The ultimate guide to the DFDS Amsterdam Mini Cruise

I’ve just got back from a weekend break to Amsterdam with DFDS on one of their mini cruises . I’m a firm believer in making the journey as much of the adventure as the destination, which is why I was so excited to go on the mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Setting sail at 5pm on a Friday from Newcastle, we sailed overnight and woke up with the sun rising over the port. After a 40-minute transfer to Amsterdam, we spent the day exploring the beautiful city before heading back to the boat and returning, waking up on Sunday morning in Newcastle.

If you’re wanting to make the most of your weekends, and have a little luxury weekend adventure, then this could be the trip for you!

Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise at a glance

There are two ships that sail the Newcastle/Amsterdam route: King Seaways and Princess Seaways. For our trip, we were on the Kings Seaways which has two restaurants, a bar, a nightclub/entertainment area, a coffee shop, a children’s play area, a casino, an arcade and duty-free shopping.

There is a whole host of room types including sea views, dog-friendly rooms, premium cabins; commodore and commodore de luxe.

Commodore De Luxe Cabins

The commodore de luxe cabins are the most premium cabins on board – and boy do they come with a lot of extras!

Found on deck 10, these cabins have their own floor and you are greeted by members of the crew who take you to your room.

I couldn’t believe how spacious the rooms are in the commodore de luxe cabins. We had a twin cabin, and there was plenty of space for the two of us. On entering the room, you step into the living room area which has a sofa, chairs and table and dressing table. Then you had the two beds, built into the wall, and it felt very nautical. The bathroom on board had a shower, sink and toilet and was huge compared to the standard rooms (which was very welcome when seasickness hit!). Oh, and let’s not forget the two huge windows which give you the perfect sea view.

Commodore De Luxe cabin | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

But Commodore De Luxe isn’t just about the gorgeous rooms…

You also have access to a private lounge where you can get drinks (soft drinks, wine, beer and prosecco), snacks, teas and coffees as well as a quiet place to sit and enjoy your journey. In the morning, you can also find pastries to keep you going before breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, this is also included with commodore de luxe cabins. Rather than heading to Explorers Kitchen with the rest of the boat, everyone staying in the Commodore De Luxe cabins have their breakfast at the North Sea Bistro. There’s a whole range of hot food, pastries and cold meats and cheeses and it is delightful here, and a lot less hectic that the main Explorer’s Kitchen.

What to eat on DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

There are two main places to eat on board the King Seaways boat for dinner and breakfast – North Sea Bistro and Explorers Kitchen.

North Sea Bistro vegetarian meal | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The North Sea Bistro

The North Sea Bistro is the a la carte restaurant on board and is absolutely beautiful.

It’s a small menu, however a great range of options from steak to seabass to oysters. I actually opted for the vegetarian option, Pommes Anna, which is a medley of thinly sliced potato, zucchini, carrot, beetroot and sweet potato served with pickled red onion and a portobello cream sauce. I can honestly say this exceeded expectations and was full of flavour.

My friend went for the steak, which looked equally as delicious, which came with a peppercorn sauce and potato wedges.

For dessert we both opted for the chocolate fondant which was delicious, but I was so sad that the center wasn’t as gooey as I would like!

The buffet on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The Explorer’s Kitchen

The Explorer’s Kitchen is an all you can eat, around the world buffet. With a wide selection of foods from curries to salmon wellington to pizza – there truly is something for everyone here.

Sadly, when we ate here I was actually starting with sea sickness (it was a rough crossing coming back) so my appeitite was non exsistant at this point. However, I have actually done this sailing before, and usually eat at the buffet. From experince, it’s always a decent meal with lots of options.

The North Sea Bistro costs for 2 Courses is €38.95, and 3 Courses €42.95.

The Explorer’s Kitchen costs €25.95 for adults and you can be there for 1hr30.

Personally, I would choose the North Sea Bistro as it just felt a lot calmer and I really enjoyed my meal here.

Coffee Crew

As well as these two restaurants, there’s also a coffee shop on board which sells Starbucks Coffee and sweet treats.

