The term “motorcoach” has roots in the horse-drawn carriage. The ability to carry luggage and mail was a crucial feature in coaches of the old days. The modern application of the word was first applied to railway carriages in the 19 th century, and later to motorized vehicles.

A motorcoach, or over-the-road bus, is defined as a vehicle intended for long-distance transportation of passengers. The construction of the vehicle is characterized by an elevated passenger deck above a baggage compartment.

To be classified as a motorcoach, the vehicle must be at least 35 feet in length and carry a minimum of 30 passengers. Standard city transit buses, trolleys and streetcars do not fall under the definition of a motorcoach.

According to recent statistics, the motorcoach industry employs approximately 132,000 people and runs over 30,000 vehicles. Small companies offering fewer than 25 motorcoaches comprised 94 percent of all motorcoach companies.

The motorcoach industry is quite large. In 2012, the earliest year that data was recorded, the motorcoach industry in North America provided 637 million passenger trips.

Traveling by motorcoach is not the speediest option for long-distance overland travel, and that may be its only drawback. However, when every other aspect of long-distance transportation is considered, motorcoach often places itself as the more appealing option.

Driving can be stressful . Avoid stressful driving situations and opt for motorcoach travel. With a professional driver behind the wheel, one needn’t worry about maps, navigation, parking, back-seat drivers or other annoying distractions.
Motorcoach makes for great sightseeing . The best way to travel across the country is to enjoy the view while doing so. With two eyes either firmly on the road or staring at the bottom of a tray table, the grandeurs of nature remain unseen. When traveling by motorcoach, however, the beauty of the countryside is on glorious display.
You can sleep comfortably on motorcoach . Sleeping behind the wheel is out of the question. And on a plane, reclining a seat by only five degrees is not conducive to quality rest. Modern motorcoaches provide comfortable recliner seats without the drone of a jet engine right outside the window.
Travel by motorcoach is conducive to socializing . It is much easier to visit with friends and fellow travelers in a motorcoach than in any vehicle. There may be no better way to meet new people or spend time with friends or family than in the comfort of a luxurious motorcoach.
Entertainment is included. While many flights offer in-flight entertainment services, they often come with separate charges that can be quite expensive. These amenities are often included when traveling by motorcoach.

Is Motorcoach Cheaper than Other Transportation Methods?

In a new study asking if travel by motorcoach is better on the wallet than travel by train, the American Bus Association Foundation found that on a cost-per-passenger basis, travel by motorcoach was 25% less than comparable Amtrak service.

Motorcoach travel usually involves a large amount of people chartering a single vehicle. When dividing each traveler’s share of the cost, it can end up being much more inexpensive than other modes of transportation, including car and airplane.

To test this theory, we planned a hypothetical trip from Washington D.C. to New York . The bride and groom and thirty-five friends and family are traveling to the Big Apple for their dream wedding at the Prince George Ballroom.

We analyzed the lowest per person available air fare, train fare, cost by car and cost by coach and found the following:

Motorcoach travel is the most economical option. Though travel by car comes close, coordinating a convoy of dozens of vehicles doesn’t sound easy. Besides, motorcoaches provide a better environment for interacting with friends and family on the trip.

Something else to consider when evaluating cost is baggage. Traveling by either air or car severely limits the number and size of bags that can be stored. Although many airlines offer the ability to bring extra bags, this is often accompanied by significant fees. Motorcoach travel allows passengers to store bags below the passenger deck as well as the compartments overhead, which have much more room than overhead bins on airplanes.

Is Motorcoach Safer Than Other Transportation Methods?

Fatality rates per mode of transportation are measured per passenger-mile. It is important to compare the data this way because we are looking for information on fatalities, as opposed to vehicle crashes.

In analyzing the fatality rate per billion passenger-miles, the following information was gleaned:

Car – 7.2
Airplane – 2.3
Bus/Motorcoach – 2.0
Train – 0.2

Car travel is far more dangerous than other methods. If that same wedding party of thirty-five people were to drive to New York, they would need ten cars, rather than one plane or bus, greatly increasing the odds of an accident.

According to accident statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,

You are 1,097 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident when traveling by car than by motorcoach

Though train travel is far safer than any other transportation method, the numbers are a bit deceiving. Passenger train options are only available in a few areas of the country, mainly on either coast. If the average number of motorcoach passengers were to be ranked against the average number of train passengers, the safety factor seems to balance. Annually, seven times more people travel by motorcoach than by train.

