We Tested AI Travel Planning Apps—Here Are the 3 That Actually Worked
Ai travel tools are popping up all the time, and some of them are starting to work. here are three we’ve tested, plus tips for how to make the most of them..
- Copy Link copied
We asked three AI travel tools to plan a weekend in Charleston, South Carolina.
Courtesy of Explore Charleston
I was slogging through the latest generation of artificial intelligence travel-planning tools when a stunning thing happened: I found one that pretty much did what it promised.
I was testing AI programs that purport to create instant, customized travel itineraries. Along the way I’d come across many of the hilarious, hallucinatory responses you might have read about or experienced yourself with AI tools like ChatGPT . (One sent me to an activity in Burlington, Vermont, instead of Charleston, South Carolina. Another recommended an EconoLodge as a historic hotel. And so on.)
But, against all odds and expectations, three programs proved capable of producing decent, coherent, first-draft itineraries within seconds in response to plain-language prompts: Mindtrip, Vacay, and GuideGeek.
Keep in mind, all of them produce travel plans that at best serve as outlines for you to modify and build upon. They provide some good ideas you might otherwise miss. They put a rough plan together much faster than you would using the “old fashioned” way of googling for information and searching through online booking tools.
That said, some information you get is dated, imprecise, or simply wrong. If you tried to follow the itinerary from one of these tools exactly, without checking anything before you left home, you’d wind up with a script for a Hollywood comedy: AI Family Vacation (actually that’s not a bad movie idea).
I put each of these tools to the same test: I asked them to plan a four-day visit for two to Charleston , where we wanted to eat at farm-to-table restaurants that reflect authentic South Carolina cuisine (including Gullah-Geechee food ), try a couple of rum bars, and stay in a historic hotel downtown. Then I threw a curveball to see if AI could hit it: I asked it to find activities that explore the city’s obscure historic connection to the island of Barbados (the city was founded by wealthy, white Barbadian plantation owners, and their impact on Carolina culture remains).
All three basically did what they were told. They all recommended the same hotel, and some of the restaurants, nearly all good choices, overlapped too. The Gullah-Geechee and rum recommendations checked out. And while the AI tools provided well-curated lists of things to do that would introduce me to Charleston history, they mostly swung and missed at the Barbados connection.
Overall, the three tools’ performance suggest that this vastly promising, often bewildering technology can already simplify the task of planning a vacation. But it’s also not a complete solution to the age-old problem every traveler faces: figuring out how to engage with an unfamiliar part of the world, and the people who live there, in an enriching, meaningful way. Only human intelligence can accomplish that. So how did they stack up?
Mindtrip is by far the slickest and most sophisticated of the bunch. Just type in the kind of trip you want to take, with as much detail as you can. Out comes a trip plan.
The itinerary includes maps, so you can see how far apart things are. Each item has a live web link; hover your cursor over it and an image and summary pop up. You can view the plan as a printed itinerary or a calendar. Everything is shareable. You can ask additional questions easily and change and remove individual days. When the tool happens to recommend Mindtrip’s partners, a booking link pops up. In my case it recommended visiting Drayton Hall , a plantation built by Barbadians, and it picked the Mills House Charleston Curio Collection by Hilton , a perfectly located historic hotel, and offered a link to pick a room. (The company says partnerships do not influence itineraries, however.)
It hallucinated over Barbados, claiming two activities had Barbados connections when they didn’t. It incorrectly cited a Barbados connection to the City Market and sent me to a whiskey bar for rum.
Vacay asks for a few specifics about your trip (destination, duration, number of people, budget), then provides two open-text fields allowing you to tell it more in plain language.
Itineraries include per-day, per-activity, and total budget figures, and they are clearly broken down by morning, afternoon, and evening activities. Travel plans are easy to download and copy, making Vacay the best for creating printable, portable draft plans you can manually edit as Word or Google documents. It also placed me at the Mills House. It also did the best job with Barbados, recommending a visit to the Charles Towne Landing state historic site, where the Barbadians landed in 1670, and the International African American Museum , which includes displays that explain how Barbados and Charleston are linked to the African diaspora.
The plans from Vacay lack maps and web links. To modify the itinerary, you can query again or consult with the Vacay chatbot, but those additional answers don’t update your original itinerary.
Created by the travel media brand Matador, GuideGeek is a chatbot available via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Send an instant message to GuideGeek to get going, then input your requests as text. Out comes a plan.
As a chatbot, GuideGeek invites continued conversation so you can ask for details, tweaks, and elaborations. It will provide live web links on request, though some are dated or broken. I found this to be the easiest pocket AI travel consultant. It also placed me at the Mills House!
GuideGeek works only on mobile devices. Itineraries are broken into arbitrary chunks based on the message length allowed by each platform, so the whole thing isn’t easy to download or copy. GuideGeek seriously whiffed on the Barbados connection; it recommended four activities that had nothing to do with it, and sent me to a contemporary distillery that doesn’t make rum.
Three tips for planning a trip on AI
Be very specific. All generative AI tools work better when you give them very detailed directions. Broad requests about a trip generate information drawn largely from the first page of Google search results.
Don’t like it? Change it. Once you have your itinerary, you can ask to update, dig deeper, or create another version.
Two (or three) neural networks are better than one. Use multiple tools to check the others’ work. Mix and match, verify all the information, and add your own knowledge and research from real humans you trust.