What to do on a DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

Selfie of Katie at sunrise on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

There is something for everyone onboard the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterd am. We didn’t actually get round to everything we wanted to do on board either – plenty to do on my next trip for sure! Here’s a run down of what’s available;

Bars & Live Music

There are plenty of places to sit down with a drink (can definitely recommend the cocktails!), soak up the atmosphere and be entertained.

The Compass Club is where you can dance to your hearts content however it was the Navigator’s Pub where we found ourselves as there was live acoustic music, which everyone was singing along too, and it was such a good atmosphere here.

At the Compass Club, you can also play bingo at 9pm. Sadly we missed this, but I can imagine it would be a lot of fun!

Arcade & Casino

On board there is a casino area for adults, and an arcade for all ages, which also included an air hockey table.

Children’s Scavenger Hunt

At 7pm on board, a scavenger hunt around the boat takes place for children, and they all looked like they were having a lot of fun! There’s also a mini soft play on board for them as well.

Showing some of the latest films, there are two screens on board showing films throughout the whole evening (I think the last screening took place at 11pm).

It costs around £8 per person and is a really fun way to spend the evening, especially if you don’t want to sit in the bars.

Duty Free Shopping

Of course there is duty free on board, and I always find that DFDS has the best prices compared to other ferry operators. I actually did buy some perfume on board because the price was so good compared to back on land.

As well as your classic duty free offerings, there is also a small clothes store on board too so if you run out of clothes, don’t worry because they’ve got you covered!

How long do you have in Amsterdam on the DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam?

You dock in Holland at around 10am, and if you’re on the day mini cruise, I recommend queing early to get off, to make the most of your trip.

On this trip, we ended up in the very slow passport control queue, so we didn’t get into Amsterdam until just before 12pm. There are coaches back to the boat between 3pm and 4pm, and we headed to the coach around 3:45pm.

If you’re doing the mini cruise, the transfers between the boat and Amsterdam are included in the price. You can pay on the day as well.

Can you leave your belongings on board?

When you’re on one of the mini cruises, yes you can leave your belongings on board when you explore Amsterdam for the day. You have the same room on both journeys, so it’s essentially a floating hotel!

Overall thoughts on the DFDS mini cruise from Amsterdam to Newcastle

Overall, we had a great time on our mini cruise to Amsterdam.

I always think this is a great way to get a flavour for the city, and I’m sure you’ll want to return. If you’re wanting longer in Amsterdam, you can always book an extra night on land through DFDS to make this mini cruise into a whole holiday!

Even though seasickness hit (for the first time ever for me), I would defintely travel again. This was my 6th DFDS cruise to Amsterdam, and every time we have a great time. There is always a great level of service, and the boat is always clean and in good condition.

Here is a bit of a factsheet for planning your ferry trip from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Factsheet

Country: The Netherlands

Language Spoken: Dutch – but you can get by with just English as enough people speak this

Currency : Euros

Known For : Canals, tulips, architecture

Here are some interesting things that you might want to know about Amsterdam. For starters, when we visited we discovered that the city is actually sinking. It lies below sea level, but is being held up by the canal system and wooden poles that support it.

Amsterdam also has more bikes than people. Which honestly I’m not surprised about after visiting. Seriously, getting run over by car isn’t what scares me in Amsterdam it’s the bikes. You just need to be aware and watch out in the cycle lanes.

And if you are wondering why some of the buildings are tall but really narrow, that is because in the 17th Century you actually had to pay based on the width of your house.

Wondering if Amsterdam is worth visiting ? Here is a helpful guide.

If you are wondering how to get from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry then you will need to book through DFDS . They run ferry services between the two cities daily and year round. The ferry crossing takes around 16 hours, departing Newcastle around 5pm and arriving in Amsterdam the next morning.

If you are wondering when the best time of year to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam is we have you covered.

Personally, we think summer is the best time when it comes to weather. The days are brighter for longer, which is nice when you are spending an evening on a boat. You can also sit out on the top deck and enjoy the incredible sea views.

Of course summer is also peak time for people looking to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. This means prices are way more expensive, and deals are harder to come by. Summer in Amsterdam also means an influx of tourists which is a bit frustrating when you only have a day in the city. You will find yourself queuing up quite a lot.

Winter is an ok time to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. The Christmas markets are on in December which is nice, and you can ice skate on the canals if it is cold enough.