Is Motorcoach Greener than Other Transportation Methods?

Viewing the beautiful countryside from the comfort of a motorcoach reminds passengers of the need to help keep such beauty intact. Every aspect of life can now be measured by the scale of one’s carbon footprint.

Today’s modern motorcoach has become much more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly than other methods of transportation. On a per passenger basis, motorcoaches are one of the cleanest ways to travel.

Considering the amount of people transported on a motorcoach , the mode of transportation is remarkably efficient. According to the most recent data for motorcoaches, their average fuel efficiency is 6.1 miles per gallon . While this may not sound like much, it must be viewed from the perspective of how many passengers they carry.

The industry average for motorcoach capacity is 39.3 passengers per vehicle. When comparing that measure to the average mile per gallon, motorcoaches achieve an average of 222.7 passenger miles per gallon (pMPG) of fuel.

When taking into account the number of passengers, motorcoach travel consumes far less energy than other modes of transportation. The raw data for carbon emissions also puts motorcoach at the top of the list.

Clearly, if measured by per passenger-miles per gallon or carbon dioxide emissions, motorcoaches are superior to other modes of transportation. Imagine that each motorcoach is replacing as many as 50 passenger cars on the road and it’s easy to see the impact.

While the data may slightly fluctuate by measuring an older fleet, motorcoach travel remains the greenest travel option. But is it the most luxurious?

Motorcoach Travel: Is it More Luxurious than Other Transportation Methods?

Motorcoach travel offers a level of comfort and luxury not readily afforded by other modes of transportation. While the passengers of a car may enjoy a movie on a mounted DVD player, the driver can’t enjoy that privilege.

Airplane travel offers more entertainment options at a cost, but falls short in the area of comfort. Modern motorcoaches provide plush seating with ample space. On a motorcoach, two full armrests are an attainable luxury.

Travel by motorcoach is expected to grow in the coming years. According to the ABA census report, year-over-year increases in motorcoach travel from 2011-2012 amounted to 1.7 percent a year, which represented a total of 6% over the prior two-year period.

Demand from travelers, group tours, and bus visitations are expected to generate more than $55 billion in economic transactions annually. Motorcoaches are also crucial to rural America, where there may be few or no alternative travel options. Motorcoaches serve over 14 million rural and mobility-impaired Americans.

Across North America, parks, restaurants, hotels, museums, monuments and other attractions all stand to gain from motorcoach tours. Able to market to 40 travelers at a time, motorcoach travel offers the best return on investment for most businesses.

Considering all other options, travel by motorcoach is the most inexpensive, safest, greenest and most luxurious form of travel available today. What’s the Difference Between a Bus and a Coach?

So you’ve heard the words coach, motorcoach, and charter bus thrown around, but how exactly are they different from a plain bus? There are actually quite a few differences between coaches and buses, including purpose, design, history, and amenities.

History of Buses and Coaches

Buses and coaches have similar origins starting in Europe during the 1600s as horse-drawn vehicles.

The term “bus” comes from the word “omnibus,” which originally referred to a horse-drawn carriage that served as a public bus line. One of the earliest iterations of an omnibus was launched in Paris in 1662, but they eventually spread throughout France and soon Great Britain, where the first bus line opened in 1824. Early motor buses were developed in the late 1890s but were not produced and used on a mass scale until 1910.

Modern coaches started with stagecoaches, also sometimes referred to as carriages. Horse-drawn stagecoaches often traveled pre-scheduled routes but could be hired for long-distance travel with a small number of passengers with light luggage. Great Britain was home to the first recorded stagecoach in 1610 that traveled between Edinburgh and Leith. Longer distance routes were developed between cities like London and Liverpool with coaching inns along the way for travelers to rest. Once railways were introduced in the 19th century, horse-drawn coaches became all but obsolete.

The earliest motorized coach was the charabanc, which was introduced in the 1920s and quickly became the preferred vehicle for companies that previously operated horse-drawn coaches.

Different Uses for Buses and Coaches

To keep it simple: All modern coaches are technically buses but not all buses are coaches. Both types of vehicles are used to transport a large number of passengers across different distances.

A bus usually refers to public transport or pre-scheduled transportation like transit (city) buses and school buses. Buses are usually built for efficiency and not necessarily comfort. They serve the public and travel along predetermined routes, making several stops along the way. The main purpose of a transit bus is to offer cost-effective transportation for as many passengers as possible within metro areas. Bus services can often be split into different categories like standard buses, which service normal routes and express buses, which often service fewer stops for faster rides.

