Shepherd Neame Visitor Centre and Brewery Tours

Britain's oldest brewer can be found in Faversham, Kent, where beer has been produced for over 850 years.

The Shepherd Neame Brewery, set in the centre of this historic market town, is open to visitors who wish to discover more about this proudly independent family company and its wide range of award-winning beers.

The Visitor Centre is set in a beautifully-restored medieval hall house and from here, you can join a guided tour which will take you through the heart of this busy working brewery to see how beer is made from barley to bottle and from hop to hand-pump! Taste natural mineral water from the brewery's well, try some malted barley and smell locally-grown Kentish hops.

The tour covers all aspects of brewing from raw material to distribution. Vehicles from the brewery's historic fleet are on display, along with a recreated cooper's workshop, bygone pub signs and a collection of hop-picking memorabilia.

At the end of the tour there's also the chance to sample some of Shepherd Neame’s fine Kentish Ales during an enlightening tutored tasting - audience participation encouraged! Finally, visit the Brewery Shop and pick up a souvenir, gift and some beer. A range of evening tours for those looking for a night out with a difference are also available.

Please note that due to the industrial nature of the brewery, it is only open to visitors aged 18 years and over.

Brewery tours currently run Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Brewery Tour and Tutored Tasting is priced £22.50 per person.

The Bank Holiday weekend is as good a time as any to crack out a glass of bubbly or a cheeky gin and tonic - or two.

But have you ever wondered how some of our county's amazing alcoholic produce made it into the bottle?

If you have ever wanted to get up, close and personal with the grapes, grains or fruits which produce Kent's delicious beers, wines, ciders and spirits, you could always take a tour of one of our breweries, distilleries or vineyards.

There are a number of locations throughout Kent where you can delight in tasting both new beverages and old favourites .

So if you'd like to spend your weekend doing something a bit different, Kent Live has rounded up the breweries and vineyards you can tour in our county.

But no matter where you go, make sure you don't drive home afterwards!

Shepherd Neame Brewery, Court Street, Faversham

The secrets of Britain's oldest brewer can be revealed at the Shepherd Neame Brewery's in Faversham .

Visitors can taste natural mineral water from the brewery's well, try malted barley, and give some locally grown Kentish hops a smell.

The full tour, lasting around 80 minutes, includes a tutored tasting of ales and lagers, and visitors can view the hop picking tools of days gone by.

Hush Heath Estate and Winery, Five Oak Lane, Staplehurst

Visitors to Hush Heath can take a walk through the estate's vineyards, orchards and ancient oak woodlands.

Fans of wine and cider can take a self-guided tour, accompanied with three free samples of the vineyard's alcoholic offerings, without having to book in advance.

Alternatively, a variety of guided tours with tutored tastings can be booked for as little as £20 per person.

Copper Rivet Distillery, Chatham Dockyard, Leviathan Way, Chatham

This distillery is located in a gorgeous Victorian red-brick building overlooking the River Medway.

Visit the Copper Rivet Distillery to witness the entire distillation process of gin, vodka and whisky from grain to glass.

Plus, what better end to a day than getting to taste some of the delicious spirits?

Old Dairy Brewery, Station Road, Tenterden

The Old Dairy Brewery is well known for its delicious beers and ales, available at pubs up and down the county.

Visit during the week to see the brewery in action - the hour and a half long tour costs just £10 per person.

The brewery also combines a brewery tour with a trip on the Kent and East Sussex Railway - a perfect day out for family and friends.

Biddenden Vineyards, Gribble Bridge Lane, Biddenden

This vineyard is open to the public with free admission throughout the year.

Self-guided tours are available at no charge, but if you're looking to learn more, guided tours are also available.

Guided tours always end with a visit to the vineyard shop, where a sampling of the wines, ciders and juices is available.

The shop also features a wide variety of jams and other produce produced in Kent.

Barnsole Vineyard, Fleming Road, Staple

Barnsole Vineyard produce sparkling and still wines on land farmed for centuries.

Visitors can visit and take a mini-tour and tasting for free at any time.

But for a more in-depth experience, hour long guided tours of the vineyard, winery and a talk on the history of English wine costs just £11 per person.

You can always buy a bottle to take home with you afterwards, as well!

Greensand Ridge Distillery, Shipbourne

The Greensand Distillery produces award winning gin, as well as casks of apple brandy and rum.

An impressive two and a half hour long tour will teach you all there is to know about distilling gin, before taking home your own handmade bottle.

Gin and tonics and cocktails are never far away, while you select your own botanicals and operate your own copper pot still.

Gusbourne, Kenardington Road, Appledore

The Gusbourne Vineyard is where a selection of award-winning English sparkling wines start their lives.

Its tasting room is open all year, with no need to make a reservation, and wines are available to buy by the glass, bottle or case.

Guided tours include visits to the vineyard, winery, and a tutored tasting, and cost £25 per person.

Anno Distillers, Pattenden Lane, Marden

The gin lover in your life would definitely enjoy taking a tour at this distillery.

A two and a half hour tour includes sampling five different gins - and at £25 per person, the ticket includes a £5 discount against a 70cl bottle of gin purchased from the distillery's shop.

A shorter tour, an hour long, costs only £12 per head.

Ramsgate Brewery, Hornet Close, Broadstairs

The Ramsgate Brewery produces around one million pints of beer every year, and their regular beers are made using local hops.

Tours feature plenty of ale samples as well as an insider's view on how their beer is made.

Westerham Brewery, Beggars Lane, Westerham

Tours at the Westerham Brewery give visitors an insight into how their beers are brewed - with plenty of samples to show off the end product.

Beers and ales can also be paired with food samples to demonstrate the best way to consume your favourite beers.

Events vary depending on the size of the group you wish to take along with you.

Chapel Down Winery, Small Hythe, Tenterden

Tours of this winery start with an introduction to Chapel Down, before a walk through the vineyard and an insight into the process of turning grapes into wine.

The tour is topped off with a tutored tasting of the winery's award winning sparkling and still wines.

Daily tours are available from March to November, and run for around an hour and 45 minutes.

Shepherd Neame brewery

The Shepherd Neame brewery was founded in 1698 and local records indicate that commercial brewing has taken place on the site since 1573. Shepherd Neame is recognised as Britain’s oldest brewery that has been continuously operated by the same family for over 300 years.

The brewery holds a rich heritage and is known for producing exceptional ales and beers that are available in over 300 Shepherd Neame pubs in southeast England.

Brewery tours allow visitors to learn about both the brewery’s history and the brewing process and you can enjoy a beverage at the end of the tour.

Visiting the Shepherd Neame brewery

The Shepherd Neame brewery is located in Faversham’s town centre and most points of interest in the town centre are no more than a five-minute walk from here.

Guided tours operate twice a day (at 11am and 2pm) Wednesday to Saturday.

Visitors must not wear open-toed or high-heeled shoes and all visitors must be at least 18 years old.

Because much of the tour takes place in an historic building, tours are not suitable for disabled visitors in wheelchairs.

Tours run for approximately 80 minutes but it is best to allow at least two hours to give you a little more time to enjoy a drink or two at the end of the tour.