The downside though is that the weather will be cold, and it is likely it will be rainy. This can be frustrating when you have such a short time in Amsterdam.

We think the best time to do the cruise is in Spring. May is probably most ideal, as it is just before busy season, but the weather is mild. There are far less tourists in Amsterdam and you can find those Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry 2 for 1 deals.

  • DFDS do some really good deals for their Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise, so do check the website to bag yourself a bargain
  • If you want to spend more than 1 day in Amsterdam you can book your return ticket for a few days later
  • You need to pay for your bus transfer from the ferry terminal to Amsterdam/Newcastle in advance
  • It takes about 30-40 minutes to get from the ferry terminal to Amsterdam itself
  • You can choose various options for your cabin type from single bunk beds, to a double bed. You also need to pay more for a window in your room as the standard option doesn’t include this.

Once you have booked your Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise you are going to want to know the best what to get to Newcastle. The fastest most hassle free option is to drive. There is a car park right near the ferry terminal although be aware that charges do apply. The cost isn’t too bad considering you are leaving your car for a couple of nights and on average you will probably pay around £24 for this.

If you don’t have a car the quickest way to get to Newcastle is on the train. DFDS organise buses that take you directly from the train station to the cruise terminal. They cost around £4.00 per person each way. Or if you are like us and you get to Newcastle super early you can get the metro to Percy Main station and walk over to the ferry terminal.

Check in for our Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise was surprisingly easy and stress free. You can pre-purchase your meals during check in and they are slightly cheaper than what you would pay on board. You also need to make sure that you arrive at least 45 minutes before sailing time. We were super early and within 20 minutes of checking in we were settling into our cabin.

dfds themed mini cruise

So I’m not going to sugar coat it. The rooms are small. We were in the economy section so we had a bunk bed and no window. This was fine as we were expecting this. It was such a cheap trip and for us the room was really just for sleeping. The only issue we had was that the shower was directly over the toilet in the ensuite bathroom. Still when it is only 2 nights you don’t mind as much. Plus, when you have views of the North Sea to look at who needs to spend time in a room anyway? Of course, you can upgrade to bigger rooms, and rooms with windows if you are so inclined.

The different room types you can book when traveling from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry are as follows:

Economy Cabins

As mentioned we booked the economy room with no window. This was fine for us because it was only 2 nights, and when you have a whole ship at your disposal how much time do you want to spend inside your room? Essentially you get a room with bunk beds, and an ensuite bathroom. Space is limited, but again it’s all part of the experience.

Sea View Cabins

Sea View Cabins are similar to the economy cabins but obviously the big difference is they have a window. In honesty if we ever book again we will probably go with the sea view cabin because our cabin did feel a little claustrophobic.

Double Bed Cabins

If you are travelling as a couple it is probably worth splashing out for a double bed cabin. Again you have the choice of inside cabins (no window) and outside cabins (with a window). The double rooms are slightly more expensive than your economy and sea view cabins with bunk beds.

The ships are also kitted out with accessible and pet friendly rooms as well to meet your individual needs.

There is a lot to do on the ship. There are several bars and restaurants, as well as a cinema. For us it was nice to sit down and enjoy a nice dinner at one of the restaurants. They are a little bit pricey so keep that in mind as you might want to bring your own snacks on board instead.

We loved sipping cocktails on the top deck and watching the sun set over the North Sea. This was certainly a trip highlight for us. We also spent a bit of time in a few of the ship’s bars. They had live music playing, and after a few drunk sing-alongs we decided to go to bed.

dfds themed mini cruise

In terms of the restaurants when you travel from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry you can expect the following:

North Sea Bistro

This includes 2 or 3 course meals including things like steak or fish and vegetables. It’s basically your more high end dining option on board.

Explorers Kitchen

The Explorers Kitchen provide an international buffet where you can help yourself to Mediterranean, Asian, and Italian food – plus much more.  Prices start at £22 and the buffet comes highly recommended.

Coffee Crew Café

If you don’t want a bit feast on board, or are craving a morning coffee head to Coffee Crew Café serving Starbucks drinks, and small bites to eat.

You also have the option to partake in some Duty Free Shopping on board, or enjoy some drinks in one of the onboard bars.

