The Best Ireland Tours

Getty Images

No matter how you like to travel, Ireland has you covered. Museums? Check. Historic sites? Check. Hikes? Check. Horseback riding? Check. Scenic drives? Check. Surfing? Check. (Yes, seriously.) It's hard knowing exactly where to begin, given you have centuries of history to review and a near endless list of must-see sights. That's why a multiday guided tour can be your best option for a first-time visit to Ireland . U.S. News consulted both traveler opinion and expert input to select some of the best multiday tours of Ireland. Whether you have a long weekend or two weeks to spend, there's an outing here for you.

Though it's all one island, Ireland is broken into two entities: the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. You'll need your passport to travel between the two. Plus, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland use two different currencies: the euro and pound sterling, respectively. The costs of these tours may vary based not only on what's included in the tour, but also on the number of people participating. In general, the fees listed below are per person when booking a room for double occupancy. Contact your chosen company for a more precise rate.

Short tours: 5 or fewer days

Medium tours: 6 to 9 days, long tours: 10 or more days.

Little Gem Tours – Ring of Kerry Private Tour

Price: Varies Duration: 3 days

As the name implies, this short and sweet tour explores the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. You'll see plenty of natural scenery, including Mount Brandon, the Skellig Islands, the Gap of Dunloe and Killarney National Park. There are also a few historic sites along the way like Ross Castle, Muckross House & Gardens and the Rock of Cashel. Driver/guides transport you to the sites in either a comfortable car (think: sedan or small SUV) or a luxury coach for large groups. Travelers say Little Gem lives up to its name thanks to competent tour guides and outstanding itineraries.

Because this is a private tour, the cost will vary depending on the number of people traveling and accommodation needs. Accommodation options range from bed-and-breakfasts to five-star hotels. Breakfast is included, but other meals and activity fees are not. What's more, you can customize the tour to your liking. Little Gem offers other tours of Ireland – both public and private – that last up to 15 days.

Rabbie's – Causeways, Cliffs & Castles: An Adventure in the North of Ireland

Rabbie's Tours includes transportation throughout the tour in an air conditioned coach. Meals, entrance fees to attractions and accommodations are not included. You can book accommodations through Rabbie's: fees start at 55 pounds (about $71) for two people sharing a room in Northern Ireland, while it costs 55 euros (about $60) for two people sharing a room in Ireland. Accommodations include bed-and-breakfasts and hotels. Breakfast is typically included with your room.

At the cottage, you'll have access to a full kitchen and a continental breakfast – complete with freshly baked bread – each morning. Want eggs with brekkie? No problem: You are welcome to venture to the on-site farm to grab fresh eggs from the resident chickens. Tourgoers say the whole experience is unforgettable and consistently say guides (no matter who they toured with) are exceptional.

The fee includes accommodations, daily breakfast and a personal driver/guide for your outings. Love Irish Tours offers a range of other private outings as well as coach tours and self-driving tours.

