Heraklion (aka Iraklion) is the largest port city and capital of Crete Island, Greece. One of Greece's biggest cities, it has population around 175,000.

Heraklion is an important seaport and a ferry dock. Regularly scheduled ferries serve the routes to the Greek islands Ios , Paros , Mykonos , Rhodes and Santorini . There are also daily ferries to Piraeus-Athens ( mainland Greece).

Among the most popular tourist sites near Heraklion are the ruins of the Palace of Minos (aka Knossos Palace). In Minoan times (3650-1450 BC) it was the largest settlement on Crete Island. Even though there is no archaeological evidence of it, Knossos may have had a port at Heraklion as early as 2000 BC.

The city's architecture is dominated by Venetian buildings, like Koules Fortress (Rocca al Mare), ramparts and arsenal. Around the city can be found several statues, sculptures and busts commemorating significant events and figures of Crete's history (El Greco, Nikos Kazantzakis, Eleftherios Venizelos, Vitsentzos Kornaros). Many fountains of the Venetian-era are also well preserved (Bembo, Palmeti, Priuli, Morosini, Sagredo.

In 2016, Port Heraklion had scheduled a total of 170 cruise ship calls and handled ~220,000 passengers-crew. The numbers were close to the port's 2015 statistics. The port expects in near future the passenger shipping traffic (both cruise and ferry) to increase due to the political situations in Turkey and Egypt. In 2016, almost all Mediterranean cruise companies canceled their scheduled calls at ports in Turkey and diverted their vessels to Greek seaports instead. In 2017, all major cruise companies (with big-sized liners) canceled their calls at Kusadasi - one of Turkey's largest resort destinations and cruise port to Ephesus (ancient Greek city). All ship calls were replaced with Greek islands, mainly to Rhodes and Santorini .

Greek Ports Association's General Assembly (held in late-January 2021) ranked Port Heraklion Greece's first in terms of cruise passenger volume. During the COVID crisis in 2020, the cruise port handled 24 ship calls and a total of 19998 tourists (~30% of all that visited Greece in 2020). In 2019, the port handled ~287000 cruisers.

Heraklion cruise terminal

Port Heraklion's new cruise ship terminal covers a total area of 2500 m2 (26900 ft2) and has all the facilities and staff needed to conduct passenger clearance (passport and security). There is a separate check-in area dedicated to embarking passengers.

The Heraklion cruise port is divided into two parts: the old Venetian harbour and Heraklion ferry/cruise port , adjacent to each other.

  • The old Venetian harbour is centered around the Koules fortress in the western part of the port, while the ferry/cruise terminal is located on the eastern side. It takes approximately a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal to reach the old Venetian harbour where the old town begins.
  • Port Heraklion’s new cruise ship terminal covers a total area of 2500 square meters and features all necessary facilities for a smooth embarkation/debarkation of the passengers. In a modern terminal building, you’ll find a tourist office where you can get free city maps, free wi-fi, luggage storage facilities, a mini-market, a duty-free shop, a cafe, a car rental, an ATM and a few other facilities.

The port of Heraklion is also a major ferry port on Crete providing daily and weekly transfers to Piraeus, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Chalki, Corfu , Igoumenitsa, Patras and other Greek ports.

1. Palace of Knossos

The Palace of Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete whose origins date back to the Neolithic period. It is believed that the first palaces on Crete, including Knossos, were built soon after 2000 BC in the early part of the Middle Minoan period. At that time, the imposing palace of Knossos, built on a hilltop overlooking the site of today’s Heraklion, became the political and ceremonial center of the Minoan civilization and culture.

Knossos archeological site, Heraklion

The Minoan civilization started declining around 1450 BC when a natural disaster, probably an earthquake, hit the island and destroyed a large portion of it. The Minoan civilization finally ended around 1100 BC, during the early Greek Dark Ages, characterized by the collapse of the Bronze Age civilization.

The Minoan civilization was the first advanced and organized civilization in Europe and Knossos was one of the most powerful cities in the eastern Mediterranean. At the beginning of the 20th century, the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans started the excavations and rediscovered this incredible civilization that used to have its own writing systems, developed trade, economy, sophisticated art and massive building complexes used for different purposes.

Palace of Knossos

Nowadays, visitors can explore the archeological ruins and learn the facts, myths (including the most famous one about the Labyrinth and Minotaur) and legends associated with the Minoan civilization. The artifacts, artworks and objects found during the excavations are kept in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the most impressive archaeological museums you’ll ever visit! The combo ticket for the Palace of Knossos and Archaeological Museum costs around 15€ (price from 2023) and audio guides are included in the fare. You may encounter long lines, so booking the ticket online is advisable. There is large parking available for buses and cars next to the site.

