once at the village and in the company of a well-educated and professional tour guide, the tour begins with a visit to Materuni waterfalls, located a 40-minute walk away. Enjoy some local Chagga food lunch and after experience the traditional coffee processing technique and participate in the process of making organic Materuni coffee. This 2-day Tanzania short Safari starts in the town of Arusha, gateway to the well-loved Northern Tanzanian Safari Circuit. The tour combines two Tanzania safari gems – Lake Manyara Park and Tarangire National Park both located in the Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. Our first game viewing destination is Lake Manyara National Park where we take a mid-morning game viewing drive and later pause for lunch. Lake Manyara Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons and big herds of elephants as well as some elusive leopards. We spend the afternoon enjoying superb game viewing in Lake Manyara and in the late afternoon, leave the park, and spend the night at a camp/ lodge near the small village Mto wa Mbu. On day two, we depart from Mto wa Mbu village and admiring the scenic landscapes of Tanzania as we travel Tarangire National Park. The park is home to various big cats including lions, leopards and cheetahs, as well as tree climbing pythons. Other animals include giraffe, buffalos, zebras and various antelope species such as gazelles. In the late afternoon you will return to Arusha, bringing the 2-day Tanzania short wildlife exploration to a close.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Tour – Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Short Trek/ Hike

This 2-day Kilimanjaro hike follows the Marangu Route, the oldest and most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro. After pick up from Arusha city you, will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1840m). Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro National Park, we complete the necessary paperwork before starting our hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro. Walking through the rain-forest we keep a lookout for black and white colobus monkeys, as well as other wild animals. After a 4-hour walk, we reach our first overnight stop, the Mandara Hut (2670m). Here we rest before visiting Maundi Crater with our mountain guide. From the crater, we enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior, before returning to Mandara Hut for dinner and our overnight stay. The following day continuing our Marangu hike up Kilimanjaro, towards Horombo huts encampment on a route that will take about 3 to 4 hours up to get amazing views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo. After getting magnificent views of the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, head back down to Mandara Huts for lunch then back into Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Tour – Climbing Mount Meru Short Trek/ Hike

This is a short and rewarding 2-day Hiking Trek up Mount Meru in Tanzania second highest mountain, without reaching the summit. Mt. Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park and it is 50 miles west of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Begining from Arusha, head to Arusha National Park in the morning, to trek up Mount Meru. The hike starts from Momella Gate (1500 meters/ 4200 Feet) where you meet your armed ranger. The climb starts at around 1000 hours and along the way you are likely to see buffalo, bushbucks, giraffes, warthogs, and zebras. Porters are not mandatory and one can carry as much of your own gear as you want. The hike takes about 3.5 hours to the Miriakamba Hut where you spend a night. On the second day we continue our hike up Meru, hiking a little further with your guide, where you have a clear view of Meru crater and the cliffs below the summit. We then start the descent taking two to three hours to arrive at the gate where you say farewell to your hiking crew and transfer back to Arusha where the tour ends.

2 Days 1 Night Tanzania Cultural Tour – Hadzabe Bushmen & Datoga Tribes (Driving) From Arusha

This is a 2 day Tanzania cultural safari that takes you right off the beaten track into the remote Yaeda Valley, located to the southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater to explore the cultures of the Hadzabe Bushmen & Datoga tribes. Beginning in Arusha, the tour travels to Lake Eyasi, the native homeland of the Hadzabe (Hadza), one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa with approximately 1,300 tribe members. Spend the afternoon learning more from your guide, gaining an understanding of the Hadzabe people, their traditions and skills and also the wider area. On day two, you will be accompanied by an expert guide and go hunting with Hadzabe for an hour or 2. You will walk, run and crawl through bushes looking in the shrubs for birds, antelopes, birds, mongooses and larger herbivores. In the late morning you will visit then the Datoga tribe. These pastoralists are also skilled blacksmiths. They collect metal scrap, which they cleverly process into bracelets, arrowheads and knives. You will also visit one of the huts in the village. Later, you will return to Arusha where our fantastic 2 day Hadzabe Bushmen and Datoga cultural tour ends.