G Adventures

G Adventures

G Adventures About Us Started by Bruce Poon Tip in the year 1990, G Adventures transformed from a young man’s vision into a global conglomerate in a very short amount of time. As an enthusiastic and passionate traveler, Bruce dreamt of sharing his travel experience with the world. Giving birth to G Adventures with nothing but personal credit cards, this one-man army soon emerged with over 2000 employees spread over 23 different offices all over the world. Now catering to more than 150000 travelers each year, G Adventures is truly one of the largest and most passionate tour operators out there. A Sense of Adventure Ever had that overpowering feeling of heading off to an adventure after watching movies like Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider? Adventure travel has a way of making you fall in love with the world, helping you discover yourself and learn unique skillsets as you explore the planet, meet new people and get your adrenaline pumping. G Adventures will help you do all that. Smaller Groups One of the biggest issues that most group travelers face is the group size. Most tour operators conduct tours in large groups which could spoil the entire experience. This is what makes G Adventures so different. We specialize in offering tours in smaller group sizes at some of the most exclusive places in the world, all at the best prices. A smaller group simply opens up your itinerary a little more, making it more accessible, proving security and companionship and offering enriching experiences with complete strangers. Travel Responsibly The world is a beautiful place to be in and traveling is probably the greatest gift that we can offer to ourselves and our loved ones. Enjoying a destination and becoming a part of its beautiful culture is a great thing to do, but it is equally important to ensure that you’re giving back to the community. From choosing local businesses and developing community based rural travel projects to offering disaster relief services and preventing animal abuse, G Adventures truly operates with the belief that travel is a medium of exchange, which means that they try and give back as much as possible to the local community. Quality Service As one of the most reputed travel operators on the planet, G Adventures is all about making your tours feel extra special. The company is a proud recipient of numerous awards, many of which highlight exactly how travel operators should be run. Some of the awards received by G Adventures include Baxter Travel Media Canada's Favourite Adventure Tour Operator, Readers Choice Best National Adventure Operator in Canada, Vacation.com Canada Specialty Tour Operator Partner of the Year and National Geographic Traveler's Tours of a Lifetime. So the next time you get one of those pangs, that lust for an adventure of a lifetime, all you have to do is choose your favorite destination, select your preferred G Adventures tour and dive into a world of mystery, excitement and endless fun. The Dingle Peninsula walk combines green pasture valleys, hills and coastal tracks and this combination makes it very special. The maps and information provided is accurate and detailed. Still, what we liked the most was the friendliness of everyone we met along the way and in the accommodation provided.

Excellent -   Anonymous

The Dingle Way exceeded all expectations. It was a family trip to remember in a beautiful area. The route takes you off of major routes and you feel in an isolated little corner of Ireland, even though it's a well visited peninsula. We had one day of extreme mud and 6 days of beautiful weather. Rain jackets are a must but we got away with trail running shoes. Pictures do not do this place justice and the BnBs were superb!

Utracks specializes in winter adventure, walking tours, trekking and hiking & beach and offers 2 trips in Ireland with 13 reviews .

Let the magic of France unfold before you. Explore the 10 Best France Tour Companies that promise an unforgettable French experience. Your journey through the heart of France begins here.

Ireland, known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is a welcoming destination. English is widely spoken, and the official currency is the Euro. The weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof gear. Familiarize yourself with local customs, such as the importance of greetings and the pub culture. Driving is on the left side of the road, and public transportation options are available in cities.

The ideal duration for touring Ireland depends on your preferences and the areas you want to explore. A week allows you to cover highlights like Dublin, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Ring of Kerry. For a more comprehensive experience, a 10–14-day trip lets you delve into both popular and off-the-beaten-path destinations, immersing yourself in the Irish charm.

The best way to tour Ireland largely depends on your preferences. Renting a car offers flexibility to explore remote areas and scenic routes, while guided tours provide informative insights into Irish history and culture. Public transportation is efficient in cities, and a combination of methods might suit different parts of your journey.

To travel to Ireland, ensure you have a valid passport. If you’re from the European Union or European Economic Area, an ID card may be sufficient. Non-EU/EEA visitors may need a visa, depending on their nationality. Travel insurance, proof of accommodation, and a return ticket are also advisable. Check the latest entry requirements from the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) before your trip.

The best time to visit Ireland is during the late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, the weather is milder, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant. However, be prepared for occasional rain at any time. Winter (December to February) offers fewer crowds, but some attractions and services may have reduced hours.

For many nationalities, obtaining a visa to Ireland is relatively straightforward. If you’re from a visa-exempt country, you can stay up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes without a visa. However, it’s crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality on the INIS website and apply well in advance if needed. Overall, the process is generally manageable for most travelers.

1. What is Ireland known for?

Read more cool things about Ireland on our experts' blog.