A coach may also be called a motorcoach, coach bus, or charter bus. Smaller models may be considered minicoaches or minibuses. Unlike normal buses, coaches are primarily used for private transportation and are often used for long-distance travel where convenience and comfort are key. Coaches are usually private modes of transportation and travel on routes determined by the riders or trip organizers. Some intercity coach services like Greyhound travel along fixed routes and are open to the public via a ticketing system. Although the schedules of coach buses vary, most coaches don’t make more stops than necessary since many are traveling long distances.

Designs of Buses and Coaches

Vehicles like standard city buses are oftentimes a similar length and overall body style to coaches. However, buses that service public sectors can also come in modified designs like the articulated bus. These extended vehicles shave multiple cabins and optimize the number of passengers that can be transported along any given route. Transit buses also include standing areas and railings that can be used when seats fill with passengers. Most transit buses can accommodate anywhere from 40 to 60 passengers, depending on the model.

Straphangers for standing passengers
Dedicated seats at the front of the bus for passengers with mobility concerns
Ramps for passengers with mobility aids on ADA-accessible buses

Coaches have a raised floor that creates space underneath the bus for luggage storage, making it taller than your average transit bus. This gives the interior of coach buses a platform-like appearance compared to normal buses, and passengers have a raised view of the street. Coach buses usually have anywhere between 18 and 56 seats. Buses on the lower end of that range usually qualify as minibuses or minicoaches.

While a motor coach traditionally refers to a passenger road motor vehicle designed to seat 24 or more persons (including the driver), motor coach tourism is a guided coach tour over a short or extended journey, for a group of holidaymakers. It follows a regular or bespoke scheduled itinerary and is escorted by a tour guide.

Motor coach tourism, which emerged in the 1930s, boomed between the two world wars and during the early 1970s, after railway dominance but before airborne package tours (Walton 2011 ). As people sought to cheaply escape from home and search for something different, motor coach tourism made an important contribution toward developing national and international tourism across the United States and Europe. Coach travel has continued to be an important component of tourism and has developed strong links to tourism-related companies and destinations by building scheduled itineraries with accommodation providers, food service organizations, shopping malls, motorway...

We’ve always sanitised our custom luxury coaches before the start of your trip. Now, our coach hygiene practices are even stricter, following guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and government regulations. We’ve trained our drivers on the latest hygiene protocols and they clean and disinfect the coaches every day. That includes all surfaces in the coach, like seats, handrails, door handles, tables, overhead lockers and air-conditioning filters.

While we ask that you bring your own face masks and hygiene products, we also have additional face masks, antiviral wipes and spray, and rubber gloves available for guests on all trips.

Is coach travel green and responsible?

Coach travel isn’t just better for you – it’s also better for the environment. As the effects of climate change continue to impact our lives, more people are considering environmentally friendly travel. We know that increasing greenhouse gas emissions are linked to climate change and that transport like aeroplanes and cars have a large carbon footprint.

So what is the most eco-friendly way to travel and reduce your carbon footprint? The average coach journey produces 0.04 tonnes per 1,000 miles, compared to the average car which would produce 0.29 tonnes of CO2 per 1,000 miles. Travelling with a group coach tour can also be greener than trains when travelling domestically, as national rail services create 0.07 tonnes of CO2 per 1,000 miles per passenger.

The History of the Motorcoach

Motorcoaches, or buses as they are often simply known, are vehicles that most of us have had experience with at some point in our lives.

My kids have had numerous experiences in them, going to Williamsburg or Philadelphia, going to a game with the rest of the team, or some type of band competition. These vehicles have become hugely popular among schools, civic groups, or commuters, they provide a valuable transportation option that many people rely on… daily. Most have WiFi and electricity, videos play on screens, and bathrooms and microwaves make long trips incredibly comfortable.

That being said, motorcoaches have come a long way from their humble beginnings. The original coach was nothing like the coach we know today. In fact, they were simply horse-drawn carriages, until the early part of the 20th century when the first motorized versions were introduced.

The Charabancs (open sided large trucks with seats) were the first motorized coaches, although this was still nothing like the coaches we know and use today. Operators started purchasing fully enclosed vehicles in the late to mid ‘40’s and then on to the vehicles that resemble what we know today as the modern bus. Operators and owners began to consolidate and build fleets of buses in the early part of the 20th century and regular bus services exploded across the country. Over the mid to late part of the 20th century, some of the internal features that we see today in motor coaches began to be introduced, over seat storage, bathrooms, individual lights and reclining seats began to appear, albeit in a rather primitive fashion.

