Music + concerts, subscriber only, music + concerts | why andrew bird and madison cunningham covered the debut ‘buckingham nicks’ lp, the two singer-songwriters' collaboration, "cunningham bird," is a track-by-track reimagining of stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham's 1973 debut..
The occasion? One of the first full performances of the two singer-songwriters’ new collaboration, the album “Cunningham Bird,” a track-by-track reimagining of “Buckingham Nicks,” the 1973 debut of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham .
At the time, it earned the on-and-off lovers an invitation to join Fleetwood Mac , with whom Buckingham and Nicks found massive fame almost overnight in the mid-’70s. But today, the album is long out of print, almost impossible to find outside of unofficial videos on YouTube.

The original record delivered a dozen diverse songs, most of which stand the test of time. In the hands of Cunningham and Bird , it’s even more beautiful as new arrangements, harmonies and instrumentation deliver gorgeous takes on forgotten would-be classics.
Bird and Cunningham traded verses and harmonies while playing acoustic guitars – and Bird also at times whistling and playing violin. They were backed by drummer Griffin Goldsmith from Dawes and keyboardist Mike Viola, who also produced the album.
The audience inside the sold-out Troubadour hardly moved as the album flowed from song to song. When Cunningham and the others paused for a few seconds of silence near the end of “Crystal,” a fan broke the silence, shouting, ‘Oh my God!’ at the beauty of the music.
Cunningham smiled slightly before she started to sing again, playing uncommon patterns on her guitar, and with Bird whistling melody lines, they finished the song to cheers and applause.
A few days after that show, Bird talked about how he and Cunningham arrived at this unusual album, how they went about making these songs their own, and what kind of reaction they’ve received from Buckingham and Nicks for the project.
“I was just looking simply for a reason to do more live shows with Madison,” Bird says. “I just wanted to do a little tour where we play each other’s songs. And then it was suggested by a friend, they pointed out this ‘Buckingham Nicks’ album, and said, ‘You know, someone should really cover this album.’
“He explained why, you know, that it’s out of print,” he says. “It’s difficult to hear it and it’s a great album. And it all lined up.
“It just filtered into place,” he says. “We needed something to hang it on, to filter it through our own sensibilities. And it really surprised us how much we found in there, as far as like it’s just a fascinating sort of lost relic.”
‘We’re not a cover band’
Bird says that he wasn’t particularly familiar with the record, and that Cunningham didn’t know it at all.
“It’s really a character study of two people, that many people are very familiar with for everything that happened after this album,” Bird says. “And you hear in this album, if you do a deep dive, what’s to come, the good and the bad. You hear both of their distinct personalities and the worldviews often clashing at that young age.
“So we just had a lot of fun making it,” he says.
On stage at the Troubadour, Bird had acknowledged the changes he and Cunningham had made in the original songs.
“I was looking out there, thinking I bet there are some outposts there going, ‘Hmm, I’m not so sure about these arrangements,’” he told the audience. “We’re doing this with total respect for the music. We’re just not a cover band. We’ve got to do it our way.”
The original album arrived in 1973, Bird notes, “at that inflection point of the end of the hippie era, beginning of this sort of prog rock god. It very much is in that realm, but there’s a little bit of, like, Cat Stevens feel to it as well.
“It’s very dense, and I identify with that from my own early albums,” he says. “When you’re in your 20s, you just don’t know what you’re not supposed to do. You try to throw everything you’re inspired by into one album.
“The overall production style, there’s kind of an early ’70s haze like drug den vibe to it,” Bird says. “Fleetwood Mac cleaned it up a lot. But we also ripped up the shag rug carpeting on this one and revealed the hardwood floors underneath, I guess.”
Having not grown up with “Buckingham Nicks,” Bird and Cunningham respected it without the reverence that might have made it difficult to reconstruct.
“We cleaned up it a bit in some ways rhythmically but also added our own harmonic ideas, and messed with some of the perspective on who’s singing what and to whom, gender-wise. Because we both believe, like, what’s the point of covering a whole album if you’re going to feel beholden to it?”
‘An interesting pair’
Bird, who has never met Buckingham or Nicks, came to admire them more from his deep dive into the album.
“They’re an interesting pair,” he says. “He’s obviously known as a great guitar player, like virtuosic, and you hear it on this. I identify with the kind of focus it takes to be able to play your instrument that well, but then also write a fairly simple song that connects with people.
“Usually one excludes the other to some degree,” Bird says. “Like the amount of focus it takes to be a master of your instrument, sometimes you can’t see the whole picture when you’re trying to write a song. It’s kind of rare that those two come together so well.
