Live Review: Sam Smith @ AEC Arena, Adelaide

Smith’s 'GLORIA' tour creates a joyous space for queer love and body positivity.

“Welcome, welcome, welcome every single one of you.” Red devil horns dot the packed arena, looking on at Sam Smith like cartoonish evil eyes in the darkened room. Smith faces them down in sparkly golden platform heels, knowing full well that everyone in this room is more than grateful to be sharing the same space as the global popstar, “You’re lucky as fuck.”

Sam Smith officially kicked off the final run of GLORIA the tour at Adelaide/Kaurna Land’s AEC Arena last night. Australia and New Zealand will see the final six shows of the tour for 2023 over the next two weeks.

The crowd gets an early taste of what to expect with the Welcome to Country, where the speaker asks for a moment of silence for the lost members of the LGBTQIA+ community. But the sombre moment soon turns into a burlesque strip tease as the speaker, who’s accompanied by a two-metre plush Rainbow Serpent, strips off to reveal a red and black leotard with a glittering gold outline of Australia positioned front and centre – reminding everyone in attendance that tonight will be all about joy.

Opening the musical proceedings for the night is Australian artist Meg Mac , who proves to be a perfect vocal warm-up. With a simple three-membered band (including Mac’s little sister Hannah McInerney on backing vocals), Mac provides a soulful performance for the eager early crowd including hits Low Blows and Never Be .

Once the lights dim for the main event, a woman in gold appears looking as resplendent and powerful as the statue of the goddess Aphrodite that lays across the entire length of the stage. When Smith pops up in the middle of the stage in a golden corset and matching pants, the audience is more than ready. Opening with a familiar trio of favourites, Smith receives a few thousand lending hands on the chorus of Stay With Me , I’m Not The Only One and Like I Can . With a bow and a shoulder shimmy, the night starts off strong.

Smith takes the time to welcome the audience and promises everyone on stage will be giving it their all for the final seven shows of the GLORIA tour for 2023. The Grammy Award-winning artist sets the intention for the night, “This show is about one thing and one thing only. Tonight is about freedom,” before a strong rendition of 2017’s Too Good At Goodbyes .

The night’s performance is separated into three acts. Act I (Love) sees Smith return to the stage in a flowing white frilly shirt for the hopeful Perfect . A faux breeze ruffles Smith’s sleeves and the singer appears like a romantic heroine straight out of a period film with their thick beard and curled moustache (in gold platforms of course). Also featured in Act I, a track that hits back at toxic lovers How Do You Sleep? and Dancing With A Stranger, which Smith dedicates to anyone in the audience currently going through heartbreak.

Act II (Beauty) starts off with a flourish as Smith ascends a set of stairs in a white tulle ball gown and silver sequined top to deliver the piano ballad Kissing You , before letting the audience in on a sentimental story. “This part of the show is my absolute favourite part because I’ve been thinking about this moment for a very long time.” Smith alludes to the difficulties of COVID lockdowns as an artist who has been performing and singing on stage since they were eight years old. “I realised the reason that I do this is because…I get to spend my days with my friends…and I missed them more than anything else over those years.” The singer introduces one of their friends, vocalist LaDonna , as the crowd lights up for the heart-wrenching Lay Me Down . Love Goes sees the singer joined on stage by a glittering entourage of dancers and another friend, Patrick, who has been singing with the star for a decade.

A solo dancer is left on stage, caressing the dormant form of Aphrodite in a tender moment before the tone of the night truly changes.

The dancer begins to twerk and is quickly joined by Smith returning to the stage in a black sequined cowboy get-up for the steamy, house-infused hit Gimme . The stage is drenched in blue light for melancholy club tune Lose You , before the Calvin Harris -produced hit Promises has the arena up on its feet. It becomes clear this section of the performance is indebted to queer clubs, as Smith is draped in a fluffy, hot pink tulle coat as seen in the music video for I’m Not Here To Make Friends which samples RuPaul ’s famous self-love declaration. Smith then pulls out some voguing dance moves and powers through Disclosure hit Latch , before a rainbow-lit dance break to Donna Summer ’s I Feel Love , which sees the singer encircled by dancers as they strip off their shirt and revel in the sweaty dance tune.

A quick breather brings us to the final and most daring act of the night – Act III (Sex). Smith ascends from the depths of the stage one final time to a Songs of Praise-like chorus, draped in a white veil and crowned with gold-plated barbwire. Light is cast on the first few rows of worshippers at the alter of Smith’s Gloria , who may be left a little stunned as the veil comes off and the fish nets come out.

The worshippers are then welcomed to Smith’s “gay cabaret” as their devilish side is revealed for the history-making hit and performance closer Unholy .

