Abhishek, Riyan named in Shubman Gill-led India squad for Zimbabwe T20Is

Gill will lead the India team in Zimbabwe

India have called up Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag for their five-match T20I tour of Zimbabwe. Shubman Gill has been named captain of a youthful squad which also features the likes of Tushar Deshpande and Dhruv Jurel.

Nitish Reddy's all-round potential also saw him receive his maiden India call-up** but he was later ruled out of the tour with an injury . Shivam Dube was named his replacement.

Full squad: Shubman Gill (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube

Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma gets his maiden call-up after an impressive IPL season this year, where he ended up as the highest six-hitter (42 in 16 games) in the tournament. Riyan Parag, who ranked third (573 runs) in the run-getters list in what was his breakthrough season with Rajasthan Royals, also makes his way into the squad for the first time. That both batters are also handy spin option only added to their case.

The stocks for Dhruv Jurel, who had an impressive start to his Test career with a handful of high-pressure knocks against England, continue to rise. However, Jurel had an underwhelming IPL this year but his abilities as a lower-order hitter seems to have boosted his case.

Tushar Deshpande is the other uncapped player in the list and the Mumbai pacer has impressed with his domestic performances apart from consistent back-to-back seasons with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

The rest of the squad contains the usual suspects who, by default or design, have made regular appearances for India in the past 24-36 months. Sanju Samson is expected to be the primary wicket-keeper batter, with Jurel as the back up option. Ruturaj Gaikwad is back in the mix and it will be interesting to see where he bats, given that skipper Gill is also an opening batter. With Yashasvi Jaiswal also in the mix, one of the trio might have to bat at three.

Meanwhile, Khaleel Ahmed is set for a potential comeback after being named in the squad. The left-arm pacer did make it to the travelling reserves of the T20 World Cup squad but hasn't played an international match since 2019. Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar are the other pace options in the side while Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi are the specialist spinners in the squad.

The tour kicks off on July 6 at the Harare Sports Club, which will also host the remaining four matches over the course of next 8 days.

'Shaheen Afridi ko drop kiya magar Babar Azam…': Former cricketer questions Pakistan team selection for second Test against Bangladesh

N EW DELHI: Pakistan left out star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi for the second Test match against Bangladesh starting in Rawalpindi on Friday, with Pakistan's head coach Jason Gillespie saying he will be rested to allow him to spend time with his new-born son and family.

Bangladesh upset a formidable home team with a clinical ten-wicket display in the first Test -- their first win in over 14 encounters against Pakistan, as Afridi struggled to find his rhythm through much of the innings.

Now former Pakistan batsman Ahmad Shahzad has questioned the decision to drop Afridi from the team.

Taking to his official X handle, Ahmad Shahzad said in a video, "You first lost to Zimbabwe, then lost to Ireland, lost to USA, lost to India, now you have lost to Bangladesh as well. Is Shaheen Afridi only responsible for all these defeats? No, he is not solely responsible. All should be questioned who were involved in these defeats. Tell this country. Holding Shaheen Afridi alone responsible for all the defeats is wrong. Look at his performances, there's a problem in his attitude, you dropped him, that's fine. But what about others? What about their performances? What is the performance of Abdullah Shafique in the last 8 matches? You have brought in Saim Ayub back after 25 matches, what's his performance? What's the performance of Babar Azam in the last 14 innings in Tests?"

"So by dropping only Afridi will not Pakistan on the right track, you will have to take some harsh decisions. And those who have been involved in these defeats with poor performances should also be questioned. They also should be held accountable, because nobody is beiger than cricket or the country. Country comes first, everything comes after that. No matter how are their public relations, no matter how much they hide behind their personal milestones, no matter how much money they put in, but we know everything and those who are at the helm of affairs in the PCB, their also know everything. So the time has come that not just one, if you really want to move in the right direction, question all those who have been involved. Things will not work like this," Ahmad Shahzad said.

Pakistan have been struggling through a lean spell of late, bowing out early in this year's T20 World Cup. Their last Test series was a whitewash in a three-match tour to Australia.

The home team have recalled spinner Abrar Ahmed after going with an all-pace attack in the first Test.

Former Australian pacer Gillespie admitted it will be a challenge to square the series, but he backed under-pressure skipper Shan Masood who failed with the bat with six and 14 in the first match, and has lost all four of his Tests as captain.

Pakistan were rattled by the Bangladesh response to their first-innings total of 448-6 declared, crumbling for a paltry 146 in their second outing.

A brilliant 191 by Mushfiqur Rahim on a flat Rawalpindi pitch helped the visitors rack up their highest-ever total against Pakistan of 565 to take a crucial 117-run first-innings lead.

Spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4-21) and Shakib Al Hasan (3-44) then rocked the hosts and made them rue not playing a frontline spinner.

Since gaining Test status in 2000, Bangladesh have only won two of their 32 overseas series with wins in the West Indies (2009) and Zimbabwe (2021), drawing three and losing 27.

Bangladesh's pace attack will be boosted by the return of experienced Taskin Ahmed who recovered from a shoulder injury but will have a tie with Nahid Rana for a place in the eleven.

England home schedule for 2025: West Indies, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe to tour

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released the list of fixtures for England men's and women's home summer in 2025, with some mouth-watering clashes in store.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released the list of fixtures for England men's and women's home summer in 2025, with some mouth-watering clashes in store.

On Thursday (August 22), the ECB announced the fixture list for next summer, including visits from the men’s team of India and the West Indies, as well as Zimbabwe for a Test match for the first time in over 20 years. That match is also significant thanks to the historic move by the ECB to pay Zimbabwe a touring fee, making them the first to do so in modern-day bilateral cricket.

England's men's and women's sides will also play two series alongside each other. England Women will kick off the summer on May 21, taking on the West Indies in a white-ball series comprising of three T20Is followed by three ODIs.

England Men will play Zimbabwe in their Test match from May 22. After that game, England will host the West Indies for three ODIs and three T20Is from May 29, running alongside the corresponding women's series.

Similarly, England Women and Men will take on their Indian counterparts in simultaneous series. The men will play a five-match Test series in order at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford and The Oval. The women's five T20Is and three ODIs will take place in between these matches.

The home international summer will come to an end in early September, with England Men welcoming South Africa for three ODIs and three T20Is. The team will then travel to Ireland for a three-ODI series from September 17.

In a historic move, it has also been confirmed that India Women will return to England in the summer of 2026 for a one-off Test match at Lord's, making it the first ever women's Test match there.

WBBL and BBL drafts - all you need to know

  • ESPNcricinfo staff

The BBL and WBBL drafts will take place soon, where the eight clubs in each competition will secure overseas players for the 2024-25 season. Here's everything you need to know about how it will work.

When will the draft take place?

It all happens on September 1. The WBBL draft will take place first, starting at 3pm AEST, followed straight after by the BBL draft.

What order do the teams pick in?

This was determined by a weighted lottery a few months ago, based on last season's finishing positions. In the WBBL, Hobart Hurricanes came out with pick No. 1 and Perth Scorchers last with pick No. 8. In the BBL, Melbourne Stars will have first pick and Sydney Sixers the eighth one.

There are four rounds in all. Round one involves Platinum players only; round two Platinum and Gold; round three Gold and Silver; and round four Silver and Bronze.

In the BBL, Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder have traded their second-round picks as part of Wes Agar's move to Thunder. So, in that round, Strikers have pick 11 and Thunder pick 13. In the WBBL, Strikers have traded picks 19 and 30 to Melbourne Renegades, getting picks 22 and 27 in return

The third round (gold and silver) of each draft goes in reverse order. So, in the WBBL, Scorchers will have consecutive picks at 16 and 17 and in the BBL Sixers will have the same.

The round one WBBL order reads: 1 Hobart Hurricanes, 2 Sydney Sixers, 3 Melbourne Renegades, 4 Melbourne Stars, 5 Sydney Thunder, 6 Adelaide Strikers, 7 Brisbane Heat, 8 Perth Scorchers

The round one BBL order reads: 1 Melbourne Stars, 2 Melbourne Renegades, 3 Sydney Thunder, 4 Hobart Hurricanes, 5 Adelaide Strikers, 6 Brisbane Heat, 7 Perth Scorchers, 8 Sydney Sixers.

How many overseas players will be drafted?

Each team will need to draft a minimum of two overseas players on top of their pre-signed names, meaning they can pass in only one round. The new mechanism was introduced this season to allow clubs in both competitions to sign one player before the draft and on multi-year deals if they wish. All the clubs have already taken advantage of this option.

During the draft itself, the clubs will need to nominate which round their pre-signed overseas players are allocated to, based on the value of their contract. While many of them will be Platinum - the highest paid - that won't be case for all. Renegades, for example, have already confirmed that Tim Seifert won't be a Platinum pick. It's also understood that in the WBBL, Brisbane Heat allrounder Nadine de Klerk will go in one of the lower bands.

Clubs can sign a fourth overseas player during the draft if wanted, but they would be considered a replacement player. A maximum of three can be fielded in an XI.