The palace of Knossos is located approximately 6 km/3.7 miles (less than a 15-minute drive) north of the port. You can go there on a shore excursion, by taxi, Hop on Hop off bus, or a local Blue Line bus (#2) that departs every 15-20 minutes from the Terminal Station Port bus stop (in front of GDM Megaron Hotel) and finishes at Terminal Station Knossos.

Check out the Palace of Knossos tours and activities

2. Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Visiting the Palace of Knossos doesn’t go without a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion because this impressive museum houses all the artifacts, artworks, and objects found during the excavations of Knossos at the beginning of the 20th century.

Housed in a 2-story yellow building in the heart of Heraklion town, approximately a 10-minute drive from the Palace of Knossos and within a 15-minute walk from the port, the fascinating museum consists of numerous rooms displaying outstanding collections from all areas of Cretan prehistory and history. Wandering around its rooms you’ll discover stunning frescoes, sarcophagi, pottery containers, jewelry, figurines, and other valuable items found on the site of Knossos. The visit can take from 1 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and interest. The museum is incredible and surely one of the most fascinating archaeological museums in the world.

3. Old Venetian Harbour and Koules Fortress

The old port of Heraklion has been the most important harbour of the Eastern Mediterranean over the centuries. It flourished with the arrival of Venetians at the beginning of the 13th century and became “the other Venice of the East”. In the last two centuries of Venetian rule on Crete, it developed into the greatest harbour in the Eastern Mediterranean exporting wine, olive oil, raisins, cheese, and other Cretan products.

Unfortunately, due to many modifications and modern development of the city, not many of the original installations remained. Nowadays, you can admire the marina filled with picturesque fishing boats and small yachts dominated by the Koules Fortress , the main monument of the past times and symbol of Heraklion port.

Koules Fortress, also known as Castello del Molo or Rocca a Mare, is a square-shaped Venetian citadel built in the 16th century to guard the entry to the harbour. It is open to the public and the entrance fee is 2€. After you reach the fortress, you can continue walking down the 2 km-long fortified mole to the Heraklion lighthouse. There is no shade, so make sure you bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

4. Heraklion Old Town

From the Heraklion port passenger terminal, walk along the seafront to the old harbour and once you reach the roundabout, cross the street and enter the 25th of August Street . This is the main pedestrian street and the main tourist area where most major sights, shops, and restaurants can be found.

The old town of Heraklion is surrounded on three sides by massive Venetian Walls that tower above the surrounding city, originally dating from the Middle Ages. This area is filled with bustling pedestrian-only streets where you’ll find churches, squares, monuments and countless restaurants, cafes and shops. Some of the main landmarks you’ll come across in the old town are:

  • Church of Agios Titos – Originally built in the 10th century, the present church is dedicated to St. Titus and is a former 19th-century mosque.
  • Church of Agios Minas – The largest church in Crete was built in the 19th century and is renowned for its ornate religious art and iconography.
  • Morosini Fountain on the Lion Square – This is the central square of the city featuring the 17th-century fountain and is surrounded by plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops.
  • Venetian Loggia (Town Hall) – A stone’s throw from the Morosini fountain, the Loggia is Crete’s best-preserved Venetian building. It is located on the 25th of August street.
  • Central Market – Only a few minutes’ walk from the Morosini fountain, you’ll come across a colorful Central market on 1866 street where you can browse for clothing, jewelry, linens, souvenirs, fresh fruits and vegetables, spices and herbs, you name it!

5. Heraklion Museums

Besides the iconic Heraklion Archaeological Museum which is a must, Heraklion has several other museums worth visiting:

  • Natural History Museum of Crete – Located on the seafront, a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk west of the port of Heraklion, this museum features illusion exhibits and fun activities such as earthquakes and tsunami simulators. You’ll learn about animal life and geography in Crete, with an entire floor dedicated to stuffed animals that live or once lived around the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Historical Museum of Crete – Housed in a yellow neoclassical building overlooking the sea, the history museum traces 1.700 years of history on the island, from early Christian times to the modern era. The museum is located near the old harbour, a 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk west of the cruise terminal.
  • El Greco Museum – Little is known that Crete is the birthplace of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, world-known as El Greco, a famous Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco was born in 1541 in Fodele, a small village situated 33 km/20 miles (a 35-minute drive) west of Heraklion. His birth house was transformed into a museum and is open to the public.
  • Christian Art Museum
  • Museum of Ancient Greek Technology of Heraklion by Kotsanas

6. Beaches in Heraklion

Crete boasts hundreds of majestic beaches with soft sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Many of them are famous worldwide, such as the breathtaking Elafonissi Beach, Falassarna Beach, and Balos Lagoon (read about these beaches in my article Top 15 Things to Do on Crete from Rethymno, Chania and Heraklion ).

