What to Do at the Airport [Step by Step Guide]

If you don’t have a lot of experience with traveling through airports, you might be wondering how to successfully navigate through the airport problem free.

In this guide I’ll give you a step by step approach you can take so that you don’t have any mishaps.

I’ll simplify everything to make it as easy to remember as possible but you also may want to bookmark this article for easy access.

Table of Contents

Pre-airport steps

While this article will focus on what to do when you arrive at the airport, I’d be remiss if I did not mention a couple of things you need to do before you show up at the airport.

Confirm flight details

Before you ever get to the airport, you should confirm your flight details to make sure your flight date and time are correct.

I hate to admit it but in my early travel days I once missed a flight because I thought I had booked it for a day later. Had I simply checked my flight 48 to 72 hours before my trip I would’ve caught the mistake.

If you are new to traveling then this should be one of the top priorities a few days before your flight!

You should be able to check in online through the airline’s website or through their app before you ever step foot in the airport. This will open up 24 hours before your flight in most cases.

Checking in is helpful because it can save you time when you arrive at the airport but it could also be helpful for other reasons . For example, did you know that it can decrease the odds of you getting bumped from your flight?

Don’t bring things that are not allowed

As you are packing for your trip, make sure that you are not bringing along prohibited items that could get you hung up going through airport security.

On UponArriving, we have written extensively about all the different types of objects allowed and not allowed on planes. So you can do a search on our blog to see if you can find anything relevant to an object you want to bring.

The TSA website is also a great resource as well but they don’t always go into a lot of detail so it’s always good to supplement your knowledge with a detailed blog post.

Have your documents with you

In order to fly around the US you’ll need to have an ID recognized by TSA. For most people, this is a driver’s license although in 2025 this will have to be a REAL ID compliant ID.

If you are flying internationally, then you will want to make sure that you also have your passport.

Okay, so those are all the steps you need to do just before your flight and now let’s focus on what to do when you arrive at the airport.

Step 1: Arrive to the airport at the right time

You want to make sure that you are arriving at the airport at the correct time. The general rule of thumb is to arrive two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

However, those time recommendations can be divided in half for some people , depending on the route, the airport, etc. If you don’t have a lot of experience with traveling then it’s best to play it conservatively.

But don’t get there too early if you have a really early flight because you might be sitting around for a while with no facilities open!

Step 2: Arrive at the right departures terminal

First, make sure you are getting dropped off or that you find parking in the correct departure section.

It may sound silly but some people get mixed up on the difference between arrivals and departures.

Because they are “arriving” at the airport they think that they need to head to arrivals but you will want to head to departures. (In the end, this doesn’t always make a huge difference because you can just take an elevator to go from one to the other but it can complicate things like parking.)

When arriving at the airport your goal is to find the terminal you are departing from and then find the section of the terminal serving your airline.

Finding the terminal you are departing from is usually easy because you can just look at your boarding pass. If you don’t have that information, you can look it up on the airline’s website or look for signs when you arrive at the airport. That’s because certain terminals will be designated to specific airlines.

Next, if you’re dealing with a terminal that serves multiple airlines you want to find the section of the terminal that is serving your specific airline. Again, just look for the signs.

If you are getting dropped off by an Uber driver or Taxi, let them know what airline you are flying on and they should take you right to that section of the terminal.

Step 3: Head to a check in/baggage counter if needed

If you already checked in on your mobile device you don’t need to go to any check-in desk unless you have bags to check.

(If you do need to check in then you can probably do that at a kiosk or you can go speak with an agent at a check-in desk.)

If you have bags to check then the first thing you want to do is to weigh your bags.

A lot of airports now set up special weigh stations so that you can make sure your baggage is underneath the weight requirements. This would typically be 40 to 50 pounds for a standard economy ticket . If your bag is over that amount then you want to re-shuffle some contents and try to put them into your carry-on bag.

Once you know that your bags are under the weight limits you will have to make your way to the baggage counter.

There will usually be two lines at these check-in/baggage areas. One line will be for non-elite members and also for economy passengers. Most likely, this will be the longest line.

There will also be a separate line for elite passengers and for people flying in business class or first class. So make sure that you join the proper line based on your ticket and elite status.

Step 4: Prepare for security

It’s always helpful to prepare for security before you step foot in the line.

That’s because you would otherwise be forced to get ready in a hurry or to remove items as you are trying to pull your luggage along.

So before you even head over to the security line consider doing the following:

  • Remove watches, belts, or anything else that could set off the metal detector
  • Place your electronics like your phone in a compartment in your bag
  • Empty out anything in your pockets and place them in your bag
  • Have your ID and boarding pass in your hand

Step 5: Head to the right security line

As soon as your bags are checked and you have your boarding pass, you are ready to go through airport security.

But you should take a few seconds to make sure that you are choosing the right security line . I constantly see people entering the wrong line and then slowing things down so don’t overlook this step!

Here are the different lines you may see:

  • Elite status line: Only for passengers with elite status or flying first/business
  • TSA Pre-Check : Expedited screening line only for Pre-Check members
  • CLEAR: Allows you to skip the line; only for registered members.

If you don’t have any special membership then you will just head to the general security line which once again will probably be the longest line.

airport visit places

Step 6: Make your way through security

When you arrive at the security line you will show your ID and boarding pass and then it will be time to go through the security checkpoint.

When going through the standard security line, you will have to remove:

  • Light jackets
  • Liquids ( 3-1-1 Rule )

When you remove these items you will place them on a tray and then make sure that you push that tray onto the conveyor belt before you walk through the full body scanner or walk-through metal detector.

(TSA agents are notorious for scolding passengers for not pushing through trays.)

Once you step in front of a scanner, a TSA agent will signal for you to walk through and then you’ll simply wait to be cleared.

If an alarm goes off or you have an item with you that needs enhanced screening, an agent may need to take a closer look. This could involve your items getting swabbed or you getting some type of pat down or both.

Step 7: Verify your gate

At this point, all of the stressful stuff is over with!

Now, you can relax as you head to your gate assuming that you are not running through the airport Home Alone style.

But this is also the perfect time to verify that your gate number has not changed.

The way to do this is to simply check one of the flight monitors found in the airport, often located near security.

You will look for your flight number and destination on that screen and verify what terminal and gate you are flying from. While this information should also be on your boarding pass, sometimes it can change which is why this is such a good time to verify.

Step 8: Find the food court or airport lounges if needed

If you have a lot of time to kill you may want to spend it at a restaurant or bar inside the airport. Or, if you have lounge access then you’ll want to find an appropriate lounge to visit.

Ideally, you will find a restaurant or lounge close to your gate. If you are lucky, you might even be right next to your gate and in that case you can really relax because you know it will only take you a couple of minutes to get to your gate when it is time to board.

I typically try to first make my way towards my gate and see if I see any stores or restaurants located along the way.

If you need to venture far from your gate then try to ask an airport agent or employee how far away your gate is. They should be able to let you know if you’re dealing with a five minute walk versus a 20 minute walk.

Step 9: Get any drinks or snacks needed for the flight

The most important thing for me on a flight is to have sufficient water. I don’t trust the water on the plane so I always make sure I have bottled water.

Ideally, I have my refillable water bottle with a filter that I can fill up at the airport with a drinking fountain machine or fill station. But if I don’t have that then we will just buy the overpriced water bottles at one of the new stand stores in the terminal.

You also want to think about snacks.

Food on the aircraft is not always the most appetizing so you might want to purchase something at one of the stores to take with you, especially on a longer flight. Good food items include sandwiches and wraps but just try not to buy anything that will have a strong odor!

Step 10: Show up to boarding on time

The boarding time for your flight should be found on your boarding pass.

The exact boarding time will depend on the size of your aircraft but generally you can expect boarding to be about 35 to 50 minutes prior to departure.

These are the absolute latest times you should arrive at the gate for boarding:

  • Domestic: 15 to 30 min before departure
  • International: 45 min+ before departure

Step 11: Make any needed boarding requests

If you think that you’ll need extra time to board or if you will need some type of assistance then you most likely qualify for pre-boarding .

This will give you an opportunity to get on the plane before all of the boarding groups are called. If you think you fall into this group simply speak with an agent at the gate and they can get you situated.

airport visit places

Step 12: Final bathroom check

While there will be a bathroom on the airplane, it helps if you relieve yourself just before the flight while still on the ground.

You can do this by hitting up the bathroom nearest to your gate just a little bit before boarding begins.

Another way to do this is to use the bathroom on the aircraft as soon as you enter the plane. That can be a little bit more tricky because you might be dealing with a lot of passenger traffic so it’s not always recommended.

Step 13: Begin boarding when your group is called

Your boarding pass will have a specific boarding group listed on it and every airline has a different system for how they board.

Most of them utilize boarding groups and the order of those groups is determined based on things like your cabin, elite status, credit card membership, etc. All you need to do is to wait for your specific group to be called in then head to the line.

For a deep dive into the boarding policy of a given airline, check out the guides below:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Frontier Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines

If you follow these 13 steps, your next airport visit should be pretty smooth as you’ll know exactly what to expect and you will avoid creating a lot of bottlenecks that inexperienced travelers often create!

Before I was an airline pilot and I heard the words “John F. Kennedy International Airport,” I imagined a place that was the gateway to the world. Merely saying these words evoked visions of glamor, travel, and excitement. Now that I fly around the world as a commercial airline pilot, I understand the important logistics of this airport for international travel.

Because international flights all leave at similar times and must go through quite the logistical dance when they arrive — customs/security checks, cleaning, maintenance reviews, catering, and swapping of flight crews — most international passengers connecting through JFK will have a layover of 3–6 hours.

That said, there are many things to do at JFK. A little pre-planning can fill hours with entertaining activities, all the while helping to recharge your mind before your next long flight. Get ready to fill your senses with great food, visual eye candy, and soothing relaxation while you stop over at the gateway to the world.

Pro Tip: Here’s a tip to avoid long delays during peak vacation season. When traveling in the summer, it’s best to book your flight early in the morning due to chronic summer thunderstorms. Thunderstorms commonly happen later in the day east of the Mississippi River. Most “first-flights” of the day have a higher arrival time percentage, making your connection more probable.

8 Fantastic Things To Do Near JFK Airport

1. tick tock, tick tock.

Although this requires you to leave the secure area, head over to the TWA Hotel , just outside of Terminal 5. This amazing, hip blast from the past is a great way to stretch your legs while you stride back into the ’60s, a bygone era.

View the "Connie" behind the glass at the lounge in TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport.

I think this is actually a destination, a mecca , for airline junkies! The hotel is steeped with historical, museum-quality displays, great music, and something new around literally every corner. It’s hard to miss the actual 1958 Lockheed Constellation “Connie” airplane located on the property. Be sure to have a snack in the actual “Connie,” served by a staff of ’60s themed flight attendants, go-go boots and all! It was named one of the best airline cocktail lounges in the world by Departures Magazine .