2. What's the weather like in Ireland?

The weather conditions in Ireland can change quickly and often in all regions of the country. Although the climate isn’t extreme, the locals are fond of saying that you can experience all four seasons in a day. Make sure to dress the part and nothing will stop you from enjoying your trip!

3. How many castles are in Ireland?

From grand historic castles to atmospheric ruins, there are castles dotted all over Ireland. Estimated at over 30,000 there are too many to visit during your tour. For this reason, we’ve compiled our 15 favourite Irish castles in this blog so you can decide which ones you want to see.

4. What language is spoken in Ireland?

English and Irish (Gaelic) are the two main languages of the Republic of Ireland. However, the Gaelic-speaking Irish are bilingual, so you won’t need a language book. You may encounter some signs in Gaelic throughout your tour, but you can check out our wee guide to learn more .

5. What currency is used in Ireland?

The Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union and uses the Euro (€, EUR) as currency. In Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, the currency is the Pound sterling (£, GBP). Find out more in our guide about Ireland’s currency and money .

6. Is Ireland a safe place?

Ireland is a very safe place to visit! It has recently been ranked amongst the 15 safest countries in the world. As in other European countries, pickpocketing and petty theft can occasionally occur in cities, but the risk of encountering crime in the rural areas is very low.

7. What is the capital of Ireland?

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. All our Ireland tours start from Dublin. If you fly into a different Irish city, get in touch so we can book you a private transfer to Dublin or customise your tour to start from a different location.

8. Do you need a visa to go to Ireland?

EU or EEA citizens, as well as those carrying passports from the UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not need visas for short-term travel in Ireland. 9. Can I choose my arrival date?

  • Walking along the impressive Cliffs of Moher .

While it is technically possible to sometimes see the northern lights from Ireland (especially in County Donegal, thanks to its northerly location and lack of light pollution), it’s not the ideal location to do so.

Why not head inside the Arctic Circle instead? You have a higher chance to spot the northern lights in Iceland or see them during an  aurora safari in northern Norway .

13. How much can I customise my tour?

When creating packages, our tour operators aim to show our visitors the very best of Ireland. But we understand everyone’s dreams are different. Add extra nights, upgrades and optional activities to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you'd like to personalise your itinerary further, be sure to ask your dedicated travel consultant.

For the best weather and longer daylight hours, we recommend visiting between April and October. At this time, attractions also have longer opening hours meaning you can make the most of your tour! Read more about the best time to visit Ireland depending on your interests .

15. What should I pack for my trip?

The Irish weather can be variable and unpredictable, even between April and October. Regardless of the weather, this is what we recommend packing for your trip to Ireland:

Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

Tailor-made Ireland vacations shaped around your passions

  • Dingle Peninsula

Renowned for its warm welcome, literary genius, live music and green fields, Ireland is a small isle with enormous character. It's compact enough to explore easily, yet also incredibly diverse. Our Ireland specialists have a deep affinity with the island — north and south — and can bring you closer to the landscapes and the Irish people even at its most famous attractions such as Giant's Causeway.

Our Ireland specialists know the country inside out and can lead you to experiences you won’t find in a guidebook. On a tailor-made vacation to Ireland with Audley, you’ll see the highlights — and much more — your way. We’ll design your ideal trip with you, paying close attention to your interests, your travel style and your budget.

Try kayaking to romantic ruins on the Lakes of Killarney , take a literary pub crawl around Dublin or gain an introduction to Northern Ireland’s political history on a black taxi tour of Belfast. We also recommend getting well off the beaten path in places like the little-visited Beara Peninsula or along the stone-walled roads of the island of Inis Mór. Wherever you go, you'll be welcomed with that legendary Irish charm, regaled with stories and persuaded that the only way to do this place justice would be to plan a return visit.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Ireland

Ireland has two official languages English and Irish. Irish is a Celtic language related to Scots Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton, and is predominantly spoken in Gaeltacht areas in the west of Ireland but you’ll see it on road signs and all official documentation.