During the first few decades of the 20th century, motor coaches went through radical changes both in terms of design and features. By the latter part of the century, the motorcoach was a completely different vehicle than the ones that appeared in the 1920s. With the turn of the century, radical new designs began to appear with improved gas mileage, more comfortable seating, larger luggage stowage both under the main compartment and overhead. But with new materials that were both lighter and stronger sightlines were increased and incredible views through large tinted windows were now considered the norm.

Today, the motorcoach has evolved into a form of transportation that is not only reliable and efficient but is also able to offer the luxury and comfort that its earlier counterparts could never even dream of. From air conditioning and entertainment to reclining seats and spacious interiors, the modern motor coach has come a very long way since the first open-air trucks. What’s the Difference between a Bus and a Motorcoach?

In the travel industry, the terms “bus”, “charter bus”, and “motorcoach” are pretty much interchangeable. But there actually is a difference between them.

The term “bus” is generic and essentially describes the vehicle designed to carry many passengers at once. A “charter bus” is a bus hired for a particular trip, either local or long-distance. But a “motorcoach” generally refers to a bus that carries people long distances, such as from state to state or across the country.

Bus History

The first buses were used in Europe in the 17th Century. Obviously, they were horse-drawn rather than powered by gas engines (which hadn’t been invented yet). The term “bus” is actually a shortened version of “omnibus”, which originally was a horse-drawn carriage that was used for public transportation along an established route.

The first omnibus was used in Paris in 1662, but by the end of that century, they could be found in most major European cities. When the gas engine was invented in the late 19th Century, motorized buses slowly began replacing horse-drawn streetcars, stagecoaches, and other vehicles used to carry people.

Motorcoaches Today

Today, a motorcoach is a term technically used only for private transportation that carries people long distances, or essentially charter buses . While all modern motorcoaches are buses, not all buses are motorcoaches .

Features that distinguish motorcoaches from buses include:

A single entry door at the front of the vehicle
Storage compartments beneath the bus for luggage
Uniform rows of individual seats throughout the bus
A ramp or hydraulic wheelchair lift at the rear of the vehicle (for ADA-accessible coaches)

Because motorcoaches are designed for long-distance travel, they also typically feature additional comforts and luxuries that standard buses don’t, including plush reclining seats, WiFi, electric and USB outlets, TVs, overhead storage compartments, and individual panels with reading lights and personal climate control.

Motorcoach Resorts: Affluent Campers’ Luxury Destinations

For many RV owners, there’s nothing like “the simple life” at a remote campground or rolling across the open road for days on end. While it appears that the RV lifestyle has gone hand-in-hand with traditional camping for decades, a new trend has emerged in recent years—and this trend goes far beyond the popular “glamping” option.

Some RV owners want the biggest, flashiest, all-inclusive, “if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it” ride that’s nothing short of a mobile mansion. When it comes to RVs, bigger is always better.

The price tags on these beauties approach or even exceed $1 million – these aren’t your grandfather’s RVs. If you’re not a fan of the glamping trend, you should probably turn away now, because this place is oozing with luxury.

Big Rigs, Big Problems

However, there is one issue. Apart from being much more difficult to maneuver than most RVs, these behemoths are so large that they run afoul of some local ordinances. For vehicles over a certain length or weight (usually 45 feet or 26,000 pounds, respectively), several states require a commercial driver’s license, and even more have restrictions on which roads you can take a vehicle that large on.

For interstate travel in those states, you’ll need an oversized load permit. That’s a lot of effort, so these RV owners aren’t your typical road trippers. But, if car owners are spending so much money on their vehicles, where are they going?

On the Road, Unprecedented Luxury

This is where the “motorcoach resort” comes in. What is the definition of a “motorcoach resort”? These luxury RV resorts can be found all over the country, from Florida’s beachfront relaxation to Montana’s beautiful lakes and mountains to Nevada’s sprawling desert (here’s a look at some of the best).

In fact, they can be found in almost every state. What distinguishes a motorcoach resort from a typical RV park? They have golf courses, marinas, private hot tubs, theaters, wineries and even concierge service. These resorts also have concierge service.

To put it another way, they’re much more than just a parking spot. The majority of them have clubhouses that are comparable to those found at top country clubs, as well as enclosed kitchen and dining areas. In a nutshell, each RV is like a mini-condo.