“It’s just an interesting story,” he says of the genesis of “Buckingham Nicks.” “She was, I think, cleaning houses to support him so he could stay home and practice. Then he gets offered the gig with Fleetwood Mac, and he said, ‘We’re a package. You’ve got to take Stevie too.’ She goes on to become the most successful of them all. The most iconic.”
Why “Buckingham Nicks went out of print decades ago and has never even been released on CD remains a mystery.
“It’s all there on this album,” Bird says of the talents of its creators. “I don’t know why it’s out of print. I think it didn’t do particularly well at the time. And maybe it’s how a lot of people feel about the first thing they do. But who knows? It’s a mystery.”
The “Cunningham Bird” album, however, is not a mystery to Buckingham and Nicks, Bird says.
“They are aware of it, and no cease and desist yet,” he says, laughing. “But yeah, they’ve been cool. Lindsey’s camp has been very receptive and encouraging. And Stevie’s has been … encouraging enough.”
‘Not the last of it’
The Troubadour show on Sept. 30 came a few weeks before the Oct. 18 release of “Cunningham Bird.” The group had premiered the album live at the Newport Folk Festival in July and played only a handful of other shows with it.
Bird says initial nerves about how it would be received, especially given no one had heard the whole album before the live shows, eased as soon as he and Cunningham saw the audience response.
“The reception has been really good,” he says. “When you hear of someone not doing their original songs and covering something else, there’s a slight stigma against it. It would have been normal before the late ’60s and ’70s of the singer-songwriter era, where it’s like you want your singer-songwriters to have lived what they’re singing.
“I don’t know,” Bird continues. “It’s just sometimes that leads to a kind of stagnancy of, ‘This is classic and should not be touched.’ Whereas folk tradition, jazz tradition, there’s jazz standards, there’s old ballads that get done and redone hundreds and hundreds of times. Like, why shouldn’t this stuff be allowed to live in a living tradition?”
As a performer, Bird says he grows stronger through covering other artists’ songs.
“Usually what excites me about covering a song is the thought that I could turn people onto something that they haven’t heard,” he says. “Or maybe – it’s not the case with this (album) – the original version doesn’t quite capture the potential of how great the song is.
“A lot of people cover very well-known songs and they do a note for note, and I just don’t get that,” Bird says. “To me, it’s a chance to turn my own audience on to something I think is cool.
“And what I get out of it is I learn, without the pressure of it coming from your own head, you learn about how you sing,” he says. “It just brings out different things in your voice.”
A live video stream of the full Troubadour show arrives on Nugs.net at 5 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The HD video stream costs $9.99 and will be available to play or replay on demand through Dec. 1.
Other than that, Bird says there aren’t many future shows planned, though he hopes he and Cunningham continue to have scattered opportunities to play the album live in the future.
“Depending on how the album’s received, it could be kind of a perennial thing,” he says. “You know, ‘Cunningham Bird’ do ‘Buckingham Nicks’ at such and such festival.
“But Madison’s off recording her new album now and I’m writing now, and we’ll see what comes up. It’s not the last of it. It’ll definitely be more.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Members of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team are drawing up a list of military officers to be fired, potentially to include the Joint Chiefs of Staff, two sources said, in what would be an unprecedented shakeup at the Pentagon. The planning for the firings is at an early stage after Trump's Nov. 5 election victory and could change as Trump's administration takes shape, said the sources, who are familiar with the Trump transition and requested anonymity to speak candidly about the plans. One of the sources questioned the feasibility of a mass firing at the Pentagon.

Andrew Bird announced his fourteenth annual series of Gezelligheid concerts, taking place December 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 at Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church . Since 2009, the intimate performances have become a tried-and-true tradition of the holiday season, defying wintertime doldrums through a communal experience of warm, comforting music. Following a sold-out run of shows in 2023, this year will once again feature seven nights of instrumental violin pieces, holiday classics, and fan favorites, filling the space by way of Bird’s signature, spinning Victrola horns. Referencing a Dutch term that loosely translates to “cozy,” Gezelligheid is presented by Jam, Metro and 93XRT.
Andrew Bird returns home to Chicago on the heels of two special nights at the Green Mill this spring, where he celebrated the release of his latest album, Sunday Morning Put-On . Since then, he has also played Newport Folk Festival, The Hollywood Bowl and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, with much more to share soon.

The talented multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird (born July 11th, 1973) has found legions of fans of his indie rock that blends swing, gypsy and folk, all delivered with his virtuosic abilities.
A classically trained violinist, Andrew Bird studied music for much of his life, during which he developed a talent for merging American and European folk traditions with jazz, swing and calypso, creating a distinct style. Bird released his first solo album, "Music of Hair" in 1996, a record that displayed his skills on the violin. He soon joined up with the band Squirel Nut Zippers, with whom he recorded three albums, finding moderate commercial success.