Our driver/guide was awesome and gave us a lot of interesting information, our chef cooked every day 3 delicious meals for us and also considered that I can only eat gluten-free meals. Here is a quick overview of the 5 day safari in Tanzania:

• Day 0 – Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) in Tanzania and overnight stay at Mrimba Palm Hotel in Arusha
• Day 1 – Safari tour in Tarangire National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Eileen’s Tree Lodge in Karatu
• Day 2 – Safari tour in Ngorongoro Crater National Park then drive to Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp Serengeti
• Day 3 – Full day game drive in Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp
• Day 4 – Full day game drive in Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at Into Wild Africa Safari Camp
• Day 5 – Morning game drive in Serengeti National Park on route back to Arusha arriving late afternoon to conclude the tour

DAY 0 – ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA

Day 0 is an arrival day to Tanzania and your tour guide will be waiting to pick you up at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), ready to transfer you and the other guests to Arusha. Be sure to notify Samora Explorers of your flight details so they know exactly when you’ll be landing.

The journey time from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha takes 1-hour depending on traffic and you’ll be checking into the beautiful Mrimba Palm Hotel for an overnight stay.

Once all guests have arrived, your tour guide will give a briefing in the evening about the complete 5 day itinerary.

You’ll have dinner at a local restaurant or at the hotel before getting some shut-eye to prepare yourself for the best Tanzania safari!

DAY 1 – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Found on the northern plains of the country, Tarangire National Park gets its name from the mighty Tarangire River that crosses through the beautiful landscape. Spanning 2,600 square kilometers, it’s home to the largest elephant population in the whole of Tanzania, as well as 500 bird species. Safe to say this is a good place to start your trip!

If you visit during the dry season that runs from June through October you will have the opportunity to watch herds of elephants as big as 300 family members digging on the dry river bed searching for underground streams of water.

Elephants are not the only residents here. Expect to find heads of zebra, migratory wildebeest, elands, gazelles, impala, kudu, black rhinos, and more.

Not to worry, the little guys are also there such as mongooses that make use of old anthills as their homes. Or spectacular tree-climbing African pythons and their dazzling scales.

After an awesome wildlife safari in Tarangire National Park, you’ll drive to Karatu, which is located just outside Ngorongoro National Park, and the journey takes roughly 2.5 hours. You’ll check into the beautiful Eileen’s Tree Lodge for one night, and a delicious buffet dinner is included.

DAY 2 – NGORONGORO CRATER

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll check out and depart from the hotel early morning to make your way to Ngorongoro National Park and its world-renowned crater.

This national park is a unique hotspot in all of Africa due to the giant crater that was carved out of the earth about 2 million years ago. The Ngorongoro volcano had a violent explosion and later collapsed on itself.

Today the crater forms a bowl of 20 kilometers (12,5 miles) wide with sides up to 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep. Filled with folklore and tales, it’s interestingly named “The Garden of Eden” because of its breathtaking scenery.

As you approach the entry point, you can enjoy phenomenal views from the rim before dropping down into the crater to begin your half-day game drive.

This will be one of the best days on Safari in Tanzania as you’ll highly likely be able to spot all of the BIG 5 – the Black Rhino, African Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, and Elephant – all roaming around in their raw beauty.

Bird species in Ngorongoro National Park are also in abundance and you’ll have the opportunity to spot Pink Flamingoes, Eccentric Ostriches, the White Pelican, Hornbills, Crested Francolins, Guinea Fowl, and much more.

The drive from Ngorongoro National Park to Serengeti National Park takes about three hours and there will be a short game drive on the way to Into Wild Africa Safari Camp which is located in the middle of the Serengeti.

DAY 3 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

You’ll start the 3rd day with breakfast at that safari camp, or if you wish to start your full-day game drive at sunrise, the camp will prepare breakfast boxes to take with you.

Serengeti National Park covers an area of about 14,763 square kilometers and is internationally recognized. Founded in 1951, it was named after the Serengeti Plains, which means ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language.

This name is suitable for what your eyes will behold when you get to see and explore Serengeti National Park. It’s a park that can be visited all year round due to its balanced ecosystem.

On your first full-day game drive, you’ll be able to view a large variety of animals, including giraffes, lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, leopards, cheetahs, gazelles, impalas, and even crocodiles.

At midday, or whenever you are hungry, your guide will gladly pull up under the shade of a tree and prepare lunch. Don’t venture too far from the vehicle though – remember you are in the African wilderness!

Relax and unwind in the comfort of your safari tent and prepare for another epsafari the following day.

DAY 4 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Another full-day game drive in the Serengeti to find lions, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, hippos, leopards, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, hyenas, and many bird species and reptiles throughout the day.

