Asheville, North Carolina

For a low-key romantic weekend away, the art-centric mountain town of Asheville won’t do you wrong. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the trendy yet traditional city, the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t to be missed. The 250-room Gilded Age chateau sits on 8,000 acres of highly-curated gardens and meadow (all designed by the very guy behind NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted) with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a super casual backdrop. Peeling yourself away from the largest mansion in the U.S., you’ll get your night’s sleep at The Windsor Boutique Hotel , a homey 14-suite rustic stay right in the heart of downtown. End your mini-retreat with brunch at Cúrate , a buzzy tapas-inspired restaurant with crowd pleasers like honey-drizzled fried eggplant and traditional tortilla española.

Seattle, Washington

Kimpton Hotels know how to turn on the quirk, and the historic Palladian is no exception. Guest rooms at the Belltown spot work screenprinted Mr. T and David Bowie pillows, vintage maps, and smart brass fixtures into an otherwise classic mix. Two blocks away, you’ll find the famous Pike Place Market , your go-to place for quick bites, while luxe sit-down meals are best at The Butcher’s Table , which delivers with a raw bar, inventive sides, and every cut of steak known to man. To walk it all off, head for exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass , an IG goldmine dripping in galleries of vibrant glass sculptures—the center of which is a suspended red, yellow, and amber floral piece that lives in the Glasshouse.

Miami Beach, Florida

Bed down at the ultra-quirky Freehand Miami for a stay packed with vintage travel ephemera, mod furniture (making use of a ROYGBIV palette), and a social courtyard with a pool, bocce, yoga, and art classes. Dinner is to be had at Byblos , a design-savvy, family-style Eastern Mediterranean joint that serves up duck kibbeh, Persian fried chicken, and fattouche, in an impossibly bright (and chic) dining room. Art is all around in the Magic City, and to see the best of it, you don’t need a ticket or a proper tour—simply take yourself on a self-guided walk around Ocean Drive’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings, making sure to stop for photos at favorites like Hotel Breakwater South Beach , the Leslie Hotel , the Essex House Hotel , and The Tides South Beach .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The boutique Palomar Philadelphia deftly spins an eccentric take on a classic American design scheme with neon presidential portraits, rainbow-hued busts, and plush velvet seating. Take an hour or so to hit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , a museum, outdoor art installation, and indoor gallery from mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, which takes up half a block on the once-dilapidated (and now handsomely revitalized) South Street. Or swing by the Barnes Foundation  to see a stunning display of French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. For some Philly history that isn’t the Liberty Bell, you can check out Eastern State Penitentiary —a massive, fortified prison that once held Al Capone—on an audio-guided tour narrated by the one and only Steve Buscemi. Afterwards, skip the over-hyped cheesesteaks at dueling shops Geno’s and Pat’s , and head instead for the Reading Terminal Market , where you can nom on pad thai, oyster sliders, and sweet dessert crepes all under one roof.

Austin, Texas

A weekend is all you need to see the very best of Texas’s coolest city. Kick it off with a locals-only brunch at Elizabeth St. Cafe , a chic French-Vietnamese boulangerie where coconut water and preserved tangerine margaritas are served in Chinese takeout containers. Newer spots on our radar include the Southern-inspired Colleens Kitchen, Pool Burger (we love the Blue Hawaiian, topped with grilled pineapple slices, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and Thousand Island dressing), and Aviary Wine & Kitchen. For some retail therapy, head to South Congress for an afternoon at the boutiques; United Apparel Liquidators is the place for designer couture (Balenciaga, Rag & Bone, Givenchy, to name a few) at bargain basement discounts. Don’t leave the city without going for a dip at Barton Springs Pool , the aquifer-fed swimming hole of choice where a young Robert Redford learned how to swim.

Chicago, Illinois

You can’t go to Chi-town without stopping by the Art Institute of Chicago . We’d say the same about leafy Garfield Park Conservatory , built on nearly five acres in 1906 and often referred to as “landscape art under glass;” the Chicago architecture river cruise ; and, of course, Wrigley Field . (Yes, all of these are touristy, but so worth it.) You could spend an entire weekend eating your way through this city. Some of our favorite spots to hit up now include the Michelin-starred brewpub, Band of Bohemia; the wildly popular Korean-American restaurant, Parachute (book early!); and the British-inspired Owen and Engine , which serves one of the finest burgers in town. As for where to stay, we’re digging Hotel Zachary , with its stunning grand staircase and knockout views of Wrigley Field from almost every room.

Boulder, Colorado

Just north of Denver, an outdoorsy paradise where locals are tanned, toned, and likely just back from a trail run awaits. Catch up with the best of them on the one-mile First Flatiron trail , which winds through Boulder’s iconic sandstone slab rock formations. Break for afternoon tea in an intricately carved wooden teahouse at Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse originally made in Tajikistan—it’s a highbrow prelude to an afternoon tour of Avery Brewing , home to the hoppy India Pale Ale. After a couple of brews, head back to your hotel (there’s the funky, low-key Basecamp and more upscale St. Julien Hotel and Spa ) for a quick nap before dinner at the ever-popular northeastern Italian-inspired restaurant Frasca Food and Wine run by Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson.

New Orleans, Louisiana

In the land of beignets, po’ boys and kicked-up cajun cuisine, a weekend in NOLA is all about EATING. Start the gluttony with the classic creole-inspired brunch (and 25 cent martinis!) at Commander’s Palace —the wild Louisiana white shrimp stuffed with spicy tasso ham, Crystal hot sauce, pickled okra, and pepper jelly is a must. And we can’t leave out classics like Cafe Du Monde’s famous deep-fried pastry, Bon Ton Cafe’s jambalaya, and Bevi Seafood Co.’s peacemaker po’ boy full of fried shrimp, swiss cheese, and roast beef gravy with a side of seafood gumbo. Newcomers worth checking out include Josephine Estelle , the Italian osteria at the Ace Hotel . Alternatively, skip all of that and go from breakfast to lunch to dinner at the Roch Market food hall. You’ll want to pack those fat pants.

Savannah, Georgia

Warning: A trip to Savannah is highly caloric. But if you don’t indulge, you’re not doing it right. The line runs down the block for Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room , for very good reason: the fried chicken, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese are so good, you’ll want to get in line all over again for dinner. Explore the city’s art scene at the various galleries around City Market on your own or sign up for a tour on the second Saturday of every month. History buffs can learn about Savannah’s past at the 1868 Mercer Williams House , the former home of Jim Williams and the site of the killing of Danny Hansford in May of 1981 (remember, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?). It’s also worth checking out the iconic Bonaventure Cemetery , dripping in Spanish moss and rumored to be full of ghosts—you can shake off the heebie-jeebies with a jalapeño margarita at the 18th century Olde Pink House .

San Diego, California

Of course, you’ll want to hit the beach in San Diego. La Jolla Cove is our personal favorite, with verdant grass that leads to craggy cliffs, but there’s so much more to do in this SoCal city. Wander the 15 (!) museums at the 1,200-acre Balboa Park , hike to the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , and feast on some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop (we love the steak, shrimp, avocado and chipotle taco).

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a reputation for being the Brooklyn of the West—which isn’t entirely unfounded, given its profusion of microbrews and macro-beards. Your first stop: Ned Ludd , where almost everything on the menu (local rabbit and roasted radishes, or chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan, for example) is cooked on a wood fire. Hike through the rainforest to feel the spray of the 627-foot waterfall at Multnomah Falls , just half an hour from downtown Portland. Leave time for a trip to peruse the two million-some volume at Powell’s City of Books , a local favorite on Burnside St.

Palm Springs, California

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor — a who’s who of showbiz has long found solace in Palm Springs. Today this desert oasis is the perfect mix of modern and kitschy which attracts a hip L.A. crowd. Spend an afternoon wandering the Uptown Design District, where eye-catching boutiques (we love the Midcentury housewares at Christopher Anthony ) are joined by retro-chic restaurants and bars. Bootlegger Tiki , Palm Canyon Drive’s mixology-centered newcomer, has a 12–2 a.m. happy hour, kitschy luau-themed décor, and hangover-worthy cocktails (we love the cheekily-named Mango Unchained.) If live music is what you seek, check out Melvyn’s , the storied supper club-style hangout once frequented by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

Shelter Island, New York

The 12-square-mile atoll sits between the tony North Fork and the Hamptons but feels a hushed world away (more than a third of the area is fiercely protected by the Nature Conservancy). Here, it’s all about unwinding, from the golden-sand beaches and hiking paths to farm fresh produce and sunset cocktails. The island’s newest place to bed down is Chequit Inn , with 37 shabby-chic rooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and complimentary breakfast. For dinner, don’t miss the Montauk pearl oysters and lobster pot pie at Vine Street Café (or pick up goodies to go at the food market out back).