All of this opulence comes at a (hefty) cost.

Of course, the old adage “you get what you pay for” applies here as well. All of this opulence comes with a price tag. For most people, owning a spot at one of these resorts will cost about the same as owning a small home, with prices beginning in the low six figures.

The exclusivity of these locations is a major selling point, which is why you’ll see prices as high as $600,000 or even higher! One lot at “The Villas at Desert Shores” will cost you that much.

It’s a 1,200-square-foot lot with a private waterfall pool grotto, sunken entertainment area, covered BBQ bar, great room, kitchen (with walk-in pantry), and wine chiller, so it might be worth it!

At Desert Shores, a more modest unit costs $295,000. (but that still gets you a private pool, granite kitchen, fireplace and more).

Don’t want to make a purchase? First and foremost, you must rent.

If purchasing a spot at a motorcoach resort is out of your price range, many locations will rent you a spot by the night, week, or even month. Because there’s a good name to keep, your car or truck needs to be in good shape and the right length to keep people happy.

If you can feel like a millionaire for as little as $100 per night by renting, you can feel like a millionaire.If you choose a high-end resort during peak season, your nightly rent will most likely be $200 or more. And you might not have to travel far to find this way of life. Many traditional RV parks are renovating and upgrading portions of their grounds to include bus-specific amenities (as these oversized vehicles are called). When you add a security guard and a gate, you’ve got instant exclusivity.

According to Scott Hunter, sales coordinator at Ancira RV near Fort Worth, Texas, customers who spend more than $1 million on a vehicle almost always pay in cash, and they only use their RVs a few times a year.

It’s clear that these resorts aren’t designed for the average business owner. These resorts are for people who want to enjoy the outdoors in a private setting without having to leave their opulent mansions.

RV vs. Motor Coach: Which Is Better?

“Homes on wheels” come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This is why selecting the right rig can be a bit daunting. There’s also a lot of different terms too. You’ve probably wondered, RV vs. Motor Coach: which is better?

A motor coach is a type of RV but is a larger, luxury Class A RV. It comes with many advantages over smaller motorhomes and towable RVs. It has more amenities, better sleeping arrangements, and is able to accommodate more people.

There are different types of RVs , such as motor coaches, travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, truck campers, and pop-up trailers.

Each type has its pros and cons. Each type also fits certain people and budgets. In this article, we’ll look at some of the best quality motorhomes, the worst RV brands, the travel trailers that last the longest, and similar issues around choosing the best RVs.

What is the difference between a motor coach and an RV?

A motor coach, sometimes called a coach, is a large Class A style bus and is completely self-contained. Other types of RVs include Class C, Class B, and towables such as a travel trailer or fifth wheel.

All motor coaches and motorhomes are RVs, but not all RVs are motor coaches.

An RV is essentially a motorhome (motorcoach) or a trailer with built-in amenities of a home or one that’s being towed. Motorcoaches are not towed. They are motorized units equipped with beds, a kitchen, restrooms, etc.

And a motor coach is going to be larger than most RVs, more like a tour bus used by popular bands.

Motorcoaches are almost always more expensive than trailers because they are self-contained motorized units that offer the ambiance and comfort of home even while you are on wheels.

They are usually long and spacious, although many fifth wheels can be too.

There is usually a sleeping space that can accommodate 2 to 8 passengers. And, you can use these comforts even while it’s being driven.

If it were a trailer, you’d have to park first before your partner can use the restroom!

What are the best quality motorhomes?

American Eagle 45K, Coachmen Concord, Dynamax, Holiday Rambler, Leisure Travel, and Newmar offer some of the most upscale motorhomes in the market. They perform well on the road and are stylish and durable.

Many of these brands also offer more options such as more space, more gadgets and have integrated the latest technology to make life easier for RVers.

Holiday Rambler Nautica MS

From the outside, it’s got a compact and alluring look. It’s even more beautiful when you step inside. It has an entertainment center, patio-side dinette, and a full-featured residential galley.

There’s a large wardrobe and a spacious master bedroom. The Nautica 35MS is the largest in its class. It’s built on the all-new Delta Chassis. It’s a gorgeous blend of state-of-the-art engineering and beauty.

Newmar Bay Star

Newmar Bay Star is a Class A motorhome. This is what I own.

So, it’s upscale and spacious. The interior is so beautiful, and it’s got a “presidential” feel to it. There are many different floor plans, including at least 1 with bunk beds.