Bird then acted as bandleader for his project, Bowl of Fire, releasing the albums "Thrills," "Oh! the Grandeur" and "The Swimming Hour" between 1999 and 2001, gaining widespread critical acclaim for his efforts, yet was unable to garner a large following, often only playing to handfuls of people at his gigs. However, following an impromptu solo performance after his bandmates could not attend, Bird received a rapturous reception, prompting his decision to go solo in 2003.
His solo debut, "Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Production of Eggs" was released on Ani DiFranco's label, Righteous Babe, in 2005. The record displayed an indie-folk sound, featuring an array of instruments all played by Bird himself. In 2006, Bird signed to Fat Possum Records, through which he released "Armchair Apocrypha," a collaboration with electronic artist Martin Dosh. The album was warmly received, prompting appearances on the "Late Show with David Letterman," amongst several high profile performances. "Noble Beast" in 2009 continued Bird's eclectic explorations, also released with a bonus CD of instrumental pieces.
Having dabbled with film composition for Jonathn Segal's "Norman," Bird returned to his solo work in 2012, with "Break It Yourself." The companion album, "Hands of Glory" arrived later that year, continuing to find critical praise and a growing number of listeners. WIth his newly formed backing band, a seventh album was released in 2014, "Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of…" a collection of covers of the Handsome Family, an act also hailing from Chicago, US.
Live reviews
Andrew Bird is a human wunderkammer... A walking cabinet of musical and scientific curiosities.
From out his kaleidoscopic mind, all kinds of marvels pour - and, refreshingly, none of them are akin to a simple love song. They're a child's wide-eyed wonderings at the world, sometimes anxious, sometimes curious; always mysterious, always looking up at the stars. Even when they're about emotions, they're fundamentally scientific.
There's no single genre to define the man's style. There's vintage swing Andrew Bird, all thrilling, crackling blasts of gramophonic sound and foot-shuffling strings. There's indie rock Andrew Bird, the one who plays at muddy summer music festivals to crowds of welly-wearing cool kids, plugging in and playing up the electric guitar-heavy tracks. Then there's no-one-word-to-describe-it Andrew Bird, where washes of sound slip through holes in the ocean floor, where a violin bow yielded with surgical precision can cut right through your heart. Where you don't look back, 'cause it'll drive you mad. At a live shows he whistles, sings, plucks strings and strums his violin. Alone he is breathtaking. Add in some live-looping technology, and he becomes a one-man orchestra.
When he delves into "Why" - his signature live tune that seems to make it into every concert - he does so with unrelenting passion, harvested from a quiet well of sensuality you didn't know was hidden inside that slender frame.
Turns out Andrew Bird, like the Tardis, is bigger on the inside.

Seeing Andrew Bird is a spiritual experience--there's no better way to put it. Few artists craft a live show so meticulously and deliberately, but with Bird, everything from the lights to the stage positioning to the way the songs progress throughout the set illustrates just how carefully this man plans his concerts. What's so remarkable about seeing Andrew Bird perform is that he's the rare artist for whom you don't need to come in with a wish list of songs. For his most popular tracks, his live arrangements are reimaginations that sound only subtly like their recorded versions, and so are really new experiences entirely. But his commitment to carefully organized live compositions ensures that even songs you've never heard before are just so incredibly gorgeous and delicate that nothing falls flat--everything pleases the crowd. He's an artist that even casual fans can enjoy live, because one doesn't expect you to know the words and sing along or move with his cues; instead, you allow yourself to soak in the sonic sounds of a man who, quite simply, knows music. Whether Andrew Bird is layering his sounds with loop pedals to fill the room or crowding his small folk group around a single microphone, you will not be disappointed by what this man has to offer. He has created a sound so distinctly his own that I can't imagine any other artist rivaling what he does on the stage. If he comes around, you have to find a way to get to the show.
There are few artists who can captivate a room and a crowd to the same extent as multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird. The Illinois singer/songwriter has a fiercely loyal following on both sides of the Atlantic and his shows are often few and far between so tickets go expectedly quickly. Now a frequenter of the US charts, his chamber pop sounds are still considered to be a cult taste in the UK yet this does not stop the crowds turning up in droves as he stops by the most appropriate venues for his music.
A number of years ago he played a suitably somber set at London's Roundhouse as he orchestrates a number of classical musicians in the recreation of his lengthy discography. Beginning completely solo for 'Why' proves the sheer weight of Andrew's talents as a musician before the accompanying instrumentalists offer rich and textured layers to 'Orpheo Looks Back' and the dramatic 'Fiery Crash'. An acoustic interlude focuses on Bird's wise and wonderful lyrical voice before the musicians rejoin to crescendo in a beautiful encore of 'Fake Palindromes'. An idyllic venue plays host to a truly phenomenal artist.