The boat arrives in the morning at the port of Ijmuiden and I should mention that it takes a 40 minute bus ride to get into Amsterdam. Our advice would be to try and get on one of the first coaches if you can as this gives you a bit of extra time in Amsterdam. We arrived in the city at around 11am and we had about 5 hours to spend here before making our way back to the ship.

Obviously 5 hours is nothing in a city as incredible as Amsterdam. But if there is something you really want to do we would recommend booking tickets in advance. The bus drops you off right in the centre of the city. Just make sure you look out for bikes as you disembark the coach.  Here are some of our suggestions on how to pass the time.

dfds themed mini cruise

Do a canal cruise

Considering Amsterdam is famous for its canals, a great way to see the city is from the water. We really do recommend going on a cruise to orient yourself with the city. Our tour lasted around an hour and we got to see the incredible architecture and learn all about the history of the city and its canals. It is worth booking your cruise online in advance so that you don’t have to waste time lining up for tickets when you arrive.

dfds themed mini cruise

Fill up on fries and coffee

We didn’t get up early enough to have breakfast on the boat, so we were starving. After the cruise we made our way to a cafe and sat by the canal to eat. If you get the chance to try them, Dutch Fries with mayonnaise are amazing. It is also really nice (weather permitting) to sit by the canal sipping cups of coffee. After all you want to soak in as much of the atmosphere as possible.

dfds themed mini cruise

Walk around the canals

We spent a lot of time exploring the city on foot. We loved the beautiful canals and discovering beautiful streets. It’s such a picturesque place and it’s just really enjoyable walking around getting lost in the beauty of the city.

dfds themed mini cruise

Visit the Floating Flower Market

So the Amsterdam Flower Market is the only floating Flower Market in the world. The shops are located inside a row of barges, and is a homage to the days when flowers arrived here by boat from the countryside.

dfds themed mini cruise

It is probably one of the most colourful places in the city and is a real visual feast. Apart from flowers you can also purchase seeds and gardening tools. It is also a great place to get some souvenirs like fridge magnets and postcards.

dfds themed mini cruise

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum or the National Museum of the Netherlands is a great place to visit to learn all about the arts and history of the country. Now this will probably take the full 5 hours in Amsterdam so maybe best saved for longer trips. But if you are super keen then you can book your tickets here in advance .

Anne Frank House

This is probably one of the most well-known museums in Amsterdam. It’s a very sombre reminder of the horrors inflicted during WW2, and if you do get a chance to visit then do. You will learn all about Anne and her family, and you can tour the place they called home for 2 years whilst hiding from the Nazi’s.

Explore the edgier side of the city

On our way back to the bus we decided to have a quick walk through the back streets of the city and have a look at the coffeeshops. You hear so much about them and it was so strange walking past and seeing what they were like in person.

We actually found out that there are some strict rules when it comes to these coffeeshops, and the sale of marijuana is heavily regulated in the city. For us though, it was fascinating walking around an area that is so different to anything we would see at home. Coffeeshops are not our thing so instead we indulged in a pint of Dutch beer at a bar before heading back to the ship.

dfds themed mini cruise

Explore the Red Light District

Admittedly the Red Light District in Amsterdam isn’t going to be for everyone. But walking through is certainly an eye opening experience to say the least. It’s not as graphic or dangerous as you might think. You will see red-lit windows, sex shops, and strip clubs in the area, which might be out there for some but it’s a testament to the open attitude towards sex the Dutch hold. Also it is the oldest part of the city, and one of the oldest trades, so it is worth a visit.

And whilst we are discussing the openness towards sex, you can also visit the Amsterdam sexmuseum , if you dare.

If you are getting the ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle, then realistically with your day in Amsterdam you probably won’t really need to rely on public transport. The best thing to do is walk around and explore the city on foot.

If you do happen to use public transport though the main options are using the bus, tram, or metro. You are probably best off buying a day ticket for about €8.50. The best thing to do is download the GVB travel app onto your phone and purchase your tickets on here.