Introduction

Welcome to this comprehensive guide on what to pack for a 2-night trip! Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a short business trip, or a mini vacation, it’s important to pack strategically to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience. Packing the right items will not only save you time and effort, but also ensure that you have everything you need during your trip.

In this article, we will cover all the essential items you should consider packing for a 2-night trip. From clothing and accessories to toiletries and personal care items, electronics and gadgets to travel documents and money, we’ve got you covered. We’ll even touch on entertainment and travel essentials, snacks and refreshments, as well as some miscellaneous items that can come in handy during your trip.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or new to the world of travel, this guide will serve as your go-to resource to help you pack efficiently and make the most of your 2-night trip. So let’s dive in and start packing!

Clothing and Accessories

Packing the right clothing and accessories is crucial for any trip, including a 2-night getaway. The key is to bring versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Here are some essentials to consider:

  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing: Pack clothing suitable for the destination’s climate and activities. Include items like t-shirts, jeans, shorts, or skirts, depending on your preferences and the weather forecast.
  • Undergarments and socks: Don’t forget to pack enough underwear and socks for each day of your trip. It’s always a good idea to have extras, just in case.
  • Sleepwear: Bring comfortable sleepwear, such as pajamas or loungewear, to ensure a good night’s rest.
  • Sweater or light jacket: Even if you’re traveling to a warm destination, it’s wise to pack a light sweater or jacket as some places can get chilly, especially in the evenings.
  • Shoes: Choose versatile and comfortable shoes that are suitable for the activities you have planned. Include a pair of walking shoes or sneakers for exploring, and sandals or dress shoes if needed.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget to pack accessories like sunglasses, a hat, or a scarf, depending on the weather and your personal style preferences.

Remember to pack your clothing in a way that maximizes space and minimizes wrinkles. Rolling your clothes or using packing cubes can help you stay organized and make the most of your luggage space.

Additionally, consider the specific activities or events you have planned for your trip. If you’re attending a formal event, make sure to pack appropriate attire. If you’re planning outdoor activities, bring along appropriate gear such as hiking boots or swimwear.

By packing a variety of clothing options and taking into account your planned activities, you’ll be well-prepared for your 2-night trip and ready to tackle any situation that may arise.

Toiletries and Personal Care

When it comes to toiletries and personal care items, it’s important to pack efficiently while still ensuring you have everything you need to stay fresh and comfortable during your 2-night trip. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste: Remember to pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste to maintain your oral hygiene.
  • Shampoo and conditioner: If you prefer using your own hair products, consider packing travel-sized shampoo and conditioner bottles.
  • Body wash or soap: Pack a small bottle of body wash or a bar of soap to keep yourself clean and refreshed.
  • Deodorant: Don’t forget to bring along your preferred deodorant to stay fresh throughout your trip.
  • Razor and shaving cream: If you need to shave during your trip, make sure to pack a razor and travel-sized shaving cream.
  • Hairbrush or comb: Keep your hair looking neat and tidy by packing a suitable hairbrush or comb.
  • Skincare essentials: Bring your usual skincare products, such as moisturizer, sunscreen, and any other items you regularly use to keep your skin healthy.
  • Makeup and personal grooming items: If you use makeup or have specific personal grooming items, pack them in a small makeup bag or toiletry case.
  • Menstrual products: If applicable, make sure to pack an adequate supply of menstrual products.

Remember to check travel restrictions on liquids and pack any necessary toiletries in travel-sized containers or buy travel-sized versions of your favorite products.

In addition to these essentials, consider any specific personal care items you may require, such as contact lenses, medication, or special hygiene products. It’s important to anticipate your personal needs and pack accordingly.

By carefully selecting and packing your toiletries and personal care items, you’ll be well-prepared to maintain your hygiene and feel refreshed throughout your 2-night trip.

Electronics and Gadgets

In today’s digital age, electronics and gadgets have become essential for many travelers. When packing for a 2-night trip, it’s important to bring along the right electronic devices and accessories to enhance your experience. Here are some items to consider:

  • Smartphone and charger: Your smartphone is a versatile tool that can be used for communication, navigation, entertainment, and more. Don’t forget to pack your charger as well.
  • Digital camera: If you’re a photography enthusiast or simply want to capture memories of your trip, consider bringing a digital camera and any necessary accessories like extra batteries or memory cards.
  • Laptop or tablet: If you need to work or stay connected during your trip, bringing a laptop or tablet can be beneficial. Remember to pack the necessary chargers and accessories.
  • Portable charger: To ensure your electronic devices stay powered throughout your trip, pack a portable charger. This will come in handy, especially if you’ll be out and about for extended periods without access to charging outlets.
  • Headphones: Whether you prefer listening to music, watching movies, or making hands-free calls, having a pair of headphones or earbuds is essential for a more enjoyable travel experience.
  • E-reader or tablet: If you’re an avid reader, consider bringing an e-reader or tablet to have a selection of books at your fingertips without taking up valuable space in your luggage.
  • Adapters and converters: If you’re traveling internationally, ensure you have the necessary power adapters and voltage converters to charge your devices in different countries.
  • Other gadgets: Depending on your preferences and needs, you may want to bring other gadgets like a portable speaker, fitness tracker, or travel-size electronics for entertainment.

While electronics and gadgets can greatly enhance your travel experience, it’s important to pack them selectively and considerately. Only bring items that you truly need or will significantly improve your trip. Be mindful of the weight and space limitations of your luggage as well.

Remember to keep your electronics secure and easily accessible during your trip. Consider using a protective case or bag to safeguard your devices from any potential damage.

By strategically packing your electronics and gadgets, you’ll be able to stay connected, capture memories, and enjoy entertainment during your 2-night trip.

Travel Documents and Money

When embarking on a 2-night trip, it’s crucial to ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents and money to facilitate a smooth journey. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Identification: Bring a valid form of identification such as a passport, driver’s license, or identification card. Make sure it is not expired and keep it in a secure place.
  • Travel itinerary: Print out or have a digital copy of your travel itinerary, including flight details, hotel reservations, and any other important information related to your trip.
  • Health insurance and vaccination cards: If you’re traveling to a foreign country, it’s advisable to carry your health insurance card and any required vaccination records.
  • Credit cards and cash: Bring a mix of credit cards and cash for your trip. It’s a good idea to have some local currency for immediate expenses and emergencies.
  • Travel insurance documents: If you have travel insurance, carry the necessary documents, including policy information and emergency contact numbers.
  • Emergency contact information: Write down or save important phone numbers, including emergency contacts, your accommodation, and any relevant embassy or consulate numbers.
  • Transportation tickets: If you’ve already booked transportation, such as flights or train tickets, have them readily accessible in your carry-on or digital wallet.
  • Copy of important documents: Make copies of your passport, identification, and other important documents. Keep them separate from the originals to have as backup in case of loss or theft.

It’s also a good idea to have a travel wallet or organizer to keep your travel documents and money organized and easily accessible. This will help streamline the check-in process at airports or hotels and ensure you have everything you need at hand.

Before your trip, double-check the entry requirements for your destination, including visa regulations and any additional documentation you may need. Ensure that your passports and other identification documents have sufficient validity for your trip.

By properly organizing and carrying your travel documents and money, you’ll have peace of mind and be well-prepared for any unexpected situations during your 2-night trip.

Medications and First Aid

When packing for a 2-night trip, it’s important to consider your health and well-being. Having essential medications and a basic first aid kit can make a big difference in ensuring a safe and comfortable journey. Here’s what you should include:

  • Prescription medications: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring an adequate supply for the duration of your trip. It’s advisable to carry them in their original packaging with labels intact.
  • Over-the-counter medications: Pack a small assortment of commonly used over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, antihistamines, or stomach remedies. These can come in handy for minor illnesses or discomforts.
  • First aid kit: Put together a basic first aid kit that includes items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, adhesive tape, and tweezers. This will allow you to address minor injuries or ailments during your trip.
  • Personal health products: Don’t forget to bring any personal health products you regularly use, such as contact lens solution, asthma inhalers, or allergy medication.
  • Medical information: Carry a list of your known allergies, medical conditions, and emergency contact information. This can be crucial in case of any unforeseen medical situations.

It’s also a good idea to check if any vaccinations or preventive medications are recommended for your destination. Consult with your healthcare provider well in advance to ensure you’re up to date on any necessary immunizations or medications.

When traveling with medications, keep them in your carry-on luggage to ensure easy access and prevent loss or damage. Be aware of any restrictions or regulations regarding medications in the countries you’re traveling to, especially for controlled substances.

Lastly, familiarize yourself with the location of nearby pharmacies or medical facilities at your destination, just in case you need to seek medical assistance during your 2-night trip.

By taking the necessary precautions and packing essential medications and first aid supplies, you can stay prepared and address any minor health concerns that may arise during your trip.