In the Republic of Ireland, which covers roughly five-sixths of the island of Ireland, the currency is the euro (€), while In Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom, the currency is the pound sterling (GBP).

ATMs are easy to find, all major credit and debit cards are accepted, and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. Euros can be used across Europe, but Northern Ireland notes, which are different to those used elsewhere in the UK, are often unfamiliar to retailers outside Ireland and it may be best to exchange those in a bank or post office.

A standard tip in Ireland is between 10% and 15% for a restaurant meal. Check the total though — a gratuity is often added automatically. Tipping in pubs and bars is not expected. Drivers, guides, and hotel staff will appreciate a tip, but it isn’t always expected.

For the latest travel advice for Ireland, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

Food and drink is a huge part of Irish culture and in recent years the focus has been on locally sourced and seasonal produce, artisan food stuffs, and distinctive regional products.

Being an island nation, fish and seafood is plentiful. You’ll find delicate smoked salmon, creamy chowders, and fresh oysters and mussels along the coast. Although traditional dishes such as Irish stew, colcannon (mashed potato with cabbage and scallions) and boxty (fried grated potato) still appear on some menus, you’re more likely to encounter pan-European influences in most dishes.

Traditional Irish soda bread remains a local staple and you’ll find it in all shops and on most breakfast plates. Although Guinness, Ireland’s rich, full-bodied stout, is served everywhere, in Cork, order a pint of Beamish, a locally brewed rival with a more substantial bite. Whiskey distilleries are long established in Ireland, but craft beer and cider are also gaining ground.

A small island with a rich history and culture, dramatic landscapes, and a fair bit of rain, Ireland provides a wealth of experiences for the visitor. You could follow in the footsteps of literary heavyweights such as Joyce, Wilde, or Beckett on a literary pub crawl in Dublin, delve into prehistory on a guided tour of the Neolithic passage graves in Newgrange and the Boyne Valley , or discover the wonders of the Giant’s Causeway and the Antrim Coast .

Romantic castle ruins, wild national parks, and stone-walled fields litter the country, and whether you’d enjoy visiting cheesemongers and chocolatiers on a Dublin food tour , sipping peaty spirits at the Jameson Distillery , or exploring the Cliffs of Moher by boat , Ireland offers plenty of choice.

The choice of places to stay in Ireland is as varied as the landscape. You can stay in historic castles decorated in opulent traditional style, fishing lodges nestled in secluded valleys, or urban hideaways with sleek, contemporary design. The Irish are renowned for their hospitality, and whether you choose to stay in a family-run guesthouse or a plush, urban hotel, you’ll find a special welcome waiting.

In Belfast, history and grandeur combine in the Merchant Hotel . In Kilkenny, you can stay in stately Butler House, former home of the Earls of Ormonde, while on the shores of Lough Erne, you can stargaze in a dome as you fall asleep to the sound of the water. To get some ideas, browse our collection of places to stay in Ireland , and start planning your trip.

Most trips to Ireland begin in Dublin, the Republic’s capital. It’s a beguiling place where political and literary history collide, and local life never takes itself too seriously. From Dublin , you can head west to see the wild, raw beauty of Connemara , the otherworldly landscape of the Burren , or to join an impromptu traditional music session in Galway , Westport, or Doolin.

Discover Donegal’s deserted beaches or hike along the towering cliffs at Slieve League , visit the Dark Hedges that featured in the Game of Thrones , Belfast’s poignant Titanic Museum , or learn about the city’s troubled past on a black cab tour .

To the south, Cork has a character so strong its people joke about it becoming their own republic, Killarney sits at the foot of the country’s highest peaks, and Dingle is all windswept beaches and pubs that have changed little with the passage of time.

A direct flight to Dublin from New York City takes just over six and a half hours. From Boston it’s six hours, from Seattle nine hours, and from San Francisco, it’s ten hours. Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national carrier, is the only airline offering direct flights to the west coast, although some routes only operate during the summer months.