If you want to work out, the hotel offers a day pass to use its 10,000-square-foot gym. I prefer to head up to the year-round heated rooftop pool, grab a snack, and look down at the ramp, watching the airliners come and go. Stop by the Herman Miller reading room and sit in a real Eames leather recliner chair, or sit at the modern desks and scroll through history books. And a visit to this historic AvGeek’s dream place would not be complete without leaving with a bag full of TWA souvenirs.

Pro Tip: Take an Instagram shot and recreate the movie scene from To Catch a Thief in the iconic tunnel of the hotel, which joins up with Terminal 5.

2. Getting Around

Jump on the free monorail, also known as the “air-train ,” that connects all six terminals. It operates every 2–5 minutes.

Delta Airlines and its affiliates operate the JFK Jitney shuttle bus between Terminals 2 and 4. Once on the bus, you shouldn’t have to re-clear security on arrival. Always double check with an agent to make sure you have enough time to catch your flight.

Times Square in New York City.

3. To Leave Or Not To Leave

For the more adventurous who might have a longer layover, consider leaving the airport and heading to one of the greatest cities in the world, New York City . It’s as easy as renting a car or jumping on a bus or train.

There are a few ways to get to the city. If time is a concern, take an Uber or cab. Depending on the time of the day, it will run about $65. Taking the train or bus is slower and costs less: about $12. Plan for at least an hour into the city. If I were going to zip to the city, I would head to Times Square, also known as midtown, on the island of Manhattan.

JetBlue Loyalty Program Perk even takes its members from Manhattan to the airport in minutes and vice versa. Forty-second and Broadway is a great spot to get dropped off, walk around, eat some food, and see all the dazzling electronic lights of this iconic place. Times Square is in the Theater District, so it’s hopping at all times of day!

On a really long layover at JFK airport, you can visit Central Park, Queens Botanical Garden, the Empire State Building, or Even Ellis Island.

Pro Tip: If you are planning on leaving a secure area, be sure to get a boarding pass at the Customer Booking Center for your next flight, saving time and bypassing gate check-in. Proceed directly to security en route to your gate. Check with your airline to see if you can drop your luggage at their lost luggage area for an hourly fee. (Most luggage lockers were removed from airports after 9/11 for security reasons.) Consider getting a Clear pass, free for two months, for a faster security check-in.

4. Let’s Grab Some Grub

The six terminals within JFK Airport offer different, and equally scrumptious, food options. From Turkish peynirli toast to Irish pub grub or a wine bar, there is something for everyone. All throughout the airport, you will see white, lit cubes. Located on the cubes is a QR code to scan, giving you access to food and shops in your vicinity. For those who wish to have some libations, there are a few nice wine shops and upscale restaurants to sip cocktails or wine.

5. Spa-La-La

If getting pampered sounds like a dreamy way to spend your layover, you have come to the right airport. Consider a hot stone massage, pedicure, or full body massage. Be Relax spa, located in Terminal 5, is open 7 days a week to pamper your tired body. Consider trying their special oxygen or aromatherapy treatment with your service to enhance your wellbeing. I recommend you try the “anti-jet-lag” facial treatment.

6. Hit The Lounge

There are 23 airline lounges, of which seven offer single-entry passes for purchase. These passes are for people who don’t have access to the lounge through their credit card or aren’t booked in business or first class.

Aer Lingus, Air France, Alaska, American, Prime Class Lounge, and Wing Tips Lounge offer single-use day passes. Depending on your airline, some might have codeshare agreements with these lounges. Plan ahead and check to see if there is a discount to book your single-entry pass online versus paying at the door.

These lounges are wonderful places to recharge, relax, and fuel up with complimentary food and drink. They are places to rest, recharge your electronics, or work in designated areas. JFK Airport is the sixth-busiest airport in the country — it services 61 million passengers annually — and utilizing these plush lounges can really benefit your mind and mood!

There is also a USO Lounge for military members and their families located in Terminal 5.

Shopping options at JFK International Airport.

7. Shop Till You Drop

Every terminal offers a variety of shopping options for the world traveler. Terminal 1 offers high-end stores such as Coach and Juicy Couture. Head over to Terminal 2 if you need tech items you might have forgotten at home. (Consider purchasing noise-canceling headphones which can drown out a crying child in the row behind you!)

Step over to Terminal 4 and stroll through Duty-Free to get a great price on fancy colognes or makeup.

Over in Terminal 5, check out The New York Times Store and catch up on the latest top-selling books.

You can also experience the luxury of the newly renovated Terminal 8 and indulge in some airport shopping before you fly with a wide range of shops. Terminal 8 offers a unique shopping experience over nearly 60,000 square feet with authentic local eateries and a variety of Fifth Avenue retailers.

8. Drop And Give Me 10

If you are like me and constantly want to work out, consider finding a quiet, small area off to the side and squeezing in a workout. There are many free exercise videos online to use to stay focused, burn off some stress, and keep your heart healthy. Consider speed walking through the air-conditioned terminals. Make a goal to walk 10,000 steps and reward yourself with a healthy drink from the Shake Shack .

If you want to be active and have fun, JFK even has a curling rink that you can try out.

Coming Soon: Slumber Away

Terminal 4 will soon become host to Minute Suites , a new respite with clean, private suites for weary travelers. Lucky JFK travelers will get to experience the seven new suites with a bathroom and shower. These suites are extremely sanitary and are available for hourly rentals or overnight. Clean linen and pillows are provided for napping. Netflix and DirecTV are available, or you can pipe your own tunes through their TV.

Can I Connect with Nature at JFK?

Yes, you can, but the options are scarce. There are not many things to do at JFK Airport to keep in touch with nature, but there is still something you can do while waiting for your flight. If you’re flying out of Terminal 5, check out JetBlue’s T5 Rooftop Garden, with a variety of plants and flowers.

What Is the Most Budget-Friendly Activity to Pass the Time at JFK?

Watch Planes Take-Off and Land: JFK Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, and watching planes take off and land can be an exciting experience. JFK Airport has several dedicated viewing areas where you can watch the taking-offs and landings. The rooftop parking lot of Terminal 5 has unobstructed views of the airport runways.

Where to Entertain the Kids at JFK?

With the variety of climbing structures, slides, and interactive games, The T5 Kids Play Area in Terminal 5 is the ideal place where children can blow off some steam before or after a flight. JFK Airport also has a range of kid-focused dining options to satisfy your little ones’ appetites. Also, stroller movement throughout the airport is smooth with wide corridors, spacious elevators, and accessible ramps You will even find designated stroller parking areas.

Can I Worship at the JFK?

Yes. There’s an Interfaith Alley in JFK Airport at Terminal 4. Getting in touch with your spiritual side can be a great way to get away from the chaos of the airport. At JFK Airport there are four places where you can worship that sit side by side – a Jewish synagogue, a Protestant chapel, a Roman Catholic church, and an Islamic center. Whatever your denomination or nationality, you can find tranquility here during your layover at JFK Airport.

What is the Best Hotel For Business Travelers Near JFK?

The Crowne Plaza JFK Airport New York City is the best accommodation for business travelers. At a price of around 200$ for a standard room, you get a huge business center, amenities like free Wi-Fi and parking services, a fitness area, and an American cuisine restaurant that will make your stay enjoyable. The hotel also provides its guests with free shuttle rides to and from the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Best U.S. Cities to Turn a Layover Into an Action-packed Day Trip

airport visit places

Layovers can be a great way to explore a destination before hopping on a connecting flight, but squeezing in the time to get to and from the airport and explore a city in just a few hours can be tricky.

Some cities offer airports that are closer to their downtown and attractions, giving travelers the chance to take the time that would be spent waiting for a flight at the gate and use it to grab a local bite or tick an activity off their list.

To determine which cities make it easy to have an active layover, online travel service company CheapTickets took a look at the nation’s airports to determine the top five locations for a "playover" — what the company defines as a layover in a city where the airport is close enough to the center to allow for a day trip without missing a connecting flight.

CheapTickets started by examining the U.S. airports that were most visited through bookings made on its website within the last year, narrowing down the list to include airports based in major regions throughout the U.S that offer a public transportation time of 50 minutes or less to the city center and to notable attractions.

Each city was then ranked based on the following factors: the travel time from the airport to the city’s downtown, the cost of a round-trip ticket on public transit to the city’s downtown or to a nearby area of interest, the available public transportation options, and attractions travelers can see within four to eight hours (including travel time to and from the airport).

Boston came out on top, with Logan International Airport offering travelers several public transportation options. See which cities ranked in the top five below.

1. Boston: Boston Logan International Airport

Public transportation options from Boston Logan International Airport include water taxis , which travelers can get to by taking the free #66 shuttle from the airport’s terminals.

Travelers can also take the Silver Line (SL1) bus to get from the airport to Boston’s Seaport District , which is noted for its harbor promenade, landscaped parks, and variety of shops and restaurants. The ride takes about 19 minutes and is free from the airport to the Seaport District. Rides back to the airport cost $2.50.

At the seaport, visitors can see the Boston Fish Pier , stroll through the Rose Kennedy Greenway to explore its gardens and plazas, or admire a variety of art at the Institute of Contemporary Art .

Visitors can also take both the Silver Line and the Blue Line to get to downtown Boston in around 30 minutes.

In downtown, history abounds at locations like the Old State House and the Paul Revere House . Seafood fanatics can head to Neptune Oyster , where diners line up to taste the famed oysters, buttered lobster rolls, and raw seafood selections.

For dessert head to Mike’s Pastry to sample Italian treats such as cannoli and gelato in a pastry shop that has been open since 1946.

2. Atlanta: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

From the airport, visitors can take the MARTA train to get to downtown Atlanta in roughly 16 to 20 minutes for $2.50 each way.

Once downtown, travelers can enjoy activities like a visit to Centennial Olympic Park to take in the free daily shows of the Fountain of Rings — the world’s largest interactive fountain featuring the symbol of the Olympic Ring.

Downtown Atlanta is also home to the Georgia Aquarium , which features thousands of animals and a variety of exhibits. Meanwhile, Coca Cola lovers can visit a museum dedicated to the history of the company at The World of Coca-Cola . The 20-acre complex is home to over 100 types of beverages visitors can sample, in addition to 200-year-old artifacts and historic accounts.

When it's time to eat, make sure to stop into the Busy Bee soul food restaurant, which has been open since 1947 and serves dishes that range from fried cube steak to old fashioned banana pudding.

3. Chicago: Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport

After landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport , travelers can take the CTA Blue Line to reach downtown Chicago in roughly 45 minutes for $5. The Orange Line will connect travelers from the Midway International Airport to downtown Chicago in about 30 minutes for $2.50 each way.