We Tried The Most Popular Travel Itinerary Apps, And Here Is Our Favorite
T raveling is the best kind of adventure, but let's face it, the planning bit can sometimes feel like navigating a labyrinth of endless checkpoints. With countless booking confirmations, flight schedules, and activity plans, keeping track of everything can be daunting and borderline impossible, especially if it's all on paper. Enter the world of travel tools and apps designed to be the digital equivalent of a personal travel planner. But with so many options out there, which one is "The One"?
In our quest to find the best travel companion, we dove into the digital sea of travel tools. Drumroll, please, for TripIt , TripCase , Pebblar , and Wanderlog . We tested these four apps for their flashy features, real-world practicality, user-friendliness, overall design, and value. From itinerary creation to real-time updates, we explored the capabilities of these apps to determine which tool can transform chaotic planning into a streamlined experience. Note that these apps are not for booking, reviews, or travel content — you've got Expedia , Tripadvisor , and the rest for that. In this article, we are focusing solely on travel organizational tools.
To equalize the comparison, we'll focus on Paris, a basic multi-day journey to the city of love — for some history, French food, and metropolitan adventure. We'll take you through the ins and outs of each app, share some insights, and ultimately reveal our top pick. So, whether you're a globetrotter planning your next epic voyage or someone looking to organize a hassle-free business trip, join us as we uncover the travel tool that stands a cut above the rest.

For our first app, we've chosen TripIt , arguably the longest-running (since 2006) and most popular of the four. It has over 245,000 ratings averaging 4.8 stars on the App Store, with features in Travel+Leisure and Forbes — so we decided to put it to the test. The key feature of TripIt is its ability to automatically create a streamlined master itinerary for every trip using all your travel confirmation emails, from flight bookings to hotel reservations. The app also provides destination-specific information like weather forecasts, local maps, and even medical safety.
While TripIt offers a free version, which is also offline accessible, there is an annual subscription called TripIt Pro for $67.99. This premium version includes additional features such as flight status updates, reward program tracking, and alternative flight suggestions in case of cancellations. The Pro version also has the Inner Circle feature, which allows you to invite others to join your itinerary. Although it's pricier, this elevated version would benefit anyone who is a frequent flier, travels for business, or is taking an elaborate trip with a group.
We found that TripIt worked very well for our Parisian escapade. The map is remarkably useful for seeing the city — the app has a diverse and thorough database of locations, with all the necessary information in the destination's profile. If you need to find a nearby hospital, ATM, or cup of coffee, TripIt has your back. As far as graphics go, the UX is clean, straightforward, and doesn't lag. For the risk-takers and the safe-siders, TripIt has a unique safety feature informing you if a location in your itinerary is above your pre-set personal risk level. It's like having a traveling guardian angel!
Not to be confused with TripIt, TripCase is in a league of its own. It seems more popular with the Android crowd, with 19,200 reviews on Google Play averaging 3.9 stars. TripCase allows travelers to manually or automatically consolidate their plans into a single itinerary using booking emails. The app offers real-time flight alerts, itinerary-sharing options, destination information, travel document storage, offline access, and the ability to record trip notes.
The Trip Feed updates travelers with important information and reminders, such as check-in times, gate changes, and weather updates. Another unique feature is the app's affiliation with AirHelp . This claims management company can help you get compensated with up to $700 in the case of a flight delay, cancellation, or overbooking. TripCase has one in-app feature for purchase, a $5.99 annual subscription for Receipts, which saves and syncs all travel receipts. This might be prudent for business travelers, but otherwise, all the travel management capabilities of the app are completely free.
Paris and TripCase got along quite well. We loved that the app is connected with Uber, so we could hail a ride from Jadin du Luxembourg to La Palette to make it in time for a 6 PM dinner. It's also synced with trip tools like Waze and Google Maps for directions, which is perfect. Overall, TripCase's functions are more modest but include all the basics that a travel app should have, and they work well for the most part. The graphics of the app do appear more old-fashioned than the rest in this round-up. But for an app that is 95% free, TripCase will 100% empower your travels.
Pebblar is also a collaborative itinerary planner; however, it stands out as quite unique. A key feature of Pebblar is its map-based planning interface. You can plot all your travel plans on a map, which helps in understanding distances, travel times, and the geographical context of your itinerary. The app can also recommend places to visit based on the destination, user preferences, and even the Google star rating. There's also a feature for tracking expenses, transportation options (including a game-changing Uber feature ), offline access, opportunities for collaborative planning, document storage, and a travel checklist in-app.
The main difference between Pebblar and the other apps is that it doesn't automatically sync your confirmation emails to build an itinerary. Everything is done manually. However, it does make travel planning a lot more hands-on and invested, as users build their travel plans by adding flights, accommodations, and activities. Moreover, the app is not entirely free. You receive a 30-day free trial from the moment you register, but once that's done, you either pay $10 per itinerary or sign up for a $9.95 monthly subscription for unlimited itineraries.
We really liked the user-friendly and well-designed interface. The friendly UX and the map view helped with seeing Paris at a glance. The Explore option was outstanding — in a big touristy city, it isn't always wise to trust any old restaurant or cafe, and being able to filter in-app with Google ratings to find the right place is very helpful. Pebblar does hit a long checklist of features and seamlessly integrates them all into a single app. However, the manual input of plans, along with the mandatory subscription, may be a dealbreaker for some travelers.