Cape Tigani, Balos lagoon

The city of Heraklion doesn’t have a public city beach, but there are a few nearby beaches that you can enjoy:

  • Ammoudara Beach – This long, golden sand beach is located 6 km/3.7 miles (less than a 15-minute drive) west of the port of Heraklion. The beach is equipped with amenities such as sunbeds and umbrellas and is backed by tavernas and cafes where you can grab a bite or get refreshments. This beach is popular for kiteboarding.
  • Agia Pelagia Beach – Located a 35-minute drive northwest of the port, this beach boasts crystal-clear azure waters and is popular with young people.
  • Lygaria Beach – Another beautiful beach with all types of facilities, located a few kilometers south of Agia Pelagia and a 30-minute drive northwest of Heraklion.
  • Analipsi Beach – Situated a 25-minute drive east of Heraklion, Analipsi is a relaxed beach backed by palm trees with swimming and water sports. It is known for its picturesque Agia Marina chapel.
  • Karteros Beach – This beach is located a 15-minute drive east of Heraklion town. It is a nicely organized beach with golden sand and crystal waters awarded by the EU Blue Flag. All types of facilities, taverns and bars are available at the beach.

Note: When planning a beach day in Crete, check the weather on https://poseidon.hcmr.gr/ . Winds can be very strong and swimming on some beaches may be prohibited.

Wrapping Up

If it is your first time in Heraklion port, I suggest you explore Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Time permitting, you can stroll through the old town and along the waterfront to the Venetian old harbour and admire the beauty and vibe of past times.

Make sure you treat your taste buds with some local cuisine delicacies and indulge in a glass of premium quality Cretan wine. In case you have already visited Heraklion, you can then book a trip to the countryside and visit the authentic Greek villages, the ancient ruins, caves, islands, or other famous towns such as Agios Nikolaos, located a 1-hour drive east of Heraklion. Heraklion, Greece

Heraklion: tourist information

Iraklion is the capital of Crete and of the prefecture of Iraklion. It is easily accessible from Athens by at least four flights a day. There are international flights from Iraklion to Frankfurt and to Amsterdam. Between April and October there are charters from many other European cities.

Iraklion is a very busy city, especially during the tourist season, so it is advisable to book reservations for accommodation before arrival, especially during August. If you are travelling by car there are parking lots near the end of Kalokairinou Street at the Chanioporta and below the Archaeological Museum, one of the many uses of a medieval moat. Make use of them and take the opportunity to see the historical monuments.

As you walk up 25 August (Odos 25 Avgoustou) Street you will see numerous agencies advertising tours of all kinds. Santorini, Rhodes, and Mikonos are some of the most visited islands. You can also arrange tours of Knossos, Festos, Gortyn, and the Samaria Gorge. Most of the offices are professional and offer good value. However, to avoid confusion and disappointment, pay attention to the details of the trip, such as: the time of pick up, time of arrival at site, time spent at site, and entrance fees; these may sometimes be vague.

The National Road is easily reached from Iraklion. You can drive to Agios Nikolaos in 1 hr (72km) and Chania in 2 hours (137km). This road is enjoyable and the scenery is spectacular. Drive with caution on all roads in Crete. All means of transportation, including donkeys, farm equipment, and tour buses use the roads at varying speeds. These facts are not truly understood by many of the tourists, or even the locals.

Iraklion is the fifth largest city in Greece and there has been a settlement here since Neolithic times. Although few remains have been found in the city proper, it was probably a port for Knossos during Minoan and Roman times. The Saracens captured it in 824 A.D. and renamed it El Khandak (The Moat) after the moat they dug around it.

The city was regained by the Byzantine Empire in 961 A.D. after many unsuccessful attempts. After the Crusaders occupied Constantinople in 1204, they gave Crete to Boniface of Monferrat who sold the island to Venice for one thousand pieces of silver.