While the game drive only is included in the Samora Explorers tour, there are other optional activities to book such as:

• Birding safari – Just like Ngorongoro National Park, Serengeti National Park is spot on for bird lovers. Get to see over 500 Birding species and try your hand at spotting all that you find.

DAY 5 – SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK & DEPARTURE

Saying goodbye is never easy, however, the last part of your journey can be made memorable with breakfast in the morning, listening to the birds and watching the mellow colors of the sunrise.

After checking out of the safari camp, enjoy a few hours of game drive in the morning before you depart Serengeti to head back to Arusha with a journey time of around 5-6 hours.

You’ll also get to visit the Serengeti Visitor Center to make use of its facilities and understand more about the park and its history.

As you won’t arrive back in Arusha till the late afternoon, it’s best to have a late-night departure flight booked (ideally departing after 9 pm as it’s a further one-hour drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport).

Alternatively, you can spend one more night in Arusha, check out the city, and leave the following day. Whichever option you choose, an airport drop-off is included.

BEST TIME TO DO A SAFARI IN TANZANIA

Tanzania is a year-round tourist destination however the best time to visit Tanzania for a safari is during the dry season, which runs from June to October.

This is when animals congregate around watering holes and rivers, making for better game viewing.

Don’t be fooled by the dry season though. You’ll want to be prepared for cooler temperatures – especially at night – and occasional rains. Be sure to pack the appropriate clothing to keep warm and dry during your trip.

During this 4 day Tanzania safari you will visit three of the most well-known reserves on Tanzania’s “northern circuit” – the Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. With all the diverse landscapes and a crater full of animals, this safari has something for everyone and is ideal for those with limited time.

Day 1 | Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park

Distance approx. 140 km; driving time approx. 2-3 hours

Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park

After a short briefing in the morning, you set off to the Lake Manyara National Park. The small park stretches along the 600 metres high Rift Valley Escarpment and is dominated by the alkaline Lake Manyara. It is here where thousands of flamingos seem to colour the shallow waters pink. Many water birds gather at the lake and more than 400 bird species are found in the park. The diverse vegetation provides a habitat for many animals such as monkeys in the forest, giraffes and antelopes on the grasslands and elephants around the acacia trees. If you are very lucky you might also see the Manyara lions, lounging in the trees. In the late afternoon you will leave the Lake Manyara National Park and head to the Kirurumu Manyara Lodge, where you will spend the night.

Day 2 | Lake Manyara Area – Serengeti National Park

Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 4-6 hours

Lake Manyara Area – Serengeti National Park

After breakfast you will drive towards the fertile crater highlands where the Iraqw people grow wheat, corn and coffee. You will pass the Ngorongoro Crater before you reach the plains of the Serengeti National Park around midday. The Serengeti is the largest park in Tanzania and has a diversity of habitats and landscapes including short grass plains, savannah, thick bush, swamps, mountains and lakes. Bizarre rock formations called Kopjes dot the grassy landscape where predators are often seen. Depending on the season you will witness the migration of thousands of animals which this park is famous for. During the short rainy season in November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June they return up north. This circle of life is completely dependent on the yearly rainfalls and the locations of the herds may vary from year to year, but your guide will know where to find the animals and where to see them best. You will spend the night at the Kati Kati Tented Camp.

Day 3 | Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Distance approx. 140 km; driving time approx. 3-5 hours

Dawn is a good time to watch wildlife and so you will be up early to join an early morning game drive. You will return to the camp for breakfast before heading out for another game drive in the park. Here in the Seronera region you will often see wildebeests and zebras in close proximity of lions and other predators such as leopards and cheetahs. After a picnic lunch you will continue your journey towards the Ngorongoro Crater. Once you have reached the crater rim you will enjoy fantastic views of this 600 metres deep collapsed volcano. You will stay at the Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp, situated on the crater rim.

Day 4 | Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

Distance approx. 190 km; driving time approx. 3-4 hours

Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

After an early breakfast you will drive down the steep and narrow road that takes you into the crater. The slopes are forested but soon the landscape changes to savannah. Here the wildlife is just breath-taking and with a little luck you can observe the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard – in just a few hours. You should also see warthogs, wildebeests, zebras, hippos and some of the more than 500 bird species of the area. After a morning dedicated to game viewing and a picnic lunch, you will leave the crater in the early afternoon to drive back to Arusha, where you will arrive in the early evening.

Is a 4-day Tanzania trip too short?