When we got back on the boat it gave us time to reflect upon our time in Amsterdam. The cruise was fantastic and definitely worth doing. Tickets can be quite cheap and it is a great idea for a mini break. That being said, we definitely want to go back to Amsterdam and spend a lot more time there. There are a lot of museums we want to see, as well as the Anne Frank house. And it would be awesome having a night out in the city. Fingers crossed we will be back soon and we will have to add it to our never ending list of places we want to go back to!

  • Book your dining in advance if you want to save some money
  • Alternatively eat before you get on the boat and have breakfast once you get to Amsterdam to save money on food
  • Try to avoid the ferry on weekends, it sort of becomes a bit of a booze cruise on Friday and Saturday night
  • Don’t fill up on Space Cakes and get on the boat!

Like we mentioned previously, 5 hours in Amsterdam will not be enough time to see everything the city has to offer. You do have the option to stay longer in Amsterdam. You can either book a one way cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam, and then a separate return from Amsterdam to Newcastle. Or you can select a longer amount of time in Amsterdam when booking your trip.

Just be mindful that it will be more expensive than the usual mini cruise, but despite this it is something we recommend. You can take all the usual stress out of travelling through the airport out of the equation, and sail to Amsterdam in style. You also don’t have to worry about getting back to the boat within the 5 hours, and can really soak up the Dutch culture.

Where to stay when travelling from Amsterdam to Newcastle by ferry

If you decide to stay a little bit longer in Amsterdam here is a bit of a guide to the best areas to stay in the city.

For first time visitors, we recommend staying in the Old Centre. This will mean you are close to the tourist attractions, and all the hustle and bustle. Admittedly accommodation can be a bit expensive here, due to the prime location, so make sure you book well in advance to secure the best deal.

If you are looking for budget accommodation we recommend stying in Oud-Zuid. It’s also very close to the museums, and the Heineken Experience.

Our favourite part of Amsterdam has to be the Canal Belt. It’s probably the most romantic part of the city, with all those charming cafes, and gorgeous canals. It’s centrally located, and great for those on a short trip to the city.

You might be wondering how much it costs to get from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry. Truth be told this will be dependent on a number of things such as the time of year you book, if you are staying longer in Amsterdam, and whether you plan to eat on the boat. As a rough idea here are some numbers:

Return trip from Newcastle to Amsterdam: £220 for 2 (unless you can get a 2 for 1 deal which do pop up sometimes).

Food on board: £60 for 2

Spending money in Amsterdam: €30 -€100 depending on what attractions you want to see.

Amsterdam is a pretty expensive city to visit. Maybe not in the same realms as  London  or  Oslo , but it’s definitely not super cheap.

We recommend budgeting about €80 per person for you day in Amsterdam. This will include things like attractions, food, drink, and transport.

If you aren’t planning on eating at expensive restaurants, or spending the day sipping cocktails you can definitely do things a lot cheaper. Plus with the limited time you will probably not be able to spend that much money on attractions and the like.

Here are some of the things we recommend packing for your Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry trip.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – especially for walking around Amsterdam
  • A warm jacket – especially useful for the boat as it can get windy and cold if you are standing outside
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Layered clothes for a variety of weather as this can be unpredictable in Amsterdam (and Newcastle for that matter)
  • Rain/ waterproof items.

Here are some final tips for getting the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

  • Pack a few snacks as again these will be cheaper than buying them onboard.
  • Check Groupon and other booking sites for any 2 for 1 deals on your ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam.
  • Try and get to the front of the queue and be one of the first off the boat to give yourself more time in Amsterdam.
  • Be careful when booking tours in advance especially if these include timed starts as it is hard to predict when you will be in Amsterdam.
  • Don’t bring drugs onto the boat!
  • Carry your ID with you at all times in Amsterdam, as you will need to show it to police if you are stopped.
  • Watch out for bikes in Amsterdam!

For us the Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise was absolutely worth it. The cruise itself was really enjoyable and relaxing. A big part of the holiday was enjoying our time on the boat and watching the sunset. Despite the tickets being cheap the food and drink onboard does get a bit pricey so keep that in mind when weighing up your costs. That being said if you are wanting to travel a little differently than we recommend going from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry.

If you are trying to decide between London or Amsterdam here is a helpful guide.