In downtown, visitors can check out popular attractions like the famed Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (known as “The Bean”), Lurie Garden , the Maggie Daly park , and the Chicago Riverwalk to enjoy scenic strolls filled with river views.

The all-local Revival Food Hall is also within close distance and hosts Mindy’s Hot Chocolate , where hot chocolate add-ons include butterscotch and cognac shots, maple syrup, and homemade marshmallows.

4. Philadelphia: Philadelphia International Airport

The SEPTA train stops at every major terminal at Philadelphia International Airport, easily transporting passengers to Center City in roughly 25 minutes.

The Airport Line service runs seven days a week between 5 a.m. and midnight, and costs $6.75 when purchased in advance and $8 one-way for regular purchases on weekdays. On weekday evenings and weekends, rides cost $5.25 one-way when purchased in advance and $7 one-way for regular purchases.

Once at Center City , visitors can explore more than half a dozen neighborhoods that make up Philadelphia’s downtown. Here is where you’ll find historic neighborhoods like Old City and Society Hill , and a variety of shops, restaurants, and parks.

Various corridors throughout the area have their own charm to offer, from the Midtown Village and its independently owned restaurants, hotels, and boutiques to Rittenhouse Row and its upscale selection of galleries and spas.

5. Las Vegas: McCarran International Airport

There are several options provided by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada for riders headed from McCarran International Airport to Las Vegas’s famous strip and to downtown.

Passengers who arrive at Terminal 1 can use Routes 108 (Paradise), 109 (Maryland Parkway), and the Westcliff Airport Express (WAX) from the Ground Level Zero. From Terminal 3, options include the WAX or the Centennial Express from the Departures Level.

Each ride costs $2 per person, or $5 for a 24-hour pass, with rides taking roughly 15 minutes to arrive at the Las Vegas Strip and 40 minutes to get downtown. The Strip is home to a variety of Las Vegas’s popular casinos and resorts and attractions that include the Bellagio fountain show and the world’s tallest observation wheel .

Try Bavette’s Steakhouse and Bar for a selection of meats, seafood towers, and classic cocktails, or head to the Cosmopolitan’s The Chandelier bar to drink under millions of shimmering crystals.

Airport Tips You Need to Know for Your Next Trip

This post is all about the best airport tips. Traveling is fun, but getting through the airport can be an exhausting and hectic experience sometimes.

Since I worked for a big firm, I spent a LOT of time in airports traveling for my job. In fact, there have been a few months where I was flying for work every single week!

With all the time I’ve spent at airports, I’ve picked up quite a few helpful tips along the way.

So here are 15 awesome airport tips to help make your travel experience better!

Travel Hacks for the Airport

1. Bring your own snacks.

Avoid paying super-steep airport prices for snacks by bringing your own with you! Some of my favorite snacks to bring with me for flights are popcorn, fruit leather, energy bars, and trail mix.

🥜 See more airplane snack ideas for long flights .

2. Pack an empty water bottle.

I always bring an empty water bottle with me in my carry-on luggage so I can fill it up once I get through security.

Most airports have water bottle refill stations or at least a water fountain you can use. This will help you save money instead of buying an overpriced water bottle at the airport.

This refillable water bottle is perfect for travel because it comes with a filtering straw that makes water from anywhere safe to drink!

3. Check in for your flight in advance.

Be sure to check in for your flight online 24 hours in advance so you don’t have to wait in line once you get to the airport. This can also be a great way to grab a good seat assignment if you weren’t able to select your seat when you booked your ticket.

Another incentive to check in for your flight before you arrive at the airport: Some budget airlines are now charging extra if you wait to check in with an agent!

4. Wear socks

Some airports make you take your shoes off when going through security, especially in the US. To avoid standing barefoot on the dirty airport floor, make sure to wear socks! They will also come in handy for keeping your feet warm on your flight.

5. Dress in layers for your flight

On a similar note to above, dress in layers to stay comfortable while at the airport and on your flight. Airports and airplanes can either be extremely cold or extremely hot and usually there’s no happy in-between so wearing layers will help.

6. Bring a portable charger

Not all airports have convenient outlets or charging stations while you’re waiting at the gate, so be sure to bring a portable charger with you! I take this portable phone charger everywhere I go and it has been a lifesaver when I’m traveling.

7. Pack your laptop in an easy to reach place

You will have to take your laptop or any other large electronics out of your bag when going through security. To avoid having to dig through your bag while waiting in line, make sure to pack your laptop or any other electronics in a side pocket of your luggage with easy access.

For frequent business travelers, you may also want to get a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment . This makes it a breeze to reach for your laptop at the airport!

8. Take a photo of your parking space

If you’ll be parking at the airport, make sure to take a picture of your parking space and any helpful signage or numbering that will help you find it again when you return.

There’s nothing worse than returning from a vacation only to be unable to remember where you parked your car, leading you to wander around the airport parking garage for an hour!

9. Take a photo of your checked luggage

On the off chance that your checked luggage gets lost, having a photo of it in addition to your luggage receipt can make it much easier to locate.

10. Pack hand sanitizer

Airports and airplanes are a mecca for germs, so pack a travel-sized hand sanitizer wherever you go. I like  this hand sanitizer because you can easily clip it to your backpack or purse.

11. Research sleep spots

If you’ll need to spend the night in an airport because your flight was delayed or you have a long layover, check out this website for the best and worst sleeping spots in most airports around the world.

Sleeping in the airport is never fun, but you can make it a little more comfortable if you plan in advance and know the best places to go.

12. Keep and pack hotel toiletries in carry-on

Every time you stay at a hotel, bring extra travel-sized toiletries home with you. Then any time you travel with only carry-on luggage, you’ll have a collection of TSA-approved toiletries to pack.

(And bonus, you won’t need to buy your own shampoo/conditioner as often!)

13. Put a colorful ribbon on your luggage

If you’re checking luggage, tie a colorful ribbon on the handle of your suitcase to make it stand out so you can find it quickly in the sea of similar luggage on the conveyor belt.

14. Go left at security

Studies have shown that people naturally veer right, so when you reach a security checkpoint, head to the line furthest to the left and you just might save a few minutes waiting in line.

15. Have a designated airplane outfit

Choose a comfortable outfit and make it your designated outfit for air travel. (I always wear leggings, a loose, lightweight hooded sweatshirt, and a coat if I’m going somewhere cold.)

If you have a designated outfit, you won’t be scrambling for something to wear on the day of your flight and you’ll always be comfortable at the airport and on the plane.

16. Invest in Global Entry

Having Global Entry has improved my airport experience a million times over.

If you are a frequent flyer (or even fly just 3-4 times per year) then Global Entry is worth the cost. Global Entry includes TSA Precheck, which allows you to skip the general security line and go through the faster TSA Precheck line (where you don’t have to take off your shoes or take your electronics out of your suitcase.)

When traveling internationally, you can also go through to an expedited customs line upon returning to the US. Global Entry costs $100 and is good for five years. If you just want TSA Precheck, you can get that for $85 and it’s good for five years.

My company paid for my Global Entry, but I would absolutely spend my own money on it. Some travel credit cards will also cover your Global Entry fee.

If you don’t fly often or you're a first-time flyer, going to the airport can already feel like you’re entering a new universe of moving walkways, long hallways and gates to other cities. Some airports even have their own mini train or tram system to help customers get between terminals, so you might have to figure out which line to take and which direction.

It may look and sound overwhelming, but learning what to do at the airport can be easy.

The good news is that most airports have a similar basic design, and the steps that you need to follow are essentially the same, no matter which airport is closest to your home. You won’t even need a map to master the airport process. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you learn how to navigate the airport as we move headlong into busy travel seasons.

How to find your way around an airport

1. arrive in the right spot — and at the right time.

Follow the signs at your respective airport to make sure you find the correct terminal building for your flight. For instance, at Denver International Airport, Terminal East hosts airlines like Alaska, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and Spirit, whereas Terminal West hosts American, JetBlue, United, WestJet and others. Enter the airport at your terminal to simplify the next steps of the process.

Research the correct terminal in advance of your departure. This will help you feel less overwhelmed by any of the directional signage lining your route to the airport itself.

Most airlines recommend that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure for domestic flights and three hours for international flights. You’ll hear all sorts of advice about whether you need to be there that early, but it’s a good general rule.

There are several reasons why you might need extra time:

Are you checking a bag? If so, you might have to spend more time checking in and getting someone to weigh your bag, instead of going straight to the security checkpoint with your boarding pass. Check-in line wait times can vary greatly, so you'll want to build in some time for this if checking a bag.

Are you parking at the airport? If so, give yourself an extra 20 minutes on top of what time you already planned to be there. Sometimes, airport parking lot shuttles can take a long time to make their rounds or get filled to capacity with families and their luggage. If you budget extra time, waiting for the next shuttle won’t derail your travel plans.

Do you have TSA Precheck or Global Entry ? These security pre-clearances can make it faster to get through security at the airport. If you don’t have one of these, keep in mind that you might have to wait in line longer, and budget ahead of time to accommodate the potentially long queues.

2. Check in

Once you enter the airport, the first thing you should do is check in (if you haven’t done so already online).

Many airlines allow you to check in online 24 hours before your flight. If you’re not checking a bag, this is a great option because it allows you to download a mobile boarding pass to your phone to bypass check-in and head for security (Step 3).

If you’d like a paper boarding pass or if you’re checking a bag, you’ll have to officially check in. Some airlines will offer self check-in kiosks, where you’ll enter some information about your flight reservation to print boarding passes, check bags and select seats. From there, you’ll need to find your way to the luggage drop line to get your checked bag weighed.

For airports without self check-in machines, the airline’s customer service agents at the check-in counter will handle the entire process.

3. Go through the security checkpoint

Once you’ve checked your luggage and gotten your boarding pass, you should go to the TSA checkpoint leading to the proper concourse for your flight. Concourses are usually marked by letter (e.g., Concourse A, B, C) and align with your gate designation (so Gate B12 would be in Concourse B).

Sometimes, the signage will say things like “To All Gates” to help lead you away from the check-in area. There may also be separate security checkpoints for different gates, so if there are directions based on your gate number, default to those instructions.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by where to go, generally follow the crowd of people who just checked in.

Once you see the area with different lines, TSA personnel in blue shirts, stacks of bins, X-ray machines and metal detectors, you’ve made it to the right place. Get in the proper line based on whether you have TSA Precheck (it will be noted on your boarding pass) or not.

Understand what items you can and cannot bring through airport security. Many prohibited items should be fairly obvious; you can't bring weapons, flammables or other sharp objects in your carry-on. But there are some surprising items you cannot bring through airport security, too. A common one that gets people is that liquids are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces. You can't bring through beverages, but it also means you can't bring through foods like peanut butter jars or yogurt containers.