Wanderlog is a modern app designed for all types of trips, with a 4.9 rating on the App Store and a 4.7 on Google Play. Wanderlog allows users to plan their journeys by creating a detailed itinerary, and automatically importing all booking reservations from their inbox into their trip plan. One of the standout features of Wanderlog is its collaborative aspect. You can plan trips with friends or family by sharing your journey and allowing others to add or edit plans.
The app has a most exhaustive list of integrated features: expense tracking and splitting, personalized suggestions, checklists, trip notes, offline access, attachment storage, an AI travel planner , and, oh dear, the list goes on. With that said, many of the premium features, like having offline access and being able to integrate your booking emails, are not included in the free version and come at a cost of $63.99 a year. The app's free basic features may be enough for some, but Wanderlog Pro is a big difference. There is also less emphasis on real-time travel updates in Wanderlog compared to the other apps.
Nonetheless, Wanderlog's design deserves a standing ovation, certainly more than any of the other apps. The attractive layout, intuitive UX, and seamless features were truly 10 out of 10. It was genuinely pleasant and easy to plan out a Parisian travel itinerary. And with an AI assistant, Wanderlog feels like a futuristic itinerary planner. Moreover, no other travel app had advice listings like "The 50 best cheap eats in Paris" — sounds like something we do here at Explore!
Which Popular Travel Tool Is Our Favorite?
And now to choose "The One" — no easy feat. Ultimately, picking the right travel app depends on individual needs. Moreover, each app is built differently. Through this process, we've come to the conclusion that for real-time updates and detailed itinerary management, TripIt and TripCase are top choices. For collaborative and visually-oriented planning, look to Wanderlog and Pebblar.
TripIt excels in creating itineraries from booking emails and offers valuable real-time travel updates. However, its more advanced features, including reward program tracking, are locked behind a Pro version. TripCase also provides real-time alerts for flight changes and has a simple, old-fashioned interface, but it's less focused on collaborative planning. Of the two, TripIt stands out for its more advanced and varied features, better UX, and value.
For those prioritizing group travel and map-based planning, Wanderlog emerges as a strong option. Its core features are available for free. However, for more, you'd have to pay. Pebblar is perfect for those who prefer a visual approach to manual itinerary creation. However, after a 30-day trial, its itinerary features require payment. Of the two, Wanderlog stands out for its stunning design, modern and intuitive features, and utility — both on subscription and without.
So, whether you're going to Paris or Panama, and whether you prioritize real-time flight updates, collaborative features, or a visually oriented planning experience, there's a travel app out there for you. Now that we've tried it, perhaps you can try it too!

Crafting a trip itinerary can be both fun and overwhelming. Which places are an absolute must-visit, and which ones can you skip? How much time should you spend at the art museum, and how close is it to that bookstore you want to check out? And how can you keep all your ideas and bookings neatly organized?
The best trip planner apps can help you answer those questions. I’ve found several that will help you discover the right places to go and organize your day-by-day itinerary in one handy place. Download these apps, and you can pitch your endless spreadsheets and Word docs into the recycle bin.
All of the following trip planner apps are free unless otherwise noted.
TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor ( iOS | Android ) is the granddaddy of trip planner apps. Unlike other apps that feature only major cities, TripAdvisor offers listings of both top attractions and hidden gems in just about every corner of the globe, along with restaurants, hotels, and vacation rentals. You can create customized itineraries by saving the places you’re interested in to the app’s new Trips feature . (Trips can be kept private or shared publicly.)
When you search for a city in the app, you’ll see a feed of other users’ trips, photos, videos, reviews, and articles about that destination, all offering ideas and inspiration. For more trip planning help, you can post your questions in the TripAdvisor forums , where destination experts offer in-depth advice.
Visit a City
Visit a City ( iOS | Android ) helps solve two common trip planning challenges: figuring out how long you need to spend at each place, and maximizing your vacation time by grouping nearby attractions together. When you select a destination, the app offers recommended sightseeing guides based on the number of days you plan to spend. For example, I put in that I was going to Paris, for three days and was given several itinerary options, including Top Attractions, Landmarks for Kids, Parks & Museums, Easy Going, and more. The app automatically puts nearby attractions together and lets you know how far apart they are (for instance, “three minutes by walking”). It also includes the estimated time that you’ll spend at each place.
You can edit the itinerary by changing the day you visit a place, revising the amount of time you spend there, or deleting the attraction altogether. (You’ll almost certainly have to do some editing, as the itineraries don’t include lunch or coffee breaks.) You can also book tours through the app and get general travel information about the destination, such as the best time of year to visit or tips for saving money.
The Best Sites to Book a Last Minute Vacation
CityMaps2Go
CityMaps2Go ( iOS | Android ) offers a handy offline maps that you can customize with personal points of interest. Even better, the app displays your location on the map whether you’re connected to data or Wi-Fi. The app includes thousands of offline maps from just about anywhere on Earth, which means it’s useful for travelers who don’t want to pay international data charges when heading overseas.
You can create different lists for your trip (for example, separate lists for dining, bars, attractions, etc.), and the locations you add to the list will show up on your map. Info cards for each place include a review score, nearby accommodations, some basic information, and the ability to add notes of your own.
The fun part of trip planning is imagining all the cool places you’ll go. What’s not so fun? Figuring out the logistics of getting there. Fortunately, Rome2rio ( iOS | Android ) can help solve that problem. The app searches just about every mode of transportation—plane, train, subway, bus, ferry, taxi, Uber—to recommend the best way to get from point A to point B.