Entertainment and Travel Essentials

While the primary purpose of your 2-night trip may be relaxation or business, it’s essential to pack some entertainment and travel essentials to keep you occupied and comfortable during your journey. Here are some items to consider:

  • Books or e-books: Bring along a book or load up your e-reader with your favorite reads. They can be a great way to pass the time and unwind during your trip.
  • Music and podcasts: Create a playlist or download podcasts to enjoy during your journey. Whether you listen through headphones or play it in the car, it can be a source of entertainment and relaxation.
  • Travel-sized games: If you’re traveling with companions, consider packing travel-sized games like cards, travel chess, or portable board games. They can provide hours of fun and friendly competition.
  • Journal or notebook: Capture your thoughts, memories, or simply jot down any important information in a journal or notebook. It can also be a creative outlet while on the go.
  • Travel pillow and blanket: For added comfort during transportation, pack a travel pillow and a cozy blanket to make your journey more relaxing, especially for long flights or train rides.
  • Snorkel gear or sporting equipment: If your 2-night trip involves water activities or outdoor sports, bring along appropriate gear such as snorkels, fins, or lightweight sporting equipment.
  • Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is important, so remember to pack a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout your trip. It’s both convenient and environmentally friendly.
  • Travel adapter: If you’re traveling internationally, a travel adapter is an essential item to ensure you can charge your electronic devices.
  • Portable Bluetooth speaker: If you enjoy listening to music or podcasts with friends or family, a portable Bluetooth speaker can enhance your audio experience during your trip.

Keep in mind that the entertainment and travel essentials you choose should align with your preferences and the nature of your trip. Consider the activities you have planned and pack accordingly.

Remember to consider the dimension and weight of these items to ensure they fit comfortably in your luggage. It’s important to strike a balance between having enough entertainment options and not overpacking unnecessary items.

By including some entertainment and travel essentials in your packing list, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your 2-night trip with added comfort and entertainment options.

Snacks and Refreshments

Having snacks and refreshments on hand during your 2-night trip can be a lifesaver, especially when hunger strikes or you need a quick energy boost. Packing a variety of snacks and staying hydrated ensures that you have nourishment when needed. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Granola bars or protein bars: These compact and portable snacks are perfect for satisfying hunger in between meals or during activities.
  • Trail mix or nuts: A mix of dried fruits, nuts, and seeds provides a healthy and satisfying snack option. Plus, it’s easy to pack and doesn’t require refrigeration.
  • Fresh fruit: Choose fruits that are easy to transport and eat on the go, such as apples, bananas, or grapes. They provide natural hydration and vitamins.
  • Crackers and cheese: Pack some individually wrapped crackers and mini cheese portions for a savory snack option. They’re convenient and can help keep hunger at bay.
  • Snack-sized bags of pretzels or popcorn: These classic snacks are great for satisfying cravings and provide a crunchy texture to munch on.
  • Hydration is key: Remember to pack a refillable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout your trip. You can also bring along flavored drink mixes or electrolyte packets to add variety to your beverages.
  • Tea bags or instant coffee: If you’re a tea or coffee lover, pack a few of your favorite tea bags or individual servings of instant coffee. It’s a simple way to enjoy a hot beverage and save money on buying drinks.
  • Travel-sized condiments: To liven up your snacks or meals, consider packing travel-sized condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, or hot sauce. They can add flavor and variety to your snacks.

When packing snacks, be mindful of any dietary restrictions or allergies you may have, as well as the regulations about bringing food into your destination if you’re traveling internationally.

Having snacks and refreshments on hand not only keeps hunger at bay but also provides a sense of comfort and convenience, especially during long journeys or when you’re in a location with limited food options.

By packing a mix of snacks and staying hydrated, you’ll have the fuel you need to stay energized and enjoy your 2-night trip to the fullest.

Miscellaneous Items

When planning for a 2-night trip, it’s easy to focus on the essentials and forget about a few miscellaneous items that can come in handy during your journey. Here are some miscellaneous items worth considering:

  • Travel size laundry detergent: If you anticipate needing to do laundry during your trip, bring a small container of travel-sized laundry detergent. It will allow you to do a quick wash in your accommodation’s sink.
  • Reusable shopping bag: A compact and foldable reusable shopping bag can be useful for carrying souvenirs, groceries, or any unexpected items you accumulate during your trip.
  • Ziplock bags: These versatile bags are handy for storing snacks, keeping small items organized, or keeping wet or dirty clothes separate from the rest of your belongings.
  • Travel pillowcase: A travel-sized pillowcase can provide a clean and comfortable surface for resting your head, especially if you’re unsure about the cleanliness of the provided pillows at your accommodation.
  • Extra plastic bags: Having a few extra plastic bags on hand can be helpful for storing wet items, separating dirty clothes, or keeping your belongings organized.
  • Travel-sized sewing kit: A small sewing kit can be a lifesaver in case of any wardrobe malfunctions during your trip. It can help you quickly repair a loose thread or fix a minor clothing tear.
  • Reusable utensils: If you want to reduce waste or find yourself in need of utensils, consider packing a set of reusable utensils such as a fork, spoon, and a pair of chopsticks.
  • Travel lock: For added security, pack a travel lock to secure your luggage or lock the hotel room door when you’re inside.
  • Travel-sized umbrella: A compact umbrella can be a lifesaver if you encounter unexpected rain or strong sun during your trip.
  • Travel guidebook or maps: If you prefer the old-fashioned way of navigating or want more information about your destination, bring along a travel guidebook or printed maps.

While these miscellaneous items might not be essential for every trip, they can prove to be useful in different situations. Assess your specific needs and consider packing items that will enhance your comfort and convenience during your 2-night journey.

Remember, packing light and being mindful of baggage limitations is still important, so prioritize which miscellaneous items are most essential for your specific trip.

By including these miscellaneous items in your packing list, you’ll be prepared for various scenarios and ensure a more enjoyable and stress-free 2-night trip.

As you prepare for your upcoming 2-night trip, packing strategically is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. By considering the different categories of items outlined in this guide, you can make sure you have everything you need without overpacking.

Start with the basics like clothing and accessories, making sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing and versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Don’t forget essentials like toiletries and personal care items, and consider any specific medications or first aid supplies you may require.

Electronics and gadgets can make your trip more convenient and entertaining, so pack your essentials wisely. Remember to bring along important travel documents and money, and keep them organized and easily accessible throughout your journey.

Entertainment and travel essentials can enhance your experience, so think about bringing books, games, and other items that will keep you occupied and comfortable during downtime. And of course, don’t forget to pack snacks and refreshments to keep you fueled along the way.

Lastly, consider any miscellaneous items that can come in handy during your trip, such as travel-sized laundry detergent, reusable bags, or a travel lock. These small additions can make a big difference in your overall experience.

By carefully considering and packing these essential items, you’ll be well-prepared for your 2-night trip. Remember to double-check your packing list before you leave to ensure you haven’t missed anything crucial. With your bags packed and essentials ready, you can embark on your journey with confidence and excitement.

Now, go ahead and enjoy your 2-night adventure!

Table of Contents

Weekend trips seem like they should be the easiest ones to pack for. But they always end up being the hardest.

Weekends should be simple. The trip is short, the weather won’t vary much, and you probably know what you’ll be doing.

But packing light for a weekend trip can pose a challenge. We all tend to pack as much as we can fit, not just what we need. Whether you’re traveling for a weekend or a month, you’ll probably fill your backpack or suitcase. When you have the space, you start adding stuff you’ll never need, like an extra pair of shoes or a just-in-case outfit.

Your stuff will expand to fill your bag.

To combat this tendency, stick to a short weekend trip packing list and pack a small bag.

3-Day Weekend Packing List

Let’s start off with a quick checklist for a three-day, two-night weekend trip. The packing list below assumes that you leave on Friday, stay Friday and Saturday nights, then return home on Sunday.

For clothing, we’ve included your travel day (or in-flight) clothing in the packing list.

  • 1 pair of shoes
  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks (1-2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • Toiletry bag
  • Water bottle
  • Phone, charger , and earbuds or headphones
  • Book or Kindle

Consider at least one “nice” outfit depending on your plans. Dressing up—especially if you don’t have to—can make a nice dinner feel like a special occasion when you’re traveling.

Optional Add-Ons

  • Eye mask and ear plugs
  • Hat, scarf, and/or gloves for winter trips

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Travel Day Outfit

The outfit you wear to travel should be the bulkiest outfit of the trip, especially if you’re flying. Wear your biggest, heaviest clothes—jeans, sweater, boots, jacket—so that you can save space in your bag. If you’re too warm, you can always remove a layer after takeoff and store it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

If you’re flying, your travel outfit should include a  light jacket with zippered pockets. The pockets will provide extra space for packing things like your wallet, phone, chapstick, boarding pass, and other travel day essentials . The zippers will keep your stuff secured when you go through airport security.