» Learn more: TSA carry-on restrictions you need to know

It also means that — unless they're in a small package — you can't bring through many toothpastes, lotions and shampoos. If you must travel with your own toiletries, consider packing products like the shampoo and conditioner bars that become activated with water. They aren't actually a liquid — so you can still take them in your carry-on through security.

» Learn more: Can you bring food through TSA?

The general security checkpoint process usually goes something like this:

A TSA agent will check your boarding pass and ID. Have both items out before you walk up to their podium to save time. Then, stow these items safely before you go through the security checkpoint — as you don't want them to fall through the cracks or get forgotten.

Walk up to the baggage screening line and when it’s your turn, grab however many plastic bins you think are necessary. A good rule of thumb is one for your clothing and liquids, one for electronics and one for your personal item, if needed.

Place your bins on the belt. Take off your shoes and jacket and empty your pockets; put these items in one of your bins. Take your toiletries out of your carry-on and put them in a bin (hopefully any liquids are TSA-compliant). Note that you can stack these on top of other items if needed.

Take out your laptop, iPad and other large electronic devices and put them in the second bin. These cannot be stacked with other items.

Add your carry-on luggage or personal item to the belt, if applicable.

Push your bins and your carry-on luggage through the scanner and then join the line to go through the X-ray machine.

Once you’re out of the machine, grab all of your bins and luggage. To avoid crowding and holding up the line, take your luggage and bins to the sitting area away from the scanner so you can take your time putting your bags back together. Make sure you didn’t forget anything — especially that boarding pass and ID you were supposed to put away or your laptop that had to be in its own bin.

Depending on the airline you fly with as well as how long you’re traveling for, you might wonder whether you’re better off traveling with a checked bag rather than a carry-on . This can be especially relevant if you’ve got some liquids with you that exceed the TSA carry-on liquid limits.

4. Find your gate

Once you’ve been cleared through security, follow the signs to your gate. It should be listed on your boarding pass, but the most up-to-date information can be found on departure monitors throughout the airport.

Once you confirm the gate for your flight, look for signs that direct travelers toward different parts of the airport. You might have to take a quick tram to another terminal, but this should be clearly marked for travelers. In general, you will want to follow signs with numbers and arrows — somewhat like when you head to a hotel room.

If you have any questions, try to find an information kiosk or a fellow traveler to help point you in the right direction.

5. Wait at the gate

Now, depending on how much time you have before the boarding time listed on your boarding pass (usually 30 minutes to an hour before your departure time), you may have some time to kill.

You’ll usually want to stay nearby so you can quickly get back to the gate if you need to. Make sure you can hear any pertinent updates about your specific flight, such as delays.

This is the time you can use to grab food or shop at the establishments inside the concourse. It’s notoriously expensive to eat at the airport, but it’s even more expensive to purchase food onboard. Plus, your options will be much more limited, so it’s a good idea to grab a bite before you get on the plane if you’ll need a snack later on.

Some travelers also use this time to go to the bathroom or refill their water bottle. Unless you decide to buy Wi-Fi onboard, your time at your gate might be your last chance to charge your electronics and download movies, music or podcasts before the flight. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with whatever your airline is offering for in-flight entertainment .

An airline lounge might be a good place to stop if you have a lot of time before your flight. If you’re flying first or business class or your credit card comes with lounge access , you might be able to wait for boarding time from the comfort of a lounge, which usually offers more spacious seating and unlimited food while you’re there.

UNLOCK AIRPORT LOUNGES WITH THE RIGHT CARD

Major U.S. airlines operate airport lounges for high-priority customers, as do some credit card issuers, most notably American Express. A number of airports also have independently operated lounges that are accessible through networks like Priority Pass. Several credit cards provide airport lounge access, although no single card gets you into every lounge. Among cards with lounge access:

The Platinum Card® from American Express

on American Express' website

Citibank Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® Credit Card

on Citibank's application

Chase United MileagePlus(R) Club Card Credit Card

Access to more than 1,300 lounges worldwide, including:

• The issuer's own Centurion Lounges and International American Express lounges.

• Delta Sky Clubs , when flying Delta.

• Priority Pass Select lounges (enrollment required).

• Lounges in the Plaza Premium , Escape and Airspace networks.

Complimentary Admirals Club membership, plus access to partner lounges with which American Airlines has a reciprocal agreement.

Access to United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide.

For occasional United travelers, a different card, the United℠ Explorer Card , gives you two one-time passes to the United Club each year. That card has an annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then $95 . Read our review of that card .

• Access to Delta Sky Club when traveling with Delta, plus two one-time passes each year for guests. (Note that limits on lounge visits are scheduled to take effect in 2025. Read more about that here .)

• Access to American Express Centurion Lounges when flying Delta.

• Priority Pass Select membership, with access to over 1,000 airport lounges internationally and meal credits at select airport restaurants and bars.

• Access to Chase's own Sapphire Lounges , though there are currently only a couple of locations.

To view rates and fees of The Platinum Card® from American Express , see this page . To view rates and fees of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card , see this page .

6. Board the airplane

The last step is to get on board. Wait for your boarding group to be called, which should be listed on your ticket. Most airlines board by a numbered boarding group, and people with elite status and those flying first class usually board in the earlier groups.

You won’t be able to board with an earlier group than the one listed on your ticket unless you need special accommodations, like if you’re flying with small children. In those cases, they’ll usually announce when they’ll allow people who need extra help or time to board. If you miss your boarding group, you will still be able to board with later groups.

If you’re flying on Southwest, be aware that it has a unique boarding system where people must line up near the poles in the boarding area by numerical order when their alphabetical group is called. Learn more about boarding groups on Southwest here .

Once you hear your group, get in the correct boarding lane. Usually there’s a general boarding lane and another lane for people in priority boarding groups or those with elite status. The gate agent will scan your boarding pass and you can proceed down the jet bridge.

Normally, you won’t have to show your boarding pass again on the plane, but make sure you know your seat number before you put it away and keep it accessible in case needed. Then find your seat and stow your luggage as quickly as you can, so the plane can take off on time.

7. Retrieve your luggage

Once your plane arrives at your destination, you’ll want to follow the signs to baggage claim to pick up your checked bags. Each flight is assigned a luggage carousel, so check the monitors near baggage claim to find out which one your bag will arrive on. The time you spend waiting for your luggage to arrive can vary, sometimes up to 30 minutes or more. This is usually a good time to go to the bathroom or grab a snack.

Alaska Airlines has a 20-minute baggage guarantee, so if your bags take more than 20 minutes to show up on the baggage carousel, you can report it to the Alaska baggage office and get a $25 discount code or 2,500 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan bonus miles for use on a future Alaska Airlines flight.

If you don’t see your bags after all the luggage from the flight has been unloaded, find the airline’s baggage office at the airport to report your missing items. They should be able to help you find them. If your luggage is missing, document your loss and collect the necessary paperwork such that you can file a claim with your travel insurance provider or credit card issuer (assuming it includes insurance coverage ).

8. Exit the airport and enjoy your trip

This can be the trickiest part. Each airport has different rules about where to pick up rideshare services. You might need to figure out which level of the airport is designated for ground transportation — meaning buses, shuttles and cars to catch a ride out of the airport. Sometimes, you might be able to take the metro right from the airport to the heart of the city. Follow the signs and ask for help. Your trip is just getting started.

  • Moscow Airports: A Virtual Guide (Written by a Real-life Guide)

When you arrive in Moscow (which is what you should definitely do at least once in your life, if you’re calling yourself a traveler, no offence) by an airplane, you will most likely find yourself in one of the three major airports: Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, or Vnukovo. They all provide services of the highest quality and are on par with many major airports in Europe and United States. Moscow has always been in the top 3 of the most popular European cities in terms of traveling (whether Moscow was the final destination or just a transitional point), so maintaining the most efficient system of handling millions of people each year is now a good old tradition.

This basically means that there is no real need to pay too much attention to which Moscow airport your airplane will bring you to: you won’t be disappointed in any case. The only possible reason I can think of for you to actually be concerned about this, is if you, for example, have a business appointment somewhere in the center of Moscow, but you do not want to leave your own city for as long as you can (for whatever reason), so you want to arrive, say, half an hour before the meeting, but do not want to be late. In that case yes, it is crucial to you know where the airport is, because it defines how fast you can get to the city.

So let me give you a more detailed review of all three airports of Moscow (maybe some particular aspect of one of them will especially charm you). Since we have touched the subject of timing, let’s start with the one that is the closest to the city, and that’ll be Vnukovo.

Vnukovo:  High In The Sky

New Passenger Terminal A of Vnukovo Airport

Another fact that differentiates Vnukovo and puts it above other Moscow airports is that it is literally located higher: 205 meters above the sea level, which is good, because it means that the planes can take off even when the weather is foggy (fog covers the low grounds, and Vnukovo is basically already in the sky).

Continuing the subject of saving your time when getting to Moscow, Vnukovo has one more advantage for people who come from Europe and, for that matter, for anyone who’s flying from the western world: Vnukovo is built on (you guessed it) the west side of the city, so it helps to save another 10 to 20 minutes.

That will probably be it, I mean reviewing Vnukovo: you don’t really care exactly how many planes or people can be managed there (a lot), or about the airport’s history (nothing special), or how long the landing lines are (they’re pretty long), right? I thought so. So with that, let’s get to the next big thing in this top 3. Let me introduce you, lads and lasses, to another famous airport: Sheremetyevo.

Sheremetyevo:  Looking Ahead Is The Key

New Sheremetyevo’s Terminal D operated by Aeroflot

There are two lines for the planes to take off from (and, naturally, to land on), but they are quite near one another (280 m), so they do not work independently from each other. That, technically, could have been different, because it’s just official rules that do not allow the airport to use them in such a way. Say, in San Francisco there is an airport in which the distance between the lines is 230 meters, and the planes seem to do pretty well, without too much crushing into each other (actually, without any crushing at all). There is a plan to build a third line, for that matter, which should increase the airport’s activity by 60%.

Moscow airport Sheremetyevo is hosting the biggest company of all Russian airlines , “Aeroflot  - Russian Airlines,” and the three major international airline alliances, “Sky Team,” “Star Alliance,” and “Oneworld,” also have chosen Sheremetyevo as a go-to (or, technically, a fly-to) airport when there’s a need for to arrange a landing in Moscow.

I should stop myself again (otherwise this article will drag on forever), and give you a picture of the last (but, as usual, not the least, just the most distant from the city) airport: Domodedovo.

Domodevodo: Another Biggest One

Modern Passenger Terminal of Domodedovo Airport

If you’d walk 22 km from MKAD (or 45 km from the city center) south-east from Moscow, that’s where you’d find Domodedovo. It would be pretty hard to miss. It’s the most technologically advanced one, and it gets better and bigger every year. According to an independent British agency “Skytrax,” Domodedovo is the best airport in Eastern Europe, and the British know airports, so that’s a valuable opinion.