“A 4-day safari in Tanzania isn’t too short, but you’ll have to make some compromises. If at all possible, I would recommend adding a day or 2 to the itinerary. It always takes a few days to fully settle into the safari routine, and transport to, from and between the parks can take up valuable time. However, if there are constraints in terms of budget or time, you’ll still be able to have a great trip in 4 days. You’ll have a good opportunity to get a feel for the safari atmosphere. And hopefully you’ll be able to return to Tanzania or another safari destination one day. So long as you are realistic on what you can accomplish on a 4-day tour, you’re bound to have a great experience. But be aware that a common mistake people make when planning any safari is to try to fit too much into the allotted time. For obvious reasons, this tends to be accentuated on a short safari. Quality is more important than quantity, and visiting fewer parks usually allows you to spend more time on game drives and to see more wildlife.”

What can I fit in during a 4-day safari in Tanzania?

“There are many short tours on offer in Tanzania, so you’ll have options as to what you can fit into your safari. To avoid having to move lodge or campsite every day, I would recommend either spending all three nights in one location or splitting them across two locations. In the Northern safari circuit, you can easily fit two parks in a 4-day tour. You can go to the famous Serengeti National Park and visit the Ngorongoro Crater along the way. Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks are both close to Arusha National Park, and either of them can be combined with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater in a 4-day safari. At a push, you can visit Lake Manyara, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater in a 4-day safari, but be warned that you’ll be covering quite a bit of distance. To visit all four of the Northern circuit parks in 4 days is just about possible, but certainly not recommended. Alternatively, you can visit southern Tanzania in a 4-day safari. Either Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Ruaha National Park can be visited on its own as a stand-alone fly-in safari from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. You can also drive to Nyerere and visit Mikumi National Park en route.”

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

“There are many accommodation options when going on a safari in Tanzania. If you are looking for a budget 4-day safari, consider a camping tour. Camping is not only the cheapest option available; it also often allows you to stay at the best locations inside the park. If you want to keep the price down, but camping is a bit too rough to your taste, then a budget lodge tour is a good option. These use no-frills accommodation that is often outside the parks, but there are some real gems inside as well. Either way, most budget lodges form a great base for game drives. There is a large variety of mid-range lodges and hotels inside the parks and reserves. These are usually larger hotels or smaller tented camps. If you prefer some luxury on your safari, you should look at the tours offering a higher level of lodgings. These luxury establishments often go hand in hand with a fly-in safari. Top of the range are the small, exclusive luxury boutique lodges that give impeccable personal service, fine dining and excellent guiding. There are some rustic options in this category as well, including very old-school tented camps offering an experience reminiscent of colonial times.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“There is certainly no shortage of wildlife in Tanzania, and you’ll see many species on your safari. Whichever parks you go to, you’re in for a treat. The easiest wildlife viewing is in the Northern circuit parks. These include the Ngorongoro Crater and the world-renowned Serengeti, a combination that forms the best chance to see all of the Big Five on a short safari. The black rhino, which is usually difficult to spot in Tanzania, is quite easily seen in the Ngorongoro Crater. Serengeti and Ngorongoro also offer a great chance to see all the big cats, including lion and cheetah, although leopard sightings can be hit-and-miss. If you love elephant, you should certainly visit Tarangire National Park in the Dry season to see hundreds of these giants congregate along the rivers. Driving south to the Nyerere or Ruaha on a 4-day safari can be done. But the distances involved and the bad roads mean these parks are better visited on a fly-in trip when time is limited. Here you’ll get a good chance to see wild dog and some unusual antelope species, such as lesser and greater kudu.”

How much does a 4-day safari cost in Tanzania?

“It is difficult to put an actual price on a 4-day safari in Tanzania. There is a wide range of prices for safari packages, but even the budget options don’t come cheaply. You should expect a starting price of about US$1,300 per person for a mid-range lodge tour. Luxury tours are more expensive. Being able to go on an African safari is an incredible privilege. The once-in-a-lifetime experience is more than worth the money though, and the fact that you are directly contributing to conservation makes it even more worthwhile. Lodges range from budget to luxury. Camping is usually the most budget-friendly option. This can be particularly appealing to nature enthusiasts wanting a real bush experience. Whether you book a private safari or you join a group tour also affects the cost. There are many 4-day road safaris on offer, but sometimes a fly-in safari might be the better choice. It will save you valuable time. Fly-in safaris generally use luxury accommodation and this comes at a higher price. When looking for a good deal, consider traveling in the low season. You might get some rain, but this goes together with fewer crowds, lush landscapes and baby animals. It’s always worthwhile getting a few quotes from different operators.”