High-quality cabinets, drawers that auto-close, flatscreen TVs that are on “televators” that can raise or lower down into a fixture are just a few of the better features.

It’s powered by a 7.3-liter V 8 and is built on Ford’s new F-series chassis.

What are the worst RV brands?

As a general rule, the RV brands that hold their value the worst or get the most criticisms on RV forums include:

Forest River

But the reality is that it depends on how deep you dig. You’d find folks complaining about even some of the best brands.

Airstream is probably the only exception.

It’s vital to note that brands have many models, so it’s good to pay attention to the particular model one’s considering and do a deep dive on it and not just dismiss it simply because some folks have complained about the brand.

Let’s pick a brand and check out examples of what folks aren’t really happy about.

Here are some details based on forum posts from a wide variety of RV owners.

The battery is not as efficient as it should while charging
The wall and the fake leather upholstery peels
The placement of switches and control panels are awkward and so hard to reach
The leveling jack breaks

Jayco, Winnebago, and Airstream are some of the best travel trailer brands that last the longest. These manufacturers focus on functionality, durability, and longevity, and they have been in the business for decades.

Some relatively new brands are equally durable.

They are very strong.

The company tests its prototypes, raw materials, finished parts, and completed trailers to ensure that its products are of high quality, perform very well, are durable, and long-lasting.

Say you’re thinking of a Class A motorhome or a travel trailer: which one’s better?

Luckily, that’s what I explored in a recent article of mine. I said that Class A Motorhomes are great for families who travel often, while travel trailers are good for smaller families who do weekend getaways.

What type of RV holds its value best?

Class C and B RVs hold their value the best. Class A RVs depreciate much faster, as do travel trailers. But Airstream trailers hold their value well. The type of RV that loses the most value are pop-up campers.

Then, if we’re talking brands, Airstream, Jayco, and Winnebago hold their value best. They have been manufacturing RVs for decades and offer top-of-the-line products.

It’s important to factor in what you want from a rig in choosing any of these top brands.

If you’d like one with a lot of space, perhaps because you’ve got 3 kids, there’s no point buying a rig that’s only ideal for two people, right? So, you’d need to dig a bit deep to know the features of each.

I’d go for an Airstream any day. To know how well-made and durable it is, consider that 75% of Airstreams made in 1931 are still in use .

That’s 80 years afterward! And there’s always a long waiting list of folks ready to buy them second-hand when they are available. They are usually sold in hours or days after they’re available for sale.

So you’d like to live in an RV?

That’s exactly what I wrote about in a recent article of mine where I explained that it’s best to get yourself Class A for traveling and a fifth wheel for longer stays at campgrounds. And to plan to buy a new one in January or a late model that is 1-2 years old.

In the article, we looked at the difference between an RV and a motorcoach. A motorcoach is an RV, but not all RVs are motor coaches.

We learned about the best quality motorhomes and the worst brand of RVs. We also checked out the travel trailers that last the longest and what type of RV holds its value best.

Onboard Restrooms

Motorcoaches in Europe and North America are equipped with an emergency restroom. For transfers and sightseeing in London, this amenity is not available. We use the term “emergency restroom” because this amenity is not intended for use in lieu of the restrooms at your hotel or frequent comfort stops throughout the day.

2024 NFL Draft: Los Angeles Chargers select Michigan LB Junior Colson, reuniting him with coach Jim Harbaugh

Jim harbaugh drafted one of his former michigan standouts on friday.

The Los Angeles Chargers selected Michigan star linebacker Junior Colson with the No. 69 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday, setting up a reunion with Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh. The new Chargers coach left his alma mater to make the jump back to the NFL shortly after leading Michigan to the 2023 national title.

Colson finished the 2023 campaign with 95 total tackles and two pass deflections for the Wolverines and played a significant role in the school's first national championship since 1997. Colson finished with 10 tackles in a Rose Bowl win over Alabama and recorded six tackles in the College Football Playoff title game against Washington .

Colson is the fourth Michigan player to hear his name called at the draft. Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy was selected with the No. 10 pick by the Vikings on Day 1. On Friday, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (No. 49) and cornerback Mike Sainristil (No. 50) were selected with back-to-back picks in the second round.

Before Day 2 of the draft began , Michigan's 2024 national championship team was honored by the NFL. Members of the squad walked to the stage with the CFP trophy as Michigan's fight song, "The Victors" played in front of nearly 200,000 in attendance at the NFL Draft in Detroit, Michigan -- located less than 50 miles from Michigan's Ann Arbor campus.