Princess Seaways ferry Wiki

Previously, the vessel was operated under the names Peter Pan (1986-1993), Spirit of Tasmania (1993-2002), MS Spir (2002-2003), Fjord Norway (2003-2006), Princess of Norway (2006-2011) and Princess Seaways (since 2011). From the same Peter Pan-Class are the ferries King Seaways , GNV Cristal , GNV Atlas , Cotentin .

The ship was launched on November 30, 1985, and entered service on June 2, 1986 (inaugural cruise). Originally the ferry (Peter Pan) was owned by TT LINE. In the period 1993-2002, the ship was chartered (as Spirit of Tasmania) by Tasmania's Government for the Bass Strait daily crossings on the Australia-Tasmania route Melbourne - Devonport (travel time 15 hours). In September 2002, the vessel was laid up in Sydney NSW and put out on sale. In 2003, it was sold to FJORD LINE and drydock-refitted in Frederikshavn Denmark (at Orskov Yard). Renamed "Fjord Norway", in 2003-2005 the ferry served the Norway-Denmark route Bergen - Haugesund -Egersund-Hanstholm. In 2005-2006 it operated the UK-Norway route Newcastle-Bergen (via Stavanger ).

In November 2006, the ship was acquired by DFDS, renamed "Princess of Norway", drydock-refurbished in Frederikshavn and deployed for Newcastle-Bergen service (via Stavanger and Haugesund). The Newcastle-IJmuiden service started in May 2007, together with the fleet mate King of Scandinavia (now King Seaways).

The ship is powered by four MAK marine diesel engines (model Krupp 8M552) with combined power output 19,9 MW.

DFDS Mini Cruise to Amsterdam Review

7-9 February 2015

Reviewed by Debbie Tasker

On Saturday morning (7 February) me and my partner travelled from Manchester to Newcastle for a mini cruise to Amsterdam with DFDS. The journey was around 3 hours and when we got near the port it was well signposted. Our satnav kept insisting on taking us the wrong way though for the last couple of miles so we ignored it and followed the signs for the international passenger terminal. The car park had plenty of spaces and is a stone’s throw from the main building. You get a ticket and pay on return, charges are £12 per day.

I do dread check-in and boarding when going on overseas trips I have to admit, but this time it was smooth quick and painless! Two minutes to check-in and get boarding passes, a five minute wait in the queue to go through passport control and we were walking through the tunnel and on to the King Seaway Ferry. Marvellous and a first for me to not be getting stressed about all the waiting around.

As we entered the boat some of the crew bid you good afternoon which was a nice touch and reminded me of The Love Boat one of my favourite programmes back in the seventies. We looked at our boarding passes which also double up as key card and found our room number 654 on Deck 6. We saw signs for deck six and followed them but when we got there we couldn’t see our room, we went back up to deck seven and asked a member of staff to direct us, she pointed us in the right direction (we were on the wrong side of the ship!). The room was a very basic sea view cabin, we were a little disappointed it was twin beds but having said that they were exceptionally comfy and all the bedding was crisp, clean and sparkly white. There are overhead reading lights which are handy as there is no radio or television in the cabins. A small en-suite bathroom with towels provided and was adequate for our needs. There is also a bedside table, mirror and coat hooks with a couple of hangers. We didn’t hear any surrounding noise throughout the journey but the engine was very loud. Now I am no expert in sea travel but my partner is a seasoned traveller and he agreed that it did seem rather loud in our cabin, maybe we were situated over it? It wasn’t a problem to us as we are sound sleepers but if booking you might want to avoid this cabin if you think it could cause you a problem.

After unpacking and taking in the beautiful sea view we headed up to the 7 Seas buffet restaurant and booked our table for dinner, then explored the ship. It was a big WOW from me as there is so much do; bars, a casino, two cinema screens with two showings per evening, Duty Free shops for all your bargains, three restaurants serving the most delicious looking menus and even a night club for all us party animals! After a nice walk around everywhere we went in the Navigators bar for a quick drink, prices are, I would say, as you would expect. After which we went back to our cabin to shower and change.

As I have already mentioned I have never been on an overnight sea trip before and was very unsure what I should wear for dinner. I imagined it would be very dressy so opted for a dress and shoes, smart but not too over the top. I found when we ventured out that most people were actually dressed quite casually – jeans, jumpers etc… so don’t worry if there is no ballgown in your wardrobe.