Shoes are always a challenge when packing. It’s easy to convince yourself that you need a second pair, even for a three-day trip. Resist this temptation. Instead, pack one pair of shoes  you can wear all weekend. Your shoes must be comfortable enough for walking all day but nice enough to wear out to dinner.

In the winter, choose warm, comfortable boots. Sandals or sneakers work well in nicer weather. You can always add flip flops for the beach or pool if needed. Most will fit in your backpack’s water bottle pocket.

Electronics

Be careful not to overpack electronics. For such a short trip, you can leave your work computer at home. Since you’ll either be driving or taking a short flight, skip the tablet too. Your flight might be too short to watch a movie anyway.

A Kindle is my favorite in-flight entertainment for short trips. You’ll also have your phone and earbuds if you prefer to listen to music or a podcast.

When it comes to toiletries, take only the essentials. If you can live without it or survive with a different brand for a day or two, leave it at home.

Choose a hotel or an Airbnb that provides basics so that you don’t have to bring soap or shampoo.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Contact solution, if needed
  • Basic makeup, if needed
  • Soap, shampoo, and conditioner (only if not provided by your accommodation)

Consider if you can pool resources and share the packing burden with your travel companions. Do you each need to bring your own bottle of sunscreen or can one person bring a bottle for everyone to share?

If you forget anything, just grab a cheap option at your destination. You can bring home any leftovers so that you aren’t being wasteful.

Long Weekend Packing List

If you’re staying over Sunday night and heading home on Monday, use this list instead.

  • 4 sets of underwear
  • 4 pairs of socks (2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
  • Phone, charger, and earbuds or headphones

Wedding Weekend Packing List

Weddings may require packing a bit more.

You’ll need an extra pair of shoes and one or two extra outfits so that you’re always dressed appropriately. In addition to dress clothes for the wedding, consider what you’ll need for the rehearsal dinner or Sunday morning activities if either will be part of the festivities.

  • 2 pairs of shoes (1 pair for the wedding, 1 pair for everything else)
  • 5 outfits (1 casual outfit for each day plus the wedding and rehearsal dinner)
  • 4 pairs of socks (3 casual, 1 dress)

Best Weekend Backpack

We recommend packing a bag that’s made for travel—not just the old duffel at the back of your closet—especially if you’re flying. You’ll need a bag that’s optimized for packing , getting through security, and being accessible in-flight. Depending on how and what you’re packing, we recommend two options.

Travel Water Bottle

Why You Should Pack Last Minute

Packing last minute sounds sacrilegious, especially for Type A travelers. But hear me out.

You don’t need to bring much for a weekend getaway, so you won’t need much planning or packing time.

If you wait until the night before your trip to pack, you can be even more efficient. Check the weather last minute so that you know it won’t change (much). By then, you’ll also know your weekend plans and can pack and dress accordingly.

No need to worry about any “just in case” stuff.

Pack a small backpack and limit yourself to one outfit (or less) per day.

Have a two-day trip coming up and aren't sure what exactly to pack? You don't want to over-pack and bring too many things that you wouldn't need. On the other hand, you don’t want to under-pack and fail to bring your essentials. No matter how or why you are traveling, knowing what to pack and what to leave at home will make your trip run as smoothly as possible.

Packing List

2 night trip

Packing Clothing and Accessories

Step 1 Pack only the clothes you need.

  • 2 shirts/blouses
  • 2 trousers/jeans/skirts/shorts
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 3 pairs of socks/pantyhose

Step 2 Choose clothes you can wear for multiple purposes or events.

  • A white shirt or blouse
  • Black, brown, or gray trousers/skirt
  • Black, brown, or gray sandals
  • Black athletic shoes, when worn with trousers

Step 3 Limit your shoes.

  • Wedding band/engagement ring
  • Simple gold or silver necklace
  • Stud earrings

Packing Toiletries

Step 1 Decide what you can leave at home.

  • If you’re staying with friends or relatives, ask what they have on hand and if they’re willing to share. As a friendly gesture, offer to repay them with a meal, movie ticket, gift card, etc.

Step 2 Buy travel sizes.

  • Colored lip gloss
  • Powdered foundation
  • Eyeliner/eyeshadow combo stick

Avoiding Overpacking

Step 1 Check the weather at your destination.

  • Pack a small umbrella if the forecast calls for rain. If an unexpected deluge happens at a time that you absolutely must be outside, ask your host or front desk at the hotel if you can borrow a larger umbrella.

Step 2 Decide on your luggage.

  • Roll clothes that won’t wrinkle. These are usually tee-shirts, jeans, and casual clothes made of cotton. Place them in the bottom of your bag.
  • Fold clothes that can wrinkle. This includes cotton dress shirts and anything made of silk or satin. Place them on top of rolled items.
  • Fold longer articles in half. This includes trousers and long skirts. To create even layers, drape the top of the second article on top of the bottom of the first. [4] X Research source
  • Make use of spaces that remain. Look for smaller spaces between layers and between articles of clothing. Tuck socks, underwear, and chargers in these spaces.

Step 3 Maximize your laptop bag.

About This Article

Angela Rice

To pack for a 2-day trip, you’ll want to make sure you have all your essentials without overpacking. Pick a smaller piece of luggage, such as a backpack, duffel bag, or a small suitcase. Check the weather of your destination before packing so you only bring the clothes you need. You should also make a list of the activities you’re doing to better plan. For instance, if you’re going sightseeing one day and a party the next, you’ll probably just need 1 casual outfit, 1 dressier outfit, 2 pairs of shoes, underwear, pajamas, and socks. Besides clothes, you’ll want to bring travel-size containers of toiletries, like toothpaste, deodorant, and soap. Or, if you’re staying somewhere where toiletries will be provided, consider leaving these items at home to save space. If you wear makeup, only bring what you really need and plan to use. Your perfect new york itinerary for a weekend.

Image of author Steffen

Looking to see all the sights for your first-ever weekend in NYC? We’ve got you covered with a 2-day itinerary designed to help you make the most of your time. I know from experience that planning a weekend in New York City isn’t easy! You’re probably asking yourself a thousand questions, like what museums should you visit? Where should you eat? What’s on your “must see” list? What places are okay to save for your next visit?

  • 3 Days in New York

New York City is by far my favorite city in the world. I have visited NYC more than 20 times. I’ve taken almost every tour and tried every sightseeing pass. And I’ve made a few mistakes along the way (12-hour days + brand new shoes don’t mix!). With that experience, I’m going to share with you exactly what to see in New York in 2 days. A weekend is the perfect amount of time to get to know New York. Honestly, I’m excited for you! I’ll never forget my first trip to New York City, and I hope that with this 2-day New York City itinerary, you’ll get to make your own unforgettable New York memories, too.

Table of Contents

NYC Itinerary: Day One

Day 1 of your NYC 2-day itinerary is all about Manhattan. It includes Central Park, the High Line, Times Square, and much, much more.

In a few areas, I include options, like museums to visit or tours you can add on. These activities can add more time onto your itinerary, so depending on your energy levels (or if you’re traveling with kids), it may make sense to adjust other areas of the schedule. Given that you’ve got a fun-filled day ahead of you, it’s important to make sure you eat well throughout. We’ve included recommendations for lunch at Hudson Yards and dinner when you get to Madison Square Park. These are just suggestions, though!

One of New York’s many joys is discovering your favorite food spots hidden throughout the city, so if something catches your eye or you’re feeling a little grumble in your stomach, just go for it.

The Perfect First Morning in NYC

Cental_Park_Vogelperspektive

01 Start Your Day in Central Park!

Your time in New York starts with one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions: Central Park.

Known for its famous ice skating rink, its baseball fields, its running track, and its endlessly looping trails, Central Park is worthy of hours of exploration.

Since we’re kickstarting our NYC weekend itinerary, we’ll need to focus on the highlights for this trip. Our favorites include Bethesda Terrace , a large plaza and fountain that are often filled with performers, and Bow Bridge , a serene spot to take in the park, the city, and maybe snap a selfie.

Choose Between Two of The Best Museums!

As a note: New York may be one of the best cities in the world for museums. In fact, we’ve outlined all of our favorite New York museums here. With your 2-day NYC itinerary, however, we know you don’t have time to visit them all, so we’re recommending two of the best here.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

02 Option A: Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Met for short, deserves its place as one of the most famous art museums in the world. Its collection spans ancient times to contemporary collections, and includes Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Asian, European, and Modern Art.

Museum of Modern Art MoMA in NYC

03 Option B: Museum of Modern Art

Hands down one of the most creative, compelling museums in New York, the Museum of Modern Art is a showstopper. With impressive permanent collections and ever-evolving exhibitions, as well as a can’t-miss gift shop, the MoMA is well worth your time.

things_to_do_midtown_manhattan_200318140126026

04 Stroll Down Millionaire's Row

There may be no city in the world that does glitz and glamor quite like New York.

