If Killruddery House and Gardens seem like they're straight out of a film, that's because they are.

Anyone who has seen My Left Foot, Far and Away or Angela's Ashes may recognise this magnificent Tudor Revival mansion. It’s one of Ireland’s great historic houses and had a leading role in some of TV and film’s biggest hits, not to mention playing its part in the story of Ireland’s Ancient East .

But there’s more to Killruddery than star power. The elegant house is very much a family home, and can be visited on a guided tour. The 800-acre estate is a working farm that produces ingredients for the onsite restaurant, tea room and farm shop, and the gardens are an exquisite example of 17th century formal garden design.

And then there's the setting – located in the shadow of the Wicklow Mountains , Killruddery is nestled into one of the most beautiful landscapes in Ireland.

Family history

It all started back in the mid-1600s when William Brabazon, the first Earl of Meath, arrived in Ireland as the Vice-Treasurer of King Henry VIII of England. He came into possession of the lands at Killruddery and planted roots that remain to this day.

The Brabazons have weathered fire, war, drownings and the odd scandal, but they’re still here, and today, three generations of the family, the Earl and Countess of Meath, their son and his wife, Lord and Lady Ardee and their children, all live in Killruddery House .

The interiors feature elaborate chimney pieces, stained glass, magnificent stucco work and frequent appearances of the Brabazon family’s hawk and wyvern motifs. Highlights include the library – the only room that remains unchanged from the 17th century, and the Orangery – a domed conservatory that was inspired by the Crystal Palace in London. Rumour has it that the family tiara had to be sold to finance its construction.

Killruddery: a bird's eye view

The view is always better from up here! Just take a look at these aerial shots of Killruddery House and Gardens.

killruddery-house-gardens-wicklow-aerial-view

The great outdoors

As remarkable as the house is, the gardens at Killruddery more than match it. Designed by a French Huguenot gardener named Bonet in the mid-1600s, they were inspired by the gardens at Versailles and are among the finest examples of classic French style in the world.

The hedge-lined paths and parterre invite you to wander, and two 187-metre reflecting pools, known as the Long Ponds, tempt you to stop and contemplate the clouds above. A natural amphitheatre is said to have inspired the writings of novelist Sir Walter Scott and a walled garden has been extensively renovated and now supplies Killruddery’s restaurant and tea room with fresh produce.

Add in 20 acres of grass, numerous flowering borders and acres of woodland and you get an outdoor playground that seems all the more incredible when you consider it’s just a short drive from Dublin city .

A mansion open to the public

Killruddery House is an Irish manor house on the Greystones side of County Wicklow in Ireland. Built around 1618, it was once the home of the Earls of Meath. A magical place, renowned for its architecture and sublime French gardens!

Visit Killruddery House and Gardens

Killruddery Manor is located on the R761, not far from the peaceful village of Greystones .

Built on a rather large, well-landscaped plot, the building was restored in the 19th century and its gardens enlarged during the same period.

Renovated in pure Elizabethan style, the manor boasts a distinctive “Clock Tower”, which was erected in the courtyard by Reginald Brabazon, then 13th Earl of Meath. A special feature of this clock is that its pendulum is propelled by a hydraulic water jet.

The Orangerie also boasts an impressive collection of marble statues, collected between 1830 and 1850 by the manor’s then owner.

Take a stroll through Killrudderry ‘s formal gardens : the manor is one of the few with such a well-preserved garden!

The site has been used for numerous film and TV shoots, including : Angela’s Ashes, The Tudors and Camelot.

Kilruddery House & Gardens

santa visit killruddery

The gardens are very large and in parts laid out formally, with neatly trimmed beech hedges forming patterns and much statuary, while other parts, notably the densely wooded “wilderness”, act as a foil.

All images on this page by  tatchie

The twin canals, or ‘long ponds ‘ are each 187m long and once were stocked with fish to supply the kitchens.

One of the most interesting parts of the garden is the Sylvan Theatre , which is as its name suggests an area built in a woodland setting designed for performances.

Although these were popular throughout Europe in the 18th century, few survive and this is the only one in Ireland.  It is still used too – Killruddery has a very active programme of arts events.

santa visit killruddery

Access to the Orangery is only available with tours of the house.