As a non-binary artist who promotes body positivity, Sam Smith has faced a relentless slew of online vitriol throughout their career, simply for existing. Recent collaborator and friend of the artist Charlie XCX took to social media only a couple of weeks ago to call out the “disheartening” amount of hateful online comments she had noticed in the lead up to the release of their collaborative single In The City .

Despite this and perhaps even in spite of this, Smith’s GLORIA tour creates a joyous space for queer love and body positivity. Sam Smith has one of those voices that just simply can’t be ignored, and if the scale of this worldwide tour is anything to go by, it never will be.

Sam Smith announces intimate one-off gig in South Australia

They’ll perform outside the iconic d’Arenberg Cube in McLaren Vale, 40 minutes north of Adelaide

Sam Smith has announced a one-off show in South Australia, where they’ll deliver an intimate set outside the iconic d’Arenberg Cube in McLaren Vale, 40 minutes north of Adelaide.

Slated to go down sometime in January (the exact date is unconfirmed as of yet), the show will be held outdoors in the titular d’Arenberg winery. It’ll see Smith perform to a private crowd of only 300 punters, with tickets only accessible through a competition hosted by the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC).

Winners will be selected at random; they’ll receive two tickets to the gig, as well as flights to Adelaide from anywhere in the country (if they’re not already based there) and accomodation at a minimum-four-star hotel. The competition is open now, and will end a minute a before midnight on Sunday December 11 – you can enter it here .

The show was announced by the SATC on Instagram, with a video showing them sending Smith a series of tongue-in-cheek DMs that referenced several of their songs. They appeared to reply with a video message, in which they said: “Hey South Australia, this is Sam Smith here – how stunning that you slid into my DMs!

“I’m so happy to be performing, once again, in South Australia. I haven’t been there in so long, so I’m so excited to be there with you and experience everything there is to experience there. I’ll see you there!”

The show will come as part of a promotional tour that Smith is due to embark on in January, and at the time of writing, it’s the only performance they have locked in for the trip. It’ll be their first time Down Under in nearly three years; they last visited to perform an exclusive set at Sydney’s Mardi Gras in 2020, while their last proper tour took place in November of 2018.

Smith is currently gearing up to release their fourth album, ‘Gloria’ . As announced earlier this month , it’s primed to arrive on January 27, and will feature the singles ‘Love Me More’ and ‘Unholy’ , the latter of which is a joint effort with Kim Petras . In addition, the album will sport collaborations with Jessie Reyez , Koffee and Ed Sheeran .

Since its release in September, ‘Unholy’ has gone on to become rather monumental. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of October, making Smith the first openly non-binary artist – and Petras the first openly transgender artist – to achieve a Number One single in the US.

Sam Smith Announces Australia and New Zealand Tour

British pop superstar Sam Smith is bringing their ‘GLORIA the tour’ to Australia and New Zealand this year.

Beginning in Adelaide on Saturday, October 28th, Smith will then perform in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, before heading to New Zealand for a final stop in Auckland on Saturday, November 11th (see full dates below).

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, January 18th. The Frontier Members pre-sale begins on Monday, January 16th, while the Telstra Plus (AU) members pre-sale kicks off on Friday, January 13th.

“Both countries hold such a special place in my heart and we’re working hard on delivering an incredible show for you all!” Smith said about their upcoming Australian and New Zealand tour. “I can’t wait for you to see it and be with you all again soon.” It will be Smith’s first live shows in both countries since 2018.

The tour is in support of Smith’s forthcoming fourth studio album Gloria , which is scheduled for release on Friday, January 27th (pre-order here ).

The album contains the singer-songwriter’s huge hit “Unholy”, a collaboration with Kim Petras that topped the ARIA Singles Chart, as well as lead single “Love Me More”.

Gloria has been described by Smith as feeling “like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation.” “It was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again, for me. It feels like a coming of age,” Smith added.

Sam Smith  is bringing their global  Gloria  tour to Australia in late October and early November 2023. The UK pop star is playing shows in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The tour follows Smith’s latest album, 2023’s  Gloria , which includes the international smash hit ‘Unholy’, a collaboration with Deutsch queer icon Kim Petras.

Sam Smith Gets ‘Slutty’ Down Under for Private Show in Adelaide

Sam Smith teased details of their new album Wednesday, during an intimate private concert in South Australia.

On a balmy summer evening in Adelaide, the singer played an hour-long acoustic set sponsored by the South Australia Tourism Commission. The gig came in advance of Smith’s new album, Gloria , due out later this month , and also served to promote Smith’s 2023 Australian tour, which kicks off in Adelaide in October.

Introducing their 2022 single, “ Love Me More ,” Smith wrote that they wanted to release the empowerment anthem as the lead single from Gloria as a way to bridge the gap between their old music and new music. “I’ve had three albums of headache and self indulgence,” Smith told the crowd, “and while every day is still a struggle sometimes, I’m feeling a little bit happier now.”