One of the places they do it best? 5th Avenue.

Also known as Millionaire’s Row, this is both New York’s most expensive shopping street and some of the world’s most costly retail spaces. Some of the famous names that line 5th Avenue that you may have heard of: Saks 5th Avenue, Apple, Prada, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tiffany, Bottega Veneta, Giorgio Armani, Versace, and so many more.

Even if you don’t want to go on a shopping spree, just strolling by these stores is an eye-opening way to start your New York adventure.

Top of the Rock

05 Visit the Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center, known also as 30 Rock, is one of the cultural centers of New York.

If you’ve wanted to visit Radio City Music Hall, NBC Studios, or you’re visiting during Christmas and you want to see the big tree, Rockefeller Center is the place to be. Or, if you’re fans of the NBC sitcom 30 Rock, you definitely need to swing by!

An absolute must during the winter season, Rockefeller Center has plenty to offer all year round, too, from seeing live tapings of shows to going to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck to soak up the Midtown Manhattan views.

You can find out more about Rockefeller Center at their official website.

210203111138001_St_Patricks_Cathedral_New_York_Midtown

06 Marvel at St. Patrick's Cathedral

New York City has a number of captivating churches. On this 2-day NYC itinerary, you’re going straight to the most impressive one: St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Located on 5th Avenue right alongside some of the most well-known brands in the world, this landmark church has been drawing attention since construction finished in 1879.

Starting with its size, the St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a sight to behold as it takes up 50th and 51st streets and 5th and Madison Avenues. It’s adorned with bronze doors, Neo-Gothic architecture, thousands of stained glass windows, and twenty altars (two of which were designed by Tiffany & Co.!).

For more on the history of this Catholic cathedral in Manhattan, visit their official website .

Grand_Central_Terminal_NYC_170614090305005

07 Visit The Exciting Grand Central Terminal

While you may visit a lot of subway and train stations while you’re in New York, there’s no terminal quite like Grand Central Terminal in Grand Central Station.

Welcoming 750,000 visitors every day, Grand Central Station is the second most popular spot in NYC (Times Square nabs the number one slot). Yes, trains and subways connect through the Grand Central 42 St. stop, but that alone doesn’t explain the sheer numbers.

What draws visitors to The Terminal is what makes it a National Historic Landmark: it is simply stunning. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style with sweeping ceilings and ornate touches, Grand Central Terminal is a beautiful home to stores, restaurants, and more.

Plus, if you happen to be visiting New York during the holidays, Grand Central Station is a must-visit thanks to its Holiday Fair and seasonal wreaths, garland, and festive lighting.

For more about the market, dining concourse, and shops, visit Grand Central Terminal’s official website .

The Perfect First Afternoon in NYC

Bryant_Park_180508105745002

01 Soak Up Some Greenery in Bryant Park

When you’ve got a day filled with skyscrapers and historic buildings to enjoy, it’s important to take time to soak up the greenery, too. While Bryant Park may be small, it is one of the most loved by New Yorkers. Located by the esteemed New York Public Library between 40th and 42nd Streets and Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan, this important park is often called Manhattan’s Town Square.

Winter activities include ice skating, holiday shopping, iceless curling, and a tree lighting show, and summertime fun includes sunbathing, picnicking, and movie watching.

new_york_public_library_new_york_public_library_180508105745004

02 Visit The Impressive New York Public Library

You may not be able to fit too much book-reading into this 2-day NYC itinerary, but that’s no reason not to visit the impressive New York Public Library. As the second-largest public library in the U.S. (the Library of Congress down in D.C. takes 1st place), the NYPL has over 50 million items across 92 locations. Once you get past the sheer scale of the items they’re taking care of, let yourself be won over by the architecture.

Done in the same Beaux-Arts style as Grand Central Terminal, it features marble arches, a grand staircase, and plenty of art and murals. Just be sure to keep your voice down while you’re wandering around it because people do use it for reading and studying!

Spend Some Time at The Remarkable Hudson Yards

From the classic institution, you’ll wander past Times Square (don’t worry, you’ll be back – we’re saving it for that just-right moment!) to Hudson Yards, a modern development that’s seriously impressive.

Known to locals for being the biggest real estate development deal in U.S. history, it’s become an attraction all its own with 14 acres of public space, gardens, and a park, as well as a hotel, mall, and the eye-catching The Vessel, a bronze sculpture that stands 15 stories tall. With its mix of stairs, flights, and landings, there’s an Instagram-worthy spot just waiting for you. To make the most of your time, you’ll have two options to choose from:

Edge_Hudson_Yards_200311150024031

03 Option A: The Edge

Take advantage of one of New York’s best views at the Edge, the world’s highest outdoor observation deck. At over 1,100’ high and extending 65’ feet into the air, the Edge offers unparalleled views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

190423143257006_the_Shed_Hudson_Yards

04 Option B: The Shed

The Shed is both Hudson Yards’ art venue, featuring dance, concerts, plays, and more, as well as home to Cedric’s at The Shed, a full-service restaurant. If there’s an exhibition you’re interested in seeing , this could be worth a visit!

High_Line_New_York_171012162730002_1600x960

05 Wander Above The Streets at The High Line

And now, it’s time for one of the absolute gems of New York: the High Line. Built on a historic rail line that carves through the city, the High Line is part public park, part gardens, part experience. The perspectives that it gives you of the city, the pockets of quietness you’ll find, and the smiles you’ll see from the people discovering this new side of New York combine for a remarkable experience. It’s more than just being above the streets and away from the traffic. Walking the High Line lets you feel more connected to the built city in a way few other cities around the world can pull off.

Little Island New York

06 Visit Little Island, a Park on The Hudson River

Most of the parks we’ll visit on your NYC 2-day itinerary are tucked in and around towering, magnificent buildings. What makes Little Island so unique is that it’s a park that popped up just on the Hudson River.

Made from the remains of Pier 54, this floating park is indeed little – you can walk it in just 15 minutes – but that only adds to its charm. Filled with green spaces that change to reflect the seasons, rolling hills, and well-designed pathways, this is a much-needed natural pause in the middle of a mighty, industrial city.

191120191816006_Artichoke_Basille_s_Pizza

07 Try a Delicious Slice of Pizza in Greenwich Village

Known more formally as Greenwich Village, the Village is one of New York’s most recognizable cultural spots. Though these tree-lined streets are now home to cafés, restaurants, and boutiques, this was the beating heart of the ‘60s counterculture movement. Filled with student energy courtesy of the adjacent New York University and the always-bustling Washington Square Park, the Village feels like New York. There are plenty of good eats to be had here, too. If you’ve been holding out for a New York slice, now’s the time to dig in! For my money, Artichoke Basille’s Pizza is one of the best in the city.

Washington_Square_Park_160914155957003

08 Drop by Energetic Washington Square Park

What makes Washington Square Park such a unique place to visit during a New York City weekend is how energetic the park is. More than just a public park known for its iconic arch and fountain, it’s a gathering place for people from Greenwich Village, the students from NYU, it’s a performance space for amateurs and professionals alike, it’s a battle ground for chess players of all ages, and so much more. While it may be easier to stop and stay a while during the warmer summer months, any visit to the park is a memorable one.

210203114738002_Union_Square_New_York

09 Come to Union Square

As you arrive at Union Square, you’re being welcomed fully back into the bustling, beating heart of New York City. Union Square, located at 14th Street and 5th Avenue, is one of the city’s more recognizable centers.

The park itself is a small oasis of green surrounded by buildings where you’ll find a bustling produce market four days a week. Nearby, one of the city’s most famous bookstores, The Strand, offers a collection of books that could span 18 miles. Plus, a collection of taverns, bars, and bakeries could tempt you with a mid-afternoon drink or dessert, depending on what you’re in the mood for.

Bild1

10 Come to Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park

Time for a quick stroll up Broadway to get to Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building. The Flatiron, so-named because it looks like something you’d iron your clothes with, is an iconic 1902 building from architect Daniel Burnham. It’s one of my favorite spots to take an “only in New York” photo!

From there, you’ll head to Madison Square Park and you’ll have a choice to make. If you’ve ever heard of Shake Shack, the delicious burger chain with some of the best milkshakes (and I’ve tasted a lot of milkshakes!), then you’ve got to pay homage to the very first Shake Shack that opened here in Madison Square Park. If you’re in the mood for an Italian meal in one of the most interesting markets in New York, make sure to stop by the Eataly Food Market for a bite.

Empire State Building

11 A New York City Must-See: The Empire State Building

We’ve saved one of the best moments of your weekend NYC itinerary for the evening: the Empire State Building. Even from the street level, the Empire State Building has a magnetic presence. You’ve undoubtedly seen it during the day from different vantage points throughout the city. Now, you’re here at the base of this 102-story Art Deco beauty.