You can enter either two destinations within a given city or two points farther apart, and the app will display your options, including the time it’ll take to travel and the approximate cost. Note that the listings are for planning purposes only, and you can’t actually book your flights or tickets through the app.
TripIt ( iOS | Android ) is a fixture on “best travel apps” lists, and for good reason. It turns an inbox full of scattered booking confirmations and restaurant reservations into a single master itinerary that you can access offline, sync with your phone’s calendar, and share with loved ones. You simply forward each confirmation email to [email protected] and let the app do the rest.
Upgrade to TripIt Pro ($49/year) for other useful features such as real-time flight alerts, rewards program tracking, and the ability to locate alternate flights if your original plans are disrupted.
Culture Trip
The app arm of Culture Trip ( iOS | Android ) aims to bring travelers a little bit out of the mainstream (tagline: “For curious travelers”) by highlighting unique, off-the-beaten-path options in popular destinations. With recommendations for more than 200 destinations around the world, it’s a great way to bring more local perspective to your trip planning.
The Culture Trip app uses the publication’s content as a starting point; say, an article on the Top 9 Dessert Spots in Amsterdam. While reading the article, you can save individual places to lists that you create and view their location on maps. You can also explore their curated “Culture Trips”—pre-made itineraries for small group travel bookable within the app.
5 Smartphone Essentials You Should Never Travel Without
TripScout ( iOS ) combines articles and videos from well-known travel publishers and local experts to form what it calls “a personalized, always up-to-date travel guide” for destinations around the world. Every point of interest mentioned in the content is mapped, so you can build a customized itinerary showing your intended destinations on a map.
TripScout can also personalize recommendations based on your travel dates, budget, interests, and even the number of people in your travel group. And like some of the other apps on this list, TripScout works entirely offline, potentially saving you from paying international data fees. The only downside? Android users are left out; TripScout is iOS only.

Let’s compare the features of these travel planning apps so you can make the right decision for you and your business.
#1) Pricing
Wanderlog offers a comprehensive travel planning experience with its Pro Annual Plan, priced at $59.99 for a full year of access. This plan unlocks premium features like offline access, collaboration tools, and personalized recommendations, making it a valuable investment for frequent travelers and avid planners.
TripIt’s Pro plan comes in at $49 per year for those seeking a more budget-friendly option. While it does not have all the bells and whistles of Wanderlog’s premium offering, it still provides essential features like itinerary management, real-time flight alerts, and seamless integration with your email and calendar.
Regarding pricing, TripIt takes the lead with its slightly lower cost. However, the choice ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you’re a casual traveler who primarily needs basic itinerary management, TripIt’s Pro plan is sufficient. But if you crave a more immersive and feature-rich planning experience, Wanderlog’s Pro Annual Plan could be worth the extra investment.
Verdict: For pricing, TripIt is the more affordable option.
#2) Free Plan
Wanderlog’s free plan lets you try travel planning by creating basic travel itineraries and accessing a curated selection of recommendations. It’s a great starting point if you’re new to the app or only planning occasional trips.
TripIt’s free version, however, goes the extra mile. You get unlimited itinerary creation, real-time flight tracking, and basic collaboration features to share your plans with travel companions. It’s perfect for frequent travelers or those who want a more robust planning tool without breaking the bank.
If you want to get the most out of a free travel planning app, the TripIt account offers more bang for your buck. Its generous features and unlimited itinerary creation make it a valuable asset for any traveler.
Verdict: For free features, TripIt is the clear winner.
#3) Design & Functionality
Wanderlog’s interface is visually appealing and intuitive. It makes it easy to create and visualize your itinerary, add notes, and even collaborate with fellow travelers. The map integration is a standout feature, enabling you to see your plans unfold geographically.
TripIt, on the other hand, prioritizes efficiency and automation. Its strength is automatically importing travel information from your emails, saving you the hassle of manual input. This streamlined approach keeps your itinerary organized with minimal effort.
While both apps have well-designed interfaces, the choice comes down to personal preference. If you value visual planning and collaboration, Wanderlog is the way to go. If efficiency and automation are your top priorities, then TripIt will suit you better.
Verdict: Wanderlog is an excellent fit for those who enjoy a visually engaging planning experience and want to collaborate. If you aim to organize your travel information effortlessly with minimal input, TripIt is the better choice.
#4) Intuitive Itinerary Creation
Wanderlog excels at crafting itineraries visually. You can easily drag and drop activities, view your plans on a map, and even get personalized recommendations. The collaborative features allow you to share and edit plans with others, making group travel a breeze.
TripIt takes a more automated approach. It seamlessly imports travel details from your emails, creating a structured itinerary. While not as visually engaging, it offers a quick and efficient way to organize your travel plans.
For intuitive itinerary creation, Wanderlog takes the lead. Its visually driven interface, personalized recommendations, and collaborative features make it an enjoyable and engaging experience.
Verdict: If you prefer a visual and collaborative approach to itinerary creation, Wanderlog is the ideal choice. Its user-friendly interface and personalized suggestions make planning your next adventure a fun and engaging experience.
#5) Syncing with Google Maps
Wanderlog seamlessly integrates with Google Maps, allowing you to visualize your itinerary directly on the map. You can easily plot your daily activities, get directions between locations, and even see estimated travel times. This integration is incredibly convenient for planning your routes and ensuring a smooth travel experience.