The Seven Seas Restaurant is situated on deck seven. A friendly, welcoming waitress showed us to our table and said to help ourselves. We got up and went over to where a massive selection of food is served, there truly is something for everybody’s taste buds! We were spoilt for choice! Splendid starters of seafood pates compotes salads soups chicken wings – you name it they have it, I have never had a beetroot muffin before but I have now! A traditional roast with a few variations is available too as is the most delicious Chinese I have ever had, the lamb and duck was to die for, even the chips I can honestly say were the best I have ever had. Everything is presented well, piping hot and really tasty. There is a Children’s corner which has lower counters and I have to admit I got some chicken wings from here as I passed. Desserts were also truly Scrumptious and again a huge variety, to name a few; cakes, mousses, jellies and fruit. In the kid’s areas is a whippy ice cream machine, yes you have guessed I had to have a go and I topped it with every nut, sauce and sprinkles they had on it, much to Al (my partners) amusement. There were also many types of homemade breads and cheese available. I wouldn’t say it was overly busy but after waiting around 10 minutes to be asked what we would like to drink I had to call a waitress and order, she was very polite and quick bringing the drinks. We had a sprite and a coffee which came to around 8 euros. There is also Explorers Steakhouse and Blue Riband eateries there seemed to be an Italian too where the aroma strays into the bar and smells divine. I saw a gang of teenagers eating pizza there and it all looked great. With very full tummies we left and headed for the Navigators bar for an after dinner drink.

A brilliant young man named Steve Young was entertaining the guests with his cool voice and superb guitar playing, he was happy to take requests and would give anything a try. He does all the classics along with current stuff and we enjoyed his performance on both evenings. When his set had finished we ventured into the Columbus Club on deck 9 to strut our funky stuff (well this isn’t entirely true, it was just me actually) great tunes and atmosphere and a perfect end to our evening. We retired to bed around 1.45am happy and tired.

After a lovely night’s sleep we were woken by customer services announcing it was 8am and what areas were now open, this made me giggle as it reminded me of Hi Di Hi… good morning campers! The announcements continue throughout the journey into port so no chance of sleeping in. We packed up what we needed for the day and headed for breakfast, no tables are allocated for this so we chose to sit next to a large window and watch as we arrived. There was a full English and a continental on offer, again we were spoilt for choice everything tasted freshly cooked and we enjoyed it immensely. One thing I would say is nobody told us where tea and coffee was so we had to find it. I then couldn’t find milk, I asked one of the waiters and he pointed me in the direction of the large milk machine used for cereal, as I hadn’t found a jug I had to put it in a cup which I felt was rather uncouth only a little niggle but something that could be corrected with little effort.

We arrived in Holland rather late as weather conditions prevented us entering the port on time. Once we had disembarked and been through passport control and travelled by coach to Amsterdam we only had around two and a half hours to sight see. The driver told us where we would be picked up and we set of on our adventure. Amsterdam is a stunning city with beautiful architecture and lots of character. We hadn’t been given a map on the ferry and forgot to ask at customer services on the way off so we found a tourist information centre and collected one from there. As our time had been cut short we decided to head for Ann Frank’s house first, the queue was very long and we couldn’t risk standing in it and then not having time to actually see inside so we left it. There are lots of shops and cafes and it isn’t that much unlike Manchester apart from the bikes – there are literally thousands of them parked up or nearly knocking you off your feet if, like us, you keep straying to the bike lane. We had a look round the museum and a couple of other places of interest but all too soon it was time to head back to the coach.

Boarding took a little long this time once through passport control we had to wait about 45 minutes. Once back on the King Seaway we booked our reservation for dinner and went to have a snooze for a couple of hours. We woke to extremely choppy seas but it didn’t bother us as we headed up to the Seven Seas for our evening meal. I meant to ask for a window table when I booked but it slipped my mind so when we arrived I asked was it possible to have one? The member of staff who I think might have been the manager looked through her table plan and apologised as none were available but we could come back later and she would reserve us one. I said no it is fine we will have our original table it is no problem, she then said hang on and I will see what I can do a minute later she came back and said she had sorted one – excellent customer service and thank you! We enjoyed another out of this world meal. Although a lot of it was more or less the same as the previous evening there was still plenty to sample that we had no room for the night before! Again hot tasty food, clean tidy surroundings and excellent staff.