I’ve Worked in Safari Travel for More Than 20 Years — These Are the 4 National Parks in Tanzania I Send Travelers To

A-List travel advisor Samantha Gordon recommends where to stay and what to expect.

For many first-timers to Tanzania, the game-filled plains of the Serengeti ecosystem and the sheer wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater are undoubtedly must-see destinations. But while these northern parks attract the most attention, travelers in the know are heading off the beaten track — to the remote corners of southern and western Tanzania. This is where you’ll find the country's two largest parks (Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park), as well as the rarely visited Katavi National Park and the stunning Mahale Mountains National Park, which is home to an extraordinary troop of chimpanzees and only accessible by boat.

As a safari expert, I'm sharing my recommendations for each of these secluded, wild places. Here's an overview of Tanzania's best under-the-radar national parks.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is a 11,583-square-mile landmass in the larger Selous Game Reserve, affording a high degree of protection for its prodigious wildlife population. Only a handful of lodges exist here (for the time being), so game drives are blissfully peaceful. For those keen to get out of a 4WD vehicle, afternoons can be spent boating and fishing on the Rufiji River, observing birds and hippos, or taking a nature walk with a qualified safari guide. My favorite place to stay is  Sand Rivers camp, with its private rooms perched on the high banks overlooking the Rufiji. For a proper safari adventure , you can also spend the night in Sand Rivers' gorgeous fly camp and eat dinner next to a campfire before retiring to your simple tent under a blanket of stars.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is possibly Tanzania’s best kept secret. Covering an area larger than Maryland, it's home to just 10 lodges — and a tenth of the world’s lion population, plus a whopping 450 different bird species. The best way to experience its sheer beauty, size, and emptiness is via a hot-air balloon ride. You have to wake up at dawn, yes, but then you're rewarded with a stunning sunrise followed by a calm flight over the pristine landscape, without a vehicle in sight. I recommend returning to the luxurious surroundings of  Jabali Ridge  camp to relax by the pool before your afternoon game drive. 

Katavi National Park

Due to rains and flooding, this remote park is accessible only five months of the year — and that means everything feels just a little bit wilder. Located in Tanzania's far west, Katavi National Park is much less visited than other national parks in the country. The local wildlife includes large herds of buffalos, zebras, giraffes, and elephants, and there are plenty of hippos and crocodiles. Predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, and hyenas can be found here, too, but don’t expect lots of cat sightings. The real draw of Katavi is its remoteness — there are so few other visitors that you'll feel like you have the park to yourself.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale, the most beautiful of Tanzania’s national parks, lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika (the second-largest lake in the world by depth and volume, after Lake Baikal in Russia). The lush rain forest that rises steeply from the water’s edge is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in the country (the other is the nearby Gombe Stream National Park, made famous by Jane Goodall ), plus it's home to the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees in the world. There are no roads or infrastructure within the park boundary, so the only access is by boat. The trekking can be tough (straight up and hot!), but is incredibly rewarding. I never thought I would match the experience of tracking gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, but spending time in Mahale with chimpanzees came extremely close. I experienced the best guiding I have had in more than 20 years of African explorations. The head guide, Butati (pronounced to rhyme with Bugatti), was born in this park. He knows not only the names of all the 70-something chimps, but also their relationships, families, and characters quirks.

What's a day like at Mahale? Guests have an early breakfast and then get ready to trek, awaiting the radio call of rangers who alert the camp of the day’s first sighting. Then, they head straight out on foot in search of chimps. After the morning’s exertions (and, ideally, incredible wildlife sightings), there's nothing more inviting than a boat trip out onto Lake Tanganyika — I recommend diving into the crystal-clear waters as the best way to cool off.

NIGHT GAME DRIVE SAFARIS IN AFRICA Bundle Up For An Exciting Night Safari

Do you imagine all the wildlife safari action occurs only during the day? Not really. There is a nightly shift in the fields and forests you might not know about.

When the sun begins to fade and the familiar characteristics of the savanna and bush transform into a different sort of world, the air cools, the big cats come alive and new species emerge from their daytime hiding spots.

This is the domain of the African wilds at night, where up to 70 percent of the animals become active throughout the darkening landscapes prowling, hunting, and scavenging until the first light of dawn.

It is the time of the night safari – when the heat of the day dissipates and is replaced by gentle breezes, starlight, and the moon casting its cool shadows upon the land. With your safari guide in your 4 x 4 Jeep, you can move purposefully on the savannah or through the bush, until the lit eyes of a lion, leopard, or other night-prowling creature stare back at you through the inky dark.