Depending on your schedule, you may decide to opt out of heading to the observation decks. However, if you have the time, we highly recommend it. From learning about the history of its construction and the city around it to the expansive views that can include up to five other states, this is a terrific way to end your day in New York.

Times_Square_New_York_161004125754022

12 End Your First Day Surrounded by Colorful Lights at Times Square

There’s no place like Times Square. Always filled with energy, Times Square is New York. The iconic filming spot for countless movies and TV shows, the always-on billboards, and the sight of the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, it all comes together at Times Square.

With over 330,000 visitors each day, Times Square is an energizing way to cap the beginning of your New York adventure. From here, the night is yours. If you’ve been hoping to see a Broadway show, you’re now only blocks away from the heart of it! Just head north and you’ll be at your theater in a few minutes.

Soak up One Last View of NYC

If you want to soak up one last view of NYC, we’ve got two fun options laid out for you below.

Summit One Vanderbilt Observation Deck

13 Option A: Summit One Vanderbilt (best observation deck in NYC)

While it’s hard to go wrong with observation decks in New York, Summit One Vanderbilt’s is the best one. Opened in 2021, this is the first observation deck on the East Side of Manhattan, meaning it offers remarkable views of the East River, the Chrysler Building, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. Plus, if you manage to make it in time for sunset, you will not regret it!

190111215815001_Refinery_rooftop_bar

14 Option B: The Refinery Rooftop

Another great way to wind down after your action-packed first day in New York is with the Refinery Rooftop, a bar in Midtown Manhattan.

With great views and even better cocktails, you’ll want to grab reservations at this popular evening spot – just in case!

Check out the menu and make your reservations at the Refinery Rooftop here .

NYC Itinerary: Day Two

Let’s get started on Day 2 of your 2-day NYC itinerary! You’ll start today in Manhattan before setting off for some adventures on Ellis Island and Brooklyn before returning to finish the day soaking up the city.

Even more than Day 1, today you’ll find tempting treats at nearly every stop of your journey. Our advice for Day 2: read through the guide once and see what sounds good to you (choosing between a SoHo brunch and a delicious meal in Little Italy is never easy!) and make some notes.

Then when you’re walking around, you’ll have a better idea of whether to give into temptation – or to hold out a little longer!

Day 2 starts with one of our favorite spots in New York: SoHo!

SoHo, or South of Houston (pronounced How-ston, not Hue-ston), is filled with visual treats good eats, and great shopping.

Start your day off with a breakfast at either 12 Chairs (a fusion of Middle East cuisine and breakfast classics) or Banter NYC (a healthy brunch choice). From there, keep your eyes peeled for both the permanent street art and the more temporary sort.

Even if you’re not big on shopping, looking into some of SoHo’s shops is an experience in and of itself. With cast-iron buildings, cobblestone streets, and brick walls, it’s worth poking around.

For a taste of New York how it used to be, you’ve got to spend some time in Little Italy!

Thanks to its roots of Italian immigrants from Sicily and Naples coming in the 1880s, this area around Mulberry Street became one of the areas most tied to the idea of New York.

While there’s plenty of history and culture still in the air, we’d be misleading you if we didn’t tell you the best thing to do here was to eat!

Start hungry at standouts like Emilio’s Ballato, Parm, Rubirosa, and Lombardi’s. Then make sure you save room for some sweets, like gelato at La Bella Ferrara or a cannoli at Caffe Palermo.

02 Take a Stroll Around Tribeca

With its fascinating blend of centuries of history and modern pop culture, a stroll through the Tribeca neighborhood is always a good time.

The history includes beautifully preserved Federal Style townhomes that date back to the 1820s and plenty of Civil War-era architecture. Those classic constructions make the backdrop for one of the most popular comedies of all time, Ghostbusters (1984), which visitors can celebrate at the fire station used for filming at 14 North Moore Street.

It’s also one of the best areas in NYC to go shopping, with a handful of timeless used book stores, great vintage shops, and boutiques. If you somehow made it through Little Italy without digging in, then you’ll definitely find a great bite to eat here.

03 Take Some Time at 9/11 Memorial & Museum

One of the most important stops you’ll make during this NYC 2-day itinerary is to the 9/11 National Memorial .

This museum is located next to the World Trade Center and designed to honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as the bombing on February 26, 1993. It is also a moving tribute to those who risked their lives to save others, as well as the support that New Yorkers showed to each other in the difficult times that followed.

Given the more serious nature of this stop, I encourage you to take your time moving through it. Visitors often share that they spend between 30 minutes and two hours making their way through the memorials.

04 Enjoy a Breathtaking View From One World Observatory

One World Observatory offers a truly unmatched view of New York. With 360° views from over 100 stories up, there is no higher building in New York from which to look out over the city.

Designed as the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex, One World Trade Center is more than just an interesting place to visit, it’s a powerful reminder of the history of the World Trade Center.

It is also impressive, standing as the tallest building in the United States – and the seventh-tallest in the world. Almost as stunning as the view? The elevator ride up! It’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it fast, shooting you up 102 stories in just 47 seconds.

For more information about the One World Observatory, including information about tickets, head to our complete guide .

Make The Most of Your Second Afternoon

Statue of Liberty Cruise

01 Say Hello to Lady Liberty

More than just a fascinating stop on any first-time visit to New York, the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island are an essential part of American history.

For more than 30 years in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Ellis Island was referred to as the “Island of Hope” because it represented the chance for immigrants to start a new life in America. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French that was dedicated in 1886, is located on Liberty Island and became a symbol of freedom and democracy.

Taking the ferry out to Ellis Island and being able to spend time learning about and exploring the Statue of Liberty may be one of the most powerful moments of your 2-day NYC trip.

The ferry itself only takes about 15 minutes to arrive at Ellis Island, and getting to the top of the Statue of Liberty only takes about 20 minutes.

02 Visit The World's Most Famous Financial District

Home of New York’s financial center – and known the world over – Wall Street makes for one of the more interesting stops for any 2-day NYC itinerary.

For fun photo opportunities, you’ll definitely need to head to the Charging Bull, the bronze statue on Broadway just north of Bowling Green.

As for the New York Stock Exchange, you’d need to get here by 9:30am on a weekday to hear the opening bell. Otherwise, the historic building is still well worth a photo!

You can also pay respects at the 9/11 Memorial that rests where the former Twin Towers used to stand. This open air plaza is a powerful tribute to those that lost their lives, and the memorials can be a surprisingly quiet place even in such a busy part of the city.

03 Take Some Classic NYC Pictures on Brooklyn Bridge

Get your cameras ready, because walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is going to set you up for some of the most classic NYC photos.

Built between 1869 and 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge is NYC’s oldest suspension bridge. From this majestic 5,989’ bridge you’ll have the chance to see Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, the East River, Governors Island, Staten Island, New Jersey, and your new friend, the Statue of Liberty! For both locals and visitors alike, the Brooklyn Bridge is a popular spot. Because of that, you’ll want to be courteous of other people, especially if you’re trying to catch the perfect selfie angle.

If you’re taking your time and snapping pictures along the way, give yourself about an hour to finish the walk. If you’re planning to power through it and just take a few photos, you can expect to cross in 25 minutes or so.

04 Enjoy Amazing Views of The Manhattan Skyline From Brooklyn Bridge Park

After finishing your walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, it’s time to start exploring Brooklyn!

This 85-acre sustainable park is situated right along Brooklyn’s East River waterfront. In addition to having spectacular, unobstructed views of Manhattan (among other things, you can see the beautiful World Trade Center as part of the skyline), the Brooklyn Bridge Park has plenty of fun, free activities. With an impressive nine lawns, the park is the ideal spot for a quick break during an adventure-packed two days in New York.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is also one of the best places to see sculptures and art outdoors in New York, with displays and installations that are refreshed regularly.

For more on what you can do while you’re at the park, including upcoming events, visit their official website .

05 Take a Picture of The Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO

When you’re spending 2 days in New York, you have to make sure you seize the moment to get the best photos possible.

One of the most iconic spots? This DUMBO Manhattan Bridge view you find on Washington Street. Already one of the most eye-catching bridges in New York, the Manhattan Bridge connects Downtown Brooklyn with Lower Manhattan.

What makes this spot so unique is its combination of old, new, and New York. You’ve got trees poking out from the sides of red brick buildings, cute cobblestone streets, and the modernity of the Manhattan Bridge in the background. Not only that, you should also be able to see the Empire State Building, too!

FYI – Wondering what DUMBO means? No, there’s no connection with the animated Disney movie! It’s an acronym that stands for Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass!

06 Explore Some of The Best Restaurants at Time Out Market

One of the many joys of visiting New York is experiencing some of the world’s best restaurants all throughout the city. When you’re planning a weekend itinerary for New York, however, you’ve got to head straight for the Time Out Market.

This mouthwatering marketplace features more than 20 unique food concepts with two floors of restaurants and bars.