The rapt audience began cheering as Smith ended on a high note: “Now,” they said, “we’re ready to make some slutty music.”

With that, the singer launched into a moody rendition of “Unholy,” their global number-one hit , which is still atop the charts in Australia.

“I didn’t realize how beautiful it was here,” Smith said, as the sun set behind the Cube and lights illuminated the seemingly unending rows of vines behind them. “I’m so excited to explore South Australia and check out the stunning beaches and wineries,” they added. “I can’t wait to welcome fans to South Australia to share in my new music and enjoy the destination with me.”

As the concert ended and Smith took a final bow, there were whispers in the crowd of an after-party with the singer backstage. Smith didn’t exactly offer an open invite but seemed to share in the sentiment: “This was such a fabulous night,” they said. “I can’t wait to have a drink.”

News: Sam Smith Confirms Return To Australia

(AUS) Frontier Touring have confirmed that four-time Grammy winner Sam Smith will return to Australia this summer, performing in arenas across the country on his biggest tour yet.

“Australia, I am so so happy to finally have some good news for you.. I can now announce that my cancelled IN THE LONELY HOUR tour dates have been rescheduled!! I’m unbelievably excited to get back onstage and perform for you all again, and I promise it will be so much better than it would have been before when my voice was damaged. The past few months have been incredibly difficult, but the support, love and patience my fans have shown me is absolutely unreal. I am so grateful to every one of you. Smith’s summer tour will begin at Perth Arena on Saturday 28 November before visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in early December. This will be Smith’s second headline tour of Australia, following his debut tour earlier this year which was unfortunately cut short following a vocal cord haemorrhage and subsequent surgery.

Smith’s career trajectory has been astounding; the transition from working seven days a week in a City of London bar just two years ago to becoming one of the biggest-selling artists in the world is testament to his strong work ethic, powerful vocals and inherent talent of translating universal emotions and experiences into cathartic masterpieces The 23-year-old Brit has gone from strength to strength since the release of his debut album In The Lonely Hour (out now through EMI Australia) which last week celebrated its one year anniversary and has sold more than eight million copies worldwide.

The record – filled with emotional anthems including ‘Stay With Me’ , ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and ‘Like I Can’ – has been in the top ten of the UK album chart since its release, having spent all but two weeks in the top five. Adding to the accolades, the ten-track release was the second highest-selling studio album of 2014 in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Smith’s appeal shows no bounds with both critics and audiences in awe of Smith’s live show; his debut show at New York’s Madison Square Garden earlier this year sold out in just half an hour. Void of the gimmicks, pyrotechnics or special effects normally associated with an arena-sized production, Smith’s finely-tuned and emotion-filled vocals and warm persona fill the biggest of rooms.

2024 LIV Golf Adelaide field: A look at the players and their rankings

T he 2024 LIV Golf Adelaide field is set with the passing of the typical Friday entry deadline. The LIV Golf field is set for this event, played at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.

The LIV Golf Adelaide field is headlined by the likes of Jon Rahm , Cameron Smith , Dustin Johnson , Brooks Koepka , Bryson DeChambeau, Anthony Kim and more.

This is set to be a 54-player field is played out over three days, with this event marking the sixth tournament of the 2024 LIV Golf League schedule.

The tournament is being played in its originally intended slot, as the sixth tournament of the series, with 13 teams of four and two wild-card players in the field, including Anthony Kim. Last year, this was LIV Golf's most popular event by far.

We do not have Monday qualifiers for this event, which will be played Friday through Sunday. Hudson Swafford and Anthony Kim will play this LIV Golf season as a wild-card player, without a team affiliation.

The alternate list for the week is set, with those players filling in based on withdrawals and availability.

Meg Mac to Support Sam Smith on Their 2023 Australian Tour

Sam Smith will bring the global tour behind their latest album, GLORIA , to Australia in October and November 2023. The UK pop star has named Meg Mac as the support act for the entire tour, which includes dates in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, as well as a splash across the ditch in Auckland.

Tickets for the tour went on sale in January and demand was sufficient to lead to the announcement of additional shows in Melbourne and Sydney. GLORIA , Smith’s fourth album, came out at the end of January and included the ARIA #1 single, ‘Unholy’, featuring Kim Petras.

Meg Mac – ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’

Meg Mac is no stranger to pole position on the ARIA charts, with her 2022 LP, Matter of Time , debuting at number one in September 2022. The album includes the singles ‘Letter’ and ‘Is It Worth Being Sad’, the latter of which features production from The Donuts, who have also worked with the likes of SZA, Joji, H.E.R. and more.

Sam Smith last visited Australia for the 2020 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Their most recent Australian headline shows were in support of their second album, The Thrill of It All , back in 2018.