While TripIt offers map integration, it provides a different level of seamlessness. While you can view your itinerary on a map, the functionality is limited compared to Wanderlog. You won’t find the same detail or ease of use when planning routes or visualizing your daily activities.
Wanderlog has a clear advantage in terms of syncing with Google Maps. Its seamless integration and robust features make it a more powerful tool for visualizing and navigating travel plans.
Verdict: If you rely on Google Maps for navigation and want a travel planning app that seamlessly integrates with it, Wanderlog is the way to go. It’s a powerful tool to help you visualize your itinerary, plan routes, and confidently explore your destination.
#6) Hotel and Car Rental Reservations
Wanderlog’s strength lies in its curated recommendations and booking partnerships. You can browse a selection of hotels and car rentals directly within the app, compare prices, and even book your selections seamlessly. The personalized recommendations based on your itinerary and preferences can be a time-saver.
TripIt shines in its ability to centralize all your travel details effortlessly. It automatically imports confirmations from your emails, creating a comprehensive itinerary that includes your hotel and car rental reservations. This hands-off approach ensures all your booking information is in one convenient location, even if you booked through various platforms.
While Wanderlog offers a convenient booking experience, TripIt’s automatic import and centralized itinerary management give it the edge in this category. The ability to effortlessly consolidate all your reservations, regardless of booking platform, is a significant advantage for those who value organization and efficiency.
Verdict: For those who prefer a hands-off approach to organizing travel details, TripIt is the ideal choice. Its automatic import and centralized itinerary management ensure that hotel and car rental reservations are always at your fingertips, providing a seamless and stress-free travel planning experience.
#7) Ability to Manage Multiple Trips
Wanderlog’s intuitive interface allows you to create and organize multiple trips within the app. You can easily switch between different itineraries, view upcoming or past trips, and even duplicate plans for similar destinations. This makes it a breeze to plan and track multiple adventures without feeling overwhelmed.
With its emphasis on automated organization, TripIt also effectively manages multiple trips. Each trip is neatly organized within the app, with easy access to essential details like flights, accommodation, and activities. While not as visually engaging as Wanderlog, TripIt’s simplicity makes it efficient for managing multiple itineraries.
Both Wanderlog and TripIt offer solid solutions for managing multiple trips. Wanderlog’s visually appealing interface and intuitive organization will appeal to some, while TripIt’s streamlined approach and automatic import features resonate with others.
Verdict: Both Wanderlog and TripIt effectively manage multiple trips, making them suitable for frequent travelers. If you prioritize visual organization and enjoy a more hands-on approach, Wanderlog is an excellent choice. However, if you prefer a streamlined and automated experience, TripIt is better for you.
#8) Mobile App Access
Wanderlog’s mobile app offers a visually appealing and intuitive interface that mirrors the desktop version. You can easily access and edit your itinerary, view maps, get recommendations, and even collaborate with others. The offline functionality is a standout feature, ensuring you have your travel plans even when you don’t have internet access.
TripIt’s mobile app shines in its simplicity and user-friendly design. It quickly provides all the essential information you need while on the go, including flight details, hotel reservations, and transportation options. Real-time notifications about flight changes or gate updates keep you informed and ensure a smooth travel experience.
While Wanderlog’s mobile app offers a broader range of features, TripIt’s focus on essential information and real-time updates gives it a slight edge for on-the-go convenience. It’s the perfect tool for quickly checking your itinerary or receiving crucial travel alerts without hassle.
Verdict: TripIt is the winner for a mobile app that delivers essential travel information quickly and efficiently. Its intuitive design and real-time notifications make it a reliable companion for stress-free travel.
#9) Collaborative Trip Planning
Wanderlog facilitates collaboration with real-time editing and commenting features. You can invite your travel companions to contribute to the itinerary, share ideas, and vote on activities. This is a fantastic way to ensure everyone has a voice in planning the adventure.
TripIt, while primarily focused on individual trip management, does offer some collaboration capabilities. You can share your itinerary with others via email or link, allowing them to view your plans. However, it lacks the interactive features of Wanderlog, making it less suitable for real-time collaboration.
When it comes to collaborative trip planning, Wanderlog is the clear winner. Its real-time editing, commenting, and voting features foster a collaborative environment where everyone can contribute and share ideas.
[Add an image of this feature on the winning product; if there’s a tie, just pick an image from one of the products]
Verdict: If you frequently travel with others and value a collaborative planning process, Wanderlog is the ideal choice.
#10) Offline Access to All Travel Details
Wanderlog’s offline mode is a lifesaver for travelers. It allows you to access your itinerary, maps, notes, and even suggested activities without an internet connection. This ensures you have all your essential information at your fingertips, even in remote locations or during flights.
TripIt shines in its ability to make your travel details readily available offline. It automatically stores your itinerary on your device, including confirmations for flights, hotels, and activities. This means you can access your full itinerary even offline, ensuring you’re never caught off guard.
While both apps offer offline access, TripIt’s automatic offline syncing gives it a slight edge. You don’t have to manually download your itinerary before losing connectivity; TripIt takes care of it.
Verdict: For hassle-free offline access to all your travel details, TripIt is the winner. Its automatic syncing ensures your itinerary is at your fingertips, even when exploring remote destinations or navigating through areas with a spotty internet connection.