The time zone in Ireland is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed from late-March to late-October.

Self driving in Ireland is easy and efficient and is one of the best ways to get around. You’ll need to be comfortable driving on the left, however. Trains are modern and reliable, but the rail network is a little limited and if you choose to travel by train, you’re likely to need to use buses or taxis as well. We can also arrange private drivers to take you directly to your destination.

There’s no border control between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and if you’re driving, the only difference you might notice is a subtle change in the road signs and markings.

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Ireland for stays of up to 90 days.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for Ireland. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website . Ensuring you’re up to date with all vaccinations recommended at home before you travel is also a good idea.

You'll need at least one blank page in your passport, which should be valid for at least the duration of your stay, or at least six months after your travel dates if you are traveling onwards to a continental European country.

We had a better trip than we could have imagined!! The planning process with Zicasso's travel partner was so easy, and after just a few conversations, we were able to get everything booked. The hotels and activities planned for us were absolutely perfect. The app with our day-by-day itinerary and train tickets made everything so easy and stress free. I would recommend booking with our travel agency 10/10, and we will be doing so again! I really believe they connected us with local guides who were better than we would have known how to find on our own. The most kind, genuine, friendly, and knowledgeable people took us on our guided tours in the Loire Valley and Champagne region. I can't recommend their services enough!

The Zicasso tour company did a nice job planning out the trip and had a person available on WhatsApp until 7pm each day if there were any questions. They were responsive and handled things. There was a little bit of confusion with the guides about what was included and already paid for on a particular day tour, but it was cleared up when we contacted the agency. It happened a few times, so I am not sure if it was a mistake on the driver's or the agency’s part. When it comes to flights, I understand that erring on the side of caution is good, but having us get to the airport three hours early was overkill. At Inverness airport, they wouldn't even let us check in at Logan Air until two hours before the flight. When we flew out of Shannon at the end, we insisted they change the pick-up for the airport so we would get there two hours beforehand, which was plenty of time. I don't fault the company for this, but it may be good for them to consider not having their clients arrive too early at the airports unless the clients prefer that. All that being said, I would use this travel agency again and appreciated the itinerary they put together, the friendly guides for our daily excursions, and their responsiveness when we reached out to them.

The Zicasso agent was very helpful in refining the itinerary and making last-minute changes when we needed to shorten our stay in Ireland. We experienced as much of Ireland as one could in eight days and enjoyed every minute. However, driving narrow county roads and city streets in traffic could be nerve-racking.

The Zicasso travel agent listened very well to what we were looking for and matched our wants/personalities perfectly. I had very specific things I was looking for on this trip and she worked with me to figure out every request. Some activities included typical holiday travel (like tours of castles or museums), while others were not quite typical (like a one-day guided motorcycle tour with all riding gear). She found guides for us who took us where we wanted to go and matched our personalities. They were knowledgeable and laidback, and gave us time to relax (not rush) and enjoy the activities. Our trip was a full two weeks at all types of hotels (some I found on my own and some she suggested) and with multiple types of transportation and activities. Our agent and her team were very responsive and accommodating. Upon arrival, we received a folio with a full itinerary and tickets, separated by tour and travel. When I realized we had a potential issue with travel on a day at the end of the trip, they took care of it within a few hours. When I had a question on tipping our guides, I texted and received an answer in minutes. I also received an email after being asked for feedback to help them with future requests. I will use them again in a heartbeat and highly recommend them!!!

Zicasso's travel partner did an outstanding job co-ordinating and organizing our trip to Ireland. Everything went smoothly from the moment we landed. Our experience checking into hotels, taking our planned tours, getting our rental car, and getting back to Dublin for the flight home went exactly as planned. Our agent was very attentive, thorough, and responsive during the trip-planning phase and her follow-up was fantastic. Her suggestions were spot on too. All of the hotels we stayed in were lovely, the food delicious, and the service excellent. We highly recommend our operator. Our trip to Ireland was magical.