Saw Andrew Bird at Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. Very good live artist, excellent as always. Whistling, multi-instrumental musicianship, looping, violin skills are consistent highlights of Andrew Bird shows. Band included a drummer, a guitarist, a bass player, + andrew bird on violin, guitar, and glockenspiel. At the beginning of the encore the band gathered around a single mic to play a short acoustic set, which was a great addition to the show.
-played 8/19 songs from new album Are You Serious
-happy to see some older classics like nervous tic motion, fake palindromes, imitosis
-duets lusitania and left handed kisses played solo, but very well done
-excellent acoustic cover of Neil Young's Harvest as a Canadian thing for the Toronto audience
If you like Andrew Bird, it's definitely worth going to an Andrew Bird concert. You won't be disappointed!
Spectacular concert! It doesn't matter if you like just one of his songs or know each word by heart his concert will not disappoint. I cried pretty much for every violin piece, and when there was no violin I cried of joy! Literally. He had to come back on stage again to perform three more songs because we (the audience) couldn't stop clapping after he left. I made both the bands we watched before him worth everything! I have never spent better 25 euros! Andrew Bird is incredible.
I have seen the Gezelligheid shows at the church so I was eager to see him at a different, more festive, venue. He delivered high energy numbers, a few Gezelligheid moments in spite of the large space and then encored with some Hands of Glory gorgeousness. He played songs from at least 6 different albums. The gamut of Andrew Bird genius was on full display. It was all I could have asked for. Time, money and energy well spent.
The best musician I've ever seen live. Period. He improv'd every single song in the most beautiful way. Stage presence/swagger without being overbearing. Both full band and acoustic sets were innovative and incredible. I've always loved his studio stuff, but this was on a different level. Five out of five stars.
Great show from Andrew last night! Highlights for me were Nervous Tick Motion, Left-Handed Kisses, and Tenuousness. Great acoustic 4-song encore at the end as well! You could Andrew and co. had a lot of fun. It was a great performance for the end of their tour!
Andrew Bird showcases true musicianship. Perfectionism is evident as he showcases his craft. He will take you from intimate whistling and violin plucking to soaring melodies bowed on his violin with a killer band supporting him.
His shows are not to miss!
What a TREMENDOUS show!! Loved the duel gramophone speaker effect on stage! Very VERY cool! The band was tight, all of the players looked like they were having a great time.. the audience was truly enjoying it. Thank you for the music Andrew Bird

Longwood Debut Grammy Award nominated folk musician Andrew Bird joins world-renowned Afro-pop duo Amadou & Mariam in a lively performance exploring diverse genres.
With 17 albums to his name, Andrew Bird leads this lively performance of diverse genres. As a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and whistler, Bird has performed around the globe, acted in Fargo , scored the FX series Baskets , served as a TED Talk presenter, and many other accomplishments.
Known as the most famous ambassadors for Malian and African music, Amadou & Mariam have brought African music to the charts and the dance floor, playing Coachella to Glastonbury and opening for Coldplay to the Scissor Sisters.
More about Andrew Bird Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jack’s Big Music Show , and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide.
Bird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney’s The Muppets movie, scored the FX series Baskets , and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that exhibited at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, Boston’s ICA, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for The New York Times .
More recently, Bird released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations , recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Additionally, Bird hosts an ongoing series of live-streamed performances called Live from the Great Room , putting the creative process on display for fans as he collaborates and converses with friends in a candid, intimate setting.
Shortly after receiving his 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album with My Finest Work Yet , Bird made his professional acting debut in the cast of Fargo . In March 2021, Bird released his latest project, These 13 , an album entirely co-written and recorded with his longtime friend and former Squirrel Nut Zippers collaborator Jimbo Mathus. Captured live on tape, just the two of them playing and singing from opposite sides of a microphone, These 13 marked the first set of new music that Bird and Mathus created together in more than 20 years.
More about Amadou & Mariam For the past 40-odd years, Amadou & Mariam have managed to joyfully combine their love story with a musical career. Amadou & Mariam have collaborated with many different people and worked with producers that seem far removed from their universe, like Damon Albarn of Blur and Manu Chao. They have collaborated with artists who are building tomorrow’s pop music, including Santigold, TV On The Radio, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and have had their tracks remixed by Yuksek, Vitalic, Henrik Schwarz, Miike Snow, and Ashley Beedle, leading the songs to the dance floor and underlining their intrinsically danceable quality.
By introducing to the world the richness and subtleties of African music, the duo has brought African music to the charts and to the dance floor. They’ve inspired many artists to mix Afro and electro sounds, such as MHD, DJ Mujava, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Four Tet, and Jamie xx. At the request of the artist, $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Hope This Helps Fund .