We decided to retire early as it had been a long day but before we did we popped in the bar again for a hot chocolate and to listen to Steve for a while. By this time lots of people were suffering as the ferry was rocking and rolling and at times it was hard to keep your footing. As I mentioned earlier we were absolutely fine but seeing people hanging on to the rails and looking very green I would advise you invest in some sort of sea sickness prevention if you think it might be a problem. We headed to bed and had yet another fantastic night’s sleep. We were woken by our very own Gladys Pugh (Hi Di Hi for all you young uns’). After showering and packing we went for breakfast. Again great food there doesn’t seem to be many staff around for breakfast time so our plates weren’t cleared even after 15 minutes of finishing eating so I moved them to an empty table we had another drink and then left. The dirty dishes were still where I had put them maybe this needs looking at? We went out on deck 10 to enjoy the scenery and watch as we sailed back into Newcastle. There are some amazing views to be had and I was quite taken aback at just how beautiful everything looked. We stayed out and watched the staff at the dock side going about their business making sure we were safe and everything was secure. When the announcement for foot passengers to head for deck five came though we picked our bags up from the cabin. Experience from the day before told us there would be no rush as it does take time for everybody to leave and as we all know you always get the pushes and shovers who I would prefer to avoid. Once through customs we headed for our car and started the journey home.

We had an absolutely marvellous time and were sorry to leave the King Seaways ferry. Our whole trip was made even more special by the helpful friendly staff who work very hard and seem to never sleep. I have already recommended this cruise to family and friends and one has booked for March while another is thinking of doing so also!! I know they will have the time of their lives just as we did.

Well done DFDS Seaways and thank you for memorable weekend.

Our Amsterdam Zoo mini cruise

Samantha Rickelton May 1, 2015

A mini cruise to Amsterdam zoo makes a wonderful family short break and although you are only away for two nights, it feels as if you have been on a real adventure. Our family travelled together from Newcastle overnight in a refurbished 5 berth cabin and arrived in Amsterdam port the following morning feeling very refreshed after a smooth crossing. Upon leaving our ship, we were greeted by our friendly coach driver who handed us our zoo tickets and took us on a mini-tour of Amsterdam during our 40 minute transfer to Artis Zoo. We were given clear instructions to wait at the zoo entrance at 3pm prompt when we would be collected and taken back to our ship.

Amsterdam zoo is located in the heart of the city centre – it is easy to navigate around with lots of information signs in both Dutch and English. The zoo is completely flat too meaning that it is accessible for both wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is a lot to explore from aquariums to monkey islands however everything is relatively close together meaning it is easy for little ones to walk around without complaining they are tired.

Amsterdam Zoo Family Fun

The gardens and enclosures are beautifully manicured and very well kept – education is of huge importance and our children enjoyed reading and learning about the animals as we watched their natural behaviour.

Highlights for our family included watching a Zebra foal feeding from it’s mother, a giraffe drinking water from a pond, watching a lion prowl amongst the rocks, strolling past a Pelican who had decided to hop over the fence and walking amongst lemurs in their enclosure.

It was a very special experience being able to get up and close and personal to these animals – even if they did just want to chill in the sunshine!

Amsterdam Zoo Zebras

There are some fantastic indoor enclosures to discover too including a large aquarium and insectarium. You simply can’t miss experiencing butterfly world and as soon as you enter the doors you feel as if you have been transported to a tropical paradise. There are exotic butterflies chasing each other as you walk amongst the lush plants. You can even catch new butterflies hatching from their chrysalis if you are lucky. The whole experience was magical.

Amsterdam Zoo Butterflies

There are various dining options available at the zoo. We decided on the Cheetah restaurant due to it’s fantastic location. It was a sunny day and we were able to enjoy an alfresco lunch and a cold beer whilst overlooking a family of giraffes on one side and our children play in the adventure play area on the other. Bliss!

As we left to zoo at 3pm we certainly felt as though we had packed a lot in and learned a lot too. We had managed to see everything we wanted to without feeling rushed. A mini break to Amsterdam zoo certainly gets the thumbs up from us.