Under Venetian rule the arts flourished and “Candia”, as the Venetians renamed it, became a centre of learning. Many scholars and artists took refuge in Candia after the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

The Venetians began construction of the city walls in 1462, which were completed more than a century later. The walls were 4km in length, of a triangular shape and had seven bastions. The Venetians also built the harbour and various other masterly architectural works.

The walls proved their deterrent strength when the city was besieged for 21 years, one of the longest sieges in history. The final surrender came in 1669 after 100,000 Turks and 30,000 Venetians had been killed.

Turkish occupation was heavily resented by the Cretans and continuous guerrilla warfare was waged against the Turks and, in return, the Turks often made reprisals against the Cretan population in the cities.

Iraklion grew in size after the 1913 union with Greece. However, its strategic location again made it a target for invading forces in 1941. The German bombardment during the Battle of Crete caused a great amount of damage and after the war the city was extensively rebuilt.

Chania was originally the capital of Crete. The administrative centre of Crete was transferred to Iraklion in 1971.

knossos palace

Heraklion, aka ‘Iraklio’ is the capital city of the island of Crete, Greece’s largest island, and serves as one of the island’s primary urban centers. It is a popular cruise ship stop, and while this will give you only a tiny glimpse of Greece’s largest island, it is possible to really enjoy one day in Heraklion.

Renowned for its blend of medieval and modern architecture, Heraklion is steeped in rich history and cultural heritage, with roots tracing back to the Minoan civilization, as evidenced by the nearby Palace of Knossos, among other things.

Where do the cruise ships dock in Heraklio?

Cruise ships docking in Heraklion, Crete, primarily use the Heraklion Port, which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. This port is well-equipped to handle several large cruise ships at a time and is located conveniently close to the city center, offering easy access to Heraklion’s main attractions.

The disembarkation process in Heraklion, as in most ports, involves a few key steps:

Clearance Procedures: Upon arrival, the ship’s crew must complete port and customs clearances. Passengers usually wait on board until these formalities are completed.

Disembarkation: The disembarkation process is fairly straight forward with passengers disembarking in groups according to the ship’s schedule or their booked shore excursions. Most shipped tie up to the dock and passengers can walk right off.

Transport and Tours: Just outside the cruise terminal, passengers will find various transportation options, including taxis, buses, and sometimes shuttle services provided by the cruise line or local operators.

Security and Identification: Passengers are usually required to carry some form of identification (a passport or a government-issued ID) and their cruise ship pass for re-entry to the port and ship.

How to get around Heraklion

Visitors to Heraklion, the largest city on the island of Crete, Greece, have several options when it comes to exploring the city and its surrounds:

Walking : Heraklion’s city center is relatively compact, making walking a viable and enjoyable option for exploring. Many of the main attractions –  shops, museums, and restaurants are close together.

Public Buses : Heraklion has an extensive public bus system that connects the city center with the airport, port, nearby beaches, and other towns across Crete. Buses are a cost-effective way to travel, especially for longer distances outside of the city.

Taxis : Taxis are readily available in Heraklion and can be a convenient way to move around, especially if you’re traveling in a group or with lots of luggage. Some of them may be happy to say with you the whole day and proudly show you around their town. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey or ensure the meter is running.

Car Rentals : Renting a car will give you the flexibility to explore Heraklion and the surrounding areas at your own pace. Crete has many beautiful places that are easier to access with a car. Driving in Crete is fairly easy if you stick to the main roads and highways. There are some great road trips to enjoy, especially if you can stay a week or two!

Bicycles and Scooters : For short distances, renting a bicycle or a scooter can be a fun and efficient way to get around. This option offers greater flexibility and the ability to explore off-the-beaten-path areas.

Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Buses : Catching the red HOHO bus is a good way to see the city’s main attractions, allowing you to explore the sights at your own pace with various stops that you can visit.

One Day in Heraklion Activities

It is likely your cruise will offer several tours that you can do. This can be easy and convenient as you simply follow the instructions of the Guide or Activities Director and join the rest of the tour.

The downside to these tours is they are often more expensive than doing them independently, and they usually result in large crowds of people all descending on the same attractions at the same time. It also means you will be bound to the times dictated by the tour which may be at a slower pace than you would like, or perhaps too rushed.

As an alternative you can book some tours direct and these are the ones on offer that we think are the best value and the most enjoyable. Be sure to check the start and finish times to ensure they work with your ships schedule!

Knossos Palace Skip-the-line guided tour

The most important archaeological site in Crete and one of the most famous across the country if the Palace of Knossos.