#11) Real-Time Flight Alerts
Wanderlog provides basic flight information and updates within your itinerary. You’ll see your flight times, airline, and confirmation number; you can even track your flight’s progress on a map. While helpful, it doesn’t offer the same real-time alerts as TripIt.
TripIt excels at real-time flight alerts. It integrates with your email and automatically updates your itinerary with any changes to your flight status. You’ll receive notifications about flight delays, gate changes, cancellations, and even alternative flight options. This can be invaluable for making informed decisions and adjusting your plans on the fly.
When it comes to real-time flight alerts, TripIt is the clear winner. Its comprehensive alerts and automatic updates ensure you’re always prepared for any changes to your flight plans.
Verdict: If staying informed about real-time flight changes is your top priority, TripIt is the better choice. Its robust alerts and automatic updates will give you peace of mind and help you navigate any unexpected disruptions to your travel plans.
#12) Calendar Sync
Wanderlog offers calendar sync, allowing you to export your itinerary directly to your preferred calendar app. This feature keeps your travel plans visible alongside your other appointments and commitments, helping you avoid scheduling conflicts and stay on top of your schedule.
TripIt also provides calendar sync, seamlessly integrating your travel plans into your existing calendar. Flight confirmations, hotel reservations, and even driving directions automatically appear in your calendar, providing a comprehensive schedule overview.
Both Wanderlog and TripIt offer seamless calendar sync, making it easy to keep your travel plans organized alongside your daily schedule. This feature is valuable for staying on top of your commitments and ensuring your trips fit seamlessly into your busy life.
Verdict: Wanderlog and TripIt provide excellent calendar sync capabilities, making it a tie in this category. Whether you prefer Wanderlog’s visual planning or TripIt’s automated organization, you can trust either app to keep your travel plans in sync with your calendar.
#13) Travel Guides and Tips
Wanderlog’s strength lies in its curated collection of travel guides. These guides offer a wealth of information about destinations, attractions, restaurants, and even local experiences. You can find insider tips, suggested itineraries, and even user-generated recommendations, making it a valuable resource for discovering the best of a new place.
While primarily focused on itinerary management, TripIt doesn’t offer comprehensive travel guides. However, it does integrate with partner services like Viator, allowing you to book tours and activities directly within the app. This can be helpful for finding things to do, but it doesn’t replace the in-depth information and recommendations provided by Wanderlog’s travel guides.
Regarding travel guides and tips, Wanderlog is the clear winner. Its curated collection of guides, insider tips, and user-generated recommendations makes it an indispensable tool for discovering your destination’s hidden gems.
Verdict: If you’re looking for an app that organizes your travel plans and provides you with insider knowledge and recommendations, Wanderlog is the perfect choice. Its travel guides are a treasure trove of information to help you make the most of your adventures.
#14) Multi-Destination Planning
Wanderlog makes multi-destination planning a breeze. You can easily create a single itinerary spanning multiple cities, countries, or continents. The app’s intuitive interface allows you to drag and drop activities, view your route on a map, and even calculate travel times between destinations. This visual approach makes planning a complex itinerary much more manageable.
While primarily designed for single-destination trips, TripIt can still accommodate multiple destinations. By forwarding your confirmation emails for each leg of your journey, TripIt automatically creates individual itineraries for each location and collates them into a master itinerary. This gives you a clear trip overview, even with multiple destinations.
While Wanderlog’s visual planning features are impressive, TripIt’s automated approach to consolidating multi-destination itineraries makes it a more efficient and reliable option. Its ability to automatically organize information from various sources and present it in a clear, concise format is valuable for those who value organization and convenience.
Verdict: If you’re planning a trip with multiple destinations, TripIt is the winner. Its automated organization and ability to create a master itinerary from multiple sources make it an indispensable tool for complex travel plans.
Final Thoughts on Wanderlog vs TripIt
After reviewing both Wanderlog and TripIt, it’s clear that each app caters to slightly different travel planning needs.
Wanderlog shines with its intuitive interface and social sharing capabilities, making it ideal for documenting your journeys and sharing them with friends or a community. Its visual planning tools are exceptionally user-friendly, helping you quickly organize complex itineraries.
On the other hand, TripIt stands out for its robust functionality and reliability, which has been honed over years of feedback and updates. If you value a streamlined experience that centralizes all your travel details into one cohesive itinerary, then TripIt is the way to go. It’s especially beneficial for frequent travelers who need a dependable tool to manage multiple trips.
Given its comprehensive features and seamless integration with various travel services, I strongly recommend TripIt!
Its ability to sync with your calendar and provide real-time updates on travel plans makes it a superior choice. TripIt offers peace of mind, ensuring that all your travel information is easily accessible and well-organized in one place.

10 Ways to Use TripIt Now for Travel Later
By Fiona Ashley
May 18, 2020
News & Culture
Over the past few months, we’ve heard from many of our users who not only miss traveling, they miss planning travel.
According to a Cornell University study , the anticipation of a trip can increase your happiness substantially, even more than the anticipation of acquiring something tangible, like a new car. And while we don't know when travel restrictions will be lifted, we do know that we want to feel prepared to get back on the road when the time comes—and that using TripIt helps spark some joy along the way.
What you can do now:
- Offset past flights . TripIt’s Carbon Footprint feature makes it easy to see, track, and offset your carbon footprint. Non-profit organizations like the Gold Standard vet and recommend high-quality carbon offset projects you can donate to. Check out their current projects here —or sign up for Jet-Set Offset, which will automatically offset flights for you. Learn more here .