Once you’ve eaten your fill downstairs, be sure to check out the Roof Top Bar. It’s quite a New York moment to be sipping on one of their Signature Cocktails as you take in the Manhattan skyline!

Get ready to visit Brooklyn’s Time Out Market by checking the full list of dining and drinking options here.

07 Take The NYC Ferry Back to Manhattan

From Brooklyn, it’s time to make our way back to Manhattan – and we’re going to do it in style on the NYC Ferry.

The ferry, which only takes about 10 minutes to cover the 2 miles between the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Wall Street / Pier 11 Landing, is more than just a convenient option. From this New York City expert, this actually has one of the best views of the New York skyline you can get.

While the views of New York from the Empire State Building and 30 Rockefeller Center are impressive, seeing the city grow in size as you approach it on a ferry is one of our favorite parts of this 2-day NYC itinerary. Make sure your cameras are ready, because with just 10 minutes, you’ll have to get your pictures quickly!

08 Let The Day End in The Lower East Side

We wrap up your whirlwind 2-day NYC itinerary with an evening in the Lower East Side, or the LES (as the locals call it).

Given that it’s a popular destination for drinks, dinner, and music, it’s only fitting you spend your last evening in New York here. From a neighborhood that gets much of its character from the vibrant blend of cultures – including Jewish, Russian, Ukrainian, Italian, and Irish – the Lower East Side is a wonderful blend.

Enjoy a taste of one of the most famous Jewish delis in town by grabbing a table at Katz’s Delicatessen . To get the full experience, we recommend a pastrami on rye with mustard, juicy (meaning… fatty).

After dinner, head up to the cloudM Rooftop bar , enjoy a finely crafted cocktail, and sit back as you take in the beauty of the sunset and evening of New York.

10 Tips for Visiting NYC for First Time

Your first visit to NYC is going to be unforgettable, there’s no doubt about that.

Make sure it’s unforgettable for all the right reasons by following these 10 tips, and your NYC weekend will go as smoothly as possible.

  • Wear comfortable clothing – To make the most of a 2-day NYC itinerary, you’ll need to be on the move. While you may want to dress your best for the photos, make sure that you’ve got shoes that you can use for miles of walking and layers of clothes to stay comfortable.
  • Charge your phone – From taking videos of the Statue of Liberty to scanning your digital tickets, your phone is going to get a workout while you follow this NYC weekend itinerary. Charge it before you go and keep it in airplane mode when you’re not expecting calls, and you’ll be in great shape.
  • Use the subway – One thing I’ve learned over my years of visiting NYC: New York City is almost *too* walkable! Don’t forget to save your legs and take advantage of the easy-to-use public transportation system in New York.
  • Keep your head up – For one, there’s so much amazing architecture in New York City that you can appreciate when you’re alert to your surroundings. Another, more practical reason: there are a lot of people walking around, and you’ll need to stay active to avoid running into them.
  • Grab a sightseeing pass – As a way of saving time and money for your weekend NYC trip, a NYC sightseeing pass is a great option. We share our tips for picking the best NYC sightseeing pass for your trip here .
  • Stay in a hotel near transportation – New York City is one of the easiest big cities in the world to get around. The only trick? Making sure you’re near public transportation. With some hotels, you might have a great view or a great rate, but they could leave you spending more time getting to where you want to go.
  • Plan your eating – There’s no shortage of delicious eats in New York City. When you’re coming for your first trip, do yourself a favor and reserve a restaurant or two. This will make sure that even if you get off your itinerary a little bit, you’ll still leave your trip having checked off some boxes.
  • Stop by a park – With museums, buildings, and sports being some of NYC’s major draws, it can be easy to overlook some of the city’s true gems: its parks! Make sure to save some time to stop by Central Park, Prospect Park, Washington Square Park, and others to see a greener side of the city.
  • Don’t rent a car – First of all, the public transportation is so good that you don’t need a car to get anywhere you want to go. Second, having to deal with parking will take away from the fun of your weekend. From difficult-to-find spots to overnight parking charges, save yourself the stress and enjoy a car-free weekend in NYC.
  • Eat pizza and bagels – We save our best tip for last. Make sure to start one of your mornings with a bagel or egg sandwich, and include a stop for a New York slice during the day.

Easy Ways To Get Around NYC In A Weekend

If you’re planning a 2-day weekend itinerary for NYC, then you’ll need to know the best ways to get around the city. Some brave travelers want to spend the whole weekend walking, and while we commend them, our legs and feet need a break every once in a while!

Here are our four favorite ways of getting around NYC for the weekend:

  • NYC By Subways and Buses – New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates throughout all five of NYC’s boroughs, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Grab a MetroCard from any of the automated machines and getting around the city will be easy!
  • NYC by Taxi or Rideshare – With the availability of taxis and rideshares, you really have no reason to rent a car while you’re in NYC. New York’s iconic yellow taxis can be hailed from the street or requested through apps like Curb. You can also use your favorite ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft.
  • NYC by Bike – When the weather is decent, biking around New York City can be one of the fastest and most enjoyable modes of transportation. Whether you rent a bike for your full stay or take advantage of Citi Bike, NYC’s bike-sharing system, it’s a wonderful way to see the city.
  • Hop-on, Hop-off Bus – For a way of getting around NYC that’s geared toward your itinerary, a Hop-on Hop-off NYC Bus could be your best bet. Cheaper than taking the taxi to each stop, better suited to any weather, and with a better view than the metro, these buses are ideal for tourists planning a 2-day NYC itinerary.

Read this before booking your trip

A trip to the San Blas Islands is most likely very different to your usual vacation. All operations in San Blas are by law 100% owned and operated by local Kuna people , foreign investments are banned and foreigners/Panamanians are not allowed to conduct any business in San Blas. Most of the cabins are run by large families and provide income for a very large number of people. Many of the operators or employees have lived their entire life in San Blas, some never left the Comarca and most have never traveled to another country or stayed in a hotel. Kuna people have for hundreds of years lived a very simple and basic life consisting mainly of fishing and hunting. Tourism is fairly new and only very few have had real experience in the hospitality sector.

At the same time, the islands are very remote and difficult to reach. Everything that the islands themselves cannot provide (building material, gasoline for the boats, food,…) needs to be sourced in Panama City and sent for a high surcharge in a 4WD/SUV to the dock of Carti. From here, it is then redistributed via boats and again for a fee to smaller sellers and cabins. The islands are not provided with any infrastructure (electricity or running water) and locals live a simple life in tune with nature.

As you can imagine, great effort is required to provide a basic service to tourists and the locals do it to the best of their knowledge. As such, we kindly ask you to leave your mainland expectations behind and be open and try not to compare the $-value of a night in San Blas with a night in other parts of Panama. The simplicity of the cabins reflect a mix of the basic traditional lifestyle and the expensive sourcing for material with external financing being not allowed. Similarly, meals reflect local food patterns (fish/sea food with rice) with limited access and the attempt to adapt to foreign tastes with a bit of sides and salads. Drinking water needs to be imported from the City and is a luxury to most locals. Providing electricity and fresh water requires great effort and usage times might be restricted. Bed linens are washed by hand in the river on the mainland or sent to Panama City. There is no communal trash collection or recycling system in place. Only few locals speak English and some don’t even speak Spanish.

Nevertheless, we work closely with cabin owners to ensure that you will receive a great service, experience clean and functioning facilities and that your stay will be a remarkable one!

With this in mind, be ready to jump into your island adventure! Once on the island, you’ll most likely find that in such a beautiful setting, most modern-day luxuries are not needed and that there is a point to the simple and relaxing life that the Kuna people live 😊

What should I pack?

You’ll be spending an entire day out on the ocean and in the sun so we highly recommend dressing accordingly!

Please bring mandatory:

  • Passport : mandatory, it will be checked upon entering the Comarca of Kuna Yala (San Blas)
  • Sufficient cash: in US Dollars to pay for the trip in cash, to buy drinks, snacks, souvenirs on the island (small bills of 1 USD and 5 USD highly recommended) – Credit cards are not accepted and there is no ATM in San Blas

Additionally, we recommend:

  • Sun protection: for the island and the boat ride (sun blocker, hat, T-shirt with sleeves, towel)
  • Water to drink: Water/soft drinks are not included in the package, please bring sufficient or purchase on the island
  • Swimming gear
  • Sandals, flip flops
  • Wetbag or plastic bag for your valuables in case of a wet boat ride or rain
  • Flash light
  • Clothes (to change if you get wet on the boat ride + it might get chilly/windy at night)
  • Snorkeling equipment

Please wrap sensitive items and put them in a waterproof bag as the boat ride to and between islands might get bumpy and wet at times. Have your passport and cash with you during the car ride and ready to present when entering the Comarca of San Blas (passport check + payment of the governmental entrance fee).

Which currency is most widely accepted on this tour?