First erected around 2000 BC in 1700 BC, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the Palace and a new one was built immediately, the most monumental of all. For over 300 years it represented the pre-eminent center of power in Bronze Age Crete and was an imposing complex with significant architectural innovations, splendid frescoes, hundreds of rooms across its four stories, impressive storage facilities & engineering, specialized workshops, and spacious courts hosting ceremonies and feasts.

It was the throne of King Minos and home to the Minotaur, who lived in its dungeons.

With this tour you will need to catch a taxi from the port but if you do it quickly you will beat the hundreds of cruise ship passengers who arrive by bus.

The price includes entry to the site, a licensed tour guide and a headset for easy audio. It is capped at 16 people per group.

Land Rover Safari on the Minoan Route

Explore the scenic landscape of Crete on an 8-hour Land Rover safari, and travel off-road along the old Minoan Path. Enjoy panoramic views during a barbecue lunch with unlimited wine on the Lassithi Plateau. Visit quaint villages, see the cave where Zeus was born, and lots more.

This tour does take 8 hours so be sure your ship’s schedule allows for this.

Food Tasting Walking Tour

Experience Heraklion like a local & explore the best the city has to offer. Learn about the culinary culture & wander in local neighborhoods as you eat and sip your way through authentic Heraklion.

Experience real Cretan food at 8 local-favourite stops away from the tourist crowds and sample local delights including unique Cretan cheeses, Heraklion’s bougatsa, the world famous Cretan olive oil and enjoy a glass of local wine and learn about the local wine making process that dates back to the Bronze Age

Sail Boat Cruise to Dia Island

Embark on a private cruise or a group trip to Dia Island and explore this rugged place with plenty of time to swim, snorkel, or relax on its pristine shores.  Enjoy fishing, swimming in the crystal clear water, taking a walk among the island’s cedar trees, or just relaxing in the quiet bay overlooking Heraklion.

Snorkeling and fishing equipment are provided for your comfort and convenience by the attentive crew, along with unlimited refreshments and seasonal fruits.

3 pm – Stop on the way back for a delicious lunch at Koukounari , one of the most authentic places on the island and hugely popular with locals.

5 pm – Explore Heraklion city. Wander the maze of streets around the harbour and the Venetian Fort. There is some good shopping to be found and very affordable too!

One Day Itinerary in Heraklion for families

9 am – Get the Palace and the Archaeological Museum out of the way before it gets too hot and crowded( do the Museum after the Palace)

11 am – Visit the Natural History Museum of Crete and/or the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology . Yes, it’s a lot of museums but families really do love these two!

1 pm – Head to a nearby beach. Amnissos Beach is only 10 minutes by taxi and is a designated ‘blue flag’ beach right behind the airport, with Arena Beach a little further than that. There are lots of bars, cafes, toilets, and sunbeds for hire. Active families may like to head out to Karteros Canyon which has lots of walking and hiking trails and is home to many herds of sheep, goats, and other animals.

5 pm – Explore the area around the harbour, the Rocca a Mare Fort, and perhaps a bit of shopping.

Have dinner at child-friendly places such as Lucky’s Souvlaki, Mama’s Restaurant, Cacio e Pepe and Avocado.

Highlands cruise schedule: More than 230,000 visitors expected to arrive this year

All the details of the cruise ships arriving in the north; from arrival and departure times to guest capacity.

Cruise ship docked in Invergordon in the Highlands.

The Highlands has become a top destination for travellers on cruises with more than 230,000 visitors expected through Invergordon this year.

Operated by Port of Cromarty Firth, the cruise terminal at Invergordon will see more than 110 cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers.

Among the vessels arriving into Invergordon is the newly-christened MS Queen Anne, operated by the Cunard Line, which will be making its first journey around the UK.

While the number of ships arriving into Invergordon will be lower than in 2023, the port authority says the vessels are much bigger with many more passengers.

Tourists explore Inverness after their cruise ship docks at Invergordon.

The port is expecting the 2024 cruise season to smash the previous annual passenger numbers with more than 230,000 descending on the Highlands from April to October.

Typically, passengers disembarking from ships get shuttled into Inverness to enjoy all that the Highland capital has to offer giving a major boost to local businesses.

Cruise companies due to dock at Invergordon include Viking, Marella, MSC and Aida, with five cruise ships making their inaugural call including the Queen Anne.

Here is a list of all the cruise ships scheduled to call at Invergordon in the next seven months.