Film buffs will be entertained trying to spot locations from some very well known movies that used Kilruddery as a location, including “ Far and Away “, “ Dancing at Lunaghsa “, “ The Count of Monty Cristo ” and “ The Magnficent Ambersons “.

Visiting Killruddery

The gardens are open daily from May to September and at weekends only in April and October.

Kilruddery House has been home to the to the Earls of Meath since 1618 and as it is their family home is accessible on a limited basis and by guided tour only.

Tours of the house are available between 1pm and 5pm during the months of July, August and September only

Locals react to President Biden's first day of vacation in Santa Ynez

santa visit killruddery

Juliet is your community news reporter covering the South Coast of Santa Barbara County.

This week, President Joe Biden and the first lady are visiting the small town of Santa Ynez. They arrived at the Santa Barbara Airport early Tuesday morning.

"I think it's great. It's a small-town feel in California which has so many big places," said local Madalyn Stone. "Ronald Reagan used to live here so it feels very in-line to have another president here."

The Biden visit has local business owner John Copeland of Rancho Olivos sending out invites.

"I reached out to the White House to write to the president and say, you know, hey, come drop by and try some olive oil!" Copeland said.

Most people say they haven’t noticed a change in town since the president's arrival, but pilot Bill Krauch says the five-day flight restriction for the area caused him to make adjustments.

"I moved the plane to Santa Maria, and I can fly out of there," explained Krauch, Santa Ynez Valley Airport Board Member.

He says it's different from the last time a president was in the area.

"We’ve never had a no-fly zone at the airport. When Reagan was here, there'd be a no-fly zone over his ranch, but it was very confined," Krauch said.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's officials and Secret Service agents outside the ranch where the president is believed to be staying would not confirm or deny who was staying at the private residence or for how long they would be in the area.

We’re told the president does not have any public or private appearances scheduled during his stay on the Central Coast.

Biden to send adviser to China amid foreign policy focus in final months

U S President Joe Biden will dispatch his national security adviser Jake Sullivan to China next week as the White House aims to manage the complicated US-China relationship in the Democrat’s final months in office, according to the White House.

Mr Sullivan’s three-day visit with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that is set to begin on Tuesday is expected to raise US concerns about China’s support for Russia’s military industrial complex as Moscow’s war in Ukraine grinds on, Chinese military assertiveness in the South China Sea, provocative action by North Korea, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, and Beijing’s tensions with Taiwan.

The Chinese are likely to raise concerns about American tariffs as Beijing continues to repair its economy in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Biden in May slapped major new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminium and medical equipment.

Mr Sullivan and Mr Wang are also expected to discuss cooperation between the two countries on stemming the flow of pre-cursor chemicals used to make fentanyl, maintaining communication between the two countries, and artificial intelligence.

“These meetings are consistent with efforts to maintain this strategic channel of communication to responsibly manage the relationship and are a product of the November 2023 Woodside Summit between President Biden and President Xi (Jinping),” said White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett, referring to the leaders face-to-face talks on the side-lines of last year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco.

This will be Mr Sullivan’s ninth meeting with Mr Wang and his predecessors over the course of the administration to discuss the two economic rivals complicated relationship, but his first visit to China as national security adviser.

The last US national security adviser to visit China was Susan Rice in 2016.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the two sides discussed a visit by Mr Sullivan at last year’s Biden-Xi summit and it comes after months of planning by the two sides.

The announcement was made as Mr Biden is vacationing in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, where he has spent some time meeting with aides charting out policy priorities for the final months of his presidency.

The summit is not expected to lead to any major announcements by the two countries, according to a senior administration official.

The official, who briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House, said the focus of the meeting is to maintain communications on the host of difficult issues and demonstrate “that even amidst competition that we can find constructive ways to work with each other”.

The high-level visit by Mr Sullivan to China could potentially set the ground for another face-to-face meeting for Mr Biden with Mr Xi.

The two leaders last November spent four hours together at a bucolic Northern California estate — in meetings, a working lunch and a garden stroll — as they looked to steady a relationship that has been fraught for much of Mr Biden’s time in office.

Their meeting led to modest agreements to combat illegal fentanyl and re-establish military communications.

But there were still deep differences on economic competition and global security threats.

The Sullivan visit comes as both candidates looking to succeed Mr Biden, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump, are vowing to carry out tough China policies.