If you’re not yet tired of how everything in this article is the best and the biggest, here’s another rather entertaining bit of information. Remember how I said that Sheremetyevo can handle all kinds of aircrafts, but there’s an exception? Well, here’s why: Domodedovo is the only airport in Russia that can provide landing to the biggest passenger plane in the world, Airbus380 (and that thing is indescribably huge, so that’s saying something).

Well, that’s it, I gave you a brief description of all three major airports in Moscow, mostly for educational and entertainment reasons, so I tried to avoid technical or overly mundane information, but if there was something in this article that you’ve found being practical, that’s great. Finally, click the link if you wish to read another piece of important information on how to meet each other in arrivals area at one of Moscow's airports.

12 Best Places to Fly: Airports and Destinations for Pilots

Once you have passed your final exam and got your Private Pilot’s License or PPL, you will probably start thinking of how you can use it. You are likely to want to fly to other airports or even other destinations where you don’t need an airport in order to land. But this can be quite complicated. So let’s take a look at all that is involved in doing this.

Reasons For Flying to Other Airports and Destinations

Gaining experience.

At first, soon after getting your PPL, you may want to simply gain more experience by flying to new destinations. This is a good idea.

Every airport is different, with a different layout of its runways and approaches and with other regulations which you may not be used to. Some airports might be by the ocean or in the mountains, necessitating procedures and specialized knowledge which may be new to you. So it could be a good idea to simply spend some time flying to different destinations in order to learn, rather than considering anything else.

Pleasure Trips and Day Trips

Airport

After doing the above for a while, you will most likely feel ready to ‘spread your wings a bit,’ as it were. But, at least in the beginning, you may want to fly to somewhere which isn’t too far away. So you need to have a look at your sectional aviation chart – known colloquially as a ‘sectional’ – and see where you might go.

In most areas, there will be airports within an hour or so of your home airfield, and it would probably be a good idea to start with these. Don’t be too ambitious until you have more experience. It is perhaps not such a good idea to try to fly from coast to coast across the US as a very new pilot! A short flight, followed by a drink or a meal, and then a flight back – perhaps by a different route – will probably be enough for now.

As you gain more experience, you might want to go further afield. You may turn a pleasure flight into a full-day trip to a place of interest, spending a few hours at your destination.

You might, by this time, want to take family and friends with you. This is a bit different from short trips, as you will need to check things like the weather at your destination for a longer period. And of course, if you are hiring an aircraft , you will need to ensure that you are allowed to have it for all the time you need.

Going to Fly-ins and Other Events

Another fun way to spend a day flying is to visit a fly-in or other organized aviation event. In most places, there are a number of these, usually during the summer.

Some are likely to be quite small local events, good for the less experienced, while others are very large and well known, such as those organized by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and huge events such as the ‘Sun ‘n Fun’ flying festival.

Flying Holidays and Longer Trips

Waiting on Airport

As you get more used to flying, you will probably want to do more than just go somewhere for a day. At this point, you might start to think about longer trips, perhaps holidays by plane, either in one place or involving touring.

You can do this in your own country, of course, but you might even want to go overseas, depending on where you live. I’m based in the UK, and I have flown aircraft to France several times and also to other destinations in Europe. It was great fun, and I also learned a great deal from doing it.

There is a lot more to think about when you start to make trips like this. Obviously, if you are hiring a plane from a flying school, they will have to be willing to let you have it for more than a day, perhaps for several days. I have done this, borrowing an aircraft from a flying school for Monday to Friday, taking it back so that they have it for both weekends when they were particularly busy. So it’s not impossible, but it will depend on the individual flying school.

At this stage, many people start to think about the possibility of owning their own plane or having a share in a group-owned aircraft . Doing this means it is a lot easier to make long-term plans.

Business Trips

Finally, it is perfectly possible to fly yourself for business trips, with only a PPL. Whether or not you can do this will, of course, depend on the type of work you do. You will also almost definitely need your own plane for these sorts of trips. But it is worth bearing in mind that these things are possible, in the future if not right now.

Is The Destination Suitable: Being Aware of Difficulties

Before you start thinking of visiting other airports, you need to decide if your proposed destination is suitable for both you and your aircraft . Here are some of the points you need to consider.

All Airports Are Not the Same

As has been briefly touched on above, all airports are different. For example, some are in controlled airspace, and others have no airspace limitations.

Some allow all types of traffic; others may prohibit helicopters, for instance. In some cases, you need to notify the airport in advance that you plan to visit; in other instances, this will not be necessary.

Then you have to consider the airport’s location: is it at altitude, close to the sea, surrounded by obstacles? All of these factors might make a difference as to whether your plan to visit is practical.

Being Aware of Your Limitations

Moving on from my last point, you always need to be aware of your own abilities and limitations. A PPL is often said to be a license to learn’, and a newly qualified PPL may struggle to land at an airport surrounded by obstacles with unpredictable coastal winds, for example.

Before going anywhere, you need to check what will be involved. Does the airfield have very short runways, and if so, are you familiar with the short field technique, for example? If not, either get some extra training or go somewhere else. Remember, safety always comes first.

Checking You Can Land There

Business Trip

The fact that an airport exists does not mean that you are allowed to go there. Some airfields are privately owned and have restrictions on the types and numbers of aircraft which can visit. Some airfields close on certain days and times. You always need to check these types of things in advance. It is not a good idea to just turn up and then find that you are not allowed to land.

What sort of Aircraft are you Flying?

Not all airports are suitable for all types of aircraft . Again, if you are considering a short field, check if your aircraft is capable of that sort of landing in the space available.

If you are flying to an aircraft in the mountains, check your aircraft’s capabilities at altitude in the weather conditions at the time, and pay particular attention to your weight and balance calculations. You may find that visiting will be very difficult, or even impossible.

Preparation For Visiting New Airports

Moving on from the last section, it should be clear by now that a great deal of preparation is necessary before visiting a new destination. It is really not a good idea to just have a quick look at the sectional and then take off. There are a number of things you need to do first.

Check Weather

Always, always, ALWAYS get a weather forecast, and check the current conditions at the airport you plan to visit. Check the likely conditions at your home base on your return too. If you are not familiar with aviation weather reports such as TAFs and METARs, revise them in detail before you go. It is not enough to just look at the sky and hope for the best.

Checking Notams

NOTAMs

It is really important to always check NOTAMs, or Notices to Airmen. These will tell you of any reasons why you should not fly to your proposed destination or any possible difficulties on your route.

Many pilots tend to forget to do this, and you can often get away with that. But one day you are likely to find that there are real problems with your planned route, and it is a good idea to know about this in advance.

Using a Map as well as a GPS

These days, many of us tend to dispense with an aviation chart if we are going somewhere nearby and on a familiar route, particularly if we are navigating using GPS. But please make sure you have a chart in the plane, for emergencies if nothing else.

The GPS signal is not 100% reliable, and if you plan to navigate using ground features, bad weather could make this impossible.

I remember leaving Long Beach, in the Los Angeles area, and planning to navigate using freeways and the coast, as we all did in that area. Then the fog came down, and this was impossible. So it was back to basics – map and compass, taking a suitable heading, and making sure there was no controlled airspace on my route. Always have a backup plan like this.

Planning Routes and Diversions

Following on from that, always make sure you have a planned route, with suitable headings, and also planned diversions should it be necessary.

You never know when you may need to divert. On that same trip out of Long Beach, I was following the coast north, heading for Santa Barbara, when I was told the airspace was closed. Had I checked NOTAMs? Actually, I can’t remember!

Anyway, I had to either divert out to sea or go several miles inland. I’m not sure if I could have known this in advance, but I really wished I had. It would have been much easier than orbiting and planning a diversion on the spot. Perhaps remember the old military adage – ‘Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance’.

Safety Comes First

Always remember this. You may be looking forward to a nice day out, but make sure you consider safety before anything else. That is what all the above tips have basically been saying of course.

Recommended Places to Visit

Airport 1

So where should you go? As explained, you may want to look at your local area first, then go to places which are easy for you in terms of navigation and landing, particularly if you are fairly new to flying. But after this…what then?

It would be possible to recommend literally hundreds of places for various reasons. But I have simply picked out a dozen, six in the US and six in other countries. I am recommending all of them for specific reasons, either because the airport itself is interesting, or because you might want to visit a place of interest in the surrounding area. I have visited a number of them myself, but not quite all.

1) First Flight Airport, North Carolina

First Flight Airport, North Carolina

Ever heard of this airport? The name should be a clue. This is the site where the Wright Brothers undertook their first flight, way back in 1903. There is a Wright Brothers Monument here, right next to the landing strip. So if you can, do go and visit the place where it all started. It’s something every pilot should do.

2) Grand Canyon West Airport, Arizona

Grand Canyon West Airport, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven great natural wonders of the world and is somewhere you should really visit at least once in your life. And flying over it is definitely something not to be missed for any pilot. Unfortunately, there is a $100 fee to land at this airport, but it really is worth doing so anyway. The whole experience is truly awe-inspiring.

3) Catalina Airport, California

Catalina Airport, California

This is one I have visited, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Located on a 1,600-foot high mountain top at the center of Catalina Island, Catalina Airport is known as the ‘Airport in the Sky’. The approach is not easy, and neither is the landing, at altitude and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But if your flying is good enough, do go for it. If not, then consider taking an instructor with you, but go anyway. You will really enjoy it.

4) Big Bear Airport, California

Big Bear Airport, California

This is another airport I have visited and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend, but only for the experienced pilots among you. Big Bear sits in the San Bernardino mountain range, at 6,752 feet above sea level. It is the premier airport for those flying into the resorts of Big Bear Lake, Snow Summit, Bear Mountain, and other destinations.

The scenery is quite spectacular, as are the far-reaching views. But do calculate carefully before flying there – remember all your training concerning density altitude, because it is very relevant here. Again, if you are in any doubt about your abilities, take an instructor with you; you will learn a lot.

5) Block Island State Airport, Rhode Island

Block Island State Airport, Rhode Island

This airport is not well known, but it is definitely worth a visit. It is located twelve miles off the coast of Rhode Island, on Block Island, and serves one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast.

Block Island is a great destination for pilots who want to explore an area with few tourists, but with white sand beaches, ocean vistas, endless hiking trails, imposing coastal cliffs, interesting history, and exciting nightlife.

6) Skagway Airport, Alaska

Skagway Airport, Alaska

Flying in Alaska, wow! You will need experience of landing on windy runways, but landing between the snow-capped mountains at the ex-gold rush town of Skagway is something you will never forget.

The area also offers adventure, history, and a lively downtown that any pilot is sure to enjoy. But before coming here, it would be wise to talk with an experienced pilot in order to understand the hazards here. And again, if in doubt, take an instructor with you.