- Save itineraries to help you plan . Rather than deleting trips you were unable to take, keep them in your TripIt itinerary to help you remember the locations you had planned visiting, the restaurants you’d still like to experience and the activities you want to check off your list.
- Monitor price drops on future planned travel . Many airlines have minimized change and cancellation penalties in the event that travel restrictions change. If you’ve booked future travels, TripIt’s Fare Tracker, available with a TripIt Pro subscription, will alert you if you’re eligible for a refund or credit if your airfare drops after you book.
- Track loyalty programs. Since most travelers juggle more than one loyalty account (each with its own username), TripIt offers an easy way to stay aware of your award programs, displaying balances, history, expiration dates, and status level. For programs that have modified their balance expiration policies , any revised expiration dates are reflected in TripIt, as well.
- Organize in case of an emergency. Make sure you have your emergency contacts and all your important documents, including passport, visa, drivers license, plus details on your travel expediting services like your known traveler number, TSA precheck, CLEAR, or global entry info.
- Be prepared . You’ve got the time now, so if you’re planning an international trip make sure you’re up to speed on everything you might need upon arrival. TripIt Pro’s International Travel Tools provide country-specific information, including vaccinations, embassy info, visa requirements, emergency phone numbers, and more.
- Know the Safety Score of your frequented destinations. Search past trips in TripIt for locations that you frequent to stay on top of Health & Medical in Neighborhood Safety Scores (COVID-19 is included in the scoring).
Getting prepared based on the “knowns” is just one side of the travel coin, however. Equally important is preparing for the unknowns —something we’re currently focusing on at TripIt. We’re asking ourselves what needs business travelers, leisure travelers, and families might have, and how they might be different. What about accessibility? International travelers? How can we innovate solutions or provide travelers with the information they need to make the best decisions for them? Boarding, security, sanitation, documentation—these issues are front and center for our team. In the meantime, TripIt already offers several features to help mitigate the unknowns.
When you travel again:
- Security checks may take longer and require more steps. Aviation marketing consultancy SimpliFlying recently predicted challenges that may arise for both travelers — like needing to arrive four or more hours ahead of a flight to go through the necessary checks — and airlines, “Enhanced cleaning regimes could spell the end of the 30-minute turnaround, upon which many low-cost carriers base much of their business model.” TripIt Pro includes security wait times at select airports to help you plan and prepare for the changes these new policies will have on security lines.
- As more flights become available, there may be frequent gate and timing changes. TripIt Pro keeps you up-to-date with alerts for flight and gate changes.
- Share your travel plans with family or friends so they always know where you are. Just click the share icon on your itinerary to share your travel plans via text or email . No more copying and pasting the details about when you’re arriving or where you’re staying. You can also select individual (or multiple) trip plans within a TripIt itinerary and send them via text, Slack, WhatsApp, or your favorite messaging app.
Travel will return, and when it does, the TripIt team is making sure you have what you need to be prepared to do so. Until then, a little future travel planning might help fill the void in your calendar—and some fun Zoom backgrounds might bring some joy.

6 Best AI Trip Planner Apps for Your Next Travel
Written by Ivana Kotorchevikj AI for Entertainment
Traveling is an enriching and memorable experience, but let's face it, planning it can sometimes be daunting and time-consuming. The myriad of choices to make, from choosing the perfect hotel to crafting an itinerary that covers all must-visit sights, can turn a fun anticipation into a stressful chore.
But what if you could have a personal assistant that knows your preferences, budgets, and also understands the nuances of travel planning? Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? Thanks to the advancements in artificial intelligence, this dream is closer to reality than you might think.
A new generation of AI trip planner apps is changing the way we travel, streamlining the planning process and making it personalized and efficient. Whether you're a seasoned traveler aiming for a more efficient planning process or a travel newbie feeling overwhelmed by the idea of planning a trip from scratch, this article has got you covered.
We will explore the 6 best AI trip planner apps available today, delving into what each one can do to help you choose the right app that can turn your next trip into a seamless and enjoyable journey. So buckle up, and let's embark on this digital voyage together.
Roam Around
There are two Roam Around AI travel apps on the market created by different developers, which may cause confusion. Below, we’ll cover both apps separately.
- RoamAround.io
Roamaround.io is only a free ChatGPT-powered itinerary generator. The AI platform relies on ChatGPT’s model to create a day-by-day itinerary for a chosen location.
The app is pretty simple to use. You can use the app to plan your trips with or without logging in with your Google account. However, if you log in, you can save your itineraries in your profile. Note : I input several travel destinations to create plans with the app, but they didn’t save in my profile. It might be a glitch in the app that the developer will hopefully fix soon.
To create a trip plan, simply enter your desired destination in the ‘Where to?’ field and click on the ‘Let’s roam’ button . If you have a limited number of days, you can also enter a prompt with the days and your destination, for example, “ 3 days in Barcelona .”
Roam Around will generate a detailed itinerary with suggested activities for each day. After creating the travel plan, you can further define any special requests to tailor your trip. The AI platform suggests the following: “Family time ,” “ Make it three days ,” and “ More outdoorsy ,” among others.