Bundled up with your blanket and thermos, a night game drive can take on a feeling of tingling anticipation as the sounds of a big cat, a hippo, or the scurrying nearby of some unseen creature remind you to move quietly as you have entered their nocturnal realm.

Prepping for Your Night Game Drive

Your night safari can be a continuation of your daytime game drives. It can also occur after you’ve had a relaxing dinner or a sundowner – a traditional evening cocktail out in the field. As the sun’s final orange glow starts to fade you get ready for a different sort of after-dark experience.

Most night game drives begin between 7 and 9 pm and last about two hours.

We’ve already mentioned bringing a blanket and thermos to stay warm – even in equatorial Africa, the evening temperature can dip quite rapidly. By all means, bring insect repellent as these tiny pests also make their presence felt at night. And don’t forget your camera; you can successfully take photos on a night game drive and we’ll give you some tips below.

Another way to prepare is to be aware of the kinds of wildlife you’re most likely to encounter, so you’ll know where to look and how to identify them. Bright glowing eyes reflecting back at you are obvious but also look for moving shadows nearby, a clear sign of wildlife.

What Nighttime Wildlife You May See

As the last of the daylight disappears, you may hear an increase in the type and number of bird calls and the sounds of the wildlife stirring all about.

Many of the animals that wake with the moon differ from those you’ll see on a daylight game drive. Or, their behavior can be markedly different. Those lions or leopards seen napping during the hot daylight hours come alive in the cool air of the night.

The big cats are their most active during these hours and it’s exciting to see a pride of lions moving ahead in formation on a nighttime hunt. 

Your guide knows the best spots to find the wildlife during these after-hours and you may spot rhinos and elephants moving quietly and mysteriously through the moonlight.

Besides the larger nocturnal animals there is another world of smaller wildlife that comes alive during the hours from dusk to dawn. You might see little bushbabies leaping about, and unusual species like the aardvark, honey badger, porcupine, chameleons, tiny elephant shrews, and civets and genets – small, cat-like mammals.

Where Can I Go On Night Safaris?

You’ll need to do some advance prep to learn where night safaris are offered as most national parks don’t allow for game drives after dark. But we can help! Africa Kenya Safaris will create a night safari for you on many private reserves throughout the country.

Not far from Nairobi, you’ll find the versatile private park of Ol Pejeta Conservancy , home to all of Africa’s “Big Five” as well as the African wild dog and sanctuaries for rhinos and chimpanzees. The Conservancy is an excellent location for night game drives as it offers glimpses into its many prides of lions and leopards.

If you are staying at one of Kenya’s coastal resorts, you may want to visit Taita Hills Wildlife Conservancy for both day and nighttime safaris. The salt licks here are excellent spots to see nighttime wildlife and the nearby watering holes are softly lit to enhance your viewing.

A select group of private conservancies surrounding the Masa Mara National Reserve also offer excellent opportunities for night game drives. If you’re visiting the national reserve for daytime game viewing, we can extend your safari into the evening with a night game drive at the Mara North , Mara Naboisho , Mara Siana , Mara Triangle , or Olare Motorogi Conservancies .

Tips For Nighttime Photography

Although nighttime photography on the savannah and in the bush has its challenges, it’s not impossible, especially now with sensitive digital cameras and computer imaging software.

The only ambient light available on your night safari is what nature provided – from the stars and the moon. The animals aren’t used to bright lights which can frighten, confuse, and scare them off. Often your guide will use a spotlight to see the animals – fitted with a red filter which is softer and doesn’t have an adverse effect. The same goes for your photography – never use a flash when photographing wildlife at night.

So what are the workarounds to ensure you can get a decent image of that leopard overhead or a nearby grunting hippo?

Your camera has settings that will help gather the available light:

• Adjust the sensitivity of your camera to an ISO of 1600 or more if possible.
• Open the lens’ aperture as wide as it will allow, somewhere between 4.0 and 2.8.
• Slow the shutter speed to 1/40 of a second.
• Remember to turn off your flash.
• And finally, you can push the visibility of the image and remove any red-eye with a photo editing program on your computer.

Using the above tips you should be able to create lasting photos of your nighttime game drive and proof that you were there, witnessing the mystery, the drama, and the incredible struggle for survival filling these darkened fields that only ends at the coming of the dawn.