India’s Modi visits Ukraine this week, after a recent trip to Moscow. Here’s what it could mean

santa visit killruddery

Associated Press

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a historic visit Friday to Ukraine, a month and a half after he traveled to Moscow to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Officials in India and Ukraine have said the visit will focus on boosting economic ties and cooperation in defense, science and technology.

But analysts say the visit could also be an attempt to have India strike a more neutral stance after what has been seen as a lean toward Russia, given Modi’s recent Moscow visit , his country’s historic, Cold War-era relationship with Russia and New Delhi’s avoidance of directly criticizing Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Why is Modi visiting Ukraine?

Modi’s landmark visit is the first to Ukraine from a prime minister of India since the country established diplomatic relations with Ukraine over 30 years ago. He will arrive in Kyiv after a two-day visit to Poland .

Analysts say the timing of the trip is aimed at controlling fallout from the Indian leader’s July 8-9 trip to Russia.

That trip coincided with a NATO leaders gathering in Washington and Russian missile strikes on a hospital in Ukraine that killed scores of people, drawing strong criticism from Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader called Modi’s meeting “a huge disappointment” and “a devastating blow to peace efforts” after the Indian leader was seen hugging Putin.

While Modi did not address the missile strikes directly, he alluded to the bloodshed while sitting next to Putin, and condemned any attack that harms innocent people.

This week’s Ukraine trip represents India “trying to balance the situation” after being seen as “tilting towards Russia,” said K C Singh, a strategic affairs expert and former diplomat.

Indian officials are downplaying any connections with the Moscow trip. “This is not a zero-sum game … these are independent, broad ties,” Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal said this week.

Despite pressure from the West, New Delhi has refrained from condemning Russia’s invasion or voting against it in U.N. resolutions. It has avoided taking sides and urged Ukraine and Russia to resolve the conflict through dialogue.

“Modi’s visit is designed to some extent to show that New Delhi’s strategic orientation remains non-alignment, and as such, to keep balance in its foreign policy,” said Derek Grossman, an Indo-Pacific analyst at the RAND Corporation.

What are India’s ties to Russia?

India and Russia have had strong ties since the Cold War, and New Delhi’s importance as a key trading partner for Moscow has grown since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

India has joined China in becoming a key buyer of Russian oil following sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies that shut most Western markets off to Russian exports.

Modi’s visit to Moscow was seen by analysts as reinforcing their partnership, especially since Russia remains a crucial trade and defense partner. Some 60% of India’s military systems and hardware is of Russian origin, and New Delhi now gets more than 40% of its oil imports from Russia.

Trade between the two has also seen a sharp increase, touching close to $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, according to India’s foreign ministry.

What about India’s ties to Ukraine?

Bilateral trade between India and Ukraine is much lower, at about at $3 billion before the invasion, but Modi and Zelenskyy have interacted since at the sidelines of global events and the Ukrainian foreign minister also visited New Delhi earlier this year.

India has also provided several consignments of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the invasion.

Analysts say Zelenskyy is unlikely to raise Modi’s meeting with Putin – at least publicly.

But Modi’s Moscow visit and the India-Russia relationship will be a “strong undertone” to his Ukraine trip, even if it not explicitly mentioned in public statements, added Chietigj Bajpaee, who researches South Asia at the Chatham House think tank.

How will this trip be perceived?

The trip is likely to be well-received in the U.S. and other Western countries that had been critical of Modi’s meeting with Putin in July, Grossman said.

For Modi, this trip is an opportunity “to engage Zelenskyy and secure Indian interests there, push back against Russian overreach and placate the West,” Grossman added.

But while the trip will offer some reassurance to the West, it will remain clear that India maintains a closer relationship with Moscow and “Modi’s visit will not change this perception,” Bajpaee said.

Modi is unlikely to use this visit to seek a role for India as a peacemaker in the conflict, which some had speculated it would do at the onset of the war given New Delhi’s ties to Russia and emerging stature globally.

“Indian behavior… has been to try to stay out of resolving it, and to only occasionally comment against further aggression,” said Grossman, adding that India — unlike China or Turkey — hasn’t come forward with a peace plan, for example.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin will be observing Modi’s visit, “but short of any statements that are highly critical of Russia, it is unlikely to be concerned,” Bajpaee said.