However, the AI travel planning tool doesn’t offer any advanced filters to refine your trips. There’s no option to input the travel date or the number of trip days. Instead, Roam Around takes the current date as your starting date, which is inconvenient. That’s why it’s best to use Roam Around as a starting point for your trip and use other AI trip planners to plan further.
- Roam Around - AI Trip Planner
Roam Around - AI Trip Planner is an Android/iOS app and web app running on ChatGPT. In contrast to the other Roam Around AI tool, it is not free.
You get 2 free tokens for creating travel plans if you log into the app with your Google account (1 token equals 1 travel plan). After you run out of the free tokens, you can purchase new tokens from three packages 30, 80, and 150 tokens.
To generate a trip itinerary, you need to enter your destination, the number of days, and optional personalizations, for example, a family-friendly trip. Roam Around will create a day-by-day itinerary with the most significant places to visit, including a Good to Know list with helpful tips on transportation, weather, food, safety, language, and more.
Below the detailed itinerary, Roam Around provides previews for the places of interest included in the itinerary, including helpful links to phone contact, website, tickets, and a Google Maps link of the places. Also, all landmarks and sites are linked in the itinerary to Viator pages, where you can book tours.
Curiosio is a web-based AI trip planner powered by its own AI engine Ingeenee, trained on data from public libraries like Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, DBpedia, Freebase, GeoNames, OpenStreetMap, and OSMNames.
Curiosio is the perfect AI travel planner if you are planning to go on a road trip by car with several stops along the way. You can enter various parameters to customize your trip, such as starting and finishing point, travel-through points, number of travelers, starting and ending dates , and even specify if you are traveling with your own car or rental , what your budget is and whether you want a curious or obscure theme of your journey.
Additionally, you can define whether you are going on a one-way or roundabout trip . The AI trip planner will generate 4 trip plans. The itineraries include all the trip details you’ve specified, a map, and a breakdown of places to visit in your stops and destinations. All points of interest in the itinerary are clickable and lead to external sources for more information.
You can also share the trip plan with your trip buddies via a shareable link, send it via email and social media, or export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is your go-to AI trip planner if you are a hard-core road trip planner.
- Trip Planner by Build AI
Trip Planner is an AI travel planner web app built with the Build AI platform. The AI platform offers a user-friendly interface that works on simple text prompts. You simply enter your desired destination and the number of days you’ll be staying.
Keep in mind Trip Planner works for one destination and a max of 10 days. You can also add specific requests to customize your AI-generated trip plan.
You can simply type in a prompt, for example, “a 5-day trip in Barcelona with kids.” Trip Planner will generate a vacation schedule with day-by-day and hour-by-hour activities. The trip plans are organized in tables for easier reference and include suggestions for things to do, see, and eat in your destination and tips for having the best time on your trip.
However, Trip Planner is not free. There are limited free trials that can be used for the day. All later users need to either wait for the free trials to reset or pay to get trip credits - $2 for 5 trips and $5 for 20 trips.

If you prefer to have your AI trip planner in your pocket, iPlan.ai is the perfect app you can get on an Android or iPhone. The app interface is neat and beautiful, and the best part is that it’s free to use and doesn’t include in-app ads.
Compared to other web-based AI travel planners, iPlan.ai works on selecting your destination and choosing pre-defined options for your trip preferences. After several taps and swipes, you have a complete travel plan broken down into your defined days.
When creating your trip, iPlan.ai asks for your preferences, such as the number of days, parts of the day you want to spend sightseeing, start and end date, who you are traveling with, your trip interest (historical, art & culture, nature, adventure, nightlife, etc.) and your budget.
All the sites are pinned on a map so you can see the distance between them, and a Google Maps link is linked to them so you can easily navigate them. Additionally, you get the estimated time to get from one place to another and the available modes of transport.
iPlan.ai also allows you to edit your plan. Tap on the three dots in the top-right corner and select ‘Edit plan.’ You can also share your itinerary plan with your travel buddies.
The only downside is that the AI trip planner app only offers plans for the most popular cities in the world. However, if you are traveling to one of them, use iPlan.ai to create your travel plan for a smoother vacation.

Pawmenow is a free AI tool that generates travel itineraries for dog owners wishing to take their furry best friend on the trip.
The web app is designed to create trip plans with dog-friendly destinations, hotels, activities, restaurants, and transportation means. Pawmenow allows you to select your dog’s breed and age, the level of activity you wish to have, your destination, and the number of days you’ll be staying.
The AI tool will generate your travel plan in the text box on the right, tailored to your and your dog’s preferences. However, compared to the other AI trip planners, Pawmenow’s interface is simplified, creating your plan in a text format. It doesn’t include any helpful links or maps to help you through your trip.
Nevertheless, Pawmenow can be a great tool in the initial planning stage of your journey to help you find dog-friendly places.

ChatGPT can also help you to create your itinerary. Input their planned activities and desired places to visit, and the chatbot can suggest the optimal route to take, making sure that the timing and travel arrangements are efficient. The chatbot can also recommend nearby attractions and restaurants based on the user's interests and preferences.
Further, you can also ask ChatGPT to estimate the total cost of your trip based on your provided information or just the accommodation and additional expenses without the hotel and flights.
The chatbot can search for flights based on your preferred dates, destinations, and budget. It can also suggest alternative routes and airlines based on the best deals available.
ChatGPT can help you find accommodation. The chatbot can search for and recommend suitable hotels, hostels, or Airbnb rentals based on the user's budget and preferred amenities.