Rest of the World

Here are a few airports outside the USA which I would especially recommend if you have the opportunity to visit them. I have visited all of them and enjoyed it a great deal.

1) Barra Airport, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Barra Airport, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Barra is the smallest and most southerly of the Outer Hebrides chain of islands, off the west coast of Scotland. It is famous for being the only licensed airport in the world that uses a beach as the runway.

Yes, you did hear correctly; aircraft land on the beach! The airport is only open at certain times, depending on the tides, although scheduled flights do arrive regularly. Landing there is not as difficult as it sounds, although when I visited, we did request to follow the scheduled flight in so that we could see just how it was done.

2) Victoria Falls Airport, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls Airport, Zimbabwe

I visited this airport many years ago, but despite what you may hear, I gather it is still a safe place to go to. The airport’s main reason for existence is the tourism connected with the spectacular falls, which are most certainly worth visiting.

It is a large international airport with a lot of commercial traffic, but flying in here can be most enjoyable. And of course, it is the perfect base for visiting the falls

3) Le Touquet Airport, France

Le Touquet Airport, France

Le Touquet Airport in Northern France is perhaps best known as being the destination for many British pilots arriving from across the English Channel, either for day trips or to begin a touring holiday in Europe.

Consequently, nearly everyone there speaks English, which is not always true when flying in France, even at large airports. The airport is well used for traveling pilots.

The town of Le Touquet is only a short distance away, and the airport staff will help with taxis, booking hotels, and so on if you wish to stay in the area. The town itself is attractive, interesting, and full of good restaurants and cafes, so a most pleasant place to visit.

4) Carcassonne Airport, France

Carcassonne Airport, France

Carcassonne is a beautiful town of great historic interest, and the airport is located very close to the town itself. It is a most enjoyable place to visit, with lots to see and do in the immediate area.

5) Inisheer Airport, Aran Islands, Ireland

Inisheer Airport, Aran Islands, Ireland

Inisheer Airport is located on the small island of Inisheer, one of the Aran Islands, off the coast of Ireland. It is a most interesting – if rather hair-raising – place to land, with a runway which stretches literally from shore to shore across the island. With the short runway and difficult wind conditions it is not an easy place to visit, but if you are up to it, it is definitely a unique experience.

6) Manchester Airport, England

Manchester Airport, England

Finally, at the other extreme from the last airport, why not try flying into Manchester International Airport in the north of England. You will be mixing with a huge amount of scheduled airline traffic, and the forest of taxiways you are presented with on landing may give you cause for alarm if you are not experienced at flying into this sort of airport. But don’t worry; the ground controllers are happy to give you ‘ progressive taxi instructions’ if asked.

Other Points

Here are a few more points you may wish to consider when flying to new airports.

If Not Completely Confident, Take an Instructor With You

I have mentioned this a few times but it’s worth emphasizing. It is always worth taking an instructor with you if a destination or landing looks as though it is beyond your capabilities. You will learn a lot, enjoy it more, and it will be far safer than simply blundering through.

Hire an Aircraft Nearer Your Destination

Obviously, some of these destinations may be too far away from your home base. But it is usually possible to hire an aircraft somewhere closer to where you want to fly, or even at the destination itself. If flying outside the US, check as to the status of your license in that country, but you will often find that it will be accepted. If not, again, take an instructor with you.

Weight and Balance: Keep Personal Items to a Minimum on Longer Trips

if you are flying in a small aircraft, on a long trip, it is often impossible to fit in a suitcase as well as all the aviation paraphernalia you need. So learn to travel light, and keep personal items to a minimum. It is far safer to do this than to exceed the aircraft’s weight and balance limitations.

Emergency Equipment

Finally, make sure you have all the emergency equipment you might need. Don’t assume that all airports will have things such as aircraft tie-downs; some won’t so take your own. Carry an emergency handheld radio in case the one in the aircraft suddenly dies, and have all the charts you could possibly need. In an emergency, even a minor one, you’ll be glad that you did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: can you fly anywhere you like to any airport.

Answer: Yes…and no. You will need to check regulations, both local, international, and specific airport ones. And of course, you will need to bear in mind your own limitations. But beyond that, you can fly pretty much anywhere you wish.

Question: Can you land at places other than airports?

Answer: If there is space and it is legal and safe, then you can. Some fly-ins take place in large fields. Many people have landed on beaches, or even on friends’ properties. But it does depend on many factors, and safety must always come first.

Question: Do you always need to file a flight plan?

Answer: Not always. Check local regulations to find out if it is compulsory. But it is always the safest option, and it can never be wrong to do so.

Question: Should you tell someone where you’re going?

Answer: This is always a good idea, particularly if you are alone and you have not filed a flight plan.

Question: Should you take passengers?

Answer: Taking passengers is a great deal of fun. But it also adds greatly to your workload. So if you are a relatively inexperienced pilot, you might want to wait a while before you take all the friends and relatives with you.

Question: What about when you arrive?

Answer: Airports differ as to what they provide in the way of parking, backup, and so on. It is always a good idea to find out in advance what is on offer, and what you will need to do for yourself. Remember – you will have no car with you, and you may need to hire a taxi or find some other means of onward travel.

Question: I’m very new to flying; where should I go?

Answer: As mentioned above, start with visiting somewhere local, where it is easy to fly and to land. Then gradually extend yourself. Make haste slowly; there is nothing to be gained by trying to push yourself too hard.

Now you have most of the information you need to start visiting new destinations and airports. So I suggest your start as soon as possible – decide where to go, book your aircraft, and do some prior planning.

Your PPL has opened up the world for you, so now start to make the most of it. Don’t become one of those pilots who only fly around their local airfield every week, and rapidly become bored with the whole thing. Go further afield, stretch yourself, and see what the world has to offer. You will never regret it.

10 Top Airports for Food and Drinks, According to the Experts

Get a taste of local flavors inside these airports' terminals.

Let's be blunt: Flying can be a drag. From ensuring you have enough time to get from your house to the airport, through security, and to wherever the hell your gate is, the idea of going through an airport can make the very act of travel too stressful. But we're here to tell you that this doesn't need to be the case. All you need to do is pick the right airport. And get the right snack.

The 2024 Global Tastemakers panel of food and travel experts nominated their favorite airports for dining and drinks. Here are the travel hubs we consider top-notch and what flavors you can expect inside.

Winner: Jewel Changi Airport (Singapore)

Find yourself in the midst of Singapore's best flavors literally right out the gate at the Jewel Changi Airport , named the best hotel airport for food and drinks in the 2024 Global Tastemakers Awards. With more than 100 food vendors, you're bound to find something to delight your taste buds. For something warm and inviting, head straight to Kiwami , a ramen spot on Level 1 with slurp-worthy broth made with Japanese pork bones that have been simmering for more than 10 hours. Or, snag a local bite at Jumbo Seafood on Level 3 for a taste of its award-winning chili crab, then make your way to Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery on Level 2 for the perfect sweet treat before departure.

Tokyo-Narita International Airport (Narita, Japan)

Narita International Airport offers a glimpse into Japan's culinary traditions. In the airport, guests can get their first (or last) taste of spectacular sushi at Sushi Kyotatsu , which has locations in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Don't miss its bluefin tuna, sourced locally from Toyosu Market. Or go for a heartier meal at Tempura Nihonbashi Tamai in Terminal 2, which once again highlights seasonal and fresh local produce, all wrapped up in a crunchy bite.

Dubai International Airport (Dubai, UAE)

Luxury reigns supreme inside the Dubai International Airport. Between the high-end shops, guests can dig into rich culinary experiences like L’Éclair de Génie , a pastry shop offering every type of eclair under the sun, and find plenty of Middle Eastern flavors at spots like Comptoir Libanais , a grab-and-go Lebanese delight. But this is a truly international destination, meaning there are lots of international and recognizable brands like Shake Shack in Terminal 3 and Pret A Manger in Terminal 1 and 5, if you're feeling like you need a taste of the U.S. or UK.

Heathrow Airport (London, England)

Have a quintessentially British experience at London's Heathrow Airport with a quick stop at Gordon Ramsay Plane Food , which brings gourmet dining to Terminal 5. In fact, all of Terminal 5 is well-known as the best spot for dining in the United Kingdom's largest airport. Here, travelers will find eateries that cater to every craving, from quick snacks at Giraffe to luxurious sit-down meals at Caviar House & Prunier Seafood Bar .

Istanbul Airport (Istanbul, Turkey)

Istanbul Airport's food selection is a true reflection of its position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Stop in at spots like Simit Sarayi (at both Gate 9 and 13) for a quick taste of Turkish street food with its fresh simits and pastries, or go for a more in-depth meal at Cuisine Anatolia at the International Airside A-B Pier, showcasing the range of Turkish cuisine through dishes like kebabs and rack of lamb.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (Netherlands)

Get a taste of modern Dutch culture at the Schiphol airport. In Café Rembrandt , nicknamed "Schiphol's living room," travelers can kick back and enjoy local beers and snacks (even at 10 a.m. because there are no rules in an airport), or take a short culinary tour of the Netherlands at Dutch Kitchen , located on Holland Boulevard, which serves traditional dishes like Dutch pancakes and herring paired perfectly with forward-thinking cocktails that feature Jenever, a Dutch-made gin.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York City)

JFK's food selection is almost as massive as the airport itself. After hopping off a flight or before boarding, grab an iconic taste of New York at spots like The Palm Bar & Grille , located in Terminal 4, which brings New York steakhouse energy to the airport. But, like others on the list, JFK is truly an international hub, so it's easy to find global flavors, including Soy and Sake for ramen in Terminal 1 and Mi Casa Cantina and Restaurant in Terminal 4.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Georgia)

At Hartsfield-Jackson, travelers will find plenty of Southern hospitality. Pull up a seat for a welcome hello or goodbye at Bantam and Biddy by Shaun Doty in Concourse C, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and focuses on tasty chicken meals, or head to One Flew South in Concourse E for a sophisticated sit-down meal that blends Japanese inspired flavors with Southern favorites, including shishito peppers and fully stacked burgers.

San Francisco International Airport (California)

The San Francisco International Airport offers a fantastic array of dining styles for travelers to enjoy as they prepare to go from point A to point B. Grab something locally sourced at spots like Napa Farms Market in Terminal 2, which epitomizes California's farm-to-table vibe with its bagel bar, soups, and sandwiches, all using area favorites like Cowgirl Cheese and Acme Bread.

Also try The Plant Café Organic in Terminal 2, which, as the name suggests, uses only organic ingredients for its salads, juices, and sandwiches.

Vancouver International Airport (Canada)

Celebrate the natural bounty of British Columbia when traveling through Vancouver's international airport with dining spots like Globe@YVR , located at US Terminal Level 4, which offers both gorgeous runway views and dishes that incorporate sustainable seafood caught right in the Pacific Northwest. Those looking to try British Columbia's wines can head straight to Jetside Lounge , also located at US Terminal Level 4, where the Okanagan wines are always flowing.