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable! Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers. Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

My sister and I had a wonderful trip! We used Zicasso's travel agent to plan it. From the beginning, all our questions were answered and they offered suggestions along the way. Everything was planned out for us, including private and small group tours. Transportation, if needed, was all arranged. Directions and maps were provided, if needed, along with any tickets for trains and tours. All our hotels were conveniently located and we were within walking distance from restaurants, shops, and metro systems. We really appreciated that. I highly recommend this travel company and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. I can’t thank them enough for planning our trip, which has provided so many lasting and priceless memories!

Our Zicasso travel partner listened to our preferences and needs, and helped design a fabulous trip for our family. Transportation was flawless throughout the trip and the local guides were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to know them personally and learning about their hometowns. I especially valued the app that provided us with every detail for each day, including emergency contacts, hotel information, and itinerary. Thank you!

What to Pack for a Trip to Ireland, According to Locals

Putting together an Ireland packing list means preparing for the unpredictable. “The old cliché of four seasons in one day in Ireland is true,” says Cathrine Burke, co-owner of the modern luxury boutique hotel Breac House in Dunfanaghy. Navigating this beautiful yet capricious weather requires a thoughtful approach. So I sought out professional packing tips from experts like Burke, and Sara Banks—founder of Dublin-based SteamLine Luggage and 20-year Ireland resident. (Her collection of vintage-inspired luggage and bags would look right at home inside Irish castles and historic boutique hotels .)

So what are Ireland packing list essentials? Given Ireland’s diverse climate, you'll want to pack practical pieces that can stand up to chilly and damp conditions. But don’t forget to think of style; look to the season for inspiration. “Clothing very much reflects the colors and textures of the landscape coupled with the need to be practical for outdoor activities and the lifestyle of a coastal community,” says Burke. And Banks reminds us to not overpack: “Bring less, because you'll want to pick up stuff when you're there.” These expert tips, coupled with staple items to round out a versatile wardrobe , will prepare you to stay comfortable in whatever season the Emerald Isle throws your way.

Ireland packing list essentials:

Waterproof outerwear.

  • A trench coat

Clothing staples

Layering pieces, comfortable walking shoes, leggings and cropped pants, travel accessories and gear.

Travel light to navigate Ireland’s cobbled streets or Dublin city transit with agility. Opt for a standard carry-on , and keep contents organized with packing cubes to minimize suitcase chaos and account for extra room for items you may purchase. Ireland is a treasure trove of excellent artisan goods, like Irish linen and wool, so consider bringing a foldable duffel bag in your carry-on to fill with extra souvenirs and check on your way home. Burke recommends Dublin boutiques: “ Stable of Ireland for apparel and the Irish Design Shop for a beautifully curated selection of Irish gifts.”

A suitcase.

When venturing out for the day, “bring a bag for a water bottle , a rain jacket, and an extra layer,” says Banks, “but leave the umbrella at home—nobody uses umbrellas.” A good day bag should be large enough to have room for a few purchases, and include zippers for keeping your wallet close to you and secure. A water-repellent exterior is an added bonus, and slings keep you hands-free. If you need to hold more, a tote bag is roomy enough to carry extra essentials you might need if you’re traveling with kids.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Cushion, Home Decor, and Purse

Ireland's weather is notoriously unpredictable. “The weather is mild and is constantly changing which means even if it's raining, it's not for very long,” Burke says. So pack a waterproof jacket or raincoat , ideally one that folds up into its own pouch so you don’t have to hold the wet item on your arm or wrap it around your waist when not in use. Banks loves the Rains brand, which combines Swedish functional design with contemporary style. “I bought one and it's changed my life because it's so cute and stylish.”