San Blas is cash-only, there are no ATMs or card payments in San Blas. Please bring sufficient cash (US Dollars), preferably in bills of $1 or $5 for paying for snacks, water, taxes etc. since locals rarely have sufficient change.

Why is there a governmental fee to enter San Blas?

All visitors to the Comarca Kuna Yala, and thus to the San Blas islands, have to pay a fee upon entering. For this purpose, there are inspection points at all entrance points to Kuna Yala, such as along the only road, all ports and all airports. This fee is used to protect the rich biodiversity of the Kuna Yala rainforests.

It is $20 for foreigners and $5 for nationals and residents.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel up to 48h before the tour starting date with full refund of the entire trip price. After the 48 hours, the deposit cannot be returned.

Can I drive to San Blas myself?

San Blas cannot be reached via public transport and entrance to the area is strictly controlled by the local government. A limited number of independent drivers are certified to bring tourists to the San Blas islands in SUV/4WD as sort of chartered taxis at a fixed price. It is currently NOT possible to drive in your own car to San Blas or hire a taxi-service and the transport needs to be organized together with your tour/stay.

We organize the transport to San Blas and back for you together with your stay and for this collaborate closely with a selected number of licensed drivers.

Is a visit to the San Blas Islands suitable for children?

Yes, you can definitely come to San Blas with children. Children usually love the beaches, the boat rides and being on an island. We recommend that children are at least old enough to walk when visiting the islands and keep in mind that most places do not have special baby equipment (baby beds, baby seats or special food/drinkable water).

Please also consider our special discounts for children.

How much luggage can we bring?

We advise to bring only as little luggage as necessary because space in the cars and the boat is limited. Often you can arrange with your hotel/hostel to leave your luggage there.

Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Erica Silverstein

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Best weekend cruise itineraries

2 night trip

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

Related: Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

2 night trip

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

2 night trip

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

Related: Short cruises are cheaper, but are they right for you?

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Essence Grand Cruise

Overview of 3 days 2 nights.

3 day-2 night is the second most popular option for travelers coming to Halong bay, just after a 1-night itinerary. It offers more activities than the daytime or 1-night itinerary and access to the secluded parts of the bay where you feel more relaxed with less-touristy attractions. The price for a 3 day 2 night cruise is almost double that of a 1-night.

2 night trip

Similar to a 2 day cruise or any other overnight itinerary, a 3 day 2 night trip starts at 12:00 - 13:00 and finishes at 11:00 - 12:00. So, the total time onboard is almost 48 hours. The schedule is filled with activities for you to both relax in stunning nature and have a fun and memorable cruising experience.

Halong bay 3 days 2 nights

Why choose 3 day 2 night itineraries?

2 night trip

  • Less tight schedule

While the itinerary of the day tour or 1 night is a bit rushed with continuously moving between destinations and participating in all the activities on the cruise, the 2-night itinerary is more stretching. It takes you 5 hours or more to transfer by car while the total cruising time is just 4-6 hours (for a day cruise) or almost 24 hours (for a 2-day cruise), thus, the time for resting and enjoying nature and scenery is quite short. As a result, a less tight schedule is a huge plus for a 2-night itinerary.

  • Remote landmark exploration

Cruising for 2 days or in a day allows you to access the most outstanding attractions within a short distance. Meanwhile, you have a chance to go to further areas where nature is untouched and incredibly peaceful on a 2-night itinerary. Usually, you will embark on a small junk boat to visit those landmarks during the daytime and get back to the main boat in the late afternoon.

  • More time to join activities and experience facilities onboard

2 night trip

The onboard activities and facilities mostly remain unchanged day by day. Those staying for 2 nights onboard can opt to participate in the activities such as cooking class, Taichi session, squid fishing, Happy Hour, and more either on the 1st or 2nd night.

Besides, state-of-the-art onboard facilities such as a gym, spa, sauna, jacuzzi pool, floating ocean pool, and mini golf course offer unmissable recreation and relaxation activities. The 3-day-2-night itinerary certainly gives you plenty of time to try them as much as possible.

  • Activities in 3 day 2 night itineraries

2 night trip

Cruising in Halong bay for 3 days ensures full leisure and entertainment time. As soon as the cruise sails to the bay, you are amazed by thousands of limestone islands and islets and the vast blue ocean. A schedule is provided in advance to make sure every activity is on track. Those choosing a 2-night itinerary will share the same activities as a 1-night one on day 1 and day 3.

Off-board activities include a visit to the cave, a kayaking trip in the calm area, a hike to the top of the mountain, a bamboo boat trip through a cave, a visit to a fishing village, and many more. The itinerary may be a bit different from one cruise to another depending on their operating route registration.

Onboard activities are included in every night of staying. You can chill on the top deck at sunset, join a cooking demonstration with a traditional dish, savor some cocktails in Happy Hour or canapes at the Sunset party, or give squid fishing a try after dinner. That is not to mention a bunch of modern facilities with exciting activities on upscale cruises such as a golf course, poker club, karaoke, spa, massage, swimming pool, library, etc.

Questions and Answers (6)

Would love to hear your recommendation on a 3 day cruise for a couple with two boys (8 and 11) around the end of July/early August. We prefer avoiding overly crowded places and would love an opportunity for a bit of hiking or cycling when off the boat.

@Saffy, If you want to avoid overcrowded places, you should choose cruises visiting Lan Ha Bay. These cruises usually include cycling activity at Viet Hai Village on Cat Ba Island in their 3-day program. For hiking, you need to book cruises visiting Halong Bay with Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island, Me Cung Cave, etc. However, Halong Bay is more crowded than Lan Ha Bay. Hope this helps. Should you need further assistance, feel free to contact us. Regards, Mary

My husband and I are very active. We love to swim, snorkel, dive, kayak etc. we also would like a large suite. Which cruise would you recommend?

@Amy Allen, Thank you for contacting us. Since we have many cruises at different price ranges, our consultant has sent you an email and will assist you with more details then. Regards,

We are planning trip to Vietnam. Most likely arriving in Hanoi last week of March 2024. We would like to take 3 days 2 nights cruise from Ha Long Bay. Which is the best cruise that does the most activities in showing sightseeing's? We are 8 of us and are seniors age range from 63-83. We prefer to do more sightseeing rather than take cooking class. We also would like to take the cruise that has the most scenic route. I know there are lot of companies and we are very confused. We want to see and admire the nature, picture perfect scenery, therefore, the most scenic route is the most preferred choice with more activities like visiting caves, towns/villages etc. Thank you.

@Christina, You can consider some options with more sightseeing below:

1. Orchid Classic (https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/orchid-classic-cruise.html) - Excursions: Ba Trai Dao Beach - Kayaking at Tra Bau - Viet Hai Village - Ba Ham Lake - Dark & Bright Cave - Cost: $720/Suite Balcony + $36/pax/round-trip shuttle transfer

2. Heritage Binh Chuan (https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/heritage-cruises-binh-chuan-cat-ba-archipelago.html) - Excursions: Trung Trang Cave - Viet Hai Village - Swimming in Lan Ha Bay - Ao Ech Area - Cost: $660/Delta Suite + $40/pax/round-trip shuttle transfer

3. Mon Cheri Cruise (https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/mon-cheri-cruises.html) - Excursions: Tra Bau - Viet Hai Village - Ba Trai Dao - Trung Trang Cave - Cost: $610/Ocean Suite + $32/pax/round-trip shuttle transfer

Please consider and let us know if this works for you.

Frequently asked questions

1. is the 3 day 2 night itinerary best for halong bay.

If you have time and a higher budget, a 3 day 2 night itinerary is highly recommended. It is less rushed than the 1 night or day schedule and includes plenty of activities and isolated attractions in the program.

2. Do we have to change the boat for this itinerary?

Yes, but only for excursions on day 2. On day 2 of most 3-day itineraries, you are picked up by the day boat (a small junk-style boat) and start the journey to the untouched parts of Halong bay. These areas are farther from the mainland and offer the pristine beauty of nature. You will have lunch on the day boat and will come back to the mother boat at around 3 - 4 pm.

3. Is there any 3 day 2 night itinerary including 2 or 3 bays at the same time?

Yes. There are many cruises that combine 2 bays in their 2-night programs. You usually visit one bay on the first and third day by the mother boat and another bay on the second day by a small boat.

4. Is the 2-night itinerary suitable for the elderly?

Yes. The 2-night itinerary is suitable for all travelers including the elderly. Activities listed are all optional, so based on health conditions, you can choose to join activities or not. There are many leisure activities suitable for the elderly such as taking a sampan boat trip through the cave, swimming and sunbathing on the beach, taking an electric car to visit a local village, visiting a pearl farm or floating fishing village, etc.

5. Can I book a 2-night cruise with the budget of $200?

For a 2-night trip, a budget cruise normally costs around US$220 - 240/person excluding transfer. If you want to get a transfer, it may cost US$20 - 30/person/round trip.