Replacement players can also be signed after the draft but have to come from those who have nominated, unless the tournament technical committee approves them under special circumstances, as happened with Nat Sciver-Brunt last season.

Full list of pre-signed players

Adelaide Strikers : Smriti Mandhana, Ollie Pope Brisbane Heat : Nadine de Klerk, Colin Munro Hobart Hurricanes : Lizelle Lee, Chris Jordan Melbourne Renegades : Hayley Matthews, Tim Seifert Melbourne Stars : Marizanne Kapp, Tom Curran Perth Scorchers : Sophie Devine, Finn Allen Sydney Sixers : Amelia Kerr, Akeal Hosein Sydney Thunder : Chamari Athapaththu, Sam Billings

So how much are the players paid?

There are four price bands. These figures are in Australian dollars.

WBBL Platinum: $110,000 (depending on availability) Gold: $90,000 Silver: $65,000 Bronze: up to $40,000

BBL Platinum: $360,000-$420,000 (depending on availability) Gold: $300,000 Silver: $200,000 Bronze: up to $100,000

Can players be retained by their previous team?

Yes, each club gets one retention pick. The basic example of a player who can be retained is one who played for the club the previous season. But there are other ways players qualify for retention. If they were signed last year but did not play (such as Danni Wyatt at Scorchers), they can be retained this year. When a club confirms which round their pre-signed player places into, that classes as their pick in that round and therefore they can't then also use their retention.

What is player availability like?

Both competitions have now been reduced to 40-game regular seasons, with the WBBL's new structure coming into effect this year after the BBL in 2023-24. There's more of a squeeze on the WBBL this year while the BBL faces its usual headwinds from rival T20 leagues (SA20 and ILT20) and international cricket.

The WBBL starts just seven days after the T20 World Cup finishes. There's also various bilateral cricket at either end of the competition. India are due to play New Zealand straight after the World Cup while South Africa face England, which overlaps with the finals. England players selected for that tour will leave the WBBL but some South Africans, including Marizanne Kapp, will be available throughout and miss the T20Is.

In the BBL, it's even more of jigsaw puzzle although most of the pre-signed players have committed to a full season including the finals (that is a requirement for the 2025-26 season onwards, but optional for this one). Last season's finals were decimated by an exodus of players to the UAE. However, some that are signed in the draft itself will again likely leave early with a host of them stating availability of six to nine games.

The fixture congestion has been amplified for this season because the ILT20 has moved forward to make room for the Champions Trophy in February and will start on January 11, two days after the SA20 starts.

When do the competitions take place?

The WBBL runs from October 27 to December 1 and the BBL from December 15 to January 27.

England reveal blockbuster schedule for 2025 summer

West Indies, Zimbabwe, India, and South Africa will tour the country in a packed schedule for the 2025 season.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced next year's schedule for their Men’s and Women’s teams. England’s home season traditionally runs from April to September and the coming year promises scintillating battles in the red and white-ball formats.

The England Women’s side will kick off their home season with bilaterals against the West Indies. The teams will engage in a three-game T20I series from 21 May to 26 May, followed by as many ODIs from 30 May to 7 June.

This is followed by a five-match T20I series against India starting 28 June. They will then battle the Women in Blue in a three-game ODI series.

The ODIs will be an important preparation ahead of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025.

#WWC17 Final: England v India match highlights

The England Men’s side will also host West Indies and India in white-ball and red-ball contests respectively. Their schedule also features African opponents, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Zimbabwe will feature in their first-ever Test in the country since 2003, playing a one-off Test against the Lions at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. England Men’s side then takes on the Men in Maroon, who featured in a three-match Test series this year.

The two sides will play six white-ball internationals, encompassing three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs, running from 30 May to 10 June.

The India Men’s side return to England for a five-match Test series. The last time the two sides met in the format in England, the engaging series ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Men’s summer draws a close with a three-match ODI and T20I series against South Africa in September.

Highlights: Best of Nat Sciver | CWC22

Richard Gould, the ECB Chief Executive Officer, was excited at the prospect of England Men’s and Women’s schedule running simultaneously with identical opponents.

“Staging England Men’s and England Women’s series alongside each other has been popular with fans and supported the continued growth of the women’s game, with both the Ashes last year and the Pakistan series earlier this year proving successful.

“I’m excited we’ll be doing the same again for the West Indies and India series next year."

Gould also announced that England Women will face-off against India in the first-ever Women’s Test at Lord’s in 2026.

“I’m also delighted we can confirm that India Women will return in 2026 to take on England Women in the first-ever women’s Test match at Lord’s. It will be a truly special occasion, and one of real significance.”