Image may contain: Fashion, Cape, Clothing, Cloak, Coat, and Poncho

Trench coat

A water-repellent trench coat never goes out of style, and will look right at home on urban travels through Dublin or Galway. “Trench coats always have a nice moment,” says Banks. The longer length protects your entire look from getting damp and can work as an evening layer for a nice dinner much better than a rain jacket. Trench coats are the ultimate shoulder-season outerwear item because of their versatility, and ideal for temperature changes between southern and Northern Ireland.

Image may contain: Clothing, Coat, Overcoat, and Trench Coat

If you’re traveling during Ireland’s peak visitation months—the spring, summer, or even into fall— “you will experience all seasons in one day,” says Banks. Start your outfit with a lightweight tee, then layer on a button-down long-sleeve. Finish with a wool cardigan if the temperature requires, then add a raincoat or trench coat. This sequence will keep you warm and dry traveling through windy coastal towns, and allow you to shed the layers when you head inside to a cozy pub.

Image may contain: Clothing, T-Shirt, Blouse, Sleeve, Accessories, Jewelry, and Necklace

If you’re going to spend time being active outdoors, you’ll want to be able to regulate your temperature with items you can easily take on or off. A vest allows for better temperature regulation than donning a sleeved sweater. Cardigans, shirt-jackets, or overshirts with a bit of extra room for movement are invaluable as a layering item. Ireland is famous for the wool Aran jumper (to Americans—Aran sweater). “Wool itself is water-repellent,” Banks says, “that's where the Aran jumper came from. They were knit for seamen by their wives.” Despite its water-resistant properties, wool can be itchy, so wearing a long-sleeve shirt or T-shirt underneath is the key to staying comfortable in wool. Burke recommends picking up locally-made wool knitwear from Donegal’s Moss & Cable .

“People love to walk [in Ireland],” says Banks. “My in-laws can easily get 20,000 steps in a day.” To live as the locals do, you'll want sturdy, waterproof shoes. Banks called out the Nike Gore-Tex trail shoes and Tretorn sneakers for their comfort, support, and durability on various terrains. For evenings out, comfortable yet stylish sneakers or flats are ideal. “You can leave the heels at home,” Banks says. Ireland has uneven terrain, from cobblestone streets to rugged hiking trails, that are often wet with rain or mud. Stick with a versatile pair of comfortable, waterproof walking shoes instead.

When it comes to navigating Ireland’s puddles, bogs, and muddy conditions, wellies are a staple . “You will see a lot of welly-ware,” says Banks. For added comfort, she recommends fur-lined, lower-cut wellies from Tretorn. “They're just the low ones that I can wear whenever it's raining out.” Especially if you're planning to pack them, look for shorter ankle-high wellies with added support.

“You know, athletic leisure is really big now in Ireland, too,” says Banks. The comfortable and functional aspect of leggings will be useful in Ireland where your day could have you on active adventures like hiking, walking, cycling, golfing, or horse riding. But even if you’re not moving a lot, leggings paired with an oversized Aran sweater and some simple sneakers make a great day outfit for urban exploring. “Jeans are super acceptable and seen everywhere,” says Banks. Go for a crop style, or cuff your jeans, so your pant hem doesn’t get soggy.

Equip your day bag with a few staples for urban and rural exploring and you’ll be ready for anything. Burke says, “I strongly recommend the McKenna Guide,” for an insider’s guide to seeing the best of Ireland. She also recommends leaving your phone in your bag and going old school, suggesting “a street map [for Dublin], it's really key to understand the different quarters that are driven by the different historical periods in the city.”

To protect your tech without worrying about the weather, a waterproof phone case or water-repellent screen protector goes a long way. Tuck in a dry pair of socks in your bag if you’re trekking outdoors all day.

Personalized audio tours are abundant, even in smaller towns and museums, which Burke suggests packing audio jack headphones for. And as much as Ireland gets a rainy reputation, “you would be surprised how many people think that rain means no sun,” she says, so pack sunscreen . You might like to throw in binoculars for wildlife spotting and a notebook for jotting down your observations, too.