Plus One: Munich Airport (Germany)

Munich's International Airport embraces the Bavarian lifestyle in all the ways one would hope.  Here, travelers can indulge in a beer at Airbräu , the world's first airport brewery, or try the Michelin-starred Mountain Hub Gourmet Restaurant . And if you time your visit right you can explore the annual Christmas Market and Oktoberfest celebrations, which feature special menus and live music right inside the terminal.

Best Things To Do In Singapore Airport (Changi)

1. see the rain vortex waterfall (jewel).

If there’s one thing you have to see in the Singapore airport, it’s this giant manmade waterfall! The HSBC Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, cascading down 40 meters and through 7 stories.

The waterfall is free to visit, and highly photogenic at all times of day. It’s set in a beautiful jungle area called the Shiseido Forest Valley, which is covered with green foliage, trees, and walking paths. There’s even a free sound and light show at night.

The HSBC Rain Vortex is located in the Changi Jewel, which is public (not airside), so you need to pass through immigration and ‘enter’ Singapore to see it. It’s connected to Terminal 1, and you can also reach it from other parts of the Singapore airport using the Skytrain, shuttle bus, or on foot.

The forest area is open 24/7, but the waterfall is only flowing during the daytime. You can find more information on the official website . It’s one of the best things to do in Changi airport on a layover!     OPENING HOURS

Singapore is a great country for shopaholics, and the Changi airport is no exception.

You can find everything here, including luxury goods, jewelry, watches, clothing, shoes, electronics, toys, gifts, souvenirs, chocolate, wine, and more!

On the Changi website, you can browse through a full shopping directory for the Singapore airport, as well as opening hours for all shopping outlets.

7. Relax At The Spa (Terminal 1/2/3)

If you really want to relax and unwind between flights, you can hit up a day spa for massage therapy, foot reflexology, manicure/pedicure, and shower facilities.

8. Stay In An Airport Hotel (Terminal 1/2/3)

If you have a longer transit in the Singapore airport, you’ll want to book a stay at one of the comfy airport hotels.

There are transit hotels located in Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Changi airport. Here’s a brief summary of your options:

  • Aerotel Transit Hotel . Located on the airside of Terminal 1. Solo or double rooms are available, and they also have an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and more.
  • Ambassador Transit Hotel . Located on the airside of Terminals 2 and 3. Clean and comfortable rooms, but slightly overpriced for what you get.

Terminal 1 is home to the Water Lily Garden. Terminal 2 is home to the Sunflower Garden, which has cheery patch of sunflowers, and the Orchid Garden, which has more than 700 orchids from 30 varieties, arranged according to their colors and shapes.

All three of these gardens are located on the airside of Changi airport, and they’re free to visit!

Singapore airport has independent lounges with comfortable seating, charging outlets, WiFi access, international TV channels, and complimentary food and beverages. For an extra charge, they also have massage and shower facilities.

These are paid lounges, but they’re open to travelers with any airline or ticket class. You don’t need a membership of any kind, and you can make an online booking in advance.

The Plaza Premium Lounge is located in Terminal 1 of the airport, while the Blossom Lounge is in Terminal 4. These are both located in transit (airside).

11. Swim In The Rooftop Pool (Terminal 1)

Did you know there’s a rooftop swimming pool and jacuzzi at the Singapore airport, and they sell day passes? It’s one of the best things to do in Changi airport!

The swimming pool is part of the Aerotel Transit Hotel , which is located on the airside of Terminal 1 in Changi airport, and it’s generally open daily from 12 PM (noon) to 9 PM.

You can buy a day pass for $20 Singapore Dollars per person, which includes access to the pool, jacuzzi, and poolside bar, plus free towels and shower facilities.

Or, if you want to stay and enjoy the pool longer, you can make an overnight booking at the Aerotel and get complimentary pool access.

12. Enjoy The Free Movie Theaters (Terminal 2/3)

If you have enough time to spare, you should definitely take advantage of the free movie theaters in the Singapore airport!

There are free theaters located airside in Terminals 2 and 3, and they show lots of great movies for adults and kids alike. Just remember to set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget about your boarding time!

Aside from occasional maintenance, Changi’s movie theaters are open every day, 24 hours a day. You can find more information about the location and opening hours on their website.

13. Visit The Butterfly Garden (Terminal 3)

Changi is unique for having the world’s first butterfly garden in an airport! It’s a nice little tropical habitat with a grotto waterfall and more than 1,000 tropical butterflies from about 40 species.

We had fun walking through the two-story garden and taking pictures of the butterflies up close, and sometimes a butterfly will even land on you. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Singapore airport!

The Butterfly Garden is free to visit, and it’s open 24/7. It’s located on the airside of Terminal 3, and if you’re in transit you can also reach it from other parts of the Singapore airport using the Skytrain or on foot.

14. Go Down The Slide (Terminal 3)

Last but not least, Changi is home to Singapore’s tallest slide, and it’s also the tallest slide in an airport anywhere in the world!

It’s a curvy slide that is 12 meters tall (four stories high), and should be lots of fun for kids and kids at heart. The Slide is open daily from 12 PM (noon) to 10:30 PM. You can find more information on the Changi website .

The Slide is part of the public area of Changi (not airside), so you need to pass through immigration and ‘enter’ Singapore to see it. It’s located in Terminal 3, and you can also reach it from other parts of the Singapore airport using the Skytrain, shuttle bus, or on foot.

15. Visit The Country Of Singapore

After you’ve exhausted all of the best things to do in Singapore airport, it’s time to go outside and see the country of Singapore!

If you have a long layover in Singapore of at least 5 or 6 hours, that’s generally considered to be enough time to exit the airport and go see some things in the city, although you’ll still want to be conservative and keep an eye on your watch.

Better yet, if you have plenty of free time in Southeast Asia, then you should definitely book a hotel and spend a few days in Singapore seeing all of the famous sights in the country, like Chinatown, Little India, and Gardens by the Bay.

For day tours in Singapore, we recommend GetYourGuide . We’ve used them for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great!

You can use this service to pre-book entrance tickets to Singapore’s popular attractions, and they also have private tours that take you to some of the best places in Singapore. Highly recommended!

YVR Airport – 12 Cool Things To See In Vancouver

First Nation's art and aquarium in Vancouver

The airport is my favorite place, only because it generally means I’m going somewhere new and exciting. I’m getting to travel again. But other than that, airports are often busy, chaotic and not a lot of fun. Which is why I appreciate airports that make an effort. YVR Airport does just that.

Vancouver International Airport consistently makes it to lists of top airports in the world, as well as most sustainable airports in the world. It’s not hard to see why .

They put a lot of stock in green initiatives and have some very cool artwork and design features that make this one of the most relaxing airports I’ve visited. Vancouver just so happens to be home for me, so I’m there quite often.

12 Cool Features At YVR Airport

For a small airport, with only one main terminal, YVR Airport has a lot to see. Keep reading to find out some of the best features at the airport. Although, if you visit yourself, I can guarantee you’ll likely find even more.

YVR Airport Welcome Figures

WHERE: International Arrivals Hall

Welcome Figures at YVR airport arrival's hall

Two of the first things that greets you as you pass through the gates of international arrivals are the gigantic First Nations Welcome Figures . Although you may pass one or two other welcome figures throughout various spots in the airport – including the arrival hall at customs – these ones are harder to ignore.

And why would you want to? These beautifully carved, traditional Clayoquot statues have been here since 1986.

As well as being a reminder of the traditional Musqueam lands the airport stands on, I like to think the figures embody the friendly and welcoming nature of Vancouver, and Canada.

Jellyfish exhibit

WHERE: International Arrivals – between gates and customs

jellyfish at the Vancouver aquarium

Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park is one of the top attractions in the city. But at over $40 entry, it’s not the cheapest activity. So be sure to check out some of their exhibits for free if you’re flying…at YVR airport.

Coming in from an international flight, there’s a small jellyfish aquarium, prior to immigration . Here you can see the mesmerizing jellies floating around the blue water. Keep reading to find out about other aquarium exhibits at Vancouver Airport.

Top YVR Travel Tip: Find the Vancouver Aquarium store at YVR close to the Domestic check in desks.

Bill Reid Sculpture

WHERE: International Departures, just before security gates

Bill Reid first nation's artwork in Vancouver departure's terminal

One of the best pieces of art to find in YVR is this beautiful indigenous sculpture The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe .

Weighing 11,000 lbs, the sculpture by famous Canadian artist Bill Reid, features celebrated animals and characters from aboriginal mythology.

Local’s Tip: Like this art piece? See more of Bill Reid’s work at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in downtown Vancouver.

YVR Airport River and Aquarium

WHERE: International Departures – after security

River and aquarium at Vancouver International Airport

There’s a river in the airport? Sure is – and it creates a peaceful vibe even in one of the most high traffic areas . Through into International Departures, the river can be seen right after passing through the Duty Free store.

Seating all around it make for a relaxing place to sit and read a book pre-flight, and there are even a couple of bridges passing over it. Make sure to follow the river to the large aquarium at the end, found under a stunning First Nations carving.

Dresses on display

WHERE: International Departures, Gate D55 (after security)

sustainable dresses display at Vancouver's International terminal

Fashion is art too, and YVR has a few different fashion items on display for travelers to see . Be inspired to don a nice gown with some unique creations around the airport. From antique items to local fashion school designs, keep an eye out for some of these pretty frocks.

The above gown can be found in international departures around Gate D55, and is made of brown paper. This is definitely in keeping with the sustainability theme that runs through YVR airport.

Model planes collection

WHERE: Along the moving walkway between B and C Gates (Canada Departures, after security)

model plane collection at YVR airport, Vancouver

Where better to showcase a bazillion model airplanes than an airport? OK, maybe there aren’t that many, but there sure are a lot of model airplanes here. In display cases on the way to the C Gates this is one more reason to skip the moving walkway and walk instead.

Get a closer look at a model plane from what seems to be every airline and then some. From run-of-the-mill passenger planes to rare and specialty jets, see them all in great detail . This is just part of a much larger collection, given to YVR to display, all depicting planes which have been through the airport here.

YVR Airport Yoga room

WHERE: International Departures, Upper Lounge Area, near Gate D58 (after security)

Yoga room at Vancouver International Airport

Opposite the beautiful atrium (keep reading to find out more about that), there is an upper lounge area. A side room up there is set aside for yoga. Anyone looking to do some stretches pre-flight, you can give your lululemons a workout – after all it wouldn’t be Vancouver without a little yoga .

There are additional stretching areas in the newly created Quiet Area around gate D67 (also in international departures). There’s a stretching mat, or for those who are not looking to get active you can relax in the comfy seating. As airports are a busy (and often noisy) place, this is the perfect spot for those looking for a little zen before their flight.

Rushing traveler statue

WHERE: Domestic Departures, Gate B28 (after security)

public art in Vancouver - the Flying Traveler

If there’s one thing in the airport that makes me feel seen it’s this statue. The whimsical “Flying Traveller” statue looks like it depicts one in every three visitors to the airport . Rushing frantically to get to their flight.

The art piece was commission specifically for YVR Airport, and if nothing it’ll make you smile as you pass it. Unless you’re the one running for your flight of course.

Disney models collection

Disney collection in Vancouver, Canada's airport

Hands up who else loves Disney? You don’t have to go all the way to Florida or California to see your favorite Disney character. In fact, there are literally hundreds of them on display at Vancouver International Airport.

The private collection of models, stuffed animals and every other depiction of Disney characters you can imagine will keep kids (and adults) amused while waiting for a flight . Peruse hundreds of Mickeys, or my favorite, Pluto, behind glass display cases in the Domestic departures terminal.

Healthy vending machines at YVR Airport

WHERE: Domestic, USA and International Departures – all after security

healthy vending machines at YVR airport, Vancouver

This might not excite everyone but finding somewhat healthy food in an airport is not always easy . Too quick are we to run to McDonalds or some other fast food establishment in our hurry to get to the plane. But at YVR there is a healthy vending machine, which I was excited to see while waiting for my last flight.

There’s at least one in each terminal (domestic, international and USA) and unlike the shops, they’re available 24-7. Which is great news because a lot of the shops are closed before those late night flights leave. Grab a smoothie, wrap or salad ready for your next flight.

Travel Tip: Keep an eye out for machines like these, they’re popping up in airports more and more now. My first experience was at Chicago O’Hare – they have them everywhere and the food was amazing, and super fresh.

Welcome to British Columbia sign

WHERE: Domestic departures – in front of the food court area by Gate B14

welcome to British Columbia

If nothing other than for an Insta-worthy shot, this Welcome to British Columbia sign is worth a peek if you’re close by.

Located in the Domestic departures terminal after security, it’s actually next to the kids play area . Flanked by an old school camper treehouse, it really does depict the outdoors that BC is known for.

YVR Airport Atrium

WHERE: International Departures, near gate D58 (after security)

YVR airport atrium, Vancouver, Canada

One of my new favorite areas in Vancouver International Airport is the atrium area in International departures . If the river and aquarium isn’t doing it for you, head further in and check out this new spectacular area. The focal point is the new open air atrium – complete with trees, soil and fresh air.

There are simulated nature sounds, digital glass panels showing everything from swimming salmon to bears and even little tidal pools. In a potentially chaotic place, this is a sea of calm – something YVR does very well.

YVR Airport – Not Just Any Other Airport

After traveling the world I can say I have been to some pretty dismal airports. Void of character, or just plain chaotic, most are nothing more than a place to jump on a plane. But since we all have to arrive hours before our flights, it’s places like YVR Airport in Vancouver that really make travel more enjoyable.

Relax by a serene river, appreciate some local indigenous art, or work out some pre-travel tension in the fitness areas.

YVR Airport is not just another airport, it’s a welcome change from the norm. Whether you’re arriving, departing or merely transiting through, there’s something cool to see in every part of this top Canadian airport.

If you’ve enjoyed this post, leave a comment or share using the social media buttons below. Have you been to YVR Airport before? What was your favorite feature? Feel free to share your favorite airport in the comments below.

11 thoughts on “YVR Airport – 12 Cool Things To See In Vancouver”

Who would have thought that an airport could contain so many attractions. Parts seem like an art gallery/museum and are very creative. Never heard of a jellyfish exhibit at an airport though, that is very different.. I shall hopefully be flying into Vancouver airport on my next visit to see friends there so will look out for these attractions.

I’ve been to Vancouver Airport numerous times and I was unfamiliar with most of these. It dawned on me I’ve only flown domestic to and from there. However, I completely agree it’s one of my favorite airports as there’s very little chaos and easy to navigate. You’re lucky it’s your home airport. Mine is pearson.

This is an interesting post on an airport! There seem to be several things to do which would be handy in a layover too. I would love to try out the Yoga room. It must be good to do some stretching after a flight when sitting for a long time. Nice post!

I like when airports make some efforts and go beyond their function of transport hub. In a way they are not just gates to the world but also represent the city. Vancouver definitely got the memo and understood the assignment. The wooden statues are a wonderful tribute to the Canadian indigenous tribes and instantly connect a visitor to this part of Vancouvian history. The sculpture by Bill Reid or the jellyfish aquariums not only are stylish elements to enhance the airport they further add excitement for discovering more in Vancouver. I’m sold!

Carolin | Solo Travel Story

I love YVR! Coming home after an epic trip isn’t always easy, but arriving at YVR does help because it’s so pretty and welcoming. You’ve noted so many great art pieces and little mini museum exhibits, which I appreciate more than rows of shops. I haven’t yet visited the yoga room so I will have to remember that for next time

Spectacular! I would never have thought that an airport could have so many cute and interesting things in its enclosure. It’s funny because with so many pieces of varied art, it almost looks like a gallery. No doubt this airport will not be difficult to spend the time of a longer layover!

I must admit that I don’t really notice the airports when I travel – I’m too focused on my destination and get exploring! It impresses me that they’d put such an effort into so many things to see. I would imagine it’s perfect for a layover though – more than just overpriced food and shops!

I generally loathe airports. We love travelling but hate all the faff as well as spending hours hanging around at the airport with nothing to do. So it was like a breath of fresh air to read about Vancouver. What a cool place! There are loads of things to see and do – art, sculpture, nature (how brilliant to have a river!), even yoga – I think we would actually enjoy spending time here. Other airports should take note!

What an original blog post, loved reading it! I know there are few interesting airports in the world such as Changi in Singapore but didn’t know Vancouver was one of them. The art installations look incredible and I love aquariums and could spend hours there so for once I wouldn’t mind a long layover in an airport!

Will be flying into Vancouver in July for a couple of days then onto a cruise to Alaska. So excited to tour the airport.

Amazing, I’ve heard great things about the Alaska cruise, I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time. Enjoy your visit to Vancouver

Places To Visit Around Istanbul’s Airports

Istanbul is a giant metropol that has over 25 million residents.

This number increases every single day with new people arriving, falling in love with the city and ending up staying here. There are also too many  places to visit around Istanbul Airports . Istanbul has two big airports, both located on each side of the city. Let’s take a close look at the facilities around the airport.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport

Sabiha Gökçen Airport  takes its name from Sabiha Gökçen, the adopted daughter of Atatürk and the first woman pilot of Turkey. The airport is located on  the Asian side of the Bosphorus  and is somewhat far away from the city center. If you don’t have more than 24 hours of layover, it is not worth the trip and the hassle to visit the city. With that being said, if you want an Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport Transfer that makes your trip fast and comfortable, then it is definitely worth it.

If you plan to spend your layover around the airport, there are some time passing options to discover. Viaport Asia Outlet shopping mall is one of them. With its open roof, the Viaport mall offers a unique shopping experience, making you feel like you are at a shopping village, where you can enjoy the bright sunshine and the fresh air as you hop from one boutique to the other.

If you are into car racing, good news for you! The Intercity Istanbul Park is located very close to the airport, where you can challenge your friends and family to beat your fast & furious skills.

Nature lovers will love this! Aydos Forest   is only a short taxi ride from the Sabiha Gökçen airport, where you can hike, get some fresh air, have a picnic, or even check off your daily jogging goals.

If you crave for some good Turkish Kebab, try the Tarihi Çınaraltı Restaurant. Alternatively, go to the  Bosphorus  for a walk or to feed the seagulls, a popular local activity.

Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport  was opened only a few months ago and it was built to be the biggest airport of not only Istanbul but also Europe. It is now active with flights currently taking off and landing at from many cities worldwide. Unfortunately, there are not many spots to discover nearby, it is in a secluded area of the city.

On the European side of Istanbul, the 2nd Airport is located between the villages of Tayakadın and Akpınar on the Black Sea coast. From Istanbul Airport, which will serve on an area of approximately 77 square kilometers, it is possible to reach Taksim, one of Istanbul’s cultural capitals in 15-20 minutes. In addition, the Istanbul Airport is at the junction of Çatalca and Göktürk Arnavutköy and is very close to Lake Terkos.

Istanbul Airport can be reached via the Northern Marmara Motorway and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Therefore, transportation to the airport is very convenient and easy. If you want to travel quickly, smoothly and comfortably to/from the Istanbul Airport, the best option is to get private transport from Istanbul Airport that takes you to the city center as quickly as possible, so you don’t waste your precious time waiting for public transportation.

Arnavutköy  is another option that is somewhat near the airport. For beach-goers, taking a cab to the   Kilyos beach for a quick dipping the toe session can be fun.

Atatürk Airport , serving as a civil airport since 1953, was replaced by the new Istanbul Airport on 6 April 2019. When you buy your ticket from Istanbul Airport, keep in mind that transportation will be different from the previous one.

We suggest getting an Istanbul Tourist Pass to make the most of your time in Istanbul. The pass offers an option that you can use for up to 24 hours, that includes fast track entry to the city’s most popular sights such as the Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace Museum, The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Hagia Irene, and many more. The pass also has private airport transfer, saving you time during your  Istanbul trip .

Having more than 20 years of experience in the tourism sector, istanbul.com assures its visitors a wondrous trip experience thanks to its wide range of packages. You can easily book  Istanbul tour packages  via chat service, mobile app support and credit card payment options.

Arrival and Departure: Moscow Airports, Train Stations, Buses

Flying to / from moscow.

If you take a domestic flight , it'll be either to / from Sheremetyevo 1 or Domodedovo airports.

The new and renovated Vnukovo airport serves mostly domestic flights (UtAir, Vladivostok Avia, flights to North Caucasus), as well as German Wings flights to/from Germany.

To get from the airports to the center of Moscow you can take Aeroexpress train, which is the fastest and easiest way to get to the city. A train ride takes about 35-40 minutes and costs about 500R (€8) one way. Tickets can be purchased on the spot or using Aeroexpress iPhone app.  You can also get a taxi from the airport . On average a trip to the center of the city takes about 1 hour (can be more during peak times and less in the night and on the weekends), prices start at €20 one way if you order a taxi through Uber or Yandex.Taxi. The problem is that there are many taxis outside and no designated waiting point, so if you don't speak Russian and don't have a Russian phone number it may be hard to coordinate with the driver. You can use one of the taxi desks at the airport (then you pay about €30 to €50 for a ride) or you can also order a transfer from the airport to any address in Moscow online through our site. We pass your orders to a reliable partner: they have English-speaking drivers, 24-hour customer support, and confirm within a few minutes.
